A little disappointing -- consider Jorge Posada's "Play Ball!" instead.......2007-06-08

After reading Jorge Posada's excellent children's book, "Play Ball!" at least a dozen times at my four-year-old son's request, I was excited to see "Out of the Ballpark" by Alex Rodriguez, one of the great players of our time.

Although other reviewers seem to love the book, my son can barely tolerate it and will pick any other baseball book before this one. He doesn't light up like he does with Posada's book, or any of his baseball books, for that matter.

His favorites are the amazing Casey At the Bat: A Ballad of the Republic Sung in the Year 1888 (Caldecott Honor Book), the entertaining Casey Back at Bat, the beautifully illustrated Home Run: The Story of Babe Ruth and a book that features his favorite player, Dear Ichiro.

The story felt like it was trying too hard to me and never really developed the great rhythm good children's book authors seem to find. Take note: this is a fictional story loosely based on events in A-Rod's life...a fact that isn't revealed until you've completed the story. I probably wouldn't have purchased the book had I known it was fiction.

When it comes to children's books, Posada hit a homerun. A-Rod, well, I'll give him a bloop single...and I'm giving him that for picking a decent illustrator!

I find this a great book with some wonderful surpises inside for young boys and girls who are just getting into baseball. They can learn what it means to be part of team and it shows respect to one another. My grandson had a great time with it.

Children need to know the importance of long term goals and "practice makes perfect"...This story presents those values.

My son, Kevin (going into 3rd grade) had to do a summer reading project and he chose his favorite person, Alex Rodriguez. The book was very well written and on the reading level he needed. There were plenty of great pictures and he learned a lot about his hero!

This book has excellent writing, almost as good as Harry Potter books. It used all the pages carefully - meaning it took the time to explain details. I liked the characters and it is a good fantasy book.

Some fun reading!.......2007-05-01

My 6 year old son enjoyed the story and characters after seeing the movie. I ordered him this book as a gift. He is a beginner reader, so, his dad and I read to him and he really loves the creative descriptions of the people and the places. This book is helping him see how fun reading can be. He can read some of it himself. We are anxiously waiting for book 3, "The Deep Sleep".

Just like the first, this book uses great detail to explain what is going on. It keeps you guessing about what is about to happen and if they can find you know who. I really want the third book to come out soon.

Something I finally liked to read!.......2005-06-08

It was really good. I liked how they made cool details about downtown and Imagineer. I liked some of the new characters Shark Boy and Lava Girl met. It was exciting to read with lots of action. I don't usually read unless a teacher says I have to but I read Vol 1 and 2 in just 2 days for each book. My Mom was amazed! I'm almost 10 years old. I really want to read Vol 3 but Mom can't find it anywhere yet.

Hit a Grand Slam is about Alex Rodriguez as a kid and growing up. It teaches you to be kind. I recommend it to people ages 7 and up, even if they don't like baseball. It's also a really good sports book for kids who like sports. It's one of the best sports books I ever read.

This book really affects kids in a positive way. It informs the reader "It's nice to be important, but it's important to be nice!" This having been said ever so elegantly by A-Rod himself.

Alex and his team did a great job of affluently connecting the pictures with his stories in such a way that it is one you won't want to put down until finished.

Alex is a great role model, and his book is an excellent reflection of him. His positive outlook shines throughout his book, which in turn inspires the reader, the kids.

Wow! I loved this book.......2006-04-13

I never do really read books, also ones that are long and have small print like this one. But I was really into it. It explained everything I needed to know about one of my favorite baseball players. Of course I bought this book at the Cooperstown hall of fame where the book should be rewarded a plaque and where A-Rod will go. I read it and understood as a reader that preffers non-fiction, in 5 days I finsished it on the way to Six flags great adventure.
