Theatre Teachers: This Is What You Need.......2006-11-10

This book is formatted so easily, it took me MUCH less time than I thought it would to prepare a unit on reader's theatre for my class. I used it for my high school theatre class so they wouldn't have to concentrate on large vocabularies, but rather to deliver the story in a simple, easy way. It was a HUGE success of a project and this book made it possible. It tells you how long each story is, what cast you'll need, and what reading level it is!! Yay!!!
The stories themselves are entertaining (even for high school!!!), compelling, and really fun to work with. I am SO grateful I ordered this!

If you have a "little princess" in your home, you have to read this book. I laughed so hard at little Gigi and her "misunderstanding" that being a little princess meant that she was really royalty, when in fact Walsh drives home that point that all God's children are royalty, heirs to the throne and children of the King of Kings! Gigi is a mess, but what a fun way to bring home this concept to children. With the help of her cat Lord Fluffy and her loyal subject and friend Frances, Gigi comes to the self-awareness that life is about more than just her - and the great news is that Gigi learns that she truly is royalty, but not in a kingdom that will rust and be destroyed, but rather in an eternal Kingdom where she will reign forever!

Great read for boys and girls - but your little princess will especially love this book!

This is a great book!!! My daughter loves all of the Gigi books, but this is her favorite so far. After stating the fact that we are all children of the King of Kings at the end, it doesn't go into any details of what that means. I think this makes it even better because it allows us to have conversations with our children. My princess & I have had many great bedtime talks about this, and I love it! The book is very funny. Gigi is full of herself, but it is also a great underlying lesson about pride. Her bubble gets burst when she discovers she is indeed NOT the only princess! GREAT BOOK! Buy it!

I was disappointed with the content. The pictures are delightful, and for that reason only, it got 2 stars. I found the story line thin, when in fact, the truth that we are ALL children of the King is really quite profound. Gigi is completely absorbed with herself - not a worthy role model. This is not because we don't suffer the same, but because she does not move from that position and it is not addressed or reinforced by anyone else in her life. Her father abdicates from the discussion, her mother gives her a one liner and her friend she considers her "subject". I thought Gigi was quite horrid!

My 4-year-old daughter received this book - it was her gift she opened on Christmas eve. We sat by the lighted Christmas tree and fire and she settled into my lap for a goodread. The illustrations ARE precious, as other reviewers have said. The story started off beautifully - very believable for a little girl. We got to the part about "the King" and I got intrigued as to how the writer would explain this - then the book ended. It just ENDED. No further explanation, no further story. Just a few more pages would have turned this almost good book into possibly a great book. I am sad that it didn't make it - I had high hopes. Perhaps you might want to check it out from the library first to see what I mean. :( (I did give it 2 stars because of the sweet illustration and the beginnings of a good book.)

Frank Baum is a classic writer that had a beautiful writing style that children should revisit that Grandparents enjoyed. These stories should be available in every library in our country as classic tales. My daughter is reading more and her imagination is in full bloom with this collection of books. The publisher and person responsible for puting this collection together should be applauded!

This book is condensed, I mean two pages printed on one page so the lettering is very small and none of the original art work is included. I did not realize when I bought it that the letters would be small. I also thought the original art work would be included. It's not bad if you want to read it with a magnifying glass.

I was wondering how they could fit all 15 oz books into 1 volume. the answer is by having no illustrations, two columns per page, and very small print. I felt like I was reading a text book more than a childrens set of books. it still works for a bedtime story for my son (though he really wants pictures), but for something to keep my son occupied while we ride on the bus it's a bit big to tote around. the story's are as I expected, designed for kids with no really scary parts and super simple plots; dull for a grown up but good for younger kids.

I give this book 5 stars because it is "OZ". I purchased something similar, but much much better from Border's , two years ago. Available from Amazon, look for 'The OZ Chronicles'. Volume 1 and Volume 2 contain all of Baum's Oz books. Green Leather Hardcovers, great size print. Volume 3 contains Baum's other books and stories. Incredible find and value.

I don't like the new translation at all.......2007-10-11

I love the style in which this book was originally translated from French to English. There was a genuine, child-like quality to it that rang true to the books character and that of it's charming little prince. The new translation took me by surprise as I was not aware that it had been re-translated and sadly, the surprise was not a happy one. It just doesn't feel like the same book to me, and tragically, the original translation appears to be out of print now. Why in God's name did they feel the need to fix something that was in no way broken? Ghaaaa! Child-like and genuine has been replaced by rigid and sterile. The Little Prince would weep. :(

This is a wonderful story and a great book I was able to share with my students. The only drawback with the book is that the pages are not in color, but the extremely low price allowed me to purchase the books for my students out of my own pocket.

I purchased this as a gift for my 7-year-old niece, who lives in a city distant from me. I'm told by her, and her parents, that it is a beautiful edition.

I can add nothing to the comments about this wonderful story, which speaks to the hearts of both children and adults.

As I begin this review I think that there must be tons of reviews out already since it's just a classic. Does anybody still need a summary and opinion? Well, maybe you do. Maybe you're like me who knew about the book, has met many people who love it and could never bring yourself to read it. Well, for you, I will write this review.

He story is a fable: a stranded pilot meets The Little Prince who shares with him his discoveries about the people and things he has met on his journey away from home. The Little Prince is like a child in many ways as he is open, curious, and accepting. But he is wise, too, knowing about what's truly important in life: friendship, responsibility for your friends, and enjoying things for what they are without trying to make them into something that you want.

When parts of the book were read to me in middle school I immediately despised it. A little prince fussing over a pretentious rose, how stupid was that?! I had to turn 38 to be able to read this book about love and friendship and life because I couldn't allow myself to be vulnerable to its message before now. I'm grown-up enough now to mourn the lack of responsibility I've shown towards the people I've tamed. And even harder for me: I'm grown-up enough now to mourn the lack of responsibility that people who tamed me have shown towards me. And I'm working on accepting the fact that I need to let go and try again to do better every day.

Boring, a waste of my time.......2007-08-09

I would rate this book with zero stars but I was unable to do so. Unfortunately I was forced to purchase this book for a class. It was a major waste of money in my opinion. If I had children I would NEVER submit them to this book. I found no point to the story at all. I wish I could get my money back as well as the time I wasted on reading it.

A WONDERFUL, "must-have" book for young girls!.......2007-07-23

Rarely do I ever just go on and on about a book as I read tons and our family/kids love to read as well, but this is the most precious book for young girls and their relationship to God you will EVER find. It is a WONDERFUL, WONDERFULLY touching book that is full of truth and may have you in tears as the love of God for your daughter just pours out of each page.

Each page is set up with God's letter from Him to her on the left side along with a verse, and her prayer in response on the right. There are quite a few pages and it is bound well and beautifully printed.

Perfect for reading at night to your child rather than just giving to them to read on their own, it's one-page 'chapters' are perfect for bedtime, or before prayers, or as a mother or dad devotional time with your child. My daughter actually asked me to read it with her at bedtime - Me reading the God portions and her the prayers in response.

You might worry that this is just another "Prncess-marketing gimmick book" to make money ala Disney, but that couldn't be farther from the truth! This is the meat of God's word and His desire to know your little girl...It will cause her to read the Bible and want to know God better. I too, worried a bit that it would follow that same, self-centered, "You are my princess" theme that we are always fighting against, but soon realised that this book offers many of it's own correctives to this kind of thinking. Good of the author to realise this and address it early on!

We are so looking forward to the boys version, "God's Mighty Warrior" that should be coming out soon by the same author. If you have boys it will probably be as good as this one! Buy it, read it, give tons of them away. It is easily the best $$ I have spent on a book in a long time.

An invaluable tool to teach a girl to love the Word of God. Each section is a letter from God (the King) to his daughter (the princess). Each is based on a scripture that teaches about Godly character and ends with a prayer. I've found it a wonderful way to teach my daughter to understand God's Word and treasure it as well. This book is about a rightly raised little girl and how she turns out - nearly PERFECT. This goes to show parents to BE NICE TO THEIR dependant and helpless little kids - brats are raised by @sshole parents, NOT by kind and loving parents, as Sarah's dad had been. It is about a very serious battle of the Self. Sarah says to every one "me and you are the same. it just so happens that I was born rich and you born poor." It doesn't make us WHO we are." which is true, but then her self-doubt manifests "who knows? maybe I am kind and generous because I have everything I could ever want. I give someone 100 pence and I don't lose anything because I have many many more. maybe if I was poor or had to work I'd be cruel and just a total Miss Michnkin or something." Note: these quotes are not exact from the book.

at this, "the Magic" steps in so that she DOES become poor and wretched, and thus proves to herself that she is who she is BECAUSE SHE IS, NOT because of being rich and doesn't work. Being poor and wretched gives the child the opportunity to manifest her inate kindness in unprecedented ways, like giving other people food when SHE herself had been so cold, wet and very hungry. See, she could not have proven this to herself had she stayed rich, and she apparantly needed to. All in all, a beautiful story of truimph of good over evil, abundance over poverty, exuberance over stale bread, and self security over self doubt (which she didn't have before). A truimph of the SELF shown where it always begins in life - in childhood. We are used to seeing this type of stuff in adults but adults do NOT have the same battles as children do. For one, adults are not helpless, dependant, and our battles are not as serious life-and-death. so, whatever empathy we have for other adults, should be increased a thousand times for children, like this soldier this little girl. yeay!

An enduring classic!.......2007-07-27

Good to see that readers are still enjoying this marvelous 1905 book which makes it a century old. Reminiscent of Dickens, but mercifully shorter, the prose flows in beautiful rhythms keeping young readers and readers like myself who are young at heart poised to keep on reading to find out what becomes of our tough little heroine.

Sara had a charmed life as an only and beloved child which fortified her through later immense difficulties as she fell from riches to rags. Her ability to tell stories and to help others saved her from the appalling treatment she received from the aptly named Miss Minchin. The author's own life (1849-1924) as a child parallels that of her heroine.

Young readers will find Sara a loving spirit to emulate. We are truly THERE with her on every page. When she eats her hot cross buns and tea we long for the same. Although drawn out at the end, the book ends at a surprising and perfect place.

Great Book with Valuable Lessons.......2007-06-14

My son and daughter were both enchanted by this story as I read it to them a few weeks ago. We all fell in love with Sara and her very active imagination. She inspired us to do good, as she did.

I thought it provided an excellent opportunity for us to discuss how important it is to treat others with respect, even when you think you will gain nothing from it. Sara seemed to be nothing more than a lowly pauper, but the man who chose to provide some beautiful things for the pauper next door was so immensely blessed by having done so. Conversely, Miss Minchin thought she could treat Sara in a humiliating demeaning fashion, but it ultimately brought her harm. Thus, there is value in being kind to everyone we meet. This point wasn't made in the story (I know that would turn some people off), I just thought it worth using the story to drive home the point.

Anyway, it is worth reading for more reasons than just that it is a great story, but it definitely is that.

When I was in third grade, I longed for a story that I could actually enjoy and remember nearly everything that goes on. You see, I couldn't find ANYTHING interesting until I found Secret Garden, Black Beauty, and A Little Princess, all of which I literally COULDN'T PUT DOWN. Now in fifth grade, I continue to read these books again and again and again and again and again and again and again and... you get the picture. $[...] is a great price for a book like this. If you have not yet read this, I strongly reccomend you read it. You will be blown away at this.

The book A Little Princess by Frances Hodgons Burnett has many emotions.In the dark winter of London
a little rich named Sara. Sara was very close to her dad.Sara's dad drops her off at Miss Minchin's Seminary shcool for girls. Her dad's partner Mr. Carrisfield just discovered a diamand mine.
While Sara was being treated like princess her dad was dieing of Jungle Fever. A coulple weeks later her
dad died and Sara was taking it really hard. Now Sara had lost all her many. Instead of living in the nicest room
she has to live in the attic as a slave.
She was running errands alot and hardly ate. A year has past and Mr. Carrisfield found diamonds in the mine!! Also half of them were Sara's!!

The illustrations for this series were created by Scott McKowen, who, with his wife Christina Poddubiuk, operates Punch & Judy Inc., a company specializing in design and illustration for theater and performing arts. Their projects often involve research into the visual aspects of historical settings and characters. Christina is a theater set and costume designer and contributed advice on the period clothing for the illustrations.

Scott created these drawings in scratchboard an engraving medium which evokes the look of popular art from the period of these stories. Scratchboard is an illustration board with a specifically prepared surface of hard white chalk. A thin layer of black ink is rolled over the surface, and lines are drawn by hand with a sharp knife by scraping through the ink layer to expose the white surface underneath. The finished drawings are then scanned and the color is added digitally.

As the popularity of the recent Lemony Snicket books proves, children never get tired of reading about orphans and their misfortunes. So Frances Hodgson Burnett’s 1905 story about a pampered little rich girl who suddenly finds herself poor and fatherless should continue to entice generations of fans.

Better than Sappy.......2006-07-18

A Little Princess follows the story of Sara Crewe, a young girl whose mother died when she was a baby and who has been sent to bording school. She has the finest clothes and toys and anything she wants but isn't spoiled (the story is a fairy tale, by the way). She imagines herself as a princess and wants to be kind wise and just. She does good deeds as her way of "scattering largess to the population." This results in her being the social butterfly of the bording school and earns her the animosity of its queen bee. All this changes in an instant when her fortune is lost and she becomes a scullery maid in the same boarding school. She works all day, sleeps in an unheated attic, and is underfed. She now imagines herself as a princess in disguise, and continues to try and do good deeds for anyone less fotunate. But now she has another identity too - a soldier, like her father, who must live on rations and bravely face each day.

I didn't find this book to be overly sappy and sentimental, but it got close to the borderline at times. There were plenty of discussions of dolls and lacey dresses and ribbons. I read this as an adult. I guess these are supposed to appeal to little girls who want to have a little princessy playground and so would love to read about ribbons, but I think descriptions of lace would have put me off as a child as well. Like I said, these only get borderline sappy, probably because Sara soon becomes penniless and enters the lower class. As a scullery maid she experiences hunger, phsychological abuse from the bording school mistress, and a grinding work schedule. This is not sugar coated for the children, but it isn't the focus either. The focus is on Sara's internal thoughts, her relationships with her few loyal student friends, and what she thinks of the neighbors and the new people she meets and things she sees. So even though there is all this poverty it is there as a setting and not because the author has an axe to grind. Strangely enough, this book came across as realistic.

This is a children's book, but functions as a book for adults as well. For example, the estate agent's diplomacy in getting Sara hired by the bording school after she is found to be penniless has some subtlties that are going to be more real for older readers.

I recommend this book to all. It is a children's book that works for adults too. It skirts the border of sappy, but for me didn't cross over at any point. It was a good story that I read through quickly and did not get bored with or bogged down by.

What a Great Book!.......2005-12-02

I read this book to my first through fourth grade students last year, and they loved it! Even the youngest were transported to another time and another place through this book. Our school targets students in need (mostly lower-income, minority children), so Sara's story really is a world away from the lives they know. Yet they truly enjoyed this book, and so did I!

A GREAT STORY.......2005-10-15

This book is more dated than THE SECRET GARDEN, but it's still a great story. It's hard NOT to identify with Sara Crewe.

I loved this book as a child (though not as much as I loved THE SECRET GARDEN, which I think is a better book). However, A LITTLE PRINCESS is far better than most books written for children! It tells a great story and it makes you think, even if some of those thoughts make you uncomfortable, like the thoughts about differences between rich and poor children.

For a modern, well-written book about a girl at an English boarding school, read Libby Koponen's BLOW OUT THE MOON. It has the same classic feel, though the American heroine is very different from Sara and MOON is quite funny in places.

Must Read Book!!!.......2005-09-26

This book has been one of the best I have ever read! Frances Hodgson Burnett made me picture everything happening in the story. It's a magical book that I think anyone should read at one point in life. In this great book Sara Crewe was a kind and genorous person. She cared a lot for people who needed more than she did. In hardships she held her head up high and still thought of herself as a princess. I think everyone should read this book because it teaches you that you need to appreciate what you have, and give back to others in need.

This particular order was a gift for my niece because we already own this book. My daughters (Ages 9 and 6) and I have recently finished our copy and enjoyed it so much we wanted to share it with their cousin. What little girl doesn't want to be a princess? This book was very appropriate for their ages and has furthered not only their knowledge of God but their relationship with Him also. I highly recommend this book!

Great Devotional Bible for Kids.......2007-06-08

My 4 yr. old grandaughter loves her new Devotional Bible. The stories are understandable even to a 4 yr. old. The questions make her think and she always knows the right answer. I feel this book will help in shaping her into the kind of young woman God wants her to be.

My granddaughter has been in love with princesses since meeting Sleeping Beauty at age 2 1/2.She has every princess costume there is.She also has heard stories of Queen Esther and other Bible Ladies. I gave the Princess Devotional Bible for her 4th birthday ahead of all the other dolls and toys. She was delighted and I sensed there was a special sacred attachment for it.Immediately she wanted to take her Princess Bible to church. The one drawback for me was NO pictures or illustrations of what these women might have resembled. If the adage is true, "a picture is worth a thousand words" that would be my one suggestion. A great little book.

This is a great book for those of you with little girls. I have a 3 and a 5 yr-old and they are so "girly" it's just funny. They love anything to do with "princess." To read about God and refer to our girls as His princesses was just a truly wonderful concept. I'm very glad to have purchased this adorable white and PINK book... very colorful and very fun. My princesses sure do love it! If your little one is a princess with a heartfelt love of PINK, you must consider this one!

For fans of the British royal family, this book is a must-read. While it may be a trifle dated and decidedly unsensational, the book holds a unique place in the now vast array of books about the royals because it was the first to break the rules and reveal details of life behind the gilded doors of Buckingham Palace. "Crawfie," who cared for Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret for 17 years, was completely cut off by the royal family after the book was published, but the book itself lives on as a kind of time capsule of royal life before the press declared open season on the royal family.

Truly, this book is a national treasure and even the Queen should cherish it (apprently, she does not). After reading it, I have new-found respect for Elizabeth II and her family. No where else would you find such wonderful detail of the lovely lives these little girls led. Its also very revealing to see another side of the abdication of her uncle, King Edward VIII. I couldn't put it down and was left wanting more!

absolutely fascinating story of Nanny Crawford which brings to life how the Royal Family live. I cannot understand why the Royals thought it was disrespectful to write this and cut Nanny Crawford off for the rest of her life. I wonder what the real reason was?

A lovely portrait of royalty as it used to be, painted in the words of a woman who devoted years of her life to royalty's service. "Crawfie," as a very young Princess Elizabeth nicknamed her new governess, had no idea when she accepted the post that she would be staying for more than a short time. She'd come to help the Duke and Duchess of York begin their little girls' education, after which Miss Crawford fully intended to take up the classroom teaching career of which she had always dreamed. She wasn't planning on growing to love Elizabeth and Margaret as she did. Nor had she any clue that one of her charges would someday sit on England's throne.

The interlude Miss Crawford planned to spend with the Yorks lasted until after Princess Elizabeth's marriage. As a member of their household, she experienced history first hand when the abdication of King Edward VIII - otherwise known as "Uncle David" - forced her employers to give up their private, comfortable, family-centered life. She kept their daughters out of harm's way during the frightening war years that soon followed; and after the war's end, helped the family that by now considered her indispensible in guiding its "little princesses" from adolescence into womanhood.

Charming, but in no way saccharine, this recently re-released book provides invaluable insight into the character of the woman who has reigned for more than half a century as Queen Elizabeth II. Not by any means just for "royal watchers"!

This was the very FIRST book to present Royalty as human beings --and as such, it truly got its authoress, (to use the contemporary term), into much trouble with the English Royal family, whom she worked for in the capacity of Governess to the two Royal Princesses, Pss. Elizabeth and Pss. Margaret Rose, from the 1930s until they were grown young women -- and in Pss. Elizabeth's case, married.

This is the GENUINE article -- a first-person reminisence, the
REAL story of what went on behind the palace walls in the 1930s, 1940s, and early 1950s. It is great reading for royal-watchers, as one can almost feel oneself actually there, a "fly on the wall" as it were, to these auspicious royal happenings. And seeing the royal personages themselves, through Ms. Crawford's eyes: the dilligent and almost too-dutiful Pss. Elizabeth, the rather diffident, but still very brave Duke of York who became George VI, the artistic, rebellious, and elfin Pss. Margaret, the warm, friendly, yet very, very Royal Queen Elizabeth, the King's Consort, and the extremely regal, yet still very human
Queen Mary.

I got this book out of the school library when I was in college....but was so excited to have found it, that I just skimmed it. However, I have recently bought a copy, and am forcing myself to read it all the way through! So far I am only up to the Abdication of King Edward VIII -- but I realize this is a true turning point, and am loathe to go futher, though I know I must. Never, (believe it or not), was there ever such a reluctant couple to mount the throne of England as George
VI and Elizabeth -- the responsibilites, and separation from their children, were great burdens to them. The "fairy-tale" existance they had as the very private Duke and Duchess of York was no more.....

Later on, of course, WWII intruded even more into the Royal lives, changing royal routine even more.....forever.

It is interesting to see, even in the professed "simplicity" of the Princesses pre-war, (and post-war), lives, that little luxuries were taken for granted, even so. As a small child, Princess Elizabeth plays with imaginary ponies before going to bed, later graduating to toy ponies, and stil later, to real horses. Large grounds, many servants, and many homes complete the picture.....and even though Ms. Crawford does give some middle-class amazement at some of the priviledges, others are just taken as natural for her royal employers. I find myself wondering how the Princesses would have reacted, had they suddenly found themselves, "Twilight-Zone"-like, waking up to suddenly find themselves, instead, as Ruby and Margaret McDonald -- the Princesses' real-life sister-maids. (Probably,
the Dutiful Elizabeth would have taken it as a matter of course....but the independent and talented Margaret Rose would have definitely rebelled!)

Still, this is truly a book to cherish and delight in...especially if one wishes, secretly or not so secretly, to imagine oneself one (or both) of the Royal Sisters. There are
many royal secrets in this book too -- such as Queen Mary's
recommended "royal pick-me-up receipie", and the fact that the secret of the perfectly coiffed hairdos of the royal ladies, even after hours in a car, lay in the fact that the Royal cars were, in fact, hermetically sealed!

I can understand why the Royal Family were so upset that this book -- which doesn't critize them, but merely shows all their human strengths, and some of their all-too-human weaknesses. Royals are supposed to be 100% perfet. This book shows them to be 100% Human. Secrets are shared. And -- contrary to Baghot's
admonition -- light is, indeed, shed on the magic.

In the end, however, Ms. Crawford, (who had married just before
Princess Elizabeth herself did), left all of her papers and
diaries, etc. to her royal employers -- the very ones she had once been so close to, but who had cut her off, completely, from their lives, once "The Little Princesses" was published. It is a sad thing for curious commoners, such as myself -- for no matter how many authors write about the Royal Family of England, none, I feel, will have as intimacy with their royal material as Miss Crawford did. (With the possible exception of Paul Burrell, and Stephen Birmingham, valets to Princess Diana and the pre-married Prince Charles, respectively.) For English -- and perhaps other royals -- now reqire a signed statement from their possible servants, before employment, not to disclose anything of their employment in future books. This is another reason why "The Little Princesses" is such a true classic: the reality of the book was recorded without any constraint or even thought of constraint.
This alone makes the "fairy-tale become reality" sense of this book even more genuine -- and to royal-watchers, even more precious.

So this book -- and the others written by Marion Crawford -- are the true and genuine articlesw -- 24-karat gold, amongst all the other books on the royals, no matter how well written, or how engrossing.

"The Little Princesses" is thus not only a wonderful, involving, exciting, and easily-read book.... It is a piece of history, in and of itself.
