5 out of 5 stars Born in Blood - is there any name more suitable?.......2007-10-17

First off - there is a wealth of information here for anyone searching for answers about The Knights Templar. Before reading this book I read "The Knights Templar: The History and Myths of the Legendary Military Order" by Sean Martin. This was a good starting point and a factual book that you can reference to time and time again.

Regarding Born in Blood - I learned a great deal about the Templar's, but also of King Philip of France, Pope Clement V, the Church, different kingdoms and their deceitful way of handling certain matters. If you were a man of power at that time, it seems there were so many factors to take into consideration. Everywhere you looked - someone had intentions of taking over a throne/kingdom (making malicious power plays) etc. There was a never-ending story of people in high places looking to conspire, and scheme against their enemies (and their friends) to achieve specific goals at ANY cost. But, what's great about this book is that the author is very easy to follow, hence, you see these evil plots unravel right before your eyes. NOTE: something can be learned (in a business sense & life in general) from reading these malevolent schemes, for "History always repeats itself".

I found many fascinating facts in this novel like the Papacy's voracious thirst for money, land, political connections, and above all POWER. I have come to realize the Church (just like any other organization) has had their fair share of a dirty past riddled with bodies, and covered in bloodshed. On more than one occasion, you had 2 popes ruling in the same timeframe with both popes conspiring to cause the downfall of the other. I never knew the church had this kind of history...I will definitely be reading more about the ancient "evil papacy" in the months to come.

Then we cover the 2nd part of the book about the Freemasons, their origin, and their behind the scenes life right up to where the book touches on modern day Freemasonry. John J. makes a very believable argument that the Templar organization (so rich, powerful, and politically connected) could reach the goal of: escaping persecution, set forth underground, start a new association and survive for centuries to come. You also read about the "cover-up origin" of Freemasonry and their machinations behind it all. You see their early dealings, and how they came to light. There is also some discussion of a few famous figures of America's early history as well.

Through the trials, and tribulations of this book, you realize that the desire for MORE money and MORE power can never be harnessed. There is NEVER enough for figures of authority, and it is virtually their undoing. I think John J. Robinson is a good author with a very clear writing style. He makes the book enjoyable, and I think he made a very good connection between the 2 organizations (he has made me a believer). This book has also made me very interested in the medieval era. I plan on purchasing a few more books based on the same time period.

5 out of 5 stars Following a trail.......2007-06-27

Scholars doing research on a subject often uncover information the leads to a different path. Most scholars will ignore that information to finish the work they started, but other scholars follow that path to see where it leads. Thus it was for John Robinson, the author of "Born In Blood".
Mr. Robinson doing research about the Peasants' Revolt in England in 1381 uncovered information about the Knights Templar and subsequently their connection with the Freemasons.
Mr. Robinson, who is not a Freemason, took the information he gathered and presented it in a well written book. The facts uncovered and the conclusions reached will get both Masons and non-masons to look at the world's oldest and largest fraternity in a new, more positive, light.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2007-04-10

I am pleased to read another book that is not set to trash history makers but instead to make some sense out of the ignorance of many for the benefit of a true free society.

4 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Read, But............2007-03-18

I have read and re-read this work a couple of times. Robinson writes a fascinating account of the Knights Templar and what may have happened to them after the Order was suppressed. As has been noted in most of the previous reviews, the author writes a good story. My gripe with it, and I say this both as a Master Mason and also as one who majored in History and minored in Bio Sciences in college, where are the footnotes? The references, the research notes to back up his statements? Without this supporting evidence that can be checked by other researchers, the work borders on being largely just speculation. I realize that much of the history of Freemasonry was never written down, and thus opens it up to a lot of speculation about its possible origins. A more recent work, The Secret History of Freemasonry, may actually be closer to the truth of the matter in that the Templars were patrons and financial backers of much of the great cathedrals and fortifications built during the two hundred years of their existence. And thus they would have had extensive connections to the operative masons who built these structures, and some of the refugee knights might have sought refuge within the stone mason guilds. Paul Naudon, the author of this work, backs up his work with numerous references -- something that unfortunately Robinson, now deceased, failed to do. So enjoy Born in Blood, but take it with a grain of salt.

5 out of 5 stars A most plausible view of history.......2007-02-11

Maosn's, of which I am one, have an enigmatic past. In 1717 the United Grand Lodges of England (UGLE) suddenly appeared. Yet Masonic Lodges had existed for a long time. Why go so public that year?

John Robbinson set out to answer a simple question. How could the English Peasant's Revolt of 1318 been so well coordinated and executed in an era parish laws, illiteracy, and servitude? It took him, quite by chance from that revolt to Freemasonry. This book is well researched and well thought out. What he does, and what I find most fascinating, is to use the language of the Knights Templar- French, to support his thesis. Certain words recording in the reports of the uprising are generally ignored because when thought of as English, had no meaning.

His conclusion is fascinating and in a much better class historical writing than Holy Blood Holy Grail. A good read. It could serve as outline for a great epic movie.

While I do not subsribe to the Templar - Masonic School of origins, I do believe that he is correct on the Templar-Peasant Revolt connection.

    Book Description

"Casey at the Bat," the legendary poem detailing the abysmal failure of a small-town baseball hero, has become as much a part of American culture as baseball itself. But until now, little has been written about the circumstances surrounding its creation and its first performance in New York's Wallack's Theater in 1888.

In this incredible new slice of Americana, John Evangelist Walsh gives the story behind the poem, shaping vivid pictures of the poet, the poem's original and favorite performer, New York in the 1880s, and America in the earliest years of its love affair with baseball.

Surveying the day's great comic performers to its most legendary baseballers, from the streets of Manhattan to the zeitgeist of a young America, the story of "Casey" is as dramatic as the poem itself. With an amazing wealth of detail, Walsh explores the road leading to the poemÂ's first performance and its immediate popularity. Baseball fans, theater lovers, and American history buffs alike will enjoy this dramatic tale of a culturally definitive moment--The Night Casey Was Born.

    Book Description

Sales is the most important function to any enterprise, but small business owners and entrepreneurs have no idea how to hire salespeople, let alone hire GREAT salespeople. Many entrepreneurs and small business owners often hire salespeople based on their work experience at large corporations, or they hire salespeople based on "feelings." These common mistakes often become the reason small businesses fail within their first five years.

Great Salespeople Aren't Born, They're Hired shares the secrets of hiring great salespeople for small businesses (less than 200 employees). The old methods of recruiting top sales professionals just don't work anymore. Joe Miller, a trailblazer in the head hunting profession, presents the foolproof techniques for finding great salespeople that have fueled the success of his company, SalesKingdom, and have revolutionized the recruitment process.

Starting from a simple premise, the BASE, Great Salespeople Aren't Born, They're Hired guides you through the recruitment process. Learn how to assess not only what a candidate can offer your company, but what your company can offer a candidate. Learn why the golden ratio of 100:1 is so important to finding a perfect match. Unearth the dirty secrets of the mediocre recruiter's usual M.O. and master effective interview techniques through extensive real-life examples, role-plays, and step-by-step instruction.

Written in a direct, often colloquial style, this book will quickly become the go-to resource not only for those in charge of hiring, but also for the candidates who come before them.

In today's fast-paced, brutal business world any small company faces threats by major corporations and larger businesses. Salespeople are the key to help keeping the company alive and active. But you not only just need salespeople, you need GREAT salespeople! This book helps the reader (and the small business owner) to choose wisely in their sales candidates. I found this book to be extremely informative and highly valuable to learning how a small business owner (like myself) can weed out all the bad sales candidates and to only settle for the very best. It is a must read for small business owners!

      Book Description

Are new reproductive and genetic technologies racing ahead of a society that is unable to establish limits to their use? Have the "new genetics" outpaced our ability to control their future applications? This book examines the case of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), the procedure used to prevent serious genetic disease by embryo selection, and the so-called "designer baby" method. Using detailed empirical evidence, the authors show that far from being a runaway technology, the regulation of PGD over the past fifteen years provides an example of precaution and restraint, as well as continual adaptation to changing social circumstances. Through interviews, media and policy analysis, and participant observation at two PGD centers in the United Kingdom, Born and Made provides an in-depth sociological examination of the competing moral obligations that define the experience of PGD.

Among the many novel findings of this pathbreaking ethnography of reproductive biomedicine is the prominence of uncertainty and ambivalence among PGD patients and professionals--a finding characteristic of the emerging "biosociety," in which scientific progress is inherently paradoxical and contradictory. In contrast to much of the speculative futurology that defines this field, Born and Made provides a timely and revealing case study of the on-the-ground decision-making that shapes technological assistance to human heredity.

2 out of 5 stars More fiction than history.......2007-01-31

What a waste of my time and money! This is the authosr's second book that I read, and I beleive the last. If you like historical fiction this is not for you. I don't think the characters are well developed, she had a wonderful piece of history to work on and did not do it justice. As someone wrote here before maybe the author was influenced by Hollywood because the explosions and the involvement of women of the time ( especially a princess ) on the "action packed" part is somewhat unbelievable. Sometimes the book made me feel it was written for teens.

3 out of 5 stars Good twist to the old Tower Tale.......2006-09-08

      3.5 stars

Ms. Maxwell's take on what happened to the two sons of Edward IV who disappeared from the Tower of London shortly after Richard III "usurped" the crown from the eldest of them adds a clever layer to the two most commonly told versions of this story (that Richard III had them murdered, or that he was innocent & uninvolved and the Duke of Buckingham did it in attempt to gain the crown for himself).

I absolutely love the possibility of Margaret Beaufort's involvement which Maxwell has added in this story. Her ambitiousness, political machniations and involvement in intrigue have been well documented. It's entirely plausable to see her as the pupeteer behind Buckingham... however, other aspects of Maxwell's take on how she and Buckingham may have been involved are completely far-fetched. This story provides a "happy ending" to a tale that simply could not have ended so. In writing it as thus, Maxwell pushes the reader beyond the bounds of believability and left this particular one feeling quite disappointed after reading 7/8 of the story only to find a Hollywood ending complete with explosions.

Maxwell relies on an overly used formula to set the stage for the story. The main character, Nell Caxton, is uncommonly educated for a woman of her time, has maintained a childhood friendship with Princess Elizabeth and thus has access to Royal circles, and yet is so likeable and street smart that she is also friends with every street-dwelling pauper and prostitute in the vacinity of Westminster. Nell's cleverness also opens doors to romance with a man of the court, a position as tutor to the young king-to-be, and an appointment as scribe to Margaret Beaufort. Nell has a surprising amount of unchaperoned time, much of which she manages to spend with her also-strangely-unchaperoned princess friend. As one would expect, the girls even get to sneak around undetected disguised as young men.

Despite the kitsch formula and over-the-top ending, the book is entertaining. The story of Richard of York / Richard III and his ascention to the throne and coinciding disappearance of the Princes in the Tower has intrigued the public for 500+ years. Maxwell has contributed a smart, mostly plausable and formerly unexplored possible answer to the mystery.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining but flawed.......2006-08-13

This is the first book by this author that I've read. I only chose it because it has to do with Richard III and the Princes in the Tower, a mystery that has always fascinated me.

I'm not going through the storyline here, as numerous reviewers before me have already done so. The main question is, who was responsible for the disappearance of the Princes?

Ms. Maxwell's answer as to the identity of the culprit is clever and credible (psychologically and historically speaking), but the whole rescue-of-the-princes scene is such a stretch it's not believable for one second.

Also, though Ms. Maxwell did read some previous books of the subject, she didn't assimilate them very well and makes several historical mistakes, like the people in the crowd circa 1500 referring to Richard III as a hunchback. If they lived at the time, they should have known he was no such thing, that's only Shakespeare's take on it. Besides, by general accounts, Richard III was loved in his time. He was a good king for the little time he had ruling England.

She also absolves Henry VII from the crime on the grounds that he wasn't in England at the time. She obviously didn't read, or conveniently forgot, Josephine Tey's and others' theories that the Princes were alive and well when Henry Tudor took over the Tower (which was not a prison at the time, but a royal residence) and that he (supposedly) only did away with them after he took the throne. Another theory of course is that they were never murdered at all.

Being a stickler for at least some historical accuracy even in a work of historical fiction, that irked me and detracted from my enjoyment of an otherwise entertaining book. I liked Nell Caxton's romance with Lord Rivers, and the fact (which might be true) that Elizabeth of York was in love with Richard III.

The ending left one hanging, because the two friends, Nell and Bessie, tell the whole "true" story to the future Henry VIII. What good did it do? We all know he didn't lift a single finger to rehabilitate his great-uncle's memory. Actually he finished what his father had started, killing off what was left of the heirs of York. And what became of the Princes after they were rescued is also left to the reader's imagination. It would have been nice if she had hinted at the "pretender and impostor" Perkin Warbeck, who claimed to be the younger of the two princes during a rebellion under Henry VII.

All in all, I did enjoy the story but purely as a work of suspense/mystery fiction. As historical fiction, it was sadly disappointing.

      5 out of 5 stars A compelling look into an ages-old mystery.......2006-06-06

(This review was first published in The Historical Novels Review, Issue 34, November 2005 - ISSN 1471-7492)
The disappearance and alleged murder of Edward IV's young sons in the Tower has fueled centuries of speculation, both in fiction and nonfiction. Shakespeare was one of the first dramatists to peg the crime on Richard III, in part because the playwright lived under Elizabeth I, a Tudor. The Tudors were invested in having history record Richard III as the perpetrator, seeing as Henry VII had killed Richard in battle, founding the Tudor line. Nevertheless, a staunch cadre of Richard III defenders believes he was not to blame. The princes themselves were never seen again, and on this intriguing, if oft-explored, mystery does Robin Maxwell build her fourth novel, as told through Nell Caxton, daughter of an innovative English printer, and Princess Elizabeth (Bessie) of York, the doomed princes' sister. Maxwell has shown her skill in previous historicals, most notably her masterful The Wild Irish; here, she moves back in time to the tumultuous final days of Edward IV's reign and Richard III's usurpation of his nephew's throne. The history itself offers a compelling story line, with the added dimension of the entrepreneurial Caxton family, and we are quickly swept into the chaotic events leading to the princes' disappearance. Maxwell conjures an intelligent, credible alternative to the Richard III theory, with Nell unraveling the mystery. Nell is an engaging lead, a commoner whose educational skills and familial connections allow her to penetrate the royal circle. The tale is accessible even to English history novices, and Maxwell's scheming Buckingham, icy Elizabeth Woodville, and implacable Margaret Beaufort offer a complex glimpse into the often-lethal struggle for power at court.

5 out of 5 stars To The Tower Born.......2006-03-17

This subject has always attracted controversy as to what really happened to the two princes. It is however expressed in a way which leaves the door still slightly ajar for the readers own assumption. I liked this book very much I liked the authors style of writing and the wonderful way it has been told through the eyes of two very different ladies one a royel born the other a commoner with a lasting bond of firm frienship which endures through many trials and tribulations. A great read and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars SUZY HAS STOOD THE TEST OF TIME..............2007-09-28

I have been traveling with Suzy (well...with her wonderful books) for 20 years and she has never failed me. This is a fast paced world & prices change by the day so go easy on her. The overall picture is you must get ALL of her books because she will tell you where to travel when other locations are out of sight on $$$. As a money manager my advice is to go now, because with the problems of our credit crunch (won't go away anytime soon)travel is dirt cheap now. I shop online globally constantly but nothing replaces the sights, smells, & the local personalities. Enjoy your travels with Suzy-she is the best out there. I am waiting for the Shopping The World due out in March 2008.

4 out of 5 stars good for guidelines.......2006-11-07

like all travel guides, the pricing is always suspect between the writing and publication time. where this guide is good is that it gives off the beaten path as well as the more 'touristy' stops: good for the first time london visitor as well as the person returning for the umpteenth time. like with anything else, know your prices before you go. **credit card companies do not charge the overseas fee - that is often seen on the atm side!*****

      1 out of 5 stars Math 101.......2006-08-19

I only read online the first few pages, as Suzy's reviews have been a bit off the past few years. I was suspicious to read on page three in her quick shop section that I should pop into Jo Malone as the prices are half what they are at home.
I am a Jo Malone devotee. The whole line. So, I went to Jo's two web sites, UK and USA and to Neiman's, and did a cost comparison. Suzy is partially correct, the prices are half of the USA in London, until you do the currancy conversion!
Here are a few: Body lotion: 38.00 GBP in Jo Maolone London. That converts to $71.40, the body lotions sells for $60.00.
100 ml's of any cologne: 59.00 GBP, that converts to $111.00, it sells for $90.00. Body creme: 44.00 GBP equals $82.00 it retails for $75.00.
This is an exchange rate for August, but the pound has been high for ages, and a few cents/pence either direction isn't going to make it or break it. I also didn't include sales tax in the USA or potential VAT return if you bought enough to qualify in the UK or the 3% that most credit cards charge for foreign transactions.
My point is, suzy cannot be relied on to give accurate well thought out advice, this is your hard earned money, and she hasn't done her research. Shame on her.

This is a great book for fundraisers of all levels. It is more like a self-help book than a fundraising book. I agree with all who said this is not a how-to book, but a go-for-it book. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Looking towards the Future!.......2000-05-06

As a young person looking towards moving actively into fundrasing, I appreciated this book alot. It gave me the encouragement I needed to stick it out, and understand that its not as easy as it looks, but I can do it. This isn't a how-to-book, its more of a "You can do it!" book.

This book offers the best advise I've ever seen on Fund Raising! It is not a technical how -to- do-it book, but goes into the underlying assumptions and attitudes that are necessary to become a successful fund raiser. It gets you excited about fund raising and makes you want to run out and get started!

Please do not take the title to be a critism of the material itself. I love Dr. Fox's work. I now own several books as listed below. What has caused me to ding this 'book' is the fact it was promoted as 'rare'. It is not by any means rare.

Having obtained this 'book' (its merely 17 written pages with over 15 blank pages) I found that all three essays are in Chapter 11, 12, and 13 in Dr Fox's other book, Power Through Constructive Thinking. This 'book' is priced @ $12 dollars whereas Power Through Constructive Thinking can be obtained for $11 and contains over 100 pages of more material. After researching further I find that all these 'books' (you can indentify them as having a bright yellow border with white inset contrasting the title) published by Kessinger Publishing are merely reprints of individal essays which are contained books (published by HarperCollins) in Alter your Life, Power Through Constructive Thinking. Find and User your Inner Power, Diagrams for Living, and Stake your Claim.

I highly recommend Sermon on the Mount, Alter your Life, Power Through Constructive Thinking. Find and User your Inner Power, Diagrams for Living, and Stake your Claim.

Have you ever listened to a presentation that was so boring you wanted to fall asleep? Have you ever given a presentation that was so boring your audience went to sleep? I have been in both situations and it is not fun. So how can you make your presentations better? "Great Speakers Aren't Born" will answer the question for you. It was written after I had gained considerable experience as a speaker and conducted thousands of seminars on presentation skills. The concepts in the book will make it easier for you to organize and deliver the best presentations you have ever done. It covers all of the elements to take you from your current level to a much higher plane. Organization, visuals, dialogue, questions and answers, and delivery are some of the important topics discussed. You'll enjoy the journey of enhancing your presentation skills and seeing how powerful this information can be in influencing your audiences. Have a good read!
