ESL teaching.......2007-02-06
This book is very understandable and it highlights the theories of learning. It also has some case studies for further information, and some related readings for furthere knowledge. I think it is very useful for teachers who want to learn ESL. My classmates and I (grad students) are able to also extend the theories in this book with more outside material to make it fun to make presentations in our class. I do not think I will be selling this book.
Making it happen.......2006-07-30
I think this book is very informative and useful for teaching ESL. The chapters are not too long and are straight to the point. I would recommend this book to others who want to learn strategies for teaching to ESL (English Second Language) students.
making it happen: from interactive to participatory language teaching, third edition.......2006-02-25
It's a great book for an ESL/TESL teacher that focus on participatory teaching and encourages the teacher to reflect upon his/her own teaching.Besides, there are many good examples that help the teacher to think about a better lesson plan.

This is the one I have been looking for........2007-06-30

Competent Update to the Stevens Classic.......2007-06-19
This book consists of "in the trenches" information Mr. Stevens learned over the years by reading source, testing thoroughly, documenting extensively, and assembling carefully all this data into one heck of a book on Unix programming. I feel certain in declaring that many who've developed code on Unix know instantly of Stevens' works. This update to his book appears just as thorough.
I do agree with a previous reviewer who was unhappy with the code samples' dependency on a header file in the back of the book. It's a clumsy technique, but it's difficult to imagine another way to accomplish the goals of including the header.
A piece of art.......2007-04-11
This book is excellent. I had previously bought "Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment" by the same author and I loved it so now that I have to do network programming in Linux I got a copy of UNP. The book is well organized and has a lot more information than I expected (Raw sockets, Packet capture, IPv6 etc). Everything is explained clearly and with a lot of examples. It's a shame that the author passed away because I would buy any other book he wrote. Buy this book, it's expensive but It's so professional that is a "must have" for anyone that's going to be programming network applications in UNIX systems.
Thank you, Richard Stevens. Rest in Peace.
4½ stars -- minor gripes.......2006-11-09
The book contains everything that I want to know about the Unix Sockets API. The book is well structured, and the explanations are generally good. I would give it 4½ stars if it was possible.
I do have a few minor gripes though. The text can be a bit dull compared to other books. I bought "Programming with POSIX(R) Threads" by David R. Butenhof at the same time, and this book is much more entertaining while still factual and correct.
I dislike that all the examples in the book uses a special header defined in the Appendix. That makes it impossible to use snippets of code from the examples to make your own applications.
Brilliant. A definitive work........2006-08-27
This is by far the most comprehensive, easy to understand book regarding Unix Network Programming I have come across. Professors in most major university treat teaching unix network programming like brain surgery, they make it as difficult as possible. The book explain every concept in an easy to understand language, TCP, UDP,SCTP, etc, you name it is all here. There is so much to learn from this book for all users novice and advanced and it also makes an excellent reference book. Every unix network programmer should have this book by their side, this is the unix networking programming bible. Like we say in wall street, a great investment, highly recommended.
Book Description
Quantum-Touch is the touch-based healing technique that uses the chi of both practitioner and client, bringing them into harmony to allow the body to heal itself. Quantum-Touch differs from other healing techniques because it does not require long years of study and presents none of the common hurdles of understanding or application; anyone can learn to use it to become a healer, both of others and of self. In this new edition of his best-selling guide, Richard Gordon leads the reader step by step, clearly explaining how to use breathing and body-focusing techniques to raise one's energy levels. Once that is achieved, the healer can correct posture and alignment, reduce pain and inflammation, help balance emotional distress, and even heal pets. Above all, Quantum-Touch can be used in tandem with all other healing modalities, including Western medicine, and its efficacy has been attested to by physicians, acupuncturists, chiropractors, and other healing professionals.

One Minute Hip realignment.......2007-07-31
Richard Gordon writes with such clarity, caring and love, and the drawings and photos are wonderful. This is a superbly helpful book, easy to follow and learn from. After months of seeing a chiropractor with a rotation in my hips, the problem was gone in about two minutes by just following the simple breathing-touch exercise shown in the book for hip alignment. My husband (a "nonbeliever") positioned his hands lightly and breathed energy as I instructed reading from the book, and lo and behold, my hips aligned themselves. No pain, no complicated procedure. Simple and direct, and I am so very thankful! Just that healing alone more than paid for the price of this invaluable book.
This stuff does work.......2007-07-26
I'm just an occasional user of the healing arts. I started out learning w/ Healing Touch from a gifted practitioner who told me about it. When I tried it on my mother, the pains would just radiate into my arms and I'd feel drained after a session. Then I found Quantum Touch and combined therapies. After more than a year later and only several tries, I can now do a session on my mother without the pain or drain associated with it. While watching her vital signs monitor, I saw some normalization in her breathing and heart beat while running energy on her vs. when I stopped running energy.
I also tried the coca cola trick and it does remove the carbonation, but for me, it does take time and concentration. Not bad at all for a newbie who's never done this before.
I only gave it 4 stars because the publication itself had misquoted pages numbers and I had to search for the correct page. Other than that, it's very easy to learn and has made a huge difference when I use it.
Fun stuff. Who knows, maybe I'll make a career out of this.
Almost perefect.......2007-05-19
This book is excellent in covering the basics of Quantum Touch therapy as well as presenting some very valuable tips on how to condcut a healing session properly. These tips are applicable to other healing modalities and not just Quantum Touch. The reason I gave the book four stars is because the exercises lack a more thorough description which makes it somewhat harder to learn on one's own. However, if you are not yet familiar with what Quantum Touch really is and are looking for a solid, down-to-earth, practical and effective healing modality, this is the book to read.
Quantum Touch.......2007-04-05
I stumbled upon this book, it is the teaching book to the course Quantum Touch. It is so easy to read and learn the techniques they are putting forth. If you are interested in hands-on healing this book is a must!
It tells you all about how it works, and case studies. It teaches you very simply how to use the healing energy to help yourself and others.
Helpful information.......2007-03-26
I bought this book along with Energy Medicine and find both very helpful. I work with energy healing and they are both enlightening and useful with my EFT practice.

excellent resource for clinical rounds or every day practice.......2007-03-10
As a veterinary student, I have found myself using this book on a weekly basis. If you are looking for a quick overview of specific diseases or a complete description of diseases you are learning for the first time, this book is an excellent resource to have in your collection. Every practicing veterinarian should have this text in their library collection.
Best SAM Book!.......2007-01-28
I'm a veterinary and even though this book wasn't on my school's book list, I took the advice of a veterinarian that I worked with and bought this book. It is so good! It has a little bit more information than my professor;s notes, but nothing crazy. If you are a vet student I would for sure recommend this book even if it isn't on your school's book list. It's written very simply and isn't "wordy" as many of the texts can be. There are lots of diagrams and pictures to help out. I love this book!
One of the best SA Medicine books out there.......2006-02-24
I love the book. It is an excellent reference for my practice.
Beats Ettinger Hands Down.......2002-06-14
That pretty much sums it up. This book is a lot more user friendly. Ettinger's is good for those in acedemia. Nelson & Couto is for those in the "real world".
Vet Students Agree.......2002-05-06
I recently consulted with a group of advanced veterinary students on which of the small animal internal medicine texts would be the most useful to me. For the record, I am an allied health professional with more background in human medicine. I looked at this text and Ettinger's, which--again!--my sources kept referring to as the bible of small animal internal medicine. Ettinger was only about $30 more than this text, and as a big two-volume set, it looked like a better deal at first glance. However, this text is FAR more user-friendly, and there were sections that I read right away out of sheer interest. Unless you are a vet student planning to make a meaningful investment in heavy books, this book is likely to meet your needs and do so in a relatively painless way.

Review from a Focus Group Moderator.......2006-07-26
If you're looking for practical information that you can apply quickly, I suggest picking up this book. You'll flip through it time and again. As the owner of www.MyFocusGroupModerator.com, I see a lot of poorly written material. Krueger has done a good job in making this guide immediately impactful to the reader.
Helpful guide to focus groups.......2005-09-20
Kreuger and Casey's book provided helpful information for conducting focus groups to novice practioners. From room arrangement to recruitment, the guide covered all the basics.
Focus groups.......2002-02-25
This was a wonderful guide for conducting focus groups for beginners. The book is easy to read and understand. I highly recommend it for anyone who is interested in conducting focus group research.
User friendly - not research friendly.......2000-09-20
This book contains a great deal of information about conducting focus groups and is very easy to use; however, the format is far too simplistic. Focus groups are a research technique; this book takes the approach of "so easy even a child could do it." Although it is filled with information and guidelines about appropriate techniques and uses for data, the lighthearted format undermines the serious nature of data collection and analysis. The second edition was much better as a comprehensive guide to focus groups that maintained some research integrity.
Incidentally, I suspect that Paladin Red actually reviewed the second edition. The third edition does not contain appendices after each chapter - another unfortunate loss from the earlier edition.
A superb research guide!.......2000-06-21
Krueger's book on focus groups has been by far the most useful guide in terms of the step-by-step approach used. Everything from concise budgeting techniques to handling those "difficult" participants are outlined neatly and in a straight-forward fashion. The appendices after each chapter are also really helpful especially for beginner researchers such as myself. I borrowed this book from the library for a summer marketing research job and it was all I needed for the focus group portion. Recommended to me by my marketing prof, I in turn highly recommend it!

a great book for those new to physics.......2002-09-29
As a college student, I always hoped for easy-to-understand textbooks every semester. This book met my expectations! It is taught from a non-calculus point of view...but those of us that know calculus will know how to deal with the myriad of equations that you encounter in physics.
Jones and Childers have put a great textbook together. The chapters are very easy to understand--concepts are explained thoroughly, and then supplemented with examples that are solved step by step and the results are discussed. The figures are drawn well--even things like relativity and quantum mechanics make more sense after reading this book!
To summarize--if this is the textbook for your class, you are in luck. Buy it...if you are interested in physics at all, you will enjoy the book. If you are looking for a book to help learn concepts in physics, and want a textbook, this one is for you too! Compared to all the other textbooks out there, this is one of the top two (Serway's book being the other).
A Contemporary Review of "Contemporary College Physics".......2001-11-03
This book is very well written, due to the choices of sentences and words. The sentences are to the point and not like MANY physics books who dance around the topic. In addition to having carefully chosen examples that illustrates its point clearly.
The book also has nice illustrations printed on nice paper, unlike other EXPENSIVE books printed on "cheap" paper. The book includes all the topics other books would cover in two volumes and hence would cost significantly more. I highly recommend this text for anyone (including poor students like me)!! ;)
This is an answer book only! This is not the textbook!.......1999-10-03
This book is advertised as something it is not. Do not order this book if you want the textbook! This book offers answers to the questions in the text ONLY!

Provided you have some previous basic exposure to C and Unix, Beginning Linux Programming delivers an excellent overview of the world of Linux development with an appealing range of essential tools and APIs.
The standout feature of Beginning Linux Programming is its wide-ranging coverage of important topics in basic Unix programming. In a series of short chapters, the authors discuss the basics of writing Unix programs in C, with material on basic system calls, file I/O, interprocess communication (for getting programs to work together), and advanced topics such as socket programming and how to create Unix device drivers.
Parallel to this, the book introduces the toolkits and libraries for working with user interfaces, from simpler terminal mode applications to X and GTK+ for graphical user interfaces. While you won't be an authority on X or GTK+ after reading this book, you will certainly be able to explore real Linux development on your own after the capable introductory guide provided here. Really a good book for begginner.......2007-01-11
Well the book is self explanotary and helps a new bee to understand easly the concepts of linux programmming
Great book.......2006-10-18
I bought this book 1996 when I was in high school. It was challenging, and now when I returned to it in 2006, I realize how much I skipped on my 96' reading. The great thing with this book (at least the 96 edition) is that is has such a nice flow. You will learn the concepts of Unix programming, introduced in a perfect order and pace.
The source code compiles with no problems.
Not worth it.......2006-10-09
As a true beginner, I had a lot of trouble understanding the concepts in the book. It did not give nearly as many examples as were necessary nor was the presentation beginner friendly. I wouldn't recommend this book... unfortunately, I don't know of a good alternative.
Excellent, extremely readable from page 1.......2006-07-21
As an absolute beginner in Linux, this book has answered most of my questions and took me out of my closed 'windows' based mentality. I warmly recommend it.
Great C system programming book, C pragrammer saver.......2006-05-02
Thank You to authors of this book!
This is surely the best C system programming book I have read. I will trade 1000 system programming book for this. The main reason it so well written is because the author(s) know how to bring you in to system programming in Lunix environment and they know HOW to teach, un-like university lecture's. There is not much good system programming books out there, many are for advance programmer.
Simple people like me find it hard to follow other system programming books. However this book allow reader to pretty much start off in any chapter as you wish. Very few book allow this, many force you to read from being to end. Which is not what you want.
I remember want I was listening and read lecture notes & text books in university I know little.
I find the lectures help little or none at all most of the time, when I spend 4-5 months on a unit. After I some-how pass the system programming unit. I go the book shop and find this book. After one read of one hours in book shop, I have understand equal to 1 months of working very hard for 6hour a day and around $670 Australian. After I buy this book $66 Australian and read it for 2 months I have a new level of understanding that surprise my-self with it. This book may many thing very easy to understand unlike uni lecture and their notes.
This author start a class and teach, and if they do I will surely be there! They know how to teach.
I can tell you I not smart at all, but if I can follow this book, I think anyone can.

Book Description
Golosa is a two-volume, introductory Russian-language program that strikes a balance between communication and structure. It takes a contemporary approach to language learning by focusing on the development of competence in the four skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), as well as the expansion of cultural knowledge. Each section in the text revolves around a topic and follows the same format: introduction of basic vocabulary, listening to introductory conversations, short dialogues with exercises and role play practice, practice in strategies for listening and reading, and grammar study with practice in both oral and written form. With its robust audio and video program on the World Wide Web, Golosa provides comprehensive explanations of Russian grammar along with the practice users need to build accuracy. This program is useful for those employees in fields where a working knowledge of Russian is necessary.

Perfectly adequate textbook.......2004-12-07
I used this textbook in the second half of an intensive Russian class I took in college. (Used Golosa Book 1 for Russian 1.) It follows the standard textbook format: Each chapter introduces a grammatical concept and new vocabulary. There are a few short dialogues and several exercises to reinforce the grammar and vocabulary. There are also exercises at the beginning to practice cursive in the cyrillic alphabet. At the end of the book there was a grammar reference so it was easy to review and brush up on previous lessons. It was a perfectly good textbook to use as part of a class.
In this case I also used the workbook and tape set. The workbook has additional exercises for each chapter in the book. It helped, but isn't necessary since things are covered in enough detail in the book. The tapes were helpful for picking up on how to pronounce words, but by Russian 2 I had gotten the pronunciation right and they weren't so useful. Basically they contain spoken versions of the dialogues in the text and a few simple exercises. They just supplement the text and don't add to it.
This and Golosa Book 1 is a good textbook set to use as part of a class. I used it in college but it would also work for highschool. It did a pretty good job of explaining things and covered the concepts adequately. Teachers will want to know that there is a third edition out now.
If you are trying to learn Russian on your own: If you are at the level where you can study a second year book on you own, then using these texts to review and brush up on grammar would be fine. If you are not to a point where you can pick up a second year Russian text book and follow it then you should pick up a tape and book set designed specifically to teach you Russian on your own.
Overall a wonderful text for guided- or self- study!.......2000-06-25
I studied Russian in some capacity for almost 5 years now. As a russophile one runs into many text that offer little explanation to make this complex language more easily understood. This book is certainly not one of them! The Grammar review sections are perfect whether you are advancing your study by yourself, or you are reviewing for a test in a class. The vocablary sections are complete and well organized. This the second Golosa book focuses even more on authentic texts than the first volume. My only complaints include: the glossary--it is not a complete enough to serve as a useful tool; the cultural sections--on rare occasion are not complete enough to avoid broad generalizations; and the illustrations are childlike and not always clear. Nonetheless, this is a text that must be included in every Russian language student's reference library!
