Explotation Goodness.......2007-09-14
This book is an excellent companion piece to the two movies that were part of the in theater double feature collectively known as Grindhouse.
The book treats us to plenty of pictures of not just the lovely ladies, of which there are many, but of everything from the movie. Included is the script for Planet Terror along with plenty of commentary about the filmaking process and the support network of both Robert and Quentin.
Unlike other film related books this one is not a fluff piece, there is a lot of material between the covers and this book is definately worth reading more than once.
Awesome.......2007-08-24
It's everything I expected and more! Loads of pictures and information. Even QT's AMI playlist. I love it XD
What a Ride.......2007-06-27
Talking about the movie, the girl riding on the hood of the challenger was quite a stunt and I have to admit that it was original and very edgy.
The girls in this movie were well cast and Cherry is hot.I can't wait to buy the DVD, hurry up and release it!
Not sleazy at all.......2007-05-25
Great transaction! No SLEAZY here! The book is great. The shipping was super fast. Thanks a whole bunch!
Grindhouse: The Sleaze-filled Saga of an Exploitation Double Feature.......2007-05-18

Great Read.......2007-10-15
I have to admit I just got this book a couple of days ago and have not finished. What I have read though is great. His book in not just a how to book. Its entertaining and very inspiring. I really enjoyed reading about Rodriguiz spend 30 days as a medical experiement to make $3000 to help pay for his movie.
Rebel Withou A Crew.......2007-09-28
This book is very good. It is encouraging and helpful to any young film maker like myself. I highly recommend it. It's worth the money.
Great read, inspiring.......2007-09-23
Tells the story of how Rodriguez got to where he is. Everyone's road is very different but this is definitely an inspiring book. Hone your skills!
Excellent!.......2007-08-14
I bought this thinking it would be more of a guide then the journal it ended up being, and I couldnt have been happier. It was an interesting and easy read that I couldnt put down! I would definitely recommend this book to any young filmmakers or anyone interested in the independent process. Rodriguez really does a great job of showing how a lot of hard work, dedication and some luck can jump start a career. I felt inspired to go out and start working on films again, but I'm still reluctant to join any medical experiments to finance it.
Interesting insight into a very talented man.......2007-08-06
A great tale, but not so well written that I could recommend on its literary quality alone. I admire Rodriguez - even more, knowing what he went through to make this film (and I'm a fan El Mariachi more than the overly-produced Once Upon a Time in Mexico). The story-telling reflects his jagged style. At the very least, it should inspire you to make a few sacrifices in favor of pursuing one of your own dreams.

Superb for price.......2005-08-30
One of the most informative and professionally layed out books about a movie I have ever read. Usually you would have to pay top dollar to buy a book of such high quality. Definately recommend to any film enthusiast or maker!
Frank Miller's Sin City : The Making of the Movie.......2005-08-28
Frank Miller is a comic book god, rejuvenating classic stories like Batman and Daredevil while simultaneously conjuring up well-written and provocative tales of sinister film noir and graphic novel impressionist avant-garde violence. One of the most impressive and original movies I've seen for years, SIN CITY blew me away with its knowingly malicious nature, razor-edge script and frenetic action. To have such revolutionary geniuses like Miller and Quentin Tarintino collaborate on a film like this, it's more than welcome for American audiences looking for a non-traditional event that shakes the rule book, rips out all the pages and burns them. This behind the scenes tome, penned by Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez is filled to the brim with all the essentials that make a great backstage look at the absorbing world of filmmaking. Containing the entire screenplay for Sin City, a widespread behind the scenes photo collection, cast and filmmakers feelings on the film, nicely presented publicity material for the marketing, and so much more. Lavishly presented and with enough info to satisfy the most ardent fan, what more could you want? This is indispensable material for any film fan, and a great value, it makes this even more appealing. If you don't already have this enthralling manuscript, buy it now!
Astonishing & insightful.......2005-08-17
Simply all you could ask for. Detailed journey through the entire movie with quotes from the director and the author. Excellent quality pictures. Great behind the scenes information and gossip. Can't wait for the sequels!!!
If you loved the movie you'll love the book..........2005-08-04
If you know a decent movie when you see one, you'll love this book on the making of Sin City. It explains how the movie was taken from graphic novel to screen. It has quotes from the cast and crew, the screenplay in it's entirity, as well as some awesome pictures. It goes into detail about the wardrobe and cars in the movie, and how they achieved the comic-book style that they were going for. Plus, almost every page has a page from the graphic novel in the background, so if you've never read the original Sin City you pretty much can by buying this book (If your eyesight's good enough, that is).
immaculate.......2005-08-03
one of the most beautiful publications i've seen, the pictures are immaculate quality! the book is comprised of excerpts from the comics and interviews with key players (mainly robert and frank). it is a fine collectable, packed full of pictures of stills in various stages of production (from a frame of the comic, to a blue screen image, to the final composite). published by rodriguez's own publishing company, which explains the extraordinary quality on every page. the book also has a beautiful hardcover with matte finish. the book is also quite large, and definately great value for the price.
Book Description
Is publishing a cultural or commercial endeavor? Drawing on extensive data sets and applying the theoretical tools of both sociology and economics, The Culture and Commerce of Publishing in the 21st Century is the definitive social and economic analysis of the current state and future trends of the industry. This book examines the substantive issues, challenges, and problems confronting the diverse, and in many ways fragile, book publishing industry in the United States. The authors specifically emphasize the consumer, college textbook, and scholarly publishing components of the U.S. book publishing industry as they analyze the cultural and economic structure of the book publishing industry in the twenty-first century.
The book begins by charting the changes in the book publishing industry between 1945 and 2005, then goes on to examine industry specifics, strategies being employed for domestic and global competitiveness, and the economics of publishing and the impact of technology. Through in-person interviews and a broad sampling of people from every sector of the industry it examine the demographic trends in play. The temperature of the current publishing culture is presented in a chapter titled “I'm Glad I'm Not An Author . . .” The book ends by looking forward, highlighting the trends likely to impact the growth of the industry in the future.
Throughout the book, the tables provided track the industry from 1945 until 2005, and give the reader a snapshot of the data year-by-year, and category by category: bestsellers, average book prices, U.S. bookstore sales, average sales by category, and the demographic breakdown of readers. It also provides forecasts for the coming years, both units and revenues, for 2005-2009. The thoughtful analysis presented in this book will be valuable to leaders in publishing as well as the scholars and analysts who study this industry.

A Report on Mainstream Book Publishing.......2006-12-01
This book purports to answer the question, 'Is publishing a cultural or commercial endeavor.' The answer, of course, is a simple, 'Yes.' To the large corporation owning a publishing company the answer is 'mostly commercial.' To a unversity press (this book is published by Stanford University Press), the answer is probably somewhere in the middle. This book, for instance, is not likely to make the best seller charts. To a church owned press, or a self-published book the answer is probably 'mostly cultural.'
This book concentrates mostly on the larger companies, the publishers whose names we all know. There isn't much from the World War II soldier that has just decided to publish his memoirs, or the church that has put it's significant books on the web for anyone to read.
The general feeling about the industry is not good. The percentage of readers in the country has gone down. The small book stores are having to find niches where Barnes & Noble and WalMart don't compete. And all of this is true.
Then there's Harry Potter, where even the announcement of the title of the next book gets announced on the evening network TV news. And there were 172,000 new books published in the US in 2005; 375,000 published in the English Speaking World. New technologies makes small print runs more profitable. Internet marketing is as of yet, an unknown. As this book says in it's final sentence, 'The game changed in the summer of 1995 when Jeff Bezos opened Amazon.com; we just do not know whether the game changed for better or worse.
This book is one view of the book publishing industry in America. Anyone with a position of responsibility in the business will ignore it at their peril.

The Unicorn Sonata.......2006-05-24
This book is very carefully bittersweet. Joey, short for Josephine, is disenchanted with modern life. She spends most of her time in a small California music shop owned by an old Greek man who gives her music lessons in exchange for her help around the store. One day she begins hearing strange, enchanting music, seemingly started by a mysterious boy named Indigo who plays an instrument unlike anything she has ever seen, and follows the melody until she stumbles into an entirely different world. Here she meets satyrs and tiny dragons and water-nymphs... and eventually, unicorns.
The plot in this book is somewhat subtle. You go into it thinking it will be a typical 80s/90s feel-good type of thing where a troubled young teenager has a great adventure, is bettered for it, and ends up loving the normal world just because s/he has grown up some over the course of the adventure. But eventually you see the book it is not about that at all, but more about Joey's keeping contact with it, her struggling desire to capture unicorn songs in the modern world, and unblinding the old unicorns. This book definitely has more to do with its world, the unicorns, and the simple obersvations of characters than it does with a plot. Luckily the story flows smoothly and this works out OK, if only because Peter S. Beagle is such an amazing author.
I did not like this book as much as I enjoyed The Last Unicorn, since I do typically get more swept up in dynamic storylines rather than subtle ones, but this book definitely kept my fancy well. It is also not quite as beautifully written as Peter S. Beagle's most well-known novel, but perhaps this one just speaks to me less on a personal level. I'm an unfortunate escapist, so I did instantly connect with Joey, but this story is just not as touching as The Last Unicorn.
Definitely a good novel and a book worth reading.
Fall asleep and dream of this beautiful fantasy world.......2005-06-07
I am a huge fan of the last unicorn and I've been collecting unicorns since I was a little girl (When The Last Unicorn movie came out in 1982). Even though this book is at about an elementary/Jr. High reading level, I had to pick it up and read it. I was not disappointed. I was drawn into the beautiful fantasy world created by Mr. Beagle. After finishing the book I went to sleep that night and had a wonderful dream that I was in the world with the unicorns and other creatures. You have to read this book and drift into this wonderful world of childhood, if only for one good dream.
A lovely book.......2003-09-22
This really is a beautiful book, and I believe if it had been published 20 years ago it would have been a huge seller in the fantasy market. I think the reason some of the other reviewers have not enjoyed the work as much is because this sort of fantasy kingdom has been portrayed before--Never Never Land, Middle Earth, Narnia--even the world of The Last Unicorn itself. Still, at the end, I found myself yearning for Beagle's mythical kingdom. And Abuelita is a wonderful character. A slower, older style, but worth finishing.
The Unicorn Sonata.......2003-04-10
The Unicorn Sonata, written by Peter S. Beagle, is about a lack-luster 13 year old girl named Josephine Riveira who accidentally stumbles upon a magical land called Shei'rah. The story that unfolds is both riveting and beautiful. The Unicorn Sonata is a wonderful read, accessible to both children and adults and successfully brings back the sort of magical world that we seem to have forgotten in today's chaotic society.
The Last Unicorn for elementary school readers!.......2003-02-24
I am huge fan of Beagle's "The Last Unicorn," and finally have decided to check out some of his other works. This is the first one I grabbed off the shelf because it is also about unicorns. I was a little disappointed because the plot is very slow and not that interesting, and the dialogue is not very deep or memorable. It lacks most of the lyrical qualities of "The Last Unicorn" in both plot and style. However, I don't think this a bad book!!! Its just different, that's all. I'm sure that Beagle had a different audience in mind. If I were 10 or 12 I would be raving about this book for sure! Call it a "Last Unicorn" for elementary school readers. "The Last Unicorn" is a difficult book after all, full of beautiful poetry, deep characters, and detailed descriptions. Perhaps this is a good stepping stone for younger readers to use... and eventually discover "The Last Unicorn!"

Customer Reviews:
I loved ths book.......2006-08-04
This book has excellent writing, almost as good as Harry Potter books. It used all the pages carefully - meaning it took the time to explain details. I liked the characters and it is a good fantasy book.
This book has good qualities.......2005-07-15
This book is good with action and thrilling details. If you liked the movie you'll like this book. I couldn't put it down. I recommend it to both boys and girls ages 10-13.

Shark boy and LavaGirl Book.......2007-01-10
My son loves this book. Thankfully we found it, because there isn't anything else for the true sharkboy fan to own. no costumes or action figures, etc...
great addition to the movie
Wonderful!.......2006-03-14
My son loves anything shark boy so to find this book just made his day. He has brought it to show and share at preschool twice and although only four years old already knows if we have skipped a page when reading it to him.
excellent book.......2005-12-02
This book follows the movie word for word. My daughter loved the movie and is fascinated by the book. She has me read it to her almost every day. It has picture illustrations throughout the whole book that match up with the movie also. Very good book for anyone that loved the movie.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant!.......2000-11-04
What more can I say? Anders is awesome, as are Rockwell, Rodriguez, and of course, Quentin Tarantino. This is a marvelous screenplay, definitely one of my faves. I'm so glad they produced this screenplay!
I'm also a big Tim Roth fan, so I decided to pick up a copy of the play when I saw it being auctioned. I'm so glad I did! There's some great storyboards as well as some black and white pictures of the film.
It's a great bargain! If you loved the movie as much as I did, you'll love this! A+!
rather than film..........1999-04-28
The idea was conceptually unoriginal but the actual screenplay turned out to be a magical thing that could not, with all our trying, become what it was in the text; An imaginative piece where all involved brought something worthy to the table. The film which it subsequently became is not even on par with what we could call a "movie". A mess is more the truth. Rodriguez' segment is the only worth viewing and then Quentin's second only because this was still when he was hot and feeling like the character he portrayed. 'Jackie Brown' humbled him. I know it did. The screenplay is a stand-alone and should be approached as such. Do not view the film once done. This diminishes all previous effort.

The continuing adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl.

Some fun reading!.......2007-05-01
My 6 year old son enjoyed the story and characters after seeing the movie. I ordered him this book as a gift. He is a beginner reader, so, his dad and I read to him and he really loves the creative descriptions of the people and the places. This book is helping him see how fun reading can be. He can read some of it himself. We are anxiously waiting for book 3, "The Deep Sleep".
This book is great.......2006-08-04
Just like the first, this book uses great detail to explain what is going on. It keeps you guessing about what is about to happen and if they can find you know who. I really want the third book to come out soon.
Something I finally liked to read!.......2005-06-08
It was really good. I liked how they made cool details about downtown and Imagineer. I liked some of the new characters Shark Boy and Lava Girl met. It was exciting to read with lots of action. I don't usually read unless a teacher says I have to but I read Vol 1 and 2 in just 2 days for each book. My Mom was amazed! I'm almost 10 years old. I really want to read Vol 3 but Mom can't find it anywhere yet.
