There are many books that offer advice on making a change in one specific area of life—whether it is diet, fitness, career advancement, or relationships. The Five Essentials Program provides the integrated approach that really works to release the champion within and create lasting change.

fitting it all in.......2007-05-09
Most athletes feel torn between their sport, job, family and sleep. Too often we focus too much energy on one at the expense of the others. Achieving balance is key to a happy and fulfilling life. Carmichael reveals his own journey (including the struggles) to find this balance in his own life. A very personal look into how even elite athletes struggle to fit it all in. Includes recipes, meal plans and exercise programs, tailored to all fitness levels. Gives beginners a clear path to follow, and offers enough nutritional/balance advice for the advanced athlete seeking to excel without sacrificing other areas of life. Great message.
Good insight into a Performance Lifestyle.......2007-02-26
I'm a raving fan of Chris Carmichael. I thought there were great insights in this book about the idea of "Performance" and "winning" and how you can improve your lifestyle. The book does start really strong, and then seems to turn into a before-and-after diet and exercise book with pages of recipes, and it may seem to get a little bit sidetracked with discussion about improved sexual function. But I overlooked all that because the insights throughout, especially the candid ones from a pro like Chris are invaluable; they are important and can set you on a much better path than most diet and exercise books. This book is a significant departure from the usual stuff. Thanks Chris for putting out a book that really starts to get people thinking differently about their lifestyle.
Excellent read!!!.......2007-02-17
I already knew many of these theories of fitness, eating habits, and lifestyle, yet the reminder from Chris Carmichael came at a great time for me. This is a book that is very inspirational, and yet can produce consistent results if taken seriously.
Whole-Life Tips from Lance Armstrong's Trainer .......2007-01-17
Give credit to Chris Carmichael for not writing another book just focused on fitness. Instead, he takes a holistic approach to fitness, diet and relationships. Emphasizing the need for balance is key, but Carmichael is on stronger footing with the fitness and diet tips.
The only mild quibble I have with the book is that the bulk of it is comprised of recipes. The substantive content is a relatively quick read; if you backed out the recipes, you might barely have enough material to constitute a book.
Carmichael is effective in showing how, ironically, when he was starting up his own fitness business, he got so busy that he neglected his own diet and conditioning. If it can happen to him, it can happen to us.
more recipes.......2007-01-16
The book starts off strong. The reasons that Carmichael gives for writing it are reasons that any middle aged athlete or wanna-be can relate to - aging, schedule conflicts, obligations...
Unfortunately the book quickly becomes just another exercise and recipe book. At this point so much has been written about the pursuit of fitness that it's hard to keep it fresh.
One fitness aspect that Carmichael treats that few others do is agility. He has some agility tests and exercises that don't always show up in the typical 'how to' book.
As another reviewer stated, this book would be excellent for the beginning endurance athlete, or perhaps for someone returning to working out. If you've been at it a few years, you've probably heard it in other words before.
Book Description
Human Resource Champions issues a challenge to HR professionals: define the value you create and institute measures for your performance, or face the inevitable outsourcing of your function. Ulrich identifies four distinct roles that human resources staff must assume-strategic player, administrative expert, employee champion, and change agent. He provides hands-on tools that show HR professionals how they can operate in all four areas simultaneously and offers specific recommendations for partnering with line managers to deliver value and make their organizations more competitive.
Customer Reviews:
Outlining a future for HR.......2006-04-13
Author Dave Ulrich reflects an awareness that many professionals keenly feel: in these highly competitive times, they must either evolve or stagnate. His book tells human resource (HR) leaders how to assume more vital, strategic roles within their organizations. He makes a convincing argument that successful companies must elevate HR to the role of a strategic partner, to enable it to implement programs that support an organization's goals. Whether reading any book can put you in the forefront of hands-on transformation remains to be seen, but this volume certainly offers plenty of real-world case studies to back up its premise that HR professionals must step into a new, vital strategic role. Each company and each HR department is so different, however, that it may be challenging to apply some of these broad themes to specific situations. That said, the themes themselves ring true, although the book is now more of a classic than the innovative think piece it was when new. We recommend it especially to HR professionals as a comprehensive look at why you must conquer so much territory to keep your organization competitive.
Building a competitive organization with Ulrich.......2005-10-06
Ulrich has marked a new theory on human resources management system. According to him, company's HR manager has strategic position and more than just "a head of employee division". HR manager, said Ulrich, at least has four key positions in building a competitive organization: as (1) strategic partner, (2) administrative expert, (3) change agent, and (4) human resource champion. Ket's learn more strategic steps with this Number One Management Guru!
Read if you are a businessman - shape up your HR department.......2005-08-07
HR Champions was the first mainstream book that looked at HR as more than just an administrative department. Regrettably, in the eight years since it's publication, few companies have truly taken heed. Many HR "professionals" (sic) quote Ulrich's work but few practice it.
This is a well written book crisp, devoid of too many clichés, practical, comprehensive. Forget those useless university HR text books, this one should form the base of your knowledge of the function. But make sure you keep up with the latest trends.
It's a classic.......2004-10-07
When Fortune Magazine published "Taking on the Last Bureaucracy" in 1996, a gauntlet was thrown down for the HR community. Thomas Stewart, Fortune columnist, indicted the professional Human Resources community on many fronts. The most damning was, though, that HR added nothing to the achievement of strategic organizational purpose.
This book was the best response to that challenge, and it was a great start. I've assigned this book to my HR management graduate students since 1998, and have not regretted it.
Yes, it is somewhat outdated now, but should be read for its role in reshaping the very definition of HR work. Sorry to say that its companion volume, "Delivering Results," is now out of print, but it can still be obtained.
A recommendation: read this book along with "The HR Scorecard." They work together almost seamlessly.
basically good, but no longer cutting edge.......2004-02-21
I read this book back in grad school (degree in HR). While it was current then, the concepts are no longer cutting edge/benchmark HR. This is a well-written book and is helpful for the HR novice to gain an understanding of the evolution of HR as a profession. However, for those who already work in an organization where HR is not only at the table, but setting the strategic direction hand in hand with the CEO as a valued member of the leadership team, this book could use a few more chapters. In the last 5 years many companies have moved past the "recognizing HR as a player" stage and are firmly in a space where there is a set expectation of HR - to help set the stategic direction for obtaining their revenue and market growth targets. It is in these areas that I would like to see the next ground breaking insights from Ulrich.

Delicious and easy to make recipes.......2007-08-27
This is an excellent cook book on American barbequeing and the recipes I have made have been easy to make and delicious.I have been a bit dubious about some of the recipes after I have read the ingredients list but every time the recipes have turned out better than expected but exactly how the author Ray Lampe described. For instance I made the creamy coleslaw and it didn't sound like it would be that good but it was easy to make and the best coleslaw I have tasted.By contrast I have made a coleslaw from 'The Best Recipe cook book American Classics'and this has had a long description and went into great detail about every stage of making the coleslaw but the end result has been very disappointing. The book also contains little anecdotes about each recipe and the world of competition barbequeing and this all adds to the book.Overall this is an excellent book and I will be buying the rest of Ray Lampe's cook books.
The Dr. is in.......2007-06-27
I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. BBQ at the Arkansas Literary Festival a couple of years ago. I bought his book then, and recently purchased another for my son.
Unlike most cookbooks, this one isn't just recipes and clinical information about the ingredients and preparation methods. Dr. BBQ includes stories about the people behind the recipes, as well as his own philosophy about weighty questions such as: Gas, charcoal, wood or pellets? Charcoal? Well then, chunk or briquette?
And to the people who insist that using gas isn't the way to prepare REAL bbq or charcoal isn't and so on, the Dr. suggests that unless they are going out naked and killing an animal with a stick before cooking it then THEY aren't really preparing bbq the traditional way either.
Good fun, good food, good guy. The recipes are easy to follow and produce great Q, but I must admit, I use this book for inspiration much more than for the recipes.
Good cooking.......2007-04-10
Ray knows his stuff and can clearly express it. This ought to be your first reference when you're setting the menu.
A titan of pork.......2007-02-10
I've cooked with and written about the man, and I love this book. Count me as a fan. An excellent source of BBQ tips and a great read.
Big Time Barbecue Cookbook Review.......2007-01-21
Recommend this to anyone wanting to improve the quality of their barbeque. Outstanding compliment to any cookbook collection.

Born without arms or legs below his elbows and knees, Kyle Maynard excels as a champion athlete, inspirational speaker, college student and male model. No Excuses is his inspirational autobiography that shows how a positive can-do attitude gives someone we might see as disadvantaged the advantage over life.
Customer Reviews:
Kyle Maynard.......2007-07-10
Kyle Maynard is such an inspiration. I have recommended this book to several people: a wrestling coach, a parent scared of giving birth to a congenital amputee, a girl with poor self-esteem. Kyle is an amazing young man and a blessing to humanity.
Inspiration.......2007-05-16
When i read the book "No Excusses" i really felt like he was an inspiration to every one who has a disabiliy. He shows real courage and how you can do anything if you set your mind to it.And its really showed me how many people out their complain that their life is not good well thats sucks dosen't it and i think kyle has shown a real insperation to all of us how he shows he got through the rough spots in life and that shows how anybody can do it if they set there minds to it.thanks to Kyle Maynard he has shown inspiration to all of us!!
A true champion in life.......2007-03-09
I just finished this book, and I'm planning on recommending it to everyone! I've never met Kyle personally, but after reading this inspirational biography, he's at the top of my list of people I admire and aspire to be more like. He shows that no matter what limitations you may face in life, you can accomplish anything with faith (in God AND in yourself) and determination. What a class act!
Incrediable.......2007-01-15
I liked this book but had expected a little different. I rate it 4-5 stars just based on this amazing man. It is a excellent gift for someone that is a wrestler. Or maybe a struggling youth that wants to become one. For myself the emphasis was on the struggle to become the best wrestler. I would have like to read that but more emphasis on his personal struggles. His thoughts and ways he inspires himself and others. I have seen this young man on tv and was more inspired by those few moments more so than the book.
Fantastic Rise.......2006-10-30
Kyle Maynard is a boy born without arms and legs. His parents don't allow him the luxury of self-pity, and he learns first to survive, and then to thrive. He learns to be an effective football player, and then a state contending wrestler and champion weight lifter.
The story is less about being a champion in wrestling, than life. It is also about parents supporting a child to face life as it is, to not expect handouts or sympathy. Any non-wrestler can learn from Kyle's no-excuses attitude towards facing adversity.

Customer Reviews:
Banal.......2007-10-09
You can always learn something. You may learn much from this book, but in my case, not much. I should have noticed the hyperbole on the dust jacket. "What do you want your business to look like in twenty years?" This is plainly absurd. In a fast-changing environment with so many contingencies one can't predict five years out, maybe not even five months. One needs the ability to be adaptable and agile. Just think back twenty years ago, before Google, before cell phones, before we were in so many wars around the world, before the real-estate boom, before the dot-com boom and bust.
This book is based on Christian religious precepts that I find unhelpful. The world is not a static place; and if you just follow the steps, the assumption is, the desired results will miraculously appear.
I found no mention of intuition, the ability to be present, and the value of un-structured time. Purpose is assumed to be good, but often the opposite is true in exploration. Not having a goal is where creativity and change can be allowed to flourish. The Koto School of Philosophy's action-intuition makes more sense in a dynamic world. In a static world, one can get by with imitating so-called successful people.
Sadly, the book reads more like just one more recipe. Externally imposed strictures are resisted by creative and imaginative minds, but this book doesn't seem to be aimed at the thoughtful. Even the title is clichéd sports analogy.
Becoming a Coaching Leader.......2007-08-23
Started out really good but I seemed to get bogged down two-thirds of the way through it (It may be just me). I plan to finish reading it and review previous chapters.
Great book!.......2007-06-21
The methodology in this book will change how you see your work and give you the tools to be a better and more purposeful leader. I'm coached by the author's firm, Building Champions, and their process allows you to take a step back and view your work (and life) in 4 step approach that is really wonderful. Check it out!
SPECIFIC STEPS.......2007-05-13
Daniel Harkavy is a staple for the mortgage industry....caoching many of the industries top preformers.
Love the book. i was able take away ver specific steps i can impliment today with both my team and my personal life.
Book Description
No one can deny that our culture is opposed to Christian values, and the influences bombarding our children's moral development can be deadly. But few parents and church leaders realize how critical it is to start developing a child's biblical worldview from the very earliest years of life. The problem is complex: parents who themselves did not receive early spiritual training leave their children's training to the church. Yet the church often focuses on older children-not realizing that a child's moral development is set by the age of nine. The answer is for churches to recognize the need to come alongside parents to provide them biblical worldview training, parenting information, counseling, etc., that will equip them to help their children become the spiritually matuare Church of tomorrow. Profiles presented of churches who are effectively ministering to children and winning the war our enemy is waging against them\. Research orientated books on childhood spiritual development. Nicely done.......2007-10-06
The book was packaged very nicely and it came in mint condition. I was very pleased with the service I received.
You've GOT to be kidding.......2007-10-01
It's a joke to say "No one can deny that our culture is opposed to Christian values, and the influences bombarding our children's moral development can be deadly"---Our culture in inundated with "Christian" values judging us and our children, teaching intolerance, and bigotry. Teach your children that they are part of a bigger picture that includes EVERYONE, not that they are superior, or that they will be punished by GOD. I became a much more responsible (i.e., moral) citizen of the world when I stopped trying to do right because I'd be punished, but rather did right because it was right!
Great for Parents and Teachers.......2007-02-24
George Barna is a Christian revolutionary in the best sense of the word. His insightful commentary, statistical analysis, and vision for success are inspiring and He provides great direction for any children's ministry in this quick reading book.
One of THE BEST..........2006-11-15
I've worked with children for years, understanding that, as someone? has said (can't remember the exact quote), "It's easier to raise healthy children than it is to fix broken adults." Mr. Barna excellently explains and promotes this truth: pouring into them while their young so the foundation in Christ is firm and immovable. If you're planning to nit-pick the details and statistics as several readers that reviewed the book did, then I guess this book isn't for you. If you're looking for specific how-to's, it isn't the book, either. But, if you're looking for a book that grabs your heart and stirs you in ministry to children (or your own), and you're willing to ask the Holy Spirit, "How, specifically, do we do minister to children in OUR church (or family)?" then this is THE ONE! This book has stirred me to have faith for greater results, give more, reach higher, pray more earnestly, love more unconditionally, lay down my life more sacrificially than any other book I've read on the subject. I'm in the middle of reading it a second time and have it now as a must-read for all new teachers!
LETS NOT LOSE ANOTHER GENERATION.......2006-03-06
If you are like most passionate followers of Yehshua we do not want to lose another generation from the church. This book is a must read for pastors, youth pastors, lay ministry workers and the body of Christ at large. In practical everyday language George Barna hits home the message that if we do not reach this up and coming generation for Jesus it will be to our peril. It begins at the home level so parents get this book, read it, pass it on, tell everyone you know to read it. Life impacting, life changing!
Book Description
Complete Champion focuses on the divine champion and provides new rules options for characters who enjoy battling for a cause, defeating foes with divine magic, and going on quests that mean more than simply defeating the bad guy and grabbing the treasure. Complete Champion also helps Dungeon Masters run quest-themed campaigns and adventures.
In addition to providing various archetypes for characters, Complete Champion includes new feats and prestige classes. This book features dozens of deity- and belief-themed organizations, turning religion and holy (or unholy) power into something characters of all classes can use.
Customer Reviews:
Good for "core pantheon" campaigns.......2007-09-16
All in all this isn't a bad book, it just lacks a certain level of applicability to any campaign not using the "core" deities as detailed in the PHB. More or less all of the fluff and a good deal of the crunch in this book seems to take that as a given. All in all I have been impressed with the Completes series - I was dubious of the "second round" but after Mage and Scoundrel I was generally impressed. This one seemed a far cry in utility compared to the others in the series. It has a handful of useful rules items, but all in all this isn't a great book.
Quite Useful For 3.0/3.5e Greyhawk Campaigns..........2007-09-13
Complete Champion works best if you're campaign is set in Greyhawk and/or prominently features the core 3.0/3.5e D&D gods. It's also the most DM-centered of the "Complete" books, which are generally thought of as extensions of the Player's Handbook (PHB). While there are new feats, prestige classes (11 of them, actually) and spells, the rules for creating church affiliations and holy sites take up quite a bit of the book. While players might join one of these organizations, it's the DM who'll get the most out of this information.
Affiliations were introduced in the Player's Handbook II (PHBII) as a way of providing rules and benefits for characters belonging to various organizations. You don't need the PHBII, however, as rules for building your own church affiliations are provided in the Complete Champion. Affiliations are useful because they provide criterion for characters to rise up in the ranks of a given organization (in this case, a church) and provide increasingly valuable benefits for doing so. While all the churches presented in the book are of non-evil Core/Greyhawk deities, there are brief descriptions for the evil Core/Greyhawk deities, as well. Furthermore, rules are given to allow you to create a church affiliation for nearly any deity you choose based on their prominent domains.
Among the usual selection of feats are a new type called Domain Feats. These feats, which can be taken by any character, are each based on one of the core domains from the PHB such as Air, Destruction and Travel. These Domain Feats provides an ability, often only usable once per day, based on the powers associated with the specific domain. This provides a fun, if not always balanced, way to provide non-divine classes with the blessing of a deity, which I like, but there's certainly nothing to keep a divine class from taking these feats as well.
Many of the prestige classes are based on the Core/Greyhawk deities, as well. Pelor has the Shadowstriker and the Shadowspy which are both tied to a Pelorian church affiliation called Pelor's Shadow Guard. While this might sound counterintuitive for a sun god, the description of the affiliation does a great job at explaining how these prestige classes came to be. There's also a prestige class for Hextor (Ordained Champion) and another (The Sancctified One) which can be taken by Ehlonna, Kord, Olidammara or Wee Jas, providing differing abilities for each.
The new spells favor the cleric, but there's quite a few new things for paladins, druids and blackguards as well. There's even a few new spells for Adepts (the NPC class), which is something I haven't seen in a while. On average, the spells are 2nd-4th level spells, but clerics receive a few 5th-7th level spells, too.
Of the new items presented I particularly enjoyed the special holy symbols. These are masterwork holy symbols that each have special powers relating to the Core/Greyhawk deity they represent. There's quite a bit of variety here and these items are relatively inexpensive having more value in terms of status than monetary worth.
The final chapter covers divine quests and holy sites. Again, this is probably more befitting a DM than a player. While players who worship a certain deity will certainly want to visit the holy site and gain the favor of their gods, this material is better served in the DMs hands. Still, these can add a fun touch to any Greyhawk campaign.
Overall, I think this is a great book and I intend on using the church affiliation rules to build my own churches and expand those of the other deities in my Greyhawk campaign. If you're running a 3.0/3.5e Greyhawk campaign or favor the Core deities, this book can definitely help mesh the rules and rewards of belonging to a church to the concepts and flavor of serving a deity. If you don't have any use for the Core/Greyhawk gods, then this book will be of significantly less value to you and I suspect that may be why it's received such low ratings overall. I'm sure I'd like it a lot less if it featured Forgotten Realms or Eberron deities, for example.
So, if you like the Core/Greyhawk deities and want to find ways to make them more interesting to their followers, pick up Complete Champion right away. Otherwise, you'll probably be disappointed. But me? I think it's quite good.
It's not too bad, but not as good as most........2007-08-23
I was a little disappointed that this book wasn't more like the Complete Scoundrel. I thought it would be the Scoundrel's complete opposite, much like the Book of Vile Darkness and the Book of Exalted Deeds.
It is ok.......2007-07-19
While I really enjoy the concept of the domain devotion feats, there just did not seem to be very much to this book. They have interesting variants, but I wish they had more prestige classes in it.
Shadowstrikers!.......2007-06-30
I quite like Complete Champion, which offers more depth on the major D&D religions, some cool feats and alternative class features, spells, and magic items. I didn't think too much of the prestige classes, but I rarely find prestige classes very compelling. Then again, I thought the "Shadowstrikers" have a very cool flavor: sort of a military alliance between the churches of Pelor and Heironious out to save the world. The Summon Holy Symbol and Metal Fang were a couple of handy spells that, upon reflection, should've come out years ago. The new feats include Domain Feats, each one associated with a particular domain that the cleric has to have to take it. The new reserve feat associated with healing (Touch of Healing) could revolutionize how some parties approach healing between battles: so long as you keep a 2nd level or higher cure spell in reserve, you can slowly heal your buddies up to half their total hp without casting a spell or expending a charge off a wand. (The feat is particularly useful for druids and bards.) The Holy Warrior feat is a personal favorite (constant boost to damage, but you need access to the War domain). An earlier review suggested that the book is only helpful for paladins: I couldn't disagree more. There is a divine-style alternative class feature for every class: the ones for ranger I thought were cool, and there are options for fighter and monk that enable them to align their weapons/unarmed attacks without needing a cleric to cast Align Weapon. Most of the magic items work for anybody, although some are only for druids, clerics, or paladins. The rules for joining church organizations, whether or not you're a cleric or paladin, have some neat little benefits: I thought the 1st rank benefits for followers of Moradin (+5 movement for only 500 gp and some easy criteria) is a good example of something any dwarf would appreciate. All in all, I really liked it.

OUTSTANDING.......2007-10-03
WOW DICK COOK... do you even know what you are talking about? I thought this book was insighful and well thought out. It covered several different angles for beginers. This is who the book is aimed for. This book is not directed toward the more experienced players. Well done Mr. Fischman, well done.
Worthless.......2007-08-21
Not one worthwhile idea in this book. For beginners try Lee Jones..Intermediate..Mat Hilger and advanced Harrington. They are worthwhile books. Tis one is not!
Not bad, not great.......2007-07-09
Not a bad book, it does have a lot of useful tid bits inside the pages, but the book will not really challenge your thinking and insight to the game. If you're a beginner this book may be a useful read, but if you've been playing for a while and past the beginner stage, you might want to look at some other more in depth material.
Improved my INSIGHT and MIND!.......2007-06-15
****1/2
This was my second poker book and first online book. I have been playing off and on for about 7 years now and this book has helped my game tremendously, specifically online, but not exclusively either. Scott gives you a lot to think about during the game and also helps you to think on different levels and how your emotions and mind come into play whether playing online or live games. There were many excellent tips and anecdotes from well know pros as well, both online and brick and mortar. There is a great pace to the book - it is a very quick and easy read. Lastly, another nice feature is the multitude of pointers for sit-n-go's, tournaments, and cash/ring games!
The only drawback might be the lack of mention of odds in general, which do play a large part in poker, but that should be a given anyway. This can be learned from many other books anyway. I highly recommend this book to just about anyone, beginners and advanced players alike. You will certainly become a better player with all of the great strategies and insights provided. And, in turn, hopefully you can make much more money! Best of luck always!
Good book for both experienced and inexperienced players.......2007-03-16
Scott Fischman is a guy who was once a dealer who went on to win a couple of World Series of Poker bracelets including one for the HORSE event. This interested me. (Yes, I used to play basketball and remember Bob McAdoo of the Lakers who was a deadly shot at HORSE, about whom it was said--by Michael Cooper--"You do, McAdoo.") But I digress.
HORSE in poker stands for Hold'em, Omaha hilo, Razz, Stud, and stud Eight or better. It's spread in some clubs, but you can almost always find some limit games at PokerStars and other places on the Internet. A round is played of hold'em and then a round of Omaha eight or better, then a round of razz, which is stud lowball, and then a round of regular stud and then stud hilo, and the cycle is repeated. You have to be a pretty good all-around player to be successful at HORSE, and anybody who can beat that game regularly earns my respect.
This book, like many others published in the wake of the TV- and Internet-turboed rise of poker, is directed at beginners or near beginners. The "Mastering Internet Poker" in the subtitle is justified however because Fischman reveals a lot about his overall approach to the game of poker, especially his psychological approach. For Fischman the most important psychology in the game is self-psychology.
There is plenty of strategy presented throughout the book and some explanations given on how to play various hands in various situations; but mainly Fischman concentrates on his overall approach to the games. In a sense this is a hybrid book: part "how-to" and part "how-I-did-it."
Fischman is not a deep strategic master of the game or a mathematical whiz. He is a "by the seat of your pants" player with a wealth of experience both online and in the brick and mortar clubs. His advice on tournament strategy, especially online Sit-N-Go's is excellent. He divides the tournament, one-table or otherwise, into three "seasons," the beginning when blinds are small relative to stacks; the middle, when the size of your stack begins to dictate decisions; and the endgame, when many or most decisions will involve all your chips and your tournament life.
In the "beginning" he likes to "look for spots where I can safely--or as close to safely as poker allows--double my stack. Otherwise, I've got no business being in the hand." (p. 71) In the middle he likes to start making small raises often with the idea of picking up the blinds from his now very careful opponents. In the endgame, Fischman becomes super-aggressive. One excellent idea of his is that near the bubble when many players start to play very carefully you can steal a lot of pots. He believes that in Sit-N-Gos you should aim to finish first, not just in the money because of the big difference between first place money (usually 50% of the prize fund) and third place (usually 20%). So he advises, don't be afraid of finishing fourth and out of the money. A first and a fourth are better than two third-place finishes.
Also interesting is Fischman's take on "multi-tabling" online. He believes that playing several tables at once not only allows the expert to win more money, it allows the expert to get into the zone and become "the Robot," as he calls himself when he is just one with the decisions, one after another in front of him on his computer screen. His idea is that because multi-tabling is so demanding on your attention it forces you to focus. You don't have time to worry about bad beats or time to over-analyze. You are a Robot, focused, decisive and unemotional. Yes, you miss subtleties and some opportunities, but you don't try to do too much and you go with your first instinct which is often right.
Fischman tends to the superstitious, which of course is NOT recommended. However he justifies it from a psychological point of view by noting that if something makes you feel confident that will help you win. So it's okay to depend a little on that lucky shirt, and yes it may very well be the case as you drive into the club and see all those license plates with the poker hands on them, "KAA 555," etc., that yes you ARE going to be lucky today!
Some of Fischman's recommendations on how to play specific hands in specific situations go against the grain of the conventional wisdom. But here again I found his ideas interesting. Sometimes he seems clearly "wrong" or maybe just doesn't make himself clear. For example on page 125 he writes about tables being broken down later in a tournament as players are eliminated. He notes that he doesn't like being moved to a new table after having made some rebuys because "I want to have the chance to win back the chips I have lost. I can't do that if the players I've been kind enough to 'loan' my chips to are suddenly scattered throughout the tournament. There's nothing worse that rebuying 10 times, having your table broken down, then finding yourself at a new table where no one has purchased a rebuy."
Unless I'm missing something, this seems plainly illogical because it doesn't matter from whom he wins chips. He still has the same number of chips and the same relative chance of winning the tournament. I think what he must mean is that while losing those chips he picked up some valuable information about those players and now can't use that information.
What is obvious from reading this very readable book is that Scott Fischman is one heck of a good poker player and that his strength is in his overall approach to the game, some of which comes shining forth from these pages. I think both experienced players and beginners will find something of value here.

Comprehensive Textbook at Black Belt Level.......2007-03-28
I was surprised by the well balanced and complete coverage of the Six Sigma methodology from DMAIC, including managerial steps, all the way to statistics up through Design of Experiments. The all inclusive topics seem to parallel full Black Belt training. I would expect green belts to be offered selections from the book in a standard course. I would say no other book has this "textbooky" look and feel (that is not meant as a criticism). At the end of chapters find Minitab instructions including screen shots. The material is well written, hence understandable, hence I think this is one of the best overall introductions to the subject without slamming the reader with high levels of mathematical theory.
Six Sigma GB .......2007-03-13
I think this book is an excellent resource for experienced Six Sima managers. However, if you want to buy this book as a study guide for the SSGB certification test, or as an introduction to Six Sigma, it isn't going to help you out much. I guess my lowered rating is due to the fact that the book didn't meet my expectations as it was described on the Amazon site.
An Excellent Introduction to Six Sigma.......2006-07-20
This book was well worth my time and money! Being a Six Sigma beginer, I found this book to be easy to follow and comprehend.
Explained is the DMAIC process model, Voice of Customer (VOC), Voice of Process (VOP)and Design of Experements (DOE) in clarifying detail. Best of all, it includes step-by-step explanations of project experiments and the statistical analyses from the expereiments using Minitab 14!
Whether you want to learn the basics of the Six Sigma process (Chapters 1-8) and / or basic Six Sigma statistical tools and methods (Chapters 9-15), I highly recommend this book!
Note: Minitab 14 (Statistical software)is free for 30 days and the associated minitab-formatted excercise worksheets are down-loadable from the publisher's website.
Practical Six Sigma Guide.......2006-05-22
Six Sigma for Green Belts and Champions is a completely accessible guide for actually doing Six Sigma. It is a must read for anyone interested in Six Sigma management.
Accomplished promised ETA.......2005-09-29
The book arrived exactly on the day they told me it was going to arrive. It was worthwhile to save money buying through here rather than paying more through a bookstore.
Book Description
Welcome to the world of Martin "Buzzy" Schwartz, Champion Trader--the man whose nerves of steel and killer instinct in the canyons of Wall Street earned him the well-deserved name "Pit Bull." This is the true story of how Schwartz became the best of the best, of the people and places he discovered along the way and of the trader's tricks and techniques he used to make his millions.
Customer Reviews:
An Entertaining WallStreet Novel !.......2007-07-13
I think some previous reviewer mentioned this way back. On the back of the book it says "Buzzy Schwartz is a winner, we know because we clear for him. All else is nonsense."
I totally agree, its what it says. It's just entertainment for a reader of a winning trader and a lot of nonsense. On average 70% of the trader's do loose money, 18% breakeven and 11% are winners.
You can read more about Buzzy Schwartz in this book entitled "Market Wizards: Interviews with Top Traders" by Jack D. Schwager
Tony Soprano meets the S&P 500 pit!.......2007-04-09
I happened upon this book in a used bookstore, and bought it on a whim. All the way thru the book (read practically in one sitting), I kept thinking of how I was reading the story of Tony Soprano in his life as a day trader! Humerous, silly, engaging, challenging, stressful, vain, self-aggrandizing, amd more. I couldn't put it down, and I doubt you will want to either!
A Good Read - Enjoyable, entertaining, and encouraging.......2007-02-28
As other reviewers have noted, this is not a technical "how-to" type of book. However, it gives unique insight into the psychology of someone who has succeeded in a game where in the end, psychology more than anything else divides the winners from the losers, and the losers from their money.
The most entertaining book I've read since Liar's Poker.......2006-07-25
I had to give this book 5 stars. It is so entertaining at times I was laughing and other times introspective...just like the author.
Buzzy Schwartz must be considered one of the greatest traders of our time and this book is more of an autobiography than a trading manual. He never divulges his trading methodology nor how he turned from being a mediocre break even trader to the star he became.
He references various indicators he uses but with no explanations and curiously credits Terry Laundry's T theory for his turnaround because " it went back to who I was as a person ". The T Theory is then left to you to figure out (Which I can't).
The best thing I can say about his methodology is that it is uniquely his. All of us need to find what best fits our trading style and apply it...there is no one size fits all in trading.
Towards the end of the book it becomes very clear that Buzzy has become weary of the toll that trading has taken on his life ( he wound up in the hospital and almost died) yet still can't seem to get the trading bug out of his system ( he places a trade while in the doctors office).
All in all one of my favorite books, not for its trading methods but for its entertainment value.
Beware of superbookdeals seller.......2006-06-19
If you want to buy the book, go ahead, just be careful of superbookdeals, they take your money but don't deliver and don't answer emails. Caveat Emptor.
