Beth Hensperger and Julie Kaufmann's The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook offers 250 timesaving, convenient, and healthy recipes for making everything from simple white rice to full-course meals. This cookbook proves the rice cooker--which tends to have a bad rap as a never-opened or oft-neglected wedding gift--can be surprisingly versatile: not only does it prepare your rice, it can be used for every dinner course--salad, soup, vegetable, entree, and even dessert.
There is a complete buying and cooking guide for the many rice varieties, as well as other whole grains such as barley, millet, wheat berry, and quinoa. Many of the recipes provide convenient alternative cooking methods for traditional dishes like Italian risottos (the Italian Sausage Risotto is wonderful). Hensperger and Kaufmann show the rice cooker can also work miracles for hot breakfast cereals and porridges with such recipes as Hot Fruited Oatmeal. Delightful main courses include Steamed Ginger Salmon and Asparagus in Black Bean Sauce, and the meal is done almost exclusively within the rice cooker for simple preparation and cleanup. The dessert section has many ideas beyond the expected Old-Fashioned Rice Pudding--the Poached Pears with Grand Marnier Custard Sauce is one elegant and sophisticated example. Both authors of this cookbook are seasoned food writers and this combined effort gives tasty, easy, and healthy recipes that will motivate you to use what has been, until now, an underutilized appliance. --Teresa Simanton

The Ultimate Rice cooker Cookbook.......2007-10-10
This cook book has extensive histories of rice and other suggested grains; good for the historian, bit much for this cook! Recipes, once you get to them are fine. I'd ordered another rice-cooker book at the same time, one aimed at students -- which I found to be handier and easier to use.
Very good as a simple reading.......2007-08-12
Even if you don't buy this book as a companion to a fuzzy logic(high recommended), it's still a really good read about rice. The only thing that is a let down about the book is the detail information, the print type, and occasionally the layout. Also, the biggest thing that is frustrating me with the book is trying to figure out how to measure liquids. They give conflicting,IMO, advice on how to measure out liquids and go on to say that "...always specify the difference." I didn't find that to be clear or the case in some instances. (If anyone can clear that up for me, that would be great.)
Otherwise I still would recommend this book, and will probably buy 2 for family members for Christmas. It's worthy of being on a kitchen bookshelf.
Great cookbook........2007-05-09
This cookbook has a big variety of recipes to try in your rice cooker! If you have recently bought a rice cooker or had one for a while & want to learn more ways to use it, then get this book! I must add a lot of the recipes will require a rice cook with fuzzy logic (or the more advanced/expensive cookers.)
Rice CookerRecipes.......2007-04-10
I am new to rice cookers and I found this book to be very helpful... There are so many recipes that everyone will find lots to choose from... I refer to this book every time I use my cooker... Everyone who has a rice cooker should have this book.
Best rice cooker companion.......2007-04-06
I just bought a fuzzy logic rice cooker // this book is the best // the recipes are great

Customer Reviews:
Excelent.......2007-07-03
This book is the ideal one to people that have to understand the principles of project management, but with focus in IT. Even though it can not give you a complete overview of project management principles (for this, you have to use PMBOK, from PMI), here you can find all the information necessary to manage IT projects.
Where Are the Files?.......2007-03-27
I am currently on Chapter 8 of this twelve chapter book. So far, it's a clearly written review of IT Project Management with usefull apendices for connecting the subject matter to Comp TIA Project+ certification. The bad news is the publishers and author did not review the enclosed CD to assure that all of the files the author refers to are on the CD. So far, I have found four missing files, two of them are needed for completing review exercises at the end of chapters. I searched both McGraw Hill/Osborne and Joseph Philip's websites for the missing files, but could not find them.
The text itself is a good selection for anyone studying for the Project+ certificate, but I cannot give an above average rating to a project management product that does not deliver all promised deliverables.
IT Project Management.......2006-03-10
gives numerous specific tasks for you to manage.......2006-03-04
This text is for the technical manager. It breaks down your project management duties into narrower, more specific tasks. Like putting together a project team. Which involves determining what tasks need to be tackled, and finding those people qualified to do so.
Project planning is shown using various graphical approaches like network diagrams. These and other types of graphs are vital in letting you plan a schedule and then measure adherence to it.
Quality is also prominently discussed. There are suggestions on how to measure these in the deliverables. Unlike manufacturing, this can be difficult. The book only touches upon the complexities here. You should look elsewhere for a more thorough analysis of quality measurement.
Very Good Exam Prep and Fundamental PM knowledge.......2005-10-12
I used this text and the SelfTest Test Engine (PKO-002) - I took the Project+ exam today (10/11/2005) and passed - No Problem! I'm definetly adding this book to my reference shelf. Thanks for an excellent treatment of the subject matter and subject exam Mr. Phillips.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding and detailed analysis of plot structures.......2007-10-13
I'm still working my way through this book, but so far I'm very impressed. I've learned a great deal about the structure of plots and scenes. The author provides very practical and easily understood guidelines. Highly recommended.
For those who seek clarity, you may begin here........2007-10-08
Not having the luxury of an MFA, I struggled to create my interpretation of a marketable novel until I finally faced the truth. I didn't know what I was doing.
"Okay then," I thought, "what exactly am I lacking?"
I attended a very good workshop which revealed what I had already come to suspect. My writing had too much imagery and not enough, plot or structure. I went looking for a solution and, would you believe it, I found there was a book written just for me.
"Plot & Structure, Techniques and exercises for crafting a plot that grips readers from start to finish," by James Scott Bell was the first step on my road to literary recovery. I followed this wonderful little book with another, "Techniques of the Selling Writer" by Dwight V. Swain. The two volumes go together well, in my opinion, complimenting one another on a common list of topics.
I'd recommend them both as well as the rest of the "Write Great Fiction" series from Writer's Digest Books. You might also consider, "Self-Editing for Fiction Writers, How to Edit Yourself Into Print" by Renni Brown and Dave King.
I needed to find better footing, to bone up on fiction basics. These books plus a subscription to "the Writer" magazine have been my school. If you desire a better grasp of the basics, you might want to start here.
Michael, doing better, in Seattle.
The first book that you must read.......2007-10-03
This is a good introductory book, and works for various types of media, like cinema (screenplay) and comics.
It's a simple and objective book, direct to the point. It's interesting to note that other books like Screenplay by Syd Field and Story by Robert Mckee will be more valuable after you read Plot & Structure, because now you will have a better understanding of story construction.
It's not a revolutionary book, but it's very solid and highly practical.
Recommended.
An Invaluable Writing Tool.......2007-09-08
This book is a must have for every fiction writer, non-fiction writer who wants to try fiction, or for someone who dreams of becoming an author.
I write my books intuitively. Then my first publisher suggested I start teaching creative writing workshops.
"Great idea," I told her.
But deep inside I was scared silly. How the heck would I go about teaching something that I was doing intuitively?
Thank goodness for this book! Now I can see and understand the process that I've been using as a writer. This is not only helping me improve my skills, it's also helping me have a lot more fun writing my next book.
Great book!.......2007-09-02
This is the only how-to book on writing that I have actually finished! I found it to be very entertaining, and SO useful! I am a very unorganized plotter; I just write the story. He actually had some tips for writers just like me that didn't entail "write an outline or else"!
I would definitely recommend this book!

conceptos interesantes.......2007-09-02
A basic primer on differences between digital and print mediums.......2006-09-08
DV Filmmaking From Start To Finish by Ian David Aronson's will reach both amateur and professional digital video users with a basic primer on differences between digital and print mediums. Familiarity with Final Cut Pro or Adobe After Effects, the two programs used here, will aid in understanding DV applications in either PC or Mac formats, while the author's background as a teacher of digital media lends a logical progression to his tips and practical applied examples.
A strong reference for digital film making process.......2006-08-13
DV Filmmaking for Ian David Aronson gives you in 18 chapter a coverage for the production, post-production and distribution process of the digital film making.
The book starts with basic digital Cinematography principles. It covers he process stages such as composing shoots, lighting, shooting, working with cameras, audio, still images and titles.
This book doesn't give you a specific software tutorial, but if you are working learning with video production and video editing program, you should get a background about the whole film making process. However, this book gives you a strong background in this industry. I find this book useful for animators, multimedia designers and creative directors.
The two appendixes in the end of the book gives you a tips about getting your work in various media and selling your products.
Great Resource, Great Job!.......2006-07-04
DV Filmmaking- Start To Finish has been a great resource for my own first feature film Hot Rod Girls Save The World.
I had checked DV Filmmaking out from the Seattle Public Library last week, now I must buy one for my personal library. I find myself refering to it again and again.
Great Job!

A great book that gave me the answer !.......2006-06-22
A great book!
"DV Filmmaking" is an excellent book for anyone who wants to go beyond the basics of digital video.
I recently completed a video-based project for my M.A. thesis, and used this book as my guide. Each time I encountered problems, this book gave me the answer. For example, after I shot, I noticed some severe lighting trouble in a few very important interviews and I started to panic because I didn't have enough time to shoot them again. I had more than three hours of interview footage that looked pale, shady, and just plain depressing. Frustrated, I opened this book. The solution was there, in the section on color correction!!! I could fix my footage so that it was not only usable but looked really good.
I also relied on the section on compression and encoding to make
professional quality video for the Internet (something I would not have been able to do otherwise).
This book covers all aspects of the video production process, from planning, to production, and distribution. I'd like to
recommend it to anyone who is new to the world of digital video, as well as people who want to take their work beyond the level of
point-and-shoot to make something really creative.

Digital Restoration from Start to Finish.......2007-08-23
I found the book excellent in its scope of coverage and detailed lessons/projects. Whether you are a professional or amatuer photographer or photo restorer this book should be in your digital editing library. The book is well laid out and takes you from relatively simple to complex restoration challenges. The author includes information on various editing software used in restoration as well as reference to books by other authors in the field. The man knows digital restoration and he has the ability to pass his knowledge on to the reader in an informative, detailed manner.
Book has photos that might be offensive to some.......2007-06-30
While I find this book a generally excellent resource book, I was surprised to find the inclusion of pictures of two women sitting together, one is naked. See pages 62,63,337,338.
Outstanding!.......2007-04-22
As moderator of a photographic web site's discussion forum, I often find myself having to answer questions about scanning and restoring photographs. The nature of a web discussion forum often prevents and in-depth reply to individual questions, and we also find that many of the questions have been asked and answered before, albeit in a slightly different way.
What a relief & pleasure to discover this book - it covers almost all aspects of the scanning and archiving process, with many specific how-tos covering the problems experienced by photo-restorers.
Ctein's vast experience and knowledge are well demonstrated in this readable and practical book, which I'd suggest is a must have for anyone contemplating scanning and restoring a photographic archive.
Pre-requisites are a working knowledge of your image editor and scanner software, and an awareness of the principles of colour management - without these the job is impossible, anyway.
A couple of minor criticisms
- the book is very much photoshop based, and although the book says that other image editors (such as picture window pro) can be used, the photoshop bias may be off-putting for someone trying to use an alternative editor.
- each example photograph crops up in many places throughout the book, making it occasinally difficult to follow, and although there's a chapter specifically devoted to end to nd restorations of the sample photos, some may find that the info related to a specific picture is a little too widely spread.
Overall an excellent book, easy to read and providing real insight and practical methods of photographic restoration and archiving. Essential reading!
for the amateur but profesional at heart.......2007-04-11
excellent book, in you have the basic figured out, this book will take it from there with real life scenarios to fix.
Restoration Review.......2007-04-01
For anyone involved with the digital restoration of photos both old and new, this handbook is an essential resourse. The information regading the corrections done at the scanning stage have already improved my results measurably.
Another book "Photoshop Restoration & Retouching" By Katrin Eismann is well worth investing in also.I purchased this book from Amazon with its sister volume 'Photoshop Masking & Compositing" by the same authour and now feel I have a library of real worth for the work I do. Incidently Ctein recommends Katrin Eismanns books also.
I admire the way both these experts have made their knowledge available.
Professionals are not always so free with secrets and experience which can help newcomers to gain skills. Thank you!
Book Description
This book will help you reach a decision about any conclusion reported in a research article. You will walk through articles with the author, noting the rationale for a study, its purpose, the soundness of the design, the appropriateness of the analysis of data and interpretations of the results, the conclusion reached, and whether it is justified. Types of studies range from descriptive (e.g., case studies, surveys, correlation) to analytical (e.g., experiments involving two or more matched or randomly formed groups). Types of analyses range from simple t tests to multivariate (e.g., analyses of variance, factor analysis, multiple
regression). This new edition also includes things to look for in the article, in the form of readily accessible lists of factors in the design and statistical analyses that are critical for determining appropriateness of conclusions. There is greater coverage of designs and analyses of data, more up-to date articles, more articles to critique without help (but answers provided), and a glossary of all technical, relevant terms.
Features and Benefits:
This edition, like the first, includes flawed and well-designed studies, most of which were published in 1999 or 2000. All chapters but one
include two articles: one is critiqued by the author, while the other is critiqued by the reader. The answers are provided in a separate section. Each chapter starts with a detailed description of the rationale for the design, the most appropriate statistical analysis for the design along with assumptions underlying the analysis, and a boxed list of critical design and analysis factors to guide any critique. A list of supplementary readings is at the end of the chapter, and a comprehensive glossary is at the end of the book.
Book Description
From the most basic solutions to advanced, energy-saving projects, no book covers home insulation and weatherization like this one. With 35 drawings and 350 color photos guiding them, homeowners will learn how best to keep their homes warm in winter, cool in summer, and weather-tight all year long.
Customer Reviews:
This book teaches you the easy way to make those energy efficiency improvements.......2007-10-19
Sealing up your home envelope (the border between conditioned and unconditioned spaces) and proper insulation are the most cost effective improvements you can make in a home to significantly reduce your energy consumption while improving comfort. This book is a guide based on a professionals experiences, teaches the best ways to make those improvements, and educates you on why and how. Though it's scope is constrained around insulating and weatherizing, it's the best reference in that space I've found.
Excellent book and worth every peeny.......2007-10-03
I purchased an old wooden home built about 1890 a few years ago. Other that some poorly installed blown fiberglass there wasn't any insulation in the house. I immediately started getting every book on insulating and energy efficiency that I could out of the library. This book was one of the last ones I read but it's the only one that I went back and purchased. It may not have step by step guides but what it does do is teach you about the basic mechanics of how your house works, which to me is more important than any step by step guide. It is not short on very specific advice either and also includes an excellent resource guide to purchase many of the things you will need to do the job. I have constantly referred back to this book as we slowly turn this leaky old home into a tight, energy efficient and more comfortable home.
This book is for anyone looking to improve the energy efficiency of their home, even if you are just in the design stage. Many more subjects than just insulation are covered.
Beginner to Expert, Something for all........2007-06-12
I am a firm believer in the KISS method of doing things. (Keep It Simple Stupid") Every step is covered in this book so that anyone can learn from it. The "Build Like A Pro" series of books are all laid out like this one. The "Expert Tips" are great. They show you short cuts to help you do the jobs right, but in less time. This is stuff you only learn by doing the job everyday. They are trade secrets.
Worth every penny ..........2007-02-21
This is the first book that I've ever been prompted to write an online review of. I'm having a new home built in the spring, and this book has given me the information needed to make sure my contractor is doing the job correctly. If you're inclined to do the work yourself, this is also the book you want. If you implement just one of the suggestions, you'll save many times the cost of the book.
Fantastic reference.......2007-01-19
I bought a 50 year old house 6 months ago and I've already checked this book out of the local library four times. Plenty of sections I keep coming back to. Excellent plan of attack for sealing, insulating, and then (when you need to) properly ventalating an older house. And the HVAC sections have been a great reference when were were shopping for central AC (which we just put in) and a new boiler (the next big project). I've raved about this book to so many other homeowners with high utility bills.
I had an energy audit done a litte while ago, and two guys came out to the house. One was the trainer, the other had just gone through the certification program. Between this book and the building sciences website, I felt like I knew more than the assitant. And that definitely helped me get more out of the audit, knowing what questions to ask and understanding the auditor's recommendations.

Complete basic Woodturning.......2007-08-27
This is a grat book with good pictures and texet. It is easy to read and understand.
An excellent and complete beginner's turning guide.......2007-03-27
This book is an excellent reference for the new woodturner. It makes no assumptions, and starts from the VERY beginning, so some may skip some of the beginning sections. However, the book is organized to guide you through the process, and includes projects to use your newly found skills. The book reads very well, and will give you the fundamental knowledge you need to get started. It's also filled with excellent photos to help clarify the text. I would highly recommend this book to other beginners (in fact, I already have).
Great starter book.......2007-01-15
I gave this book along with a lathe as a Christmas gift to my Father-in-law. He has a machinist background, but had not used a wood lathe before. This book offered a great starting point for him. I read the book also and found it to be very good.

this book helped me a lot and found it very interesting and gave me
a lot of ideas.
Good for beginers.......2006-03-15

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive guide to the whole project........2007-04-02
I just read the two previous reviews, and felt compelled to write my own. I've had this book a few months and haven't yet redone the kitchen. I worked in construction for many years, but never did kitchen design, though I did do some installations. I re-did the kitchen in our previous home, but didn't change the layout too much.
I'd hate for people to bypass this book based on the prior bad review. If you could only have one book to guide you through your whole project, this one would be hard to beat. It walks you through the process step-by-step, and warns you of potential issues like "hidden systems" - heat, electrical, etc. which can save you loads of aggravation.
I don't have a problem with a significant part of the book being dedicated to design. If you gloss over the design step and move right into construction and end up with a kitchen that doesn't quite fit your cooking/life style, what have you got?? You can get a design at a store that sells cabinets, and guaranteed you'll get a design that fully utilizes their pre-built, one size fits most cabinets they're looking to sell. Maybe that works for you, but maybe not. I find the design part the most challenging. If you don't want to get into it, think about finding a kitchen designer. You may get lucky at IKEA or another big box store. Personally, I have to know I'm getting what works best for us before the money starts going out.
As for needing more information on construction, I don't see it. I think this book has most of what you need. If you didn't quite get something, like installing tile, then there are many places to do research. To me, it's easier to find a description on how to build a cabinet than it is to get a good design. I feel that this book both covers design and takes a thorough look at construction. I have a few books on design alone, and would suggest that approach if you're serious about doing it yourself.
I've always been happy with Taunton Press books. [...]
Disappointing.......2007-03-12
After using the basement book in this series to finish my basement, I was excited to obtain the kitchen version to help me redo my kitchen. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. The book spends 50-60% of the time talking about how to plan your kitchen. This is important but anywhere you get cabinets from these days will help you with this. Even Ikea has free online software. He spends all this time talking about the software you'd need to plan your kitchen but little time spent on how to do the installation.... Blah
Finally, on page 113 (out of 190 pages) he starts talking about demolition of your old kitchen and on page 163-173, he discusses cabinet installation. That's it. Not nearly as in-depth as other books in this series. Save your money.
