Book Description
Communication between couples has been dissected in thousands of books and articles, so why does it remain the number one marriage problem? "Because," says Dr. Emerson Eggerichs, "most spouses don't know that they speak two different languages. They are sending each other messages in 'code,' but they won't crack that code until they see that she listens to hear the language of love and he listens to hear the language of respect." Dr. Eggerichs' best-selling book, Love and Respect, launched a revolution in how couples relate to each other based on Ephesians 5:33: "The husband must love his wife . . . and the wife must respect her husband." In Cracking the Communication Code he shows couples how to speak each other's distinctly different language-respect for him, love for her. The result is mutual understanding and a successful, godly marriage.
Customer Reviews:
Very good book, but a bit long-winded.......2007-06-27
I read Emerson's previous book "Love And Respect" 7 times, just because it was so good and it touched my heart deeply. The principles in his book are so profound and important that it was no surprise that Emerson decided to write a follow-up book called "Cracking the Communication Code: The Secret to Speaking Your Mate's Language". The material in this book goes into great detail about the inner workings of conflict and Emerson picks apart typical marital arguments and shows the reader exactly the dynamics that are at play.
I give this book 4 stars instead of 5 because it is rather long-winded in places and because this book comes across to me as Emerson's exhaustive exposition and commentary on the core principles and crux of the "Love And Respect" book. In other words, there isn't a lot of NEW material.
Having said that, I don't want to discourage anyone from reading this book. If you haven't read either of these two books, then I'd suggest the "Love And Respect" book first, but if you buy this one, you get a "mini-Love And Respect" recap "book-within-a-book" in the first few chapters.
Good job Emerson! I would love to attend one of your conferences when you are in my area!
Inspiring book........2007-05-12
After reading the book, I realize that marriage is a spiritual path. Marriage is a relationship that tests me to reach a higher spiritual plane and to connect with God. I really liked Emerson's prayer of commitment. I don't normally buy Christian books and I had to "decode" a few things for myself to so I could relate to it, but after reading it, I have more appreciation for the nature of man and the nature of woman and how to respect and appreciate our differences. I also have more appreciation for the teachings of Jesus. Thank you Emerson!
Eye Opening Reading.......2007-04-11
I've not read the entire book yet, but am anxious to do so. This, in my opinion, is a must read for every couple wanting to strengthen their marriage. Good basic "stuff" we all need to know.
More of the same...wordy.......2007-02-22
More of the same... I would stop at Love and Respect, the first book. This book is too wordy and seems to go nowhere. No real new information. I sold it back right after I bought it, but I kept Love & Respect. Don't bother.
WOW.......2007-01-06
WOW! This book is one of the best books I have ever read. The part on T-U-F-T-S is so insightful. Dr. E helped me to decipher what my spouse is really saying to me. I learned how to speak her distinct different language---"love" for her, "respect" for me---building mutual understanding, and enjoying a successful, godly marriage!!!!
Book Description
To Sir Gideon Landor, an English naval prisoner, Delphine Dalgleish is a Parisian trifle, as pretty-and as useless-as a porcelain doll, who would think nothing of turning him over to the French legion. To Delphine Dalgleish, he's an ice-cool double agent whom she despises for his treachery.
But these two are about to find out how wrong first impressions can be. In the midst of the Peninsular War, Sir Gideon has orders to crack the Grand Paris Cypher, a code created for Napoleon. Meanwhile the emperor himself sends Delphine on a delicate espionage mission to London. Gideon and Delphine may manage to defend their dangerous secrets, but not their hearts. As passion takes hold, it is time to decipher their own complex code of love.
Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite novels!.......2007-01-04
I could not put this book down! Cheryl Sawyer truly makes Gideon and Delphine come alive within the pages. I love the backdrop of the Napoleon story and the excitement of the spy plot. Most of all, though, the romance and love between Delphine and Gideon was so real and touching. I highly recommend this book!...but make sure that you have time to spare because you'll get little else done until you finish it!
wonderful historical romance.......2006-05-03
English naval officer Sir Gideon Landor holds the treacherous Delphine Dalgeish responsible for his capture by the French legion. She, on the other hand, believes that Gideon deserved what he got as she handed over a contemptible double agent. Taken to the French island of Mauritius, Gideon manages to escape.
The French assign Delphine to work in London obtaining information from the loose lips English aristocracy. At the same time Gideon is back home seeking to uncover Napoleon's secret message code. They see each other at galas and though both try to avoid the other, the attraction is like a moth to a fire that neither can prevent. Still each has a mission to accomplish and a loyalty to differing governments at war.
Regency romance fans obtain a fantastic treat with Cheryl Sawyer's complex love vs. war thriller. The story line is filled with action but the center that holds the tale together is the relationship between the Englishman and Frenchwoman, both loyal to their respective countries. Gideon and Delphine seem genuine as they struggle with attraction that leads to love vs. allegiance and honor. THE CODE OF LOVE is a wonderful historical romance.

GameShark Pocket Power Guide, 5th Edition : From Code Boy with Love was a great book. It contained GameShark codes for all kinds of systems. The only bad thing was the slight lack of games. Never the less, GameShark Pocket Power Guide, 5th Edition : From Code Boy with Love is a great book.

Customer Reviews:
My Favorite Party Favor Ever.......2006-11-11
This book is hilarious! I have been out of the dating scene for years but each and every page brings back a memory that leaves me laughing out loud. My husband and I bring it out every time we have friends over and pass it around. Everyone has his/her own Barcode story.
I loved it. I hated it........2006-11-10
PENS ENVY [penz en-vee]. n. The green-eyed fury that you haven't either the wit or the perception of the authors of this hilarious definitions book.
witty.......2006-11-06
This book had me laughing out loud. I plan to give a copy to friends because everybody needs to reminiscence and laugh about the dating and single days. So cleverly written.
If I'd Only Known Then ..........2006-11-05
If you ask me, Bar Code has come 20 years too late. If I'd only known back in my single days to watch out for my Tammy tendencies, I surely would have done better at Red Rover. Instead, I spent too much time running Memory Laps, Pair-a-Scoping, and naively falling for those guys with Altered Egos, who were only interested in the Pammys anyway. Fortunately, I was completely on-target about my husband's Premarital Specs, so now I'm sleeping in Fuddy Duds, no longer worried about Down Thighzing. Still, this hilarious little guide has helped me bring closure to all those haunting memories of my dating past, and I bet it will do the same for all those 40-and 50-somethings who still CAN'T BELIEVE we wore that, said that, or did that way back when. This year I'll be putting Bar Code in the Christmas stockings of all my still- or newly-single friends. It's my duty to save them from all those Federlines out there ... and from themselves.
Transcends Generations!.......2006-11-02
I've been out of the scene for a while and trust me, this book is still great fun! Everyone can relate to these hilarious terms if they've ever dated in college and beyond. And amazingly, it's already catching on! I heard the term "updating" used in the Barcode context just a few weeks ago and the ultra-trendy user admitted to sneaking lingo from the book. I'm giving a copy to all my friends for Christmas to help them remember half the things they wish they could forget!

Works Like Magic.......2007-01-31
I had this book last 1998. Within a year, I got married. I recommended this to my single friends and believe it or not, they also got married within a year after having this book. There is something in this book that makes you become attractive from within yourself. It sounds incredible but it's true.
What I want is Normal after all?.......2001-03-27
This book provides the comfort of knowing what other men want in women and what other women want in men. It might help single people searching for someone who is ready, willing and able to love in return. For married men, it reveals why your wife is so disappointed and frustrated, and offers hope at satisfying the needs she can't and won't express. Best of all it could help men and women express and explain their unmet needs, so that lovers have a better chance to meet those needs.
Remarkable insights into relationships.......1999-04-28
Janet shows remarkable insights into girls' and guys' turn ons and turn offs and solid, realistic views and advice on how to find and keep your soul mate -- I'm ordering eight more copies for friends.
Real answers for real questions.......1997-01-22
Most (if not all) of the current crop of "relationship" books rely upon catchy techniques which are thinly veiled lessons in manipulation and deceipt...not exactly what you would want to base a long-term relationship on. "Cracking The Love Code" is a realistic, common-sense guide to honestly understanding, communicating, and getting what we all really want and need. Not just for lonely singles, this wonderful book is sure to enrich any relationship, whether it has been going on for two days or two decades. If I'd had this book twenty years ago, I might have never gone through my divorce. As it is, it has sweetened the life I share with the woman I love, and left both of us infinitely happier. Three cheers for Janet O'Neal!

Self-Help for Smarties is for people ready to throw away all those self-help books on weight loss, love relationships, career and parenting that never worked. Using examples from real people and real situations, Dr. Gootnick unlocks the secret codes for us to achieve real success in those areas. How many times in your life have you said or thought, 'If only' you had said or done something differently? he writes. As a psychiatrist I listen to people's stories of failure and frustration all the time. It's my job to ferret out what is behind the feelings of guilt and resentment so often expressed in my office, and then figure out how to help people change lifelong, undermining patterns. . . . People really do want to change, some desperately. Self-Help for Smarties is a hands-on guide that offers practical tools to make those changes: simple explanations and specific self assessments to burst through chains of suppressed guilt andresentment that cause the self-defeating behaviors. Dr. Gootnick helps us understand how early life experiences create mind-sets that influence what we do and how we think about and react to situationstoday. He then shows us how to change our thinking to effectively lose weight, to succeed in love relationships and our careers and to be better parents. A feature that makes the book easy to use are the charts that identify specific behaviors and that allow us to look up our personal problem and see at a glance how it originated and how we may have responded to it. Dr. IRWIN GOOTNICK, acclaimed author of Why You Behave in Ways You Hate, has a private psychiatric practice in San Francisco. He has appeared on Oprah and other major national media.

Customer Reviews:
Should be in every household!.......2006-03-04
This type of book needs to be in every household throughout the world not just the country!
Much Needed .......2005-01-28
Mark Bryan is my husband's cousin. I saw him on Oprah talking about his book and had to get it. However, it was out of stock. Mark sent me an autographed copy and I read it in a day. It was so helpful to me to learn to deal with some members of my own family, but more importantly with my husband's family. Now that I have the truth on where my husband "comes from", it is easier for me to understand how and why he thinks the way he does...that also goes for the rest of his immediate family. I am going to have my husband read this to help him work out his problems with his parents.
It was very touching and loving to hear about the extended family that I have not ever met. Jim and Mark's grandmother, Minnie, was an exceptional woman, and I can relate to her in many ways. I admire Mark for all he has done and for all he has accomplished.
He has been so supportive of us, but this book has really "tied the loose ends up" for me. The exercises at the end of each chapter are really thought provoking. I began to remember memories that I would have thought that I had forgotten forever. It is nice to know that they are there, and now I can incorporate them in with the "bad" so that the "bad" isn't that horrible. I feel that I have grown and matured, and am ready to Re-Frame and Remake my life. He is right...you can go home again.
Family dynamics and how to deal with them........2004-05-11
This is a great read for anyone having a family or coming to terms with family problems. Bryan came from a disfunctional family and spent a decade of his life blaming his family for the letdowns in his life. Once he saw his family was not the problem and he was, he came to terms with his family and decided to become a member of the family again. This book mainly focused on the interaction between children and their parents, but it can be used with other relationships. This is a great read for any of us who have problems with their family, because it councils us in how to behave in the proper manner. As Bryan himself also states, he even has to work on how to see his family in the proper light. This gives great insight into family dynamics, and is useful reading for anyone.
I plan on using some of Mark's principles with my family. Family matters, and as Mark show, some of us have some pretty heavy baggage. Losing the baggage is a first step in coming to terms with your family. Good read and great advice.
Shift from being Right to being Loved and Happy Now.......2004-02-18
Re-enter your family and find your own true loving nature with Codes of Love by Mark Bryan. Mark uses his own family life and the diverse lives of many clients and friends to help you change your personal family recipes from leftovers to exciting new meals that are deeply nurturing, satisfying and actually possible to enjoy.
Mark's carfully prepared program merges passion with persistence in order for you to digest your past and emerge in the present with new compassion for yourself and the other members of your family.
I personally used Codes of Love to graft into my being Mark's substantial experience in mending families. With Mark's vision by my side, I was able to find the courage, humor and new ways of viewing my past in order to enjoy and reconnect with my precious parents. I had been completely separate from my father (I thought) and almost totally separate from my mother for over twenty years. Mark showed me that they were actually never far from my heart or my mind.
During those twenty years Mark Bryan's wisdom paid various visits to my creative awareness through his books and through a one afternoon seminar in San Francisco. In book form, Mark Bryan and Julia Cameron came into my life first with the amazing Artist's Way and then with the profoundly transformative Artist's Way at Work. In the fall of 2002 my domestic partner came home with Codes of Love for me to use and hopefully help me find a better way to understand and forgive my family and myself.
Mark and his powerful books have brought me back into a full and loving contact with the only parents that I will ever have. Using Mark's words and work to reconnect with my parents has also set me free to engage in my own projects with more confidence, determination and respect for myself.
I sincerely hope that you can also use Codes of Love to further understand your past, free yourself in the present and rejoin your primal pack.
My parents are 80 and 81 and I also have a niece and nephew who are 10 and 13 -- we all needed to come together as an interactive and loving family before it was too late. Mark Bryan and Codes of Love were the ticket that eventually helped us to create the healing, to let go and to make merriment again with each other.
Working with the principles and exercises in Codes of Love gives us the capacity to strengthen our connections with ourselves, our partners, our families and with our worldwide families as well.
Awakening words!.......2000-01-08
I received this book as a gift and it really helped me to see that I was interpretting things my family was saying and doing in a defensive and distorted way. This book has helped to re-examine these things and accept that my family loves me and just wants what is best. I have also tried to stop controlling family members, which has been something I was told and never believed until now. Hats off the the author for writing this insighful book!

This affecting story of an English couple's struggle to keep their love alive despite the damage inflicted by the husband's years as a POW reminds us that real-life traumas are more terrible and less easily resolved than those in war movies. Beautiful, vivacious Pamela Kirrage and quiet, intense RAF pilot Donald Hill fell in love in March 1939, less than four months before Donald was shipped out to Singapore. Captured during the fall of Hong Kong, he spent three and a half years in a Japanese camp, where he subsisted on miniscule rations and saw his companions tortured and killed for their part in an underground operation he had also joined. He recorded his experiences in an encoded diary that came to symbolize for Pamela, who married him in 1946, the crippling sorrows he was unable to share with her. The psychological legacy of Donald's imprisonment, particularly his fits of anger and emotional distance, prompted the Hills to quarrel and Pamela to drink. Unable to live together, miserable apart, they divorced in 1978, but remarried a year before Donald's death in 1985. Only when a British mathematician finally cracked the secret code of Donald's diary (keyed to the letters in his and Pamela's names) in 1996 could she wholly understand his private hell. Veteran nonfiction author Andro Linklater ably interweaves three distinct stories: Pamela and Donald's star-crossed romance, the tragic drama of his wartime suffering and endurance, and the gripping, step-by-step adventure of cracking the diary's code. His sad, moving book acknowledges the agony of a generation haunted by wartime horrors it could never discuss, while honoring the power of love to assuage, if not eliminate, emotional pain. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
For fifty years, Pamela Kirrage longed to unlock the secrets of her husband’s encrypted war diary. She was on the verge of giving up when she at last found a mathematician who became as obsessed with learning the secrets of the diary as she was. After months of painstaking investigation, he was finally able to crack the code, and in the process uncover the ending to an extraordinary World War II romance.
Pamela fell in love with RAF pilot Donald Hill in the summer of 1939, just a few months before he was sent to fight in Pacific. Although they planned to marry soon, Donald was captured after siege of Hong Kong and spent the next four years in a Japanese POW camp. Donald ultimately returned to Pamela, but he was never able to tell her about those lost years–and Pamela became convinced that the key to their happiness lay within the mysterious diary he brought back from the war. In
The Code of Love Andro Linklater uses the decoded diary as well as extensive research and interviews to paint a vivid portrait of the World War II era, turning this dramatic love story into an inspiring, unconventional epic.
Customer Reviews:
Simply the Best.......2001-03-27
This is simply the best book I have read in a long time.
Andro Linklater writes clearly and eloquently about the love affair between Pamela Kirrage and Donald Hill at the eve of World War II. He brings to life the great excitement of their budding romance and the long, difficult years they spent apart, Pamela doing her part to support England's war efforts at home and Donald languishing in a Japanese concentration camp.
The atrocities that Donald experienced are described in a matter of fact manner that does not take away from the sheer horror of what he must have endured. He was determined to document what happened in the camp at the risk of his own life and eventually coded his diary to ensure that it would not be discovered. Through it all, his promise to return to Pamela gave him the will to survive.
Years later after Donald's death, Pamela resolved to know the contents of his diary so she could understand what had happened to him, what had happened to them. I found the efforts to decode his diary just as fascinating as the turbulent relationship between Pamela and Donald.
This is an intelligent and articulate account of two passionate people caught up in the throes of war and their struggle to regain their lives and relationship once reunited. It is a romance, a war history, and a mystery all rolled into one.
I am recommending it to everyone I know. Read it!
A true tear jerker!.......2001-03-20
Pamela Kirrage and Donald Hill were very much in love and living in England right before the outbreak of World War II. Donald was sent overseas and spent three and a half years in a Japanese prison camp. He was never the same after the war, but tried to live a normal life with Pamela and their children.
David kept a diary during his imprisonment, but no one could crack the code until years after Donald's death, when Pamela found a mathematician who solved the mystery.
This book tells Donald and Pamela's sad, but moving story of true love, the horrors of war and the ultimate triumph of the human spirit.
