"Harry was a white dog with black spots who liked everything, except getting a bath." Taking matters into his own paws, he buries his family's scrubbing brush in the backyard and runs away from home before they can wrangle him into the tub. Harry gets dirty playing in the street, dirtier at the railroad, and dirtier still playing tag with the other dogs. When sliding down the coal chute, he actually changes from a white dog with black spots to a black dog with white spots! Of course, by the time he gets home he is completely unrecognizable to his family--even when he does all his clever flip-flopping tricks. In a stroke of doggy genius, he unearths the bath brush, begs for a bath, and the rest is history. Youngsters will completely relate to the urge to rebel, the thrill of getting dirty, and, finally, the reassurance of family. Gene Zion and Margaret Bloy Graham's Harry the Dirty Dog, first published in 1956 and now rereleased with splashes of color added by the artist herself, is one of those picture books that children never forget. (Ages 3 to 8) --Karin Snelson

Customer Reviews:
Harry, you dirty dog.......2007-09-15
Poor Harry, he likes everything but taking a bath. He's got white hair with black spots. One day, he meanders around town and finds nothing but dirt. By the time he winds up home, he is filthy and no one recognizes him -- he's now got "black" hair and white spots. Harry can't believe they don't recognize his tricks and then he decides to get the dog brush and race up to the tub. Lo and behold, a little soap and water, and suddenly the family realizes its Harry. Boy, are they happy he's home. This is a fun book with wonderful illustrations. We have an original first edition of the book and my three children and I love reading about Harry. The little one, 2 1/2, loves pointing at a dirty Harry and asking "is that Harry?". When I answer yes, he is always quite relieved.
Timeless........2007-07-23
This was one of my favorite books as a child in Australia. Now as a father in America, it has become on of my childrens' favorite books too. Give your children (and yourself) a lifetime of smiles and warm fuzzies with this one.
Favorite book.......2007-06-30
I bought this to replace the one from my childhood. Timeless book. No child should be without.
Harry the Dirty Dog a clean sweep in the classroom.......2007-06-08
This is a classic story no pre-school or kindergarten classroom should be without. It was Doggie week at our school and Harry was a BIG hit.
Great, great book!.......2007-03-16
Well, here's Harry at 50, great little dog, keeps going like the Energizer Bunny! I bought this one after loving it as a child myself and my little one wants it read over, and over.. and keeps asking for more Harry books. This one, poor Harry decides he doesn't want a bath, hides his brush in the yard even and then takes off for some adventure. He has so many fun adventures, even with some of his fellow chums, and is so dirty when he gets back home that his family doesn't recognize him. Well, he digs up his brush and runs upstairs for a bath. After they start to give him one, they realize that it is their Harry. Great, great little book and I highly recommend it!

This was one of my favorite books as a kid so I knew that I HAD to get it for my son, especially since he loves dogs too. This edition is so cute, and the board book makes it perfect for little hands that like to rip paper. I plan to get this for future kid gifts.
Book Description
"The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" is among the most infamous documents of antisemitism. A forgery created in Russia by the czarist secret police and quickly translated into a host of languages, it portrayed Judaism as a worldwide conspiracy dedicated to the destruction of Christian civilization. The appearance of the Protocols sparked a number of bloody pogroms and it helped shape the thinking of right-wing movements worldwide from Hitler's Nazis to contemporary antisemitic groups in Russia, the Middle East and the United States. A work of intellectual history, A Rumor About the Jews expresses the connection between antisemitism and the overarching political assault upon the enlightenment legacy taking the reader on a historical journey that provides a new and penetrating understanding of an insidious ideology and its broader implications.
Customer Reviews:
A study of Anti-semitism from a Secular Jewish Viewpoint.......2002-08-22
The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is still worth reading about since it one of those books that it helped start a social movement of increased intolerance and violence towards Jews in Nazi Germany. It is still taken seriously in the present-day middle east.
Author Stephen Bronner's most interesting point is that the Protocols was written in reaction against modernity and its components of a republican state, rule of law, democratic liberalism, universal suffrage, universal equal rights, and separation of church and state. The reactionary forces of the church and aristocracy were against the liberal forces of Jews, freemasons, and the middle class mainly because they wanted to hold on to their arbitrary power over their subjects.
Another observation is that Bronner shows why many Jews support cosmopolitanism and separation of church and state so much; those two things the Protocols opposed with nationalism and the church. Such ideas give the Jews more freedom and equality than they would have under a Christian government or a nation that defines its true citizenry on the basis of race. Nationalism often has a racial component to it as opposed to a cosmopolitanism that pretends that race does not matter.
In the last chapter, Bronner analyzes contemporary anti-semitism and racial nationalism. He advocates that more conservative Jews should even give up their cultural and genetic heritage to the inevitable march of progress, modernity, and cosmopolitanism. Those who resist multiculturalism will be the inevitable losers. To be a racial nationalist is to join forces with the likes that support the values of anti-semites. He poses the question that once antisemitism is removed from society, the Jews themselves may vanish because they will no longer be the persecuted 'others'. But of course, one can think that there are seeds of destruction in excessive cosmopolitanism also.
The Protocols are reprinted in the book. It is clumsily written propaganda, but it came along at the right time and it plays upon fears that people still have today: autocratic world government, destruction of Christianity, planned economic depressions, indoctrination of children in schools of values parents are against, control of the news media that doesn't tell the truth, mindless entertainment to destract citizens from their vanishing freedoms and wealth, and planned spread of diseases for population control. Bronner gives the history of the creation and appearance of the Protocols in Russia in 1905 when the reactionary and anti-semitic monarchy enthusiastically supported its discimination.
A sloppy history of anti-Semitism........2001-01-20
This is a good book because first it is short and easy to read, it discusses a notorious fabrication or conspiracy theory, and it shows just how confused the Jewish position is with regards to the "other" or antisemitism. The author seems to meander between numerous concepts and explanations of antisemitism, but never really embraces a coherent theme. Oddly, this is very similar to "The Protocols" that he attacks.
We have of course many venues of indoctrination, and "The Protocols" is just one of many. Why anyone would write a book about such a pamphlet that is an obvious forgery over 100 years old, and treat it like a present day threat is a real mystery. In addition, the author seems to be trying to convince Jews to somehow change their behavior, while he excoriates all Gentiles for their insane obsession with antisemitism. He tends to vacillate between "there is no more antisemitism" and "Jews had better give up their world view of domination or people will again become anti-Semitic." He in many ways confirms that Jewishness, unlike other religions, is really a supremacist position that embraces dominance over the "other." He openly discusses the Jewish obsession with racial purity and what will be required to stop intermarriage.
What is lacking in this and books like it, is a real analysis of what we now know about group evolutionary strategies. Kevin MacDonald's trilogy on Jew-Gentile competition, based on group evolutionary strategies, makes this book a transparent work of mere propaganda. Anyone familiar with the neo-Darwinist position on group behavior will recognize what this book is all about trying to make the world safe for Judaism (that is the race, not the religion).
The best book to read to understand this book is MacDonald's "The Culture of Critique: An Evolutionary Analysis of Jewish Involvement in Twentieth-Century Intellectual and Political Movements." As an academically reviewed book, and part of the "Human Evolution, Behavior, and Intelligence" series of books edited by Seymour W. Itzkoff, it explains why and for what purpose this book was written.

Gene Zion's plant sitter still retains the excitment it held many years ago. Students are dazzled with the illustrations and more importantly the adventures of the plant sitter. The book makes a great read aloud, and a super introduction to an elementary unit on plant study!

Customer Reviews:
Harry Just Does Not Like Roses.......2007-05-08
When Grandma sends the family a sweater for Harry, he knows right away he doesn't like it. It was a green sweater with roses on it. Harry is white dog with black spots and that's the look he likes. He tries to lose the sweater time and time again, but people keep bringing it back, then a bird grabs a lose strand and flies away, unravelling the sweater as she goes. Soon the sweater is gone, vanishing before Harry's eyes and he is happy. But then he learns Grandma is coming to visit and he is worried.
The family looks all over for the sweater, but can't find it. Then when Grandma arrives, she takes Harry for a walk in the park and up in a tree they see a bird with a new nest which looks exactly like Harry's sweater. This is a nice story. My little guy just loves it and frankly I prefer these children's books from the middle of the last century. They really knew how to illustrate them back then.
A Classic!.......2007-03-16
One thing I have found myself doing is going back and buying all these classic books that I read as a youngster. My little one LOVES Harry! He's just as popular with the kids today as he was 50 years ago when he first was published. He gets read over, and over, and over..... in our house and I keep getting requests for more Harry books! Highly recommend!
Enjoyed it all over again!.......2006-11-11
I loved this book as a child and loved it all over again when I read it with my siblings. They enjoyed it all over again as well. It sparked a good talk about our stories of growing up. It was fun!
An Old Favorite.......2006-05-02
I love this one! Poor Harry doesn't like the roses on his new sweater from Grandma. He keeps trying (and failing) to "lose" it, and becomes depressed. His mood is saved by a bird that swoops in to unravel the sweater for a nest - and Grandma sends Harry a new, better sweater in the end, so everyone winds up happy. Great muted colors and "retro"-style illustrations, too.
Engaging reading .......2005-10-09
My 4 year old daughter loves reading this book by herself; she just can not get enough. It is a lovely companion book to Harry and the Lady Next door.

brilliant invitation to readers.......2007-04-14
The "Harry" series by Zion and Graham remain monumental fixed images in the memories of my youth. I teach rhetoric in a Japanese university and stumbled upon these books in the children's reading section of our school's library. My seven-year-old daughter had fished "Harry by the Sea" out of one of the shelves and brought it to me. What a stroke of serendipity! In seeing the cover, I was immediately taken back to my youth. Wow! The story of Harry invited me so often to its pages that I can still remember all of the details. These books represent a brilliant blend of narrative and illustration. Graham's ability to capture the level of expression on the faces of the characters in pastels is amazing. Zion's introduction to simple, compound and complex sentences is a perfect primer for young readers. In their ability to arrest a young reader's attention, these works are easily on the level of Seuss's.
Harry the sea monster.......2004-05-08
Harry gets into another of his adventures, this time turning into a seaweed monster at the beach. The illustrations are delightful and it's a fun read.
Wonderful Story!.......2002-04-01
I have had this book since 1969 when I was 6 years old. It is a treasured part of my childhood! It tells the story of a lovable dog Harry and his family spending an eventful day at the beach. Children and adults alike will love this cuddly tale.
An adorable dog, kids, beach, adventure. 'nuff said!.......1999-05-15
This book instantly became a bedtime favorite with each of my kids (boy and girl). Harry is adorable, and just enough mischief and adventure (and smelly seaweed!) to keep the little one's attention, and to keep young readers turning the pages. You'll love it too.
Highly recommend this book!.......1998-03-04

Customer Reviews:
As Much Fun Now As When I was a Kid.......2003-09-05
I grew up with this book and never knew of the others in the series. Seeing as my daughter loves dogs I had to buy this when I saw it in this new edition.
An opera singer has moved into the house next to Harry's. The singer practices all day long, singing loud and high. Harry does not like this sound. Harry tries a number of ways to get her to stop. These do not please his family. But finally, a good way is found and everyone is happy.
As a parent, one of the things I like about this book is that it is clear that Harry is not being good when he howls, leads cows or a marching band, or other tricks. Although we want Harry to succeed, we also want it to be in the right and good way. This book knows the difference.
I loved this book as a kid and I still do. My daughter loves it (hopefully my son will too).
harry and the lady next door.......2001-04-20
I like Harry and the lady Next Door because Harry doesnt like her sining. I also like this book because Harry brings all these animals. home and the lady sings louder than them. These are reasons why you should read these books.
Harry the Wonder Dog!.......1999-09-22
Harry goes to desperate lengths to silence the lady next door - her singing is too high and loud. He howls, bits piano legs, steals music, chases cows and bands, but finally succeeds, to everyones' relief. Even the lady next door is happy.
I read this as a child, as did my brothers. This is the first story that my 5 year old has shown an interest in reading by himself. Thanks Harry!

Customer Reviews:
a moving description of a recent and little known diaspora.......2000-04-11
This is a phenomenally moving book about the flight of Jewish children to the far corners of the globe in search of safety from the Holocaust. Grynberg's story is about the little known deportation of Jewish children and their families who found themselves in the Soviet Union in the early years of the war and were sent to Siberia and Central Asia for internment. Many of these people were unable to return to their homes after the war and remained in Eastern Russia or Uzbekistan. This is an excellent book.

faith promoting.......2002-01-26
...history (people) will love it, even those who arent into history will get a kick out of it. especially the youth. all these stories are actual events that happened to youth and children while traveling from Illinois to Utah. it is really cool. these teenagers had an amazing amount of faith to go through what they did.
