If you own only one anthology of classic science fiction, it should be The Science Fiction Hall of Fame: Volume One, 1929-1964. Selected by a vote of the membership of the Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA), these 26 reprints represent the best, most important, and most influential stories and authors in the field. The contributors are a Who's Who of classic SF, with every Golden Age giant included: Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, John W. Campbell, Robert A. Heinlein, Fritz Leiber, Cordwainer Smith, Theodore Sturgeon, and Roger Zelazny. Other contributors are less well known outside the core SF readership. Three of the contributors are famous for one story--but what stories!--Tom Godwin's pivotal hard-SF tale, "The Cold Equations"; Jerome Bixby's "It's a Good Life" (made only more infamous by the chilling Twilight Zone adaptation); and Daniel Keyes's "Flowers for Algernon" (brought to mainstream fame by the movie adaptation, Charly).

The collection has some minor but frustrating flaws. There are no contributor biographies, which is bad enough when the author is a giant; but it's especially sad for contributors who have become unjustly obscure. Each story's original publication date is in small print at the bottom of the first page. And neither this fine print nor the copyright page identifies the magazines in which the stories first appeared.

Prefaced by editor Robert Silverberg's introduction, which describes SFWA and details the selection process, The Science Fiction Hall of Fame: Volume One, 1929-1964 is a wonderful book for the budding SF fan. Experienced SF readers should compare the table of contents to their library before making a purchase decision. Fans who contemplate giving this book to non-SF readers should bear in mind that, while several of the collected stories can measure up to classic mainstream literary stories, the less literarily-acceptable stories are weighted toward the front of the collection; adult mainstream-literature fans may not get very far into The Science Fiction Hall of Fame: Volume One, 1929-1964. --Cynthia Ward

The definitive collection of the best in science fiction stories between 1929-1964.This book contains twenty-six of the greatest science fiction stories ever written. They represent the considered verdict of the Science Fiction Writers of America, those who have shaped the genre and who know, more intimately than anyone else, what the criteria for excellence in the field should be. "Country of the Kind," by Damon Knight, is a frightening portrayal of biological mutation. "Nightfall," by Isaac Asimov, one of the greatest stories in the science fiction field, is the story of a planet where the sun sets only once every millennium and is a chilling study in mass psychology.Originally published in 1970 to honor those writers and their stories that had come before the institution of the Nebula Awards, The Science Fiction Hall Of Fame, Volume One, was the book that introduced tens of thousands of young readers to the wonders of science fiction. I've purchased this book in paperback and hardcover many times over because I keep giving copies away. This is an indespensible introduction to the art of writing short fiction, sci-fi style. Character studies, logic puzzles, future societies, deaths of civilizations, it's all in here. Emphatically recommended.

My Mom had a dog eared paperback copy of this book from her college days. I remember reading and rereading it as a young boy. It, more than any other book, ignited my passion for science fiction. Every story is a winner and each serves as a jumping off point to explore the author's further work. Of all the SF anthologies, this is the best and is an essential part of any SF fan's library.

Most of the stories in hear are fantastic. The intro also includes a listing of the 20 best voted scifi short stories, which I found myself refering to to see if I could relate to the 'experts' opinions. There are a few stinkers in the bunch, which I'm sure is inevitable, but probably not as many as you'd find as in other collections.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview for FBI Special Agent Applicants.......2007-01-02

I've read several books on the FBI Special Agent career path, and this book is the most informative overall collection of data available. This is the only book I've read that details the specifics of an agent's career path and what to expect during various levels of an agent's career. It also provides excellent preparation for the two Phases of the agent application process, and I highly recommend this book to any person who is about to embark on the lengthy Special Agent application process.

It's a 'must' guide to the complex world of the FBI career.

This book was awesome! It was extremely informative and answered all of my questions. It was a bit of a techincal read but it contains everything from a to z about the fbi.

5 out of 5 stars Educational reading.......2006-10-25

I am a retired FBI Special Agent and find this book very enlightning and also entertaining. It reminds me of my FBI experiences, from Training School through my work in the different Field Offices. If I were a young person interested in Law Enforcement as a career, I would most certainly find this book as a "must" read.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect guide for anyone interested in the FBI.......2006-09-16

I was interested in being a special agent with the FBI before reading this book and after reading it I am even more interested. This book was very good at explaining the application process for the FBI. Also gave info on a wide range of topics from the history of the FBI, to what an agent does. Anyone interested in a career as a special agent should read this for guidance and valuable insight on this career. It was very helpful to me and can help you out as well.

Book Description

The Wizard Lord’s duty is to keep the world in its delicate balance. He must govern lightly to protect his domain from power-hungry interlopers, such as certain wizards who previously fought to rule the world…But if the Wizard Lord himself strays from the way of the just, then it is up to the Chosen to intercede.

The Chosen ones are the Leader, the Seer, the Swordsman, the Beauty, the Thief, the Scholar, the Archer, and the Speaker. Each are magically-infused mortal individuals who, for the term of their service, have only one function--to be available to remove an errant Wizard Lord, whether by persuasion or by stronger means.

Breaker, a young man of ambition, has taken the mantle of Swordsman from its former bearer who wished to retire. Never did he realize that he would be called to duty so quickly, or that the balance of power in his world would be so precarious.

He had a duty to perform. A world to save.

So why does he still have doubts…not just about himself, but about the entire balance of power?

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Decent plot, GREAT characters!.......2007-09-04

This book is about the characters, and especially about the main character "Breaker" who starts out as a farmer lout. You may not understand this character if you prefer books where the hero is always fast, smart, and good-looking -- Breaker is not. In fact, you probably will see where the plot is going well before Breaker does, but that's not the point. The point is to follow this character.

I picked this up because it's been a while since I read any Sword-and-Sorcery, and I was in for a long flight. It certainly fit that bill, in an interesting and, to me, very pleasant way. I have the next in the series on hold at the library.

2 out of 5 stars Poor.......2007-05-22

I agree with all the other negative comments. The story and writing struck me as juvenile and boring.

2 out of 5 stars "Oh".......2007-05-20

Normally I wouldn't give a good effort so low a rating, and I do think this novel is a good effort. Regardless of that fact it has some staggering issues that really can't be ignored.

If you read the book you will become well aware of why I titled my review with a single word. The main character, the Swordsman (or whichever name the author refers to him as on any given page), is quite possibly the most obnoxious character I've ever looked through the eyes of. When he's not constantly reviewing the plot in his head or speculating on possibilities that go nowhere, he loves to blithely respond with the single word, "Oh." This grows more annoying as the book wears on and more noticeable every single time.

The other characters, though less annoying since they are not the main focus, have their own foibles. Any and all conversations and scenes involving the Thief, for example, are completely useless and might just as well have been subtracted from the book entirely. The ending somehow makes quite a bit of the book make sense but this should apply more to the plot than the characters' habits and conversations.

As I mentioned with the Thief's scenes, there are quite a few parts of the book that are simply worthless. My apologies to the author but filling the space in between important things with useless scenes where nothing happens doesn't improve a story. The plot does little enough to make me care in the first place but wedge in a couple of chapters where absolutely nothing happens and I am more likely to put the book down permanently.

All the same, it was a good effort and I do plan to read the next book in the cycle (in the hopes that the characters are less annoying and the story is more exciting). The writing style is very informative and the "world" made enough sense to sustain its mythology throughout. The novel is by no means terrible but I have certainly read much better books lately. If the second book is indeed good then I would recommend this only on the basis that it covers past events.

But if Erren/Swordsman/Sword/Breaker/whatever his name is keeps saying "Oh" you can guarantee I will be writing a similar review to this one in the near future.

2 out of 5 stars straight forward plot, no surprises, rather dull.......2007-04-16

"Wizard Lord" has a simple fantasy plot: young man becomes a mystical defender of the relm, expecting this to be a cerimonial position. But their king (the Wizard Lord) is corrupt, and it's the young man's job (and the other defenders of the relm) to kill the Wizard Lord.

The back cover promises plot twists, but there aren't any. Watt-Evans has written some fast paced, fun novels; but this one is slow and borring: heavy on monologs, & light on action. I was quite surprised to see it published in hardback -- the average small press publication or print-on-demand fantasy is higher quality.

5 out of 5 stars Ok.......2007-01-26

This book is written with a well thought out plot. It is not like many of the other books being released as of late where the book just drags on. The book is also more tasteful than most newly written books where alot sex sex and more sex is supposed to make the book great. This book is a book of coming of age, in my opinion written in an old school fashion which should be greatly appreciated.

Book Description

Earl Woods, the father of young Eldrick "Tiger" Woods, was widely ridiculed in 1996 when, in an article anointing his son as Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year, he likened Tiger's potential impact to that of a messiah. This unseemly proclamation appeared to embody all the worst elements of the dreaded sports-parent who seeks financial windfall and personal validation by pushing his child to excel on the diamond, the gridiron, the court, or the fairways. But in light of all we know now about Tiger Woods, David Owen asks in The Chosen One, who is to say that it wasn't Tiger's transcendent greatness all along that induced his father to guide him, rather than the father pushing the son?

Not since the dawn of competitive tournament golf has anyone distanced himself from the rest of the world the way Tiger has. He is the best there is at nearly every aspect of the game: the longest driver, the strongest iron player, the most creative around the greens, and so sharp a clutch putter that when he putts well the tournament is over, and when he putts badly he often wins anyway. He is a breakthrough athlete in a sport remarkably resistant to them; in every tournament, Tiger has to beat a hundred-plus competitors, any of whom can take away a title with a four-day hot streak. When Michael Jordan won all his back-to-back championships, each night he only had to beat one team.

Tiger is also a breakthrough athlete as one of the first true multicultural icons. There are African-American, Asian, Native American, and Caucasian elements to his roots; he carries with him parts of so many ethnicities that he not only shatters stereotypes but renders the whole notion of racial classification irrelevant. It is ironic that such an athlete would emerge in golf, America's most tradition-bound and racially insensitive sport.

In The Chosen One, gifted essayist David Owen ponders the social, economic, and athletic implications of this amazing young man. We are only beginning to see all the ways that Tiger Woods might reshape the world. Owen's thoughtful, incisive, elegant, and provocative work examines this phenomenon unlike any the fields of play have ever seen, in a book that will stand alongside John McPhee's A Sense of Where You Are (about Princeton forward Bill Bradley) among the classic works of sports philosophy.

2 out of 5 stars The chosen One .......2005-02-10

The Chosen one was a very interesting book . But it only told about Tiger Wood's career and his life when he was older , getting into golf tornments and training . But otherwise it is a very good book if you were just wanting to know how he won tournments and becomeing famous . Also it told about how Tiger Woods was ridiculed by his race and how young he was , which was a problem towards his career due to reporters and newspapers.Tiger was also known as one of the multicultrual icons . Also what was interesting to people is Tiger was guided by his father rather than being pushed on.

4 out of 5 stars This book is O.K.......2004-03-17

This book was very true about the life of Tiger Woods. It keep me reading page after page. The author was a sports writer so he knew what he was writing aout and it was great.Tiger Woods is the best golfer.

2 out of 5 stars Has some gems.......2002-09-08

A collection of few chapters with the authors own ideas and thoughts thrown in too liberally, it is more of the author's view of Tiger Woods. Does not qualify as an biography, just a bunch of articles. Does has a few gems which make it worthwhile.

4 out of 5 stars GOLF'S ANNOINTED.......2002-07-02

Over the past century golf has produced some of the greatest players of all times. None, however, have reached the caliber of skill and magnitude of Eldrick "Tiger" Woods. In such a short time and at an early age Tiger has raised the sport of golf to a higher level. Who is this young man who has broken golf records, establishes new ones and inspires a new generation to seriously take up the sport of golf?

David Owen deals with that question in this well written and concise book about Tiger Woods and his impact upon golf. He examines Woods' training, his place in history, his impact on the sport and the public's fascination with him. As a contributing editor of Golf Digest, our author doesn't inundate you with Woods' golf statistics. Nor does he give you an in depth expose of Tiger's life. Owen gives a positive even handed treatment of Woods life and career. He is just as fascinated with this young phenomenon of golf as we are but doesn't worship Woods. He respects and admires this young sportsman.

I enjoyed this book because it enlighten me about the development of Woods' career. Tiger comes across as a disciplined young man who is highly competitive, focused and has high expectations of himself and for those around him. His aura and the way he has carried himself forces his opponents to improve their game. Tiger's impact upon golf is immense as Owen has shown throughout the story.

This is an excellent book for fans of Woods, golf enthusiasts and those who love sports in general. I am not a sports fan but I picked up this book in passing. I was impressed by Woods' character, discipline and commitment. I highly recommend this book which has given us a snap shot of a true sportsman that adults and young people can admire and emulate. Woods has made himself one of the greatest golf players of all time but he has transcended the game. He serves as an example of excellence for life whose lessons we can certainly take to heart.

            Book Description

“Chosen,” the word is laced with awe throughout the kingdom. To be chosen is to bring honor and glory, or banishment and death. For the new group of “Chosen” it has meaning they have yet to understand and implications yet to realize by being summoned to such a high calling, though some already have a plan. Adonia has the deepest love and respect for the King and would go to any length for his honor. Meanwhile, Plickta despises the King and seeks to find a way to literally bury him. The calling has been issued, the ten have gathered, and the assignment given. They are to create a whole new world in which they will lead, but only one can be King. Even before the world is finished sides are taken and lines drawn. Who will become ruler of their creation? What force will armor the one chosen to be the new king; love, cunning, brute force, wisdom, or pure luck.

            5 out of 5 stars I'm Maria Salvitti Brodeur's cousin!.......2003-10-21

            Hey all!:

My name's Ang and I'm Maria Salvitti Brodeur's cousin. I'm related to her from my Mom's side of the family. One of my mother's uncles' daughter's gave birth to Maria. Maria is such a beautiful person and I hope that God will keep her in His care. I've only met Maria twice (her remarkable story tells you how she had found her Mom (my Mom's cousin) and how she had brilliantly discovered her past). I'm soo glad that I know Maria and that she's in my family. I just wish that I had known her for a longer period of time. I do wish her the best of luck in life and that the Lord, above, will guide her and her family to peace and happiness for they all deserve it.:-) Keep up the great job, Cousin Maria, and keep in-touch! God bless and take care, always.

            Sincerely,

            Ang

            5 out of 5 stars A Search Rewarded.......2003-05-05

This book is well written, easy to read and addresses a problem that troubles many in today's world. It tells the story of an adopted woman's search for her birth parents and her need to put to rest a life long feeling that her life was not quite complete without knowing about them. Her effort to identify and find them reads like a detective story except the plot is overlaid with the author's constant concern that her efforts would impose on the lives and relationships of the characters in the story.

The way the author handled situations requiring sensitivity yet boldness shows her to be a person of great determination and moral strength. Reading this book should be inspiring to persons who embark on a hunt for their unknown birth parents or to anyone seeking to solve a seemingly hopeless task.

5 out of 5 stars Both poignant and inspiring.......2003-05-04

The Chosen One by Maria Brodeur is both poignant and inspiring. It is the story of the search for her roots. I found her book to be an excellent read--one that touches every emotional fiber. It portrays her resoluteness to overcome obstacle after obstacle in her great search. Finally, her accomplishments leave the reader with great satisfaction, and happieness for her.

            5 out of 5 stars Warm & Inspiring!.......2003-05-01

I could not put this book down from when I picked it up! It is an amazing story of Maria's journey to find her natural past. It is an inspiring account of a woman's determination and strength to dig into the unknown, combined with the unfaultering love and support of her family and faith. It not only delights with a happy ending but is proof of what can be achieved with courage and persistance. Loved it!

            5 out of 5 stars Challenges.......2003-04-27

I very much enjoyed Ms. Brodeurs' inspiring story of her struggle to find her birth parents.
Her journey was filled with many challenges, dead end streets, and the luck of the draw, but the enormous support she received from her family carried her through, enabling her to come full circle.
