Readers familiar with immigration history as told in books like Roger Daniels's Coming to America will experience a sense of déjà vu with Harvest of Empire by Juan Gonzalez. The immigrant experience is a constant in American life; although the tides ebb and flow, it seems that there always has been an immigrant presence in the United States. What's different today, of course, is where the immigrants are coming from: half are Latin American.
Gonzalez, a columnist for the New York Daily News, studies these latest arrivals in a book that combines history and journalism. He has a keen understanding of Hispanic diversity, focusing not just on "Hispanics" as a monolithic category but as a variety of people from many nations. The politics in Harvest of Empire are often tendentious: Gonzalez unfavorably compares U.S. border control efforts to building the Great Wall in China, demands an end to Puerto Rico's "colonial status," insists that Spanish become an official language actively encouraged in the public schools, and so on. His agenda will no doubt appeal to a certain kind of reader, but at the cost of alienating many others, including, probably, a majority of Hispanics living in the United States. For those looking for a left-leaning account of Hispanic immigration, however, this book succeeds as an ambitious survey. --John J. Miller
Book Description
Within the next decade, Hispanics will become the largest minority group in the United States. The new immigrants have ignited a vibrant Latin explosion in popular culture and deeply affected American society.
Spanning 500 years-from the first New World colonies to our nation's nineteenth-century westward expansion, from the days of gunboat diplomacy to the turn of the millennium-Harvest of Empire features family portraits of real-life immigrants along with sketches of the political events and social conditions that compelled them to leave their homeland. In addition, it gives a fascinating look at how these Latino pioneers have transformed the cultural landscape of the United States.

THE BOOK IS GREAT... I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT TO READ THE HISTORY WHICH IS HIDEN........2007-09-25
THE BOOK IS A GREAT TOOL FOR LATINOS WHO WANT TO KNOW MORE OF WHY THE COUNTRY'S OF THEIR FATHERS ARE IN THE STATE THEY ARE TODAY. I HAVE ENJOYED THIS BOOK A GREAT DEAL AND WILL PASS IT ALONG TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY.
It is cool.........2007-09-05
I have to read this book because of my class. However I really enjoyed to read this book. It was pretty interesting and making me to think about Latinos.
Addressing the matter of empire.......2006-11-13
It's so ironic to hear US citizens talk about an "invasion" of immigrants, while ignoring the way in which the US has been invading other countries for generations - either militarily or economically. It's great to see Juan Gonzalez analyze this elephant in the empire's living room.
With all of our technology, one would hope that people in the US would learn that there are other people in the world that are being harmed by the tax dollars they invest in militarism - a system of force that includes over 700 military installations in 132 countries, the funding and training of proxy armies, harmful behavior by CIA agents and "economic hit men" and other policies that create misery and refugees.
As Christians, or simply moral human beings, US citizens should welcome our Latino brothers and sisters, and maybe even offer an apology for the policies of this country's masters of war and corporate crime. Thankfully, countries like Venezuela and Bolivia are starting to resist the dictates of the World Bank and other institutions of neoliberalism.
For those who appreciate the views of Juan Gonzalez, you can hear him every day as the co-host of the award-winning "Democracy Now!" radio program.
I would also recommend the DVDs "When the Mountains Tremble" and Eugene Jarecki's "Why We Fight" for an understanding of our militarism and the way it causes suffering in Latin America.
"There is at the head of this great continent a very powerful country, very rich, very war-like, and capable of anything. . . The United States seems destined to plague and torment the continent in the name of freedom." -Simon Bolivar
Review of Harvest of Empire.......2005-05-27
Harvest of Empire, a book by Juan Gonzalez, gives a history of Latinos in the United States. The book is divided into three sections entitled "Roots," "Branches," and "Harvest." The first section contains three chapters that provide a brief history of the relationship between Latin America and the United States. The second section is composed of six chapters, each one devoted to one of the major groups of Latinos living in the United States. Each of the following groups are described in this section: Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Cubans, Dominicans, Central Americans, and Columbians and Panamanians share a chapter. Within the six chapters, Gonzalez writes about individuals or families in order to reflect the general migration story of the larger groups. Thus, these individual portrayals serve as representations of the larger collection of immigrants. In the third section Gonzalez discusses several topics relating to Hispanics living in the United States. The topics include politics, immigration, language and culture, free trade, and the state of Puerto Rico.
This book has several strengths. In the first section, Juan Gonzalez provides an informative summary of the history of colonization and expansion in the Americas. The summary is well-researched and easy to read. The main strength of section one is Gonzalez's explanation for why different societies exist today in the United States and Latin America. His theory is that different societies exist as a result of the historical antecedents to our modern society. In section two, the immigrant descriptions help to personalize each of the different groups and allow the reader to identify with their stories. Also, Gonzalez stresses the important differences between each of the various Latino immigrant groups in the United States. Gonzalez combines much historical research with personal interviews he has conducted of various immigrant families. In section three, Gonzalez raises several issues concerning Hispanics living in the United States that are timely. He also asserts six changes he believes are essential to ensure Latino prosperity and assimilation in the United States. The six changes he suggests are thought provoking and stimulating.
Although the book has many strengths, it also has limitations. The most obvious limitation of the first section is its brevity. Gonzalez attempts to summarize more than 500 years of history in less than eighty pages. As a result, much of the history described is generalized and collapsed into short, summary statements. Also, Gonzalez could have better organized sources for further reading and study. He does provide an extensive bibliography, but it is not organized according to subject matter. A better organization of the bibliography would have been more helpful. For example, a list of further readings at the end of each chapter would have been beneficial.
This book is well suited for those wishing to learn more about Hispanics in the United States. It would be ideal for use in a class on Hispanic culture. Also, it would be beneficial for those wishing to learn more about Hispanic immigration to the United States.
A different perspective.......2003-03-12
I am the Americanized Puerto Rican born in Brooklyn whose parents traded cultural awareness by restricting use of the Spanish language at home for assimilation and greater opportunity educationally. The trade off worked, I earned my BS in Management from Pepperdine University. The trade off didn't work, it is difficult for me to associate in any meaningful manner with fellow Puerto Ricans or Latin Americans in general. My African-American friends consider me white, my Anglo-American friends consider me black, and I am quickly shunned at times by Puerto Ricans just because I don't speak Spanish. Juan Gonzalez with great research and detail identified my subtle undefined (at the time) schizophrenic social engagements. Therapeutically, through historical narrative of US policy towards Puerto Rico, cause and affect of PR vs NYC migratory action from the 1940's through today, viewing the current environment of Puerto Ricans in the South Bronx or East Harlem, I've come to know myself better, appreciate those of my race with greater gravity, and understand that none of these actions are by chance. Macroeconomically, the environmental and immigration impact of US policy regarding the Caribean Basin Initiative or NAFTA that are extensively noted and bibliographed, quite simply created a different perspective on my training in business and foreign investment. Mr. Gonzalez does not stop there. He tackles bilingualism, revisits and reexamines American History in a manner not expressed to me in any classroom...ever...then through citings of other works, backs it up. It is the most refreshing book I've read since the Autobiography of Malcolm X with Alex Haley, due to it's clarity and insight for the human quest for internal and external truths.

Worth the Price.......2006-08-18
Although I've developed macros for years in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, and PowerPoint, this book still gave me new information and ways to accomplish tasks. The book is well worth the time to wander through. The only suggestion I have is that unless things have changed, PowerPoint has to dynamically create and assign macros to the buttons via the Auto_Open subroutine. An Add-In is created and loaded. This wonderfulness might have been briefly explained. But maybe the assumption is that folks know this already. I'm speaking from the perspective of a person who is new to PowerPoint macros.
Book Description
In this groundbreaking study of American imperialism, leading legal scholars address the problem of the U.S. territories. Foreign in a Domestic Sense will redefine the boundaries of constitutional scholarship.
More than four million U.S. citizens currently live in five âunincorporatedâ U.S. territories. The inhabitants of these vestiges of an American empire are denied full representation in Congress and cannot vote in presidential elections. Focusing on Puerto Rico, the largest and most populous of the territories, Foreign in a Domestic Sense sheds much-needed light on the United States’ unfinished colonial experiment and its legacy of racially rooted imperialism, while insisting on the centrality of these âmarginalâ regions in any serious treatment of American constitutional history. For one hundred years, Puerto Ricans have struggled to define their place in a nation that neither wants them nor wants to let them go. They are caught in a debate too politicized to yield meaningful answers. Meanwhile, doubts concerning the constitutionality of keeping colonies have languished on the margins of mainstream scholarship, overlooked by scholars outside the island and ignored by the nation at large.
This book does more than simply fill a glaring omission in the study of race, cultural identity, and the Constitution; it also makes a crucial contribution to the study of American federalism, serves as a foundation for substantive debate on Puerto Rico’s status, and meets an urgent need for dialogue on territorial status between the mainlandd and the territories.

THIS IS AN ENGAGING AND EFFECTIVE WAY TO PRESENT THE ETHIOLOGY OF A DILEMA THAT HAS BEEN OUT OF FOCUS FOR ONE HUNDRED YEARS. THE EDITORS HAVE CHOSEN A VARIED SPECTRUM OF VIEWS, AND IT IS THROUGH THESE DIFFERENT LENSES THAT THE ISSUE SHOULD BE DISCUSSED.
Fundamental analysis.......2001-10-24
If you need to read about Puerto Rico or are doing research, this should be your first stop. This book is the most comprehensive and well documented book ever written on the legal situation of Puerto Rico. Anybody who has anything to do with the island needs to read this book first.

Excellent source book.......2007-07-25
Other than not caring for the Castillian pronunciation, this is an excellent source book for my studies! It should help me master my Spanish because of having such a wellspring of words.
Good support website.......2006-07-30
Nowadays I find myself look up words online more often then checking my hardcover dictionary. It is fast and costs me nothing. Buying a dictionary seems less important.
Velazquez Spanish and English Dictionary have a support website called AskVelazquez.com. It is free, and I can ask questions, either for the new words that I can't find in the dictionary or grammar issues when I do the translation. I find this site very useful, and it makes my Velazquez Dictionary even more useful.
Velazquez Spanish and English Dictionary also contain words from not just Spain and Mexico, but usages from Puerto Rico, Peru or Argentina. It is a very complete reference dictionary. I only wish there is an electronic version.
I LOVE this Dictionary!.......2006-06-29
I'd consider it to be the best Spanish/ English dictionary there is. It's the best because it's very comprehensive and has a wealth of knowledge in translating both languages. It has SO MANY words, which is like over 250,000 entries. What I also love about it is that it's been updated for the 21st century and also includes different types of Spanish words from different kinds of Spanish-speaking countries, not just Spain. I think it's perfect for Spanish teachers and for those students who are taking advanced Spanish courses. The color-coded thumb-indexes make it easy to flip through as well.
Velazquez Spanish and English Dictionary.......2006-06-10
I have never found a more comprehensive dictionary in my experience with the English and Spanish Languages. Aside from being very helpful because of its guide to Spanish pronunciation, it includes useful color coded tabs, and even a list of currencies from Spain and Latin America. I would recommend this dictionary to anyone who needs the tools for everyday as well as academic bilingualism. It is a very impressive dictionary and I will never buy another one (unless this one is revised again).
A solid choice for Spanish literature.......2006-03-13
I have been using this dictionary to help with Spanish poetry and literature this semester, and it has been extremely helpful. I have been able to find all but a few words in here. Good multiple definitions provided to cover the various usages of each word; even subtle distinctions noted. Pages clearly marked and easy to use.
My only complaints are: several typographical errors that I have noticed, and does not explicitly indicate el/la or masc/fem for nouns (must determine from example sentences).
This dictionary was originally published in Spain, so all the pronunciation guides are for a generalized Spanish dialact--I wouldn't recommend it for beginning speakers of Latin-American Spanish, as it may be confusing (or simply overwhelming in its sheer size!). For intermediate to advanced speakers on either side of the Atlantic, though, I feel this would be a solid choice.

Pedro Paramo (English Version).......2007-10-08
The book is translated into English from its original Spanish version. It's a complex book with references to Greek mythology and takes a bit of careful observation to fully understand. I'd recommend it to people who have rich, previous knowledge of Greek mythology.
If only he had done it.......2007-09-13
If only he had written a story that could be read with some continuity and insight. The opening sentence is great, and he follows through for 3 or 4 pages of a story that looks promising. But there it turns into jabberwocky as you try to figure what is going on and who is dead or alive. Finally, one gives up. If the writer does not communicate with the reader, what is the purpose of the writing? Perhaps if one could discover how the writer was managing to elude reality, he could partake of the same substance and enjoy this story. I don't care to take the chance.
Regrettably, Reading This Felt as If Time Had Turned Backward.......2007-07-22
Those who like novels where it often doesn't become unclear until the third or fourth read what's happening, who's speaking, who's listening, who's doing what, how most of the characters are related to each other, and how the series of events described are related to each other in time, would enjoy this novel. Otherwise, like me, they might not be able to appreciate it.
Mainly what I could grasp was that a man was looking for his father in a village that was a purgatory for dead sinners, where time turned backward. The father was the local landowner and a tyrant who'd committed many crimes. Eventually the searcher faded from the story. The historical background supplied by other readers is valuable and enlightening but is immeasurably clearer in their descriptions than in the novel itself.
The novel consisted mostly of dialogue, with the features described above. There were also descriptions of the village and its surroundings. The atmosphere of the hot, bleak land and death and of the hopelessness of the characters was powerful. But for this reader, the book didn't need to continue for 120 pages. I might've been able to appreciate this surrealist masterpiece if it had been something closer in form to a short story, like some of the works in the same author's The Burning Plain, such as "Tell Them Not to Kill Me!" or "The Man."
Marvelous Story.......2007-04-02
I first read this book in a university Spanish class. It is a classic that will endure forever and speaks to all people.
Del olvido al no me acuerdo.......2006-02-01
Gabriel Garcia Marquez said this was the best book ever written in the Spanish language after the Quixote, certainly many writers and even some novel prizes will not be able to write a book so simple and at the same time so deep and complex, full of delicate and exuberant poetry like this is. The extreme qualities of this book I think have been already described by so many good-taste costumers as well as denied by some confused spirits that would do best giving their opinion about cheap soap-operas, bestsellers (and with some restrictions),TV shows, the super bowl... (things that can stimulate their minds) but certainly not about literature. Nevermind. For those interested in going deeper inside the atmosphere from which Juan Rulfo subtracted his characters, the Independent low-budget documental "Del Olvido al no me acuerdo", directed by Juan Rulfo's son Juan Carlos Rulfo, can reveal a lot about Rulfo's work. The documental is in itself a micro-masterpiece that was awarded in several international film festivals.

Book Description
Eva Peron (1919-1952) was the First Lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death in 1952. Often referred to as "Evita," she was never an officially elected political figure, but by her husband's second term as President, she had become the most powerful woman in the history of her nation. By the 1960s, Evita was an international pop-culture icon; in the 1970s, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice wrote the blockbuster musical Evita about her; and in the mid-90s, the musical was adapted to a movie starring Madonna. This small, chunky paperback features all manner of vintage graphic treatments from the era of Evita--from candid portraits with her husband and two poodles to futuristic airplane designs to children's books which used the letters of her name to teach spelling. As Jorge Luis Borges once said, "Peronists are neither good nor bad, they are incorrigible."

Peron propaganda..........2007-09-25
This is a great book. Lots of Peronist images to show how important propaganda was to the Perons. The introduction is in Spanish, but there is an English translation at the end of the book. Well worth it.
"She Came From the People...".......2007-04-04
This curious little item offers hundreds of colorful images of Peronist Argentina during Peron's first 2 terms in office. Both Juan and Eva's faces graced several pro-Peronist magazines such as "Mundo Peronista" and several of those covers are showcased here. What is interesting is the romantic image they chose to display to their adoring "Descamisados". Juan usually appeared as a charismatic strongman, tall, imposing, with a ready smile and Eva, his caring and nurturing spouse, gracious and elegant, with a warm smile, always ready to give a helping hand. Eva Peron herself was a potent mixture of youth, power and glamour. Her image was used effectively in the covers of magazines, posters and buttons. In several of these illustrations, she appears as an ethereal being, blonde & lovely, a complete contrast to the vulgar images of those who despised her, her husband and their controversial movement.
The book itself offers very little written information pertaining to the Peron's history and their myth making and concentrates more on the pictures. All of them taken from magazines, newspapers, posters, flyers, buttons, children's textbooks etc from the time period and those who are interested in the Peron legend will find this book rather interesting. It is obvious to the observer that the Peron's did everything in their power to feed the "White" myth, especially in Eva's case. In several drawings and doctored photographs, she is portrayed as a saintly goddess looking up at the heavens or looking down at her children and/or surrounded by light giving her the essence of a saint. One must keep in mind that the majority of these images were displayed after Eva's untimely death, since her people mourned her immensely, these images of a beautiful, healthy, smiling Eva Peron up in the heavens must have been comforting to her people and is reason enough to understand the constant use of this "saintly" image and since Juan Peron realized that she was a major factor within his government and therefore a major loss, he more than welcomed it and did nothing to discourage it. Peron knew that her legend was more potent then his and he must have realized the day he was ousted in 1955 that he would spend the rest of his life living in Evita's shadow.
Juan and Eva are both dead and have been for a very long time yet they remain very much alive in their native Argentina where they're loved and despised with equal abandon. It is safe to say that they were successful in their efforts in immortalizing their legend. This book shows us just how they did it. At a time when a nation was at its most vulnerable, they created a myth and cemented it in the hearts of their people. Whether through skillful manipulation or through genuine desire to help the nation and its poor is open to discussion but considering their impact in Argentina, one cannot deny their brilliance.
"Peron Willing" is recommended to the history buff and of course to Juan and Eva Peron's admirers since it offers a valuable insight to their everlasting legend. I just wished the book was bigger and more comprehensive since several of these colorized prints are striking and would have benefited greatly in a larger format. But it's still a good purchase and the book itself is thick and well put together.
Book Description
What public officials failed to say about post-9/11 New York air.
I am glad to reassure the people of New York...that their air is safe to breathe and their water is safe to drink.Christie Todd Whitman, Administrator of the EPA, September 18, 2002
Officials knew that their own preliminary environmental tests of the air, dust, and water in lower Manhattan...found considerable amounts of asbestos and heavy metals.from Fallout
On the strength of reassurances from Christie Todd Whitman and Mayor Giuliani that it was safe to do so, thousands of Lower Manhattan residents moved back to their apartments within weeks of September 11, kids returned to local schools, office staff resumed work. There was just one problem: those reassurances were not based in fact.
A source of controversy and embarrassment when it first appeared in hardcover, investigative reporter Juan González's damning indictment of the Giuliani administration and EPA shows that, in their rush to get the cityand Wall Street in particularback to work, the mayor and Whitman put tens of thousands of downtown residents and workers at risk.
Initially dismissed as alarmist, Fallout has since been corroborated by reports in The National news media documenting the long-term health implications of an enormous failure of leadership.
Customer Reviews:
must read.......2005-06-09
Juan Gonzalez was the first journalist to grasp the impact of the environmental disaster of 9/11. His article on October 26, 2001 said what some of us already sensed: Contrary to the 'good news' being sold like sugarcoated poison by government officials who wanted Wall Street back up and running, the air was dense with astronomical levels of asbestos, lead, dioxin, mercury and hundreds of unpronouncable contaminants including some that had never previously existed.
Fallout is in this tradition of groundbreaking journalism.
Unfortunately Gonzalez is so ahead of the pack that when I showed his article to my son and exhusband, whom I was trying to convince that our son should not remain at Stuyvesant High School, four blocks north of the World Trade Center, they dismissed it as a red herring.
Fallout is a compelling account of this environmental disaster which may ultimately claim more lives than the attacks themselves.

A Must Read If You or A Loved One worked at Ground Zero.......2003-07-10
Finally someone has the guts to print the truth about the toxic air at Ground Zero. For those of us who were there and who are experiencing the medical consequences of having been exposed to these toxic chemicals, Gonzalez's book explains in understandable language why we are sick and what we are likely to experience in the future. Americans need to know the truth, especially the thousands of men and women from around the country who volunteered their time at Ground Zero and are likely to suffer the medical consequences of having done so, either now or in the future. Fallout is a must read for all Americans.
Where Is This Story In The Media?.......2002-11-30
This is an extremely disturbing book. Perhaps because along with the well-documented facts concerning the unprecedented toxic environmental fallout from 9/11, it is the shocking realization that it's not just the NYC and federal goverment cover-up of this story -- it is the citizens themselves collectively turning away from the horrible reality of this disaster.
The national media has not pursued the obvious leads -- the common sense questions -- but Mr. Gonzales has. And the logical conclusion of this story, in the not-too-distant future, is a public health nightmare that will have the media self-righteously condeming Giuliani and Whitman in hindsight as bearing responsibility for perhaps thousands more deaths.
The story from 9/11 that the media immediately created was of the heroes and victims. We remember them, and try to forget the horror of the collapsing towers. But if we are a truely a courageous nation, we will look clearly and not turn away from the terrible reality that ground zero represents. That is what I think this book is really about -- there are facts and consequences of 9/11 that have not yet been dealt with. And closing our eyes and wishing them away simply won't work.
Patriots: Read This and Weep!.......2002-10-17
Americans are being deceived. In this stunning piece of investigative reporting which should be awarded a Pulitzer Prize, Juan Gonzalez reveals the horrible truths about the environmental impacts of the 9-11 disaster. Asbestos abounded. The many heroes who helped to clean and console may face excruciating deaths thanks to suppressed and inaccurate information.
Our sacred institutions are rotten. Every American citizen should read this brief but incendiary work which speaks truth to power unflinchingly. If we do not quickly institute major changes which make our leaders and representatives truly responsible for telling the truth to the American public, however unpleasant, we may be facing the end of American democracy as we have known it and believed in it.
Where are the Thomas Paines and Thomas Jeffersons of the twenty-first century? We desperately need your voices and leadership!
The FBI Failed Us Before 9/11; The EPA Failed Us Afterwards.......2002-06-26
I live 5 blocks north of Ground Zero and have attended hearings and forums and read hundreds of articles, studies memos and reports about the post 9/11 environmental issues in Lower Manhattan. But my jaw dropped when I read Juan Gonzalez' book - here are the missing pieces, the things I'd heard but was never able to find in print - and lots of insider information that only someone as dedicated to this story as he was could have. It is a clear, readable summary of the case against the EPA, OSHA, NYC DEP - and, de facto, an indictment of all those newspapers whose reportage consistently minimized the issue. Not since the Vietnam War has there been so much media "disinformation."
If you live or work in lower Manhattan and/or have any interest in the true story of how our government knowingly and intentionally jepordized the lives and health of the rescue workers, residents and workers downtown after 9/11 while ensuring that their own health was well protected, this book is a "must read."
Juan Gonzalez is to be commended for his courage in bucking his editors to continue to cover this story.
