5 out of 5 stars Easy way to play 100 unforgettable hits.......2001-02-16

There are a hundred reasons why I love this book and would recommend it to anyone. 1...It has the notes, the chords and best of all it has the easy numbering system where c is 1 ; d is 2; e is 3 ; f is 4; etc........2...don't let the easy numbering system discourage you.....the opposite is true......if you have some initial success playing show tunes and old favorites you will continue playing music.........3.....Your success will motivate you to practice without noticing how much work you are doing....it will be fun..........4.......You will do songs like THE WAY WE WERE, I LEFT MY HEART IN SAN FRANCISCO, STARDUAST, SEPTEMBER SONG, FLY ME TO THE MOON, APRIL IN PARIS, DIXID, THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND, GOD BLESS AMERICA, ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT AND SO much, much more.......5......the idea with music is to have fun.........6......to be able to gather around the piano and play some tunes is a real confidence builder.......7......like exercise equipment, language courses and so many other activities, if you don't have success along the way you will give up.......you have success which motivates even more success............8....even more remarkable is that from playing these show songs you develope a feel or style of your own and you get a "sense of music" that is invaluable..........9.......I like the idea that with a few hours of practice on a song you can have fun with it.........10......maybe your classical music teacher will shake his head, but you will make more progress on the time put in than with so many of the other courses or books......11....Here is the sad and funny part to the whole review....something this wonderful is out of print.......it shows you that people in our society often fail to appreciate wonderful and simple pleasures............It was written in 1991........12.....the reason I would buy and own one or more of these books is that they will help you in family and social situations.....suppose you want to meet that cute girl or handsome guy........being able to sit down and play EMBRACEABLE YOU, FOOLS RUSH IN , GREENSLEEVES, I CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU OR IN THE MOOD can be very useful............it is great to be able to teach others to play, to share this book, for romantic moments, .......it is useful to play the piano the way knowing how to dance is useful...........13....nearly all of us have taken a few piano lessons and we learned dumb, go no where songs.....when we see someone who can play great show tunes, great film memories, look back fondly tunes or inspiration, country or special songs at Christmas a sense of fun, envy and wanting to hang with that person happens.........14.....In several instances when I sat down with this book, girlfriends were impressed, wanted to hear more or we just had fun with the words and melodies.......15............In today's rushed world where time is at a premium, learning 100 old standards can be a priceless tool...........Instead of spending weeks learning Topcatta and Fuge in D minor which is great, learning a half dozen or two dozen show tunes can be priceless.........16.....not only does the book have words, but a little history of each song..............17.....finally, for the serious musician you will appreciate the fact that you can do blending......by that I mean you can effortlessly shift from THE WAY WE WERE to AS TIME GOES BY..... and then back again.......18.....also I found that as I learned these songs I learned a lot about logical chord progressions that make the songs work.......19....they picked easy to play but hard to forget melodies.....20.....once you mastered the melodies you were doing amazing chordal changes and fancy fingerwork............21.......I think of Liberace and other musical masters like Elvis and this book lets you build your own style...........22.......this book is great for situations where you sit down, play the piano and have nice relaxed songs that help people feel mellow.........MUSIC SHOULD NOT BE TORTURE ....MUSIC SHOULD NOT HUMILIATE YOU....... this book allows you to make the progress necessary to have fun and feel that future learning is worthwhile...........I was so happy with the book that I called the publisher and wanted to buy all the other easy way to play books and discovered it was out of print.............the old joke that the really great books are always out of print is true..............don't let that discourage you.......this book is great

5 out of 5 stars Great piano for all levels.......2000-05-26

This book has several levels to play from, two hands, one hand notes, and one hand numbers, all together. This makes it easy to advance with both hands. For the more experienced player the tunes have the chords and enough changes in key to play a lot of nice songs quickly. Has sections for whatever mood you may feel like playing that day, such as show tunes, hits, and seasonal favorites. Large for easy reading and well worth adding to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great songs - Great format!.......1998-02-22

If you like the classic songs from popular music to show tunes in an easy to read format, this is for you. It gives suggested settings for keyboard and melody line with chords. It also has easy to play treble and bass, but experienced musicians will be able to fill in as desired.

5 out of 5 stars Total Inspiration!.......2004-02-17

Oh my goodness. What an inspiration!

With all of the negative things in politics and the news today what a wonderful refuge and inspiration to read about and read the words of these amazing men and women, and to hear them in their own voices.

I never knew about Teddy Roosevelt's environmental speech way back in 1903, loved reading the entire "luckiest man" speech by Lou Gehrig, the entire "only thing to fear is fear itself" speech by FDR and the magical words of Einstein. Who knew that he could write and speak that brilliantly.

But my favorites were Barbara Jordan, who sent chills down my spine with her amazing voice and, of course, reading the entire "I Have A Dream" speech with Mr. Greene's analysis of every paragraph. I knew it was great but, with this insight into WHY it was great it has become even more amazing to me.

If only leaders spoke today, and lead today, like the leaders in this book!!

3 out of 5 stars Words that shook my pocketbook.......2004-02-05

What a joke. I could have put together those speeches by going on-line but purchased the book since it had a CD of the speeches. The historical notes are very helpful but not as complete as would be expected. Also, in so far as the CD , it does not say they are excerpts on the cover of my book. Not anywhere! I sat down with my kids on Martin Luther King's birthday to listen to his "I have a dream" speech only to find that the CD contains less than 1 minute, barely 35 or so seconds of Dr. King's voice. What a disappointment it was. I had put so much emphasis on that day, history lesson and all and the final climax was to be an after-dinner family event to listen to Dr. King's unforgettable speech in his own voice. The same holds true about all the other speeches, they are excerpts. You would think that for the cost all the speeches would be complete. The cost cannot be much more, you already have had to have permission to do the excerpt. Like I said, you can listen to all of these on-line, complete. How very sad that the author believes we would rather listen to his voice introducing these great icons of our past rather than the actual historical figure's voice.

4 out of 5 stars Step back into history.......2003-12-30

Richard Greene does an excellent job presenting the historical context of these important 20th century speeches and then provides a blow-by-blow analysis of what makes them great. For those of us who were not born yet or were too young to appreciate Churchill, FDR, John Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Albert Einstein and other great people of the 20th century this book is a wonderful way to go back in time and experience history. The book contains the full text of over 40 speeches and short excerpts from twenty of them on the two accompanying CDs.

My only complaint is that the excerpts on the CD are too short. For example, the excerpt from Martin Luther King's "I have a Dream" speech is only 39 seconds long. This is probably the best speech of the 20th century -- I would like to hear the whole thing. If the cost of producing the CDs is the reason for the short excerpts I would much rather hear the original speeches than the introductions by the book's author.

I have no issues with the selection of the speeches. Yes, they are biased towards Americans, and some are perhaps there are better choices for a few of them, but with over 40 speeches included it is not a great loss to skip a few. Most of them are unequivocally great speeches and this book does a great job presenting them.

1 out of 5 stars Poor selection.......2003-12-10

I wouldn't touch a book that lists a speech delivered as an eulogy for Princess Diana as a something that 'shook the world'.

It also suffers from the sin common to most Americans- being blind to most things that happen outside America. The author has no clue on what happened elsewhere in the world- for instance misses out on the powerful oratory of Nehru and Gandhi that to no small extent was reponsible for the British Empire to come crumbling down. Instead we have a roster of American presidents starting with Teddy Roosevelt and ending with Dubya..

Perhaps 'Words that shook America' or even 'Words that shook me' would have been a more accurate title.

5 out of 5 stars Ever give a speech? You need this book........2003-04-21

I've been a speech coach, writer and teacher for 18 years, and there are many times in the past when I've wished I've had something like this book -- to use with clients, to quote from, to inspire students. All the greatest speeches of the last century are here, and they deserve study. To have many of them on a cd just adds to the usefulness of the book. You can hear the magnificent cadences of speakers like Kennedy and King, Jr and learn how it's done. For all those who give presentations or speeches -- or for anyone who cares about great rhetoric and moments when the world was changed by the collision of words and passion -- this book is a must-have.

This is a book that I reccomend to all of my franchise stores that I support. This is a glossary or handbook of great service and marketing. There is no reinventing the wheel in this little book but a refernce of the tried and true. Each example is supported with results and successes. The multiple companies referred to are known companies who lead their markets in service.

I encourage my stores to take a highlighter to this book of concepts and write notes in the margins. They will refer to this book often. This is 165 pages of good information.

5 out of 5 stars all business owners should read this book.......2007-07-11

I read this book in one day while I was on vacation. I was so inspired, I couldn't wait to get back to work to begin a new customer service policy in our salon. We already do some of the rituals for our guests, but this book gave me so many more ideas. John Dijullius is so right about creating systems and sticking with them, day in and day out. Can't wait for the second book!!!!

Even though I am in the same industry as the author, this book is full of great ideas any business could use to implement systems to improve their customer service. We have used many of the ideas with great results. Mr. DiJulius gives you these wonderful ideas and how to implement them. If you read his book you'll see why his company is so successful. I require my staff to read this book when they are hired. This is one of my favorite business books!

5 out of 5 stars A jaw-dropping cliffhanger, and various plot revelations make this 'It Girl' installment 'Unforgettable'.......2007-09-29

Waverly Academy Sophomore, Jenny Humphrey, has done everything in her power to convince herself that her relationship with the resident horse-loving, sullen artist, Easy Walsh, was picture perfect. But after a game of I Never...initiated by the queen of mean herself, Tinsley Carmichael, Jenny is forced to face facts and come to terms with the knowledge that everything between her and Easy is certainly not as smooth sailing as she'd hoped. Easy has been wooing his ex-girlfriend - and Jenny's current Dumbarton roommate - Callie Vernon. What Jenny is still completely oblivious to, however, is the fact that not only have Easy and Callie gone out to dinner on more than one occasion, they've also shared more than a few secret kisses between one another. Jenny is heartbroken, and convinced that she needs time away from Easy to get her thoughts together. Callie, sucking up her me, me, me attitude suddenly becomes Jenny's best friend, sharing hugs, and telling secrets. It appears that she's realized how un-worth her time Easy is, and is much more interested in making nice with Jenny. But things can't stay that way forever. Especially when Easy is currently contemplating the situation, weighing the pros and cons of each girl to figure out who, exactly, holds the key to his heart. Sure, he thinks Jenny's fresh-faced innocence is adorable, but he has history with Callie. It seems like a simple decision, but even the moody Easy is having trouble balancing his feelings. Speaking of feelings, Tinsley - the girl who possesses none - is still hooking up with the ultra-hot freshman, Julian McCafferty. Of course, the violet-eyed beauty is concerned about her reputation, and, much to the chagrin of Julian, insists that the two keep their trysts on the down-low, to ensure that no one learns that Tinsley has gone the way of Mrs. Robinson, and begun to rob the cradle with a younger boy - even if he is as handsome as Julian. Flaming-haired Brett Messerschmidt, on the other hand, is fed up with the entire male population, as well as trouble-making Tinsley. After learning that her steady boyfriend, Jeremiah, cheated on her with another girl during their brief break-up, and having her heart stomped on by the gorgeous Mr. Dalton, all within a few weeks of one another, Brett comes to the conclusion that boys just aren't worth her time. So she, along with the help of her new best friend, Kara Whalen decide to organize the Women of Waverly (WOW) club - a forum where all the female students at Waverly can get together to vent, fume, and just discuss boys, love, life, and any other topic plaguing their minds. The club instantly brings everyone together, as they reveal some of the most personal secrets of their lives. But some things need to remain unspoken - like who's hooking up at the crater, and who's cheating on whom. All this bonding, however, can't last long, as the sudden rush of girl power is sure to end up in a knock-down, blow-up girl fight that can't possibly stay contained within the ivy-covered walls of Waverly, and will determine who, exactly the next It Girl will be.

While many YA series lose steam after the first or second book, Cecily von Ziegesar manages to introduce new characters, and fresh plot situations within the pages of each IT GIRL installment, that keep the reader hooked on not only the storyline, but each and every new face that appears. GOSSIP GIRL's Jenny Humphrey still seems to stay on top. Her unfaltering naivete, and fresh-faced innocence make her an adorable, unthreatening character whom you can't help but sympathize with, and adore. Combine that with her fun-loving, caring personality, and you have the makings of a character who resembles your best friend, and is impossible to resist. Callie's mean streak falters slightly within UNFORGETTABLE, and manages to reveal a vulnerable side to her personality - one that makes the reader see her struggle with an eating disorder, and problems within her family. The raw emotion she displays as she claws her way into Easy's heart is hard to ignore; while her attempts to win Jenny's friendship work to show the reader that she does, indeed, have a heart. There is always that slight hesitation from the reader, however, that makes you think her nastiness could return at any moment, making her a hard character to trust. Kara's introduction to the series in RECKLESS was interesting, yet she remains a prevalent addition to the cast within the pages of UNFORGETTABLE. Her offbeat personality, and style make her the perfect pal for Brett, and seeing their slightly confusing relationship - for them - grow from page to page is no doubt interesting. The party-hardy, beer-loving, grass-smoking, Heath Ferro, on the other hand, is still as humorous as ever. And, oddly enough, he's suddenly palling around with both Brett and Kara, which instantly makes his presence more prevalent than ever. It's also nice to see more of Julian in the picture, as he has more to his personality than just the ability to hook-up with an older woman, and that shines through within the pages of UNFORGETTABLE. Tinsley, however, is slightly cast out of the limelight within this installment, taking a backseat to not only Kara, but Heath and Julian, as well. However, while her character is seen much less than usual within UNFORGETTABLE, the few times she does hit the spotlight are both memorable, and nasty to the bone, making it obvious that she has something planned for the students of Waverly that no one ever expected. A jaw-dropping cliffhanger, and various plot revelations make this IT GIRL installment UNFORGETTABLE.

I thought this book was the best one out of the four and I can't wait until the next one. The only thing I didn't like is how the author leaves you hanging at the end. The more I read about Brett and Kara the more respect I had for Heath. Also B and K remind me of Willow and Tara of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In my opinion Easy needs to stay with Callie this time so Jenny and Julian can have a chance. Tinsley was the character that made me mad at the end of this book because of how extra, extra mean she was. Can't wait until number 5 to see how or if things will work out.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and Compelling, but...........2007-06-23

The characters that i was beginning to like, Von Ziegesar made me hate at the end. I don't like the way Ziegesar creates a friendship between 2 characters but just to have them broken apart at the end. If Brett, Jenny, Kara and Heath were not in this book, this book would be about trashy whores with a lot of money.

Keep it up guys.

3 out of 5 stars there are better books on characterization.......2005-02-07

Unlike her book, Making a Good Script Great, this book is disappointing. Creating characters involves: "getting the first idea..., creating the first broad strokes, finding the core of the character...finding the paradoxes within the character..., adding emotions, attitudes, and values, adding details to make the character specific and unique" (p.23). These steps are then elaborated in separate chapters (although the elaboration consists mostly of extended examples of films most people--those who actually saw the films--would consider to be mixed bags at best, long series of autobiographical paragraphs, and extended quotes from screenwriters ruminating about their experiences in writing this or that character). Seldom is information actually added to that already given on page 23.
There are also chapters on backstory--use backstory only when you have to (p.56), minor characters, dialogue--"bad dialogue is difficult to speak...all characters sound alike...spells out every thought...simplifies people instead of revealing their complexity" (p.151), and nonrealistic characters. Also a chapter on avoiding stereotypes and other character problems such as unlikable characters and vague characters.

There is only enough actual information in the book to fill an article; but if you are a beginning screenwriter, this book (and many others) can be a help to you. The thing to be careful of is (a) emulating writing from movies that most viewers were lukewarm about. You want to learn the best techniques, not the mediocre ones. And (b) thinking that if you've read this book, you know all you need to know about characterization. You don't. Far from it.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, Good Characters.......2004-10-06

Before I read this book, I have to admit - my characters were all pretty lame. Then, hey, I read this book, and boom! Ok, so they still need work, but this book made me understand how to keep characters exotic, good, and believable.
The first part of this book didn't interest me as much, because it was advising on how to make sure your characters are good on their background - of people who live in this world. This wasn't 'really' helpful for me, because I write fantasy in other worlds, but I picked up a few helpful things.
Then came a section on Dialogue, which was good too - at the time I was reading it I didn't realize it, I thought it was a bit dull, but then I realized I had started taking the advice unconciously.
But then came along the next part of the book, and I could hardly wait to pick it up each time. It explains greatly how to make sure your characters aren't hollow, and how they should respond in situations according to their attitudes and past life.
This book I highly recommend to any author who feels his characters aren't to their full potential (or if they don't want to admit that, this book was fun to read as well).

4 out of 5 stars A great "How To" for new and experienced Writers.......2004-07-04

"Creating Unforgettable Characters" succeeds in giving practical steps in the development of character. The book covers several disciplines like psychology, acting, backstory and relationships in an effort to refine and inform the way you approach your characters. For more experienced writers looking to drill down rewrites, the digestible 'get to the freakin' point' style of the book helps you get to what you need, instead of wasting your time lording over topics you don't give shlip about (if I could only take a minute of life away from every author who's wasted my time patting themselves on the back for their puddling observations... there'd be a lot of dead folks in LA).

Particularly useful are the summarizations and categorical exercises at the end of each chapter, helping you immediately implement the lesson into your writing. There are also frequent exercises throughout the book to help jog your mind in relation to your characters.

Seger gives special attention to minor, supporting and nonrealistic characters which populate every script, but are often neglected. Seger's not asking for every character to be the central figure of your narrative... but they better be the central figure of their own story in some way. The book helps in creating characters, small and large, that have a reason for being. It's easy to neglect lesser characters, when they should be poignant and relevant.

Thankfully, Seger has the 'How' mentality that is missing from so many other books on writing. If you are new to writing, this is an excellent resource for illuminating all the elements that go into making a fully fleshed out character. If you're an experienced writer and are looking for a way to make your characters 'pop' off the page a bit more, "Creating Unforgettable Characters" could help you find that edge.

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable.......2003-10-12

This book is phenomenal for nearly any writer, because of the wide range of characters Seger uses as examples. She offers sage advice on making your characters unique and leaving a lasting effect on the reader/viewer. Readers of this book will undoubtly recognize every character referenced from movies, television and novels.

I keep returning to this book repeatedly, trying to find an idea, a thought, a quality to give my characters. And it always works.

In the bestselling tradition of Ten Things I Wish I'd Known......and The Right Words at the Right Time comes a collection of inspirational wisdom from beloved lacrosse coach, the late Diane Geppi-Aikens. Loyola College of Maryland Women's Lacrosse Coach Diane Geppi-Aikens would have been a remarkable role model simply as one of the nation's top lacrosse coaches. But this single mother of four battled inoperable brain tumors for eight years. Partially paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair, Geppi-Aikens missed only one game as she coached her #1 ranked team into the semi-finals of the NCAAchampionships. In spite of the terrible tragedy threatening her life, she managed to get her players to consider her lucky. Now, in the wake of this courageous woman's death comes an incredibly inspirational book. In 20 short chapters, Geppi-Aikens's unique and uplifting teachings live on through the memories of those she inspired most. H In Geppi-Aikens's final season, she and her players made memorable appearances on the Today show, Good Morning America, and CBS Evening News. She was also featured in Sports Illustrated, College Sports TV, and Lacrosse Magazine. H Books offering inspirational advice from high-profile women, such as Maria Shriver's Ten Things I Wish I'd Known.... (Warner, 2000) and Marlo Thomas's The Right Word at the Right Time (Atria, 4/02), are perennial bestsellers. H Diane Geppi-Aikens won the 2003 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Inspiration Award. The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Association has renamed their Lifetime Achievement Award in her honor. H Chip Silverman is the author of five books, including Diner Guys (Carroll, 1989) and The Block (Scribe, 1994), which served as the basis for Barry Levinson's famous films, including the classic Diner. He is a former lacrosse player and was also Head Coach for Morgan State College and for the University of Baltimore.

"Lucky Every Day," written by Chip Silverman, should be read by all. Diane Geppi-Aikens is a true inspiration. Her principles for living can be applied to every aspect of my life, every day of my life. This book is not to be missed!

5 out of 5 stars I'd like to give it ten stars.......2004-04-24

I followed Ms. Geppi-Aikens final season at Loyola last year through articles in national publications along with television coverage such as the Today Show, ESPN, and Good Morning America. Her accomplishments as a lacrosse coach, and as an individual dying of brain cancer were awe-inspiring. Because of that I bought her book "Lucky Every Day"; and, after reading it in one sitting I now understand why she was such a remarkable individual. Author Chip Silverman has put together an outstanding series of stories from her former players that are motivating and truly inspirational; and relate not just to sports, but to every facet of humanity. Interestingly, I found this book quite a departure from two other books that I have read by Silverman: Diner Guys which follows the lives of the guys immortalized in Barry Levinson's film "Diner"; and "Ten Bears" an account of the first and only black college lacrosse team and its exploits as told by Silverman, the white coach of the black team. I would love to give ten stars to "Lucky Every Day", but you limit me to five.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational book.......2004-04-23

I enjoyed reading this book. It was very fast reading and most enjoyable. One does not have to be a lacrosse or sports fan to be inspired by the lessons of Diane Geppi-Aikens. The anecdotes from her former players and the format of each chapter can inspire and motivate people from all walks of life be it business, social, etc. It also makes a great graduation gift, and I am buying my mother one for Mother's Day.

Book Description

New York Times bestselling author Mary Balogh returns to the seductive world she knows so well–Regency England–in a new novel filled with her trademark wit, sensuality, and breathtaking storytelling. With this, the first in a dazzling new quartet of novels, Balogh invites us into a special world–a select academy for young ladies–a world of innocence and temptation. Drawing us into the lives of four women, teachers at Miss Martin’s School for Girls, Balogh introduces this novel’s marvelous heroine: music teacher Frances Allard–and the man who seduces her with a passion no woman could possibly forget.…

They meet in a ferocious snowstorm. She is a young teacher with a secret past. He is the cool, black-caped stranger who unexpectedly comes to her rescue. Between these two unlikely strangers, desire is instantaneous…and utterly impossible to resist. Stranded together in a rustic country inn, Lucius Marshall, who is the Viscount Sinclair, and Frances Allard share a night of glorious, unforgettable passion. But Frances knows her place–and it is far from the privileged world of the sensual aristocrat. Due to begin her teaching position at Miss Martin’s School in Bath, Frances must try to forget that one extraordinary night–and the man who touched her with such exquisite tenderness and abandon.

But Frances cannot hide forever. And when fate once again throws them together, Lucius refuses to take no for an answer. If Frances will not be his wife, he will make her his mistress. So begins an odyssey fraught with intrigue, one that defies propriety and shocks the straitlaced ton. For Lucius’s passionate, single-minded pursuit is about to force Frances to give up all her secrets–except one–to win the heart of the man she already loves.

Once again this incomparable storyteller captures a time and a place like no other. And in Lucius and Frances, Mary Balogh gives us her most unlikely lovers yet–a nobleman in search of the perfect wife and an unconventional woman willing to risk everything for an unforgettable love.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This Book is Unforgettable!.......2007-08-19

It just goes to show you, different strokes for different folks. I almost didn't buy the book because of some of the negative reviews but I'm glad I did. I loved it and sat up all last night anxious to get to the happy ending... then I was sorry it was done. I'm always sad when I finish a great book. I loved Lucius. He was the ideal male romantic figure, in my opinion. He loved her enough to give her the space she needed to work things out for herself. He wasn't arrogant, domineering and rough as some of the romantic characters. I liked him a lot.

I think we have all known a Frances in our lives. A sweet, quiet little Italian girl with big brown eyes that can melt the coldest of hearts.

Mary has outdone herself with this book. I was able to understand the thinking of the characters, their motives but for the life of me I was totally baffled about her secret. The author tied all her strings together to make one wonderful book.

I would also like to congratulate the author for the beautiful covers on her books. I know that an established writer has a lot of input as to the covers and I absolutely refuse to buy a book with a sexy, vulgar cover. Your books are all tastefully packaged.

2 out of 5 stars Deadly Dull.......2007-07-31

This book was so disappointing. It's full of cliches and ridiculous behavior. You have the virgin schoolmarm who is beautiful but doesn't know it and the high society rake who must marry a high born lady to pacify his grandaddy. These two conveniently get stranded together (without chaperone) during a snowstorm and within what seems like hours decide to have sex because, well, you can only make so many snowmen in a day, eh? Did I mention that she was a virgin? But the worst sin of this book is the fact that the writing is so freaking boring. This author usually excels at characterization and character motivation but this time it feels like she wrote it while on auto-pilot and it makes me so very sad.

1 out of 5 stars Simply Unendurable!.......2007-03-23

First off, I adore Mary Balogh and her Bedwyns. That series has set the bar very high so maybe if this book was not measured against those I would have liked it better. Or not. Frankly I simply did not like either one of the main characters. Occasionally they would say something witty and warm and I would think Ah, now it will start up. But it never did. And the big secret was such a rip off, something that could have been resolved in ten minutes if the right questions had been asked and answered. And they would have been in the normal course of things, if her big secret wasn't simply a plot device so had to be held to the end.

And worst of all, all the secondary characters conversations were all so stupid and trivial. I found myself constantly saying "ridiculous people" under my breath.

But Mary is allowed a lousy book and she's still a first clas writer in my book. I have hope for the rest of the series. Maybe. The whole teacher thing is so uninspiring for me. The idea that any woman would prefer it to a home and family is just too ridiculous. In the present sure, but not back in that time. Being a spinster teacher was Simply Dreary.

2 out of 5 stars Simply Forgettable.......2006-12-19

Boring, boring, boring, boring, boring. That's it. I can't remember anything about this book aside from finding it a waste of money and time.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but ultimately forgettable.......2006-11-04

This is the first of Mary Balogh's "Simply" series currently being written which focuses on four women who teach at a school in Bath. Although this book works well as a standalone, long-time Mary Balogh fans will spot links to some of her other series (the Bedwyns are mentioned, as are a few other characters who have shown up in other books).

Frances Allard is travelling back from her two great-aunts' house after spending Christmas with them. She's on the road to Bath when a significant snowstorm causes her problems. Eventually her coach slides into a ditch and she's rescued by a rude and insulting gentleman. She has to go with him in his carriage to the nearest Inn - which turns out to be closed. However, she and the gentleman, Lucius Marshall, have to make the Inn habitable and stay there whilst the snow makes travelling impossible.

Of course, being thrown together with a dishy man in the privacy of an Inn for a couple of days makes her change her initial view of him as rude and unfriendly - they discover a shared enjoyment of simple fun like peeling potatoes, building snowmen, waltzing... and their relationship moves to rather more intimate. When the snow melts Lucius delivers her to Bath, trying to persuade her to become his mistress - but Frances refuses. She is content with her life as a teacher and not willing to throw this all away on a rake's whim.

At this point I wondered where the story was going - how would they meet again? Lucius happens to be Viscount Sinclair, heir to his grandfather's Earldom (his father has already died) and he has promised to get married by the summer. His intended, Portia Hunt, is perfect but cold and he has no real interest in her, but family pressure is strong. However, he finds himself back in Bath with his grandfather, bumps into Frances again after a gap of three months, and this meeting has significant consequences for both of them and for their futures.

The book is, in some ways, a coming-of-age book although the hero is 28 and the heroine 23. Lucius discovers, over the course of the book, that his youthful desire for raking and having fun is changing - he now appreciates far more the traditional grown-up and dull things such as his family and the concept of a wife and home - as long as it is the correct wife. Frances had a rather unusual upbringing but a bad experience aged 20 has caused her to be afraid of danger and exposure to London people and to hide herself away as a teacher. She has an amazing gift for singing but is afraid of the repercussions if people hear her who remembered her before and her hint of scandal. Many of Mary Balogh's books seem to have a heroine with a secret in her past which turns out not to be such an issue when faced - in some ways this theme is getting a little tired to me.

Viscount Sinclair is an unusual hero in that, although physically gorgeous (of course!) he seems to work his way through the book doing whatever he wants and not really respecting Frances' wishes. He seems to go back on his word ("I won't bother you anymore, this will be goodbye") a surprising amount of times for an honourable nobleman! Still, who wouldn't find a handsome man pursuing you with marriage proposals rather pleasant - I know I would!

One of my traditional gripes - Mary Balogh, despite being born in England, has fallen into some of the traps that American authors of Regencies write. Or perhaps it was her editor. The spelling in my edition is American (which is to be expected) but some sentence forms and structures are also not entirely English. The Christmas time is called "holiday" in phrases where it wouldn't be in British English; people "visit" when we would use a different sentence structure; and, a common Mary Balogh failing, the Baron of somewhere is "Baron Cliffe" rather than "Sir John Cliffe" or "Sir John." No-one is referred to as "Baron X" in the English peerage. Such a simple error but remarkably annoying when I read it regularly in her books.

Overall this book is a perfectly acceptable way to spend an afternoon - there are some good scenes, the dialogue is good, the attraction between the two (although apparently based mostly on physical appearance) does make sense, but having read this book I don't think I'll remember much about it in six months. It wasn't fresh and gripping enough to be simply unforgettable.

2 out of 5 stars Way too basic.......2006-08-15

If you are extreamly new at photography or maybe working for a high-school newspaper, this book would work well.

For anyone that is serious about hard-core photojournalism, like the professionals the book highlights, I do not recomend it.

I was looking for a book on some on ways to break into some of the big names. I just assumed that since it was an AP book.

4 out of 5 stars "A Good Primer on Photojournalism (PJ)".......2006-07-17

"Associated Press Guide to Photojournalism", Brian Horton, McGraw-Hill NY, 2nd. ed. 2001, ISBN 0-07-136387-4, SC 223 pgs.

Sports photo editor at A-P since 1971, Horton has many credits including 2 books on news photography. This text explains PJ (picture story) - how a photographer "sees the story" is a skill requiring experience, insight, anticipation, inventiveness, & a passion. Often "breaking stories" are heavily covered & many photos require sensitivity, rapport, knowledge of equipment so to acquire a style using composition, cropping & those angles to communicate photo stories of news, emotions, life experiences, etc.

Horton quotes an A-P policy adopted in 1990 indicating "the content of a photograph will never be changed or manipulated in any way". Horton then goes on to recite of some widely published photos with recognized manipulations & public outcries leading to general distrust of media by the populace (& rightly so!). Indeed, even cropping can be viewed as manipulation, the latter generally a product of Madison Avenue influences that shouldn't reflect PJ integrity (need for well insulated photo editors).

Relying on "photo setups" can numb public's perceptions & lessen reality. Telephoto lenses as 80-200 zoom provides close-ups without intrusion despite an onerous sanctifying of 24 mm wide-angle to fill the frame by getting into the subject's face & personal space. Author interviews 8 pros on their perspectives & experiences in PJ & then concludes with a short summary of some changes in photography over the past half-century, namely the gradual switch from 4"x5" to 2 1/4" to 35 mm to color & now electronic (digital) imaging.

As a former newspaper photographer I'd been taught a good PJ shot did not require a title. I found Horton's book exacting, full of exciting photos, many good "how to" tips, and how PJ news photography has evolved into specialized art forms for optimum coverage of war, natural disaster, politics, crime, disease & subspecialities of certain sports as basketball, football, Olympics, Indy 500, etc. It is a pleasant, informative read, not overtly technical & fairly priced.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Overview, Good for Motivational Purposes.......2006-01-11

I bought this book in hopes to satisfy my curiosity about photojournalism. I would say this book did a pretty good job of doing that. Although it doesn't address any real specifics of photojournalism, it does deliver a lot of the basic principles and general knowledge.
For what it was worth, I found this book to be an excellent read, with plenty of insights that would be valuable to any photographer, written with a very simplistic approach. I can see how ideas presented in this book could be applied to other areas of photography and not be limited to the field of photojournalism.
If you're novice photographer and looking for a technical, how-to, reference book, this is not the book for you. If you a photographer of any level, and you want to broaden your general knowledge of photojournalism, then this book would be a fine addition to your library. Also, I feel that this book could be used as a warm-up read prior to diving into the more advanced, technical books available on the topic.

1 out of 5 stars Useless and boring..........2005-10-15

I am very sorry but I found this book to be totally useless and boring. I was sorry to spend money for it. There is no real insight into the world of photojournalism out of my point of view.
I'd rather suggest reading Howard Chapnicks book "Truth Needs No Ally: Inside Photojournalism" or Ken Lights "Witness in Our Time: Working Lives of Documentary Photographers". Both excellent books, worth the money and very interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Nice introduction book.......2002-09-13

I bought this book since I want to become a photojournalist.
I am a photographer who has graduated a photo school few months ago. this book isn't for beginners, The little technical data may be misleading if read by a novice. Instead, it deals with content and the thinking and working process of photographers in this field. I find it as a nice introduction to the world of photojournalism, though a little "too good to be true" kind of book. The book definitely doesn't deal with the problems, the deadlines, the failures and the risks. This is like a postcard, where everything is perfect. There is a good side though, it is easily read, and very interesting. You want a more serious book, look some place else...
If you have the spare bucks though, don't hasitate and buy it!!!
