A Crazy Mixed-up School.
There'd been a terrible mistake. Wayside School was supposed to be built with thirty classrooms one on top of the other...thirty stories tall! (The builder said he was very sorry.)
That may be why all kinds of funny things happen at Wayside SChool...especially on the thirteenth floor. You'll meet Mrs. Gorf, the meanest teacher of all, terrible Todd, who always gets sent home early, and John who can read only upside down--along with all the other kids in the crazy mix-up school that came out sideways. But you'll never guess the truth about Sammy, the new kid...or what's in store for Wayside School on Halloween!
There was a terrible mistake-Wayside School was built with one classroom on top of another, thirty stories high! (The builder said he was sorry.) Maybe that's why all kinds of funny things happened at Wayside-especially on the thirteenth floor.

Wayside School boxed set.......2007-09-28
I remember these books from when I was in elementry school. I loved them then, and can still remember the wacky stories. I loved them so much in fact that I wanted my own son to read, and enjoy them as much as I did.
Wacky, hilarious, and a great price!.......2007-07-22
The humour, wackiness, and strange characters make this such a great book for young readers. The very creative stories are quite strange, but they are also highly loveable, and will be treasured by readers.
super value.......2007-05-09
Great set! My daughter loves these stories (and I do too!), so we probably should have gotten these in hardcover since they will get a lot of wear & tear.
Great book.......2007-03-09
I first read these books when I was about 11. Now I have an 11 yr old and a 9 yr old. Neither of which like to read. They both read the first book, and picked up the others and read them without being asked. Now they are reading all his other books. It definetly gave my kids the joy of reading.

Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Down (book 2).......2007-10-01
I would recommend this series for anyone. I have already read through books 1-6 and am waiting for book #7 that will come out this week. I liked the series so much I now am buying a set of my own and am passing them around my church and friends to read. It will open your eyes to see how different ethnic groups look at church and prayer and how they see life from their culture. Book #2 brings the group together even more and starts to have an effect on the husbands and children. There is so much good in these books, I thank God for Neta Jackson and her talent for writing them. What a blessing!
Great Book.......2007-08-11
This book carries the Yada Yada's further and closer to the Lord. I loved it.
Real Life Fiction.......2007-03-02
The Yada Yada Prayer Group has been meeting for a while now and everyone is starting to get used to each other. Even though the group is very diverse, friendships are beginning to flourish and everyone is starting to open up little by little. But then one night at a group meeting, a woman comes into Jodi's house and threatens the group with a knife causing many old wounds to be opened in the group. Other issues with racism, anger, and trust put the group through a tough time as it tests all how strong is their friendship and their faith.
First off, I love love love the Yada Yada book series. I wish I was in a group like this. I love how this book series is very daring in the topics it chooses. Racism is something that most Christian books avoid because it's a touchy subject. Since the book is told from Jodi's POV, it's very easy to take her side on the issue with Ma Dear, Denny, and Adele. You get frustrated with everyone for not communicating with each other, yet at the same time you realize why both sides act the way they do. I also love how the group visits the different churches. It's nice to see them in the setting of a different denominations and have a new worship experience. Again since Jodi is the main character, you feel her pain and frustration. I felt the same way she did about certain issues. Some of the other characters seem a little too perfect at times, like how they are immediately ready to forgive Becky for what she did to them. I know that we should forgive those who hurt us, but It didn't seem realistic that people would be willing to open up their arms like that so soon. Sometimes you feel that since there are so many women in the group, it's hard to keep track of them all. I keep mixing up some of them or I forgot who's even in the group. I think that Jodie herself mentions this issue about whether or not the group is too big to keep close relationships with everyone. But it's really cool how diverse the group is, all races and ages are represented allowing readers of all ages to enjoy the book.
If you haven't already read the first book in the series, I definitely recommend it. This series is one of my favorites, the books are page-turners, you laugh, you cry, you get angry, you get irritated, it's like reading a slice of real life.
I love theYada Yada Prayer Group Series!!!.......2006-12-01
I enjoyed reading every book of this series. I just completed book 5 (the last of the series) and what a let down this has been. The book's characters are so lovable and I feel like I am missing my friends. Neta Jackson's characters are so different and unique. I related to all the characters and laughed and cried along with them. Even though these books have a Christian theme, I believe anyone would enjoyed this series. I even want my husband to read the series (he's too busy now, but is interested in reading them because he knows how much I loved reading them.) I hope my review has caused you run out and buy the complete series. I am sure it will give you lots of pleasure. Be sure to read them in order from the first Yada Yada Prayer Group to book 5 of the series. I went on Neta Jackson's web site and she said that she's working on book 6!!
Peace.
The Yada Yada Prayer Group books - ALL of them.......2006-11-04
I have never enjoyed books more than these. For someone living in the Chicago area they are a delight to read as the streets and the buildings mentioned are all so familiar. The way the author weaves together people from all walks of life to form a prayer group that gets down to business with the Lord and gets things done is so neat to see. I wish we could all follow this example.
Book Description
We all have dreams and expectations of life. But life is unpredictable. No matter what we do or how we live, we are certain to encounter trials and setbacks, frustrations and real suffering. The question is, how are we to respond when we are blindsided by troubles? What can we do when life knocks the wind out of us?
If you’re like most people, when hardship hits you can think of countless situations you’d rather be in. Yet the secret of making it through is in learning how to make right choices and thrive in the middle of difficulty.
In Get Over It and On with It!, outspoken Bible teacher Michelle McKinney Hammond finds contemporary application in the ancient stories of several men and women who took the path from suffering to overcoming. Their journeys teach us how to press through hardship and get to the other side of our disappointment.

I absolutely loved this book! I read it when I was in the process of a divorce. It helped me so much!! Michelle Hammond is my girl, she really allows the Lord to use her in her writing!
Just what I needed.......2006-08-11
This book is perfect. Whether you're going through something huge or something small. All struggles seem huge to us at the time and this book gives a breath of fresh air and a little break from what you are going through. Michelle (as always) takes a very Biblical perspective on the struggles and hard times that we face in life. The hard times will not stop coming as long as we are living, so we might as well get used to getting back on our feet. She allows time for grief and helps make sense of things that seem senseless. She also gives simple reminders like eating and resting and taking care of your temple during these hard times. God is good and I'm so glad to have authors like Michelle out there who can really offer wisdom. A great book. I'll read it again the next time life knocks me down and do the questions after each section for deeper understanding.
Get Over It and On with It; How to Get Up When Life Knocks You Down.......2005-09-26
I received this book promptly. It was well-packaged and in excellent condition.
A book that actually helps.......2005-06-04
This book is full of excellent advice. I don't usually read this genre and still I found this book very useful it uses the bible to help solve today's problems. This book gave me a new prospective on the way I was looking at certain situations in my life. The author was brief and to the point, always reminding the reader to look for the answer in God's Holy bible all though the men and women who lived in a day when people took a closer walk with God. The author also showed that the men and women in those day went through similar situations as we do today. The book discusses every thing from financial trouble to death, I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to cope with the everyday stress that life brings.
I Need Help.......2004-05-22
When life is not going the way it was planned what is one to do? A few people turn to outside counseling, some turn to family and friends and many turn to their faith. GET OVER IT AND ON WITH IT is composed of all three elements. Michelle Mckinney Hammond is an inspirational speaker and author of many faith-based self-help books. In GET OVER IT AND ON WITH IT, using the life struggles of biblical characters, Ms. Hammond shows the reader how to overcome their own personal struggles. When reading this book, one has the benefit of outside counsel, the familiar and comforting language of friends and family, and last but not least, the teachings of the Christian faith.
To receive the most benefit from the author's counsel in, GET OVER IT AND ON WITH IT, it should be read at a time when the reader has a need for guidance and perspective. With chapter titles such as "Absorbing the Blow, Getting Back on Your Feet and Standing Firm," the book shows the reader how to be victorious in the fight of and for their life. GET OVER IT AND ON WITH IT gives the reader a warm directional approach to keeping the faith and holding on to hope.

Book Description
It may seem like gardeners belong to a super-secret, esoteric club, made up of members who know all about Latin plant names and mysterious methods familiar only to the serious few. Not true, says Ellen Zachos. She is here to reassure the uninitiated that anyone can have fun in the dirt. As proof she points out the millions who have actually planted something and succeeded in making it grow without a degree in horticulture or vast experience in design and color theory. Anyone can join the gardening ranks.
The secret, Zachos believes, is to start with one small project, make it work (that’s where her expertise comes in!), learn by doing, and move on to the next project. Easy, right? It couldn’t be simpler or more fun, and the immense satisfaction that comes with helping things grow is unbeatable.
Zachos’s broad range of creative projects encourages would-be gardeners to discover the joys of getting down and dirty. There’s something for every taste, from planting a tree to designing a small stonescape to starting a strawberry bed. She even includes a tasty recipe for strawberry sorbet!
The projects teach fundamental skills and give beginners the confidence to keep learning. Taken as a group, they provide the learning blocks of a beginner’s course in planting, designing, and creating. Gardening is really as easy as that. Spend a few weekends on fun projects that brighten up the home and backyard and learn basic gardening skills in the process. Proficiency in Latin is another matter.

Book Description
We live in a difficult world. But life does not have to be a struggle. From the author of the best-selling classic Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway comes a book of inspirational advice that teaches us how to feel calmer, more in control, and excited about life-- despite what is happening around us. With profound insights and practical tools, Susan Jeffers shows us that we don't have to give into the fear, distress, anger, impatience, and hovering sense of danger that pull us down. Instead, we can embrace the joyous emotions of the Spirit that make us soar: trust, gratitude, harmony, abundance, love, and joy.

Susan Jeffers helps her listeners put things in perspective.......2007-01-08
When my local public library had its annual summer book sale, I came across this treasure for a fraction of its list price. I love listening to audiobooks, especially self-help/personal growth audiobooks. Self-help books can range from farcical to truly transformational. I found Susan Jeffers' guidance to be on the transformational side of the self-help spectrum. Ms. Jeffers distinguishes between our lower-selves and our higher-selves (I likewise had come up with my own terms to describe this phenomenon of where we are in our personal development--our regressed/imbalanced selves, our potential/balanced selves, and our in-between selves). Our lower-selves are competitive and ego-driven, seeking validation in the wrong things and in the wrong ways. Our higher-selves are " good enough," to quote Ms. Jeffers verbatim. Susan discusses at length our preoccupation with goals and urges us to reconsider our values and how we seek self-worth.
Marianne Williamson, who endorses this book, also gives good guidance that works synergistically with Ms. Jeffers' advice. I was listening to a self-help audiobook by Ms. Williamson a few months ago when a profound truth really registered with me for the first time. Marianne quoted A Course in Miracles (which I've never read) when she said enlightenment doesn't come from having people no longer say unjust, unkind, or untrue things about you. Enlightenment comes from no longer caring (about these negative words). I remember saying out loud, "Yes! Yes!," excited about this epiphany. I had heard words to the same effect before...consider the source, sticks and stones may break my bones, etc., but something about the way A Course in Miracles emphasized no longer caring really struck a chord with me. Since you can't control what other people do or say to you or about you, this is profoundly helpful advice. Susan also points out that what other people do or say is their way of handling hurt...another incentive to not take things personally, but instead feel compassion (or at the very least, refrain from feeling antipathy) towards people who are attacking us.
Susan Jeffers talks extensively about our lack of control and how we have to accept that we don't have control over many things in the world and in our own lives. We can control our reaction, and that is a powerful thing to be able to control. Most of us have heard that life is 10% what happens to us and 90% our reaction and attitude towards what happens to us. Susan definitely believes our reactions and attitudes are where we live most of the time; therefore, we really need to reevaluate our reactions and attitudes.
Susan says that even though we may not like many of the terrible things going on in the world, we have to consider that we have only a limited understanding of "The Grand Design." In the grand scheme of things, there may be reasons we aren't capable of understanding at this point of time (or ever) why things are the way they are. Susan doesn't advocate passivity, i.e., throwing in the towel since we lack control. But she knows that worrying endlessly about things over which we have no control will help no one and only hurt us. I really needed to hear this...or as some 12-step programs say, "Let Go, Let God."
Only for New Age devotees........2005-04-07
I am going to give this 2 stars instead of only one and only because, not being a New Age believer, I may be being unduly harsh with my criticism. I just have a hard time with this whole Self Help genre.
Truthfully, I only read half the book. Pfff! It never caught my interest. It starts out with an explanation of your Lower Self and your Higher Self as if the evidence of the existence of either is indisputable. Then we move into the obligatory "positive affirmations", physically cleaning out our closets, joining 12 step programs, choosing not to be a victim, meditating, praying, tai chi and on and on.
If you feel that any of this may help you Dance with Life, then I admire your faith. Me, I'll just continue to refill my prescription for Prozac.
Disappointing.......2004-05-13
I have read and highly appreciated two of Jeffers previous books: "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway", and "Dare to Connect". I would give both of those books 5 stars. Unfortunately, as good as Dare to Connect is, it remains out of print and, I believe, this was the motivating force behind writing End the Struggle. It is basically a merging of the two books, yet it does not seem to have the energy and intensity, often coming off a bit naive or pollyannaish.
For me, it was just a review of what I'd read in the previous two books and therefore of little value. It's not fair for me to rate it lower on that alone, however. No, it's lower energy combined with the publisher's trick of reintroducing "Dare to Connect" principles (which is available online used) is what bothered me. We see this a lot. An author writes another book that is basically a rehash of another, or tries to present the same views a little differently just so the public will think it's a "new" book.
A Diamond in a sea of Zircons.......2003-12-22
Susan Jeffers is an incredibly gifted and creative writer. This book has, to spout the usual cliche, changed my life. Coupled with Embracing Uncertainty it has the power to bring clarity to the most confused and troubled psyche but more importantly to spur you on to greater efforts at achieving peace and wonder in a tough world. This is a spiritual text and her message is a consistent spiritual one.
A very beautiful and loving and sustaining book. I highly recommend it.
My Favorite Author.......2003-03-11
This is probably the most helpful book I have ever read. Susan Jeffers talks about living in a world the way it is today and not trying to change things or people. There is a magnificent chapter, TRUST THE FUTURE. This chapter should be read by anyone attempting any kind of life change, be it a new job, a new husband, a new city. She says that in the end, it's all perfect any way. I have already read this book twice and I find myself referring to it often when things do not go the way that I might have wanted. Read this book and you will regret mistakes less and less.

Book Description
Asali Solomon’s characters are vivid misfits—a heathen at Jesus camp, a scheming prep-school student, a middle-aged mom pining for her salsa-dancing salad days, a scheming twentysomething virgin, a college stud in love with his weight-lifting partner, a lonely girl in love with a yellow dress. The kids in Get Down are trapped between their own good breeding and their burning desire to join the house party of sex, romance, and bad behavior that seems to be happening on some other block, down some other more dangerous street. The adults in Get Down are just trying to hold it together.
Here is a debut that will make you laugh and cringe in equal measure. Set mostly in middle-class black Philadelphia during the crack and Reagan years, the stories in Get Down are antic, poignant, and utterly universal—they’ll bring back memories for anyone who has ever stood in the corner of a darkened school gym wondering whether to dance . . . or duck for cover. They announce a sparkling new talent, a recent graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop whose work has been featured in Vibe, Essence, and the anthology Naked: Black Women Bare All About Their Skin, Hair, Hips, Lips, and Other Parts.
Customer Reviews:
Detailed and True.......2006-11-27
This is one sly, deft, funny, and truly moving collection of stories. Solomon has great grace as a stylist and as a chronicler of interior lives. I read the book in one sitting and blushed with recognition and empathy for her deeply realized characters. I also laughed out loud at the wit that studs the entire collection. You're going to love it.
Heartbreaking and funny, sometimes at the same time.......2006-11-14
If you're looking for stories that will make you laugh and ache in sympathy in equal measure, then get started reading right away. Get Down is filled with characters who will earn your love even as they make decisions that will have you talking out loud to them while you're reading, trying to keep them from doing things you know are only going to make their lives harder, which will get embarrassing if you're not by yourself. It won't bother you if you're alone, though, because they seem so real that it won't seem strange to think that maybe if you talk loud enough they might listen to you, even if you know you won't be able stop them. A highly impressive debut from someone to keep an eye on.
Sublime Debut.......2006-11-13
Get Down should be required reading for anyone who's ever felt slightly out of place--a bit too smart, too fat, too black, too white--but who's just not sure if s/he should let on. Solomon's capaciously human characters try, and almost succeed, at concealing their secret, shameful squareness: their hopeless nostalgia, their utterly futile crushes, their nerdy earnestness. It is precisely this slightly out-of-sync quality that makes Solomon's characters so captivating. No description, no matter how elaborately hyphenated the adjectives, could ever pidgeonhole them. Because Solomon's wit is so dead-pan, her characters so young, readers might almost just miss her stories' gut wrenching insights into love, adolescence, and identity. The number of times I laughed out loud was equaled by the number of times I got a knot in my stomach. Solomon deftly fills her finely crafted stories with surprising stylistic touches, too: a story written entirely in the second person, turning you--the reader--into the only unbeliever stuck at a Christian summer camp; the moving "choose-your-own adventure" ending of the last story; the title itself, which brilliantly illustrates the complex tone of the book. Spoken with the right amount of coolness, the phrase "Get Down" can capture the life of the party. But who really has the charisma to pull off that pronunciation? In the mouths of the book's self-conscious adolescents (or its real-life reviewers!), "Get Down" takes on its true ambiguity: a cool phrase spoken by someone who's not. And when you find the phrase in the fourth story, it takes on a whole new meaning, which I'll let you discover for yourself. . . .
UP with Get Down!.......2006-11-12
I have very little time for reading these days, so when I picked up this short-story collection at the bookstore, it was with the express idea of reading a story a day, right before slipping into my nightly coma. But after the first story, I was hooked. I stayed up half the night to read ALL the stories in one sitting, and plan on re-reading them again soon.
Solomon has a great eye for telling details and an equally good ear for dialogue that always rings true. Even if you didn't grow up in West Philadelphia, you will recognize yourself in this book, but it will be the self you--and all of us--abandoned when you did what you had to do to become tough, invulnerable, and popular. Reading these stories reminded me of my wounded and needy self, but also me when I felt life and other people intensely. In this way, these stories are a gift.

Two-time heavyweight boxing champion of the world, he knows what it takes to succeed. He has a wealth of life experience to share, and in George Foreman's Guide to Life: How to Get Up Off the Canvas When Life Knocks You Down he does just that. Here's what George has to say about:
TAKING ADVICE: "The real answers you are looking for are inside of you. The hard part is being able to hear them."
BEING AFRAID OF CHANGE: "Be afraid to stay where you are in life. Stepping out...is what makes you good, better, and even the best at what you're doing."
GETTING OLDER: "Old age is not something that happens to you; it's a choice you make. You can look in the mirror and cry...or you can look in that mirror...and dream another dream."
LEARNING FROM YOUR MISTAKES: "I try to let the past stay where it is and let today speak for itself....Learn from your mistakes but don't be chained to them."
DETERMINATION: "There are always others trying to get to the same goal you are, only they decide to stop halfway down the road. And when they walk away, they leave the road paved for you."
MARRIAGE: "Let every day be like the first day you fell in love. It's about trying to put your best self forward, not just to others but to the one you've pledged your life to."
CHILDREN: "I believe how you teach your kids life's lessons is as important as what you teach them. You've got to love kids into another gear."

Short book that has a lot to offer!.......2003-06-25
GEORGE FOREMAN'S GUIDE TO LIFE by George Foreman
with Linda Kulman is a short book (124 pages) that surprised me in
all that it had to offer.
I wasn't expected much from it, given that Foreman on the surface
wouldn't seem to be the ideal role model to write a self-help book . . . he
was a bully, of sorts, when a kid . . . he didn't read his first
whole book until the age of 16 . . . and he was married and
divorced four times, only to find his fifth time to be the charm.
Furthermore, after he lost the heavyweight title for the first time,
he became a recluse of sorts . . . he also had a reputation for
being surly and mean-tempered, as unlikely as it now seems
when you see him pitching products on TV or doing boxing
commentary on HBO.
But Foreman has really turned his life around, and he shows you
how you can do the same . . . though much of the advice is basic,
and you may have heard it before, his effective use of examples
helps to drive many of his key points home . . . as he notes in
the Introduction, "Everyone in life goes through a hard time
sometime, but you can't let that define who you are. What defines
you is how you come back from those troubles and what you find
in life to smile about."
There were several other memorable passages; among them:
With life there is pain and still more pain, but even with it all,
there is always a reason to smile: a beat of music to make you
lift your feet and dance; a piece of chocolate to sweeten up
a moment. With death, as far as we know, there is no pain,
only silence.
The point is I could forgive a horse for biting me, another for
almost killing me. But it seems that people can rub us the
wrong way and we're through with them overnight. We can
forgive an animal and hold on to a grudge for years against
another person.
People only want to hear the best about their children. That's
because every mom and dad feels their child is an extension
of themselves. So pointing out their kid's shortcomings-whether
they're physical, emotional, or behavioral-hurts because it
feels like it's a reflection on them and their success as a parent.
As soon as you say something's wrong with that boy or girl, their
mother or father starts a conversation inside their head that goes
something like, "If only I were better at this or if only I had done
that, my child wouldn't have this problem." It doesn't really matter
what you say or that you meant well; what they hear is, "What's
the matter with you? Couldn't you have done a better job?"
George Foreman's Guide to Life: How to Get Up Off the Canvas.......2003-03-22
I enjoyed reading this book. Down to earth advice on being positive and believing in yourself.
A PRIME CUT.......2003-01-18
I have always thought of George Foreman as the perfect guy to have over and grill up a few steaks with. I can only imagine what extraordinary dinner conversation we would have if I was ever that lucky. George has incredible wisdom that he conveys in a friendly and down-to-earth style. His stories are as wonderfully told as they are meaningful. This book absolutely knocked me out. So please, George, come on over anytime. . . and bring some burgers!
He talks it like he walks it.......2003-01-13
George has never been afraid to change and adapt. He may have lost some fights and had some disappointments, like us all, but he has maintained a sense of humor and a clear sense of self.
