This was a good book. But I isn't as good as most of her other books I've read.

I know this the last book of the Tucker Mills Trilogy. I have read the whole series, and enjoyed it a great deal.
I would recommend this trilogy to all.

Reviewed by Kelli Glesige for Reader Views (1/07)

Dannan MacKay is the young physician who has come to town to take over his uncle's former practice. Doc MacKay was thought of highly by all the townsfolk before his retirement, and Dannan is warmly welcomed by the town, the church family, and by all those he treats. Dannan is comfortable and confident of his new life until he is accidentally smacked in the face with a shovel by the lovely Scottie Peterson. Dannan is quite taken by Scottie and believes he may be in love until he learns Scottie is married and the wife of the bedridden Eli Peterson.

Dannan struggles with his feelings for the happily married Scottie and tries to quiet his heart. To keep his mind focused, Dannan puts all his efforts into treating his beloved patients, until a tragedy occurs and Dannan soon finds himself trying to be a surrogate father to a lovable but frightened three-year old named Corina, daughter of his cousin Grant. How can a single physician meet all the needs of an orphaned child? Dannan seeks the help and support of the town he now calls home. Corina instantly wins the hearts of all who meet her, except for Scottie Peterson who desperately tries to keep her distance and remain at arms' length. To find solace and guidance, Dannan turns to seeking God's will and to conversing with Eli, even when he lies on his deathbed.

"Leave a Candle Burning" is about trusting God and accepting His will for our lives. It is about knowing God is in control and has a perfect plan for each of us. It reveals the joy that comes to those who obey and believe. "Leave a Candle Burning" will pull at your heart.

I have enjoyed almost everything I have ever read by Lori Wick, and I was not disappointed with "Leave a Candle Burning." It is of the similar high quality I have come to expect from this proven author. And even though I have not read the other books in this particular trilogy, I had no problem following the story. If you too enjoy Christian Romance, I recommend this current selection without reservation. If you are a fan of Lori Wick, this is a must read. This book is appropriate for all ages and genders.

2 out of 5 stars Very annoying and predictable.......2007-01-06

This was the worst Lori Wick book I've read. I was very disappointed with the writing style and the predictability of the plot. It was extremely annoying that EVERY time Dannon walks in on Scottie playing or reading with the little girl, he says "Now this looks fun." This phrase becomes very awkward and stilted from overuse. There are many other ways he could've broken into their conversation without saying the same thing over and over again. I would recommend Ms. Wick's older novels, The Kensington Chronicles and The Princess over this newer series.

3 out of 5 stars A nice story.......2006-09-25

I liked the plot line of this book more than I did the others in this trilogy; it appealed to me more. I really really liked Dannon and how, when he is faced with having feelings for a woman who is unavailable, he confesses them to God and asks for help in overcoming them. His cousin's little girl, who he adopts when she becomes orpahned, is really sweet.
What I didn't like was how the author kept jumping around to other characters in the town. It was a bit confusing to me and I felt that they detracted from the main story a bit. While mentioning what went on in Scottie's hosehold was understandable, I really did not need to or want to know about what was going on in everyone else's households and how they all felt over someone's broken arm.
I also felt that the ending was way too rushed and I did not care for the epiolouge at all. I didn't feel that it was really necessary to the story; it just seemed to add characters who either had nothing to do with the story or very little to do with it.

Great Books for Girls: More Than 600 Books to Inspire Today's Girls and Tomorrow's Women

This story is about a real girl who rises to meet a challenge that would frighten any adult. My kindergartner now holds this book near/dear as she sees it as a model of courage/bravery to aspire to. Even more exciting is that this story is based upon a real event in a real girl's life.

4 out of 5 stars Great Learning Tool.......2007-03-25

This book gives you an idea of what it was like to operate a lighthouse in the mid 1800's. Sure doesn't sound fun. In that sense the book is very educational, and it give hero status to a deserving individual that most people have never heard of. The only real flaw it has is in the format of its printing. I can't tell where one paragraph starts and another ends, so if I were trying to narrate this thing I would have a hard time knowing where to stop and start as far as the vocal intonation goes. I also think the introduction gives away the whole story on the first page, so it should really be put at the end of the book.

Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie is a well-written piece of historical fiction based on Abbie Burgess' own accounts and other historical sources. This information is provided in the note by the authors at the beginning of the book. All incidences appear to be very representative of the life of the time depicted. Abbie's character is developed well. The reader is able to see that Abbie is a strong young girl who does not want to let her family, especially her father, down. She faces the conflict of person vs. self and also person vs. nature is evident in the book. The theme evident in the book is bravery and strength. Abbie had to be brave to keep the lights lit. She needed the strength to overcome her fears and to live up to her father's expectations. The illustrations were beautiful watercolors that set the mood of the story.

Book Description

Nina Bangs, Cheryl Holt, Kimberly Raye, and Patricia Ryan are all well-known for writing the sexiest, most creative romances around. And in Burning Up, they showcase their talents and ratchet up the heat. From 1867 New York City to Regency England; from modern-day Texas to sometime in the future, these four stories will take readers on an erotic tour through time-and true love.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Intense! Highly recommended.......2003-08-20

Authors Nina Bangs, Cheryl Holt, Kimberly Raye, AND Patricia Ryan combine their talented pens for a sizzling collection of novellas. These powerful tales of seduction and pleasure will keep the blood simmering with their intimate detail and erotic possibility. As sexual intensity increases, so also do the demands of the heart. In this volume spanning time and distance, these authors will leave the reader BURNING UP.

"The Flame" by Nina Bangs: Serenity So-Fine time travels from the year 2700 to 2003 seeking an erotic work of art called the Flame. As curator for the Galactic Museum of Erotic Art, Serenity has added many erotic works to the collection, but none has called to her so much as this one. In a time when sexual attraction has been reduced to negotiation and necessity, the Flame speaks to her a way almost primal. When she arrives, Serenity learns that sculptor Justin Hill exudes the very primal heat her world has lost. Unfortunately, she arrives a bit early and the Flame has not yet been created; indeed, Serenity will become the focus of inspiration for the sculpture.

"The Wedding Night" by Cheryl Holt: In 1815, Ellen Foster agrees to a platonic marriage with Lord Stephen Banbury, exchanging her wealth for his title. Little does he suspect that she very carefully chooses him to be her husband, or that her virginal exterior conceals a passion driven woman determined to lure her new husband into their wedding bed. Certainly Stephen's reputation for lewd behavior and a fabulous ass promise a bad-girl want-to-be a wild night if he will only abandon his determination to keep his distance.

"Burn, Inc" by Kimberly Raye: Determined to prove her abilities to her family, Gerry Baxter is producer for an erotic movie company called Women on Top. Production is complete on the first nine films of a ten part series for HBO, but their contract hinges on completing the entire series. Unfortunately, the woman who usually serves as the driving creative force for the company has defected to marriage and a honeymoon, leaving Gerry to complete the project. Ragweed and poor inspiration threaten disaster so Gerry calls Logan, believing he is Dr. Love and can inspire a few ideas for the final shoot. Mistaken identity and sensual promise lead to an unexpected encounter filled with eroticism.

"Possessing Julia" by Patricia Ryan: Widow Julia Hughes needs to loose her virginity within the next two weeks, or her secret will be discovered. Everyone assumes that her son was fathered by her first husband. Now she plans to marry a man just to provide him with an heir. Concerned for her son's well-being, Julia finds a unique solution. Her aunt makes a deal with Clay to show Julia the ways of love making, including how to enjoy and how to please a man. But after such a marvelous intense interlude, both Julia and Clay will face great difficulty to return to their previous lives and plans.

4 out of 5 stars A Hot Summer Read!.......2003-08-06

I found this book to be a great hot summer read and was thrilled with the new authors that I read. I am a huge fan of Cheryl Holt and Kimberly Raye so Nina Bangs and Patricia Ryan were wonderful surprises for me.

I felt that the love scenes in all four books were scorchers but not used as filler but were important parts of the stories, and yes they were erotic but not as erotic as other titles in other romance lines. Still these four short novelles were fast reads and well worth picking up.

3 out of 5 stars Just a little smokey.......2003-07-09

I thought Burning Up was pretty tame as far as erotic romances go.For those of you that have found the Kensington books a little too explicit, Burning Up will probably be more to your liking.

I happen to enjoy the Kensington books and Burning Up didn't do much for me except for the excellent story by Patricia Ryan.
I've read and re-read that one three times already. It's absolutely what I would have liked to have read in the other stories- explicit love scenes, angsty emotional characterizations, and the ultimate "awe, that's soooo sweet" moment at the end.

I found Nina Bang's story didn't really have enough flow to keep me engaged or interested though the premise is unique, and I always give Nina Bang points for originality and humor though her writing style does not appeal to me. The other two stories were rather uninspiring.

4 out of 5 stars hot sexcapade novellas.......2003-07-07

"The Flame" by Nina Bangs. In 2700, Serenity, curator of the Galactic Museum of Erotic Art, believes one item would complete the collection, but needs to go to 2005 to buy The Flame from the sculptor Justin. He has not found the model to bring to life his mind's picture until the so-fine appearance of Serenity.

"The Wedding Night" by Cheryl Holt. In 1815 London, impoverish Lord Stephen weds wealthy American Ellen, who must persuade her spouse that she married him for the way he enflames her blood and not his title.

"Burn, Inc." by Kimberly Raye. When her partner eloped just before the tenth video is filmed, women's fantasy filmmaker Gerry finds her movie failing to heat the crew. Gerry asks Dr. Love to help her. Logan arrives to see the place where the porn moviemaker, who eloped with his brother, works. Gerry thinks this is Love and finds the inspiration to complete the series.

"Possessing Julia" by Patricia Ryan. In 1867 NYC, though she is a widow with a son, Julia remains a virgin worrying how her fiancé will react to that bit of news. She heeds the advice of Aunt Eunice to find a man to teach her how to make love. When her deceased spouse's cousin Clay arrives for the first time in six years, Julie sees it as a sign, especially when he agrees to tutor her.

Though the four tales cross different sub-genres, each one will arouse the reader (timed for when my spouse was off) with fun story lines and great lead couples. Fans of erotic romantic anthologies will appreciate these sexcapade novellas.

Burning Up!
Over the years I have read many steamy romances that have made my pulse race and my body glisten (sweat just doesn't sound as poetic). I've also had the opportunity to read women's erotica with the mistaken assumption that it would leave you as breathless as a well-written romance novel. Erotica, in general, gives readers the "shock and awe" of a sexual, often carnal exploit but show no true emotion between characters. Romantic erotica, on the other hand, gives romance readers the perfect combination of both, offering unbelievable sensuality along with a deep love and respect between the characters.

In this new and powerfully titillating Novella collection, award winning authors Nina Bangs, Cheryl Holt, Kimberly Raye and my favorite, Patricia Ryan, treat readers to an erotic escape like no other. The stories are fresh, well written and exquisitely sensual filled with a deep abiding romance that will leave your senses reeling but thoroughly satisfied. Read it if you dare and discover a side of romance that will blow your mind!

This book has nothing to do with motivating you. All it talks about is disciplining your children, letting go of your ego, being selfless, balance your life etc. etc. This has nothing to do with motivation. I am completely disappointed in this book and will be sending it back for a refund.

5 out of 5 stars Doing More with the Same.......2006-06-07

This book came highly recommended to me by my boss, whose opinion I hold in high esteem. The book was actually an easier read than I had thought, moving swifty from chapter to chapter, with good points throughout. Sometimes you read books where good insight and opinion is few and far between. This book helped me think about business concepts through a lense I never thought possible. It has changed my perspective to help me realize that I can do it and its not that hard. Succeeding though business and life is simple by balancing the six plates and following Dave's suggestions. I now believe I can achieve more with the same.

From the opening pages of this book, I was hooked. Dave Durand shares his deep and broad understanding of what prevents us from having what we want in our lives, and provides you with simple and proven strategies for sustaining motivation while creating the life you've always wanted. So much more than the typical business or self-help book you may have read in the past, Durand's focus is on The Pursuit of Life's Perfect Balance. He teaches you how to achieve success in the areas of the six balnace points of your life: Family, Financial Responsibility, Health, Social contribution, Education and vocation, and Faith. Durand's blueprint for balanced success lays out your plan for a more fulfilled, balanced, and rewarding life. Wonderfully detailed story. Love the continued progression of the main and supporting characters.

5 out of 5 stars Smitty makes Buffalo magical. .......2007-03-07

It is wonderful to read a book in which place is as much a character as the persons whose lives unfold in the story. The City of Buffalo becomes a magical place as Smitty draws new, vivid characters into the stories of Rosalind and Taryn and their family of trannies, queers, witches, drag kings, lovers and friends. The writing sweeps you in at once, and the plot will hold you through all the transformations which occur in the book.

It's a book which will charm you; plan to keep it for re-reading.

5 out of 5 stars Her Best Book Yet.......2007-02-03

Susan Smith's Of Drag Kings and the Wheel of Fate was a powerful story, right on the mark in so many ways. Burning Dreams, its sequel, is even better, and Smith's growth as a storyteller is evident right away.

All of the characters from the first book are back. Taryn's and Rosalind's love story continues with Ellie, Joe and Rhea in strong supporting roles. Paul, Ros' ex, is in the picture now, front and center. He travels to Buffalo because he wants Ros back, and he ends up living with Joe and Rhea while he pursues Ros. This generates friction between Taryn and Ros. And this is where Smith's abilities as a writer shine. She fleshes out the characters well, especially Taryn's. With the threat of Paul, Taryn becomes unlikable and bratty. We, the reader, want her to just grow up because she is doing everything to push Ros away. It is hard to find any redeeming qualities in Taryn, and this is the heart of Burning Dreams. Smith defines the depth of love so succinctly and how it doesn't have to make sense to any of us who are not in the relationship. Only Ros can judge Taryn's behavior as it relates to her.

Smith's style is unique. It envelops the reader with memorable and inspiring passages that are the meat of the story. In my opinion, she is one of the best writers of prose in lesbian fiction today. There is so much emotion mixed with wisdom and clarity in Burning Dreams. It is a story about discovering who we are even in the face of adversity, and it is about creating families to support us so we are not invisible. It is intense yet subtle too, like a velvet hammer. The author again challenges our preconceived notions of love, gender, and what is acceptable. Simply put, she makes us think.

This unusual telling of a modern romance will last a long time. It is hard to predict a classic in the making, but I believe Smith has penned one in Burning Dreams.

5 out of 5 stars Starting Over From Scratch.......2007-01-18

Do you ever wonder what would happen if you could start your life over again? That's exactly what happens to Taryn, Rosalind, and Rhea in this fantastic sequel to "Of Drag Kings and a Wheel of Fate." At the end of that book, these three women found themselves discovering new territory in the fabric of time and space because their souls avoided making fatal mistakes this time around. Now that they have overcome their disastrous fates, these old souls get to enjoy new experiences together. However, these new experiences come with their own trials and tribulations.

For starters, Rosalind's ex-husband Paul enters the picture. He is terribly distraught and lost without her, but she has no intention of re-entering his life. In fact, she is completely committed to the much younger Taryn. Rosalind has to appease Paul and try to be his friend while she also works to convince Taryn of the depth of her love. Just this tangled web would be enough for a great book, but Smitty goes all out by adding many levels to Paul's experiences with Rhea. She also has fun with the characters of Rhea and Joe, and Misha and Ellie.

In my review of "Kings," I noted the characters didn't have much depth. Smitty rectified this and rounded out the characters' pasts and presents. I absolutely loved "Kings," but -- in this reader's humble opinion - the sequel is infinitely better than the first book. Very highly recommended. You'll have to read both books to enjoy the whole experience.

      5 out of 5 stars Nice Handbook.......2007-07-11

Even if you have knowledge or a beginner of the art of candle magic this book will give you the necessary information. It goes through the types of candles, colors, figural, moon phases, planetary hours and some other vital information. My only drawback of this book is that although it provides all the information to burning your candles, it does not explain how to read divinational signs. The skill of preparing and lighting the candles are explained in detail. One important part is the end result. It's important to know if the work was successful or failed. The way a candle burns can give you an indication if things are going to happen slowly or quickly, good or bad. As well as how the flames burn, if the glass encased candle is clear or black. I am now searching for a book that can give me this other piece of information in greater detail. Overall, this is one of the best books to own in your pursuit to mastering candle magic.

      4 out of 5 stars Nice.......2005-05-23

This booklet is a good introduction to working various candles and lights. I would suggest that someone interested in burining candles pick this up and give it a read before they buy another book. I would also say that this book is a good companion to "The master book of candle burning" by Henri Gamache.
There are some helpful illustrations and diagrams for the first time candle lighter. This book is worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Good little booklet.......2005-01-19

This is a 62 page book filled with a treasure of valueable candle burning techniques. There are some basic drawings and charts, details of different types of candles, days and colors, a few magical seals, zodiacal information and more. The cover is also well done showing many types of the 7-day variety candles available on the market today.

5 out of 5 stars Great starters manual.......2004-01-30

This book is wonderfull for those who are just starting to learn candle work. I highly reccomend it to anyone who works candles.

5 out of 5 stars A welcome edition to any magical library.......2003-01-29

This book is full of information for those who would like to learn about Practical candle burning rituals. This is not a ritual or spell book, but rather a book about the facts and fundementals of candle burning. It explains many of the different types of candles available for use with illustrations in wonderful detail, much more than many of the other books Ive read. I also liked this book because it's not based on any particular religous path, instead it makes the information understandable to anyone from any spiritual tradition. I highly reccomend this work and hope you all enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good for New commers to the craft..........2000-08-07

This was the first book that I read about the craft. And I credit it with turning my eye to this most ancient of beliefs... It is a very helpful resource, with basic spells and ceremonies, symbolism of candles and their colors. It also has a pretty complete list of Deities. And it also contains a resource list in the back with names and addresses of stores in which to purchase supplies...I think this book is a must have for anyone that is curious about Wicca, or anybody that would like to follow the path of the Goddess.

4 out of 5 stars The Magick of Candleburning.......2000-03-26

This book was really great! The author really represents and shows the fine art of candleburning. If you are intereted in the Craft I definately suggest this book to people of all ages. The author really seems to know what she's talking about. It's good to those beginning learners and could have a giant impact on those who aren't so knew to the craft. As I said before this is a great book to those interested in the craft. I know many people like myself that read this book and certainly won't forget the wonderful experience.

      Book Description

Light in a Burning-Glass introduces readers to the distinctive synthesis of theological reflection and everyday faith that characterizes the life and theology of Austin Farrer (1904-1968), a man widely considered to be the most important Anglican theologian of the twentieth century. Often quoted for isolated insights but rarely appreciated for his depth and coherency, Farrer is a theologian who, according to Robert Boak Slocum, is fascinating to consider but difficult to master. In this survey and explanation of the Anglican leader's prodigious output and complexity of thought, Slocum sorts through Farrer's many writings to articulate his theological vision.

Slocum delves into Farrer's treatises, essays, lectures, correspondence, and reviews in an exploration of his three primary areas of theological concern: pastoral, biblical, and philosophical. Noting that few theologians have published so many significant works in such varied areas of theological study, Slocum maps the connectedness of thought that unites Farrer's works.

Slocum moves from a basic study of Farrer's background and methodology to a consideration of his major themes, including his understanding of Christian hope, the problem of evil, the role of image and imagination in Christian faith, the use of literary methods in the interpretation of theology, and the interplay of divine action and human freedom in the Christian life.

      5 out of 5 stars Magnified Vision.......2007-05-06

This book by Robert Boak Slocum is a fine introduction to Austin Farrer, who is considered by many to have been the greatest Anglican theologian in the 20th century. Consisting of seven short chapters, each of which deals with a specific theme, Slocum's work is something like a theological encomium to Farrer. He clearly has a grasp on the material, delineating it in a systematic fashion, but also including a number of Farrer's own statements. The reader is given the sense that rather than being introduced by Farrer to Slocum (which is how these types of books can sometimes come across), the reader is introduced by Slocum to Farrer himself - which is exactly how it should be.

After a preface entitled "The Challenge and Promise of Farrer", in which Slocum encourages us to heed Farrer's statement that we need to go "beyond our powers and out of our depth" (xiii), the first chapter briefly looks at Farrer's personal background, the method of his theological work and his major theological perspectives. This chapter is well joined to the second chapter, which looks briefly at some of the major systematic trends in Farrer's thought. The third - seventh chapters ultimately get into the real meat of Farrer's theology; each chapter has a specific focus: the eschaton, theodicy, Farrer's notion of "transforming images", poetic and literary inspiration, and finally the relationship of God's action with free will.

The fifth and sixth chapters are worth the price of admission alone. In the fifth chapter is a discussion of Farrer's ideas about images - both verbal and artistic - as being central to human imagination and understanding. He grounds his view with the theological claim that "the rejection of idolatry meant not the destruction but the liberation of images" (52). One is given the sense that this facet of Farrer's thought is rich for the development of theological aesthetics - including but not limited to something such as iconography. Images, in Farrer's theology, are given through revelatory events, and seen through "inspired vision" (55) of the sort that the Apostles had.

In the sixth chapter, one is brought face-to-face with the fact that Farrer was well ahead of his time with his ideas about literary interpretations of the Bible. Farrer held that inspiration was the "midway point between poetry and metaphysics" (64) and that, because the Bible was an inspired text, rather than being read as a work of theology, a work such as The Gospel According to St. Mark should be read as "a play of images and allusions of the subtle and elusive kind which belongs to the imagination rather than to rational construction" (70). Slocum notes some of the criticisms made of Farrer in his day on precisely this point, as well as the way that he has been picked up and defended by literary critic Frank Kermode (in The Genesis of Secrecy). One is inclined to think that the Bible might be - at least in Farrer's hands - something like a truly divine text to be read critically and immanently, imaginatively and deeply.

Slocum is wonderfully transparent throughout the majority of this book, and is seen only at those times when connections are drawn between Farrer's work and other Anglican theologians. I confess, however, that although I appreciate his desire to draw links between Farrer and those that preceded him - such as American theologian William Porcher Dubose - and those that came after him - such as John MacQuarrie - his inclusion of the thematic similarities within the narrative sometimes subtracted from the narrative itself. It's interesting, for example, that Dubose and Farrer thought similarly about a number of things, but am I supposed to think that Dubose influenced Farrer? At no point does Slocum claim so; is the claim, then, implicit? I think that Slocum's desire here is to show that there are continuities of thought within the Anglican tradition, but rather than scattering these comparisons throughout the text, it would have been preferable to have read about these thematic connections in a concluding chapter - especially as the book itself does not have a conclusion, which is a bit of a disappointment.

For those seeking a clear introduction to Farrer's theology, as well as to some of the ways in which it connects with the theology of some other Anglican thinkers, Light in a Burning Glass is a fine place to begin. Along with the recent reader put out by Canterbury Press, The Truth Seeking Heart, inquiring and interested minds will have fine glimpse through the Burning-Glass to divine light.
