Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Brielle, New Jersey, September 1991

Bill Nagle's life changed the day a fisherman sat beside him in a ramshackle bar and told him about a mystery he had found lying at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Against his better judgment, that fisherman promised to tell Nagle how to find it. The men agreed to meet the next day on the rickety wooden pier that led to Nagle's boat, the Seeker, a vessel Nagle had built to chase possibility. Others have gone into detail about this book, and it is true. This book combines a mystery worthy of a Sherlock Holmes novel with the details of technical diving and written in such a gripping manner that it could be a work of pop fiction (not in a negative way, just that it flows so well and put together so well that it could have been made up, if that makes sense.)

And the author does a great job of not leaving you "hanging" with an abrupt ending.

Highly recommended and has set the bar for other books in this genre.

An absorbing account of the discovery and identification by veteran divers John Chatterton and Richie Kohler of a sunken Nazi U-boat 100 miles off the coast of New Jersey. Kurson skillfully weaves together several threads into a very readable narrative, including the evolution of Chatterton and Kohler's rivalry-turned-friendship, the technical hazards of exploring a mangled wreck in 230 feet of water, and the duo's maddening, seven-year long ordeal to obtain positive evidence -- both on the wreck and in official but flawed US and German naval records -- of the boat's identity. As the tale draws to a close, Kurson also draws a moving portrait of the U-boat's crew, who went to sea in the final days of the war and knew that they likely would not return alive.

I started diving when the final pieces of this mystery were falling into place, and can remember following the story of New Jersey's mystery U-boat in the papers. However, none of those articles was anywhere as involving as Kurson's account, which I devoured in four days. Sure, there's some overheated prose here and there ("in a shipwreck, where every danger is first cousin to every other, a diver's desparation makes an open house of his bad situation."), but that's a minor strike against this otherwise excellent and comprehensive work.

Rare Intimate Journey To The Shadows.......2007-08-28

Sometimes the flaws make a thing so much more than perfection could ever achieve. The imperfections in this literary account of the exploration of a WWII submarine discovered in 1991 off the Coast of New Jersey are well documented. Those imperfections didn't bother me.

I was facinated by the detailed account of the personalities of the divers in "Shadow." Its easy to identify a future SCUBA diver - someone who is comfortable putting their face under water. Even better, because it will sometimes trump the 'face' test, is whether a person's curiosity is so intense that they are able to project their consciousness entirely onto something outside of themselves to the virtual exclusion of other thoughts. Divers want to investigate, explore, see something extraordinary, find out whats under that rock, go someplace very few people have been, find something unique, etc. The experience is so strong, you may forget to be worried about all the risks.

My enjoyment of "Shadow" was absolutely enhanced by my experience as a diver who is both Nitrox and advanced open water certified. I have never gone deeper than 110 ft - The U-boat 85, off of Nags Head, North Carolina, which is 20ft shallower than the recreational diving limit of 130 ft. So far, I've never wanted to see anything deeper, but I suspect I'll pass. Surface light begins to diminish rapidly. It usually gets alot colder.

At the depths routinely visitied by the divers in this book, 230 ft., nitrogen narcosis is an inevitability, and helium mixes carry their own risks. Water pressure increases to seven times what it is at the surface. Just when you need all your mental faculties and judgement, you can be assured they will be impared to an extent that cannot be anticipated from dive to dive. Even more frightening is that getting to the surface to resolve any problems that may arise (my mask came off once at 80 ft), must now include a life-saving decompression stop. When you head for the surface with less than 30 minutes of air for your stop, you're in trouble.

Diving can put you face to face with three realities that I don't sense as readily on land: 1.) the incredible spiritual beauty of the natural world, 2.) how alone we really are (I've never felt more alone than those very few times I've dived without a buddy), 3.) Death is always hiding within convenient reach.

The insatiable curiosity of the two lead characters, Chatterton and Kohler, also drives them above the water, as they travel to Europe to learn as much as they can about the submarine and its crew. There was no 'gold' involved, just an incredible mystery to solve.

"Shadow" was one of those books I read in one sitting (I missed dinner). I would compare it to Krakauer's works in power and drama, if not as well written. But again, in a way the rough nature of the text enhanced the story, as if I was sitting across the table from the author.

NOTE TO FELLOW DIVERS: After reading this book I have found my goal for my diving trips next summer - get my "Rescue Diver" certification.

NOTE TO THOSE PEOPLE trying to get young men (ages 9-15) into reading - I know of two young men who hated to read until they picked up this book. Not that they love reading now, but the 'no trespassing' sign is now down in front of the library.

Are there any good Germans left at the end of World War II? Put another way, who bears responsibility for the enslavement and slaughter of the Jews? Is it just those Nazis who actually participated in the final solution, or must we also include all those millions of Germans who looked the other way to protect themselves, their careers, property and family? And what can we possibly say about Jews who either failed in their duty to other Jews or even actively participated in the final solution themselves?

Although this perceptive novel is framed as a mystery when a young American soldier is killed at the start of the Allied Potsdam negotiations, it's also an exploration of morality. The many voices of the novel examine the problem of responsibility for genocide from various points of view. Jake Geismar, the American reporter who drives the story with his insistence on investigating the soldier's death, naively believes (at least at the start) that anyone he knew before the war when he lived in Berlin must be a victim, not a perpetrator. He is aided in this belief by the ruins of Berlin he sees all around him. Bernie Teitel, a Jew himself, is the Army's Nazi hunter, who studies the voluminous paper files kept by the Nazis looking for people to indict. Also on the American side are the scientist hunters, who want to bring the Nazi rocket scientists over to the US to exploit them for their knowledge, regardless of their complicity.

The German points of view are also well-represented: hausfraus who claim no knowledge of anything, scientists who claim their only interest is science, old men who maintained an anti-Nazi stance throughout the conflict and still managed to survive, Jews who hunted other Jews, gentiles who tried to protect Jews. Of actual German soldiers we hear little, probably because their case is so easy. And all of this is played out against the frightful ruins of Berlin, so appalling and ever-present they become a character in the story.

In the end the mystery is solved and in a sense the good guys win, but by the time you get there you are far less sure who the good guys actually are. And, if you're at all like me, you may find yourself wondering what you would do if you found yourself in the same desperate situation as the German populace under Hitler.

It's a fascinating and complex novel, although not one to read if you're looking for an escapist mystery.

A great read and very informative of the aftermath of WW II and the history of the period of the Nuremburg trials.
It's well researched, creative and well written.

the book and the movie.......2007-07-13

the author of this book has obviously watched an old classic movie, 'the third man', then wore surgical gloves to goof it into his own creation with a little bit more twists. watching this movie, then watching 'the third man', you might find something quite true like what i've just seen in another pathetic movie, 'the last stand'. there's a piece of dialog in that movie that i'd like you to have it too, something like: 'in the stand-up comedy show biz, everybody stealing everybody's jokes...' the cunning ones know how to steal them and adapted them by adding more twists in it, the bad and lazy ones just steal them as they are.

with all said here, i got nothing more to say. no matter it's 'the third man' or 'the good german', they seem to be quite similar.

Unconnected but 3.5 stars .......2007-04-26

I read this book in anticipation of watching the George Clooney/Cate Blanchett movie - I'm not certain I'll watch the movie now. I can't say I enjoyed it, yet I can't say I didn't. It wasn't one of those books that left you so conflicted or so deep and resonating that it stayed with you. Rather, it was a book that tried very hard.

There were moral conflicts that tried to dig deeper into the human psyche and the times than it actually did. Jake Geismar, returned to Germany for a story on the post-war world. Yet he spends the majority of the book looking either for his wartime (married) mistress, or after her, or following the death of a Tully, very insignificant American officer with no story whatsoever. The two never quite intersected, but I was left with the feeling that they were supposed to on a grander scale than they brushed.

In a truly convoluted plot, filled with only one extremely interesting secondary character, Gunter, we travel across Berlin. And back. And over it again. While all this is appealing in the history of the city, the postwar scenery, the hopelessness and helplessness of the people, and the arrogance of the conquering heroes (American, British, and Russian alike), it's all randomness.

Victorious, the Allies are once more at a standoff with the Communist Russians and in a race to acquire all the German Scientists they could. We want Lena's husband, the Russians now have him, Jake wants the husband out of the way, Lena's barely a blip on the plot-radar, and there's still Tully to consider. The plot is a thinly disguised reason to expound on the history of Berlin (which really is well done, I can't say that enough), and the affair between Jake and Lena.

And there's still no story for Jake.

I don't care what other people say of this book. Those affirmig it's fake, they hadn't ever read it. Or have some special reasons to do so. "Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see..." This book won't make you feel comfortable. It'll make you feel free. It'll make you feel you're "not the only one" to feel you'd been lied to for centuries.

Here is a serie of books which turns "the whole world" upside down. I learned a lot of it and I hope that a new book from A.T. Fomenko will follow very quick. A absolute must for everybody who is interested in history or even a little bit from it.

Prescient St Augustine?.......2006-02-05

We can so far divide the New Chronology into the following three parts:

a) The verifiable theory that proves consensual chronology wrong with the aid of astronomy, statistics and mathematics;

b) The new chronology hypothesis based on a new understanding of known historical facts and the most likely logical explanation of the most obvious inconsistencies inherent in the official version of history;

c) The history conjectures, that is experimental historical reconstructions based on assumptions that the authors believe to make sense in the light of their research and linguistic parallels - void of ironclad factual support to date.

Fomenko's theory complies with the most rigid scientific standards as a whole:

It gives a coherent explanation of what we already know.

- It is consistent: independent lines of inquiry all lead to the same conclusion.

- The predictions it makes are confirmed empirically.

Fomenko goes by the following axioms:

- Chronology is the basis of history;

- Human evolution has always been linear, gradual and irreversible;

- The "cyclic" nature of human civilization is a myth, likewise all the gaps, duplicates, "dark ages" and "renaissances" that we know from consensual history;

- The accumulation of geographical knowledge as reflected in cartography is a gradual and irreversible process;

- The chronological distance between a given manuscript and the events described therein is proportional to the amount of distortions it contains;

- There is no "useless" information in authentic ancient sources.

Why the mainstream historians do not shower mathematician Academician Dr.Prof Fomenko with thanks and laurels?

The Russians:

Because Fomenko asserts that there was no such thing as the Tartar and Mongol invasion followed by three centuries of slavery, providing a formidable body of documental evidence to prove his assertion. The so-called "Tartars and Mongols" were the actual ancestors of the modern Russians, living in a bilingual state with Arabic spoken as freely as Russian. The ancient Russian state was governed by a double structure of civil and military authorities. The hordes were actually professional armies with a tradition of lifelong conscription (the recruitment being the so-called "blood tax"). Their "invasions" were punitive operations against the regions that attempted tax evasion. Fomenko proves that Russian history as we know it today is a blatant forgery concocted by a host of German scientists brought to Russia by the usurper dynasty of the Romanovs, whose ascension to the throne was the result of coup d'état, charged with the mission of making their reign look legitimate. Fomenko proves Ivan the Terrible to be a collation of four rulers, no less. They represented the two rival dynasties - the legitimate rulers and the ambitious upstarts. The winner took it all! Over some 30 years of controversy, Russian historians have made a most remarkable transition - they were initially accusing the young mathematician Fomenko of anticommunist dissident activity and attempts to deface the historical legacy of Soviet Russia; nowadays the middle-aged mathematician is accused of adhering to "pro-communist Russian nationalism" and defacing the proud historical legacy of Great Russia.

The Westerners:

Because Fomenko blows consensual Russian history to smithereens, successfully removing a crucial cornerstone from underneath the otherwise impeccable edifice of World History. Fomenko adds insult to injury, wiping out one by one the Ancient Rome (the foundation of Rome in Italy is dated to the XIV century A. D.), the Ancient Greece and its numerous poleis, which he identifies as the mediaeval crusader settlements on the territory of Greece, and the Ancient Egypt (the pyramids of Giza become dated to the XI-XV century A. D. and identified as the royal cemetery of the Global "Mongolian" Empire, no less). The civilization of the Ancient Egypt is irrefutably dated to the XII-XV century A. D. with the aid of the ancient Egyptian horoscopes cut in stone. He was the first one to decipher and date all such horoscopes, coming up with mediaeval dates in every case. English historians rage at the suggestion that the history of Ancient England was de facto a Byzantine import transplanted to the English soil by the fugitive Byzantine nobility. To reward the English historians who consider themselves the true scribes of World History, the cover of the present book portrays Tintoretto's Jesus Christ crucified on the Big Ben.

The Chinese:

Because Fomenko wipes out the Ancient History of China outright. No such thing. Full point. The compilation of the so-called Ancient Chinese History is reliably datable to the XVII-XVIII century only. It is perfectly recognizable as the Ancient European history, reworked and transcribed in hieroglyphs as yet another historical transplantation, this time performed on the Chinese soil by the loving Jesuit hands. The Chinese are the next in line to go berserk. Chinese history is inevitably bound to get both more ancient and more eventful, proportionally to the growing involvement of China in the world affairs. Chinese historians will keep on finding valid proof of prehistoric Chinese spaceflights until the Politburo orders them to shut up.

The Arabs:

Too bad. Islam with all its key figures is datable to XV-XVI century A. D. Arabic historians may find consolation in the crucial historical role of the Ottoman Empire in the XVI-XVII century. The trouble is that this empire was initially a Christian state, with Hagia Sophia identifiable as Temple of Solomon, according to Fomenko! We can only guess if the acquisition of Alexander the Great (a Macedonian and a Christian) as the founder of the Muslim World Empire will make Fomenko's theories more acceptable to the Arabic mainstream. He certainly does not spare any holy cows at all, claiming The Stone of Qa'Aba in Mecca to contain the lost Arch of the Covenant.

The Divinity:

Despite of reiterated statement that his theory is all about chronology and not Religion, Fomenko stirs up a whole condominium of wasp nests. His collection of anathemas, fatwa, and other condemnations from all parties concerned is already considerable. Little wonder, considering that the history of religions à la Fomenko looks as follows: the pre-Christian period (before the XI century and JC), Bacchic Christianity (XI-XII century, before and after JC), JC Christianity (XII-XVI century) and its subsequent mutations into Orthodox Christianity, the Catholicism, Islam, Buddhism, and so on.

According to Fomenko we know strictly NOTHING about the events that predate the X century A. D.

St Augustin was prescient when he spoke unto us: "be wary of mathematicians, particularly when they speak the truth."

Something of a disappointment.......2005-09-09

After having read the first volume of this expected series of 7 volumes I was triggered by the thesis of these authors that ancient Greek and Roman history did in fact take place in the Middle Ages. So I started studying medieval history of the Middle East - also known as Islamic history - to find out if the opponents of the ancient Greeks and Romans - the Acheamenid Persians, Sassanids, Scythians, Egyptians, etc. - also have their duplicates in medieval history. My search was disappointing: none of the many medieval Islamic dynasties seemed to correspond to the ancient middle eastern rulers.

However, I did find a close correspondence between Herodotus' Persian kings and medieval events:

- the defeat and capture of an Anatolian king - the Lydian Croesus - by the Persian conqueror Cyrus is identical to the defeat and capture of another Anatolian king - sultan Bayezid - by the Asian/Mongol conqueror Tamerlane;
- the Persian conquest of Egypt by the cruel tyrant Cambyses reds almost exactly as the Ottoman conquest of Egypt by Selim the Grim (note the nickname!);
- Darius the Lawgiver of the Persian Empire looks very much alike to Sulayman the Magnificent, the Lawgiver in Islamic history;
- Xerxes, whose main claim to fame is to be defeated by the Greeks at the naval battle of Salamis, looks like Selim II (the Sot) whose main claim to fame is to be defeated by a Spanish-Italian alliance at the naval battle of Lepanto.

I should have expected Fomenko et al. to arrive at similar conclusions, however, they claim that the Persian kings are the alter egos of the Angevin kings of Sicily whose biographies do not contain the exploits of the Persian kings.

The similiarities I indicate lead to the conclusion that Herodotus must have written his Histories at the close of the 16th century. But this is extremely late, given that Herodotus is "the Father of History", so therefore all other "ancient" histories must have been fabricated even later. Yet, the founders of modern chronology - Scaliger and Petavius - laid their foundations also at the close of the 16th century and had the full corpus of ancient histories already at their disposal.

It seems to me that Fomenko has to address these inconsistencies, maybe in the forthcoming 5 volumes?

Another critique of their book is that the correspondencies between different rulers are often based on a superficial comparison of the biographies; upon a more thorough comparison many details appear that do not correspond at all.

Finally, the authors rely heavily on the works of Gregorovius (1821-1891!!) - his medieval histories of Rome and Athens - as the source of medieval history; these works are - at least in the West - hoplessly outdated and have been superceded by more up-to-date works (for instance, Julius Norwich's trilogy on Byzantine history is not even cited).

If you agree with Fomenko that Roman chronology is basically the foundation of the entire edifice of global chronology; you would also certainly agree that despite its numerous gaps and inconsistencies, Roman history is the best-documented field of ancient history, and thus a reference scale. But how well is the actual date of the Eternal City's foundation known?

Firstly, Rome is supposed to have been founded by the Trojans who had to flee after the fall of Troy. Some claim Rome to have been founded by Aeneas and Ulysses shortly after Troy had fallen; others are of the opinion that there was an entire dynasty that ruled for 500 years between the fall of Troy and the foundation of Rome.

Well, that's just an innocent 500 years long misunderstanding compared with what heretic Fomenko says, asserts, proves in his second volume: Second Roman Empire, Third Roman Empire, Biblical Kingdom of Israel, Biblical Kingdom of Judah, Holy Roman Empire are stories about basically same events, written from different points of view at different times. The underlying events have actually taken place during xii-xv cy. These histories have been written and perfected by multitude of highly talented humanist and clerical writers of xiii-xvi cy disguised as "ancients" with glorious names like Homer, Pluto, Thucydides etc..Chronology 2.0 beta..

Historians are kindly invited to report the bugs.

I am grateful to Patrick Schmidt for having placed in my hands a copy of the third edition of his book on Understanding American and German Business Cultures: A Manager's Guide to the Cultural Context in which American and German Companies Operate. As is so often the case at SIETAR Congresses, we exchanged some goodies in the hotel lobby in Sofia, and I hope Patrick found mine as good as I found his.

While not a new publication, Patrick's book is nonetheless a very solid, simple, and useful expose of the cultural differences between the way we operate when working with each other and why, despite our best efforts we fall short of pleasing each other and fall into annoyances often over what often look like small matters.

Whether you are German or USian, you can get a good quick profile of your own culture to the degree that you subscribe to it--and most of us do at some level even when we want to rebel against it. This is not a comprehensive cultural study but a practical one, at the interface of how we work together, our sense of what work is, our work habits.

Schmidt addresses the most salient issues in how we communicate at work (and elsewhere, of course). What we understand and how we need to listen to understand as well as to present to each other in a way that we can understand are all dealt with in a matter of fact way with occasional excursions into the historical and psychologically whys. He provides an overview of such things as values, lawsuits and ethics across borders, and a discussion format about for exploring what it takes to be interculturally competent--and all this in less than 100 pages.

Appendixed to the manual are brief, incisive case studies from real life with analysis and likely interpretations. Like life itself, this treatment leaves the door open to engagement and learning on the part of those who use it. Updated several times, it shows the author's commitment to continued learning and exploration of the topic. I will find it an immediate resource for class work and training.

I'm German, but I have lived for some years in Maryland.

While I don't agree with every detail, I think most of the stated analyisis is true.

After reading plenty of books about German and American culture, I recommend this book as one (perhaps the) best about this issue in the market.

Even the book provided evidence about in the book mentioned cultural differences because it is much more sophicated and detailed than American books usually are.

The book is a great resource for any newcomer to the subject(s) at hand. For those of us with actual hands-on experience in dealing with both, German and U.S. culture, the book is very helpful as it solidifies and/or corrects one's own perceptions and impressions.

I had to laugh when the author told us that one of the worse insults an American can give is someone is 'a total bore'. Otherwise, this book points out some interesting comparisons and contrasts between German and American cultures.

I remember the dread with which I first faced German genealogical records written or printed in Gothic script. It seemed like a completely alien alphabet. However, with a little practice and the useful examples in this book, you can decipher such records yourself.

This book covers the Gothic alphabet and shows variations of handwritten script for each letter. It then provides handwritten script examples of common genealogical words and their German and English translation. Handwritten symbols and common abbreviations found in Germanic records are also covered.

Sections are devoted to showing side-by-side comparisons of Latin, English, Danish, and handwritten German script for common genealogical terms, occupations & titles, and diseases. There is also a useful timeline. This handy book is spiral-bound.

The task of deciphering letters and documents written in the style of the last century can be a dismaying task. Edna Bentz' examples are very helpful to anyone who wants to learn. As she so positively indicates by her title: "If I Can You Can."

Excellent account of the Russian Front.......2007-10-17

I really enjoyed this book and I could not put it down. I finished it in a few days and I was there, vicariously, with Guy Sajer in those foxholes, with the artillery blasting, bodies blown into the air, and the smell of death all around. Mr. Sajer was just a teenager and was thrust into such a brutal war at such an early age, to be so exposed to all of this death and trajedy, is a crime unto itself. It is so important that books like this need to be printed so future generations can see, and feel, vicariously, the senseless and needless atrocities of war. This book is more compelling evidence that wars need to be outlawed on planet Earth. But I personally feel that more wars are coming in the near future. Humans will never learn...

A tale from his soul.......2007-09-22

I first read this story twenty years ago on the recommendation of a friend. To put it simply, I was blown away by the book. To ensure my review was meaningful to those who are thinking of reading this book I recently re-read it. What follows is my review of The Forgotten Soldier (current version) with some input from external analysis.

The Forgotten Soldier is Guy Sajer's autobiographical tale of his time in the German Army. In telling his tale, we're taken from initial training, thru his deployment on the Eastern Front in a transportation unit, his volunteering to join Gross Deutschland and following training, and his experiences thru the rest of the war as a member of Gross Deutschland as an infantryman. In each of the major sections, Mr. Sajer is the humble simple soldier that's just trying to survive. What capture you the most is Mr. Sajer's writing style. While most WWII personal account books are exact with their memories, Mr. Sajer is exact with telling us his feelings and not afraid to say he was a coward (personally I doubt this very much. Any person who lived thru the Russian Front from 1942 thru 1945 has to have been extremely brave). Other things that are notable when reading this book is that at several points, Mr. Sajer is wrong about weapons and other items. We're given the wrong caliber, tank type, and even told the wrong arm sleeve his Gross Deutschland armband was on. Does this make it not historical? No, it means that Mr. Sajer was not focused on those things like most historians are. What he focused on was his personal survival and the survival of his friends. Their survival and continuation was more important than anything else around them.

Rating wise, this book was extremely easy for me. 5 Stars! Why, this book was from his soul! All throughout the book, Mr. Sajer tells us about being the man on the outside looking in. When he enlists, he's a "foreigner" (his mother was German, his father French) that some Germans have a hard time trusting. By the end of the book, he's now a German soldier who must serve in the French Army to make himself a good Frenchman; while in the French Army he's now the seasoned soldier with a different background than any of the others. Other reasons for making this a 5 star book include excellent presentation and an excellent description of what it feels like to be in a hopeless situation and trying to survive. Is this book history, from a personal account - yes. Accurate, no. I question the dialog from different people (do we really remember what they said to the degree people will put their words in quotes, no...). Does he have some things reversed, yes, but then given the environment he was in (Hell...) I think I can understand it and believe this book. A book difficult to forget.......2007-08-31

While I read this marvelous book, I felt a landser my self; fighting side by side with Sajer and his comrades in arms. I felt my heart accelerating in every encounter with the red army, and felt in love when he met Paula. In the midst of the turmoil of World War Two, comradeship played a crucial role that kept the landsers effective up to the last stages of the conflict. At the very end of the book, Sajer tries to forget all the horrors he've been through, to forget everything, to be forgotten...

Written with a very interesting viewpoint,a Frenchman in the German army. War is hell! You will have more respect for the common foot soldier after reading this. If you want to know what it was like to fight the Russians read this.

Fine Book on Terrible War.......2007-07-03

Book arrived promptly in new condition. Writer gives first hand account of years spent in German Army in Russia, with awful horror. First account I have read of that war by an enlisted infantryman who experienced the worst imaginable. No polemics -- just his history. Bought it because I wanted to know why the German infantryman was the most effective soldier in WW II. Answers: The most rigorous training backed by iron discipline and camraderie w/ fellow soldiers.

The War and Peace of the WWII Air War.......2006-02-19

It is a pity that this book was produced in such limited numbers--only 2,000 copies were produced, all in rich leather and individually numbered--because it may well be the 'War and Peace' of the U.S. air war over Europe in World War Two. I first encountered this book some years ago, and since I was writing a history of the air war, contacted Mr. Alf and had the opportunity to spend time with him on several occasions. We talked extensively about his motivations for writing this book, which took him about fifty years from conception to completion. Mr. Alf was working on the screenplay for Petals of Fire at the time of his death.

Alf was a B-17 pilot in the 100th Bomb Group, who was shot down and became a prisoner of war. He began recording his thoughts and observations while in the camp, on whatever was handy. Some of the book was written on both sides of sheets of toilet paper. He was not only in the camps, he was also on a long winter march near the end of the war, and was twice bombed by allied aircraft while a prisoner.

This is not your traditional air crew memoir. It is a novel, and in it, Mr. Alf attempts to tell the story of the air war from the upper echelons down through the airmen themselves. He does this through his careful selection of characters. Extensively researched over many years, it is a milestone of history. It is a book to be treasured, and I hope that a publisher at some point will notice that and pick it up for republication.

Petals of Fire is, inherently, an anti-war novel. It traces the horrors of war, the snafus of the higher-ups and the effects on the men who must actually do the dying, all the while keeping all characters human and sympathetic. Though the book is classified as fiction, it draws so heavily from Alf's own experiences that the scenes about the aircrews, the prisoner of war experiences, and the long march are basically factual autobiography. For a full treatment of this outstanding book and the man who wrote it, you could read the chapter in the book "Untold Valor" entitled "Herb Alf's Journey", as it contains an in-depth analysis of the book and the man.

Herb Alf was a true American hero. He did his job, paid the price, and had the courage to look deeply into the complexities of war and reject most of war's premises. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, but his book will live on forever. If you are in any way interested in the air war, this book is absolutely required reading.
