Seeing What's Next: Using Theories of Innovation to Predict Industry Change
ASIN: 1591397588 |
Book Description
Even world-class companies, with powerful and proven business models, eventually discover limits to growth. That’s what makes emerging high-growth industries so attractive. With no proven formula for making a profit, these industries represent huge opportunities for the companies that are fast enough and smart enough to capture them first.
But building tomorrow’s businesses while simultaneously sustaining excellence in today’s demands a delicate balance. It is a mandatory quest, but one that is fraught with contradiction and paradox. Until now, there has been little practical guidance.
Based on an in-depth, multiyear research study of innovative initiatives at ten large corporations, Vijay Govindarajan and Chris Trimble identify three central challenges: forgetting yesterday’s successful processes and practices; borrowing selected resources from the core business; and learning how the new business can succeed. The authors make recommendations regarding staffing, leadership roles, reporting relationships, process design, planning, performance assessment, incentives, cultural norms, and much more.
Breakthrough growth opportunities can make or break companies and careers. Forget, Borrow, Learn is every leader’s guide to execution in unexplored territory.
Customer Reviews:
Working from the Inside.......2007-08-20
We always hear about the innovators who go out to their garage and come out millionaires. But those slogging it out to innovate in old companies don't get any kudos. In fact, it is a pretty thankless process.
This book provides some key wisdom and models that will help internal innovators to design systems to get the most out of a large corporation without killing the new idea.
Just what I needed to help my job.......2007-07-15
I work deeply involved in innovation and its unusual needs for creating successful business, sometimes very far from the regular processes and methodologies. However, it was sometimes difficult to justify to my bosses why I took some decisions that seemed to go in opposite direction of the expected result and it is exactly what this book brought to me. Recommended.
Inside look at managing an innovative offshoot.......2007-04-19
As opposed to offering a simple guide to innovation, Vijay Govindarajan and Chris Trimble do something less common, and they do it well: They analyze the institutional structures which allow, nurture and support innovation. They explain how to open new innovation-focused divisions in your organization, how to think about learning and how to evaluate such new projects (and, perhaps more importantly, how not to evaluate them). They share case studies of established companies' successful and failed attempts to sprout innovative offshoots. The results are very level-headed. The authors are quite clear about the obstacles to institutional innovation, planning and learning in uncharted waters. We expect that this book could help you sail through.
A "must-understand" for leaders concerned with long-term prosperity.......2006-07-14
Many thanks to Vijay Govindarajan (VG) and Chris Trimble for this grand exposition of ideas first shared in the Spring 2005 California Management Review and the May 2005 Harvard Business Review. VG and Trimble's "Forget, Borrow, Learn" framework is the most powerful recipe for corporate reinvention that I have encountered.
As other Amazon reviewers have skillfully described the contents of this excellent book, I would like to add just two things.
First, as a graduate of the Tuck School of Business, I had the good fortune of encountering VG in the classroom. VG is a dynamic presence who commands attention. If you get a chance to experience VG in person, take it. To get a (very) small taste of what I am talking about, check out VG's video link at Tuck's website.
Second, to learn further from VG, I highly recommend VG's blog. Several of VG's posts are pure gold. For example, in VG's March 10, 2006 post, he puts forth his "three box thinking model," with box 1 being "Manage the present," box 2 being "Selectively abandon the past," and box 3 being "Create the future." The leaders of most companies spend most of their time in box 1, believing that they are working on strategy. As VG contends, though, strategy is really about boxes 2 and (especially) 3, that is, figuring out how to allocate scarce resources today to assure market leadership in 2010, 2020, and beyond. Yes, indeed.
In sum, I not only recommend this book wholeheartedly, but also urge those concerned with the long-term health of their firms to continue reckoning with the thoughts and writings of both VG and Chris Trimble.
Some Excellent New Ideas for Pursuing Organic Growth.......2006-06-27
This is an excellent book that provides some excellent new ideas for pursuing organic growth. These ideas are built around three challenges: forgetting, borrowing and learning. The ideas are developed as 10 rules which are supported by numerous examples. To read this book, I would focus on the introduction and chapter one and then go to the conclusions in chapter 10. Chapter one provides the context for the rules and chapter 10 summarizes them. From there, you can focus on the rules that are most interesting to you and your organization. The chapter that I found to be most interesting was chapter 9, Theory Focused Planning an approach to understanding the business, how it will work and to discover the business model that the organization needs to focus on to be successful. I found this to be the best chapter in the book, because the traditional concepts of annual budgeting really don't work well in the world of innovation. And, this appears to me to be fundamentally better approach.

Customer Reviews:
Not what I thought.......2007-09-13
I bought this as a present for my wife. We had just returned from a trip that included a visit to the Grand Canyon, and I wanted to get her a memento of the visit. This book sounded good, but was not the one that included the beautiful vistas that we wanted. There are some photos too dark to really discern why they are included. There are some photos of a boat on the bank of the river. That could be from anywhere.
Although I suppose others may find it interesting, we didn't want a book of prose, we just wanted amazing photos. This was not that book.
The finest Grand Canyon book at the lowest price...........2007-02-15
This book is so awesome, and of such high quality, that its Amazon price seems surreal...I have two copies and am ordering a third, for posterity or whatever.
Intensely beautiful photographic prints, at the very leading edge of Canyon photos....almost beyond description!
If you buy one copy of this book, you'll then want another for a gift, and another for your own collection.....etc.
off the charts superb stunning startling good heavens.......2006-11-03
Yes, you would expect truly astounding photography here, and you get exactly that, in lots of different flavors too, but the stories are deft and revealing -- far more than in a book of photos alone of a place that you couldn't take a bad photo if you tried. Trimble himself is a master craftsman with the camera, but his service here is to gather some really remarkable work and voices into a tome that anyone who has gaped and prayed there will want to paw through before you get major brownie points for giving it to someone else. Terrific work.
Review by Jennifer Owings Dewey, author/illustrator.......2006-09-28
Lasting Light is a treasure, a compilation of photographs taken of the Crand Ganyon over a broad stretch of time. The viewer/reader may gain a sense of history, passing from the old to the new. The book is an experience in images of the vast wonder of the Canyon and the smallest, most discreet detail. Because the text is direct and not-technical, anyone interested in what is grand and lit by extraordinary light, the Grand Canyon itself, will find this work a delight.
A superb choice as a Memorial Fund acquisition for any library system.......2006-07-10
Lasting Light: 125 Years Of Grand Canyon Photography by award-winning author and photographer Stephen Trimble is a visual celebration and documentation of the beauty and grandeur of one of the most photographed subjects on earth -- the Grand Canyon. Comprised of the best of 125 years of great photographs beginning with the pioneering glass plate negatives of the 19th century to the digital images of the 21st century, Lasting Light produces spectacular visuals enhanced with an accompanying text of fascinating details regarding the advances of photography, stories of various individual photographers, and the relationship between the photographers and the unique American icon that is the Grand Canyon. As a coffetable art book, Lasting Light is a simply wonderful contribution to any personal, academic, or community library photography reference collection and would make a superb choice as a Memorial Fund acquisition for any library system.

Book Description
A storehouse of practical writing tips, written in a lively, conversational style. Readers lean to develop a writer's sense: the book demonstrates that writing is really applied psychology since it is essentially the art of creating desired effects. Provides an explanation of what effects are desirable and how to create them. An exceptional book that works successfully on several levels simultaneously. Provides new insight into: how to generate interesting ideas and get them down on paper; how to write a critical analysis; how to write a crisp opener; how to invigorate a banal style; how to punctuate with confidence; how to handle various conventions, and much more. For anyone who needs a reference guide on writing.

Great Intro to Writing Well.......2005-09-21
If you only have time and money for one book on writing, get this one. But if you want two books, get this one and "The Elements of Style" by Strunk and White.
Short+Good=Great.......2005-07-28
You can read the book very quickly(2-3h) because it is written with great style(Trimble applies what he tells you, which makes the book a very good example to what he says). The advice is very practical, even the chapter on punctuation is useful-very useful i would say. Reading it once was enough for me to start using more expresive punctuation. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve his writing, whatever he may wish to write.
ps:this is the first book on writing i read. it might be that some/much of the advice from this book can be found in other books on writing.however, i think it's good to read this book, because it is short and nicely written;in the end it is a good idea to rehearse some things, sometime
This book taught me how to find my voice.......2005-01-13
I was fortunate enough to be a student in Dr. Trimble's American Liturature class at the University of Texas in 1989. Before I took his class, my writing was poor and insincere. I did not know how to use my own voice in my work.
After reading his book several times--and finally "getting it", I improved my writing significantly. I am a more successful person because of this book.
Thank you Dr. Trimble.
A Genuinely Readable, Practical and Fun Writing Book.......2004-09-22
This book was a required text in a writing class I had as an undergraduate and I actually enjoyed reading it. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I kept my copy instead of selling it back to the bookstore as a used copy at the end of the semester and I've used it for a reference ever since. It often comes in handy when I run up against obstacles in getting a writing project done.
As someone else pointed out, it's not as in depth as some other writing books. It is infinitely more readable and enjoyable, though. I know "enjoyable" is not a word that academics like since there seems to be an attitude of "it's only good if it's painful."
This book shows that good style and enjoyment aren't mutually exclusive. In fact it advises to turn your views and resources to best account to produce writing you'll be proud of. It also gives much more practical and understandable advice for inexperienced writers than anything else I've read.
This book should be a required yearly read for academic writers everywhere. It seems that many have forgotten the reason that they're writing--to communicate effectively--not simply to show off and get a publication under their belt.
The best writing guide there is.......2002-12-11
Reading Trimble's style guide changed my writing forever. In this book, Trimble explains the thought process of a good writer, and he makes his point so well that, since reading it, I have permanently conditioned myself to think in way he describes.
This style guide is more an essay on good writing than a reference book. Trimble focuses more on the thought process of a writer than on details. He exhorts us to always consider the audience as we write, and he carefully explains how to do this. He explains the writing process; how to construct the text to best communicate the point. He gives useful advice on common writing tasks like quoting and punctuating.
My favorite chapter is where he debunks some myths about the English language; these myths are arbitrary rules that had been thrust upon us by rigid prescriptive grammarians trying to make English more like Latin.
I first read an older edition of the book for an English class as high school senior about eight years ago. Reading this book made me excited about writing; Trimble writes in such as way that builds interest. I read the book cover to cover and immediately adopted the practices recommended in it. Unfortunately, in high school, they only lent textbooks, so I had to give it back. About eight years later, I repurchased the new edition of this book. Oddly enough, rereading it was kind of a waste of time, for I had learned the lessons well the first time and they had stuck with me. Trimble hadn't just given me good advice; he had permanently changed me.
I recommend that everyone who writes get this book, read it, and do what the book says.

Dan Butts.......2007-05-28
Book is littered with technical errors and examples that do not work. Don't waste your money!
wonderful beginner book.......2007-05-19
in doing my research of filemaker pro, i came upon this book. my experience with the dummies series has always been excellent. his book was easy to understand with a hysterical sense of humor. i use the book continually as a reference. i ended up taking a class on filemaker pro which i highly recommend. sometimes you just need someone in front of you to be able to ask questions.
one note... in the beginning of the book, the author stated, "FileMaker provides full, multiuser support for up to five users without requiring the user to add any additional licenses or patches." that statement is misleading. i understood that statement to mean one license would allow five user. not true! as long as each computer attempting to view the same file has a unique license number, five users can access the same file at the same time. if more than five users at a time are going to be using the file, you'll need to buy filemaker server. that is my only complaint. other than that, fabulous!
Excellent book for beginning Filemaker projects and beyond.......2007-04-06
I found this book to be very informative and helpful. It walks you through the steps to setting up a database with tables and layouts and starting script writing. I liked the humor thrown in. Reading and following the examples helped make alot of sense out of what the book was trying to accomplish, which was setting up the database.
A good book for FileMaker "users" wanting to become "developers".......2007-01-06
When choosing a book of this type, it's important to realize who the target audience is.
The overwhelming majority of FileMaker Pro users are beginners in database design and development. Most of these people have either read the manual or figured out the basics on their own, and can wield FMP as an office productivity tool just fine. (If you are purchasing this book, and have not read the FMP manuals, I suggest that you do so, they are well written, not painfully long, and quite useful to get started.)
This book is aimed at helping people get to the next step; from office productivity user to fledgling developer, and it serves that purpose very well.
If you want to learn more about design and scripting in FMP, then buy this book. After you've mastered this material, go for some of the more advanced texts out there.
filemaker pro design/scripting for dummies.......2006-07-12
In the aptly titled "foolish assumptions" on page 2, he states "I assume you're fairly comfortable with the basics of FM...". If I knew the basics why would I need a dummies book? This is not my first dummies book, but it may be my last.

A good primer on Structured Queries for SQL.......2006-11-05
This book has short chapters and a lot of examples. It is a good "second" book for an Introductory SQL course.
Attention Newbies to SQL - - This is your Book!!!.......2003-03-20
I am currently enrolled in a Database Management (Oracle/SQL) class at Boston College. Right off the bat, I knew I was in trouble when we were told the professor would be unavailable for help and most of students in class were computer science majors. (I was taking the class to broaden my computer skills above and beyond front-end web design.)
The textbook in class was the heinously monstrous 1200+ page Oracle 9i The Complete Reference by Kevin Loney. After struggling through many chapters and finding our professor's teaching style very unhelpful, I decided it was time for another resource.
I checked on Amazon ... and found Sam's Teach Yourself SQL in 10 minutes to be semi-helpful. Then at the Harvard Coop, I stumbled upon it - - A VISUAL INTRODUCTION TO SQL. The problem, I realized, was that I am a visual learner and need to see all the schema tables and step-by step actions to describe what happens as I develop queries. This books is key for any layman, like myself. It walks you through very basic (and more complex) problems in an easy-to-read visual approach. While using SQL on the PC, viewing the tables is difficult and this book helps you map out the problems to figure them out. I was especially impressed after emailing the author about a table question and getting a personalized response.
If you are in a bind to learn SQL on your own, this book is great and won't kill you lugging it around either.
P.S. A great addition I found to this book was a Mac client software (that can access Oracle Databases) called SQL Grinder. Like the book, this program is also very visual and the GUI (MAC) clearly reigns over any PC. Sorry Windows users! Thanks for your help, David Chappell! ;-)
All the Basics and More.......2001-11-30
This book doesn't assume that you are familiar with databases or the SQL programming language. It teaches you the programming language step-by-step using a graphic approach. A great way to learn SQL.
Excellent beginners book in SQL.......2000-11-06
I used this book when I needed to pick up SQL fast. I worked in an organization where I had to build Teradata Data Bases and used SQL to select and move the data. The illustrations really help visualize every aspect of assembling an SQL program and how it interfaces with the data base. I still use it today when I need to be reminded of a particular syntax. Don't loan this book out if you ever want to see it again. I did and now I'm buying another book!
The ONLY SQL book I recommend for beginners.......2000-09-06
This is a GREAT book for foundation skills in SQL.
I used this book to teach myself SQL when I was "elected" to implement an Oracle database system at a former job and have since gone on to become an Oracle developer and DBA. The concepts and techniques learned in this book have served me well along the way. I have taught Oracle development in a technical school, and insisted that they use this book in the classroom. The diagrammatic approach to learning about tables, columns, joins and SQL functions seems to "click" with everyone who encounters it.
I'm writing this review after buying my ?10th? copy of this book - don't loan it out if you need to keep your copy.

Before private cars crowded this hemmed-in city, rail was the only way to get around the challenging terrain, and the rail industry rose to the task with many innovative systems. Some of these were herculean, with massive bores through rocky hills, or elaborate cable and counterweight systems to handle steep inclines. Others were simpler, horse-drawn affairs that took passengers from the downtown and waterfront areas to outlying districts. The distinct flavor of San Francisco's neighborhoods owes much to the early rails, as these cars enabled residents to form their own enclaves and still interact with the commercial heart of the city.

Customer Reviews:
One small book, one very big lesson.......2006-07-31
You all know that in the movie, Lightning McQueen learns that life is not all about being first all the time, it's about "everyone coming together and doing the best they can," according to The King. Anyway, this special storybook, as told by Doc Hudson (isn't that cool?), tells the same story in his own words. I found it at Wal-Mart and now I have it in my own home since I have fallen in love with it, especially the black-and-white drawings of the cars. How unique is that? I sure hope parents' children learn something from this very special story of what it means to be a true winner. You know I would!
Chapter Book Based on the Movie.......2006-05-23
"My name's Doc Hudson. Folks round here say that every car has a story. I don't know if that's so, but I can tell you this: I've got one heck of a story for you! Oh, I know that you may not believe that one car could get itself in a world of trouble and turn a whole town on its ear. But I'm here to tell you how one car did!"
Lightning McQueen is a hotshot race car who only cares about winning. When he suddenly find himself in the sleepy old town of Radiator Springs, will he be able to accept life in the slow lane?
Faster Than Fast is 79-page chapter book told from the perspective of Doc Hudson, and features black and white sketches throughout.
My son found this book very engaging, asking my husband and I to read him a chapter a night. He enjoys looking at the pictures, too.
Personally, I think the colloquialisms of Doc Hudson takes away from the plot. Not only that, it's not exactly proper language for beginner readers so it could prove difficult for some youngsters to "get" what's going on in the story at times.
It's a shame this book was released before the movie, because now we all know what will happen before we hit the theaters.
For the price, though, you really can't beat this book based on the Disney/Pixar film Cars.

Great General Book.......2007-01-11
Great book outlining a proven method of setting up a successful program which was what I was looking for.
What every coach should know about building and maintaining a football program.......2006-12-08
Coach Allan Trimble has a 111-9 record and six consecutive Class 6A state championship titles. And his winning list goes on and on...
His book is a step by step guide on how to start and maintain a successfull football program.
This book covers the I-formation (power running game with a wide open passing attack) and a versatile multiple defensive system. Which, he used to win a 32-2 career playoff record and 25 consecutive playoff victories.
This book is very user friendly. Coach Trimble uses tons of pictures and diagrams. If you do not understand what he is talking about, all you have to do is look at the pictures. If you are looking for a play book, here it is. This book is great for youth to college level.
If you want to read about another coach that has reached the same level of success, read "COACHING FOOTBALL SUCCESSFULLY" BY Bob READE
