Love &Sadness all in one.......2007-09-16
It must be so hard for some of the offspring of Stars to front their demons. I do believe these two stars loved greatly but coming from different backgrounds was always going to be difficult.Their working days were completely opposite which had to cause friction. However I have passed this book around for others to enjoy. Unfortunately Sandra's addiction to alcohol would have been difficult for Bobby as he did not like this scene. His problems lay elsewhere. Nonetheless two great talents produced a loving son. Great read.

This book is a touching recollection of the glorious, yet shattered lives of Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin, the Dream Lovers of the title who were entertainment superstars during the late 50s and 60s. Their son Dodd along with his co-writer Maxine Paetro did a terrific job in telling his family's heartbreaking story by getting input from many of the people closest to his parents. I would also recommend picking up the DVD of Bobby's last TV show in 73 "Mack is Back" along with reading Dream Lovers. They go well together.

I read this book cover to cover in a day. From a son's perspective, it was hard to see the progressive decline in his parent's lives through his eyes. Still, I believe it was told with as much objectivity as he could muster. I'm still fascinated with the Darrin/Dee relationship after all these years.

I fill Dodd Darin wrote a very tragic and truthful story of both of his parents. I felt he captured their inner feelings of joy and of heartbreak. He also showed his love for both. I have and would recommend this book to others
Dream Lovers.......2007-02-07
Loved this book. It will make for another interesting movie about these two lovers whom after they met were forever joined together solidified even more by their son. Tragic love story and had it not been for Bobby's short time on earth I am sure they would have worked it out and stayed together forever.
I cannot help but feel for Dodd who somehow hoped that his parents could have worked it out. As the son of two wonderful icons, he showed us the turmoil in their lives.
I thank Dodd for sharing his pain as well as his happy times with his parents though short lived.

This book was so good I had to buy one to put back in the church library because I didn't want to give theirs back. It is one of the few books I have read cover to cover and didn't want to end.

Shattered Dreams is a helpful diagnosis of what may really be happening when our dreams are shattered. However, it comes across as a one-size-fits-all model. God has many purposes for allowing dreams to be shattered. Read Crabb to learn one such purpose, but realize that others exist.

I was so struck by this book that I bought it for all of my friends at Christmas. Finally, a Christian auther is writing truthfully about life. It goes deeper than most other books and has fine-tuned my theology and changed my life. It's a must read.

The best of the Darin bios.......2006-01-06
Of all the Darin bios this one is my favorite. Darin and Dee's son Dodd, along with his collaborator, did a lot right and really fleshed out both people so that I felt like I had some idea what they were like. I also felt like I got to know Dodd, and he's a man any two parents would be proud of. He was brave and honest in his portrayal of his parents, and in approaching some estranged relatives and friends for their input.
My only regret is that Dee had the advantage of going through the book and requesting changes because she felt it was too hard on her. These changes were then made in accordance with her wishes. Darin had no such editorial advantage since he was long dead when it was written. So it feels like Dodd's bending over backward (tho' understandably given that his mom's feelings were at stake) to be accomodating to Dee, while (also understandably) unable to do the same for Bobby.
But a great dual bio of two fascinating and appealing stars: one damaged physically and doomed to a short life, and one damaged emotionally and unable to enjoy her longer life.

The recent PBS documentary ("Bobby Darin-Beyond the Song") caught my attention and really grabbed me. I grew up in the 60's but had never paid much attention to music- and even hated some of the songs he sang. But even as I hated the songs I became mesmerized watching him. So I bought this little book and couldn't put it down. The authors start at the very beginning of Darin's and Dee's lives, making me feel like I was living each heart-breaking day and year with them. And watching Darin's life as it slowly unfolded made me slowly realize what a total genius he was, and made me realize how UTTERLY ORDINARY I am! How does one person become so completely talented that it is nothing short of frightening, and I exhibit not the slightest bit of creativity! So dramatic and yet too routine for a TV soap opera, it is heart-wrenching that Darin idolized but never saw the man he thought was his father, and found out very late in his too short life that his "sister" was actually his mother, his "mother" was actually his grandmother, and his "father" was not his father. He died only suspecting who his father actually was but never really knowing. But more upsetting to me is that in the United States in the 1970's no one could save this man's life when surely he could have been easily saved. He suffered physical pain that the book had me believing I was experiencing, and worst of all: he suffered alone. Everyone- including doctors who should have known better- told him there was nothing wrong with him. His physical ailments naturally made him difficult to be with and even those closest to him were driven away. This "brash," "cocky" man who gave us so much talent and enjoyment and ways to escape our troubles lived his last years terrified and feeling very much alone. What was also striking about this is that he had life-long friends who were more passionately in love with him than they were with almost anyone else- even when they were "on the outs" with him (How many of us have friends who would cry when speaking about us twenty years after our deaths?). But ultimately for various reasons, few of them were there for him. This magnificient talent who had everything- wealth, fame, the adulation of friends and strangers, genius, entourages- truly died alone and terrified- the same way we "ordinary" people fear passing.
This book left me more sad for and more concerned about strangers than I usually am for people I know, but it also left me truly heartened that the subjects' son seems to be doing so well and is so happy. His father would be as proud of him as he is of his parents, and his mother should rest assured that he will continue caring for her. He seems to be the type of son that should not only make a mother proud of him, but of herself- despite the low self-esteem she seems to have, she clearly did something very right when she raised him.
For an in-depth review, THIS IS DARIN AND DEE!!.......1998-01-08
For anyone interested in the lives of America's dream couple, this is the definitive collection. From Dees troubled childhood, her early rise to fame, a practicly unknown side of Darin as well as Dee through thier marriage, to Dees collapse and hints of a comback. The only thing left out is Dees recounts of the end of the marriage other then a brief "why" it happened. Darin's life is presented here in the most concentrated, interview-laden publication. Every aspect of his career and life are exhamined with a much-due artist respect tone. The plus here is a section of "what if's" are explored. The structure of the book is a new approach with chapters vollying back and forth in chronoligical order. An interesting ending with Dodd Darin's own little life dramas being raised a Hollywood teen. For Dee fans, this shows the price of fame. For us Darin fanatics, this shows the "why" of fame.Why do they do it? A must have for 50's/60's fans, Darin/Dee fans, biography fans, music fans, or anyone who's looking to open a new door.

Dreams of pregnancy include the expectation that nine months of waiting will end with a joyous event. But, each year, a "shattered dream" occurs for thousands of couples who receive the news that their child will have a disabling condition severe enough that they may question if they are the best parents for their child. Societal expectation is that parents will raise their child or, if the condition of the child is detected prenatally, abortion is offered as an alternative. Parents who explore other options face scrutiny and, sometimes, condemnation--"lonely choices." Joanne Finnegan shares her personal experience and that of several families she interviewed who, like herself, explored options other than raising their child with a disability. Parents express with candor the overwhelming pain they felt when receiving "the news," the frustration when searching for options, the "no-win" feeling of decision making, the resolve with a final decision, and finally, life after the decision. Parent quotes also address issues such as spiritual dilemmas and interactions with friends, family, their other children, and medical professionals. Words of advice for new parents include how to build support systems and gather information, how to search for an adoptive family, and arranging the details of communication between adoptive and birth parents. Written as a gift for other parents to help them cope with the pain and loneliness of decision making, this book will also be a valuable resource for medical professionals, adoption and social workers, counselors and spiritual advisors, and friends and family of the parents. It is a helpful as well as a deeply therapeutic book, providing a strong lesson in how to manage during this stressful time, from receiving "the news" about the baby's condition and prognosis, to weighing the factors involved in the various decisions. Should one take the baby home from the hospital? If not home, then where? Foster care, respite care, guardianship, and other forms of substitute care are mentioned. The author also examines decisions about finances and support services, family issues, finalizing an adoption plan, living with the decision, regrets, and future pregnancies.

Good read, but not Blind Your Ponies.......2007-08-03
I bought this book as I very much loved Blind Your Ponies. This book was a good read, but not as powerful as Ponies.
I wish Mr. Gordon hadn't used the titles of songs so much as it was jarring, Sonny Hollister may have been a star on the pages, but the references to Carefree Highway, Wichita Line Man etc brought to mind the singers that had those songs as hits. Sonny's comeback and machinations in California were unnecessary as there was a richness in the life he could have chosen in Montana. He was building a better life in Montana with the characters in Montana and felt the story could have been more powerful then the Sonny needing to be a star again story line. The young girl/older man story line was tired. Sally deserved better for her character.
I loved the Jesse/Guardian story line. Hezakaih was a wonderful character and could have been larger in the story. The peripheral characters like Rock and Butch could have been fleshed out more.
It's still a good read, but not the great read Blind Your Ponies was.

Stanley Gordon West does it again! I love his writing style, and the mix of emotions and surpises sewn into the fabric of his stories. I can hardly wait for his next book.

I really enjoyed this book. I found this author in the Minnesota section at the book store. The first book written by Stanley Gordon West that I read was "Blind Your Ponies." It is my all-time favorite book. I have kept it so that I can read it over and over again. I would rate this book right up there with Blind Your Ponies. I enjoy everything written by Stanley Gordon West.

This is the latest book from Stanley Gordon West, once again it's a "can't put down" book. Mr. West has a style of writing that immediately pulls you into the book. As the novel progresses there are more twists and turns than you ever expect and that keep you hooked until the very end. I can hardly wait for him to write another book - keep the midnight fires burning Stanley!

Disturbingly Real.......2000-05-16
Long, a counselor at a juvenile detention center in California, discusses the rise of Viet Namese gangs across the US. The book is essentially a lengthy illustration essay that employs narrative accounts of numerous adolescents and their families. Long provides through his firsthand experience, a frightening but sympathetic glimpse at one of the untold results of the war that turned a generation upside down. It is a story filled with cruelty and abandonment on both an individual and a national level. Perhaps the most valuable component of this study is the actual dialogue between Long and his wards. Long is engaging and wise, and the words of his "clients" are often terrifying and explicit.
One of the most insighful books I've ever read........1998-09-16
The author not only addressed the problem, but also showed how he helps solve it. He shows the pain these youth go through so poignantly. I work with vietnamese refugee youth and this book taught me so much in how the vietnamese family works and how to adress certain problems. this is probably the most down to earth book i've ever read. It's definatly easy to read too.

This book does a superb job of placing the legal decisions of the Civil War era within the complex and exciting times in which they took place. Samuel Freeman Miller is a fascinating and important figure.
A splendid biography.......2004-07-21
The appointment of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Freeman Miller by President Lincoln was perhaps his best decision before the Civil War. Miller's life story is well written by Dr. Ross and perhaps will be the definitive study of the man for generations to come.
Ross provides new insights into Supreme Court cases, such as the Slaughter House rulings and other important judicial issues of the Civil War and Reconstruction. But perhaps what is Ross's finest work is his ability to articulate Miller's character. The author's background on the Justice fully prepared the reader for understanding why Miller voted on a certain issue. In doing so, the reader can clearly comprehend the various court decisions of that era.
Clearly, the judicial system of the Civil War is one of the few areas of that time period with insufficient attention. Ross's book will hopefully ignite a spark to this unknown subject of American history.
More than a biography of Miller.......2003-12-16
Justice of Shattered Dreams is a well-balanced blend of history, law, economics and biography. The author provides a succinct and well-written summary of such topics as popular sovereignty, the tension over the Kansas/Nebraska issue, the recalcitrance of the South during Reconstruction, and the legal battles between capitalist bondholders and small town populists. Ross, who has a J.D. from Duke, provides insightful legal summaries of Dred Scott, Ex Parte Merryman, the Prize cases, Ex parte Milligan, the Legal Tender cases, as well as the Slaughterhouse cases for which Miller is most remembered. Ross's analysis of Ex Parte Milligan resonates today vis-a-vis the legal arguments over the status of the internees at Guantanamo Bay. There is just enough legal analysis to explain the theory of the decisions without overpowering the non-lawyer reader, and just enough facts to convey the essence of the case and its background.
The book is interesting because it is not a true biography of a Supreme Court justice. It blends the economic background and the societal tensions that were present during Miller's lifetime. Additionally, Ross makes some very good points on Reconstruction and reinforces why Reconstruction, in some ways, was just as decisive as slavery in fracturing the country - a legacy that continues today much to the dismay of the modern Democratic party. Ross's analysis of how railroads and railroad bridges destroyed the small western towns is very informative; again, Ross provides a good, cogent synopsis of an economic issue. Overall, this is an interesting and informative book that ties together divergent strands of history and presents a cohesive snapshot of our country between the 1850's and 1870's.

Shattered Dreams: A Beautiful, Well-Written Book.......2007-10-17
As an former LDS woman myself who was raised in the LDS church, this book was edifying to me to read stories of women who escaped the brainwashing that the church (both LDS and FLDS) did and still does, particularly to women. This book had real-life stories of the struggle and hardship of practicing polygamy in the modern world. It was funny, honest, horrifying and sad all at the same time, what a beautifully written piece of text. If you want to read a book that will inspire you to understand polygamy better and why people stay in it for so long, THIS is the book for you to read. I am so proud of Irene Spencer (the author) for being brave enough to share her story. Her story was the BEST presentation of the true roots of Mormonism that I have ever read. As a former Mormon, who is not interested in slandering the church, but rather just telling the truth, I can tell you: this book will tell you everything you've ever wanted to know about the real hardships that Fundamentalist and regular mormon women have to face. I think modern day practicing LDS members would enjoy reading this just as much as any non-mormon or ex-mormon. This book is not written to slam the LDS church and it doesn't,it just tells of Irene's life story as a polygamist's wife.
An interesting read.......2007-10-17
SHATTERED DREAMS is a interesting read. It tells of this womans horrible life growning up in a polygamist colony. I feel sorry for her and her family believing this is what the Mormon faith and God wanted. I am a mormon and their beliefs are far from the Mormon"s belief. There were a few years where the church praticed polygamy. When a law passed against it they no longer praticed it. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, or Mormon's do NOT believe in this nor do they pratice it.
Gripping.......2007-10-15
I agree with the other reviewers. Spencer is a talented writter. The included pictures are amazing! All those kids! For another take on polygamy, you might also like "His Favorite Wife", written by Irene's "sister-wife" Susan Ray Schmidt (Irene was wife number two, Susan was number six). It's sheds a different light on this polygamist's family life.
Shattered but not broken..........2007-10-13
Shattered Dreams is very engaging and well-written. Irene Spencer really makes you feel the poverty, loneliness, and despair that she suffered as a plural wife, but she is also a survivor - she came out of polygamy with her mind intact. She doesn't really flesh out Verlan's character or that of the other wives(she focuses more on what was happening with her own immediate family - herself and her children). Read His Favorite Wife by Susan Ray Schmidt (with whom Irene Spencer shared a husband) for more info on the other wives and what was happening within the polygamist group. I read Schmidt's book first and it's really fascinating to read about Verlan LeBaron's family from another point of view.

This autobiography is heartfelt, beautiful, touching and nonjudgemental. It gives a clear and honost view of the trials and sacrifice that Irene Spencer had to endure and how she eventually gains peace within her life.

A Great Book If You've Read 'The Crow'.......2004-05-10
This is a good addition to 'The Crow'. However I did find some of the stories a little tedious and one or two just plain boring, and that is why it only gets 4 stars. Perhaps I found these less good because they weren't directly about The Crow, and more realted to the theme of revenge and death.
But a poem by Henry Rollins, and 'Spooky Codeine And he Dead Man' by O'Barr himself, and 'Twice By Fire' by Ramsey Campbell, this book gains its four stars, plus th great works by other writers, too many of which there are to mention.
I advise you buy 'The Crow' before this book, as a lot of the stories refer to things in 'The Crow'.
A good book for fans of The Crow and James O'Barr, as well as fans of dark fantasy/horror.

This is worth your time if you like The Crow movies or the graphic novel. There are many good stories in this volume. There is also some good poetry and some good art throughout the book. There is even a good Eric Draven story somewhere in the volume.
You will really like this book if you like The Crow or dark poetry. It's worth your time.

A book comemorating death? Would one buy something as such and still be rendered a person of sanity? The answer is yes on both accounts. The book The Crow: Shattered Lives and Broken Dreams is just that. Edited by the creator, the book takes you on numerous adventures scribed by different writers on the mythos of the crow. Most of the stories deal with the same contextual theme of wrongful death, sadness and a way of making things better where things have gone wrong. The book succeeds in a number of aspects and truly brings out the vengeful spirit that is the Crow. Though the character was created in the early 80s, it has grown to fame by the release of two successful movies, one in which was immortalized by the late Brandon Lee. One might ask what is the difference between The Crow and the Marvel comic character, the Ghost Rider, which also serves as a vengeful spirit. While the latter seeks vengeance for things gone wrong, the former has the special attribute that it can be anyone or even anything that can pick the mantle of the Crow. Anyone can become his or her own special spirit of retribution.
Most of the stories and poetry are well-written though some are just too far fetched to be taken seriously, a number of stories delve more into fantasy than your regular fiction. A number of stories, however, capture your mind and heart from the instance you read them. Stories that traverse the here and now. On how things should have been, but aren't. James O'Barr's piece, "Spooky, Codeine and the Dead Man" is a perfect example of such. Another story would be "Moving Toward the Light" by Rick R. Reed, a though-provoking piece about pain and hurt. The story is extremely graphical and can truly touch the reader and make him witness first hand the descriptive pungent exploitation the character experiences. The story makes you think and wonder, can this truly happen in a world of today, and the answer to that painful question is an excruciating yes.
The book is a must read for not only horror fans, but those who truly believe that there are outside forces controlling the paths each one of us takes, a power that can right where things have gone wrong, horribly wrong.
