4 out of 5 stars I'm rich beyond my wildest dreams, I am, I am, Iam.......2007-09-23

This book has given me an insight to how the universe works, it's easy to follow and understand and explains why and how to make it work!
Brilliant!!

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating!.......2007-09-12

Somehow I knew by my earliest childhood that the whole life works under the same princip. Simply, it had to be the truth, and finally now, at the age of fifty I'm exploring fascinating story from the opposite side of the world!
Like a ferry tale. So, I allready believe. Who knows where I will be guided to, after I apply these technics in my life?

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on how to attract Abundance into your life.......2007-08-01

I have read many long winded books on how to make your life rich and abundant. This is a short book and gets quickley to the point.
Simple to read and explains very clearly the steps you need to take. Tom Pauley's amusing little stories give his book, great credibility.

I would heartily recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but could have been better!.......2007-07-11

I liked this book a lot, and it was very interesting. I especially liked the "assignment" of buying a .79 cent spiral notebook, and creating the lists of what you want in life. I still use the notebook, and refer to it often keeping it updated. The book could have been MUCH better, but sadly, the authors use it to pitch their $2,500 Quantum Selling and Quantum Marketing seminars!

3 out of 5 stars Tithing--what it really means.......2007-06-12

Emmett Fox talks about tithing as giving a tenth of your joy, happiness, positive emotions, etc. to God. He suggests giving what you can, when you feel moved to do so. That sounds like a lot better way to view tithing, to me. God doesn't need your money--and this book even says not to ask the Universe for money.
I think some of this is a good exercise, but there are better sources for the same information, but everyone learns in different ways. I think Neville Goddard is better, in terms of explaining the deeper aspects of the Law of Attraction. Emmett Fox is more appealing to me. But, as a starter on this type of work, this book is OK.

Beautiful 17-year-old Celeste Milford is only the gardener's daughter, but she falls madly in love with the younger brother of the very rich and powerful Garrick Throckmorton the Third. Lady Bucknell, proprietress of the Distinguished Academy of Governesses and a family friend, assesses the hopeless situation and graciously offers to enroll and train Celeste as a governess at her academy. So Celeste leaves for London and Paris, protesting loudly.

Four years later, Celeste returns to Blythe Hall a poised, well-traveled, independent woman experienced with the intrigues of politics after a stint as governess to the children of the Russian ambassador. Hired by Garrick to be governess to his motherless daughter and niece, Celeste has a not-so-hidden agenda, for she plans to charm Ellery Throckmorton away from his fiancé. Garrick has no intention of letting Celeste's plans come to fruition and sets out to monopolize her time and seduce her away from thoughts of Ellery. Much to his surprise, Celeste enchants him, fills him with lust, and destroys his famous self-control. Celeste is equally stunned to find herself drawn to Garrick--and she begins to see Ellery in a less flattering light. But Garrick doesn't believe in love, and when Celeste's appeal threatens to overwhelm him, he's determined to send her back to Paris. Before he can do so, however, he'll have to resolve the question of who's leaking information about his spy activities. Could it be Celeste? And just how does she know so much about spying, anyway?

In My Wildest Dreams is author Christina Dodd's historical homage to the classic film Sabrina. Dodd gives the story a unique twist with a heroine more sophisticated and wise than Sabrina and a hero more forceful than scheming. Readers also get witty dialogue, a colorful English setting, and very sexy love scenes in this well-written and thoroughly delightful romance. --Lois Faye Dyer

Book Description

Since she was a little girl, Celeste has had one burning desire:to marry Ellery Throckmorton. But what chance does a gardener's daughter have of capturing the heart of one of England's wealthiest gentlemen? However, the education she receives at the Distinguished Academy of Governesses enables Celeste to return to Blythe Hall with a refinement that complements her ravishing beauty—and makes her bold romantic dream more attainable. But, alas, temptation gets in the way . . .

For wherever Celeste turns, it is not Ellery she encounters, but his serious, yet undeniably intriguing, older brother Garrick. The elder Throckmorton will have no one interfere with the younger's impending nuptials, and his meddling infuriates Celeste to no end. Still, she cannot disregard the fluttering of her heart whenever Garrick deigns to smile at her. And the passion she senses smoldering beneath his formidable control is tempting her in a manner a lady must never allow . . .

1 out of 5 stars Is Rape Romantic??.......2007-09-17

I have never written a review before but absolutely had to for this book. I'd read all the "Sabrina" comments and didn't think that would bother me. It did! It was WAY to close to the movie in the beginning of the story. THAT I could get over - after she stopped following the movie scene for scene. What I couldn't get over was the SICK sex scene in the conservatory. It read like a sexual assault to me, and clearly out of character for Garrick and the storyline. What got him so enraged he would attack her sexually and continue to do so even after her repeated "NO's"?!! That her "body betrayed her" was supposed to excuse all that and make this scene romantic???
I'd hoped this would be an enjoyable read but instead had me lose much respect for this author and taint the regency genre.

1 out of 5 stars In My Wildest Dreams.......2007-02-03

Very very disappointed in Christina for plagiarizing the movie Sabrina. I liked the movie (both of them). When I read a book I want to vision my own characters or from the cover, I don't want to vision the characters in a movie. If I could give her negative stars I would have given her a negative-[...] It must have taken her an hour to compose this book - search and replace names and a few minor edits from the movie script. DONOT BUY THIS BOOK!

2 out of 5 stars Tsk, Tsk, Ms. Dodd.......2006-03-03

While her writing is superb, as usual, thus making her one of the best of the Romance writers,it is a no-no to so obviously recycle plots. This plot is a direct steal from "Sabrina" a wonderful movie (1954)starring Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart and William Holden. Unfortunately, this version does not compare favorably.

4 out of 5 stars Sweetly Sensational.......2005-12-17

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I read it in two days! I haven't been into the Governess series since the Rules of Surrender (which is Dodd's best by far) and picked this book up cos it was on sale. I'm so glad I did! The story is a bit droll at first, but still filled with humour and semi-realistic plot development. Garrick is a strong character and not at all romantic in the conventional way, but still desirable.

And the love scene(s), steamy! The best I've read by Dodd, delicious and had me fanning my face!! I rather like a brooding, responsible, muscular male, more so then the dandies. Garrick is just the perfect mate for Celeste, who honestly ticked me off in her obsession of Ellery. Speaking of Ellery, I wanted to slap him whenever I read about Kiki, but as the story progressed I sort of imagines he feels something like most young fathers feel these days, at a lost.

I'll stop here, since this is pretty long. The only reason I held back on the fifth star is because I could have done without the whole espionage bit.

1 out of 5 stars Wish I had read the reviews first!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-11-29

Red ALert!!! Sabrina re-write ahead. If you want to read "Sabrina" after seeing the movie go ahead. I was so disappointed. Did the author get sued for plagarism??? I usually love Ms Dodd's work - so I just bought the book. I couldn't even finish it. I have been wary about the Governess Brides series. Now I don't think I will read any.

2 out of 5 stars Wanted more of a love story than a saga.......2006-04-13

From the back cover:

Against the glorious panorama of Big Sky country, award-winning author Rosanne Bittner creats a sweeping saga of passion, excitement, and danger...as a beautiful young woman and a rugged ex-soldier struggle against all odds to carve out an empire--and to forge a magnificent love.

Lettie MacBride knew that joining a wagon train heading west was her only chance to begin anew, far from the devastating memories of the night that had changed her forever. But though she might leave the past behind, she never believe she would escape the pain of innocence lost, nor feel stirrings of desire for any man...until she met Luke Fontaine.

Haunted by his own secrets, Luke could never blame Lettie for what had happened in the past. One glance at the pretty red-haired lass was enough to fill the handsome, hard-driving pioneer with a savage hunger. This was the woman he wanted by his side as he fought to build an empire--to tame a land that only the strong could take and only the courageous could keep.

Against relentless snows, murderous desperadoes, and raiding Sioux, Luke and Lettie would stand together, bound by a passion that ran deep. But violence and tragedy would stalk them, and in this time of endless tears and brutal challenges, they would face a heartrending choice--to abandon a lawless land before it destroyed them, or to fight for their Wildest Dreams.

And my review:

When I pick up a 600 page book marked as a historical romance, I expect it to have lots of romance in it. I don't expect the falling-in-love part of the book to be over in less than 25 pages. But that's what happened here.

Romance readers like me want to see the struggle of falling-in-love, from initial attraction to "I'll love you forever". 25 pages just isn't going to do it. Love at first sight stories have absolutely no appeal to me. If you don't mind (or even like) love at first sight stories, then this book will appeal to you. I felt cheated, as if the author wanted to get the romance out of the way as quickly as possible so that she could get back to her historical fiction. Seriously, the hero and heroine exchange maybe ten words with each other, and suddenly *wham!*, it's true love. Considering that the heroine had been brutally raped at 15 (and bore a child from the attack), I find it hard to believe that she'd fall in love so easily.

If you're a reader who enjoys sagas, then I recommend this one, as Rosanne Bittner is a very talented historical writer. Her stories are extensively researched. She always provides a lush picture of the time period she's portraying. However, if you want really moving romance that takes longer than a few minutes to develop, then you won't want to bother.

5 out of 5 stars Easily a 10!.......2003-11-12

If I were stranded on an island and could only take 5 bks with me, this would be one. This is an incredibly real saga of a troubled young man, injured in the civl war and dis-owned by his "father" who heads west to prove himself. He meets an unwed mother traumatized by a rape that resulted in her beautiful son. On this short wagon train ride they fall in love. The book continues from then until years later when they are grandparents. It includes all the trials and tribulations of their relationship, their hardships, the children and the pioneering people in the west. This would be a better movie than "giant" (the liz taylor/james dean/rock hudson movie of this ilk). You have to fall in love with the whole family....and
while there is sadness and angst there is also enormous joy, humor, love and delightfulness. If u read one book this month, make it this one........Lettie's love of her family and faith will stay in your heart for a long time.

4 out of 5 stars Nice History Lesson.......2003-10-11

I am used to typical romance novels, so this one was a little hard for me to read. Usually the plot is the same in every novel, but this one was a bit longer (almost 600 pages!), and went through the history of Montana and the whole Fontaine family. There was a lot of good action, but the story was a little too sad for me. Happy ending, like usual!

5 out of 5 stars Wildest dreams.......2002-12-07

This was one of the best romance novels that I have ever read.
Alot of action and heartbreak. I totally recommend this book to anyone who loves romance novels.

5 out of 5 stars BITTNER IS THE BEST !.......2000-06-29

I just finished Wildest Dreams. This book kept me thinking long after I had read the last page.Like the reader above, I laughed and I cried. Roseanne Bittner has such a special way of bringing you along with her and making you feel the depth of the characters. Every character in this book is interesting.I can't wait to read the the Mystic Warriors series.I wish they would make this book into a movie.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A terrific read - one for the keeper shelf .......2007-05-28

Stephanie Grant has gone to New Orleans to find her missing sister Tina. The last time she heard from Tina, she had been dumped by her boyfriend and had decided to become a high-priced escort. Worried that she hasn't heard from Tina, Stephanie decides to pretend to be a high-priced escort to find Tina. She goes to Chez Sophia's and asks around to see if anyone has seen Tina.

Jake is a bartender at Chez Sophia's. Once a cop, he's turned his back on his previous life following a tragedy. He recognizes that Stephanie isn't a high-priced escort. He doesn't want to get involved - with her or with anyone - but he's drawn to her and finds himself helping her.

In Your Wildest Dreams is a wonderful read. A terrific romance with a dash of mystery. Yes, it sizzles with hot love scenes, but it's more than just that. You actually care about the characters. Stephanie is strong yet vulnerable. And Jake. Sigh. I just loved reading about him, yet ached for his heartbreak. Together they're one couple you can see being together.

This was my first book by Toni Blake but definitely not my last. Though I borrowed this book from the library, I'm off to buy it so that I can read it again and again.

Just one side note, for those reading this book today, note that it was published just before Hurricane Katrina, so there are many mentions of areas in New Orleans that were sadly ruined.

5 out of 5 stars One hot read!!!.......2005-12-20

Stephanie Grant is on the hunt. The hunt for her missing little sister, Tina. Her journey takes her into the heart of New Orleans and the seedy side of prostitutes and high priced call girls. On her first venture into Chez Sophia, one of New Orleans prominent clubs where rich, powerful men go for beautiful, pricey women, Stephanie realizes that she is way out of her element. Despite feeling like a fish out of water, Stephanie will do what she must to find her sister. When she meets Jake Broussard, the cop turned bartender offers to help her find Tina. Now they are on more than a journey for a missing person. Jake also helps Stephanie let go of her inhibitions and repressed desires to feel passion once again. Stephanie soon finds that she is developing strong feelings for Jake. Will he return those feelings? Can he love her back? Now she has to find her sister and keep the man she loves.

Jake Broussard is a man haunted by sinfully erotic dreams. He needs a woman, and the new call girl Stephanie Grant looks like a good choice. Stephanie is not a call girl at all, so for her own protection Jake takes her under his wing. Jake is haunted by ghosts from his past and would like nothing more than to battle them in peace, while at the same time find his wife's killer. The Good Samaritan in him doesn't agree and he continues to offer his help, finding himself emotionally drawn in. No one draws him in as much as Stephanie does. She deserves so much more than what he can give her. But, before Jake can love again, he must first solve his wife's murder.

I love Stephanie's strong willed character. I also admire Stephanie's loyalty to her sister and her willingness to go anywhere and do anything to find Tina. Stephanie is strong, capable and competent, but when she gets around Jake, her vulnerability starts to show itself. Jake is protective, caring and handsome. His need to care for those around him make him a very attractive hero.

In Your Wildest Dreams is a hot read. The sexual tension between Stephanie and Jake is as sultry as the New Orleans night air. I love the way this couple fight how they feel for each other when together, but when they are apart, they yearn the other. Together they are a very explosive couple.

Jake's helping Stephanie overcome her sexual hurdles left me breathless and panting for more. Jake's intensely erotic dreams had nothing to do with his skill in helping Stephanie, but they sure were hot to read!! They gave me a few hot dreams of my own! Jake and Stephanie make the pages sizzle and my blood boil. Get a copy of In Your Wildest Dreams today because it's wilder than you can imagine!

This is hot romance at its finest! A definite keeper. Jake Broussard is the kind of heart melting hero everyone adores.

5 out of 5 stars Sexy and classy..........2005-09-28

A terrific read! Stephanie and Jake light up the New Orleans night (and days too!) with the kind of sizzling love scenes you can always count on in a novel from Ms. Blake. Best of all, she manages to deliver yet another book that's more than just a super-sexy romance... it's a story with real heart. You'll be cheering for Stephanie and Jake - and the supporting cast too - every step of the way.

3 out of 5 stars Predictable and steamy romance.......2005-09-26

Stephanie's sister has disappeared in the brothels of New Orleans. When she reports this to the police, she is met with indifference, so she goes about investigating the crime on her own. At a high class club for working girls she meets a bartender - Jake, who is also a former cop. He pegs her as a novice and decides to try to help her.

Along the way, they embark on a passionate affair. Jake tries to resist anything more than a sexual relationship as he is fighting the demons that led to the loss of his wife, while Stephanie is finding herself falling deeper in love with a man who cannot commit. Their search for sister Tina results in the seamier side of New Orleans, and may have ties to other cases in Jake's past.

Meanwhile, Jake has taken pit on a street kid, Shondra. He allows her to bunk on his couch and generally looks out for her, while trying to encourage her to return to her family.

It is a very interesting storyline, and the lead characters have so much chemistry dripping off the page. But the plot surrounding Shondra is kinda clunky and does not really add much to the storyline (other than to make Jake even more of a hero). Overall, the story was a bit predictable, but still enjoyable.

    5 out of 5 stars Steamy Dreams.......2005-12-05

Wildest Dreams is an anthology by Janice Maynard, Morgan Leigh, LuAnn McLane three authors that until this book were new to me. All three stories are steamy, enjoyable reads that have their light hearted times as well.

Suite Secrets by Janice Maynard brings Rebecca Fraser, a magazine reporter and Sebastian Tennant, the owner of the speciality hotel together. Rebecca is out for an exclusive story, while Sebastian knows he cannot let such a story to take place. What does transpire between the two is more than they bargain for with the sexual chemistry and enough sparks to ignite a forest fire. But in the end they realize that what they have is special.

The Second Story Voices Carry by Morgan Leigh finds Camelot Reeves fantasizing over her boss Jonah McCauley. Because of Company Policy she knows that she can never have him, But they meet in the Company elevator by chance, one thing leads to another and they find they cannot fight their mutual attraction to one another any longer. What happens next makes for a delightful steamy read by a talented author.

Cabin Fever is the last story in this Anthology and is by LuAnn McLane. Rachel Manning is an author of sweet romances, but has a secret alias as author Jade Johnson who writes steamy hot romances. Jake Nichols, her agent, knows about the two sides of Rachel. Jake shows up at her wilderness cabin to inform her of the great news on her latest contract and gets stranded by a storm. But the storm outside is mild compared to the sexual, steamy storm that is sparked by Rachel and Jake inside the cabin. LuAnn has written a spicy read which rounds out this anthology nicely, and I will be looking for more books written by these authors.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Anthology By Brava!!.......2004-07-27

This is another great Brava anthology that you won't want to miss. These are stories from some great up and coming authors that will have you laughing out loud at times and fanning your face all at the same time.

Janice Maynard's Suite Secrets is about Rebecca Fraser a reporter for a travel magazine and she needs to interview Sebastian Tennent the owner of these secret hotels in order to talk him into allowing her to do a story on the luxurious hotels. Problem is that these are private hotels with secrecy being the main priority. Sebestian knows he can't allow sexy Rebecca her story exclusive but makes a deal with her. She comes with him to his newest hotel and poses as his wife and he might just let her have her story. What happens is both of these different people find out that they have more in common then they thought and the steam the generate is...well you get the point. Will either Rebecca or Sebastian get what they want or do they get something else all together?

Morgan Leigh's Voices Carry is my favorite of the three stories. Camelot Reeve has a problem. He bosses voice turns her into a melted puddle of lust. Before she knows it she is finding herself involved with the one man she knows she can't have but can't stay away from. Will Jonah be able to keep his lady?

LuAnn McLane's Cabin Fever is great. Rachel Manning is a successful author of inspirational novels. Her big secret is she's also the author of some very sexy and erotic novels under a different name. No one knows her secret until her sexy agent Jake Nichols finds her hidden away in the mountains penning just such a novel. Before they know it these two different people manage to set a spake that could burn down a forest!

This was a fun and rather fast-paced read. I highly recommend any book published under the Brava imprint. You are garaunteed a spicey read with great characters. This book is no exception.

    5 out of 5 stars Buy it--it's a keeper.......2004-06-08

Whoa boy! All I can say is, you'll read these stories over and over again. DEFINITELY worth the coin!

5 out of 5 stars Uncover Wildest Dreams.......2003-12-30

I highly recommend WILDEST DREAMS, an anthology from the BRAVA line, known for its BAD BOYS series. Each story in this anthology packs the heat and features a couple we want to see get together, as the couples mesh well.

SUITE SECRETS by Janice Maynard features a heroine, Rebecca, who wants to save her career, so she agrees to the outlandish proposal by the owner of a posh and exclusive resort. Once there, she gets lost in fantasy, and loses her heart to him.

VOICES CARRY by Morgan Leigh. Ever think a voice is so sexy you just melt? That is how Camelot feels about her boss. He captures her acting out her fantasies, decides to act on it and proceeds to reel her, and her heart, in.

CABIN FEVER by LuAnn McLane. Rachel is an author and has a secret that few people know. It doesnýt take long for the hero to figure out who she is. What he sees intrigues him, and since they are stranded, what better way to pass the time than have a little fun acting out the scenes in one of her books...

Why should you purchase this book? If you like your stories packed with heat and lots of romance, you should buy this. If you like to find new and upcoming authors that promise to have a future in the romance publishing industry, get this. All three stories were awesome. If you loved the BAD BOYS series from Brava, then you will also enjoy WILDEST DREAMS.

Overall, this book is too good to pass up just because you have not heard of these authorsýbecause you will hear from them again. All three authors proved to be stellar in this anthology and I look forward to more from all three authors.
WILDEST DREAMS is a gem not to be missed

5 out of 5 stars Wildest Dreams Scores.......2003-12-01

Wildest Dreams is a wonderful anthology by three fantastic authors. All three are now on my auto-buy list.

Suite Secrets by Janice Maynard has Rebecca Fraser trying to get the inside story on Sebastian Tennant specialty hotels. Sebastian agrees to show Rebecca his newest hotel as long as she agrees to spend it as his "wife". Sebastian and Rebecca have amazing chemistry and snappy wit. An amazing read that will make you sweat. Can't wait for her next book.

Morgan Leigh brings us Voices Carry. Camelot Reeve has it bad for her boss lawyer, Jonah McCauley. Just his voice alone can send her over the edge. A chance meeting in the company elevator leads to a dinner at Camelot's place and so much more. Their attraction is tantalizing, you can just feel the sexual tension build. Jonah and Camelot have a connection that exists in and out of the bedroom. Morgan Leigh has a brought a bright new voice to romance.

Cabin Fever by LuAnn McLane has author Rachel Manning who normally writes sweet romances working on sensual romances as "Jade Johnson". Alone in her cabin Rachel lets Jade out to play. During a storm, there is a pounding at her cabin door, it's her agent Jake Nichols. Jake is coming to tell her the great news about her latest contract. Jake is not prepared for the woman he meets. Their attraction is instantaneous and they are steamy. LuAnn McLane adds another exciting story to this anthology.

This book is a must read.

3 out of 5 stars Some useful info, but not enough.......2002-10-14

Gail Blanke's "In My Wildest Dreams" offers some good advice for brainstorming and planning a career that suits your passions, but not enough to earn it a place among classic career counseling books like "What Color is My Parachute" and "Do What You Are." I felt galvanized after I read it, but was struck that much of the ideas and advice had a familiar ring to them, and several I had tried before.

The book is designed like a seminar, with fictionalized participants taking the steps and responding as they would. I found this style choice effective but a little labored. The advice will be familiar to many: pinpoint your passion, brainstorm ideas of how to transfer your ruling passion into a career of your own design, and build a network to launch from. There is a chapter on specific goal setting, where Blanke likens goals to a mountaintop, with specific actions leading up the pinnacle. Her ball-of-fire personality comes through in her writing -- I'm sure her seminars are great.

A decent career building tool -- effective without being groundbreaking.

5 out of 5 stars Go for your dreams.......2000-06-23

Awesome book. I have read it twice to make sure I didn't miss anything. I was so impressed by this book based on the workshops Gail Blanke's Lifedesigns company does. After reading the book I wanted to go to one of these workshops. There weren't any scheduled in my area, so I called Lifedesigns. They have now scheduled one in NC and I can't wait to experience this book in real life. If you have dreams-read this book and do the exercises.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for moving forward in your life's journey.......1999-10-23

I have read a number of "self help" books and this one was incredibly solid and practical while making me understand that my wildest dreams are possible. Incredible!!

    5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY Fantastic!!!!.......1999-06-25

This book, and the conference I attended after reading the book, CHANGED MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!! I've literally purchased at least a dozen copies and given them away to women... I want everyone to know this kind of freedom.

My husband and children respect me so much MORE because now I'm being true to myself and everyone else.... it's incredible.

3 out of 5 stars Helpful, but hardly unique.......1998-12-17

To me, the best part of this book was Blanke's discussion of how the language we use often limits us, and how reframing the way we state something can open up new possibilities we hadn't thought of before. (I realized that, uncongenial as my mother's "change is bad" perspective always was to me, I still picked up her tendency to shoot down a new idea without taking seriously -- which has caused me to be seen as a nay-sayer and a pessimist at work.) She's also good on the subject of "unfinished business" -- her recommendation to throw out 50 things was a real eye-opener for me. And I felt that her remarks on how to convert disbelievers into allies were pertinent and useful. Her use of material from actual "Lifedesigns" groups gave her examples a convincing grounding in reality. But I didn't find much in the exercises or their interpretation that I hadn't seen somewhere else already. The book is still worth reading for the reasons I've mentioned, but if you're REALLY interested in rethinking your life I recommend Barbara Sher's books instead.

Brave as a lion, strong as an elephant, Ben is a fearless young boy. When it comes to protecting his big sister, Anna, nothing can stand in his way! Gallantly he spends his day battling moldy green ghosts, slime-belching monsters, and all sorts of ferocious beasts. Featuring Meyer's witty, whimsical artwork and Funke's deft balance of humor, emotion, and truth, this is the perfect bedtime read for rambunctious brothers and sisters.

4 out of 5 stars Wildest Brother is Good for Little Brothers.......2007-02-26

I'm always on the look out for books my kids and this is one I picked up as soon as I saw it. This is a good book for boys and it is recommended for preschoo, kindergarten, and grades 1-2. Wildest Brother is a book about Anna's little brother Ben whose always getting into something. And usually that something is something of Anna's, like her makeup. This is a fun read aloud.

4 out of 5 stars The Wildest Brother.......2006-07-17

Cornelia Funke's story is energetic and fast-paced and is perfectly complemented by Kerstin Meyer's illustrations, which bring Ben's imagination to life (there aren't really any bears or wolves or man-eating monsters, you see). Ben may be mischievous (he paints `blood drops' on Anna's desk using her make-up), but he's a loveable character, and it is his sister's indulgence that really makes the book spark.

“Peter Abrahams is my favorite American suspense novelist.”
    —STEPHEN KING

“Mackie dreaded the mail.” From this simple beginning, Peter Abrahams opens the curtains on a mesmerizing world down on the Mexican border, a world of complex and passionate people whose ambitions will lead them on a relentless collision course, a desert world that rises to the mythic in Their Wildest Dreams. The suspense will grab you and not let go, the surprises will shock you, but in the end it will be the wonderful characters who linger in your mind.

Characters like Mackie Larkin, a suburban mother desperate for money, who finds she can earn it as a stripper; Kevin Larkin, her ex-husband whose get-rich-quick schemes left her with a mountain of debt, and who now dreams up an even better one; Lianne, their beautiful, impulsive teenage daughter, for whom almost anything, even bank robbery, is possible; Jimmy Marz, the wrangler she loves, who gets a dangerous onetime offer that could take him to the life he’s always wanted; Buck Samsonov, the charismatic strip-club owner building a southwestern empire in the lawless style of a 19th-century robber baron; Clay Krupsha, a twenty-first-century captain of detectives in a border town where no crime is what it seems; and Nicholas Loeb, a struggling mystery writer whose encounter with an unstable muse entangles him in a web of true crime more mysterious than anything he imagined.

Utterly original, multilayered, and marked by the gripping suspense, sharp wit, and fascinating psychological insights for which Peter Abrahams has been acclaimed, here is a major work—a riveting story of modern-day desperadoes living their wildest dreams.

1 out of 5 stars Hated this book.......2006-08-31

I hate to disagree with other readers here, but I just have to say I hated this book. It was completely implausible and unbelievable from beginning to end. I was sorry I wasted my time reading this. I read Abrahams new book, End of Story, and really loved it, so went to the library to get something else he wrote, but was more than disappointed with this book. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

    4 out of 5 stars Fast, furious, funny - a good read........2004-09-26

Abrahams has got something - talent for invention and plotting!

This was a really enjoyable one day read. A novel with some of the twists of an Alistair MacLean and then some. This is a saga of larceny, marital chaos, adolescent lust and misguided passion, helplessly lost characters in the morass of the USA - Mexican border culture, black humor, the 'Old West' and of course good old sex and money.

It is a tale of 6 characters whose lives come together in a disjointed blend of violence and intrigue around the traditional 'easy' bank caper. Oh yes, and just as traditionally things do not quite go as planned - but just how is where the enjoyment lies. That said though, this is not a predictable book and the author deserves praise and recognition for that. Just as you think you know exactly what will happen it doesn't. There are lots of twists and turns that sting just when you relax.

This is not great prose though I did love the characterizations and yes it is the worst of American culture on display but it demonstrates a thoughtful author working to entertain his readers. It is entertainment - pure and unadulterated. My mind pictured another big bloody Technicolor Tarantino movie as 'Kill Bill' flashed past my eyes.

I laughed at what I thought were colorful, enjoyable images:
"He took the bottles, opened them with his teeth, both at once, handed one to Loeb. Loeb suspected they'd reached the high-water mark of their friendship, might never again be this close." (p206, ISBN 0141011300)

Abrahams runs an interesting subplot (or maybe it is the real plot) of an author struggling to get back into his creative realm and real enjoyment comes along as this budding sleuth accompanies the reader bumping his way through the plot. Along the way some well placed reflections of the state of publishers and literature find voice. Initially, I found this additional character annoying; but everything comes together and harmony ensues.

A tale that satisfies and will lead you to read more. A good airport and wet day yarn.

    2 out of 5 stars Mildly amusing.......2004-06-24

Well, this is not Dostoevsky, no need to use your brains when you read this piece of work. Mildly amusing. Poorly developed charachters. The portrayal of Mr. Samsonov is way over the top,
where did he dig up such a character? All in all, readable but mind numbing.

5 out of 5 stars Fast, Fun and Clever!.......2004-05-18

The pace of this book is much quicker than Mr. Abrahams' previous efforts. Additionally, he does a masterful job of injecting subtle, self-deprecating humor into the main character, Nick Loeb.

I thought the author's utilization of Amazon.com's book review feature was particularly clever.

The dialog is sharp and realistic, with many surprises along the steadily developing plot.

I have read several of this author's previous books, enjoying The Fan and The Tutor. I found Revolution #9, The Perfect Crime and Lights Out to be a bit slow and tedious.

This novel is definitely Mr. Abrahams' most entertaining effort to date.

4 out of 5 stars Character rich increasingly fast paced novel.......2004-02-27

Several stories of varied characters converge in a literally explosive climax in this extraordinarily well written novel. On the Mexican US border outside of Tucson, lives Mackie Larkin, a divorced housewife who dreams of owning a dance studio but after a failed real estate deal, desperately needs money just to make ends meet. Her daughter, Lianne falls for an older man who works at the same ranch her father does. Nicholas Loeb is a mystery writer who travels to rural Arizona to get hands on experience in law enforcement. Buck Samsonov is a crime lord who runs a couple of strip joints in the region. All their paths converge in this very clever crime novel. The question is who will be on top in the end.
After a slow start the plot becomes increasingly fast paced once we get to know each of the characters and their separate problems. Alternate chapters are used initially to reveal the individual characters. Part of the change in momentum occurs when the characters' lives converge making the separation by chapter no longer necessary. The characters, a major strength of the work, are all original creations. The conclusion is a bit problematic and unrealistic. However, this one is well written and very much worthy of a reader's time.
