Book Description

Have you ever wondered why some relationships are wonderful and others are just catastrophic and tragic? Why do we get along with some people and with others just seem to constantly engage in bitter fighting? In this fascinating and helpful book, internationally renowned psychic Sylvia Browne examines why we form our relationships with certain individuals . . . for better or for worse. From the lifelong connection of a loving marriage to the short and bitter agony of a brief encounter leading to divorce and heartache, she reveals why we have joyful and happy relationships on the one hand and chaotic, hateful and painful ones on the other.
Sylvia takes us on a remarkable excursion that covers all the different types of relationships we’ll encounter in life. From our childhood experiences to our golden years, she helps us see why we form both good and bad unions, and she also explores how our themes and charts of life can interact with others in both positive and negative ways—creating either lifelong love or friendship or a situation doomed for disaster. Sylvia enables us to come to a true understanding of why we have certain compulsions and attractions for some people while being totally repulsed by others. By utilizing Sylvia’s marvelous insights, we can all learn how to cultivate our relationships (and sift the wheat from the chaff) in order to live a happier and more fulfilling life.

3 out of 5 stars It was just okay........2007-10-04

Sylvia's books these days seem to be more full of, "fluff," than anything else. There is no more original content. This book seems to be more of her ramblings about the people she knows or meets in her life. There is of course a purpose and you need to read through all the, "fluff," to get to the point. I guess if she just flat out told you the point there would be 200 blank pages to fill.

3 out of 5 stars I dont love this one as much as her other books.......2007-10-03

While I always get a good feeling of having learned something after reading her books, this one left me hanging. I was waiting for more.

4 out of 5 stars Enlightening Book on Spiritual Relationships.......2007-09-05

As Sylvia Browne asserts many books have been written on having a better sex life, staying married or how to have a friendly divorce. This is one of the few books available on spiritual meaning of relationships in our lives.

Sylvia shows how to bring spiritual understanding to our relationships - that our relationships have a deeper meaning. The people in our life have been selected by our soul before our birth for our spiritual development. So each person in our life teaches us something and we in turn teach them something. Even people we meet casually such as the grocery store clerk, bank teller or the person delivering our mail all are part of spiritual connections in our lives.

Connection with family and close friends is often taken for granted but these relationships are particularly conducive for our growth. Browne even contends that the annoying co-worker or boss can teach us important lessons for our soul growth. The best part of the book is the exploration of the 47 life themes, which have a higher and lower expression.

The book has a warm tone because Sylvia shares her own relationship challenges. This book is worth reading just for the Life Themes and fans of Sylvia Browne will be most satisfied with this book, since it gives a lot of depth to her ideas previously stated elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars No one knows more about yourself than you do.......2007-08-19

Who are these people giving this book 4 and 5 stars and do they really know about Sylvia Browne? Even the few bad reviews are from fans who claim to "love" her and sound rather apologetic for giving her anything but the highest praise. What's going on? Someone please tell me, did I just enter the Twilight Zone...?

I have always been fascinated with Sylvia Browne because she is probably the most famous psychic of any first-world country. So, I decided to read this book with an open mind. But I wasn't at all happy with it. It seems shoddy, choppy and thrown together quickly. And Sylvia doesn't offer up anything (in the way of literary references) to back up her claims. I suppose some could say that this is based on "blind faith." But should faith also be deaf, dumb and stupid?

For years, I have watched Sylvia on the Montel Show and she always arrogantly seems so cocky when she doles out her "readings." For example, someone could tell her that such and such happened to them and Sylvia will quickly reply, "oh I know" as if she really does know. But if she knew, why didn't she volunteer this info up front, first? I have also noticed that she almost always exclusively only gives detailed info about past lives, the "after world," and other deceased "spirits." But Sylvia Browne is never overly explicit or detailed when she is talking about the here and now. Why is that? Also, one more thing I have noticed about Sylvia; she always seems incredibly cold, condescending, downright rude, pushy, bored, and incredibly belittling when she gives her "readings." Shouldn't a spiritual advisor be welcoming, loving, warm and inviting? Has Sylvia ever comforted any of the grieving parents on Montel or has she ever given any of them a gratis reading after the show when the cameras weren't rolling? No she has not. That is a fact. I can remember a lady once kept pressing her with specific questions on the show, and Sylvia became very aggravated and said something to the effect of, "this is what I 'see' and that's that." Talk about being a wolf in wolf's clothing. Maybe that's better because she would be easier to spot? You'd think so, but people still adore her and worship her and follow her advice to the letter.

When is the last time a corporation also referred to their organization as a church? Sylvia Browne does it. But her "corporation" and "church" are more like a cult because it's all about money and profit; not about adding some happiness and spirituality into someone's life (free of charge.) And if in fact she is a leader of a church, why should she charge her parishioners that want to seek her out for advice? At best, this is an oxymoron: Sylvia Browne Corp./Church. Does Sylvia Browne/the Sylvia Browne Corp. pay taxes? Or is she tax-exempt? This is a very valid question.

I decided to do a little research after reading "Spiritual Connections" by Sylvia because I wanted to see if she really was all she was cracked up to be; after all, maybe I am just being super-critical and Sylvia is honest and totally caring and loving? I began my search on Wikipedia.

From there, I found an incredibly informative site, StopSylviaBrowne. I spent more than 3 straight hours on that site reading everything I could about Sylvia. I have never seen a site so professionally laid out that included facts to back up everything the Webmaster stated. Everything that I initially felt about Sylvia was confirmed (and more.) I have since learned that Sylvia Browne is a convicted felon that preys on vulnerable people because these are the ones that are most likely to pay exorbitant moneys for "help", buy her books, go to her events and recommend her. I have also found out that her first husband has totally discredited her and her son (who also claims to be a psychic.) And, I have found out that Sylvia was caught in numerous half-truths, made-up stories and downright lies. The most notable being her higher-education; she has stated that she has a Masters Degree in English. There is zero proof that Sylvia has a Masters Degree in English from any accredited institution.

If you simply think that Sylvia is total entertainment and you watch her on TV or read her books once in a while then that's fine in and of it self. I suppose there's no harm in that. But if you're about to shell out the hundreds of dollars for one of her "telephone readings" or the thousands of dollars for one of her "in-person meetings" then I strongly recommend that you do some research on her first because I don't want you to be taken advantage of. One more thing that Sylvia's followers should keep in mind is that no one knows more about yourself than you do!

5 out of 5 stars Utterly !.......2007-08-09

After reading "Spiritual Connections," I was totally and utterly amazed by Sylvia's profound spiritual insights and fascinating perspectives (especially through her invisible spirit guide Francine, who seems to have come into Sylvia's life in three or five contradictory ways, depending on which Browne tome you read). Her astounding proven accuracy as a psychic, totally verifiable, has convinced me that Sylvia's the real deal, a veritable Goddess on Earth with disturbingly long talons, and she's well worth the mad money she charges for her phone consults! Forget your so-called hifalutin' "science," forget those overeducated quacks with PhDs and researchers with their fancy protocols and let Sylvia be your guide. Humans just want proof, proof, proof. Surrender your power to her, open heart and wallet. No less an authority on psychic matters than Montel endorses her, as do her true believers, so she must be the real deal. By all means, buy this book NOW! Buy a spare, just in case! Get an extra for a friend!

Got a stress case in your life? Of course you do: "Without question, many of us have mastered the neurotic art of spending much of our lives worrying about a variety of things all at once." Carlson's cheerful book aims to make us stop and smell--if not roses--whatever is sitting in front of our noses. Don't Sweat the Small Stuff... offers 100 meditations designed to make you appreciate being alive, keep your emotions (especially anger and dissatisfaction) in proper perspective, and cherish other people as the unique miracles they are. It's an owner's manual of the heart, and if you follow the directions, you will be a happier, more harmonious person. Like Stairmasters, oat bran, and other things that are good for you, the meditations take discipline. Even so, some of the strategies are kind of fun: "Imagine the people in your life as tiny infants and as 100-year-old adults." The trouble is, once you start, it's hard to stop.

I can buy "don't sweat the small stuff," but when the author adds "it's all small stuff" he just lost all credibility. It's ALL small stuff? Tell that to a family whose loved one was just murdered. Or a parent who has to raise three severly deformed babies. That's the problem with self-help books of this genre, everything is penned into a nicely managed coral that totally ignores the REAL pains of life. If you want inspirational truth, check out the Bible where even Jesus, who never pulled any punches, tells us "life is difficult."

This book should be mandatory in high schools. It would help kids understand in simple ways how to response to emotional and spiritual and body. Very positive book for living the fast pace we live in today..I urge parents to get don,t sweat the small for teens..

I never received the above mentioned book, and ONCE AGAIN very disatisfied with the used book service and will try another company. Granted there was a change of address and later a change in password because "review request" would not accept original password. Very UNSATISFIED wih service, and for $7.00 I would not waist anymore of my valuable time pursuing the mater....James A. Stapleton

PS. If I see the charge on my credit card I will dispute chatge.

Reading "Dont Sweat the Small Stuff" is a must for people like me who feel that they can't sit down and watch the news until he or she has run down a to-do list and checked off everything.

5 out of 5 stars Putting life into its proper perspective.......2007-08-08

It has been my experience that life has a tendency to give us what we need (at the most unexpected times) when dealing and coping with problems in our lives. The other afternoon, for example, in my disorganized garage, was searching frantically for an old receipt for tax purposes. Now it really wasn't worth much, nevertheless, to me this tiny problem was all pressing and all stressing. In the scheme of things, it wasn't worth the energy. What I did find in one of the old boxes, though, was this terrific little book. Sitting down on a box amongst the dust, I read it for at least an hour and within that short span of time, it truly changed my perspective on what is really important to gain a more loving and stress-free existence.

Interestingly as a child my father's favourite saying was, "Don't sweat the details:" Meaning don't let little things get in the way of what is important. Richard Carlson's message is basically the same. In this treasure of a book, he has written 100 suggestions on how to deal with life's "small stuff", such as developing our patience, compassion, and our tendencies to criticise and make knee-jerk judgements; essentially developing our potential to become more caring and loving human beings.

My personal favourites:

Make Peace with Imperfection

Develop your compassion

Don't interrupt Others or Finish Their Sentences

Become a Better Listener

Become an Early Riser

Stop Blaming Others

Practice Random Acts of Kindness

There are 93 other suggestions in this book that if practiced could well change one's life for the better. But like all things truly valuable, it takes work, practice and discipline to achieve anything worthwhile on this planet.

I've decided to choose one suggestion a day and make a conscious effort to practice it; because I believe if followed will change life's vagaries and problems, at least putting them into a proper perspective.

Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Better Home-Organizing Books.......2007-10-18

While I've never seen his television program ("Clean Sweep" on TLC), any book that starts off with a quote from Chuck Palahniuk's "Fight Club" can't be bad. Walsh is entertaining and informative, and packs a lot into the brief 200 pages of "It's All Too Much."

Walsh not only addresses the clutter--he addresses the reasons behind the clutter. For instance, why do we collect books? "In many cases, [you] feel that owning the book is equivalent to owning the knowledge in the book...letting go of a book is tantamount to throwing that knowledge away--no matter whether [you] have read the book or not...However, when you buy a book, you do not suddenly own the wisdom it contains--all you have bought is words on paper." Deep thoughts for a book on household cleaning!

5 out of 5 stars Extremely practical and helpful guide - worth the cover price for sure, but declutter this when you finish clearing your home!.......2007-10-08

I have some of the usual problems with enjoying shopping and enjoying the things that I own, but having a few too many of these things to truly find my living space useful, comfortable, and attarctive. Add to this the fast that my partner is a total and incurable packrat, and you have the recipe for a couple that needs this book!

I checked it out from the library because I didn't think there would be enough practical info here to make it worth buying. I was wrong. Not only are there chapters that are broken down into steps and reasoned arguments for purging excess, but those steps and reasoned arguments are both pithy and substantial enough that I remember them and find them compelling even when away from the book.

As I walked through the house, the biggest thing I had to remember was that if I had a treasure, was I displaying it and treating it with the great respect it deserves? If not, then maybe it isn't as big of a treasure as I think it is, and maybe I could take a photo of it and get rid of it.

I also had to ask myself, am I holding on to things because other people gave me their treasure? Lots of people give me things, but if it isn't truly meaningful to me and useful to me, then I can either ask them if they'd like it back or get rid of it myself. If it were truly a treasure to them, then why is it taking up space in MY house?

There are a few exceptions to there rules of thumb, but overall he hits the nail on the head with his advice, and made me feel downright invigorated about getting rid of extra "stuff". After all, having craft supplies is meaningless if my craft table is so overstuffed that I can't actually do crafts on it, and the same goes for the other areas of my home.

This book is inspirational, practical, and worth more than one read. Thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars I love Peter Walsh!.......2007-10-04

Very good book for people who want to not only 'clear clutter', but change their lives. It helps you look at what you want to create - to have - in your life - not what you're 'giving up' by getting rid of stuff that you think so 'dear' to you. The idea that 'everything in your home is there with your consent', made me think twice - and make some changes!

5 out of 5 stars Great (if dogmatic) help for an overwhelmed clutterer.......2007-09-29

I purchased this book as an audio CD. Peter Walsh has a nice, soft supportive voice and is an easy listen. My house was in chaos, partly due to my working, family illnesses, my tendency to collect more than enough of everything, and a bout of severe depression. I finally quit my job and tackled the overwhelming mess. It was not only exhausting and depressing but also boring!!!! Peter became part of my support system. I played his CD's over and over as I cleaned. It kept me focused on how bad things can get (and had gotten for me) as well as how to escape and hope to have a new life.

5 out of 5 stars More than just "how to organize what you have"..........2007-09-23

My wife and I have been struggling lately with the "too much stuff" syndrome... too many clothes, too much clutter, etc. The book It's All Too Much: An Easy Plan for Living a Richer Life with Less Stuff by Peter Walsh caught my eye on one of the personal improvement blogs I follow. I think Sue and I now have a handle on how we need to approach our clutter situation, and it's not a matter of organizing the junk we have... :)

Afterword: Take What You've Learned into the World; Acknowledgements

Walsh is a professional organizer who is part of the show Clean Sweep. So this isn't just a hobby with him. It's his life. Many of the people he works with have significant issues with hoarding, to the extent that it affects their day-to-day existence in the house. Rather than just going in and throwing stuff out for them (which would just mean they have more room to hoard with), he works with their emotional issues that put them in this predicament in the first place. By imagining the life you want to lead, you can start to figure out the way your space needs to be laid out. Then dealing with the emotional attachment behind why certain things are compulsively saved, you can begin to discard stuff without suffering from major trauma as the trash man hauls it away. :) I liked his progression from clearing surface clutter to looking at what you actually use (rather than what you think you might use one of these days). Once you get things down to a workable level, then you can practice the "something comes in, something goes out" philosophy. Bottom line, by using these techniques and dealing with the underlying causes, you *can* have a life that's less cluttered and more peaceful.

Fortunately, my wife and I are not at the stage of many of Walsh's clients. But we could be doing so much better, and be so much happier. After we get back from our vacation, I think that the trashman is going to start getting a major workout. I already started today by going through all my clothes and culling out half of what I owned. Given the entertaining style of writing and practical advice dished out here, I think we're well on our way.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazed.......2007-10-17

I was and still am amazed at how doing the little things suggested in this book have made my life EASIER! It isn't anything profound, but it is written in a way that is encouraging and motivating!

    5 out of 5 stars love it!!!!.......2007-10-11

I like her no nonsense help. I haven't even followed all her instructions yet because I'm a real hard case but even with just the begining steps my husband and family are noticeing a difference in my home already. I'm so glad I bought this book I can't wait to get her other books as well.

3 out of 5 stars Fun but a little too compulsive........2007-10-04

I bought this for my daughter, to help her with her house, life, and anything else. I didn't want her to be insulted, so I read it and told her I bought it for me but thought she might like it too. It started out great, great ideas, funny, fun. But it got a little too over the edge....compulsive...neat freakish towards the end. I told my daughter to try to incorporate SOME of the Flylady's tips into her routine. She hasn't read it yet, but I'm hoping she learns something from it, because she is a very disorganized person. It seemed there were some discrepancies in the book about her life, which makes you feel she's making all of this up to make money, not to share her experience. Hopefully my daughter doesn't catch on to some of it.

    5 out of 5 stars Sink Reflections - Flylady - book.......2007-09-25

I loved this book and think it had great motivational ideas. Hopefully it will keep me encouraged to get organized and learn to FLY.

4 out of 5 stars Boy do I need this book!!.......2007-09-13

I am starting to FLY, babysteps, but it is a beginning. It is way too fun! Can't wait to get on the live blog.

Biblical interpretation for both beginning and experienced Bible readers. Changes to the new third edition include: updated language, new foreword, improved diagrams, substantial rewriting of several chapters to make them more user-friendly, and updated list of recommended commentaries and resources.

    Download Description

The primary task of Bible study is to determine what the Scriptures meant at the time they were written and how that meaning applies to us today. This vital guide focuses on the historical contexts of the Bible and explains differences between the Old Testament narratives, the Epistles, Gospels, Parables, Psalms and more. It's a practical approach to Bible study -- one that makes good sense and is easy to understand. This new edition includes, among other changes, a new section on the Song of Songs and an updated list of recommended commentaries and resources.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-09-22

For some reason, I resisted reading this book for years. Now, I wish I'd read it five years ago because it is so full of helpful information.
The authors first give basic principles for interpreting scripture and then go on to apply those principles to the different genres of the Bible - epistles, historical narrative, prophetic literature, poetry, wisdom literature, etc. They also give sound principles for dealing with the more controversial issues of scripture with great balance and wisdom. The chapter on the book of Revelation alone is worth the purchase price.
The book also contains a fine appendix listing recommended commentaries for each book of the Bible. They also explain how to choose a good commentary and how to use the commentary once you've chosen it.
In short, this is a wonderful book. I don't think I agree with everything they say, but they have graciously given permission to have disagreement on these things. In fact, I believe they actually model for the Christian community how to have dignified and loving disagreements (which they seem to have with each other on a couple of points) on matters that are not central to the faith, but still important. Their love and respect for scripture shines through every page, as does their humility in approaching it.

4 out of 5 stars For King James Only Readers..........2007-09-08

If you are like that last reviewer who only reads the King James Version and relies solely on the Holy Spirit for illumination...
I wot what thou dost wist.
(If you can read the preceeding sentence, then the KJV is the Bible for you!) The Reformers practiced the same basic methods of Bible study that Fee is teaching in this book. The Reformers--Luther, Calvin, etc.--made themselves familiar with ancient culture and language as well as with the opinions of godly commentators before them. When the Reformation came to England the Bible Christians used was the Geneva Bible of 1599. It was the dominant Bible of English Protestants for many decades AFTER the KJV was published in 1611.

    1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2007-09-04

I can tell you how to read the bible for all it's worth in two easy steps.

    1) Get a King James Bible, the only preserved Word of God.
    2) Pray as you read it. Christ is the Word (John 1:1). The Holy Spirit will enlighten you as you study it. If there are words you don't understand they are all in any common dictionary.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful, Insightful Guidelines for Bible Study.......2007-08-15

How to Read the Bible for All its Worth is an excellent introduction to reading and interpreting the Bible. It looks at the overall big picture of Biblical relevancy and history, as well as significance for today.

The authors offer several guidelines like reading the Bible in its historical context for its initial audience and how to read it according to its form and purpose. Then, how to interpret it for today.

They provide chapters on the various parts of the Bible like the historical narratives, prophets, psalms, gospels, letters and Revelation and discuss how to interpret these portions of the Bible in their unique formats.

I think the authors show readers how to deal with the Bible in an academic setting but may esteem their own insights and opinions too much. They somewhat discount the Holy Spirits ministry in applying the word to individuals as they read the Bible. They preclude the Holy Spirit from using scripture to speak to an individual in a way that may be unique or different from the authors' exegesis and hermeneutics.

Overall, they do steer readers in the right direction regarding Bible study.

5 out of 5 stars If I could recommend just one book, this would be it........2007-04-13

I wish that I had read, "How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth" twenty years ago. Besides the Bible, this might be the most useful book that you will ever read in your Christian walk.

The authors - one a New Testament scholar and one an Old Testament scholar - both of which have written some very good commentaries previously, break down the the task of making the best use of your Bible study time. While both authors have great insight, they make their points in a very clear, easy to understand way. They show the importance of context (historical and literary), the different types of writing in Scripture and how to approach them, and other practical tips on how to get the most out of your Bible reading time. They even give some pointers on what to look for when selecting a Bible translation. Though I disagree with their conclusions about the TNIV (I'm a NASB man myself) the translation information was still worth reading.

In summary, I wish I could give this book six stars. Despite having read the Bible daily for over twenty years, there were a lot of things that hadn't really occured to me until I read this fine book. The authors give a lot of real world insight on how to get the most out of reading the Bible. In the end, isn't that something that we all want? I liked it so much that I passed on my copy to a friend.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars For Professionals: Beattie was One of the Great Translators.......2007-07-22

Beattie's remarkable capacity to grasp the "big concepts" in 20th century psychophilosophy and reframe them in concrete lay language may have reached its peak in BC. She came to the then relatively new field of recovery from substance and process behavior abuse from a career in journalism and -- along with Janet Geringer Woititz, Claudia Black, Patrick Carnes and Anne Wilson Schaef -- pretty much boosted the entire field into a much higher orbit.

Most clinical professionals I know concede that the field is really oriented in these directions in the millennial era -because- of the useful and palatable psychoeducation these authors provided to so many in the 12 Step recovery leagues, as well as over the tube. Even more remarkably, Beattie was in her 30s when she did the bulk of her groundbreaking work. Her Co-Dependents Anonymous (CoDA) trilogy, which includes Codependent No More and The Codependents Guide to the Twelve Steps, remains the staple of study for those who want to shake off their impulses to rescue (control), be victimized (scapegoated) and persecute (abuse).

(While I've rarely seen a true passive-aggressive or obsessive-compulsive give it -all- up in CoDA or Adult Children of Alcoholics, I've surely seen them abandon a large share of their behavioral demonstrations.)

Beattie's descriptions of the principles of Perls' gestalt, Sullivan's and Benjamin's psychodynamic requirement to connect one's interpersonal history with what they'e doing right now, Ellis's and Beck's notions about the legacies of dysfunctional beliefs, Gorski's ideas about relapse prevention, Van der Kolk's recycling of reactivity (and Cermak's more professional -- and tedious -- "bridging" adaptations of it) are so adroit and reflective of a clear understanding of Piaget, that most with at least high-school-level reading capacity can "get it" here.

Make no mistake, OCPDs and PAPDs (as well as DPDs) need to read her earlier book to acquire a foundation, and may well get a great deal of value from a year plowing through Co-Dependents Anonymous in CoDA book studies, but the bibliotherapy and conceptual foundations provided in BC are the high point. The use of this text in Millon's personality-guided context for the three DSM Axis II demonstrations cited above would seem almost mandatory.

5 out of 5 stars melody beattie does it again.......2007-03-15

Melody Beattie's follow up to Codependent No More does not disappoint. I love it. It has fantastic stories and helpful strategies to live a happier life. I love this author.

5 out of 5 stars READ ALL ABOUT IT**** THE REAL STORY.......2006-08-12

The truth of the matter is:

We don't want to hear it and we make any excuse to deny it. This book is a denial killer!

I have been in recovery for years and let me just tell you, Beattie is right on top of the root problem. No matter who reads the words, the truth is loud and clear. I would recommend this item to anyone having problems with any relationship.

You don't need to be a doctor or a shrink to see the writing on the wall. Beattie spells it out and even if you don't agree, it will open your mind to change. Worth every penny spent!

5 out of 5 stars good book a little longer to get.......2005-10-01

An excellent book for those who are continuing recovery! We already have the scattered bits and pieces of information, now what do we do with them and how do we integrate them into our lives and become the people we were born to be.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful book for codependents and those wishing to avoid it.......2004-12-05

While I have not read the author's other works, I thought this a very valuable book in and of itself. It sheds much light on the topic and helped me to become sensitized to the (once the book was read) obvious signs of codependency in people. By doing this, it enabled me to avoid situations where I could become codependent in a relationship. I think that, as in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, there are levels of psychological situations and/or problems. Thus, there may be people inherently inclined towards codependency, but there may also be people who are thrust into it due to the demands of others. The latter may find this book incredibly helpful in avoiding such relationships and in helping their dependent person seek real help vs. codependency from another person. There are also a number of great quotes by the author in this book. A few are:

    p. 70: "It's hard to feel compassion for someone while that person is using or victimizing us."

    p. 71: "If everything looks black, we've probably got our eyes shut."

    p. 164: "Who we're in a relationship with says as much about us as it does about them."
Earnie Tucker (quoted by Melody Beattie)

Codependency is not something to make light of, it's as much (if not more) the codependent's problem as the dependent's. As Caroline Casey humorously noted in "Making the Gods Work for You" (Harmony Books NY 1998), on page 72:
"What do codependents see when they die? Someone else's life flashes before their eyes."

"The more I read the Bible, the more evident it becomes that everything I have ever taught or written about effective leadership over the past 25 years, Jesus did to perfection. He is simply the greatest leadership role model of all time." Ken Blanchard

With simple yet profound principles from the life of Jesus, and dozens of stories and leadership examples from his life experiences, veteran author, speaker and leadership expert Ken Blanchard guides readers through the process of discovering how to lead like Jesus. He describes it as the process of aligning two internal domains-the heart and the head-and two external domains, the hands and the habits. These four dimensions of leadership form the outline for this very practical and transformational book.

    Customer Reviews:

Great book that is easy to read and well organized. Deals with the fundementals such as motive and perspective, and is very effective.

5 out of 5 stars Lead Like Jesus to become a Level 5 Leader.......2007-08-02

Excellent book. One of my "a-ha!" moments was realizing that Jesus is a Level 5 Leader. In Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't, Jim Collins explains that companies making the leap from good to great had Level 5 leaders in key positions, including the CEO, at the time of transition. He describes a Level 5 leader as a paradox of someone having great personal humility and professional will, having more ambition for the company/team than for themselves, and someone having an unwaivering resolve to do whatever must be done no matter how difficult.

A CEO describing herself as one with big ambition, ego, and drive asked Jim if you can learn to become a Level 5 Leader. He said that the data did not point to anything specific, so those aspiring to reach Level 5 should focus on the other discovered disciplines of becoming a good to great company.

I find Lead Like Jesus answers the question. Among other things it is a wonderful manual for becoming a Level 5 Leader.

4 out of 5 stars Lead Like Jesus.......2007-07-09

This is a great guide for leaders of all forms. Definitely makes you take a closer look at the way you lead and the way you live. As I work to follow the ideas in this book, I find that I am a happier supervisor.

5 out of 5 stars Lead Like Jesus by Blanchard.......2006-07-22

The author defines leadership as influence in a positive or negative direction. Given this definition, Jesus was the greatest
leader of all time. He was firmly grounded in the Rabinical
Judaism of the time. With this background, He took the fledging
Christian community on a Transformational Journey culminating in
His own crucifixion and a fantastic earthquake conincidental with
the Death and Resurrection. The author reminds us that the
ultimate leader serves the community first and not himself/herself.

Leadership comes from a variety of personal sources. i.e.
    - the heart is the center of the leadership thrust
    - the head formulates strategies and movement forward
    - the hands relate to crafting specific actions
    - the habits relate to consistency/predictability of actions

Blanchard presents the contrast between the serving leader
and the self-serving leader. The serving leader actively
engages in acts on behalf of the community while the self-serving
leader benefits himself mainly. In providing service, the serving
leader implements specific plans to move the community forward.
This was done very skillfully by Christ in His own time.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-06-29

If you want to get a clear prespective on how to relate and treat others and desire personal growth this is the book.

Second to none! This saintly leadership into holiness through lives of seven saints speaks to the very core of what God expects of all humans, to recognize the purpose for what God placed each and every person on the face of this earth to be. God desires us to love Him, will not force us, can exist without us, and yet guides us through the examples of others to serve Him in a capacity that we can all attain. The examples of prayerfullness are levels of deep communication with God and He with us.
You will find yourself in holiness in this book or it will find you at a depth that you can emerge to become more holy.

I am still reading this book - but I read a page or two - then rush to Amazon to order a copy for a friend who will love it; read another page or two or three - put it down, swooning a bit while running to the computer to order another copy for someone I know who will love it - at this rate I may never finish this book! But, this I know for certain - The Fulfillment of All Desire is going to be one of my favorite books of all time. It is already changing my life! I give it 10 stars so you must double my rating, Amazon!

Ralph Martin may have done his finest work and The Fulfullment of All Desire possibly will be his finest hour. This book does not just tell us what we need to do - and what we already know we need to do - it tells us how to do it!!! These Doctors of the Church have "been-there-and-back" and know how to help us find our way. As we listen and learn, we will begin to live the life of one with the Saintly Fulfillment of All Desire. Just order this book! I am working on "affection for sin" right now.

The Doctors are in! St. Augustine, St. Francis De Sales (I am in his office), St. Catherine of Siena, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. Therese of Lisieux. I have a message from one of these doctors and it is this: "In the first place it should be known that if anyone is seeking God, the Beloved is seeking that person much more." That is from John of the Cross.

Part bildungsroman, part horse opera, part meditation on courage and loyalty, this beautifully crafted novel won the National Book Award in 1992. The plot is simple enough. John Grady Cole, a 16-year-old dispossessed Texan, crosses the Rio Grande into Mexico in 1949, accompanied by his pal Lacey Rawlins. The two precocious horsemen pick up a sidekick--a laughable but deadly marksman named Jimmy Blevins--encounter various adventures on their way south and finally arrive at a paradisiacal hacienda where Cole falls into an ill-fated romance. Readers familiar with McCarthy's Faulknerian prose will find the writing more restrained than in Suttree and Blood Meridian. Newcomers will be mesmerized by the tragic tale of John Grady Cole's coming of age.

5 out of 5 stars A Super Modern Western Adventure!.......2007-09-22

Note: I made some Mormon reader angry over my reviews of books written by Mormons out to prove the Book of Mormon, and that person has been slamming my reviews. This review of "All the Pretty Horses" is pretty good. I didn't want to ruin the story by telling too much. Your "helpful" votes are appreciated.

This memorable novel caught me and wouldn't let go. Around 1948, two teenage boys from Texas ride their horses down into Mexico. From there, the adventure begins. For a while, they live at a cattle ranch where the one boy falls in love with the wealthy rancher's daughter.

    Highly recommended.

McCarthy is a powerful writer, and his novel "Blood Meridian" is the most powerful novel I ever read (see my review where I compare his prose to that of Conrad).

    Blood Meridian:

"That night they rode through a region electric and wild where strange shapes of soft blue fire ran over the metal of the hoses' trappings and the wagonwheels rolled in hoops of fire and little shapes of pale blue light came to perch in the ears of the horses and in the beards of the men. All night sheetlightning quaked and sourceless to the west beyond the midnight thunderheads, making a bluish day of the distant desert, the mountains on the sudden skyline stark and black and lived like a land of some other order out there whose true geology was not stone but fear. The thunder moved up from the southwest and lightning lit the desert all about them, blue and barren, great clanging reaches ordered out of the absolute night like some demon kingdom summoned up or changeling land that come the day would leave them neither trace nor smoke nor ruin more than any troubling dream."

Compare above lines to similar lines in "The Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad:

"We could have fancied ourselves the first of men taking possession of an accursed inheritance, to be subdued at the cost of profound anguish and of excessive toil. But suddenly, as we struggled round a bend, there would be a glimpse of rush walls, of peaked grass-roofs, a burst of yells, a whirl of black limbs, a mass of hands clapping, of feet stamping, of bodies swaying, , of eyes rolling, under the droop of heavy and motionless foliage. The steamer toiled along slowly on the edge of a black and incomprehensible frenzy. The prehistoric man was cursing us, praying to us, welcoming us--who could tell" we were cut off from the comprehension of our surroundings; we glided past like phantoms, wondering and secretly appalled, as sane men would be before an enthusiastic outbreak in a madhouse. We could not understand because we were too far and could not remember because we were travelling in the night of first ages, of those ages that are gone, leaving hardly a sign--and no memories."

    4 out of 5 stars Cowboys!~.......2007-09-18

This book is short but really interesting. Anybody can read it quickly. The only confusing part is that the book has many quotes but it doesn't say who is saying it. This is why sometimes you have to think twice about who said this and that. The lovestory is not like any typical teenage lovestory- in one word it is DIFFERENT.

5 out of 5 stars Part "High Plains Drifter" and Part "Romeo and Juliet.".......2007-09-10

Cormac McCarthy was born in Rhode island and grew up in Tennessee, but now lives in Tesuque, New Mexico. He is viewed by many as one of the more unusual and most talented of the current American writers. For example, Harold Bloom has written a number of things about McCarthy.

Some describe Mccarthy as a loner. Coincidentally, that is what one might call the protagonist in the present novel: John Grady. The novel is set in the 1950s time period and Grady is a young man or mature boy caught between the horse and buggy days of the old west and the new west connected by modern highways. Grady has a fascination for horses and is a talented rider.

The story is about two men who ride their horses into Mexico and work as ranch hands in Mexico. It is part love story and part a tale of justice and adventure, i.e.: Grady meets a woman in Mexico. The protagonist is a sympathetic character and most readers will find it to be a compelling read.

Some might not like it for the prose. The prose is complicated by design. I thought the first thirty pages were sometimes a bit awful but effective as well, but then McCarthy lightens up a bit on his writing. He reminded me a bit of the opening of Farewell to Arms where Hemingway tries to set the mood through the use of prose: Hemingway uses a narrative of the natural surroundings. McCarthy uses expressions such as "the sun sat blood red and elliptic," and these seem out of place when compared to the spartan dialogue of a father and son talking over a breakfast of eggs and coffee.

Also, McCarthy uses what is called polysyndeton, or the use of several conjunctions in close succession, especially where some might be omitted. It is a stylistic scheme used to slow down the tempo. As pointed out by others, polysyndeton is used extensively in the King James Version of the Bible. For example:

"And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark." Genesis 7:22-24

One of the best parts in the book - and exceptional writing by the way - is where he describes a dream in the middle of the book about horses running free on a plain and he does so in 18 continuous lines with no punctuation.

So, this is based on some universal themes, set in Texas and Mexico, and has some interesting and complicated prose. Once you get passed page 30 to 50, it is a novel that is hard to put down. I read most of the novel in an evening.

Highly recommended page turner: 5 stars.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful reading experience.......2007-09-09

This was one of the best reading experiences Ive ever had. What was most important to me was how true to the how people of this lifestyle actually are. I grew up in this type of atmosphere and its a big part of who I am even though it no longer defines me on a daily basis. Working with horses is a lifestyle. It what you live and breathe. McCarthy captures that. It had such an effect on me and took me back to a life I miss so much. Enjoy this book.

2 out of 5 stars All the Pretty Horses.......2007-08-06

I was disappointed in the style of this book. I had just read "Water for Elephants" and was blown away. The reviews I read lead me to this author and the above book. The story line is good however he is slow to develop it. I appreciate discriptive text however a paragraph (or more) it seems to descibbe a dry river bed is a bit much especially when there is one on every page. Alas the last 1/3 of the book will go unread. And I will search for the next W.F.E.
