My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding .......2007-10-19
This is a good book fun to read. If you like the supernatural and a good love story you will like this book.
vampires, werewolves, and pirates oh my!.......2007-09-29
some of the stories were fantastic, some were just good, but hey, isn't that the whole point of getting a collection of short stories? that way you can check out what all the authors are like without committing to a ton of books. i think the book is pretty good.
Anthologies can be tricky things..........2007-08-24
You're never 100% certain of what you're going to get. They can be great for finding new authors and/or filling in the waiting period til the next book from your favourite author. Or they can make you feel like you've wasted your time.
Although word of mouth said that My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding was an uninspiring collection as a big fan of Jim Butcher, Charlaine Harris and Sherrilyn Kenyon I wanted to find out for myself.
Where it works - the stories that are set in an ongoing series. Jim Butcher's Something Borrowed is a solid entry into the Harry Dresden series. Although I'm not familiar with Lori Handeland's Night Creatures universe her story (Charmed by the Moon) still managed to draw me in, keep me interested and made me want to check out her backlist.
Sherrilyn Kenyon's story whilst not reaching the emotional intensity of Phantom Lover from the Midnight Pleasures anthology is a vast improvement on Until Death Do We Part (Velkan and Retta's story from the Love at First Bite antho.)Though I wish she would cut down on the point of view head hopping.
One other story that stood out for me was Esther Friesner's The Wedding of Wylda Serene. Whilst slow to get into it had some very witty lines that had me laughing out loud.
Having read the stories I am disappointed. Overall the anthology is okay, but there is not enough here that stands out. Maybe it's a case of trying to cram too many authors in to one book.
Anthologies I would recommend - for Sherrilyn Kenyon - Midnight Pleasures, Stroke of Midnight. For Charlaine Harris - Bite (as part of the ongoing Sookie series), Night's Edge (standalone story).
One of the best anthologies I've read.......2007-06-08
Usually anthologies are like panning for gold. You've got to sift through a lot of dirt to get the gold nuggets. This anthology, however, was the motherlode. All the stories were entertaining. Out of the nine, the last two were the weakest, but still a good short read.
I was pleasantly surprised by Charlaine Harris's contribution. I expected a Sookie story, but instead received a good vampire/werewolf story with no Sookie in sight. It is alwasy nice to see another part of the world which an author has created.
Jim Butcher was in true form with his entry. Gee I just love Harry Dresden, no matter what he is doing.
All in all I recommend this book for a short quick read. I already have a waiting list of people who want to borrow it from me.
teaser!.......2007-05-31
what a teaser! Just when u are getting into one of the story, its over! but i guess that is what u can expect from and anthology.
Book Description
Courageous Souls explores the premise that we are all eternal souls who plan our lives, including our greatest challenges, prior to birth for purposes of spiritual growth. The book contains ten true stories of people who planned physical illness, having handicapped children, deafness, blindness, drug addiction, alcoholism, losing a loved one, and severe accidents. Because very different life challenges are often planned for similar reasons, readers who have not faced these specific challenges will nevertheless see themselves - and their motivations as a soul - in these stories. As readers come to realize that they themselves planned their lives, suffering that once seemed purposeless becomes imbued with deep meaning. Wisdom may be acquired in a more conscious manner; feelings of anger, guilt, blame, and victimization are replaced by acceptance, forgiveness, peace, and gratitude.
Customer Reviews:
courageous souls-Do we plan our life challanges before birth?.......2007-10-15
This book is FANTASTIC!
Everyone has a story and has things going on in their life. This book makes everything that happens to you make sense. It allows you to understand why you have ended up where you are in life. Why you have chosen certain paths. And allows you to understand and be at peace with other peoples choices and the way they live their life.
I just loved it.Everyone should have a copy.It is well written, easy to understand and informative. But above all..it just makes sense. And things seem alot more clear to me than they did before I read the book.I loved it.For anyone who needs alittle hope or clarity in their lives..read this book.
Slow read.......2007-10-12
This book has some interesting ideas but it is a slow read. Not too sure if I would recommend.
Karma is more than payback.......2007-10-11
This book really changed my perspective on my current life situation. I was quite negative about the situation I'm dealing with, feeling it was just the result of past lives in which I had incurred very bad karma and I would just have to live through it. But, after reading this book, I believe I am living this life because of contracts I made in the pre-birth planning. That changes everything for me - if I agreed to the challenges I'm working with because I wanted to help one I love, there can be no resentment, just gratitude for being able to help, and love for the one I'm struggling with. Thank you, Robert Schwartz, what a gift!
So that's why . . ........2007-10-08
If you ever want to get into the backside of your pre-birth planning of your life challenges, read Courageous Souls by Robert Schwartz. Want to know why you attract illness, accidents, birth defects? Want to know why you chose a life of alcoholism or drug addiction, or are around someone who has? Read this book. The stories, while may start out slow at first, are powerful and insightful. Just stick with them. Robert uses mediums who are able to access multiple guides at one time, and your primary guide and listen in on conversations between you and your soul group.
not credible.......2007-09-30
I got to p. 300 and started reading another book. I found this book painstakingly slow to read, the information provided by the mediums: farfetched, and the conclusions drawn by the author, hard to swallow. Often, when mediums are tired, their accuracy rate diminishes. I never heard of any of the mediums used in this book. Robert Schwartz makes everything so complicated when the subject matter is really quite easy to understand. The book just doesn't flow easily and it's not a page turner in my opinion. I'm a believer, but this book really is a waste of time and money. Read Journey of the Soul by Michael Newton, PhD. Instead of using mediums, he enters the superconsciousness of his clients and elicits information from them directly about their experiences on The Other Side.

A very good study.......2000-04-15
I have all of the books in the Life Lessons series, and I also have the Inspirational Study Bible (NKJV). This study, as well as the rest in the series, is very well put together. What I especially love about this is that if you don't have your Bible with you, that's ok. The scripture portion is printed right there in the book. There are 2 columns of scripture for each portion of the study. One column is the NKJV (New King James Version) and the other is NCV (New Century Version). So, you have your choice to read between the 2 of those, or you can read both to see if one version emphasizes things differently. Its a very good idea. There is a question before you begin the lesson to make you ponder something that is related to the lesson which will be presented. Then, you read the portion, then answer questions. The back of the book has answers, or suggested answers, to some of the questions asked. This can be used for personal study, or can be used for group study.
I highly recommend this book, and encourage you to get the others in the series as well.

Great Condition, Fast Service.......2007-04-02
I am so glad they re-released this book--my mother was thrilled to receieve it. Seller sent the book in great condition and it arrived very quickly.
enjoyable cat story.......2007-03-08
I had never heard of these stories about a cat named Jenny Linski. My children (and myself as a child) though have another story by the same author that they enjoy and so I decided to give this chapter book a try. What a hit! Both my children ( 5 and 8) greatly enjoyed the story and were happy to discover it is one of a series.
A delightful read!.......2007-01-21
My son loves cats and he really enjoyed Jenny. He was disappointed when he finished the book!
great stories for young children.......2006-05-15
Great stories for young chldren told from the perspective of an orphan black cat, Jenny Linsky. Like young children, who are inexperienced and often intimidated by challenges, Jenny tries to do her best for herself, her owner, and her new cat friends. Delightful, gentle stories I highly recommend.
We all cheered for Jenny.......2006-03-04
My seven year-old daughter received this book as a gift. I read it to her and my five year-old son. We just couldn't get enough of Jenny. The stories are heart-warming and old-fashioned yet children today can relate to Jenny's fears and triumphs. From her anxiety about not being worthy of the Cat Club, through her triumph at her first party, to her generosity as she adopts two brothers, we couldn't help but cheer for Jenny!
I am a 1st and 2nd grade reading teacher. So, after reading the book to my children, I took it straight to school for my first graders. The students enjoyed it and I used it as a teaching tool. This book is a classic that should be on your bookshelf!

It draws on the biblical example of Esther, as well as modern-day role models, to deliver nugget-sized lessons on character traits such as courage, chastity, grace, and dignity. For Such a Time as This will transform young readers into mature women of God.

Conversation Starter.......2007-09-05
My teenage girl's youth group at church are reading this book and studying the Book of Esther. As their teacher, this book has been a wonderful learning tool and really opened the girls up to share their personal stories of what it's like to be a teenage girl in America today. They really enjoy Lisa's writing and have already asked to do another of her books in class. Thanks, Lisa for your book.
Great Book.......2002-11-06
This book is written for the middle school ag.. hence the reason that the slang is so far off... (as noted in the previous reveiw) It is a great book about becoming a modern day Esther.
Esther 101.......2002-04-30
Esther's story is my favorite story in the Bible. She was a very strong woman who was fearless (she was not afriad to be herself). Lisa Ryan has done a great job applying this fabulous story to life as a young woman today. I found that the writing was somewhat silly (Mrs. Ryan sometimes used slang never spoken by anyone outside of middle school), but the message was awesome. Every girl should read this book!
Awesome book: two thumbs up!.......2002-04-05
This was a great book!!! Even thought I am still reading it, It's already making me think about who I am and what I should be working on I love this book! It tottally makes Gods word fun!
FANTASTIC.......2001-12-13
This book covers a wide variety of topics, makes them relevant and understandable, and forces the reader to apply them to daily life. Great to use as a chapter-a-day devotional and encompasses everything a young girl should know!

A Celebration of the Power of Teaching
There is a moment for most teachers when the lure of working with kids surpasses all logic: You know, you just know, that you are meant to teach. But in the day-to-day crush of details and bus duty, politics and paperwork, or kids without their homework for the eighth day in a row, life can erode passion and distract you from your sense of purpose. This collection of stories from teachers everywhere will remind you of those magic moments when a light goes on in the eyes of a child, when resistance breaks, when hearts connect—moments that make the challenges of teaching worth every second and remind you of why you are here in the first place.

Teachers Say The Darnedest Things.......2000-01-13
Thank you for the delightful book. I am not a teacher, but I know many and know what a challenge teaching can be in this day and age. I loved the inspirational stories, but was entranced with "Labor of Love." It was a true analogy of what so many of my friends are experiencing. I hope you have the inspiration and time to write further on this subject.

Book Description
The major works of Henry Adams, one of the most powerful writers of the late nineteenth century, collected in one volume for the first time. Contains "The Education of Henry Adams" and "Mont Saint Michel and Chartres," his remarkable works of nonfiction combining philosophical and historical speculation with autobiographical musings on his famous heritage. Also includes his two novels of American politics and religion, "Democracy" and "Esther."
Customer Reviews:
Henry Adams, Democracy, Esther, Mont Saint Michel and Chartres, The Education of Henry Adams.......2007-02-13
Henry Adams should be required reading for all US students. This version of his writings - Library of America series includes all his best writings in a small book. Amazon delivered as agreed.
Greatest hits.......2003-01-21
The Library of America is one of the best organizations. Here at last are both novels, his interesting autobiography, and Mont St Michel all under one roof.
"Democracy" is one of the best political novels of all time and speaking as a denizen of the nation's capital, very little has changed. Esther is attempt deal with the "woman question." Clearly the inspiration of both books is Mrs. Henry Adams. Known as "Voltaire in petticoats" (Henry James), she later tragically took her own life following a period of depression. The death of his wife led to Henry Adams' retirement from public life. This subject is covered in Ernest Samuels' wonderful biography (which I also recommend).
I suggest a look at his biography since the subject of Marion Clover Adams is avoided entirely in "The Education of Henry Adams." Henry Adams may not discuss his wife, but he does touch on nearly everything else of importance in his autobiography. "Growing up Adams," life in Europe with Garibaldi's forces, life at the British legation in London during the Civil War are all addressed. The best and probably the most key chapter in the book is the one entitled "The Virgin and Dynamo." Adams uses the 1876 cenntenial fair as a departure to meditate of the impact of the industrial revolution. Adams believed with the growth of technology that man would somehow outgrow the simple humanity of the Middle Ages (it would have been interesting if Adams had lived long enough to meet someone like Carl Jung to see what he would have to say on this subject!). One of the foremost historians (the Library of America has also issued the history of Jefferson and Madison's Administrations, which is a classic), Adams became interested in the Middle Ages and his survey of the two great cathedrals of France Chartes and Mont St. Michel is the final book in the volume. I cannot recommend this book too highly, it is a must for all fans of Henry Adams and those who would like to experience him for the first time.
one of the most brilliant minds in American literature.......2000-06-13
While Adams novels (Democracy and Esther) may be lightweight, the other two works included in this volume are two of the best non-fiction American books ever. Adams has the kind of intellect that seems capable of encompassing everything. Like Joseph Campbell or Harold Bloom, Adams often leaves the reader in awe of how much he knows and how he is able to make the connections that so clearly illuminate everything he touches upon. This is one of my favorite volumes in the Library of America series, and I know that anyone who appreciates intelligence, wit, and charm in a writer will enjoy reading it.
Book Description
A true story of freedom and miraculous healing as a Muslim girl finds faith in Christ
When Gulshan Esther, a devout Muslim girl, was six months old, typhoid left her a cripple. Her loving father took her from Pakistan to England to find a cure, but the only hope the British specialist could offer was prayer. Gulshan and her father made pilgrimage to Mecca and begged Allah for healing, but it was not until her father’s untimely death that Gulshan began to receive an answer. In her grief she wanted to die, but as she called out to God, for the first time in her life she sensed she was being heard. She heard a low, gentle voice say, “I won’t let you die. I will keep you aliveÖI am Jesus, son of Mary.”
As Gulshan began reading the Quran, her interest in Jesus grew, until one amazing night he appeared to her in her bedroom in a blaze of light. He restored her crippled arm and leg and taught her The Lord’s Prayer. He told her to go to his people—now her people—and tell them what he had done. Since that time, and to this day, she has been a joyous, obedient disciple of Christ. The Torn Veil is an amazing story of faith and determination.
This moving autobiography was first published in 1984 and has sold over 200,000 copies worldwide.
Customer Reviews:
In Awe.......2007-04-24
I was swept away of the Gulshan Esther's courage. A wonderful person recommended this book - I'm so glad he did because it was hard to put down. I was in awe of Jesus' faithfulness and promise to heal those who call on Him and believe in His name. Truly a powerful story which God desired for His people to read. Gulshan answered that call, not backing down for a moment; she's a beautifully healed soldier.
Beautiful........2004-12-19
This is a beautiful story of a Muslim girl who is healed by Jesus, and comes to know Him as her Lord and Saviour.
It is wonderful to read of the power and compassion of Jesus,of how He spoke to her,of how He transformed her body, her heart, and her life.
A beautiful testimony book not just for Muslims, but for anyone.
God really cares for the hurting!.......2004-09-28
The story shows how when we are really desperate for God, He reveals Himself in a very powerful and yet in a practical loving way by healing this sick lady.
