Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a Gift from God.......2006-03-26

I spent far too long in a verbally and emotionally abusive relationship. I thought it was my duty to stay because I had entered a covanent. A pastor told me that should I leave my marriage, I would have to be alone for the rest of my days unless my abusive husband took another wife or died. I was encouraged over and over to turn the other cheek and remember 77*7 and forgive.

But God heard my cries and led me to a book called Changes that Heal, and I learned that grace would always be available to me. I left my husband and filed for divorce. My abusive husband then pursued me (as is classic in the abuse cycle), was baptized and began to attend my church. The pastors began encouraging me to give my marriage and my husband an opportunity to repent for the sake of our daughter. I kept trying to explain that they didn't understand the abuse or the mind of the abuser enough to encourage more 77*7 (forgiveness). Eventually I relented and my daughter and I moved back in with the abuser.

The abuser was on a roll. He had won. The pattern started again within three months. Within a year, he was constantly used the bible to tell me that I was to obey him and stay with the abuse no matter what. A year later in a rage he threatened a neighbor with a gun in the presence of my daughter, and I walked away for good. But my heart was not at peace.

This book brought me peace like nothing else I've ever experienced. It explained God's views to me in a light I wished I had understood years ago. God is a God of love and grace. This book will teach you how that applies to walking away from abuse. Long suffering was Jesus' role, not the role of the abused spouse. I wished I could hug everyone of you that reads this, because you need someone who has been there and understands. God bless you. Read this book and begin taking care of yourself, the child God loves so much.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for abused Christian women.......2002-11-21

This is a great book for Christian women. I am a victim and was concerned about what the Bible and the Lord would think about me having to get away of my husband because I was in fear of my life. This book points out specific scriptures of what the Bible says about husband's and wives staying together or apart and why it is okay to get away from your husband if he is abusive. I no longer feel guilty about having to get away from my husband. This is an absolutely fabulous book and I would recommend it for any woman who has been abused by her husband.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended by a Police Officer and Counselor.......2002-06-28

As a trainer of police officers on domestic violence response, and as a counselor of survivors, I highly recommend this book for all who suspect they are experiencing intimate partner abuse. It is also very important for family and friends. I have given away at least 20 copies to survivors and will continue to. Religion and faith are a foundation for the worldview of many and Ms. Fortune shows us all how scripture, used properly, can support and liberate victims. Keep copies of this book in stock for your clients, family members, and friends.

5 out of 5 stars Restoring spiritual sanity to abused Christian women.......1999-09-28

This book was purchased and distributed by our local Domestic Violence Shelter to women who's faith stood in the way of their safety and sanity regarding whether or not it is God's will for them to live with abuse. I hope to buy more booklets to have available for this dedicated population.

5 out of 5 stars Honest helpful and loving advice.......1999-03-17

This little book is quick to read and will help give you courage to do what is right. Sometimes Christian women get so bogged down in guilt and the need to save our marriage, that we forget to save ourselves. This book is a must read for anyone in an abusive marriage seeking spiritual guidance. Solid, Christlike interpretation of scripture will offer much needed inspiration and encouragement.

I love this book. One of my business partners who I admire referred this book to me to help me work out some problems I was having in my business. Your Faith Is Your Fortune is a book that I will be reading many times during my lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars The Color Of Faith .......2007-01-04

Like all of Neville's books and lectures, this book exceeds conventional thought and takes the reader on a splendid ride to the depths of what true faith means.......your consciousness on a soul level is where all lies and to tap into that incredible source is to open all doors to a treasure beyond your own wildest dreams. The reading of this book inspired my poem "The Color Of Faith."

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS A TREASURE!.......2006-09-24

I had to order this book because I couldn't find it in the bookstores, or the library. After reading this book, I cannot help but wonder why this guy -"NEVILLE" is not more available! I came across Neville via reading what "other people who bought this book also bought" here on AMAZON. I went on the reviews/ratings and decided to buy the book. I was NOT disappointed! This is a fabulous book!

I have been reading metaphysical type books for a while now, and I have a feeling that a lot of the other, more recent authors of metapysical self-help type books have probably read and studied books by "Neville" before they wrote their books. The thing is, this book has information that I hadn't read anywhere else before.

The title page has a sentence under the title that says:
"Man's faith in God is measured by his confidence in himself" -Well, that struck me as interesting right off the bat.
Neville says that "When man sees the Bible as a great psychological drama with all of its characters and actors as the personified qualities and attributes of his own conciousness, then-and then only- will the Bible reveal to him the light of its symbology." The author reveals what many of the popular stories in the Bible really mean.

As I was reading this, I was thinking about the material that is presented here, and I wondered why I hadn't come across this gem of a book earlier. Then I realized that all things come to us at just the right time. I can see where, depending on one's beliefs, the material here could well be rejected by some who have been conditioned to beleive differently. As far as that goes, I feel that each one of us knows when something rings true for us, as well as when it doesn't. That's the thing you have to look for in any information that comes across your path.... ask yourself if it feels right for you.

This book really made me think about things differently. In a positive way. To me, this book is a treasure!

5 out of 5 stars Your Faith Is Your Fortune.......2005-07-19

Wonderfully insightful book as are all of the books I have read by Neville. The world should read it and heed it.

5 out of 5 stars Neville explains the Bible's spiritual meaning........2003-03-11

I study Neville's material daily and can honestly verify that he is a very outstanding teacher, mystic and Bible scholar. In this volume that is Neville's first and perhaps most mystical book, he explains the meaning of different biblical events.

The book consists of rather short chapters. Each chapter is devoted to a certain biblical theme which Neville takes into discussion. Then he will proceed to explain you the spiritual and psychological truths that the theme includes.

This book is about spiritual awakening and understanding the power of your consciousness... not so much about self-help as self-help is generally understood as get-rich quickly scheme.

If you are looking for get-rich-quick books -- this title is not for you. However, if you seek to understand the deeper meaning of the Bible - this is a book to buy.

If you think you know your Bible, I challenge you to buy this book for your perception is going to change as a result of reading this book.

Very informative.

The Reichmanns' astonishing saga began in Hungary and swept through Austria, France, and North Africa before achieving apotheosis in Canada, where the secretive, ultra-orthodox Jewish family founded Olympia & York Development, the greatest real estate empire in the world at its peak in the 1980s. The company's collapse into bankruptcy in 1992 is a modern cautionary tale of biblical proportions, rendered by business journalist Anthony Bianco in lavish detail backed by formidable research. Interviews with various family members enable the author to plumb personalities as well as profit motives; their decision to cooperate is justified by his careful fairness.

The Reichmanns

The book, "The Reichmanns; Family, Faith, Fortune and The Empire of Olympia & York" by Anthony Bianco is a 668 page mind boggling tale of a family dynasty that came from nowhere and rose to one of the most wealthy families in the world in one generation. The book explains how through Paul Reichmann's insatiable drive and willingness to parlay the profit from each successful project into a much larger endeavor, their wealth exploded to over $10 billion at the peak, just before risking everything on Canary Warf on London's East End.

At times it's a bit of a fight to get through the sections that are not related to business and real estate, but those sections give you a good idea about the family's morals and values and bring you closer to understanding their thinking.

A memorable section is when they braved the NYC real estate slump of 1976 - 1997 and purchased eight skyscrapers from the Uris Building Corporation for $46 million down. Within a decade the package would have a value of over $3 billion.

The book is packed with similar anecdotes that both inspire and encourage someone wanting to build a real estate fortune of their own.

By Kevin Kingston author of, "A 20,000% Gain in Real Estate"

4 out of 5 stars Details of a lost culture and a lost business empire.......2001-06-24

The book discusses in great detail the Reichmann family's role both in Jewish culture over the last couple hundred years and in the real estate developement business over the last 40 or so years.

The part I liked the best was the descriptions of 18th and 19th century Jewish life in the "oberland"(sp?) of Hungary. A lost culture, thanks not only to the Nazis but also to Jewish Emancipation.

In a way, it is inspirational, as it shows how one family managed to integrate a healthy, traditional religious expression with philanthropy and business acumen. It also shows that you cannot understand what makes that family "tick" without understanding the rich culture and religion of orthodox jewishness.

The greatest strength of this book, in my opinion, is that it is a _history_ of the family and its business, religious, philanthropic, and cultural dealings. It isnt the hagiography that so many business biographies in the popular press tend to be.

4 out of 5 stars Paul at the helm.......2000-06-09

As the Reichmanns anticipate another rush to the top of the heap we shall watch with amazed eyes as this family woos our imagination, yet again! As renowned as the Reichmanns have been there are still followers of scrappy success stories that do not know much about what this family, with brother and son Paul at the helm, contributed to New York City's skyline. The World Financial Center was a creation of their delicately named Olympia & York. Read this from beginning to end so that you can grasp the rise and fall and now, again, rise of this amazing family. As is usually indicative of most business minds through time, the children are not as capable as the original "originators" themselves.

4 out of 5 stars Better than a soap opera.......2000-05-03

For those interested in real estate development, I recommend skipping through the first half of the book and starting at page 256. From there on it is fascinating reading on the possibilities of development for those with seemingly infinite capital on hand. Paul Reichmann's passion, drive and high tolerance for risk makes for better reading than most novels.

1 out of 5 stars Inacurate and Unfair!.......1999-07-11

Though well researched and well written, the author accepts rumour as facts, and thus published reports of personal misconduct which are totally false. It does not do justice to the tragic story of the collapse of the fortunes of a family that was world reknowed for their kindness and generosity. For those that were acquainted with the true facts, and recognize the Reichmans as the great men that they truly are, this book is a travesty.

Book Description

Lately the headlines have delivered dispiriting news about wrongdoing and scandal in business. But behind the headlines lies a surprising, untold story: Corporate America is changing for the better. Faith and Fortune tells the stories of the extraordinary people who are leading the way and the admirable companies they have built.

This book is called Faith and Fortune because faith provides the fuel that energizes these people as they strive to do business better and to find meaning in their work. Some have faith in God; others do not. But all have faith in the goodness of people and in the possibility of change. Most of all, they believe that corporations can become a powerful force for good in the world, and that they can—and should—serve people and not the other way around.

Faith and Fortune argues that an exciting new model of conducting business is taking hold, not only in small, socially responsible companies like Ben & Jerry’s but inside such bulwarks of the Fortune 500 as Ford, Citigroup, and DuPont. Bit by bit, almost imperceptibly, this new model is replacing a century-old approach that was rooted in the industrial era and looked at business as a series of discrete, win-lose transactions: Executives tried to pay their workers and suppliers as little as possible, charge their customers as much as they could, and maximize their short-term profits. Today, by contrast, forward-thinking executives build their businesses by developing a network of long-lasting, win-win relationships. Great companies serve their workers, customers, shareholders, and the common good.

Powerful forces are driving these changes, including the desire of companies to attract and engage their workforce, the emergence of the 1960s’ generation to positions of corporate power, the spirituality-in-the-workplace movement, the rise of social investing, and the growth and sophistication of activist groups.

At once realistic and inspiring, Faith and Fortune profiles companies and people who represent the best of business and exemplify these new values. Among the stories told here:

• UPS creates opportunities for immigrants and minorities, promotes from within, and provides its people with a much-valued sense of community

• Southwest Airlines, the fun-loving airline, has built the concept of servant leadership into its storied culture

• Starbucks provides stock options and health insurance even to part-time workers and builds sustainable business models for coffee growers in the developing world

• Timberland has turned community services into a valuable corporate asset

Other companies profiled here include Hewlett-Packard, Herman Miller, Staples, PepsiCo, Domini Social Investments, Tom’s of Maine, and Greyston Bakery. The book also includes a chapter exploring what the great religious traditions have to teach today’s businesspeople about creating sustainable enterprises and an analysis of the business case for corporate social responsibility.

Faith and Fortune is a thoughtful, original, and important book that will reshape the debate about the role of business in America.

“I arrived at this book as an avowed, vocal skeptic of the ‘spirituality-in-business movement.’ I departed as a...convert. Even cynics should devour this marvelous book. Marc Gunther makes a compelling case that the right things matter—and pay off; yet he exudes not a dollop of naiveté.”—Tom Peters, author of Re-imagine! and Thriving on Chaos

“In his provocative inquiry into the nature of modern American business, Marc Gunther looks into the darkness of corporate greed and scandal and, in the shadows cast by the likes of Enron and WorldCom, sees a beacon of hope in companies in which profits and values coexist.”—David Wessel, Deputy Washington Bureau Chief & Capital columnist, Wall Street Journal

“Marc Gunther’s Faith and Fortune is a book of hope. It offers the opportunity to open your mind and your heart in your pursuit of a meaningful life. Its well-drawn examples will deepen your ability to see how leaders can use business as a force that creates true personal wealth and public prosperity.”—Dr. Mark S. Albion, author of Making a Life, Making a Living

“With the keen eye of a seasoned business writer and the gentle confidence of a trusted storyteller, Marc Gunther masterfully provides an insider’s view into the faith-at-work movement—the quiet revolution that is transforming corporate America. After reading Faith and Fortune, you can’t help but wonder, now why can’t I do that in my organization?” —Dr. David W. Miller, executive director of the Yale Center for Faith & Culture, and the former president of the Avodah Institute

“Faith and Fortune offers hope that there is a better way than business as usual. Marc Gunther clearly illustrates that by linking corporate values to personal values; the business leaders profiled in this book have created a new model for addressing the world's problems in these complicated times. This thought-provoking book should be a ‘must read.’”—Timothy E. Wirth, president, United Nations Foundation

5 out of 5 stars Pearls Before Swine.......2005-09-07

I normally eschew religious writing as overly evangelical (regardless of the faith in question). I am also not a big fan of corporate window-dressing-writing. This wonderful book falls into neither category. Faith and Fortune, by Marc Gunther is a marvellous book. It inspires without pretending to have all the answers. For every person who has ever tried to justify socially conscious investing or companies that put some of their profits back into the community, this book is a must read. Unfortunately, this book apparently came out shortly before the 2004 election and did not get the publicity or audience it deserved. This is a terrible shame. Any thinking and moral person tries to combine her financial responsibilities (to her family, shareholders, whoever) with the need to live a moral and balanced life. As our world becomes more interconnected and more susceptible to the ripple effect from one person's actions, thinking about how to combine personal morality with the Darwinian need to succeed becomes more and more important. This book actually makes a great companian to Jared Diamond's Collapse: How Societies Succeed or Fail, which also touches on zero sum mentalities and how to expand the available resources through thinking more altruistically.

Faith and Fortune is inspiring and well-written. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling and Thoughtful.......2005-06-13

Actions speak louder than words; this is a book about the former. It's all well and good for pundits, preachers, and self-help gurus to opine on how we should run our lives in the real world. Faith and Fortune reports on certain businesses that strive for the ideal. Gunther is a true reporter, his research original and in depth. Herman Miller and Timbaland are two fine examples. I was vaguely familiar with both, and enjoyed learning about the core business, but the people behind them are fascinating. Combine this with Gunther's fluid, crisp, style and it's a book that resonates, that has staying power as a tome that should continue to sell. The thesis: that business can coexist, indeed thrive, when true sharing of good, fundamental values are embraced, that profit is not the only motive. Give an employee wings to advance, the opportunity to learn, reward loyalty, profit-share: it works for these companies profiled. Gunther weaves in philosophers, spiritual rubrics into these case studies so that the reader ponders the issues from a variety of viewpoints. In a world filled with cynicism, by the close of the last page, one is hopeful that all will turn out well. These companies did it. And they are profitable and happy. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A good read, but look for the follow-up.......2005-04-16

Faith and Fortune, subtitled "the quiet revolution to reform American business," by Mark Gunther of Fortune magazine, celebrates the usual socially responsible corporations and entrepreneurs for their endurance over more massive corporations that disappeared in the last years of the previous millennium as American business experienced its moral meltdown. But while duly celebrating human decency and commitment to others, this engaging book doesn't quite capture the changes in the "atmosphere" of the workplace that contributed to both the horror of Enron and the success of companies like Starbucks, Ben & Jerry's, and Timberland. Rather, Gunther gets on the moral values bandwagon (a characteristic of our age) by focusing on the concept of "values" as they apply--or should apply--to the business world.

I joined corporate America in the early `90s at what had once been John D Rockefeller's original company, Standard Oil of Ohio, and the overarching belief system was that markets would find a solution for everything. The company's social responsibility was still grounded in the same rigid Christian attitude of the founder's era--namely, that the poor were owed compassion and a handout. Over the following decade, the fall of the great tobacco empires--and their miscalculation that Washington, D.C., would never forget all their political donations--spurred self-scrutiny and the realization that nothing lasts forever, that companies need to pay more than lip service to the communities in which they operate, and that corporations need to foster trust among their numerous stakeholders.

Gunther tackles two themes. The first is that the admirable personal values of businesspeople, whatever their faith, need not be compromised in the world of business. Indeed, to project those values is often a characteristic of great products and services--the foundation of great companies. This theme is contrasted with the evaporation of major corporations through greed and fraud. Gunther probably sums up many people's beliefs when he states: "Enron's Ken Lay, meanwhile, was a trustee of one of the biggest Methodist churches in Houston; while he has not been charged with a crime, he is guilty, at the least, of fostering a culture of criminality, arrogance, and greed." Things have moved on a little since that sentence was written.

I would like to read the follow-up on what happens after poster kids of good corporate social responsibility are sold, such as Ben and Jerry's to Unlilever and Odwalla to Coca-Cola. How much does the culture of the parents rub onto the kids, or do/can they in fact change the culture of their parents? Do moral values and good behavior actually win over the desire to make a buck?

Finally, Gunther takes a look at another emerging trend--the increasing use of religious values to teach businesspeople (and presumably consumers) about creating sustainable and nature-friendly businesses.

Faith and Fortune covers familiar territory, but it's the follow-up that is going to be the true report card on how far U.S. society has really moved.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for the deeper businessman.......2005-03-19

If you are sick of corporate America's traditional way of conducting business, this book is for you. It reveals a way of thinking that not only improves performance, but creates value in the workplace.
Faith and Fortune helped me identify why I really want to get into the field of business. It has given me a more positive outlook on the future, and I am sure it will do the same for you.

5 out of 5 stars A New Business Paradigm-- Great Book!.......2005-02-14

Marc Gunther's superb Faith and Fortune explores a variety of businesses whose managers have been guided by values as well as by profit.

Two aspects of this book are especially compelling: (1)Gunther does not shy away from a discussion of spiritual values-- a subject often greeted with unease or disdain by the business community; and (2)Gunther reports the ups and downs of the companies he covers-- his book is honest, rather than a feel-good tract.

Gunther develops riveting profiles of executives who guide values-driven companies and their efforts to reconcile philosophy with the bottom line. An especfially dramatic example: the furniture company Herman Miller's painful downsizing after the decline of its business in the wake of the 2000-2001 downturn. Was the downsizing necessary? Yes. Was it wrenching for a company that prided itself on taking care of its workforce? Yes. And were the layoffs handled as hunanely as possible? Yes, again. As this suggests, values do not free companies from the need to make a profit-- indeed, the practice of values might raise the bar-- but Gunther introduces us to individuals who have achieved significant success in building more ethical companies while continuing to operate profitably, and that is something to cheer about. Even more cheering is that Gunther-- a senior writer for Fortune Magazine-- has explored this theme with sophistication and compassion, rather than with sentimentality, and that he has recorded both successes and setbacks.

Faith and Fortune honors businesspeople who have conducted themselves in ways consistent with the idea of a higher purpose, while continuing to grapple with the bottom line. The book is inspirational reading for the many in the corporate world who would like to see business make a positive difference, as well as for consumers interested in socially responsible purchasing or investing. Faith and Fortune also should be read widely in undergraduate and graduate business programs to spur discussion of alternative models for business success.

Bottom line: buy this book for a thought-provoking and inspiring read. And thanks to Mark Gunther for his sensitive and sophisticated handling of a worthy and sometimes controversial topic.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best book on the topic!.......2007-10-01

This is the best book on the topic of forgiveness. I've read over 20 books on the topic and find this book to be the most practical and most helpful of all. Chapter 2, for example, outlines what forgiveness is and is NOT! What an eye openener! I loved it and have read it many times. If you breathe or if you have parents, you need to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Forgive Liberally - Improve Your Life.......2007-08-11

Paul Meyer's book is an excellent treatise on how the inability to forgive can cripple an individual's outlook on life. At the same time, he does not recommend that the offended person make themselves a door matt. Forgiveness does not include giving up your values. If charges need to be brought, bring them, but forgive the individual for what he did to you. If money is owed, try to collect what you can, but give up the resentment that so frequently goes with the scenario. You don't have to continue the relationship, but you need to forgive. In the more usual situation, where you may need to forgive someone (probably not out loud - just to yourself), the offender usually isn't even aware of his thoughtlessness. Carrying around the perception of an insult only hurts the carrier.

The author was blessed with a mother who forgave everyone and a father who never forgave anyone. Other than that he was a good father, but it was clear to Meyer when he was a teen which parent had the happier life - his mother. He decided at that time that forgiveness was the way to go. Meyer was a hard worker, was good with people, made his first million by his late 20's, and has made countless millions since. His book is filled with examples where forgiveness - both withholding it and dispensing it liberally - has made all the difference in his own life and in the lives of others.

In the first chapter, Meyer states that that his book was written, not from an academic or theological perspective, but from a personal perspective. It is bad for you, personally, to carry around grudges and resentment. He follows through effectively on the last part, but religion is a major part of this book. If you cut out the pages where God and/or Jesus were mentioned, you would probably lose at least half the book. He may be splitting hairs about what constitutes "theology" and he may consider his religious outlook as part of his personal perspective - but in addition to the good practical advice he gives about how damaging it is to collect and carry around negative baggage about others, the book is definitely religious.

Some of the examples are a little too pat; some of the forgivers - missionaries to dangerous places whose family members have been killed, yet they stayed on and forgave - have a perspective so different from mine, I can't quite relate. But overall, Meyer gets across the message that lack of forgiveness is bad for you. Specifically, the people who need to forgive each other the most often are in your own family (again, most of the time, you don't need to do this out loud).

If you find the right spots, Meyer is giving this book away. My wife found two hundred or so copies of it at a Sunday morning church service and took 15 or so to distribute to relatives and friends. I must give him a "5" for altruism and his good, practical advice despite my minor objections.

4 out of 5 stars Practical.......2007-08-06

I recently was betrayed by my wife and have been struggling with certain aspects of forgiveness. As usual the Universe stepped in and I was given this book by the gentleman that does my hair. I was skeptical at first because Im not really a strict christian. I do believe in Christ but not the entire story of the bible etc. This book is actually very light on Christianity and very profound on forgiveness. It offers practical step and many persoanl stories about triumphs concerning forgiveness. Definitely recommended reading.

        Book Description

Faith, Hope and Charity is a story of three Gladiator biplanes flown by six volunteers from their base on Malta and fighting alone against the Italian ‘Regia Aeronautica’ between June and October 1940. The story is also about the bravery and spirit of the Maltese people who gave their lives to keep the aircraft in the air and the men who toiled to keep the runway fit to fly on.
The defense of Malta can justifiably be included among the epics of World War Two. The part played by ‘Faith’, ‘Hope’ and ‘Charity’ is symbolic of the courage and endurance displayed by the people of Malta during the struggle against vastly superior Axis Air Forces.
