Book Description
"We will go to America!"
It is 1868, and Carl Erik's family faces starvation in Sweden. As their hopes fade, they must endure a journey over land and sea to reach a better life in a new country thousands of miles away.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for the Classroom.......2000-08-03
The Long Way to a New Land and The Long Way Westward are companion books that chronicle a family's journey from their Swedish farm, which is suffering from an extended drought, to a new home in Minnesota. The books describe the difficulty and dangers of the journey in a way that is non-complaining and full of optimism for a new life in America. Teachers, these books are wonderful for integrating with other subjects and topics, such as immigration, westward expansion, steamships, trains, geography, and American life in the 1860s.
Book Description
The train of states is rolling by --
rush to the window and watch it go!
The very first car? The very first state:
Delaware, of course,
followed by Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia ...
fifty in all.
The caboose? Washington, D.C.!
Look closely! What do you see?
State birds, state flowers, state trees ...
forty-three presidents! Can you find them all?
Can you spot the flags, heroes, animals, and landmarks
adorning the train of states?
Clickety clack, clickety clack.
Rush out the door, rush to the track.
Where is the train going? Come along!
Over the prairie, over the mountains,
down a green valley, and into a billowing tent.
It's time for a party --
it's time to celebrate
the fifty states!

We would recommed this book to others. The book presented useful information in a fun and exciting way.
All aboard for fun & learning!.......2004-09-28
Rebeccasreads highly recommends Peter Sis' THE TRAIN OF STATES as a splendid way to learn not only the names of all our states, also which came first & for what best each is known.
THE TRAIN OF STATES is the kind of book that will be read from generation to generation, teaching math, geography, history, patriotism & the fantastic use of imagination.
Very well done!
Book Description
Completing our acclaimed Discover America State by State series is A is for Aloha: A Hawaii Alphabet. The landscape of Hawaii is as exotic as its history and people. Written and illustrated by native Hawaiians, Uilani Goldsberry and Tammy Yee, A is for Aloha is a lovingly created introduction to one of the most-visited places on Earth. From the meaning of the word aloha to the plight of the state bird author Uilani Goldsberry answers questions that most Malihinis have about this lush multi-island paradise.

A is for Aloha: A Hawai'i Alphabet Edition.......2007-07-27
We ordered this book for our grandson to give as a gift on our return trip from Hawaii. We had vacationed on two of the islands for 2 weeks.
The book was such a delight. It was fun for us to review the things that we saw and be able to share it with our boys through the book. The book was very factual, colorful and our grandsons loved it.
A is for Aloha... good for all ages.......2006-06-11
What a great book! This one, written by U'Ilani Goldsberry and illustrated by Tammy Yee, is a nice addition to the Discover America State By State series. The alphabet is focused on Hawaiiana, of course. There are details of the alphabetized words ("A is for aloha") that make it appropriate for all ages, and I found them quite interesting.
There were a few things that irritated me. "Leis" is a weird word, since there is no "s" in the Hawaiian alphabet to mix with the Hawaiian word "lei". And "Zoning" for "z"... what's this about? Nevertheless, Goldsberry's text, and of course Tammy Yee's exquisite watercolors, make this a wonderful gift for that special person who is a kid at heart.

Book Description
Teddy Roosevelt had poor health throughout his childhood, but that didn't keep him from his love of nature or books. Teddy grew up to be strong and healthy. He became a fearless war hero and the youngest United States president.
Customer Reviews:
Ok for the Most Part.......2004-12-09
The story about Teddy Roosevelt is pretty interesting. I scratched my head at learning that the United States entered the Spanish-American War because the US was afraid of Spain invading them. What??????? I would sentence this writer, her editor and the publishing company back to History 101 for remediation!
Book Description
On a dark night of howling rain and booming thunder, Jackson and Millicent MacGruder welcome a new baby girl into their lives. Imagine their surprise when she sits up, thanks them for bringing her into the world, and informs them that she's quite partial to the name Rose.
So begins the story of Thunder Rose, who drinks her milk straight from the cow and prefers the company of her bull, Tater, to any kitten or puppy. Rose is capturing outlaws by the time she's a teenager, but she always has time to find joy in a song. Jerdine Nolen and Kadir Nelson have created a tall tale--and a powerful new African American heroine--to delight readers of all ages.
Customer Reviews:
Girls rule!.......2007-10-04
Everyone knows Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill.......now here comes a hero from literature's Tall Tales for the girls in your life. Thunder Rose is fun, funny and exhibits true "girl power".
Wonderfully Written, A Classic!.......2007-09-23
My son and I really enjoyed this book. We were lucky enough to get an advanced copy of this book a couple of years ago at a NCTE conference. My son took it to class for "Book Day" and all the students enjoyed it too. What makes this book unique is that this is a tall tale about a young African American girl. It's a lesson to all children that heroes/heroines come in all sizes and colors!!
a fun tall tale.......2005-06-30
This is a good book for young children- especially young black girls. A strong heroine to breath fresh inspiration and courage to young minds. OK, and it's just fun to read and look at too!
Rave Review of Thunder Rose.......2005-02-10
Thunder Rose is a story of a young girl who displays characteristics that are bigger than life. The story starts with the reader finding out that Rose is born with the power of thunder and lightning coursing through her veins. This power gives her the ability to perform unimaginable tasks. For example, she is able to talk at the time of her birth, lift a cow my herself, twist scraps of metal with her bare hands, and stop a powerful tornado. Throughout the book there are on-going clues that allow the reader to see beyond the powers she displays on the outside to the person she is on the inside. The descriptive language and detailed illustrations keep the reader engaged and excited to reach the powerful ending.
Worth a second look.......2004-12-01
I disagree with E.Bird ... Thunder Rose is a gem! The story rises, falls and builds lyrically when read aloud to a young one (I think that actually reading the story out loud makes the difference). The strength of lightning and thunder in this young African-American cowgirl is inspiring, as are the illustrations. An excellent tall tale!

Customer Reviews:
A great Michigan book.......2001-11-26
A great book about all the things that make Michigan memorable. I got this book for my 3 year old and found the text a little too involved for a toddler, but great for my elementary age nephews. My sister lives in Florida and she loves to see all the Michigan things she misses while reading a book to her kids.
Excellent Book: A Must Read!.......2001-04-09
This book helped my little sister to learn how to count. She loved (and still loves!) this cute book that teaches you how to count. We also live in Michigan, beautiful Michigan, and that helped my sister, too. It is truly a classic, and of course, like most good, small books, was written by Kathy-Jo Wargin.
A MUST READ!!!

Customer Reviews:
Very Well done........2002-05-29
...Desert Town, written by Bonnie and Arthur Geisert, is an overview of life in a town in the middle of the desert. The story goes through what daily life for the residents is like and shows some interesting details that separate them from AnyTown, USA. The people of the town have to alter their lives to adapt to their environment. They change many daily activities to avoid the blistering heat of their locale. Yet through it all, the people do not seem to mind their unusual lives. The illustrations are simple and direct and seem to display accurately the desolate feel of a real desert. The text unfolds an interesting and informative story and informs the reader of what life in a desert can be like. A delightful combination of text and pictures, the book gives an accurate account of desert life. The story is simple but allows for the reader to discover a different ways of life in a different kind of town.
A very simple, realistic story of small town living.......2001-06-09

A Fascinating Read.......2003-10-23
It's so fascinating to read the journal of a little boy who became President. This is a captivating and well-written book that gives kids a ton of ideas for keeping a journal for themselves. And if you go to the author's website, she even has excerpts from her own childhood diary to share! A wonderful choice.
