Book Description

In 1894, Laura Ingalls Wilder, her husband, Almanzo, and their daughter, Rose, packed their belongings into their covered wagon and set out on a journey from De Smet, South Dakota, to Mansfield, Missouri. They heard that the soil there was rich and the crops were bountiful -- it was even called "the Land of the Big Red Apple." With hopes of beginning a new life, the Wilders made their way to the Ozarks of Missouri.

During their journey, Laura kept a detailed diary of events: the cities they passed through, the travelers they encountered on the way, the changing countryside and the trials of an often difficult voyage. Laura's words, preserved in this book, reveal her inner thoughts as she traveled with her family in search of a new home in Mansfield, where Rose would spend her childhood, where Laura would write her Little House books, and where she and Almanzo would remain all the rest of their happy days together.

2 out of 5 stars On The Way Home by Ana Clare S........2006-12-13

The Book, On The Way Home, by Laura Ingalls Wilder, is basically what it says it is. It is a Diary of a Trip from South Dakota to Mansfield, Missouri, in 1894. This book was not that enjoyable just because it was just diary entries, like "today we ate meat." But other wise it was quite intriguing to discover the ways in which people traveled back in the day. In one part of the book it talks about how their covered wagon is not a covered wagon at all but that, "It had been a two-seated hack though now it only had the front seat." I also found it very enjoyable to read about the worth of money back then and compare it to now. It talks about how Laura had earned a whole one hundred dollars which today is like penny cash but back then was a fortune. In the beginning of the book there is a setting by Rose Wilder Lane, Laura's Daughter, which is a great piece of writing, it is like the rest of Laura's books in that it makes you want to read the rest of the book. I found this book interesting but a drag because of the slow pace in the book. If you would like to take a slow dip into history you should definitely read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Different to the LIttle house books, a diary of an adult.......2006-07-02

I can see why Laura Ingalls was able to write such good books about her early life on the Prairie. Her diaries were packed full of information and detail which she could later draw on. This is one of her diaries, with notes and a setting by her only child, daughter Rose Wilder Lane who was just a girl during this trip.

Laura Ingalls Wilder is, of course, famous for her little House books describing her childhood growing up at the edge of American settling in the mid Nineteenth century. Constantly pushing to new territories and places Ingalls father lead them west into Indian territory and later to Dakota where they settled. Laura met and Married Almanzo Wilder in de Smet, Dakota (Those happy Golden Years, and First Four Years) however those books left a me feeling a bit downhearted. Especially teh First Four Years, in which Almanzo 'Manly' and Laura seemed to be struck with tragedy (the house burning down) etc.

I found this diary to be hugely uplifting. It is not the detailed stories of her childhood, or living in a wagon as an adult settler, but it is a great tale detail of a family moving, of finding something which they could call their own, but far away in the Ozarks.

The most interesting thing to me about it, was that while they were on the road they were constantly being passed by other settlers, some going north and others going south, but the number of people on the move was amazing. At one point Rose adds a note that she looked back while they were about to cross the 'muddy' and there was a stream of covered wagons behind them.

Little details of what life was like really draw this out - tomatoes 10c a bushel and so they bought 2c worth. Huge watermelons for 5 c, Almanzo selling fire mats (ASBESTOS!) and all those little everyday details about life for Laura.

While she did not put her stories down until many decades later, clearly she was a writer in the making right from the beginning. Rose, her daughter has provided much of the detail necessary in here, but it would be really nice to see an illustrated edition of this showing the place as it was and as it is now. It was interesting to use Google Earth to view some of the trail which you can see right now. It gives it a sense of scale which I will not be able to do myself unless I acutally visit.

The only reason this has four stars is it is not as gripping as Ingalls novels - it is still a great read and highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars I like Historical Diaries But This One Is Especially Meaningful.......2005-09-29

It's often said in tones of this-is-true-but-it's-also-heresy that Rose Wilder Lane, daughter of Laura and Almanzo Wilder, is the real unsung heroine in the Little House books, because while she let her mother have credit for the famous series, it was Rose, via her careful, invisible editing and re-writes, that turned cheery memoirs into beloved classics. I suspect that's true, but in the case of this book, it is beyond all doubt what happened. Rose took her mother's raw diary and prepared it for publication, and the product is the book On The Way Home, which tells of the journey Rose and her parents made in 1894, from DeSmet, South Dakota, setting for the final half of the Little House books, to the Ozark country, where the family would spend the next sixty years. The description is unsentimental, not glamorized (as it tends to be--for the sake of betterment--in the other books) and it paints a portrait of the difficult traveler's life on the by-then crowded prairie overrun with east-central European immigrants, many of whom being exactly the type portrayed in novels such as My Antonia. The Wilder family completes its draining re-location by covered wagon and arrives in Missouri, a state so much a promised land to them that a reader cannot help but share their relief when they safely arrive.

4 out of 5 stars A Little Different.......2005-08-24

This book is written in a much different style than the other Little House books. Laura kept a journal of the trip and these are her day-to-day entries. It can sometimes be dry or confusing. I have been reading the series with my daughter and this one has been a little more difficult. We enjoyed it, but not as much as the others.

4 out of 5 stars Cool!.......2005-04-19

This Is Another Little House Book Based On The Adventures Of Rose,Laura, and Almanzo!I Only Gave This Book 4 Stars Instead Of 5 Because It Is A Good Bit Confusing To Me.I Wish It Wasn`t.But Anyway,This Is Definately A Book Worth Reading And Buying,Especcialy If You`re A Little House Or Laura Ingalls Wilder Fan!

5 out of 5 stars Writing for Quick Cash: Turn Your Way With Words into Real Money.......2007-07-18

What is the key to actually making money with your writing? According to Writing for Quick Cash, the answer is perseverance, planning, and putting pen to paper.

So many individuals want to become writers. They know that they have something to say but aren't really sure what to do next. They write an article, a short story, a poem, or a book and send it off to every magazine or publisher they can find. After months of no replies or worse yet a desk full of rejection letters, they get discouraged and give up on their dream. Others never even get a word written on paper before they get discouraged and give up.

Writing for Quick Cash states that there is another alternative. Want to be writers need to continually practice their skills so that their writing improves. They need to build up their clips so that they can move onto bigger projects. Most importantly though, they have to learn to match their writing to suit what a particular editor wants to read.

4 out of 5 stars Not disappointed.......2006-12-29

This book serves as an excellent guide if you are a freelancer looking for outlets for your work. Chapters cover everything from writing tips to query submissions to suggestions on areas to focus your writing for "quick" cash. By quick, I got the sense the author compares writing shorter pieces to perhaps writing a book. A book, she states, not only takes longer to produce, but requires significant publishing and marketing efforts to be financially successful. Writing short pieces and tarketing specific markets has the potential to bring in steady cash -- though the author points out that you will probably not get especially rich from this.

Each chapter ends with informative "Starting-out Steps." These tips should get your juices flowing with creative ideas about the topic covered in that chapter. The subtitle of the book, "Turn Your Way With Words Into Real Money," provides key insight into the premise of the book: 1. It assumes there is some writing skill (or way with words); and 2. It also assumes some degree of "newness" to the area of publishing your work for money.

Though I found the book informative, I would have liked a few of the sections expanded on, like the section on writing fillers. Overall, I would recommend the book if you have good writing skills and little experience writing for cash. It is definitely a good reference guide that offers innovative ideas for selling your work.

5 out of 5 stars Writing for Quick Cash: excellent overview of the freelance market.......2006-08-28

When I purchased Writing for Quick Cash, I was looking for ideas to expand my writing opportunities, for new markets for shorter work. I found Loriann Oberlin's book extremely helpful in that regard. She has a quick, bright writing style that is easy to read, and includes sidebars and examples to illustrate her text in a very concise way. Whether you are looking to enter the writing market for fillers, greeting cards or newspaper articles, or beginning to research the non-fiction book world, Writing for Quick Cash will be a great way to start your journey. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource Book For Writers.......2006-04-21

I bought this book to take with a corresponding course. I must say both were exceptional. As a writer for a local paper, I am constantly looking for other outlets for my writings. This book opened my eyes to a lot of opportunities. I would recommend this book for the beginer to the experience writer.

One review mentioned that it really isn't "quick". As someone who is semi familar with the writing business, you must understand that Quick is not the next day. The book gives clear steps on how to get your writing career off with a jump start.

5 out of 5 stars answering reading turtle.......2006-04-19

I can appreciate that 'reading turtle' isn't pleased but after teaching from this approach for roughly 20 years, most recently with online classes, I can tell you it's far from 'an outright lie.' In fact, it works. It's worked for me and for many, many others.

Former students went onto sell successful books to commercial publishers and many dozens more used the course and text (this book) to sell fillers, greeting cards, short and longer feature articles, newspaper pieces, you name it. Others have used it to launch successful freelance endeavors in the business writing realm such as public relations projects, web design businesses, etc.

No where did I imply that by reading only one chapter you can get published, nor that the knowledge in the journalism chapter equals what you get with a bachelor's. It's merely to let the reader know that to get started, this is sufficient. Having more education/experience, of course, always helps but lack of it shouldn't deter any aspiring writer. There's a niche out there for most everyone who wishes to get published.

Most of turtle's complaining has been taken out of context so it makes me really wonder what the motive for offering such a negative review might actually be. Hmmm.

Indeed you can propose a non-credit course fairly quickly. In addition, you can write captions, fillers, and short material, and begin the makings of longer projects quickly as well.

The essence of the "quick cash" approach -- turtle missed this completely -- is that you start small and build your skills from the quicker writing assignments. Therefore, you invest most energy with the greatest opportunity toward getting published fast -- to boost self-esteem as writer AND to boost your bank account.

Turtle is entitled to an opinion, but since my courses have been quite popular, the diatribe seems to reflect the minority opinion. Those who would like to know more about this book are welcome to contact me through my website [...] and I'll be happy to answer any questions. -- Loriann Hoff Oberlin

5 out of 5 stars A great place to begin.......2006-02-28

I spent a lot of my young life just bouncing around and living it up. So I ended up a 29 year old lay-about, with a degree in accounting, which I have no use for, and a degree in philosophy (which between you and me, no one has any use for). It was by accident that I came across this book and decided to put my talents in line with my personality and become a freelance writer. If you love to write, but aren't sure how to make a career of it, Robert Bly's book is a great place to start. From publishing books to writing for television, it's full of useful information and resources for starting your new career. And if you happen to be interested in freelance specifically, check out writersmarket.com. It's really all you need.

5 out of 5 stars Good overview of the possibilities for those who write..........2003-05-20

Bob Bly has created a useful book which delves into the variety of possibilities awaiting those who either like to write or want to make writing a career choice. Bly pulls no punches, however. He makes it clear where the pitfalls are and frankly discusses some of the hurdles that all aspiring authors need to be prepared to jump over.

Overall, the book is a realistic appraisal of the markets awaiting good writing and how best to get there.

Balanced and clear in its discussion, it should find a way onto every writers book shelf.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful, but general.......2002-07-07

This book is a great starting point for people who want to begin a career in the writing field.

Bly lists the various avenues that writers can pursue to earn a living, and gives tips on how to get started in each different category. The book is very general, but Bly also tells the reader how to obtain more information.

I would have to agree with the previous review that the book is outdated. I think that a revised edition (something written after the invention of the Internet) would be a very helpful read.

If anything, this book is great for generating ideas and heading you off in the right direction.

3 out of 5 stars Anyone with the desire to be a writer would benefit.......1999-02-26

Anyone afflicted with the desire to be a writer would benefit from a quick read of this comprehensive analysis of career realities for writers. Robert Bly's first chapter, "The Writing Business," provides a balanced analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of a writing career: You probably won`t get rich, but you probably will be fairly satisfied with your work and your working conditions.

Other chapters explore book publishing, magazine writing, newspapers, advertising, public relations, corporate writing, technical writing, television and film, and freelancing. The chapter on technical writing is thorough and accurate, particularly the quote from Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., that "Newspaper reporters and technical writers are trained to reveal almost nothing about themselves in their writing. This makes them freaks in the world of writers, since almost all of the other ink-stained wretches in that world reveal a lot about themselves to the reader."

Although I applaud Bly's broad treatment of career possibilities, I am bothered by a nagging suspicion that the entire book is dated. In spite of its publication date of 1996, it cites examples no later than 1984. The references to printed books in each chapter are also outdated, with no citations from the 90s. This makes Bly's lists, such as "Fifty Prominent Book Publishers," very suspect.

Therefore, I'd recommend this book for historical research, followed by checking out recent sources to see a realistic, current picture of your career possibilities.

      Book Description

Last spring Billy Bean, the only living openly gay former major leaguer, gained national attention with his breakthrough memoir, Going the Other Way—an unprecedented chronicle of America’s national pastime that went on to sell more than 25,000 copies. Bean brings us inside the clubhouse and onto the playing field, offering dead-on insight into the game and the physical and emotional demands it makes on players. Bean faced an agonizing choice, in secrecy and solitude, between continuing to play the game he loved and the honesty of a loving relationship. By turns heartbreaking and farcical, ruminative and uncensored, the book culminates in a respectful, deeply felt appeal to Major League Baseball and other professional team sports to live up to their promise of equality and opportunity. A testament to the power of the single voice, Going the Other Way is an exemplary American tale that points the way toward a more perfect game, one in which all men and women can pursue their athletic dreams free of prejudice and discrimination. An eight-page photo insert is featured in this New York Times bestseller.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks, Billy, For Speaking Out! Thanks For Your Courage and Honesty! You've Made More Friends Than You'll Ever Know!.......2007-01-11

Billy Bean hit indeed pitched a shut-out and hit a grand slammer with his autobiography.

Thanks Billy, for speaking out about a universal truth that society dare not speak out about. Traditionally men (all men) have paid a severe price for daring to reveal their affectional feelings for one another, which I believe to be an underlying cause of a great deal of violence and human misery.

I am sure you already had a lot of friends, prior to writing the book. By writing the book you proved to be a true friend of mine, as well as of ALL other men.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating glimpse into the closeted world of major league baseball.......2006-11-10

This is a heartfelt story that has not been told before -- a glimpse inside the world of major league baseball from the perspective of a perceptive and sensitive gay man. Billy writes with real passion about the sport he loves, the incredible pressure to excel, and the high personal price a gay man pays for remaining in the closet. He has a lot to say about the culture of professional sports, how players relate to each other both on and off the field, and what it takes to excel in a very demanding job. And for those who are not baseball fans, a useful glossary of baseball terms and slang is included at the back of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Show's yet another reason for needing gay marriage.......2006-08-21

GREAT story. I am not a sports fan, but couldn't put the book down once I started to read it.

I think Billy helps to prove that the stereotype that gay men are vain is wrong. Here is a man that could have any gay guy he wants and is more interested in love.

Having to miss his partner's funeral almost brought tears to my eyes. This story right there provides yet another reason as to why we need gya marriage in the US>

      4 out of 5 stars A solid base hit!.......2006-02-04

Billy Bean played for 3 major league baseball teams (the Dodgers, Tigers and Padres). He was never a star in the majors, but he had a decent career. Would Bean have a story to tell if he was not gay? Maybe, because it seems everyone writes an autobiography these days. This isn't just the story of a gay man. This is the story of a man struggling to discover who he really is.
Bean discusses his childhood, his high school playing days and his years in the minor leagues. While he progressed through life, he always seemed to feel as if something was missing or not quite right. Still he got married and thought he was living the 'right' life.
Eventually and painfully, Bean realized what he was and decided to act upon it, even though he was not ready to go public with everything. Tragically and much too quickly, his first meaningful gay relationship ended with his partner's death due to AIDS.
Bean's story of coping with this loss, while coming to terms with his sexuality is an engrossing story. You can feel Bean's pain. Gay or not, we all go through our own identity struggles. I guess that is one thing that makes Bean's book good. We can all relate to his struggles. Yet, on the other hand, I have no idea what he must have endured, but Bean paints a vivid and often painful picture of his journey. This makes the book a good read for all people.
I won't totally kill the ending, but I will say that it is uplifting and positive.

4 out of 5 stars Ever dreamed of chucking it all?.......2002-07-02

Who has never fleetingly dreamed of just "chucking it all" and taking off on a nomadic trip around the world?
Richard Meredith, finding himself at a mid-life crossroads, did just that, and shares insightful, often humorous, vignettes of his yearlong adventure in "One Way or Another".
His book is a witty, entertaining hodgepodge of observations, personal anecdotes, historial background and information.
It will surely leave some readers, with their own wanderlust aroused, wondering: Could I? Should I? And if not now, when?

5 out of 5 stars This is the most useful writing book I've ever bought.......2007-07-12

I've owned a lot of writing books and they've had varying levels of usefulness. "Writing while you Sleep" is the only one that I have kept and referred back to save for the basic reference works, such as "Elements of Style".

What's so great about this book is that the concept of writing while you sleep works both for nonfiction and fictional work. "Sleep on it," we've all heard that phrase relating to decisions. Fundamentally, people using that phrase are counting on your dreams processing the 'daywork' of your brain.

Along with the book, you need to buy a notebook and pen to keep somewhere close to your bed. You're going to wake up with ideas and the more you write them down, the more you're going to have. Don't think you're going to remember, because you won't.

Using the book to write didn't disturb my sleep. As a matter of fact, during a very stressful time while I was working on my Master's Report, I would read my research materials and tell myself as I was going to sleep that I would 'sleep on' what I'd read. I usually slept pretty soundly instead of tossing and turning worrying about whether I'd get the report done on time. When I woke, I'd make notes about what I'd processed during the night.

You can not only write scenes and reports, but re-write your dreams. Something else that might not have occurred to some is that you can use this concept to guide your dreams. If you start having a repetitive nightmare (in my case, the "I'm not going to finish this report" one) just program yourself before you go to sleep with the idea that you are going to finish the report and do well.
