Book Description
Parents will do almost anything to get their kids to eat healthier, but unfortunately, they've found that begging, pleading, threatening, and bribing don't work. With their patience wearing thin, parents will "give in" for the sake of family peace, and reach for "kiddie" favorites--often nutritionally inferior choices such as fried fish sticks, mac n' cheese, Pop-sicles, and cookies.
Missy Chase Lapine, former publisher of Eating Well magazine, faced the same challenges with her two young daughters, and she sought a solution. Now in The Sneaky Chef, Lapine presents over 75 recipes that ingeniously disguise the most important superfoods inside kids' favorite meals. With the addition of a few simple make-ahead purees or clever replacements, (some may surprise you!) parents can pack more fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants in their kids' foods. Examples of "Sneaky" recipes include:
-No Harm Chicken Parm
-Power Pizza
-Incognito Burritos
-Guerilla Grilled Cheese
-Brainy Brownies
-Health-by-Chocolate Cookies
-Quick fixes for Jell-O(R)
It's a book chock-full of strategies that will help any parent incorporate better health for the whole family.

Brilliant and workable.......2007-10-21
After reading about both Sneaky Chef and Deceptively Delicious, I went to the bookstore to peruse. Because of Oprah, DD wasn't even available, so I took a chance on Sneaky Chef. Now, my kids do eat on occasion peas and broccoli, but I wanted to be able to boost everything they eat, as there are basically no other veggies they eat. I loved the idea of the different colored purees with more than one component (for instance, the orange puree is sweet potatoes and carrots). I loved that the book gives you the option of making recipes from scratch or doing the "quick and dirty" (such as adding purees to Mac n' cheese from the box). I spent two hours today making purple, white, and orange puree and here's what happened. The kids had spaghetti and ate it all (the sauce was half bottled grocery marinara, half orange puree). Then I made the chocolate cupcakes. I attempted the white icing recipe but it was so gluey that I just did powdered sugar on top with a few sprinkles. My 6 year old son is on his second cupcake, my daughter was too full from spaghetti to finish hers, and I'm on my third. Heck I might eat the whole batch after they go to sleep. They are hardly distinguishable from store cupcake mix except for two things--no weird chemical taste, and there is a little bit more chewiness at the end of each bite (the wheat germ). For the first time ever, my kids had some spinach, blueberries, sweet potatoes, carrots, and a significant amount of wheat germ at dinner and dessert.
I only gave 4/5 stars because I agree with another review that said it would be better if the book was spiral bound (I hate fighting a book trying to close while I'm cooking) and the recipes are hard to find in the index ("Choc-ful cupcakes" instead of just "cupcakes".) Also, the icing was a no go.
All in all, this will likely change the way I cook for and with my kids (they are totally aware I'm doing this--so I'm not actually being that sneaky).
good for adults.......2007-10-21
My boyfriend will not touch vegetables. He even picks chopped basil off of pizza - it is ridiculous. But I love adding veggies when I cook and hadn't figured out a way to make him eat them until now - haha!
The Sneaky Chef.......2007-10-20
I think this is a great book with loads of helpful information. A must have for picky eaters.
Easy, practical, delicious.......2007-10-20
I own both this book and Jessica Seinfeld's similar "Deceptively Delicious". To me, "The Sneaky Chef" is far better, more practical, and more informative. The author uses a chart to show the various purees to put in foods, with different columns having substitutes for time constraints. (Go ahead and shop for organic cauliflower and steam and puree it if you can, but if it's spur of the moment, substitute baby food zucchini.)
Seinfeld's book is more like a vanity project by a vapid sanctimommy. This one, by contrast, is an informative book by a chef. I'm glad I have both for comparison purposes, but I only use one -- The Sneaky Chef.
Great cookbook for EVERYONE!.......2007-10-19
I bought the Sneaky Chef after purchasing Jessica Seinfeld's book. I wrote a rather long review of Jessica's book, so now it is Missy Lapine's turn. It is hard to compare the two of them, believe it or not, as the two books are laid out and set up differently. One big difference is Missy's book is set up where you see all recipes in order of the purees, so you can look up Orange Puree or Purple Puree and see what you can make. It is also laid out in terms of meals: Breakfast, Lucnh, Dinner, and Snacks. There are more photos in Jessica's book than Missy's if photos are important to you.
WHY ONLY FOURS STARS? For two reasons: The binding of the book is not in a spiral fashion. I have a thing about cookbooks being able to lay flat on the counter. An odd thing, I know, but to me it matters a lot. The other reason is her recipes have cute names like "Maxed out Meatloaf" or "Gotta Lotta Lasagna" - in other words they are not in alphabetical order. Again, some may quibble but I like my lasagana to be listed under the letter "L." Want to make a burrito? Look under the letter "I": Incognito Burrito.
Jessica Seinfeld's book has purees that are one ingredient: Sweet potato, borcolli, etc......in Missy's book the purees are two ingredients. The juices you can add to recipes are one ingredient. My advice: Look at both books, compare and see which one you prefer. I prefer Jessica's book because the recipes are a bit simpler and again, I like the binding on Jessica's book. Both books offer up a lot of nutritional advice for making everyday foods a bit more healthy, namely boxed macaroni and cheese, pizza bagels and Spaghettio's. As I said in my review of Jessica's book, wouldn't it be wonderful if all of us ate five servings of fruits and vegetables a day? Let alone kids? I like adding purees to my own foods to get more fiber in my diet, along with flaxseed for better health.
MAKING THE PUREE: Don't be intimidated, it is not that hard. I used a Vita-Mix as my food processor and a rice cooker to steam the veggies (don't boil them to a pulp, just steam them.) Even if you don't have these items, you can always start with the sweet potato. You can bake it, clean it out and whip up a puree with some water and a fork and there you go. Another thing: some folks have complained about using so many small plastic bags. I used very small serving Gladware containers so you have a single serving to pull out of the freezer. What else happened to me was I used the small plastic baggies, but they were a little wet when I put them in the freezer. Then they froze together. Ooops! I really believe both books have a lot of merit but people are unfairly picking on Jessica because of her personal life. That is not fair to eother cookbook author as it takes away from the real issue: getting all folks (little and big) to eat better, get more minerals and more fiber. As I also said in my other review per lying to our kids....big deal. My kids see the puree, they see me add it and they do not care. I only wish I had done more of this when they were younger so they could have reaped the benefits at even younger age.
Book Description
In one of the most anticipated books of the year, Lee Woodruff, along with her husband, Bob Woodruff, share their never-before-told story of romance, resilience, and survival following the tragedy that transformed their lives and gripped a nation.
In January 2006, the Woodruffs seemed to have it all–a happy marriage and four beautiful children. Lee was a public relations executive and Bob had just been named co-anchor of ABC’s World News Tonight. Then, while Bob was embedded with the military in Iraq, an improvised explosive device went off near the tank he was riding in. He and his cameraman, Doug Vogt, were hit, and Bob suffered a traumatic brain injury that nearly killed him.
In an Instant is the frank and compelling account of how Bob and Lee’s lives came together, were blown apart, and then were miraculously put together again–and how they persevered, with grit but also with humor, through intense trauma and fear. Here are Lee’s heartfelt memories of their courtship, their travels as Bob left a law practice behind and pursued his news career and Lee her freelance business, the glorious births of her children and the challenges of motherhood.
Bob in turn recalls the moment he caught the journalism “bug” while covering Tiananmen Square for CBS News, his love of overseas assignments and his guilt about long separations from his family, and his pride at attaining the brass ring of television news–being chosen to fill the seat of the late Peter Jennings.
And, for the first time, the Woodruffs reveal the agonizing details of Bob’s terrible injuries and his remarkable recovery. We learn that Bob’s return home was not an end to the journey but the first step into a future they have learned not to fear but to be grateful for.
In an Instant is much more than the dual memoir of love and courage. It is an important, wise, and inspiring guide to coping with tragedy–and an extraordinary drama of marriage, family, war, and nation.
A percentage of the proceeds from this book will be donated to the Bob Woodruff Family Fund for Traumatic Brain Injury.

TOTALLY ENJOYED THE CD OF THIS BOOK. A HEARTFELT STORY OF LOVE, PAIN AND RECOVERY.
Up from the trenches.......2007-09-29
This is a story of remarkable courage and love. Medicine and therapy have come a long way, but the personal strength of one person doing the hard work, and another staying by their side, is (I believe) what brings people back to a life worth living after so tremendous a trajedy. Other books about brain trauma: The Shiloh Renewal and I'll Carry the Fork! Recovering a Life After Brain Injury
One of the best books I've ever read!.......2007-09-26
What a wonderful & informative book. I really enjoyed all of the background information. It was a very touching love story. Having gone through 3 brain surgeries myself and my daughter's brain surgery also, gave me a fraction of knowledge on the recovering brain, but the book certainly gives an abundance of information. I've always thought Bob was absolutely fantastic, but I really enjoyed Lee's side of the story. Bravo and Good bless you both Bob & Lee!!!
Interesting book.......2007-09-09
Interesting book - I read it because I was curious what had happened to Bob Woodruff after his injury, because the of the lack of information regarding his condition. It is interesting to me that insiders in the media can control what information gets out about them personally; however others are not so fortunate - their names, faces and not-so-flattering images are splashed across news screens every day.
The book was interesting, but I felt that Lee Woodruff ends up protraying herself as a selfish wife who is annoyed first at her husband's career and then annoyed at the inconvenience his injury caused their family. She describes herself several times as a "single parent" because Bob travelled so much. As a real-life single parent, this completely offended me. A single parent not only cares for their children alone, they also support them alone. A single parent is not a wife of a guy with a six-figure salary who happens to work a lot. If Lee had left these comments out, the book would have been much more palatable.

This book was excellent. I thoughthly enjoyed it. My sister is not reading it.
Book Description
For the 70 percent of couples who have been affected by extramarital affairs, this is the only book to offer proven strategies for surviving the crisis and rebuilding the relationship –– written by a nationally known therapist considered an expert on infidelity.
When I was 15, I was raped. That was nothing compared to your affair. The rapist was a stranger; you, I thought, were my best friend.
There is nothing quite like the pain and shock caused when a partner has been unfaithful. The hurt partner often experiences a profound loss of self–respect and falls into a depression that can last for years. For the relationship, infidelity is often a death blow.
After the Affair is the first book to help readers survive this crisis. Written by a clinical psychologist who has been treating distressed couples for 22 years, it guides both hurt and unfaithful partners through the three stages of healing: Normalizing feelings, deciding whether to recommit and revitalizing the relationship. It provides proven, practical advice to help the couple change their behavior toward each other, cultivate trust and forgiveness and build a healthier, more conscious intimate partnership.

After The Affair.......2007-09-26
My son-in-law absolutely loved the book. Hasn't stopped talking about how it helped him deal with various issues.
From the HURT party.......2007-09-06
This book was very painful to read as the "hurt" party. It makes you revisit very painful experiences and feelings, which I had dealt with already. The unfaithful party would rate it 5.
Saved my sanity and hopefully my marriage.......2007-07-20
I felt so lost and out of control, I didn't know where to turn - so immediately searched for a book on the subject of infidelity. I was at first hesitant after reading a review claiming the author places blame for the affair on the betrayed spouse -BUT - After reading this book as a betrayed spouse, I believe this is NOT the case.
What she DOES do is address both the wayward spouse and the betrayed spouse equally when taking an honest and often hard look at the relationship before the Affair took place - where there was breakdown in the marriage that may have lead up to the affair. She does clearly state that the wayward spouse IS responsible for their actions and the affair - after all, no one can FORCE someone to CHEAT.
But thankfully, this books delves far beyond finger pointing, and looks for a way to bring partners back toward one another, by dealing with issues in the marriage rather than sweeping them under the carpet. It does this in a supportive, non-judgmental way, that both sides can feel comfortable pursuing. And she gives us simple yet important exercises to do, and action plans to follow, to help us get there. It's a book to be devoured in one sitting, and then read and reread countless times as needed through the different stages of grieving and healing. This book is a true marriage saver - at least, it is for us, and I hope it can be for you, too.
Let me put it as simply as I can:
I (Betrayed Wife) couldn't put this book down, I was so thirsty for understanding - and cried tears of relief when I felt validated in both my feelings and reactions surrounding the discovery of the infidelity.
My husband (Wayward Husband) skimmed through the book with great interest, then went straight to the closest bookstore and bought his own copy. We both now are in our second readings, all the while making lots of notes in the margins, and doing the simple exercises that pop up from time to time. It has helped us to each understand what the other spouse is going through and may be thinking, and has helped us find a way to relate to one another productively.
We have come a long way in two short weeks, and although I know we still have a long way to go, I don't think we would have made it this far (and remained best friends, as we are) without the help in this book.
In fact, the end chapters on Forgiveness are so good, we've also purchased 'How Can I Forgive You' by the same author, to delve even deeper into the moving forward stage of healing and forgiving.
I would recommend these books immediately to any woman I love - and to any couple or man I care deeply about, too - if they found themselves facing infidelity.
For anyone out there hurting this much right now, I feel your pain, confusion and shock - and want you to know you aren't alone. Get this book and you'll see what I mean - you won't be sorry you did.
Excellent Resource for Surviving and Growing after Infidelity.......2007-05-23
After the Affair is a comprehensive and insightful manual that has provided extraordinary help in my life and Im sure will help millions. It helped me to get through the crisis and shock after finding out that my partner was having an affair. It explained the "normal" feelings and helped me to gain insight into what i was going through. After an affair there are of course choices you have. You can stay with your partner and make a committment to working on the relationship or you can move on to the new adventure that awaits you. This time in your life can be truly transformative. This book offers practical information on rebuilding trust if you choose that path. Personally I got a lot out of the book but I chose to move on with my life. The answer lies within your heart. You just need to listen closely. Highly recommended reading for anyone dealing with this challenging situation.
Not my favorite.......2007-05-13
I was not impressed by the advice in this book.I think no two affairs are the same, neither are all waywards or all betrayed spouses. Her approach seemed to be very one size fits all.Maybe it will help some people but it doesn't help all.The old adage of bad marriage=affair needs to be looked at again.Sometimes there are seriously messed up people that have affairs and fixing the 'broken marriage' will NOT fix them.
Book Description
What if conflicts at home, conflicts at work, and conflicts in the world stem from the same root cause? And what if individually and collectively we systematically misunderstand that cause, and unwittingly perpetuate the very problems we think we are trying to solve?
Through an intriguing story of parents struggling with their troubled children and with their own personal problems, The Anatomy of Peace shows how to get past the preconceived ideas and self-justifying reactions that keep us from seeing the world clearly and dealing with it effectively. Yusuf al-Falah, an Arab, and Avi Rozen, a Jew, each lost his father at the hands of the other's ethnic cousins. As the story unfolds, we discover how they came together, how they help warring parents and children to come together, and how we too can find our way out of the struggles that weigh us down. The choice between peace and war lies within us. As one of the characters says, "A solution to the inner war solves the outer war as well." This book offers more than hope — it shows how we can prevent the conflicts that cause so much pain in our lives and in the world.

Could be The Answer.......2007-10-10
This is a great book for anyone looking for answers to difficult relationship situations. You can only change yourself and the way you think but that can make all the difference.
Enlightening.......2007-10-10
This book is particularly enlightening. The basic premises of the book have changed the way I look at people. These include family, neighbors, and the guy in the car next to me on the freeway. I have found myself more patient with others, kinder in my responses to others, and enjoying the benefits that come when the other people are treated with consideration.
Enlightning.......2007-09-15
This is a wonderful book that takes you on a journey of self discovery. It is a must for anyone that really wants to understand why they have problems in any relationship and how to change them for the better. The book is well worth the price, and time to read it. If the things you read are implemented it will change your life!
Jonesy.......2007-09-12
Many books are described as life changing. This is that rare one that is truly life changing. Having read Terry Warner's book, Bonds That Heal, I had some background in the philosophy and was already impressed with the profound changes that were possible if an individual, or company or nation, was committed to living these concepts and making them a part of the fabric of their life.
That said, as I spoke to others about Bonds That Heal it become apparent that some individuals were intimadated by the depth of thought required to read and understand Mr. Warner's work. Anatomy of Peace is written in parable form that makes it an easy read. Although the story is simple it engages the readers' emotions and sympathy and opens their heart and mind to change.
I am glad to have found both of these books and recommend them to anyone who is ready for a better life.
Finding Inner Peace.......2007-08-23
This book can be life changing in giving a person effective tools for dealing with relational conflict. It will be revolutionary for many. I have shared it with many friends.

There's a popular game at baby showers in which the new mom-to-be has to taste jarred baby food and guess its contents. Inevitably, the first comment is "Yuk! How do they eat this stuff?" The answer, of course, is that babies don't know there's an alternative--fresh, delicious, wholesome food made at home. In the beautifully and extensively illustrated First Meals, Annabel Karmel explains how simple and satisfying it is to make baby's food yourself--from the earliest mashed banana and steamed carrot purees to Singapore Noodles for 3- to 5-year-olds.
Karmel begins with an extensive section on early nutrition, pointing out that while grownups are often encouraged to follow a high-fiber, low-fat diet, "the under 5s need significantly more fat and concentrated sources of calories and nutrients to fuel their rapid growth during the early years." Continuing her "Basics" chapter are sections on keeping a well-stocked pantry; the equipment you'll need; illustrated, step-by-step instructions on preparing your first purees; and notes on freezing and reheating food. Close-up views of spoonfuls of puree are especially helpful for nervous first-time chefs. Chapters of recipes and feeding information are then broken down by age--4-6 months, 6-9 months, 9-12 months, 12-18 months, 18 months-2 years, 2-3 years, and 3-5 years, with each chapter addressing the particularities of the given age (questions about starting solids are answered for parents of 4-6-month-olds, while maintaining a healthy and varied diet and packing lunches are the concerns for the preschool child), along with 20 or more recipes appropriate to the child's level.
First published in England, the book has been "translated" well--ingredients are measured both in cups and in grams, and while there might be more parsnips called for than one normally sees in a North American diet, nearly every ingredient is obtainable at your regular supermarket. Karmel is up-to-date on the most recently accepted food recommendations as of 1999--she advises families with food allergies to avoid peanuts until a child is 3 years old, and while she cooks with cow's milk after 9 months, she doesn't recommend offering it in a cup until baby has reached his first birthday. Most importantly, she preaches a gospel of variety and of fun at mealtime. Cheesy Pasta Stars are made with tiny "stelline" pasta, and homemade Chicken Nuggets (made with grated apple and parsley in the breading) are formed in the shape of hearts--enough to break down the barriers of any picky eater. Stuffed Baked Potatoes become sailboats with cheese triangle sails and red pepper flags, and "Mock Fried Egg" looks just like the real thing--except it's vanilla yogurt with half an apricot on top! So trust your taste buds and leave those jars at the store--Annabel Karmel's First Meals will inspire you in the kitchen and leave your kids pounding the table for more. --Rebecca A. Staffel

Great ideas, but tons of work.......2007-10-18
I was excited to get this book, fearing that because of hectic schedules, we were relying on too many pre-processed foods for my 1 1/2 year old son. This book was a great idea source, it helped me to realize all the possibilities I had in feeding him and that there were things he was old enough to try that I hadn't thought of. I have so far tried three of the recipes though, and I have to say, they aren't for people who don't want to spend the better part of their days in the kitchen. The prep times and cooking times, I found way off. I spent about 2 hours and 45 minutes on a dish that claimed to take 35 minutes total, and I'm no novice cook, I swear. They are absurdly time consuming. My son liked 2 out of 3 that I've tried, and my husband loved them too, they are great recipes. Besides the amount of time and effort these recipes call for, I'm also not thrilled with the fact that the majority of these call for frying. I thought we were all pretty clear that frying wasn't healthy? But it does taste good and I guess that the overload of veggies is making up for it? Anyway I recommend it with the warning that most of these are not fast and easy. But they are loaded with all kinds of healthy foods that I wouldn't have otherwise introduced to him. So overall it's a great guide, even if I'll be modifying the recipes from now on to cut out time and maybe the frying part.
bvaughan@libero.it.......2007-10-05
I bought this book for my daughter when she was pregnant. She had been thinking of getting a different book, but decided this one was probably even better. She used it extensively when my granddaughter was first beginning to try solid foods, and continued to use it through about 9 months. At that point, the baby was eating nearly everything her parents ate, and there was no need to tempt her into eating vegetables.
I also used the book to make baby food when I was visiting my daughter. I made things in large quantities and froze small portions in ice cube trays. The next day, I would put the "cubes" in a plastic freezer bag and start over with a different food. That way my daughter had plenty of meals ready to use when I went home.
I didn't find the recipes too complicated or lengthy. Sometimes I modified ingredients or simplified a procedure. You don't really need a book to cook carrots in the microwave; this book combines ingredients to make tasty and healthy meals. The results were good enough to eat up myself if the baby turned up her nose at them.
There were a few things that had ingredients that my daughter's pediatrician thought were not age-appropriate. When in doubt, the pediatrician wins.
for the budding family nutritionist.......2007-09-28
With my newborn, I was determined and felt responsible to become the informed nutritionist for our family. This book helped me understand the benefits of ingredient combinations in recipes and meal planning. I now have a greater understanding of how to maximize vitamin and mineral absorption. With that said, this book can be very intimidating if you are a busy mom with only minutes to get hungry mouths fed. Treat the "art" of the recipes as something to do if you have time to spare. Focus instead on the recipe content and being creative with combinations. Also, being a "Dr. Sears" disciple, I necessarily needed to defer certain recipes to a later time due to the recipe containing ingredients not recommended for that age range by Dr Sears. This meant certain recipes recommended by Karmel for 6-9 mos, for example, needed to be deferred to 12 mos. I found myself spending 10-15 min per recipe cross-referencing ingredients for a particular recipe I wanted to make with what was recommended by Dr. Sears to ensure it would be appropriate for our little one. All in all, I recommend this book for the wealth of nutritional information and recipes provided.
Good information.......2007-09-14
I received this book as a gift when my first child was born. It has some really great information. I feel I have saved money and my children have had healthier food to eat. I recently purchased this for my brother for their first child. I love the tip about freezing the baby food in ice cube trays. My children love the homemade baby food more then the store purchased food. The only thing that this food does not do is travel well on trips. Then I go back to store purchased food; much to my children's disgust.
Author is British!.......2007-08-30
I haven't read this particular book, but I have a similar one by the same author purchased in the UK. The author is British and guidelines as to when to introduce foods vary from those set here in the USA. This may help to explain why Annabel's advice differs from professionals' here. I usually live in the UK and some of her advice is in conflict with the health visitors' amd doctors there as well. Anyone who has many children know that they change these guidelines quite regularly. Even a couple of years ago, they told us to feed babies cereal from 4 months old, now it is 6 months. They used to say not to give kids cheese until 8 years old. My doctor told me to feed my 8 month old son at 5 months because he was really, really ready. I didn't feed him nuts, dairy, soy, etc. Just rice! Speaking of which these recipes call for some milk, but it is cooked. I am sure most of you are using formula made of dairy(I am still breastfeeding), so I am not sure what the problem is with that??
What I do like about her cooking is that she does encourage people to introduce real food to kids instead of frozen pizza, frozen chicken nuggets, takeaways or the equally revolting (but not unhealthy)baby food in jars. It is also so much cheaper to take some of your own dinner and mash it up for yuor baby rather than buying jars of food. I use jars for traveling, when I know I can't heat up my frozen purees.

Great Cookbook.......2007-08-31
Bought this books some time ago and haven't used it all that much. Just opened it up again and made the Chocolate Amaretto Cheesecake and it is amazing. I passed over it because it is made with ricotta cheese and I just couldn't believe it could turn out that great. Just 99 calories for 1/l2 slice. I topped it with whipped cream.
Also try the Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, they are a favorite recipe. I added some nuts and just a tablespoon of chocolate chips. Just those two recipes are well worth the price of the book.
Chicken Marsala and Clam Linguini are favorite recipes as well.
Great for picky eaters!.......2007-07-24
I am a very picky eater,so I usually struggle with cookbooks having recipes I like. This book is great - I just started weight watchers and was very pleased to see this cookbook has not only good basic recipes but also easy to make. It ranges from appetizers and snacks to desserts and everything in between. The recipes are created by real people making their own recipes weight watcher friendly. Very good purchase.
Excellent Cookbook!.......2007-07-08
This is the first WW cookbook I ever purchased, so I wasn't sure what to expect. This one has become the gold standard in my kitchen right off the bat. My previous cookbooks were full of delicious, but not exactly healthy, recipes. This cookbook is full of recipes that not only taste terrific, but are healthy and enjoyable for the whole family.
Some of our favorites so far are these (and I might be paraphrasing the actual name of the recipe and I am going from memory here): Lemon-Tarragon Grilled Chicken, Grilled Herb Turkey Burgers and Turkey Tortilla Casserole. There are several others that we have tried and enjoyed as well. AND, there are dozens (literally) more that I have dog-eared and am anxious to try. Nothing I've tried has been a flop or even a disappointment in the slightest. I'm very pleased with this cookbook. I'd recommend it without reservation.

great book.......2007-05-14
used. a little damage on the spine. Did some tape repairs. Haven't had the opportunity to try the recipes but reading through it, it seems fairly simple and easy to use if you are on the points system.
Not so impressed.......2007-05-10
The cookbook is not very picture friendly. Most of the recipes are not what I expected. I wanted a healthy family cookbook while still being conscious of what we are eating each night. This appeared to be something that might fit the bill, but when I received it I was not impressed. Still looking for a cookbook that is just basic family recipes without weird ingredients that the entire family can enjoy including my children.

Book Description
Practical advice and information from the world's foremost experts on autism -- and a mother's own hard-won lessons from helping her son recover from the disorder
When Karen Siff Exkorn's son, Jake, was diagnosed with autism, she struggled to pull together comprehensive information about the disorder. Fortunately, she was able to educate herself quickly, and her extensive at-home treatment of her son led to his amazing full recovery. But the journey wasn't easy, and now, in The Autism Sourcebook, Siff Exkorn offers parents the wisdom she wishes she'd had at the beginning.
Recent studies show that there is a worldwide epidemic of autism. More than 1.5 million people are affected in the United States alone, with one in every 166 children diagnosed. Early detection and early intervention are two of the key factors in improving prognosis -- but too often, writes Siff Exkorn, parents get bogged down in denial or confusion about the still mysterious disorder, and are unable to take the necessary steps. Providing accessible medical information gleaned from the world's foremost experts, Siff Exkorn offers an inside look at families with children who have autism, and ties in her own firsthand experience as a parent. The author shares valuable knowledge about the following:
- What the diagnosis really means
- Understanding and accessing treatment options
- Knowing your child's rights in the school system
- Coping with common marital and familial stress
- Making the stigma of autism a thing of the past
With extensive appendices, including the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Diagnostic Criteria for the Five Pervasive Developmental Disorders, and carefully selected lists of Internet resources, recommended readings, and top autism organizations worldwide, The Autism Sourcebook is the single most comprehensive, practical resource available to parents and loved ones of children with autism.

No good biomedical help here.......2007-07-03
So many ASD kids are sick with bowel disease and live in terrible pain. This book only covers the bare minimum of ASD issues and deals effectively only with ABA treatment. Sadly, it takes far more to recover many children than ABA. Ms. Siff-Exhorn's book oversimplifies the very complex causes and medical problems that all too often go untreated or are simply viewed as behavioral.
Okay if you're just finding out about autism.......2006-12-10
But most of the information found in this book is easily found on the internet. I was hoping this book would help us find school/treatment for our 2 year old austistic son, but it was much different that I expected. Most of the material that was written was information about autism that I was already very well aware of.
Disappointed. :o(
Excellent Sourcebook.......2006-07-19
This is an excellent book if you're looking for something like an Autism encyclopedia. This isn't really one of those books that gets into too much personal detail about experiences with Autism, it's more of a guidebook and a reference manual for parents or ABA therapists. It has a plethora of information from diagnosis to dietary intervention. It covers all the bases and leaves you with plenty of hope for your child. Definitely a worthy buy for parents, teachers, or anyone else interested in learning more about Autism and how to intervene.
A Good Start for Newly Diagnosed.......2006-03-09
I wish this book had been around five years ago when my son was diagnosed. This is a great start, but ONLY a start. I feel there needs to be much more on sensory integration. My son is also PDD and ABA did nothing for his flapping and spinning. Newly diagnosed parents must remember that Autism isn't curable but treatable. With therapies, diet, and a good special ed teacher their child can live in our world very well. My son is now eight and looks, acts, talks like a typical boy. Certain social still cause stimming and behavior problems but all in all he's doing excellent. Again, this book is a great start.
Don't bother -- Save your money.......2006-01-03
Save your money ... this book is misleading, nothing new, and for anyone to claim that they have written a book that is "everything you need to know" about helping your child with Autism is, in itself, ludicrous.
Apparently "everything you need to know" is just using ABA therapy.
The Author, Karen Siff Exhorn, claims that her child is "completely recovered from Autism" (his actual diagnosis was PDD) but then the author also says that her son still needs a 1:1 ABA therapist to "support him" on playdates. The child is in 4th grade. That is hardly what I would consider to be "recovered".
What this author appears to consider "recovered" is her son's ability to speak, to be compliant, and to not "look autistic" ... meaning, she focused on ABA "training" to get her kid to not flap or shriek and to "look normal". "Looking normal" was the most important thing to her, it seems. So her kid sounds as if he can appear normal, which is great, but her son still doesn't know how to relate to kids, converse with them, or play ...
Half a page on Sensory Integration and a quarter of a page on Integrated Play Therapy can hardly be considered "everything you need to know".
We all have 1000 times more computing power at our fingertips right now than NASA used to get a man on the moon ... yet few of us make very good use of it.
It would be great if there were one book that would tell us everything we needed to know, but since every case of Autism is different, that is not possible. Forget this book and just search the web.

Great Food and Still Losing Weight!.......2007-05-22
This cook book is wonderful! Recipes are easy and taste really good. Friends have said "I thought you were on a diet" after eating a holiday or special occasion meal with us. I tell them I am still ona diet and have this wonderful cookbook with meal ideas and recipes that makes a person think otherwise!
South Beach Diet over Christmas.......2007-04-01
If you've found it hard to keep to a diet plan during Christmas or Thanksgiving, this book will solve your problems. Easy and delicious recipes based on the South Beach diet.
Great Ideas for Holidays and Gatherings!.......2007-03-15
The South Beach Diet may have revolutionized how we eat, but when it comes to entertaining, most of us fall back into old food habits. Now there's a no-brainer way to entertain, with recipes and menus that can satisfy the most skeptical guests. Really a winner, and easy to use.
Something that FINALLY works!.......2007-01-20
As long as you have the determination to "stick with it" and lose weight, this program, and this book, will make getting there a breeze! How tough can it be to stay on a diet, when you're allowed to eat all kinds of delicious, "sinful" foods??? For the first time in my life, I am 2 pounds lighter than before the holidays started; and, I didn't have to give up the joy of eating... I highly recommend this book and the program it represents. Recipes are not difficult and the results are most rewarding. Furthermore, you cannot beat the price at Amazon and the book was in my house, two days after I placed the order...
Best Cookbook I Have Ever Bought!.......2007-01-16
This is the first cookbook I have bought where I can see myself actually trying every recipe in it. Dr. Agatston has broken the book into specific holidays and events (Easter, Thanksgiving, Football parties, showers, etc.), but of course feel free to mix and match recipes based on what your preferred tastes are. The recipes that I have tried so far have been easy and delicious. The best part is at the end of every recipe, he tells you what you can prepare ahead of time, from hours before your event to days before your event. Each recipe is labeled as to which phase of the South Beach Diet it pertains, just as in his other books. This cookbook is too good to save just for holidays and parties. I'm planning on using it year-round for my family's everyday meals.

Book Description
Autism is an epidemic: It has spiked 1,500 percent in the last twenty years. ADHD, asthma and allergies have also skyrocketed over the same time period. One of these conditions now strikes one in every three children in America. But there is hope. Leading medical innovator Kenneth Bock, M.D., has helped change the lives of more than a thousand children, and in this important book, with a comprehensive program that targets all four of the 4-A disorders, he offers help to children everywhere. This is the book that finally puts hope within reach.
Doctors have generally overlooked the connections among the 4-A disorders, despite their concurrent rise and the presence of many medical clues. For years the medical establishment has considered autism medically untreatable and utterly incurable, and has limited ADHD treatment mainly to symptom suppression. Dr. Bock and his colleagues, however, have discovered a solution – one that goes to the root of the problem. They have found that deadly modern toxins, nutritional deficiencies, metabolic imbalances, genetic vulnerabilities and assaults on the immune and gastrointestinal systems trigger most of the symptoms of the 4-A disorders, resulting in frequent misdiagnosis and untold misery.
Dr. Bock’s remarkable Healing Program, drawing on medical research and based on years of clinical success, offers a safe, sensible solution that is individualized to each child to help remedy these root causes. The biomedical approach to autism, ADHD, and the other 4-A epidemics, as innovated by Dr. Bock and some of America’s finest integrative physicians, is one of the most promising and exciting medical movements of our time.
In this eminently readable account, written by Dr. Bock in collaboration with critically acclaimed author Cameron Stauth, you will meet children and parents whose dramatic stories will inspire you to change the life of your own child. This program may be the help that you have been praying for.

Real tools to improve life.......2007-09-26
With the library book still sitting on my desk I am purchasing a copy of my own. While I have always been thankful (and blissfully ignorant) that MY kids haven't needed all those restricted diets or been negatively impacted by vaccinations, this book has helped open my eyes and really look at the health of my family. I am thankful to find an abundant source of information that is geared towards HEALING the ROOT CAUSES of illnesses in our children. Pediatric medicine is filled with caring doctors who help treat symptom after symptom, infection after infection as seperate pieces of a complete body. This book details complicated approaches to treat an entire child, not just medical conditions that have become alarmingly common and acceptable.
I would have paid $1,000 for this book! All of our children are in grave danger, and we MUST protect them! Everyone read this!!!.......2007-09-16
Would you pay $17 to save your child from a life of chronic illness?? Of course you would! I am a well educated person in the medical field, and this book blew me away! I thought that the vaccination controversy was just parents finding something to blame for their sick kids, because physicans assure that they are safe. Well, guess what?? The government drastically changed the vaccination schedule in 1991, and the way that they administer them now, is harming our children! 2 studies of populations that do not vaccinate, had NO cases of autism!! Autism in our country has increased by 6,000%, and it is not the type that you are born with-that is still EXTREMELY rare! There is an epidemic of illnesses that are negatively affecting our children, and this book addresses all of them, as well as how to heal them! Our children's immune systems are being viciously attacked by a combination of toxins, and they are being severely injured. This book does a fabulous job of covering each in detail, from the negative impact of vaccines (our children were administered huge amounts of toxins); the epidemic of food allergies, which causes everything from ADHD, to learning and behavioral problems; the toxins in our food: from the antibiotics and hormones that are in our meat supply, to the pesticides and chemicals that are in everything else; and the toxins in our water and air. The reason that you don't hear about these things, is that our medical system and government are run by big business. There is money to be lost by natural therapies, and eating pure foods, because there is no pill to prescribe! There is a huge coverup in play, and we MUST educate ourselves and be our own advocates! Even if your child, (or yourself for that matter) are currently healthy, chances are, you won't be for long!! Your child can be a totally "normal" two year old, and then lose speech, mobility, and social interaction skills and become a shell of what they once were! ADHD and Asthma are increased by 400%! If you are a parent, or even know people with children, you need to read this book! If we don't do something drastic now, we are going to have an entire society with chronic illnesses, and our country will be severely affected! We need to be armed with knowledge and band together to fight the system, and protect all of us! I implore you to read this book, and tell everyone that you know- you will not be sorry!!
Wonderful, coherent book.......2007-08-25
I love this book. Dr. Bock discusses treatments for autism and intermingles it with personal stories of past patients. Then the second half of the book, he lists out the supplements, what they do and what to give them for. He gives case studies. This is one of those books that is always out on my desk, because I am constantly referencing it. I have gotten plenty of good advice from the book that has not only benefitted my autistic child, but also the general health of my other two children. In addition to this book, I recommend "Children With Starving Brains".
Dr. Bock is a miracle worker!.......2007-06-12
My 3 year old son was diagnosed with autism at 20 months and has been Dr. Bock's patient for 1 1/2 years. His book is a miracle for all parents with children on the autism spectrum or related diagnoses. His treatment is simple yet extraordinary in bringing about changes and recovery in children. My son was mute, violent, refused to eat or sleep before Dr. Bock's treatment- now, 1 1/2 years later, he's ready to be mainstreamed into preschool. He has performed miracles with my son, simply by recognizing the root causes of my son's condition and treating it simply through diet, supplement therapy and removing metals. He makes no promises, but I can tell you from our experience that he has truly worked miracles for my son and our family!
Book Review.......2007-05-29
Excellent information on Autism, ADHD, Allergies and Asthma. With the current epidemic of these disorders the information presented is timely and very hopeful for those afflicted with these conditions. Utilizing expertise from both the medical and alternative camps, many useful strategies are presented. I highly recommend this book for parents and professionals working with the Four A's.
