Book Description
"Green Development is good for business. Tenants, owners, purchasers, and brokers are all becoming more sophisticated and are realizing the financial and social benefits of green product." --Gerald Hines, Chairman of Hines.
Environmentally responsible real estate development makes dollars and sense. Green Development describes an exciting new field in which environmental considerations are viewed as opportunities to create fundamentally better buildings and communities--more comfortable, more efficient, more appealing, and ultimately more profitable.
If you're a developer, architect, planner, contractor, lender, or city official, this book speaks your language. Every stage of the development process is examined in detail: market research, site planning, design, approvals, financing, construction, marketing, and occupancy. Also included are lists of project statistics and contacts, books and other information sources, and development strategies.
Based on 80 case studies drawn from Rocky Mountain Institute's extensive worldwide research and consulting work, Green Development distills proven procedures and practical lessons that work in the real world.
Customer Reviews:
Great Overview.......2007-01-25
An excellent overview of the evolving movement towards green development. The book is somewhat dated and lacks in-depth coverage in some areas. Regardless effectively gets you into the space.
Throughly presents sustainable land development.......1998-12-02
This book throughly presents sustainable real estate development. It answers the basic questions of how, what, when, why and who with text and photos illustrating numerous case studies.
It is written for a wide and concerned audience, composed of real estate professionals, financiers and designers. This book is not technical. It is a conceptual book and guides the reader toward sustainable solutions.
This subject is very large and this book is necessarily a summary, which includes recent projects.
This book does not "preach to the choir". It addresses difficult obstacles to the sustainable development paradigm and provides workable solutions.

Customer Reviews:
the publishing date should be correted !.......2006-09-14
Hi the Author and Amazon team, you should correct the publishing date.
Lots of experience in 150 pages.......2006-03-14
In my MBA program I have encountered endless writings on management theory. This book puts it in simple language. There is no buzz or catch words, just the real stuff. Get rid of the countless 300 hundred page books and go with the one that gets to the real points in 150.
Impactful, a must for every manager!.......2003-11-25
This book is perfect for every manager who wishes to increase his/her capacity as a manager, but doesn't want to read countless pages on the "A, B, C's" of Management. Alex Malone conveys his message in a personable way that most managers will identify with, relaying personal experience and learnings that we can relate to and learn from to become better people managers. This book is definitely not the "same old thing" and offers a unique viewpoint into effective people management. Even highly experienced managers will find themselves easily identifying areas for improvement, resulting in stronger management skills and more productive teams. Highly Recommended!
More than just an effective and practical guide........2003-11-06
If you are a team manager or aspiring to become one, 'Managing Your Greatest Assets' will likely promote thought, provide insight and evoke unexpected laughter. The author skillfully describes numerous experiences while evolving as a manager with refreshing clarity and warmth. He shares his successes, failures and practical lessons intelligently in a concise and very readable style. I highly recommend this book. Well done, Alex.
A Sure Bet.......2003-10-24
I have not read this book yet, but will bet it is right on the mark. Alex and I worked together through his learning years (side by side). The environment, business state and people challenges taught us both alot. The successes were many and achievements great. In the end, Alex gets his biggest kick out of watching people develop and grow. Today many of those folks are at a place they could never of imagined. Having work beside, watched and contributed, I am absolutely thrilled to see Alex share his values and approach.
Congrats ! my friend. You have made a difference.

Book Description
In many parts of the Jewish world it is taken for granted that today we live in a "post-Zionist" era, that Jewish nationalism is (was) a "quaint" idea that may have made sense at one time - when downtrodden Jews needed a safe haven from persecution - but no longer has contemporary relevance, and that Israel is not, or at least not to be, the central focus of the Jewish world. If Alex Singer had been alive today, he would have strongly disagreed with all those points: That was not the life he lived and it certainly was not the ideal for which he died.
Most readers may never have heard of Alex Singer, an American Jew by birth, an Israeli and an officer in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) by choice. Alex's life was cut tragically short by a terrorist's bullet while he led his platoon on a patrol in Southern Lebanon. Just how great the tragedy becomes clear when reading the selections from Alex's writings (letters and diaries) and his drawings that are gathered by his parents and published as Alex - Building a Life.
Alex was a remarkable young man. Earnest, studious, and industrious, Alex was a success at everything he did: including college at Cornell University and a yearlong stay as a transfer student at the London School of Economics. Despite his lofty academic credentials, Alex also never forgot his Jewish roots: he writes many letters about a trip to Russia and his meetings with Refuseniks. Alex also never questioned his path after college: Aliya, Army service, officer school, culminating in a posting to a platoon in the IDF's elite Givati Brigade.
Two details shine through immediately: Alex sensitivity and his Jewish heart. In training his men, for example, Alex always followed what he considered the "Jewish way": never to dehumanize the enemy, never to stoop to the level of terrorists. In following this line of thought Alex wrote a journal entry entitled "Idea for Teaching the Difference of a Jewish Army." His point was that the IDF should/would never attempt to emulate the Nazis, or even the Arabs, by dehumanizing its foes. Instead, Jewish troops had to view its enemies as people. Alex noted that this is the "Jewish way" and also noted that such a policy "keeps us in control of our actions."
Rabbi Joseph Teluskin summarized the entire story when he said that Alex understood what it means to be a moral human being, a committed Jew, and a mensch.
(Avraham Edelheit, Jewish Book World, Spring 1997)
Customer Reviews:
Alex - a microcosm of Israel.......2006-02-24
This book is a gem. I had bought it while on a trip in Israel, where we visited Alex's parents, met his brother and also went to his grave to pay our respects. Alex represented the qualities of a hero who fought for what he believed in and in the end paid with his life for Israel, the Jewish state. I loved reading about the many stories that made up his life during the army, especially the story about looking for the Teffilin. You will immediately be placed in Alex's world once you dwelve into this book. I highly recommend it. I couldn't put it down.
Experience Alex Singer's Zionism, Compassion and Strength.......2005-03-19
If this book had been simply about an IDF soldier who made aliyah, it would have been interesting at that. However, this book is that and so much more. It is an opportunity to experience how determined a young soldier can be, how focused and centered on his beliefs a young man can be and how warm and compassionate a young Jewish son, brother and friend can be... in his own words, at the time he was making these decisions and having these experiences. It is an opportunity to experience Alex's Zionism, compassion and strength. Every letter/journal entry written by Alex moved me and I am not often moved by books and by people whom I have never met. I recommend this book as highly as I possibly can.
An Israeli hero .......2004-10-18
Alex Singer was an American Jew who volunteered to fight in the Army of Israel. He did this because he believed in the Jewish's people's need for , and right to a historical homeland. He during his period of service acted with courage and real human consideration of others. He was not a hater but a person who sought peace, and the human face of the enemy.
He represents the best of the Jewish people in their struggle to return and build their ancient homeland . He embodied the highest both in humane consideration and dedication to Jewish ideals.
This volume of his letters collected posthumously by his parents tells of his story and struggle in a deeply moving way.
Words cannot explain.......2003-04-12
Alex's story is the definitive account of a true lover of Israel. Any one who has had thoughts about their own Zionist, Jewish beliefs must refer to this book for nothing less than spiritual guidance. Live life to the fullest through Alex's shoes, and cry when you realize his last letter was never finished. Alex Singer was a true hero to Israel and the Jewish people all over the world, as he made sure that one more family on the Lebanese border in 1987 could sleep soundly. Am Israel chai.
Alex's book has the potential to change lives........1999-07-20
Alex's writings convey powerfully and persuasively, an attitude and tone of voice that seems to be heard less and less. It's a voice that says that life is a gift to be lived fully, joyfully, spontaneously; that Judaism has the power and depth to challenge and enrich every Jew, and through them to improve the world; that doing for others is the most effective--the only--way of fulfilling yourself; and that Israel is the Jewish home and that instead of rejecting it for its faults we should work to correct them. Alex writes beautifully and honestly. His drawings are vivid and personal

Book Description
"The problem of the house is a problem of the epoch," stated Swiss architect Le Corbusier; architecture, he felt, should focus on everyday life and produce housing that is "made for living in." In The Problem of the House, Alex Anderson explores a group of like-minded designers in France, the architects-décorateurs, who also committed themselves to designing and equipping the modern house. Most began as decorative artists, interior designers, and painters but moved into the field of architecture in the 1920s. They envisioned an environment conceived by architects, in which the traditional decorative arts would be replaced with domestic equipment, often standardized and mass-produced, with works of art selected by the occupants themselves. This concern with the house shaped Western European, and especially French, Modernist architecture. The author traces the development of these ideas in France from the Salons d'Automne displays of 1900 through the post-World War I period, when the early modern architects, influenced by Cubism and Art Nouveau, established architecture as a human-centered art based on relationships, not on obedience to rules. Figures include photographs of interior ensembles exhibited at the Salons d'Automne in the early 1900s, illustrations of urban plans and structures, stills from film sets that expressed the design concepts of the architects-décorateurs, and views of living spaces built for clients and for the architects themselves.
The Problem of the House will appeal to art and architectural historians, students and scholars of architecture, interior designers, and decorative artists.

Excellent for Groups or Individuals........2004-09-21
I personally found this Bible study to be excellent for both small-group and individual self study and reflection.
Each study includes an inspiring witness to ordinary people displaying Christ-like character. Each witness story is followed by a thought provoking self-assessment and a reflective Bible study. The capstone of each study helps you set a concise, attainable goal reinforcing one Christ-like character principle (love, respect, grace, giving, fairness, integrity, courage, and responsibility). Each week's goal will have you reinforcing a new Christ-like character principle, helping you lead a more Christ-like life.
The authors obviously put a lot of thought and effort into the layout and structure of this Bible study. Well done! The stories provide inspiration, the Holy Bible provides wisdom, and the exercises provide spark and energy. Together these elements help you become accountable and build your more Christ-like character. This study helped me "raise the bar" to become more Christ-like in all that I am and do.
Generates great discussion for groups.......2004-09-15
We used a this work for an inter-faith Lenten weekly worship/study event between two neighboring churches. It was a very effective way to generate good discussions about living out a life of faith and character in our daily lives. The stories, written by real, everyday people, helped everyone relax into the conversation. They were easy to relate to. Plus Britzman's thought-provoking questions made us think about what it means to be Christ-like in ways that are practical and real, not sanctamonious and unattainable. Good stuff. Try it in groups or for your own personal study.

Book Description
Because of the profound effects of the built environment on the availability of natural resources for future generations, those involved with designing, creating, operating, renovating, and demolishing human structures have a vital role to play in working to put society on a path toward sustainability.
This volume presents the thinking of leading academics and professionals in planning, civil engineering, economics, ecology, architecture, landscape architecture, construction, and related fields who are seeking to discover ways of creating a more sustainable built environment. Contributors address the broad range of issues involved, offering both insights and practical examples. In the book:
- Stephen Kellert describes the scope of the looming ecological crisis
- Herman Daly explains the unsustainability of the world's economic system and the dangers inherent in the current movement toward globalization
- John Todd describes the evolution of wastewater processing systems inspired by natural systems
- John Tillman Lyle discusses the importance of landscape in the creation of the human environment
- Randall Arendt argues for a fundamental shift in land development patterns that would not only provide for more green space in new developments, but would also increase the profitability of developers and the quality of life for new home owners
- Thomas E. Graedel proposes the application of lessons learned from the emerging science of industrial ecology to the creation of "green" building.
While the transition to sustainability will not be easy, natural systems provide abundant models of architecture, engineering, production, and waste conversion that can be used in rethinking the human habitat and its interconnections. This volume provides insights that can light the way to a new era in which a reshaped built environment will not only provide improved human living conditions, but will also protect and respect the earth's essential natural life-support systems and resources.

A comprehensive look at our environment.......1999-06-03
A comprehensive analysis and commentary on America's physical and social infrastructure, Kilbert has compiled an impressive list of authors/environmental policy specialists. They speak to issues as seemingly diverse as the moral burdens being placed on future generations by short sighted environmental policy to practical solutions ( the Brownfields initiative)for reusing old industrial land in the inner city--a valuable text for anyone involved in shaping public policy in the near future.
