Book Description

The Bestselling Classic on Love, Loss, and Letting Go

In Necessary Losses, Judith Viorst turns her considerable talents to a serious and far-reaching subject: how we grow and change through the losses that are an inevitable and necessary part of life. She argues persuasively that through the loss of our mothers' protection, the loss of the impossible expectations we bring to relationships, the loss of our younger selves, and the loss of our loved ones through separation and death, we gain deeper perspective, true maturity, and fuller wisdom about life. She has written a book that is both life affirming and life changing.

5 out of 5 stars Good for everyone.......2007-05-15

Sometimes we wonder why life is so damn tough and sad and tragic. Well, this book doesn't help to answer those questions or to make it seem any better, but it does normalize all of those feelings, and it does explore all of the normal and necessary losses people experience in their lives. My therapist recommended it to me when my not-good-for-me boyfriend broke up with me and in turn, facilitated some of my personal growth and taught me to deal with some really hard feelings. I learned that losing him was necessary to my own well-being. This book is great for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-05-12

The title caught my attention and I am so glad I bought it. Its one of the easiest books to read about moving on from losses and helps the reader understand that these losses are indeed, necessary. I have been a therapist for 15 years and have not come across such an engaging and practical book as this one. I myself am a slow reader but got through it in record time. Just do yourself and your loved ones a favor by reading this book!

5 out of 5 stars Necessary losses.......2007-03-20

Great book, but you need to take a break now & then..its heavy going and CAN bring up your "stuff" my therapist recommended it...but even she admits that you need to read it slowly..and maybe a few times. It makes a lotta sense.

5 out of 5 stars Deal With Losses.......2007-02-07

I first bought this book over 20 years ago when I got divorced, and it helped me deal with that event as a loss. Frankly, I hadn't even realized that it even was a loss until I read Viorst's wonderful book. I was able also to reach back and deal with the death of my parents, the losses inherent in growing into middle age, and other things . . . even losing my first girl friend.

Since then I have given this book to numerous friends who have had to deal with losses. I hope that they put the book back into full print as it should be required reading for just about everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Necessary Losses.......2007-01-10

First of all, I am a child and adult psychoanalyst and as it happens Mrs. Viorst (a free-lance writer of, among other things, childrens books) was invited by the institute who trained me in Child Psychoanalysis to be a "lay" student-- meaning not medically professional-to participate in the training which was one of the best at that time in child developmental psychoanalytic theory and practice. It was a committment by this author which spanned several years and a very extensive and intensive experience. this book was a distillation of many elements of that program as seen by this very "clear" competent writer. I have given this book to many people and bought this one to replace one of my daughter's copies. It is an indepth look at psychological developement and especially the mother-child relationship (or Object relationships) and was on the New York Times best seller list for many months. It is still very relevent and well-worth the current new and used price.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Chicken Soup!.......2007-03-09

I love the Chicken Soup series and this book didn't disappoint! I bought 5 of them for Christmas. Four to give as gifts and one for myself. All of my friends loved it too. Would definitley recommend!

2 out of 5 stars My emotional Rollercoaster.......2006-05-22

The stories in Chicken Soup for the Girlfriends Soul took me on a very high and low emotional rollercoaster. The stories made me smile and some made me sad. I didn't particullarily like this book because I think that it was directed to an older audience. I am 15 years old, and some of the stories were about life-long friendships. I couldn't seem to relate to many of the stories. Overall, this book wasn't my favorite, but it wasn't the worst book I have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars I laughed, I cried.......2005-08-02

As with all the Chicken Soup books, I was able to relate to a lot of the stories and I really enjoyed reading the book. I'm giving it to my best friend who is leaving for college and I think she will really enjoy it also.

A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love this book.......2007-05-22

As an 8th grader, I found this series (and this book especially) to be a great read. The characters are great to relate to and I find it fun to imagine you are these people and you are living this amazing life. It is also showing that even though you may have money, you do not always have the perfect life. Even though there were inappropriate material in this book, I didn't think it was so inappropriate that I couldn't handle it. If you are feeling uncomfortable reading this book, it's not hard to skip those pages.

1 out of 5 stars They Have Sex in Dressing Rooms.......2007-01-05

As a parent of a daughter, I was disappointed at the twisted values of the characters. Selfish, hedonistic, material, snobish, I could continue but I'm sure you get the drift. They are NOT the kind of characters I would want my daughter to emulate, and unfortunately many girls do. For those of us that grew up thinking that a Judy Blume novel was a little daring, these Gossip Girl books make Blume look like Blue's Clues in comparison.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2006-10-09

I LOOOOOVE the gossip girl series! They are one of my favorite series out there. I actually have all of them and like them all. This is my favorite of them just because. They leave you at the end with so much suspense and it makes you want to go out and purchase #9. And that's just what I did! The BEST book EVER!!!

1 out of 5 stars PARENTS BEWARE!!!!.......2006-06-30

Parents BEWARE!!! The author uses very strong profanity throughout her "trashy" (my opinion) books. Do we really want our young teens or even young adults reading stuff that is littered with the grand-daddy of all cuss words? I sure hope not, I'd like to think that we still have good morals and values to pass along to the next generation. Check it out for yourself...she uses "f" like it is nothing at all throughout the whole book. Go check it out at any bookstore! I have had her books removed from our school library as well as our local public library.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing Can Keep us Together.......2006-06-25

Another fantastic novel by Cecily! I loved this book. I read til 1:00 every night because I just couldn't put it down! This was definitely one of my favorites because throughout (basicly) the whole book, Serena and Nate were together. Although they're not my favorite couple, it's much better than just having Nate put with some random girl. Truthfully, I would have loved to see more of Blair-less of Serena. I just like Blair the best. I'm actually going to be quite relieved if Jenny isn't in the books anymore. I'm not HER biggest fan! But I really did like this book. Except, the kiss at the end was kind of uncalled for...

Book Description

Parents record every milestone-from the first smile to the first day at school-in a child's baby book for posterity. Thanks to best-selling author Judith Levy, adoptive parents can now express their joy and love for a child in a baby book created especially for them. Our Chosen Child omits the traditional space for recording details about the pregnancy, labor, and delivery, highlighting instead the special preparations adoptive parents make and the excitement and anticipation they feel.In Our Chosen Child, adoptive parents can record family history and all the milestones of childhood through high school graduation. Additionally, Our Chosen Child includes the milestones that an adoptive family achieves. A page entitled "Waiting for You" acknowledges the many steps along the journey to becoming an adoptive family, such as completing a home study and getting references. On the page entitled "When We First Saw You" parents can capture the special moment when they first meet their intended child, whether as a newborn or as a five-year-old. The happy memories of the day the adoption is finalized are recorded on the "Adoption Day" page. Each page features original poetry by Judith Levy, such as this loving dedication: "You had a journey to make, A trip to come through, To parents who were praying, And waiting for you." Judy Pelikan's tender illustrations grace every page, making this book a beautiful keepsake. All adoptive parents will want to complete this treasury of memories for their own "chosen child."

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great to have a baby book for adoption..........2007-03-09

I really like this book. Even though not everything pertains to my child, it is nice being able to have a place to put all of his "Firsts."

I don't mind that it focuses only on us, his adopted family. I have a special "LifeBook" which I created that tells him all about his birth family, including pictures and focuses on them. I think it is great for him to know that he has two families that love him! I also think that it separates everything so that it is not so overwhelming right now, while he is young.

If you want a great way to share your child's birthfamily information, I would highly recommend buying "LifeBooks Creating a Treasure for the Adopted Child" by Beth O'Malley, MEd. It is a great help in not only creating a LifeBook, but also gives you ideas on how to explain to your child difficult things about his/her adoption.

1 out of 5 stars We returned this item.......2006-11-07

We found this way too 'cute-sy' for our taste.
We much preferred "This is Me", which allowed for much more flexibility, as it's a binder. And it was not so cute-sy.

5 out of 5 stars A good Baby Book for Adoptions.......2006-07-03

I was placed with my son when he was 22 months old. While this book is geared more toward infant adoption (wanting a lot of firsts as a baby book does) I am using it for his firsts with us. I have also asked his prior placement if they can fill in the information I don't have. It has pages for a naming Ceremony (I just wrote about them name we chose and why) My favorite pages are the ones where youput pictures of "Others who love you" I would recommend this book to any adoptive mom/dad and you can alter as you need it.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I'd hoped for..........2006-06-07

This book, while obviously well-intentioned, leaves too much unsaid in the life of a child who joins a family through adoption, in my opinion. There's no space for including the child's biological roots or specifics about their birth family, but only a vague "other people who love you" page, for example.

I didn't feel comfortable using it OR giving it as a gift, so it sits in a box. I'll create my own lifebooks.

5 out of 5 stars Missing Critical Pieces for Adoptees.......2006-04-28

I have struggled over posting this review---so here goes. 50 year ago my parents gave me a baby adoption book called" The Chosen Child". It was sweet but never talked about having a birth family.

Here we are in 2006 and adopted kids are getting the same message with the latest " Our Chosen Child". Part of their history--their birth history/birth parents---gets written off. Not mentioned. Not discussed. Judy, wish you had done your homework.

On a more positive note--"Our Chosen Child" works very well for everyday life. Like a typical baby/child book. But not helpful for adopted kids and their families. Sorry. Beth O'Malley

Book Description

At ages nineteen and twenty-two, respectively, Jason Kingsley and Mitchell Levitz shared their innermost thoughts, feelings, hopes, and dreams, their lifelong friendship—and their experiences growing up with Down syndrome. Their frank discussion of what mattered most in their lives—careers, friendships, school, sex, marriage, finances, politics, and independence—earned Count Us In numerous national awards, including the EDI Award from the National Easter Seal Society. More important, their wit, intelligence, candor, and charm made a powerful and inspirational statement about the full potential of people with developmental disabilities, challenging prevailing stereotypes.

Now, thirteen years later, the authors discuss their lives since then—milestones and challenges, developments expected and unexpected—in a new afterword.

5 out of 5 stars very educational .......2007-05-06

i think this book should go to individuals to learn about issues that might be dealing with. these two advocates have learned a lot and how their parents has taught them i think i definitively recommend this book to go to many libraries and bookstores so that other men can learn how to do things on their own just like any other men. i am a women and i have down syndrome to i have read this it made me realize that having down syndrome is a celebration

3 out of 5 stars As a Mom, I Couldn't Relate.......2006-07-23

I read this when my son was a baby and the book was new. I couldn't relate to ANYTHING about these boys lives. As a woman, I just couldn't relate to their male view of the world. We did not share any interests either. This book might be more appreciated by an adult male relative, professional, or family friend, but I wouldn't recommend it for a teen. It is nice that these two boys with DS are so capable, but their book would be more interesting for someone that shared their viewpoint and/or interests. If you are a woman, read something more uplifting.

5 out of 5 stars Count Us In by Jason Kingsley, & Mitchell Levitz.......2003-06-05

This is a book written in their own words by two young men who have Down's Syndrome. They share the ups and down's of their lives . Although my son is only nine, I found this book very helpful because it gave me some preview of things to come. Because the book was written in the boys' own words, it gives a unique picture into the minds and lives of older children with Down syndrome. It also gave some insight into familiar problems, as well as some events that were unique to these boys who authored the book. I found myself wishing that my own son had a close friend to help guide him through the ups and downs that await him in his teenage years. Then I realised that I could actively seek out peers for him to become friendly with at my local Down syndrome chapter, and maybe I could find some friends that he could become close with in a similar fashion to the authors of this book. I highly recommend this book to all parents, caregivers, teachers and other professionals who work with children who have disabliities similar to Down Syndrome, because the experiences of these boys could cover a broad spectrum of disabilities, not only Down Syndrome. So many books are written from an outsider's prespective. This book comes straight from the sourcel.

I first read this book when my son with Down Syndrome was very young. It was extremely encouraging to me to read the very complex and interesting thoughts of two adult men who have Down Syndrome. I wish all teachers would read this book. I think any parent with a child who has Down Syndrome, especially a very young one, would benefit from reading this book. I really fell in love with Jason and Mitchell.

Book Description

Man Up! is a hard hitting, hig, introspective look into what the Black community must do to save itself. Finally, a voice speaks to the complex relationship between personal and community responsibility.

Steve Perry effectively calls to task organizations such as the NAACP and the Black church as well as talking heads like Michael Eric Dyson and Cornell West for their role in the retardation of the Black community. Ultimately Man Up! is about the simple solutions offered in each chapter.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful Book! Now, we need action........2007-09-05

I confess, I'm not much of a book worm, I tend to do most of my reading on-line -- This book, I read in two days!
The facts are clear; we in the black community are in crisis! My heart aches, wondering how we will correct the many issues that plague us.
Mr. Perry does an expert, incredibly honest job at pointing out both the issues and providing salient solutions.
It truly is up to us in the Black community to help ourselves. No more pointing fingers; no more relying on the same old broken methods of the past.
Well, this was supposed to be a book review. Bottom line, EVERY SINGLE black person
Should read take to heart the simple, but profound methods offered in this book. Well done Mr. Perry, keep up the important efforts.

5 out of 5 stars Thank god someone gets it........2007-08-23

I appreciate your efforts, but please don't say no one's coming. The government has tried for years! The system has been trying to help blacks to the detriment of whites for as long as I can remember (I was denied employment at GM in 1984 due to my white skin. In spite of the fact my father was so poor he lived in a cabin with an outhouse and starved more than he ate. He worked two jobs as stock clerk and janitor to make ends meet).

I heard Steve Perry on CNN and couldn't agree more about Micheal Vick. Want the hell is the NAACP doing defending a man making 160 million dollars and killing dogs. They continue to discredit themselves acting as savior for the privileged whom should be held to a higher level of responsibility.

5 out of 5 stars A Manifesto for Manhood .......2007-05-14

Man Up! will become required reading for black Americans (young & old) in the sphere of my influence. This book delivers truth, problems, realities, and common sense solutions to the ills of the ebony community. Where did the brother find the wisdom, inspiration, and most of all the courage to say what needs to be said? We are destroying ourselves and must take corrective action now. This book is a manifesto and valuable first steps reading to a positive living in the right direction.

5 out of 5 stars perfect.......2007-05-01

loved this book. easy read, short and to the point. this is exactly what our community needs right now, I don't know why this man isn't getting the national recognition he deserves.

4 out of 5 stars Man UP.......2007-01-06

I enjoyed this book, it does tell it like it is, no ifs ands or buts. It is time folks stopped blaming other folks, and took some responsibility on, and stepped up. We are out here, together, and we need to man up. NOBODY is coming to save us. The many voices that claim to speak for us, don't, their interests are not my interests, and more than likely not yours either. A book like this and many others like it needs far wider dissemination that it is getting. Enough of the sound bite mentality, self pity. Get up, stand up, and learn and do for yourselves.

Book Description

We've heard from the parents and stepparents. We've heard from the child psychologists and family counselors. Now let the children speak.

Here are the wise words of ten children who grew up in stepfamilies. They are young enough to remember the experience well and old enough to have learned from it. They not only offer their poignant stories, but they add advice specifically marked for parents, stepparents, and even stepchildren. They come from different races, economic levels and from various parts of the country, but all of their stories reverberate with truth and a desire to help others.

The author, a parent and stepparent herself, knew the right questions to ask and knew how to help them translate their sometimes painful experience into lessons from which all of us can learn.

5 out of 5 stars Always from the other side.......2007-02-14

While this book is well conceived, researched, written, and is an interesting concept, I found it tiresome to hear again the grievances from the stepchildren's side. Being a stepchild and a stepmother, I can appreciate the difficulties from both sides, however it always seems to end up being about the stepchildren, their plight, their sensitive feelings, and what we can all do to cushion their fragility. Little thought or consideration being given for the 'dreaded' stepmother/father. It would have been a nice adjunct to have an equal number of stepparents interviewed to give their view, advice, and insights.

5 out of 5 stars Step Into the Children's Shoes.......2005-04-26

What a powerful and much-needed resource for stepfamilies! So many stepfamily issues can be prevented or solved if the adults involved will do their best to "Step Into the Children's Shoes." Many thanks to Susan Philips for her work in bringing this important book to life. As much as I try to step into all my children's shoes and remain sensitive to their feelings on this complicated stepfamily journey, her book opened my eyes further and gave me new insights. What a gift that through Stepchildren Speak we can learn from the voices of grown-up stepchildren who have shared their stories, their struggles, their triumphs and their advice, so that we might all be better parents and stepparents NOW.

4 out of 5 stars What Stepchildren Really Think.......2005-01-23

If you've ever wondered what stepchildren truly think about their experiences growing up in a stepfamily, then you need to check out Stepchildren Speak: Ten Grown-Up Stepchildren Teach Us How to Build Healthy Stepfamilies. Author Susan Phillips profiles ten people in their late twenties and early thirties who grew up in stepfamilies. The interviewees describe how it feels to juggle in between households and to navigate homes with different values. This book does not spare any punches - it looks at stepfamilies with honesty - in both their bad and good aspects. In some cases the interviewees describe selfish and even abusive behavior from their guardians. In others they talk about positive relationships with siblings and parental figures, the merits of learning how to accept other people's differences, and talents they discovered because of the influence of a stepparent. Drawing on their own experiences, the interviewees offer advice to stepparents and stepchildren.

5 out of 5 stars Stepchildren speak.......2005-01-17

Stepchildren Speak competently answers a grave need of our families today. Straight "from the horse's mouth," so to speak, this book provides an intimate, caring view into those who have walked this path -- and survived. A "must read" for anyone contemplating marriage to one with children.

5 out of 5 stars from the mouths of babes.......2004-12-02

How brilliant and selfless of Susan Philips to let the stepchildren give advice and insight into stepparenting, rather than put it in her own words. The experiences that these ten stepchildren share are diverse, but the commonality of feelings are strikingly similiar. For anyone who is in the midst of stepparenting, or about to embark on this journey, I would strongly recommend that they read this heartfelt book.

Book Description

It is the year 2007.

The world has been wiped out by a deadly plague that killed all the adults. Without them, children perished of hunger and disease. No more people, no more electricity, no more civilization -- just mildewed houses, overgrown yards, and abandoned cars. Yet on a highway strip outside a small town in Florida, the words "We're Still Here" are painted in letters big enough to be seen from an airplane -- although no planes ever cross the empty sky.

Miraculously, seven children have survived among the ruins. They cannot remember their names, their families, or much else from the Before Time. But they have forged a new family, with new names: Mommy, Hunter, Teacher, Action Figure, Teddy Bear, Baby, and Doll.

They must face each day with enough hope to endure and the strength to realize that there may be nothing out there worth living for. Then one day, a new kid shows up on their doorstep and changes everything. He invites them to join him on a dangerous journey to Washington, to find a man called President if he's still alive -- and seek the answers to the mystery at the heart of the Fire-us.

In this first book of the Fire-us Trilogy, Jennifer Armstrong and Nancy Butcher weave a compelling post-apocalyptic tale, luring readers into a world that is inventive enough to intrigue, yet true enough to believe.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping and Inspired.......2007-08-13

As an adult who loves children's fantasy and survival novels, this was a real page-turner. It sounds morbid to say I 'enjoyed' the book, but I don't think that was the author's intent. I felt a gloom and sense of foreboding dread the entire time. It's gritty, real, and very immersing, even heartbreaking at times to consider the story of these kids and how they would grow and develop without adults in the world. It was reminiscent of Lord of the Flies and Red Dawn, with a little bit of Stephen King's 'The Stand' thrown in for good measure, but it wasn't derivative of any of these.
I must also say that the style of writing was very different and engaging - these two authors have a great voice, style, and the prose flows right along - impressive without being obtrusive. I'm very excited about reading the rest of the series.

3 out of 5 stars Fire-Us Trilogy - Probably not a good pick for juveniles.......2006-11-20

I just finished reading these which I picked up at our local library in the juvenile section in the mix with books by Beverly Cleary, Hans Christian Anderson and the like. These books are not in the same catagory as these classics.

This is a riveting, adventure, survival series featuring fourteen year olds as the main characters, all of whom have suffered mental illnesses from the trauma of surviving a viral illness that wiped out nearly every human being on earth. Disturbing images are described in gut-wrenching detail of the children walking through the piles of skeletons of the victims of this global disaster. It highlights their struggles to retain a shred of sanity in overwhelming circumstances. Angerman, the boy who comes onto the scene in the first book to lead the children north, is severely disturbed and carries a mutilated and dismembered manikin around that speaks to him in his mind and causes him to go out of control.

The story paints an ugly portrait of bible believers. The surviving adults, individually named after Christian Bible verses, turn out to be the perpetrators of the viral pestilence that has destroyed the human race. Led by the crazed president of the US, these "keepers of the flame" quote endless bible verses and engage in forced marriage, child rape and infanticide by fire. The story ends with a youth murder/suicide. Impressionable children may have an unreasonable fear of manikins and be suspicious of their church, pastors or Christians after reading this book. I strongly recommend parental guidance for the young juvenile readers who may pick these up.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-10-06

I think you should really read this book it was on e the best survival books i have ever read. "It is the year 2007 five years after a great plague swept the Earth". only a couple kids and adults survived seperated they strugle to survive they live in small groups scavenging for food and other needful things. but when a town runs out of food a group of kids mave to where ever they can find it.

5 out of 5 stars The five years if Lonelyness and Torture.......2006-04-24

In the first year of Fire-Us, there was a disease that started and was said to have killed all of the grown ups on the planet. Now for the last five years Mommy, Teacher, Hunter, Action Figure, Baby, and Teddy Bear have been living together in the cold dark town. The reason they are called these odd names is because they don't remember their names from being enclosed for so long. When a man named Angerman comes to their town, they think he's an alien and don't trust him too much. Angerman is going to be going onto his trip to Washington DC and bring them with him to find a man called President to speak to him about rescue efforts. But the only thing is, Mommy hasn't left the house in five years. Will she leave the house? Will they finally reach Washington If you want to find out these questions, you must read this fantastic book.

I thought that this book started out boring like how mommy hasn't left the house for five years and how all of the characters are surviving. As the book progresses, it gets more into focus and gets more exiting. I liked the part when they caught the wild children that thought they were a dog and a cat.

I think that the emotional people would like this book the most because of all the people that died; it's just a really sad book. For the most part, it is a very adventurous book that I advise everyone to read. If you have read this book already, I would read the second book.

5 out of 5 stars Creepy and Fascinating.......2006-03-16

This is a sci-fi novel about the end of the world. Every single adult on the planet died. THere are a couple of kids living in a house alone. So begins the Fire-Us trilogy, fascinating, scary, and intriguing.

The story is really interesting - I mean slap in your face, give-me-more, I LOVE THIS intersting. A couple of the images were really disturbing, though, like the fact that Hunter had to move the skeletons out of his way at the supermarket. The kids in the story are fascinating, and the Teacher's scarpbook-thing was so . . . wierd that it was actually kind of scary.

Then Angerman is introduced. He's really messed up, but I get the idea that he knows something about the virus (Fire-us) that the others don't. This makes him an amazing character, and even if you don't like the story its worth reading the sequel just to find out what happens to him and his battered dummy.

I really love this series, though some of the descriptions might be a little too much for younger readers. Well worth anyone who is into sci-fi and apocalypse, as I was at the time.

P.S. I read this book five months ago and I still remember all of the characters and their names and quirks. Talk about powerful writing!
