What a great read!.......2007-07-25
I took it on vacation with me and I couldn't put it down. A great book for aspiring athletes and coaches as well as your average Joe who works 9-5. The coaches discuss a variety of topics from their childhood to how they motivate their players. Any easy read for all ages.
Game of life.......2007-07-24
I've read through Game of Life and I enjoyed it very much. There are so many things to take from this book, not just into sports, but also some reflections on life. I would recommend this book to everybody.
Coaching advise from athletic coaches.......2007-06-27
A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.
Overcome Adversity.......2007-04-12
Anyone looking for inspiration, either for their own life or to share with others, will find a gold mine of quotes here. This book isn't just for sports fans.

A Poor Addition to a Great Series.......2007-09-21
While the books are very good, these activity books are written/developed for a much younger crowd. Fine if you are using them for elementary students in a home school environment. Not very challenging or invigorating for a child that can read the book by themselves.
Disappointed in lack of work for younger students...........2006-11-12
I have never written a review before, but felt compelled to for this book. We are in our 4th year of using Story of the World and have always loved it. The activity book to volume 4 is a huge disappointment to me because of the lack of reading list suggestions for the lower grades. My favorite thing about Story of the World is that I have been able to easily present it to a variety of grade levels (I currently teach 6th, 4th and 2nd and K). The past activity books have allowed me to get books at each child's level (without having to go search them out myself). They have also provided pictures and coloring activities for the younger students, all of which allowed me to easily tailor the chapter's work to each child. This activity book will be very nice for my older children, but will leave me doing extra work for my younger ones (a prospect I am not looking forward to). My expectations were that this activity book would provide the same type of materials and activities as the first three. This book falls far of meeting my expectations. I am dissappointed that the authors decided to make what I see as a fundamental change in this last book of the series.
dissapointed.......2006-02-26
The prior three activity books have been a great addition to our homeschooling, but this activity book vol 4 was a huge dissapointment. It contains mostly maps. We get plenty of maps in the reading book. This looks to be more appropriate for older grades. It is not as useful for the younger grades which was the benefit of her other books, they were great for all levels. Not this one.

Good Advice.......2005-09-27
Charles Shedd shares the wisdom he gained from a long successful marriage with his daughter, Karen, befpre her marriage. "Letters to Karen" gives advice on establishing and maintaining a healthy, Christian relationship with her future husband. This advice is not just about how to treat each other right. It deals with the doubts and fears a new wife has on the day she wakes up, realizing that she is married, and asks herself "What have I done?" There is advice for handling the trials and tribulations which every marriage goes through. I read this book before my marriage and felt that it contained the best pre-marital counselling I received. Twenty-nine years later, I purchased this book for my future daughter-in-law. I am hoping it will be as helpful to her as it was to me.
Lasting advice--and it worked for me.......2003-08-25
My grandmother gave me this book around 1966, soon after I married. It provided basic advice about marriage that I took to heart, and the advice and the marriage are still working after 37 years. I loaned my copy to someone years ago, and it never came back, but I just bought a replacement. There's another generation coming up that I need to loan this book to.
love letters.......2002-01-25
I enjoyed this book. It gives good peices of advice that just about any woman in todays society can use! I would love it if my dad were to write me letters like this. I think its a cute idea and i'm glad he turned it into a book. I really want to write letters about life to my children once i have them. I would recomend it to any young woman out there.
useful advice.......2002-01-24
this book gives great advice to those who are engaged or wish to get married. this book is about a loving father that gives useful advice to his daughter who is about to get married. this book taught me about different problems that come up when in a relationship and how to deal with them. i think that karen is very fortunate to have such a loving father that is willing to give advice along with personal situations that he found himself in. karens father has a great relationship with his daughter because he tells her whatever is on his mind. when i become a parent i will do my best to have a good relationship with my children just as karen's father was to her. i would recommend this book because people can learn alot about marraige though the letters of karen's father.

Recommended by the Authors of The Man of Her Dreams The Woman of His! and The Man of Her Dreams The Woman of His 2 - Livin' It and Lovin' It! This is a great book to read if you are getting married, just married, or have been married for years. The wisdom that Charlie Shedd imparts in this book is timeless and should be shared with anybody who has anything to do with the act of marriage.
Possibly the most important marriage manual..........2006-11-10
...since the Bible.
Charlie Shedd, in his plainspoken way, helps his son Philip lay down the foundations of a great and lasting marriage. With wit and gentleness, Charlie touches on all the elements of a wonderful union from the man's perspective.
Letters to Philip.......2006-07-08
This book has wonderful advice on how to be considerate of the differences husbands and wives bring to marriage. By reading and trying to care for the needs of your spouse, the marriage will be blessed even more.
So old fashioned.......2005-07-19
This little book has some good bits of wisdom in it, but it is also couched in 1950's family roles... expecting the woman to be the house maker and the man is the bread winner... it is a dated concept of personal roles.
Book Description
Are you living the life you’re meant to live?
Like Neo in The Matrix, many of us know that something is wrong. We’re haunted by the idea that there must be more to life than the status quo we see in us and around us. We wonder: Is this all there is–to work, education, marriage, sex, family, friendship, and church?
Artful and inspiring, New Way to Be Human is a book for people who know something is wrong, are tired of faking it or forgetting it, and are eager to stumble after Jesus with passion and authenticity. Charlie Peacock–one of the most innovative musical creators of our time–gives us a fresh invitation to the amazing privilege, rich relationship, and meaningful work that a life of following Jesus is meant to be.
Customer Reviews:
diamonds in the rough.......2006-08-06
I am deeply interested in what it means to follow Jesus so I was excited to find this offering by Charlie Peacock, a songwriter and artist for whom I have great respect.
I agree with so much of the content of this book, but was turned off by the rambling, dusty way he covered some of the material that's been covered to many, so many, many times before.
However, I found many of the insights and suggestions in the later chapters stunningly on-target. So, if I could recommend to you chapters 11-19 as incredibly good, and suggest you skim the first half of the book I would. This book would have benefited from some judicious editing. By only eliminating 40% of the content it would be a 5 out of 5.
Don't be fooled becuase he's a musician.......2005-12-23
Essentially Peacock takes core theology and presents it in a fresh, relevent way. This is a book that doesn't get caught up on all the hang ups, whether it by jargon or whatever. But that is not to say that the ideas expressed aren't thought provoking. But if you're looking for any new wisdom, you might be disappointed. I read this for an undergraduate course in Christian ministry, and basically only another guy and I thought it was great. The others were expecting some new ideas. Peacock isn't about peddling any fancy new ways of thinking. No, by "new" way to be human, it is more of the Godly sense: an old thing presented freshly, like seeing it for the first time. It ends up being both inspiring and challenging in ways that really count. We don't need new truths, we need to learn how to apply the ones we've already got.
I think this book will excite you and give you a desire to live life the way it should be. But decide for yourself.
Good Theology presented creatively.......2005-01-10
I really enjoyed this book, and apreciated his attempt to explain the Christian life in a creative way. Though not always successfull, the attempt is noble and there are many chapters that are thougroughly successful.
He spends the most time on marriage and I think does his best work with this topic. In a chapter titled Passionate Realism, he says that "Marriage is a covenant of two people agreeing to recover together, each in different ways at different paces, both under the tutelage of the Teacher Jesus." and "Marriages are little films showing the kingdom lifestyle of forgiveness". In another chapter he says that "A good marriage should be the Art of God in the world pointing to his existance, care and excellence." Inspiring words indeed.
Other good passages are found on the topics of work ("The goal of work is faithfulness to God, people and place") and creativity ("The Creator made us to be little creators with the responsibility of meaningful work and purpose in the world.")
All in all a very good read and an inspiration to follow Jesus with greater honesty and passion. Keep on writing Charlie!
a new way through the old way.......2004-06-11
My elder sister gave me this book recently, after having just seen Charlie Peacock give a reading from "New Way to be Human." Peacock sets out his beliefs for what it means to be a Christian, and truly follow Christ, in today's world. For so long, many people have argued that art can have no role in religion. Peacock argues otherwise, saying that our words and our works are connected, and that art is essential to faith. As a long-time singer/song-writer, Peacock ought to know.
The introductory chapters to the book are slightly weighed down as Peacock seems to struggle for where to begin. "New Way to be Human" really doesn't hit its stride until Peacock takes his theories and applies them to our everyday lives, showing how our faith affects every area of our lives. He shows just how interconnected we remain to what Christ did for us. What he is saying isn't necessarily revolutionary; many within various Christian circles and communities have believed this for a long time. (One example: "Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith and Art by Madeleine L'Engle, first published in 1980) Yet it is a message that needs to be repeated, if not shouted, in order for it to resonante with the vast majority. Perhaps Peacock's book will do the trick.
Seamless Living.......2004-06-08
Charlie Peacock's book is a very fresh call for diciples of Jesus to live "seamless" lives, which means that everyday living beyond the places of worship is a matter of our words and work cannot be separated. Charlie writes primarily out of his own life as a musician, performer, song writer and producer. His grasp of this call is also bibilically and theologically sound. His understanding of our culture is also a major contributing factor in the credibility of NEW WAY TO BE HUMAN.

dern good.......2005-04-22
I aprove of this here paper binding cuz it's good for beatin the henderson boy who lives of the other side of our compound when he listen's to that thar hippity-hop music or whatever it is. Chuck Danieels is doing our land a service by standing up to liberals, commies, and the trilatteral commision. I hope is next book of learning squiggles confronts the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. THem shady folks have been reading my mind with them sattelites for tooo long.
How does he keep track of all the people he hates?.......2004-08-26
He seems to have more love for land than the people that live on it. And there doesn't appear to be any logic behind his hate. He just hates people because they are not exactly the same as he.
He likes NASCAR? What a shock!.......2004-04-30
If wrapping yourself in the flag was all it took to be a great patriot, Daniels would win the "Patriot Of The Year" award hands down. Its great we live in country where people can express their views (no matter how extreme) and not have to worry about reprisal. Yet, after reading through this book I get the feeling Charlie Daniels is more interested in making America conform to his arbitrary standards, rather than embracing the concept of a truly free society which our flag represents. I feel Mr. Daniels totally misses the point of the flag by going on a one-sided tirade, dismissing his political opponents as freedom-hating anti-American infidels.
Having said that, there is something for everyone in this book. Obviously conservatives will love it because it echoes everything Rush, Hannity, et al have been screaming about for years. Liberals with a sense of humor will get a big chuckle, while freethinking agnostic moderates such as myself regard this book as proof that neither the left or the right controls the printing press...yet!
Whether you agree with his politics or not, Charlie Daniels is an American, just like Sean Penn. The fact that neither one of them is in jail or dead for expressing their passionate political views is very comforting. Let's just hope neither guy ever becomes president.
If you're a close-minded conservative or an open-minded liberal, then give this book a try. However, if you're an Islamic lesbian Barbara Streisand fan of French heritage, you probably won't enjoy Mr. Daniel's take on "The Flag".
If he cracked open a history book instead of his mouth..........2004-04-17
One sentence from this book will suffice to show the author's grasp of history: "The French are afraid of their own shadow. The only war they ever won was the French Revolution, and that was only because they were fighting themselves."
What about the Hundred Years War, Mr. Daniels? What about the Thirty Years War? Not a resounding triumph, but settled on French terms. What about World War I? Yes, they took a lot of unnecessary casualties in that war. Dirty little secret, Mr. Daniels: so did we.
You wanna dwell on World War II? Sure, the French got their butts whipped. They still did much better than we would have done, had we had to fight Hitler on land in 1940.
It's deeply ironic that Daniels has morphed into the kind of back country ignoramus that he satirized in "The Ballad of the Uneasy Rider."
More than a singer a man of common sense.......2004-04-15
Patriotism is great love for your country and no one has exemplified this more than Charlie Daniels. With songs like "In America" and now with this book Charlie Daniels is a true American and his book is one of the best I have read in quite some time.
Ain't No Rag is more than a simple tale of how this great nation has become and what freedom means and what it costs. Ain't No Rag is the personification of what every American should strive for.
Daniels pulls no punches and stops the "political correctness" in every page of every chapter. Daniels takes on the "Elite Left" wing, Hollywood, and all those who bash the president. Daniels gives praise to those who deserve it and respect to those who serve this country.
If you want a good old fashion helping of common sense and sensibility than get a hold of this book quickly. Regardless if political persuasion, with an open mind everyone should find this interesting if not enlightening.

The gentle, thoughtful letters in Dear Charlie make perfect companions for those rare moments of peace in any parent's busy life. Christopher Kimball, known to cooking enthusiasts as the editor of Cook's Illustrated magazine, has collected a lovely series of letters he has written to his four children over the years, some for a specific child, and some as part of a general correspondence to them all. The letters are full of the wonders of children, and the delights and questions they bring to their parents daily. Divided into chapters, the letters fall into categories such as "Lessons Learned" and "Amazing Grace." If time doesn't allow for reading the chapter all at once, each letter stands well on its own. With tales of small New England towns, warm kitchens, walks by a river, and other simple joys, the mildly spiritual overtones in this book are a soothing reminder to slow down and enjoy each passing moment spent as a family. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
As parents, we know that adults and children inhabit different worlds. Sons spy bears in the woods; fathers see the hand of God in each gesture of the newborn. All mothers and fathers want to bring those two worlds together and open their hearts, minds, and wisdom to their children, but the words are hard to find. Dear Charlie, by author and father-of-four Christopher Kimball, is a tender and uplifting compilation of just such words. These are heartwarming letters we want to send to our children and unspoken words we wish our parents had left for us -- all filled with eternal truths that apply to any age.

Down to Earth and Soothing.......2000-02-26
I listened to this while driving and was instantly soothed by his detailed storytelling. He gives nice descriptions of events and enough detail to make you feel like you are there. He is reading letters that he has written to his children as they were growing up and capturing moments and slices of life. It made me want to start writing and capturing the moments in my children's lives before the memories that are so vivid now cloud over with time.

The foundation of Jazz Improvisation.......2007-08-31
This is a very nice book AS LONG AS just want the insight to his playing style. Remember, Charlie wasn't a technical player, like most jazz players of today, but was a expressional player. He just used several chord shapes to express horn-like ideas, melodies, and motivic licks. When you listen to Miles, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Herb Ellis, just to name a few, they all played in the same fashion except they have taken it to the next level, sort of, by incorporating modal ideas, chromatics, chordal substitutions shapes and others things. Thus, Charlie concepts, licks, is a fine place to start learning language of jazz. STOP PRACTACING scales and arpeggios and START playing music one chord shape at a time
It contains plenty of how to information so that you will not play the same ideas twice in the same fashion... The licks appear to have been typed into a music software and played back because the sound quality sounds much like a computer soundcard than the actual guitar. But the point is still clear. Once you play it on your guitar and then sit down to improvise with it you will soon realize why the MAN is influenced sooo many people. In addition, for those more experience players, you will gain some ideas that can be used as fill-ins for chord melody playing style, liken to Joe Pass or Herb Ellis...
All n all, it is a great book for learning how to improvise without warp speed picking...

Awesome .......2005-02-07
I purchased this set for my 5 year old for Christmas. He loves itand so does my 2 year old daughter. My son quotes entire scenes from it word for word. Great messages with humor that adults can enjoy. Highly recommend it. I have just ordered Vol. 1 and the 3rd release because even though my kids can listen to the same stories over and over, mom needs some new ones.
Book Description
Countless musicians have been inspired upon hearing Charlie Christian for the first time. In this exciting book, the author has compiled 39 precise solo transcriptions (in notation only), as well as a thorough analysis of each. There is also a complete "how to" section that is a book in itself. The author has recorded each transcription in slow and fast versions on two CDs. The book contains some of Charlie's best work including the Jam Sessions at Minton's, John Hammond's Spirituals to Swing concert and the Celestial Express Blue Note Recordings. Charlie Christian was the first to popularize the use of the electric guitar in jazz. He was the pioneer who led the way.
Customer Reviews:
Anatomy of a Genius.......2007-10-04
I have always admired Charlie Christian's accomplishments as a musician especially considering his death at a very early stage in his career. I marveled that someone so young could play at such a high level so soon in his career.... With this book I discovered that genius IS simplicity. Charlie Christian's playing was the perfect combination of economy and grace. I never 'got it' until this book deconstructed his style and laid it out for me in the most basic terms.... within days I was able to actually USE what I learned from this book and now I am rethinking my entire approach to the guitar! I highly recommend this book for the serious guitarist and the rabid Charlie Christian fan as well... In fact, I thought so much of it that this is the first and ONLY review I have ever written on Amazon... But I just had to tell somebody how valuable this book is... it's the kind that can change everything.
