5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly thorough.......2007-09-24

The important details of every Book are explained and analyzed, not very much in-depth but deeply enough to give a basic understanding of what's going on, why, and how it might be interpreted. I had read the Odyssey twice in the past (and remembered almost nothing), so this was a great way to refresh my memory without having to read the epic for the third time for a course.

It is not intended to replace reading the actual epic, but it does help make it more accessible to all. Good work.

5 out of 5 stars TURNED "ROCKET SCIENCE" to Reading Ease.......2001-04-08

Homer's The Odyessey is a drudgery to read not to mention understand. This book took the pain and bordom of that and shortned it to a 1 hour (45 if your a fast reader) book that keeps all the details (for your reading pleasure) and explains the importance of each section in relations to High School which actually helps a ton. (pulled my grade on this from the usual B to A thanks to this book).

This is a great way to help you better understand the book. While it does not take the place of the book it is a really good learning tool,

5 out of 5 stars I felt as if I was reading my heart.......2006-11-07

Jerry Cook puts into words my hearts cry!
He reminds me to hope and dream of what the Body of Christ could be.
I love this book so intensely it's looking rather worn.
After reading it over and over myself, I bought copies for my board and staff.
I even preached a sermon series inspired from its pages and encouraged my entire church to purchase and devour it!
If the people of God knew how to really love, accept and forgive, we would truly be Jesus with skin on.

PS...thank you Jerry Cook and Stanley C. Baldwin for letting the Holy Spirit use you to positively change THE church...

5 out of 5 stars The ministry of the Church Jesus gave His life for.......2006-11-04

This book will ignite passion in you and equip you to do the work of the ministry. It's message expresses the heart and mind of our Heavenly Father and His desire and purposes for the church in the earth today. The church should be an active force in the world providing a place for the borken hearted to be healed and the captives to be set free.

4 out of 5 stars An outstanding book for hungry Christians.......2005-07-21

I became familiar with this book back in the late 70's. This book has much to say to Christians who want to be actively and accurately involve in their Church and their faith. Love, Acceptance and Forgiveness lives up to its sub-title very well: Equipping the church to be truly Christian in a non-Christian world.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Christianity.......2004-01-13

I sat down with this book and did not get up till I finished it. That is not amazing due to the few pages there are. The amazing part is how my faith, my worldview and my Chrisitanity was so radically changed by such a small book.

The Bible is the original text while this book if the Cliff Notes in applying the real Christianity.

I now see Jesus in the eyes of the homeless; the prisoner; the "pain in the neck" people and therefore my christian expression has changed.

Do Not read this book if you do not want to change your actions toward people.

5 out of 5 stars Why I keep reading this book.......2002-10-01

Love, Acceptance, and Forgiveness changed the way I view church, ministry, and Christians as a whole. As a result of first reading this book ten years ago, and rereading it every year, I have discovered that people need unconditional love simply because they are humans.
The key concept is simply that people need to be loved and deserved to be loved because they were created in the image of God.
Acceptance should have nothing to do with stature or position, but simply with the fact that we are all humans.
Forgiveness should flow freely without strings attached because we can all receive that same gift.
I would encourage all people to read this book, embrace the concepts, and allow it to change the way you opperate as a person. In the simplest terms, in the most concise way to put it, it will challenge you to examine the way you view humanity.

2 out of 5 stars Just read the real book!.......2007-07-03

First of all, if you're too shiftless to read "The Catcher in the Rye," you should probably quit now. Second of all, The book is awesome! You'd be missing out. I'm sure this is a good summary, but C'mon!

5 out of 5 stars The Catcher in the Rye (Cliffs Notes).......2007-04-11

The CliffsNotes are very helpful in its explanation(s) of the chapters and characters. I especially found the literary summaries helpful.

1 out of 5 stars the reviewer can't read between the lines.......2005-04-03

Here are some subtle questions in "Catcher in the Rye" which are not mentioned in Cliffs Notes:

--Holden flunks oral expression class because he couldn't refrain from digressing. Could that have to with his tendency to digress in this novel?
ƒÞ
--Holden repeatedly wonders where the ducks go when the pond freezes over. Could this be because he wonders where students go when they flunk out of school?

--Two boys ask Holden for directions to the mummy exhibit. Could this have to do with the death motif?

--According to one reviewer, Holden watches Phoebe going around on the merry-go-round because he wants to keep her frozen in childhood.

--On page 141, Holden expresses willingness not to kill but to be killed. On page 188, a teacher delivers a quote which favors living for a great cause over dying for a great cause. How do these two connect?

--Holden repeatedly lies about his age and repeatedly orders alcohol. What is he trying to accomplish?

--Holden criticizes almost everyone but his sister. What would a Transactional Analyst say about his "I'm OK, you're not OK" stance?

--Upon virtually every mishap, Holden makes a generalization. How would this be interepreted in light of "Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy" by David D. Burns?

Under each chapter heading, there is a Summary heading and a Commentary heading. Most of what Kaplan calls Commentary is really more summary.

I had a professor who gave C+'s to students who can only deliver plot summaries. My professor might give Kaplan a C+.

1 out of 5 stars To Catch or not to Catch.......2005-03-03

As a freshman in highschool and an avid reader, it took me no time to aquire a copy of J.D. Salingers "a Catcher in the Rye". It blew my mind. There is no book of which I have turned pages to find a solution that has captured me and found me laughing or various other strong emotions along side that of Holden Caulfield. Then I discovered there were cliffnotes. Cliffnotes for such a timeless classic and not so hard of a read are superflous and only for those who are the laziest and most sad of all ignorant saps. Turn from this road in which you are about to embark and spend your money on a nice-warm copy of Catcher... and then pat yourself on the back.

4 out of 5 stars 4 stars.......2004-10-19

The book, The Catcher in the Rye, written by J.D. Salinger, tells of a series of events over four days of the protagonist's life. Holden Caulfield has numerous flashbacks as he narrates his story to a psychiatrist. The reader sees the main conflict between Holden and his inner self, as he is unable to handle the pressure of being a teenager and the rejection of society. The story is told in first person as Holden talks directly to the reader. This is an important literary device as the character begins to lose his mind as the story goes on. This way the reader knows what Holden is thinking and can see that his thoughts are troubled.
The story takes place in numerous settings beginning with a boarding school in Pennsylvania and ends with Holden wandering New York City. The story starts out in a comical mood as Holden makes various impressions of people he knows and he likes to get laughs from people. Yet, he is a rebel who does not want to conform to what everyone else does, and therefore is left out and isolated from the rest of society. One of the main causes of his depression is the death of his younger brother, Allie.
I would definitely recommend this book if you are looking for great read. The book relates to kids in high school and is a funny, yet emotional book with a likable main character. The only weakness in the story is in-between the climaxes when there is a decline of action as Holden roams the city. The book includes profane language, sex, and violence and therefore is not appropriate for children under the junior high level.

It'll be enough for you to report on the significant parts of the sundae in great detail to Mr. English Teacher, but you'll have none of the feeling of having eaten an ice cream sundae, perhaps the finest food on Earth, if not the finest thing. A multicultural perennial favorite by Robert Lipsyte, The Contender is a moral tale that emphasizes the importance of the fight rather than the prize, the quality of the struggle over the outcome.

Hence, becoming a contender is what Alfred Brooks learns to do as he literally fights young boxers and figuratively braves the inner struggle of peer pressure.

A lush, cautionary tale of a life of vileness and deception or a loving portrait of the aesthetic impulse run rampant? Why not both? After Basil Hallward paints a beautiful, young man's portrait, his subject's frivolous wish that the picture change and he remain the same comes true. Dorian Gray's picture grows aged and corrupt while he continues to appear fresh and innocent. After he kills a young woman, "as surely as if I had cut her little throat with a knife," Dorian Gray is surprised to find no difference in his vision or surroundings. "The roses are not less lovely for all that. The birds sing just as happily in my garden."

As Hallward tries to make sense of his creation, his epigram-happy friend Lord Henry Wotton encourages Dorian in his sensual quest with any number of Wildean paradoxes, including the delightful "When we are happy we are always good, but when we are good we are not always happy." But despite its many languorous pleasures, The Picture of Dorian Gray is an imperfect work. Compared to the two (voyeuristic) older men, Dorian is a bore, and his search for ever new sensations far less fun than the novel's drawing-room discussions. Even more oddly, the moral message of the novel contradicts many of Wilde's supposed aims, not least "no artist has ethical sympathies. An ethical sympathy in an artist is an unpardonable mannerism of style." Nonetheless, the glamour boy gets his just deserts. And Wilde, defending Dorian Gray, had it both ways: "All excess, as well as all renunciation, brings its own punishment."

Dorian Gray has just had his portrait painted. It is a perfect likeness of the quite extraordinary beautiful young man, and it prompts him to make a mad wish for eternal youth. In the years to come, he devotes his public life to and aestheticism-and his private one to decadence and debauchery.

5 out of 5 stars The American Psycho of a bygone era?.......2007-09-26

Having only recently read American Psycho, I couldn't help but think back to The Picture of Dorian Gray. Placed within the context of its time, I feel certain that this book would have been the American Psycho of its day. What a great pity that Oscar Wilde only wrote this one novel! This compelling story has haunted me since I first saw it on film as a young man (the book is better of course). I've given copies of the novel to many friends, and I can heartily recommend it as a great read to anyone.

I would imagine that there is not a very large chance you would find
this book in the waiting room of any plastic surgeon's office. An
example of a story that suggests be careful of what you wish for. A
young man makes a deal to keep himself young and youthful looking.
Unfortunately there is a secret associated with this that is hard to
      hide.

      4 out of 5 stars A Classic Victorian Gothic.......2007-08-29

What can capture the soul of a man?
Is there a devil's deal to be made at the crossroad?
Dorian Gray shows that great physical beauty can be a lie. Oscar Wilde in
his introductory poetry says: Those who find beautiful meanings in beautiful things are cultivated."
One can't say that this novel is beautiful,
but there is an element of eternal truth that even in ugliness has great virtue.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-08-23

This story is amazing, Dorian Gray keeps you in the book.
I read this book in high school and now I decided to buy it and read it again.

3 out of 5 stars Not all that I expected..........2007-07-30

This novel is one which everyone has heard of and many are compelled to read it as part of school curriculum. I never did, but thought I would give it a try as I really enjoy dry British wit and intelligent prose. Beyond that, I wasn't sure what else I was expecting, but for my tastes, I didn't end up entirely satisfied.

The opening 10 or 20 pages insinuated themselves into my imagination and I felt that I would be entertained by the main characters throughout the rest of the novel. The detailed descriptions of the lovely country setting and extravagant flowers gives one an impression of decadence and a high society jadedness that I somehow expected from Oscar Wilde, having read none of his previous work. Unfortunately, the remainder of the novel didn't hold as much pleasure for me.

Dorian Grey is a relatively uninteresting central character who is but a blank canvas for Lord Henry to experiment upon; Dorian's own thoughts and musings are not so compelling in and of themselves and yet we are treated to quite a few pages of them throughout. Lord Henry himself is an interesting character whose mean-spiritedness, which approaches evil in some instances, is obscured by his verbose bantering on half-baked, jaundiced observations on Victorian life. These also consume considerable paper stock, and as witty as his musings start out (his thoughts on marriage were particularly humorous to me), they start to run together and become somewhat of a misshapen lump through which I felt I was slogging at times.

Anyway, the story is relatively well known to most at this point, regardless of whether you have read the book in question or not. It progresses more or less as one might assume, which is not entirely a bad thing (I would not classify this tale as a mystery or as a horror novel, a genre to which I see it is sometimes curiously attributed). Oscar Wilde is definitely saying something here, and there seem to be many elements of allegory contained within the story. I have read that he saw parts of himself within all three of the main characters, and they do seem to represent different facets of a single personality. Unfortunately these same characters are hamstrung by this very fact, as they each seem only part of a personality, part of a character, and not well rounded or believable in their motivations or actions.

This is the first Oscar Wilde I have attempted to read, and I won't say it is my last, but there are classics of English literature which are as well written, more engrossing, and, in the end, more memorable, at least to this reader ("Silas Marner" comes to mind as a fine book I only just recently read for the first time as well).

So, overall, about 3 stars from me. In my opinion it poses some interesting questions, sparkles in a few spots, and held my attention for a few hours, but it's not something I would return to or recommend for pleasurable reading.

As a side note, I am somewhat surprised by the criticisms of the homoerotic nature of the relationships portrayed within the novel. Wilde portrayed the passionate nature of what amounts to a love triangle in a very effective (if slightly florid) way, and, as has been noted before, the relationships between the men seem more genuine and believable than those involving the fairer sex. Maybe this type of undertone would be out of place in a Hemingway novel but good grief it's Oscar Wilde! Scratch beneath the surface and read about where this man was coming from and the times in which he lived and worked.

        Book Description

It started almost 15 years ago. My wife Marj and I had moved to a new community and visited a local church. We arrived for Sunday school, were warmly greeted, and then ushered into a class of seniors. . . . Unfortunately, the assault on our prime-of-life status from every quarter of society has only intensified since then. Waitresses have stopped asking if we qualify for the senior discount; they simply give it to us. When I'm in public, young women step aside for me to enter doors ahead of them. . . . A publisher issued a newly designed version of one of my books that had been in print for 20 years. On the back cover, I was described as one who "remains active in writing and speaking." I wondered why they didn't add that I could still feed myself.Whether you are 50 or 70, you have probably shared some of Stanley C. Baldwin's experiences. Here is an opportunity to relive them with laughter. But, more importantly, in these pages you'll find an opportunity to reflect on how these life changes relate to your Christian life. This is a book for those who reject the grumpiness of aging and embrace the grace of life with Christ.
