Customer Reviews:
Best DC Map.......2007-08-12
This was the best source for helping us maneuver through the maze of buildings, monuments, and memorials in Washington, DC. The map is very functional. Flip it one way and you see the Metro, flip it another way you see the mall, still another and you have a DC area map. Since it's laminated, I kept it in my pocket while walking around and didn't worry about it getting sweaty or damaged. I really like the detailed names of the buildings and monuments near and around the national mall. Metro stops and streets are well marked. The next best thing to GPS.
Small Map.......2007-07-16
Map is extremely small and difficult to read. It did help but, it was not easy to use, especially while driving when information is needed rapidly.
New in town lifesaver!.......2007-05-18
When I moved to DC I had only been there one additional time, my job interview! My friends got me a guide book for moving to DC and this map. It saved my life the first trip to DC on a weekend, and it helped me explore great dining since I knew how far it was to walk or Metro. I love this map so much I know have one for most cities I visit, like Manhattan!
Good things do indeed come in small packages.......2007-05-10
This map was a great help when we were in DC - the detail was fantastic and it was easy to tote around. The enlarged detail for the national mall was extremely helpful
one small detraction - the print is small - so be warned
Outstanding map... but get the right one.......2007-04-11
Streetwise maps are laminated and meant to fold up small enough to fit in a hip pocket. This map of Washington DC includes a small street index as well as an index of local attractions. There are also indexes for top attractions, parks, and public buildings. The map itself is very clear and well marked. It includes a small separate map showing the routes that the Metro trains follow. Additionally, there is page that shows a blown up map of the Mall that is amazing in its clarity as it really highlights the locations of all the museums, monuments, etc. in this highly popular tourist area.
One should be aware, however, that Amazon sells two different Streetwise maps for DC. One is labeled as "Compact" and is just 6.75" tall. The other is a bit bigger at 8.6". While this doesn't sound like a big difference, it has a huge impact on how easy it is to read the map. The small one has very fine print and can be quite difficult to make out. The larger one will still fit in a pocket and will also take major strain off of your eyes. Make sure you have the right one prior to ordering, amazon even mingles the reviews for the two so it can be a bit confusing.

Customer Reviews:
ADC - good stuff.......2007-09-14
ADC maps are without a doubt the best out there. The reason the map focuses so much on Fairfax County is that Fairfax IS NoVa. But if you need to venture outside of FFX, ADC has a whole line of maps covering the other counties.
Title could be a bit more informative.......2005-08-16
This really should be titled "Fairfax County" because that's about all it covers. Or "DC suburbs" perhaps. I found the "Regional Northern Virginia" atlas to be a lot bigger help in househunting in Northern VA as it covers 4 whole counties. Just read the descriptions carefully to make sure which "Northern Virginia" atlas you need. ADC maps are fantastic though.
Excellent - highly recommended.......2000-06-29
When I moved to Northern Virginia, from India, I found myself having to learn very fast how to motor around the area. In this, ADC's Street Map of Northern Virginia was a life-saver for me. I have lost count of how many hours I have spent poring over its pages to find out how to get to stores, offices and touristy places. The individual page maps are well laid out with colors used thoughtfully to contrast, without being garish. The text, by and large, is easy on the eyes, barring the smaller street names which require some squinting. Exhaustive index pages make finding streets and locations a piece of cake. Best of all, the maps keep in mind the differing perspectives of drivers as well as pedestrians. In fact, now that I am well familiar with the area, I often find myself flipping the pages just for the sheer peasure of it or to find something new. I must mention in particular the layout maps of the local airports, which are a great help for the unwary. For anyone who has just moved into this area or who wants to explore and discover the area better, there is no better book. Highly recommended!

Delorme Quality with a lot of versatility.......2007-08-01
These are one stop maps. Just about anything you need to know to navigate an area on foot, motorcycle or car is on easy to read pages, provided you are not overwhelmed by details normally found on Topographic maps. If you are looking for a road atlas, buy one and leave these to those looking for a little more detail. Plenty of other useful info included such as park information, camping, fishing piers, boat ramps etc. The info varies by Gazetteer.
anonymous.......2007-06-27
Delorme produces an excellent resource. If you need very specific detailed pages, you'll also need a Thomas Guide.
North Carolina Atlas & Gazetteer (North Carolina Atlas and Gazetteer).......2007-06-01
Bought in order to better plan my bike trips. Was disappointed to find numerous errors (2006 Edition) in street names of some main roads in my area and that the scale (1:500,000) does not allow for much detail. It does not suite my purpose and have few alternatives given we live off the usual city maps coverage. Will use it for car trips but the lack of detail and errors leaves me doubtful of its usefulness for leisure activities.
NC Gazetteer.......2007-01-04
I bought this atlas and gazetteer for my mother who loves to travel in books. She had heard about it on a travel program and wanted one. She has thoroughly enjoyed it and has found a lot of places in NC that she had heard about and would like to visit one day. She had never heard of it before but it was exactly what she was looking for.
Very good but a couple complaints.......2006-09-25
This highly detailed map is an invaluable reference but its size and layout make it cumbersome to refer to on the go. Also there's no overlap from one page to the next. If your route is in the middle of the page, you're in luck! But going from Asheville to neighboring Black Mountain requires flipping among 4 different pages.
Book Description
Detailed, waterproof navigational chart book of the entire Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. Includes headings and courses, Loran-C X & Y LOP's, enlargements of key ports, marina facilities chart and more.

Chesapeake B ay Maps.......2007-10-04
This is a must-have book if you boat in the
CHesapeake and/or its feeder links. Sometimes
we are too close to the forest to see the trees.
This book puts everthing in prospective and
is easy to use to plan an outing for the day
or a trip to anywhere on the bay.
Very satisfied.......2007-04-06
Came in a very timely manner and in perfect condition (as advertised). Thank you.
I Buy Every Edition.......2007-02-13
Since I began boating, I've purchased each edition of the ADC chartbook for the Chesapeake Bay. Its size is convenient versus full-size NOAA charts, it covers the whole bay with insets for major ports, the planning map is a more than decent road map, and its other features are well thought-out. The Maptech Chesapeake chartbook is even more thorough and gives the same scale as the NOAA charts (1:80,000 rather than 1:40,000 for ADC) and will be more useful for some sailors, but it is twice the size and more than twice the cost. I use both: the ADC for general voyaging and the Maptech for areas which are critical (shallow water, narrow channels, submerged hazards).
No legend on each chart.......2006-12-25
My feelings are the same as the other writers, but I will add one thing that bugs me the most. There is no distance scale on the charts. In order to see the distance measurement you must turn to the early pages of the book and find it on the one page that has it. I like having the distance scale on each chart. (Granted all charts except insets are the same scale, but when I am making a quick assessment of distance I want to see a scale not work from memory).
I now buy the cruising chart collections from a different company which come in two parts, one for Maryland, one for Virginia. Not waterproof but come with a plastic cover. (In 30+ yrs of sailing I find waterproof charts unnecessary anyway.)
Ok, but could be much better........2006-11-18
Good for general planning, but you need real charts. The criticism about it being too small is true. But the biggest problem I have with the book is that a small section of the chart is missing at the center of each chart. Where you have to turn a page to get to the next chart, there is an overlap as there should be. But down the center, where the fold would be if it was not spiral bound, you are missing a small slice of chart. What are the odds that there is something really significant in that 1/4" inch or so? It doesn't really matter, it's a pretty big mistake by the publishers that should have been caught in my opinion.

Great "go to" book.......2007-08-05
This book has it all! My hubby just entered the boating world, and this book is a great guide to rivers, campsites, boat ramps, and more. A must have if you are the adventure type!
Florida Atlas and Gazetteer (Florida Atlas & Gazetteer).......2006-07-13
A bit difficult to handle (size). Good enough to use in your car.
Florida Atlas and Gazetteer.......2006-02-27
Easy to read and use, invaluable when traveling in city or hiking in rural areas. Very detailed, provides names of area sites that are interesting to stop by, which are not included on road maps.
LACKS OF DETAILED STREET NAMES.......2003-12-31
I use this book occasionally, but it is lacks the detailed for use by itself. Where I do use it is with mapquest, that tends to not show the smaller lakes, but the Gazetteer does a much better job.
Florida Atlas & Gazateer.......2003-01-16
This is the second Delorme Atlas I have purchased and it contains a wealth of information regarding lakes and rivers for fishing. Secondary roads are clearly marked, as are boat ramps and launching areas. Many lakes are identified as to species of fish that are there. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to locate fishing areas throughout the entire state. While many of the smaller roads are not identified, it shows enough information to be able to get where you want to go. My only advice would be to label more of the smaller roads leading to the lakes.

Always a good choice.......2007-08-01
The Gazeteers are unique and very informative if you understand and can read Topographic maps. This is not the best choice for a road map but might just be the best compromise for any outdoor enthusiast looking for very good details in an easy to read and transport atlas. Great for planning backwoods adventures or finding old road alignments in many instances.
Georgia Atlas and Gazetteer.......2006-11-05
I have bought 8 DeLorme Atlas and Gazetteer atlases and think they are all superb, the best on the market. I use the co-ordinates to locate pin-point spots on the maps!
Wonderful resource, check for printing error.......2006-04-09
Very useful and about as accurate as you can get in a print edition, but a recent printing is missing some pages and has doubles of others. Check your copy, especially around pages 16-24.
Handy intermediate scale map with topography........2006-03-06
These gazetteer's offer a level of detail in between that of state travel maps and that of detailed county/city maps. They also include topography. They are handy for those traveling to various counties but who lack more detailed maps for each. They won't help much in the city proper, but are useful for finding one's way to various paved county roads. The drawback is that few county roads are labelled with their names on the maps (scale would need to be different for that.)
Fritz's Review.......2005-10-06
I found the maps useful for detailed travel in a small area. Of course they are MUCH better than the normal road map. Elevation information gives you an idea of what you can expect. My two complaints are: (1)the elevation information is difficult to see -- finding the actual elevation number to go with a line is very hard as there are few numbers and they are not highlighted to make them easier to find; and,(2) additional information about the type of road surface would be helpful for the adventurous.
Customer Reviews:
If you are going to Texas, take this with you.......2007-09-02
This is a large format map book with a lot of details. Good info on Texas place names, parks, notable Texans, and of course streets and roads. My only complaint is there is no topo feature, like the excellent DeLorme mapbooks that this resembles. I suppose in someway these maps are becoming obsolete, as many people, myself included, have mapping software, gps, and even aircards on their laptops, and increasingly built into their cars and trucks.
Still, it is nice to sit and browse a paper product from the living room or even a diner, looking at tomorrow's travels.
Great for the back roads.......2007-05-12
Use this map for discovering the back roads for motorcycle trips. Excellent resource.
Great Atlas.......2007-03-09
Has almost every major road/backroad. The only thing it doesn't have are the detailed neighborhood roads. I really recommend this book for motorcycle enthusiasts who want to explore Texas.
Excellent Source for Directions!.......2007-03-09
We who live in Texas know that with all the backroads, country roads, highways, and freeways, it's very easy to get turned around in this incredible state. This book is a life saver. My parents decided that they wanted to start taking motorcyle trips on the backroads of Texas and this book was a gem! I haven't found a more comprehensive book sense!
Great for Texas motorcyclists!.......2007-01-16
This book has all the roads you could be looking for to ride those twisty-turnies! However, the print on this edition is EXTREMELY small! There is a newer edition out, published in 2005. It has updated maps, and the print is MUCH better.

Most of us are familiar with the role that North and South Carolina played in the American Civil War: if nothing else, every grade-schooler knows the significance of the 1861 bombardment of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. But to popular historian John Buchanan, "that tragedy is of far less interest than the American Revolution. The Revolution was the most important event in American history. The Civil War was unfinished business." And the Carolinas, Buchanan convincingly argues, were the most critical theater in that conflict, with their wild Back Country seeing "a little-known but savage civil war far exceeding anything in the North."
The Road to Guilford Courthouse is no less than a tour de force of pop military scholarship, an exhaustive battle-by-battle account of the Crown's grinding march to wrest the Carolinas from the resourceful Rebels. Beginning with Colonel William Moultrie's valiant defense atop the palmetto ramparts of Fort Sullivan against an outnumbering force of British men-of-war to the final "long, obstinate, and bloody" exchange at Guilford Courthouse, Buchanan meticulously recounts each skirmish, battle, and shift of strategy in the campaign. Relying on copious primary and secondary sources, he brings the combatants to life, from the worthy but somewhat obscure, such as Nathanael Greene, whom George Washington considered to be his successor should he fall, to soon-to-be legends such as Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox. --Paul Hughes
Book Description
A brilliant account of the proud and ferocious American fighters who stood up to the British forces in savage battles crucial in deciding both the fate of the Carolina colonies and the outcome of the war.
"A tense, exciting historical account of a little known chapter of the Revolution, displaying history writing at its best."âKirkus Reviews
"His compelling narrative brings readers closer than ever before to the reality of Revolutionary warfare in the Carolinas."âRaleigh News & Observer.
"Buchanan makes the subject come alive like few others I have seen." âDennis Conrad, Editor, The Nathanael Greene Papers.
"John Buchanan offers us a lively, accurate account of a critical period in the War of Independence in the South. Based on numerous printed primary and secondary sources, it deserves a large reading audience." âDon Higginbotham, Professor of History, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Customer Reviews:
A Stunning historical achievement!.......2007-05-18
Lexington...Yorktown...Saratoga. These are some of the most popular battles fought during the American Revolution. However, John Buchanan offers an extremely valuable account of the southern theater of operations during the war.
By the fall of 1779, the war in the north had come to a grinding halt, forcing General Sir Henry Clinton to try another approach in his war against the rebels. Based on the notion that the southern portion of America held more Tories than the north, he chose to invade Charleston in late 1779 and move north.
Buchanan documents this tactic and strategy in great detail, mainly focusing on the war in the Carolinas under the leadership of General Charles, Lord Cornwallis. The amount of research the author exhibits is obvious as Buchanan goes into excruciating detail, offering the reader ample background information and individual vignettes on the major characters. Leaders such as Charles Cornwallis, Francis Marion, Banastre Tarleton, Daniel Morgan, and Nathaniel Greene are discussed in great detail. Furthermore, their individual tactics are thoroughly written upon as well as the battles in which they fought in.
Buchanan's focus is NOT a historical survey of the entire southern war, but rather the events which took place from 1780 on. Having said that, he delivers an amazingly-concise account that illustrates the valuable contribution the southern war played in America's eventual victory.
Quite good.......2007-04-02
The book has three facets that highly recommend it. First, the author has a mature intelligent voice that comes through in his writing enabling him to depict events with empathy and depth. Secondly, the work is comprehensive, describing small partisan actions that otherwise get short shrift. Third, I enjoyed his choice of assessing the command skills of the various combatants. His reasoning is sounds and buoyed well by the facts as he, admittedly, presents them. I also found his prose style engaging.
My only criticism is that he gives equal time to minor engagements and major battles. He also describes so many skirmishes that without maps or illustration they tend to dissolve into one another. Furthermore, it would have been nice if he had chosen to chronicle the remainder of the campaign. Of course, my desire for the book to be longer only demonstrates my appreciation of it.
I recommend it.
Good but not Great.......2007-03-27
In reading "The Road to Guilford Courthouse: The American Revolution in the Carolinas", I found it to be a good overview of the revolution in the South where my ancestors fought. I would have found it to be much better for my needs in researching family history if the book had more maps and a much better index. I would have preferred more maps and fewer pictures of the combatants.
Mixed feelings.......2006-11-13
I have mixed feeling towards John Buchanan's book "The Road to Guilford Courthouse--The American Revolution in the Carolinas" because although the author seems to have a good grasp of the subject and has a relatively easy-to-read writing style, he frequently gets caught up in the myriad of less relevant battle and personnel details. This makes getting through the book a grind.
Having said that, it was definitely fun to learn about some of the characters that played significant roles during the stage of the Revolutionary War that took place in the Carolinas. This is a part of the war that doesn't get much attention even though it is where the war was won, where the tides were turned. The British make a decision to get out of Philadelphia and finish up their conquest by invading through the Loyalist populated South, and then all of a sudden wind up surrendering at Yorktown. I was missing something before reading this book.
Coming from Rhode Island and being an early American history buff, I was a little disappointed that Nathanael Greene didn't get more coverage, but it appears that most of the fighting in the Carolinas was done by others, who do get their due in the book. Particularly, with regards to unknowns getting their due, it was especially fun to learn about Daniel Morgan and Banastre Tarleton, but also Thomas Sumpter and the Battle of Kings Mountain. It was interesting to get a taste of how a war was fought in the swamps of Carolina. Buchanan does do a particularly good job of quoting frequently from primary source material--this really helped to bring the 225 year old story alive.
In the end, the book could have summarized more in some areas and delved more deeply into others. Also, note that the book ends with the battles of Cowpens and Guilford Courthouse and doesn't cover the war through Virginia and the eventual surrender at Yorktown.
Finally, one very, very important problem with the book--the maps and illustrations used are totally inadequate. This makes understanding the action very difficult. Very frustrating!!
Brings His Historical Characters Back to Life.......2006-10-21
Buchanan has done a remarkable job of bringing to life the key Revoluntionary War characters and events of 1780-81 in the Carolinas. His masterful interpretation of personalities and their motives provides insight into the critical battles of the southern war. He moves back and forth between the major antagonists on both sides to develop the background for understanding the brilliance of the rebel strategy and the British arrogance that lead to their eventual loss in the south. Not only do we learn about famous personalities such as Francis Marion, Daniel Morgan, Nathanael Greene, Lord Cornwallis and Banastre Tarleton, but we gain an understanding of the anonymous mortals without whom the Revolution would have been lost: the individual militia men from the back country of the Carolinas. Buchanan has an uncanny ability to explain in simple language the complexities of the troop placement and individual unit actions that occurred in the various battles. However, his book would be immensely improved if he had provided maps of the region and of the battlegrounds he described. Like many biographers, Buchanan grows to have an attachment (or detachment) for the people he has so painstakingly researched, which I find of great interest. One must be aware of some of the potential bias that might creep in with any biographical interpretation, including his. I recently finished biographies on Daniel Morgan and Nathanael Greene, yet discovered new information about each man in Buchanan's exposition. A very thorough job, indeed. One caveat: one should probably have read somewhat extensively regarding the Revolution to fully enjoy and understand Buchanan's book. He occasionally assumes some prior knowledfge of events and people.
Book Description
In this compelling narrative history, Peter Winn tells the story of the Chilean revolution as it was seen through the eyes of the participants. Winn focuses on workers at the Yarur plant, Chile's largest cotton mill, who seized control of their factory and began to socialize its operations. Allende's plans were less radical than their own and the workers found themselves on a collision course with the government. Winn, who interviewed both the workers and Allende while many of these events were taking place, captures the turning point in Chile's "democratic road to socialism"--in both the presidential palace and the Yarur mill. He demonstrates how the revolution was "forged from below" and explains political complexities that arose from the workers' confrontation with Allende, complexities that have both eluded American understanding and frustrated U.S. foreign policy. Integrating oral history and penetrating analysis, the book offers a striking new explanation of how revolutions are radicalized. A major reinterpretation of the Allende era in Chile, this book is also a human drama that exemplifies "the new narrative history" at its best.
Customer Reviews:
Good book about revolution from below in Allende's Chile.......2007-05-13
This book is a great read for anyone who studies Latin America or Chile or simply wants to learn more about Chile under Allende. The book describes the history of the Yarur textile mill from its creation to occupation and eventual return to Yarur family control. Winn gives a descriptive account of the unionizing efforts inside the mill.
Interesting Perspective.......2006-08-07
Winn is currently a History Professor at Tufts University (added the link to his office below) but at the time he began the research for this book he was completing his doctorate at Cambridge University. It is an interesting read, mostly documented with interviews with workers at the mill themselves. Winn gives good insight into the history of the mill itself and in doing so carefully explains the Chilean political class structure and the generational differences between the less politicized older workers and the more vocal younger workers.
His main thesis, is essentially that Allende was to cautious in believing that he could appease the Christian Democratic faction of the Popular Unity coalition and instead should have embraced the calls from his own Socialist Party faction to immediately turn over factories to workers. While one may disagree with his perspective, there is no doubt that this work should be read by people from all political stripes if they want a detailed work into the politics within the PU government and grassroots activism in Chile during the Allende years.

Conflict between a revolution from above and that from below.......2000-10-09
The seizure of Yarur factory on April 25, 1971 marked the beginning of a tumultuous struggle for socialism in Chile. Salvador Allende, of the popular unity party, ran on a platform that sought to unify the working population. Allende's vow to guide Chile down the democratic road to socialism is one of his greatest legacies. The democratic road to socialism was paved, at least symbolically, with the efforts of the working class. The failures and successes of Allende's travel through la "via Chilena" hinge on whether "the Chilean revolutionary process was of and by the workers or merely for the workers." Allende would die the death of a martyr: machine gun in hand in an enflamed national palace that had been besieged by a hostile coup. If Allende died the death of martyr, to whom was he a hero? Inconsistent with traditional revolutionary ideology Allende feared a rampant revolution. As a self-proclaimed Marxist his views irked both capitalists and the middle class. El presidente compañero, regardless, was a president for the people. His core constituency demanded a revolution from below and thus complicated the revolution from above that Allende attempted to impose. With these conflicts in mind Peter Winn analyzes the extent to which Allende (a socialist) both failed and succeeded as a revolutionary.
The micro politics of revolution.......1999-09-13
I agree with the last reviewer, except for her\his curious reference to this being a "Trotskyist" view. What I like about this book is the way one can see the dilemnas and perspectives of different actors within the coalition that backed Allende. Less an endorsement of any one tendency's political line, this book brings out the tragedy of various democratic revolutionary factions all trying to do the right thing and unable to unite the face of repression. Best of all, it links the perspectives of ordinary workers with the difficult choices face by leaders.
A tapestry of voices from the trenches of revolution.......1999-08-03
Winn's book gives a detailed (and Trotskyist) account of a "revolution from below" that transpired during Allende's "revolution from above." It depicts the struggles of textile workers as they grew conscious of their class standing, became unionized and, ultimately, siezed control of the nation's most prominant mill. In the end, however, Winn demonstrates how the Yarur workers and the Popular Unity government imagined different Chilean roads to socialism, and how this divergence brought the social revolution and the Ex-Yarur mill to a tragic conclusion. It is a well-crafted and readible book...a "must" for any student of Latin American history, social revolution or Marxist theory.

GOOD = 5
Opinion.......2006-09-08
I am well satisfied with the service, however, the Gazetteer was dated 2004. Perhaps it hasn't been reissued since 2004.
TENNESSEE ATLAS & GAZETTEER.......2006-08-25
This is not in as much detail as I expected and is just another map-I wish to return it-how do I do that ?
Tennessee Atlas & Gazetteer - Wonderful Resource.......2005-08-09
This Atlas, like all in the DeLorme series of Atlas & Gazetteer references, are wonderful map resources. A wealth of information is included. If anything, the level of detail, coupled with the topographic information, may seem a bit too much at first glace (if you are new to these guides). But if you're willing to spend a bit of time with the maps, you will find these guides to be very useful.
In addition to the maps and the useful indexes and cross-references, these guides include listings or location sources for hiking, camping, fishing, recreation areas, unique natural features (waterfalls, bridges, caverns, natural areas, etc.), bicycle routes, horse trails, etc. And of course, GPS (Lat/Lon) coordinates are printed on each map.
Although the scale of these maps demand it, it would be nice if the guide book dimensions were a bit smaller. At 11" x 15.5", it's a good size book, so it's not quite as easy to stow in the backpack or the motorcycle storage area, etc.
Overall, these are excellent guides for any traveler or outdoor enthusiast.
More than a book of maps........2001-07-09
This is more than a book of maps. It lists state parks, campgrounds, places to canoe, etc. I think it works best when using another book in conjuction with it.
