There's nothing better than reading success stories of women who turned their great ideas into successful business ventures, and this book has plenty of them. I had to keep putting this book down, because new inspirations would strike, new marketing strategies floated to mind, and the motivational tone was spot-on. This should be required reading for any woman in business, no matter the level, no matter the industry. This one goes on the shelf in my office. I'll be reading it again for a booster of great stories and strategies as I launch my new product lines.

As a business and personal coach working primarily with female solopreneurs, creatives, and nonprofit/education professionals, I was familiar and impressed with the Ladies Who Launch incubator concept prior to reading the book. Nevertheless, I was so pleasantly surprised with the authors' synthesis of their own contextualized theories with concrete tips and imaginative stories, I frequently had to put the book down to record the many business building, marketing, and networking ideas it threw up for me. While the book is straightforward and accessible, it also engages with other contemporary books on female business ownership, branding, and women's ways of learning and avoids the traps of many other books in the genre that simply regurgitate information already available.

I love the tips for creating a more interesting lifestyle, based on your own personal interests and needs. Literally the breakthrough I needed.......2007-05-20
I read this book 20 years ago, while trying to learn to ride as an awkward adult. I was getting so frustrated, I couldn't find my seat and felt totally out of control in the saddle. My husband kept offering counter-productive "tips" such as, "squeeze with your legs" (to sit the trot)....All I can say is, thank Heaven for Sally Swift. Her metaphors and mental imagery were exactly what I needed. Someone with natural athletic balance would perhaps not need this (someone like my husband, who rode before he walked). However, for someone like me who has to learn it from the head down, not from the seat up, this book can be the key to a secure and comfortable seat. It is in every library, read it, then buy it if this style of teaching "speaks" to you.

Having had the priveldge of working with Sally Swift I am stuck not only by her skill , but by her kind and gentle way of dealing with everyone and everything she comes in contact with. At 94 years old when most people are seeing their lives as over, Sally sees the future as being bright. Must Have Book for Every Rider/Instructor.......2007-03-22
I participate in alot of different sports/hobbies from English/Western riding, to skiing to dog obedience/agility training to cycling and various art pursuits. If you are the type of person who ever finds yourself having difficulty following the words someone uses to express something new to you and instead find following visualization or imagery examples easier then this book will help you. For example, when I was first learning to ski countless instructors explained that I was "sitting back in my seat" or " back on my heels"... lean forward they said... "no, not like that, not from the waist, with the whole body"... finally one said "pretend you have a $100 in the front of your boot and you don't want to lose it" and Eurkeka - the light bulb went on! And so it was with riding... which is why (paraphrasing) feeling your weight in your heels like you have roots to the ground from your feet worked better for me than "keep your heels down" and so on... you get the idea. This is a great book that takes the basics and gives you some alternative ways to think about them.

If you ride, you need to read this book. So many of the modern riding techniques are based on Ms. Swift's experiences. I learned how bad my posture is and how it affects my horse when I ride. Not only did it help my riding but it helped my general posture and helps eliminate back aches. The illustrations are very enlightening.,

This is a well written book. It is, however, for a specific audience. The overall theme of the book is ways to relax and get in touch with your body. There are ways to do that, that one might not have thought. It is very basic. I'd already done 99.5 % of the stuff in there, and it wasn't working, so although the book is good, it did not work for me. This book is based on very traditional sex, very traditional sex roles, and more towards the romantic, and "making love" instead of purely physical f***ing. This book would be good for women who see alot of sex topics as taboo, and are not comfortable with their bodies, or expressing what they want out of sex.

This book was just what I was looking for. I didn't want some preachy book about how women have been opressed for so long. I didn't want someone to talk to me in a condescending way, or make assumptions about me or my partners. I wanted something concrete-a program or steps that I could follow. And this is exactly what I found! The author offers a step-by-step program, which guides you to orgasm by taking "baby steps" to get there. The program has helped my relationship immensly, and I know it will be a very rewarding journey all the way through to the last steps!

It seems that most of the sexual guides out there are geared to giving the man pleasure. In my experience that has never been a problem. The guides that are geared toward woman are usually filled with stories about muti orgasmic woman sharing their adventures. If you are a woman who really wants some clear cut advice that really works given in a friendly chatty kind of format this book is for you. It is written by a woman who had the frustation of regular unsatisfying sex herself and tells how she learned to overcome this. It was not written by some clinical doctor. The program teaches you how to be in control of your own orgasm in bed not be dependent on the abilities of your partner to have one. It's empowering. I definately recommend this book.

Of all how-to-do sex books for women, this one is the best because it focuses on the intimate relationship of women to their own sexuality. More than just giving techniques, Rachel Swift leads the reader to a very natural change in the everyday behavior, focusing on how to gain control in sexual (but it extends to more ...) situations by learning to develop the ability to satisfy oneself and to get familiar with one's own fantasies.

Between the two of us, my wife and I have looked at 30 or so books on parenting and read about 10 or so.
This is *the* best book on parenting we've ever seen.
She gets the theory right in terms of "intrinsic consequences" rather than "extrinsic punishment/reward" as Alphie Kohn describes so well in "Punished by Rewards. But she goes much further by providing a lot of real-world insight and examples that really ring true. She's also admits that she's had bad parenting moments. That helps to put the reader at ease.
Getting it Right with Children.......2005-09-16
As an early childhood specialist and an educator for 34 years, this book finally "gets it right" on how to "disciple" or teach children. Madelyn Swift scores an A+ on uncovering the problems with the "fad" behavior modification techniques such as "assertive discipline." Best of all she covers how to praise, how to take "love and logic" a step further, and how to separate "rewards" (bad) from celebrations (good). Anyone with children or in education will find this book full of great philosophy and down to earth suggestions for everyday "discipling."
Getting it Right with Children.......2000-03-23
Before reading this book, I would have told you that nothing I do seems to make a difference in the behavior of my children. I found myself telling other parents that I parented in two ways: threats & bribery. I found myself rewarding my kids for behavior that they should already be doing on their own and having to increase those rewards as they aged or just got smarter to the system. Madelyn Swift's book has given me a better way to discipline and now my children do listen. There are no more rewards or threats of punishment. There are disciplinary consequences. My children know that I mean what I say and trust that I will follow through. I have learned to truly discipline them to make them the best adults that they can be. There is a reduction in the stress and anger in our family. More importantly, I have come to enjoy my children much more and no longer feel angry at them when they misbehave. You don't walk away feeling guilty for not doing what the "experts" say should be done but excited to know that you can make a difference in the lives of your children. There are plenty of FULL COLOR book cover photos here to help you in collecting boys series books from the past. This includes cover variations of every Hardy Boys book published between 1927 and 1980. Tom Swift Jr., Chip Hilton, & Mark Tidd are also well represented.
There are also examples of covers from many other series, both forgotten to well known. Examples of these range from Dave Porter, to The Rover Boys, Ken Holt, Biff Brewster, Tom Quest, & Rick Brant. Complete book lists are included for 37 boys series.

Another great book from John Axe!! I wouldn't want to be without my The Secret of Collecting Girls' Series Books by John, and now he has given us another great gift in All About Collecting Boys' Series Books. This book is packed with information about some of the most poplar boys series including the Hardy Boys, Tom Swift, Ted Scott, and more.
Along with the information, the book is beautifully done with photographs of the various cover arts. As I stated in the Girls' Series book review, the book is worth it for the photographs alone.

Due to the timing of its publication, Unfit for Command could be dismissed as the sort of controversial, loaded book typical in a presidential election year: Either courageous and necessary, or untruthful and malicious, depending on one's political point of view. Filled with interviews of men who served in Vietnam at the same time as John Kerry, the book poses the following question: "Why do an overwhelming majority of those who commanded or served with John Kerry oppose him?" (Note that the issue of "service" has sparked investigation into its definition--in other words, just how close was the interaction between Kerry and those cited in the book during Kerry's Vietnam tour of duty?) The charges leveled against Kerry in this book are severe and include filing false operating reports; lobbying for and receiving three Purple Hearts for minor wounds, two of which were self-inflicted; receiving a Silver Star under false pretenses; offering false confessions of bogus war crimes in both print and testimony; and recklessness in the field, including the burning of a village without cause or direct order. The book also claims that Kerry left Vietnam after serving just four months instead of the usual one year tour and that he returned home and accused his fellow soldiers of atrocities without offering any evidence, endangering POWs in the process. It is debatable whether the book will change any minds, or votes. Instead, readers will likely reach one of two conclusions: Either John Kerry grossly misrepresented his military service or the authors are spinning the interviews that they conducted for ulterior motives. There is a third option, however; readers will further investigate both sides of the debate, and by doing so, may reach conclusions independent of partisan extremes. --Brian Neff

A Good Read Before the 2004 Election.......2007-03-09
I'm glad I read this book before the 2004 election. I'm a Vietnam era vet, but I had forgotten many of the events covered in this book. It was eye-opening to realize that the guy most of us thought of as a traitor back then, is now pawning himself off as a war hero and presidential material. It was good to see Mr. Kerry pay for the sins of his youth.

God Bless Swift Boat. This book was a blessing when it came out, and it truly is a testament to this "man's" character today as it was then. As Kerry, who still can't come to terms with the fact that America simply did not want his sorry excuse for a life to lead this fine country, tries to figure out how to dig himself out of the hole in which he has dug himself by stating that the men and women of our nation's Armed Services (myself included, as I am a Captain in the USMC) are uneducated nitwits "stuck in Iraq,"....well, there is nothing more relevant than this treatise to serve as an example why this piece of garbage should never have been, nor should ever be, our Commander in Chief. It is clear that his contempt of the men and women of the military runs deep, just as deep as it did when he returned from Vietnam and began holding hands with Hanoi Jane.
I take great issue with his recent comments. Above all else that this so-called "man" represents and claims to represent, the bottom line is that he is a bonafide loser. He can't get past that, nor accept it. To degrade our nation's finest in the manner he did is simply atrocious, above and beyond being outright incorrect. Sure, it was a "joke" that went wrong. Whatever you say Johnny boy. It was clear to all what you meant and, more importantly, what you actually SAID.
But, I must heartily shake your hand for one thing. The one thing you seem to have accomplished is that you single-handedly set the Dems back even further for the upcoming election, just days away. Great job. Leave it to Kerry to do such a job. You know you've done wrong when you have the likes of Billy and Hilly rushing in to beg you to apologize...yet even still, you chose not to do so publicly, but simply, coward that you are, post a little note on your website. Pathetic. Thank GOD this trash was so devastingly beaten and never had a chance. He never will. He simply cannot see what lies right beneath him, and trips over his own feet simply by being the idiot that he is. He's an arrogant, petty, stupid, whining, petulant little man, who will be resigned to the footnotes of history as nothing more than the penultimate loser of a bid to the White House.

I have had the good fortune to get to know Sally Swift and I can say first hand that she leads a Centered Life. Her books have been life changing for thousands and thousands of people. Ever once in a while someone rights a negative review but it is the person not the material that is off base. They haven't allowed Sally's work to work within themselves. Sally gets hundreds of thank you notes from people all over the world thanking her for her work.Sports people other than horse people find her work amazing. If you haven't already read her books hurry and order them. At 94 Sally is actively involved in making a difference. I love her first book, and highly recommend both books to my students. This book has the same easy to understand format. Sally breaks down how our bodies function when we are riding. I really like the exercises that she uses on the ground. I frequently use the "monkey position" with my students. It really helps to explain use of the hip joint. I also find the "monkey position" helpful when introducing a student to the sitting trot. I cannot say enough awesome things about this book. I also do not fully agree with the first review. This book really shows a rider how their body affects the horse, regardless of your learning styles. The illustrations and pictures are very clear and easy to understand. They have helped many of my students to really gain perspective on how every little movement, or tense muscle affects the horse in some way. I feel that every rider should have a copy of both Centered Riding, and Centered Riding 2 Further Exploration. I hope that this review is helpful.
Still drives me spare - 'Creative' types will love it........2005-11-11
If you aren't a fan of Sally Swift's methods (analogies and metaphors) and the first book drove you to despair this second one is slightly better. There are some helpful texts and photos but she is still my least favourite writer. I simply find that I cannot learn from her teaching style and her descriptions do nothing to help me to understand what I must DO. Of course, AFTER I have learned something (on my own) I can often relate what I feel to what she describes but because I am unable to transfer her descriptions initially I am unable to LEARN to ride from her books.
You MUST know your learning style before buying Sally Swift - if 'grow like a tree' doesn't help you with your riding, avoid her like the plague. If on the other hand you have the type of brain that responds well to these sorts of descriptions, dancers\actors etc who can understand what their bodies need to do in response to imagery - then buy her books and avoid the others who use more mechanistic descriptions.

Sally Swift proved to be an excellent teacher in her last book, and she maintains the title throughout the second edition. I find the illustrations and analogies to be excellent for my own use as well as teaching others. So many concepts are broken down and compared to every day events and mechanical workings that they are almost impossible to forget. Sally helps you understand the mechanincs of your own body as well as your horse's and helps us understand why our instructors tell us to do the things they do.

I read this book in two days! Travis Roy is an incredible person who has lived through a tragic experience. I applaud him for setting up a foundation to help other people with spinal cord injuries. As a teacher, I would love to have him speak at my school!

Initially I was drawn to this book because it involved my passion, hockey. But Travis' story moved me deeply. Once I started reading this book I could not put it down. I was really interested in the affect his accident would have on his relationship with his girlfriend and I was rooting for them to stay together. I'll be honest I'm pretty bummed things didn't work out between them. But this was a great story of a very inspirational person. It truly made me want to make a contribution to his foundation which I plan on doing. I would recommend this book to anyone not just fans of hockey. Good Luck in the future Trav!
Eleven Seconds review.......2006-06-01
In Eleven Seconds, a story about a young man at the age of twenty-one living life and one event happens to change it all. Playing in his first collegiate game of hockey, Travis Roy crashed the corner after a dump in, tripped, fell, and broke his fourth vertebrae and becomes paralyzed from his neck down. This single event changes the way he and his family act towards each other. The story goes through his amazing recovery and the heart and determination he had. The author portrays Travis Roy as a hero to those that are in deep pain or trouble. He accomplishes this by showing the good and bad times in his recovery stages. After a few months at the hospital, Travis Roy wants to get back into the world and show that this freak accident will not keep him down. He returns to college and tries to become a normal student, but this is impossible because he has become a well-known person due to the accident. The grit and determination of Mr. Roy and his family members through the hard times to get to a level of peace and acceptance of what has happend is amazing. This story makes you, the reader, feel that you just need to make the best of the hand that is dealt and that if anything goes wrong you just have to deal with it and make the best of the situation. Eleven Seconds is a great book and should be read by all.
Reading this brought that night back.......2006-04-22
On Oct. 20, 1995, two of my friends and I gleefully took our seats in Walter Brown arena. We'd saved up the money to purchase season tickets (huge money for undergraduates), and couldn't wait to see the triple crown banner be raised. The beginning of the night was all of the heartpounding celebration it could be.
And then only a short time later, that all changed--That night of joy became one of profound sadness as we watched a (then) unknown freshman player fall to the ice, motionless. It was the first and only time I've personally witnessed someone injured so severely.
Since that night, I've kept up from time to time to see what Travis is doing, how he's doing, and am constantly amazed at how he's fighting. He is an inspiration, and his book should be on anyone's reading list.
Worth More Than 11Sec........2006-04-18
If your looking for a book that lets you get into the world of college hockey this is it. Its a heart felt story of a kid who is a great hockey player and dreams of playing for the University of Boston. He does so and his dreams come true when he finally hits the ice. However he only sees 11 seconds of ice time. He checks a player in the boards and breaks his neck, his whole college career ends in just 11 sec of ice time. The rest of the story tells about his life after hockey as a former player now confined to a wheelchair. It goes into detail about how his family must change, his girlfriend must change and how he must change all due to an accident. The book is not only a good ready, but also an easy read. I found that is was hard to put this down even for a min. I have to admit as a I guy I try not to show emotion, but there are times while reading this book that I did get a tear or two in my eyes. The book makes you think and also you will come to love this kid when you are done reading. I know I have!!!!
