5 out of 5 stars Her past catches up with her..........2004-05-24

Elizabeth Rossiter is a governess working in a small town in the south, well away from London and polite society. And that's the way she likes it. Nothing unexpected ever happens; she takes care of her charges, who will soon be launched into Society, and her employers treat her as a member of the family. She's safe.

Even when the new owner of the local big house, Ferndale, arrives to view his property, Elizabeth has no notion that her life is about to be completely disrupted. And why should it? William Mainwaring, the new owner, is perfectly polite and amiable, if a little shy in company. Interestingly, he seems to show a partiality for Elizabeth, despite her position as governess.

But Mainwaring has company on his visit to Ferndale, and one of his guests happens to be Robert Denning, Marquess of Hetherington - a man whom Elizabeth had hoped never to see again. And she'd been successful for more than six years. Until now; until he'd appeared without warning in the place where she'd found sanctuary. And then he seems to be around everywhere Elizabeth goes, giving her disapproving looks, making pointed remarks about mercenary behaviour and even, at one point, warning her off Mainwaring in such terms as make it clear that Hetherington believes that she's only after Mainwaring's money. And, even more insulting, Hetherington even tells Elizabeth that if she needs money she only need apply to him and he will supply it - the implication being that he would be relieved to be able to pay her off.

What was Hetherington and Elizabeth's past relationship? Why does he hate her so much? Why are her feelings for him so clearly torn between hatred and a deep, deep longing? What about Mainwaring's interest in Elizabeth?

Balogh's talent as a storyteller, always obvious, is even more clear in A Chance Encounter. She keeps readers guessing about Elizabeth's past and what Hetherington has to do with it, and when the truth was revealed some way into the book I was stunned. Nothing I had read so far had led me even to suspect the revelation, and yet when I re-read the earlier portion of the book nothing argued against it either. It was a masterful piece of writing.

Balogh is also an expert at writing stories which pull on the readers' emotions, and this book is a classic example. It's angsty, it has moments of humour, it's suspenseful and it's heartwrenching. I couldn't put it down from the moment I started it.

Unfortunately, like most of Balogh's early Regencies, it's out of print; until her publisher sees sense and starts to re-release her earlier work, the only way you can get hold of it is to pay an inflated price to get it second-hand. And yet it's worth it! Oh, and if you do get a used copy, it won't be mine - that's staying right where it is!

3 out of 5 stars Excellent first half, but the second part was disappointing.......2003-05-01

Elizabeth Rossiter lives a peaceful life as a Lady companion in Granby, far from the stifled scandal that drove her away from London six years earlier. Taking care of the young Cecily Rowe is all she needs for an uneventful and pretence of a somewhat happy life...

... until shadows of her past come back to haunt her unexpectedly.

They come in the shape of the local manor owner, William Mainwaring, who arrives at Ferndale to get acquainted with the neighbourhood and possibly make Ferndale his main residence. Unfortunately for Elizabeth, Mr Mainwaring brought a party with him, and most especially his best friend Robert Denning, the Marquess of Hetherington, who is obviously involved in whatever drove Elizabeth to leave the high society six years earlier and seek employment.

The first half of the book is purely fascinating. Balogh keeps dropping hints at what happened between Elizabeth and Robert to make them both so cold and cruel to each other. Each of their encounters makes a chill course down the reader's spine, and the hatred between them is extremely well portrayed. Besides, William Mainwaring's behaviour towards the heroine opposes a nice contrast to Robert's iciness.

However, after the high peak of the story, which appears about halfway through (a stunning and very clever revelation that was actually very unexpected, but made a lot of sense), I felt that the plot was dragging on. Until the big revelation, I had been thoroughly enthralled, and the thirty pages immediately following it were probably the best part of the novel. However, what came afterwards seemed to me like unnecessary means to keep the main characters apart. I became increasingly frustrated with Elizabeth' stubbornness not to *talk* with Hetherington, when it was so obvious that talking would solve a lot of things.

The writing style, focused entirely on Elizabeth' point of view, should have been a great strength of the book; alas, it enhances even more obviously the main weakness behind the premise: since as a reader, I didn't have any more knowledge about what had happened than Elizabeth let out, I couldn't blame my frustration with her blindness on extra knowledge I might have of Hetherington's character.

There was still some interesting character development afterwards, but the main premise behind the whole novel seemed entirely too predictable to me. I read on with the hope that Mary Balogh would surprise me in the very last chapter, but unfortunately she didn't, and so the denouement was a bit of a disappointment.

After reading a series of outstanding Balogh romances over the past few weeks, I was expecting a lot from this one - maybe too much. The characters are attaching, which makes up for my frustration, yet I couldn't help but feel that the novel could have been solved in a much more satisfying (albeit still predictable) manner if it had ended seventy pages sooner.

I have enjoyed reading many of Hansen's books, and this was a fun one to read. I feel that I can really get involved in the story lines and characters. This is a love story, but also full of drama. There was just enough of both to keep your attention and finish it quickly. After I finished it I was looking for another one of her books that I hadn't read yet.

The road not taken. The one that got away. Serendipitous meetings. These are the stories that populate How We Met, an anthology of "chance encounters and other true love stories of real-life couples." They are stories of enduring affection that transcends time and distance until the couples eventually find their way to one another through happenstance or dogged perseverance. That fork in the road eventually circles back to the right path. The one that got away is found again. Romance blooms at stoplights. Sometimes it takes a week or a month, sometimes years--even decades--for the lovers to find each other and acknowledge their bond. In the end, they all live happily ever after--or at least that's what we hope: nearly all the stories conclude with marriage.

Some of the 32 stories in this collection are contemporary, with young adults meeting in modern settings such as through the singles ads; others date to World War II or start there and finish in the 1990s with long-lost lovers finding each other against all odds. It would be easy to prejudge How We Met as schmaltz, but once you dive in, you are assured of finding a story that reminds you of your own history (perhaps of the moment you met your spouse) or that rekindles memories of a special someone from the past. Single readers will be reassured that they, too, may one day meet their soul mate.

The writing style is journalistic and unembroidered with the intemperate gush of many love stories. This restraint allows the narratives to speak for themselves, and as examples of true love between regular folks, they need no embellishment. --Brenda Pittsley

Book Description

Every day, in every corner of the world, chance encounters bring together people who are meant for each other. As anyone who has ever fallen in love knows, few moments in life are more magical. How We Met is a treasury of these life-changing encounters. Real couples young and old share heartwarming stories of being brought together by seemingly blind happenstance—a missed appointment, a wrong turn, an unexpected phone call. The stories range from the profoundly simple to the simply miraculous—you'll read of people who discovered their loved ones by turning a corner, and others who had to traverse great distance and time. You'll be charmed by the awkward fumblings of first meetings, and you'll be moved by the undying pursuit of lasting love.

How We Met will remind you that every couple's story is special—including yours.

4 out of 5 stars Whether in a relationship or still looking, read this book........1999-02-25

I not only read Miriam's book, I read it again. The introduction is critical as it prepares you for the elequent journey into truly enlightening stories of how people met and fell in love. What makes this book unique is the innocent and sometimes strange circumstances surrounding the clandestined lovers within its binding. Miriam covers everything from the first kiss to second chances for those who were either to inmature to notice or to stubborn to care. Each story is laced with destiny; and lends credence to the possibility of a soul mate for everyone. At first glance it is just a compilation of "How We Met" stories. On a second it touches you on a deeper more spiritual level, freeing the you (the reader) from the ideals and standards we set for "the perfect mate". For those of you in relationships you won't finish this book without seeing yourself in at least one of the characters. For those of you single and still searching, "How We Met" holds out hope, inspiration and faith in what is destined for you. Soul mates do exist!

So why only four stars?? You can tell by the introduction, these stories affected Miriam in a spiritual sense; so much so that she speaks to the issues of spirtuality, destiny and soul mates as they relate to love. It would have been great had she shared some of this insight at the end of each story. Then again, maybe it is better left to the reader to draw his or her own conclusions. You be the judge!

5 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air - soulmates do exist!!!.......1999-02-22

Miriam Sokol's book of real life stories was a joy to read. I didn't want to put it down. In a world where sometimes there is so much sadness in relationships, it was so refreshing to realize that meeting our soulmates is possible if we allow ourselves to realize that a higher power is guiding us.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully written, engaging stories with depth.......1999-02-02

The stories in How we met are wonderfully written, engaging and with a surprising amount of depth. I also liked the insights that begin each chapter, which served as a guide for the stories. It's a fun and interesting read for just about everyone. I even had my teenage daughter read it!

5 out of 5 stars INSPIRING OF HOPE FOR ALL SINGLES.......1999-01-29

I was touched by Miriam Sokol's book and after several tissues I realized I was filled with hope. As an single woman, who is old enough to have alot of her own stories, I became more convinced of the power of spiritual forces in guiding a match. Just when you think you may never meet your soulmate, Ms. Sokol's book illuminates the possibilities that he may materialize any day now. Ms. Sokol understands that the greatest matchmaker of all times, is "The One whose hand is in every match." I highly recommend this lovely book.

5 out of 5 stars a banquet that fed my heart and soul.......1999-01-20

Remember those old films where there is a tent in the desert, looks small from the outside, but its a magnificent palace on the inside? My state of mind changed as I read this book. I wasn't just reading. I was filling my heart and soul with possibility, with reality, with love. The feeling of hope, trust, excitement has lasted for days. True love is alive and well.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Six stars..........2007-06-27

Three wonderful tales of life, love and the Lord by three very gifted authors. A wonderful anthology!

"Will and a Way" by Elizabeth White is an uplifting story about God working out His plan perfectly in His own time. Will and Zoe knew each other in college. He was dating her roommate. Now, they've bumped into each other in the airport and realized that they have a lot - including a love of the Lord - in common. Can they face their pasts and fears to have a happily ever after? Although an enjoyable story, it ended rather abruptly, almost leaving the reader with the feeling that there was more to come...

Kathleen Fuller's "Encore, Encore" is the thoroughly satisfying tale of Annika, a violinist and concertmaster in her orchestra. She's worked hard for her position and the solo she will perform during her last concert tour with the institute. When their conductor is severely injured, Annika's unpleasant "ex" assumes the baton and promptly replaces Annika as concertmaster with Josef, a famous virtuoso, and takes away the solo she's worked so hard for. In spite of this, Annika and Josef are drawn to each other. So, when Annika's "ex" threatens to send her home if Josef continues to see her outside of the concert hall, their growing love is threatened.

"Measure of a Man" by Susan May Warren is the story of Calli, a missionary to Russia, and her former beau, Peter. They pledged their lives to Christ and missionary work together, but pressure from his father led Peter to law school and out of Calli's life. Now, a lumber deal for his father's company has brought Peter to Russia. But the bigger picture shows that, although Peter may have lost track of God, the Lord had not forgotten Peter. The opening elevator scene in this book was awesome! I love Susan May Warren. She always touches my heart and entertains me.

2 out of 5 stars Misses the Mark.......2004-03-31

A collection of three novellas by three different authors - perhaps to be enjoyed by those who most like their Christianity in a nice neat little box? Somewhat silly and unrealistic but with some interesting details, all with strong evangelical fundamentalist undertones and characters who are mighty quick to don their cloak of righteousness. Misunderstandings and bickering abound, and the "feminine love interest" in two of the stories actually strikes out physically. I struggled with the rigidity and hostility. There is little gentleness or grace - but rather there IS a high level of spoon-fed "belief."

So, perhaps I should just avoid "Christian Romance" entirely? Well, if there had been any hint on the cover of this collection, I might have done exactly that. But I did bother to read these (bother being the key word?) and would instead refer the gentle reader to the fiction of Frederick Buechner, Jan Karon and Philip Gulley. For me this collection missed the mark.

5 out of 5 stars THREE HEARTFELT NOVELLAS BRING US PEACE AND LOVE.......2003-10-25

These three accomplished authors tell a tale each of how God can indeed bring about true love all through hardship and in the case of Elizabeth White and Susan May Warren laughter. Kathleen Fuller's story is one of intrigue and deep emotion. I recommend this book highly to anyone who seeks a soul-searching and warm love story.

        5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for MEASURE OF A MAN!.......2003-02-21

Susan Warren's offering, Measure of a Man, is wonderful! Endearing characters and a page-turning plot, romance at its very best and a precious message neatly woven in. I can't wait to read more by this incredible new author!

4 out of 5 stars What Christian Fiction Should Be.......2003-02-08

I really enjoyed this book. The stories are easy to read and enjoyable. My favourite story by far was the last one, "Measure of a Man" by Susan May Warren. This story is, in my opinion, exactly what Christian fiction should be. This is no small thing since it has been my experience that all too often Christian fiction lacks so much of what is supposed to make it Christian fiction. Measure of a Man is absolutely chock-full of truth. It isn't just a story about the lives of people who happen to be Christians and say little one-line prayers now and then, it's a story that teaches the reader more about God's character and causes them to grow, something that even the first two stories, though enjoyable, fail to do in my opinion. It's a story that is so full of truth and encouragement that it can minister even to mature Christians, as well as non-Christians or seekers. The author does a great job of making the story line believable and the development of the romance realistic in a very short amount of time. This again is no small feat as it is something many romance writers (both Christian and non-Christian) seem to have trouble achieving. The story line is high paced and intriguing, and has elements of suspense, mystery, tragedy, and comedy as well as romance. One of the things that really set this story apart from others is the unique writing technique employed by the author. The story outlines both the heroines' and the heros' perspective on certain issues, giving unique insight into the differences between the way men and women view the same things. This serves to remind women readers that men see us and our beauty very differently than we see ourselves. I find this technique to be very insightful, healthy and encouraging for women, especially in today's society. In addition to everything else, this story is very well written, something which is unfortunately not always the case with Christian fiction. In my opinion, this story is a contender with any non-Christian fiction of its class, and I definitely recommend it. And the really great thing is that apparently this story is the first published work by Susan May Warren, something that means any future works by her are sure to only get better!

        Book Description

Here is a fresh look at the traditional principles of karate, and especially a concept fundamental to all martial arts—that of the "empty self." It asks readers to let go of preconceptions of karate as merely a system of self-defense techniques and to realize the true intentions of this remarkable martial art.

        5 out of 5 stars Deeply insightful..........2007-08-21

As a 45-year karate practitioner and instructor, I was drawn to Dr. Webster-Doyle's teachings, and sensed his novel methods could enhance the maturity of my students. His enlightened strategy for comprehending the nature of human aggression provides an underpinning for developing tactical skills in voiding it. But, there was far more, being drawn from the author's extensive education and practice in psychology, traditional karate, and education.

His, "Karate: The Art of Empty Self," proved deeply insightful for anyone ready for Dr. Webster-Doyle's revolutionary digression from violence as a solution to violence ... who realize it only begets more violence. Combined with dedicated dojo training, it provides far greater rewards than mere physical training in fighting. Even for those untrained in self-defense, it can thwart aggression.

I acquired more of his works, including Why Is 'Everybody Always Picking On Me? One Encounter, One Chance to name a few. They provided study and workshop teaching in effective, bloodless tactics for stopping physical violence. Throughout, they shared a strategy for overcoming the internal battles with one's own ego ... the source of all violence, from interpersonal to international.

Like all visionaries, Dr. Webster-Doyle has detractors. Their main criticism is that by not heroically jumping into physical engagement, one is cowardly ... a wimp promoting feminism. Granted, their solution is one way to meet aggression ... but with no comprehension of the potential aftermath: hospital or morgue, court or prison. Dr. Webster-Doyle's far more effective approach substitutes cool, rational thinking for unthinking physical resistance ... until an attack in imminent. Then, effective self-defense training equips the student to back up what he says. This is what karate and other arts are supposed to be all about. "In Okinawa, one never strikes the first blow," is a maxim among the island's karate masters. The creator of our style stated it was important that he maintain a soft, almost feminine character, to avoid driving new students away. He also said the secret is to be able to be hard or soft, as the situation demands.

To the criticism that Dr. Webster-Doyle lacks valid scholastic credentials from an accredited school is incorrect, as the Web site they mention states his school was accredited when he graduated. Regardless, if he came down from the planet Mongo, his teachings would be equally valuable for those who have seen enough aggression given and taken in the world, seen it doesn't work, and know there is a better way.

        4 out of 5 stars Karate as a Therapy.......2001-11-14

Those who want to learn how to defeat the most powerful enemy must learn this book. That enemy is the one we construct inside us, that enemy is the enemy within our head, inside our spirits. I know is not a question of win or loose, of defeating or be defeated, but the author must know, if he reads this review, that he is constructing an idea about karate, a discourse of what it is, or supposse to be, so, he , by writing it enter in the same conflict. Can we escape from that? I think not. But we can manage the conflict of ideas in many ways, and one excellent theory is given by Dr. Webster-Doyle.
I think in a more sicoanalistic way. I believe that the fragmentation of the sychic structure is real and not a mere ideal rupture of the self. But, from a sychoanalitical point of view, been "empty" is to recognice the Void. This is a conversation I wish to have with Dr. Webster-Doyle.
But in terms of the book, if you only want the superficial aproach of martial arts, that of just punching and kicking, grapling and striking, well, don't read this book, but if you are serius in understanding combat, conflict and the agressiveness of humans, I dare you to read this pages. And I am convinced that if you don't like the book because it tries to end conflict, may be you need a sychologist 'cause you are so violent that you cannot deal with peace.
Any one who read about Gichin Funakoshi will notice that karate is a discourse of understanding the violent capacity of humans, and by that, by knowing combat, we can develope peace. I think that is the intention of the author of One Encounter, One Chance.
The concept of using karate to develope a Therapy against violence is excellent. Karate can become a language, just as Jackes Lacan says about langauge and the structure of the human sychis, and by that, by the sign and codes of the Kata, of the form, the subject can take out agression and deal with it in the insatisfaction of the desire of death. The author sees it in terms of a centered self, an individual who is not fragmented, but in terms of a conflict structure, as the sychoanalisys says, the therapy have good potential.
As you can see, I do not agree with the theory of the self as Dr. Webster-Doyle expose it, but in terms of the potential of karate as an analysis technique, this book had openned a wonderful door for discussion and debate, and a dialogue torward peace.
One more thin, contrary to Dr. Webster-Doyle, I think that Musachi Miyamoto's Book of Five Rings, especially the book of the Void, deals with the Sychic Void that every human have. Deny the Void, even from the point of view of Musachi miyamoto, is deny the human being itself.
