Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-10-17

I am only half way through the 1st book in the series but WOW! The first few chapters are spent developing the characters. I have quickly found myself not wanting to put the book down. I can hardly wait to see how the story unfolds. It is wonderful how the author incorporates Christian themes within a fiction book.

Another positive is that I think that this series would interest my husband as well. It doesn't seem to be written specifically for one sex or the other.

5 out of 5 stars Cant Put it Down!!!.......2007-10-15

This series is one you will nto only not be able to put down ( buy the set... you dont want to have to wait for the next book to arrive) But its one that will touch your heart down to the deepest parts. I like these books becasue even though they are Christian Romances they are books that Anyone of any religion can enjoy. My Husbund and I both read them and provided copies for many friends of ours!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing story!.......2007-10-07

An amazing story that brings you back to the foundation of your faith, as they did for me. I laughed, cried, and rejoiced with the characters as they went through their trials and tribulations. Kudos to Francine Rivers for bringing a remarkable story for generations to come!

5 out of 5 stars an insight into 1st century Christians.......2007-08-27

This series was so great. Not only does it keep your attention in an entertaining way but it makes you think more about what it was like for 1st century Christians.

5 out of 5 stars Great christian fiction........2007-08-24

Didn't get a lot done while reading this book, couldn't put it down. The story draws you in and you also learn alot about this time, the Roman Empire and the plight of their conquered peoples. Can be a little gruesome in parts. Highly recommend.

Book Description

Retitled from Nations in Darkness, this classic continues its exploration of the relationship triangle of three superpowers: China, Russia, and the United States. Stoessinger frames the dynamics of these constantly-evolving linkages in terms of how each perceives the others. This edition significantly reworks material on the former Soviet Union. Stoessinger chronicles the undoing of the Soviet Union and relates its ongoing efforts at the establishing of a true democracy while also reexamining China's "Old Guard" and speculating on the emergence of new forces and new directions there.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars More Information Than You Can Handle.......2006-03-06

I read Stoessinger's book for an International Relations course at college. Though Sotessinger was less "wordy" than other authors, he certainly packed this book full of information. Though under 400 pages, this book contained more information, anecdotes, and facts than the rest of my texts combined. In fact, my only criticism of this book is that it is easy to get bogged down in the details. However, I would recommend this strongly to anyone interested in, or studying, US relations with China and Russia.

3 out of 5 stars Plethora of information!.......2000-03-28

This work was a lifesaver! Stoessinger presents important information that I was unable to find in any other book located in the local university library. This book, which is used by many universities as a text book was extremely useful in my research studies of American foreign relations with China and Russia. Stoessinger I thank you!

Has Keisha found happiness at last?

In her senior year, things are finally looking a little brighter for Keisha. Still haunted by the suicide of her ex-boyfriend, Andy, she finds comfort in the attentions of the new track coach, twenty-three-year-old Jonathan Hathaway, the principal's son. How can Keisha not be swept off her feet by a tall, dark, handsome "lemon drop wrapped in licorice" who treats her like a woman, not a girl?

But suddenly this intoxicating relationship takes a frightening turn, and Keisha is once again plunged into the darkness she's fought so hard to escape. Will Keisha ever be able to find her way back into the light?

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars One mother's opinion.......2007-08-27

My teenager and I just finished reading this book as a summer reading requirement for school. We both agreed that it was one of the worst books we had ever read. The conversations were silly, the word "dude" was said at least 3 dozen times (who says "dude" anymore anyway?) and the situations were melodramatic to say the least. We both agree there are much better options out there for high school students and our hope is that the English teacher who chose this for class won't require any more from this author.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!.......2006-05-29

This book is continuation of Tears of a Tiger. Keisha was Andy's girlfriend and now left with rest of her friends Ronda, Tyrone, BJ, Gerald, and Leon to survive without out their two friends Andy and Rob, who both died. Now in her senior year Keisha is selected class president and is having the best year. The principal's 23-year-old son is the new track coach and he has his eye on Keisha. Slowly Keisha begins to find comfort in 23-year-old Jonathan and starts going out with him. Soon the relationship takes a wrong turns when Jonathan takes Keisha to his apartment and tries to rape and kill her with his jack knife.
Sharon M. Draper is the greatest well-known writer that I know. I love his style of writing and how she brings her characters to live. Every book she ever made is great and I can't wait til she makes more.

5 out of 5 stars Painfully Wonderful.......2006-02-25

There is pain in this book that you hope no one goes through. It follows Keisha after the death of her boyfriend, which is one thing she could've done without and then the near-rape she encounters. (Read TEARS OF A TIGER first.)

This book makes you wonder about the amount of suffering in the modern black community; does Draper portray it as harsher than it really is, or do more people than we want to think live these kind of lives?

This book is more than fiction. It is an epic.

5 out of 5 stars Christian's Review.......2006-01-18

In the book a girl named Keisha has just lost her boyfriend. Andy killed himself because he and his best friends Rob, Tyrone, and B.J were in a car accident. Rob was the only one that didn't make it out of the car and he burned to death. Andy felt that it was his fault so he walked around with all this on his shoulders until he killed himself. Keisha had just broken up with Andy because of all his problems. That summer Keisha took Andy's little brother with her to the cookout. The cookout was something that the high school does every year and the students come and bring their little brothers and sisters. This summer, Keisha saw a guy that she thought was hot, so the summer passed and the new school year came. When she saw him, she acted as if she hadn't noticed him, but she did and she really liked him. At the same time, Leon liked her but she really had not paid any attion to that until one day she gave him a ride home and his dad started to say all this embracing stuff. So the conflict is she has to choose a boy (Leon) or a man (Jonathan).
I chose this book because I read the first book and I liked it, so I just continued to read them. No one recommended it to me but when I first started everyone would say that's a good book. I chose the book because I read the back. I like the author cause she knows how to express her feelings.
I would recommend this book to any one in high school and middle school. This book is really good but at first it is boring but it gets good in the middle I feel as though it gets good and you can relate to the emotion. It was easy to read cause she is just out in the open. She doesn't make things that are simple so confusing. The end was good. I was satisfied with the resolution.

4 out of 5 stars My daughter liked it.......2005-12-15

My teenage daughter liked the book. Some of the dialogue was a little difficult to follow in certain places, but all in all she said she could really identify with the setting and situations. She liked it so much she wanted to read other books by her - so we ordered "Julio and Romiette". She really loved that one and shared it with her girlfriends who are still passing it around!

The R.A Salvatore books for the Drow series is the first books i ever pick up and read. Me not being a reader thought i would never sit a read a book on its entirity, well i was wrong. since the very fist books i just kept reading. Salvatore puts the material in such a vivid way that you get involve in the story and you feel each character and their way of life since i started i read 9 books and working on my ten book. Thats how great the books are i Would recomend to everyone but specially to those people who think they will never read. Last i would like to say i hope that you soon be enjoying the books They're Greatness all aroundLegacy of the Drow Gift Set: The Legacy, Starless Night, Siege of Darkness, and Passage to Dawn (Forgotten Realms: Legacy of the Drow)

5 out of 5 stars Legacy of the Drow.......2007-05-31

"As an old school gamer I dislike so many things that occur in these books, but this is some of the best sword & sorcery reading you will find. This is the 2nd or 3rd trilogy dealing with these characters. The imagination that went into creating the Ecology of the twisted society of the underdark is simply mind blowing."

5 out of 5 stars Drow Gift Set.......2007-01-14

I was pleased at the condition of my order, and the speed which it reached me.

5 out of 5 stars Drizzt.......2003-11-05

I'm guessing most people who are thinking of buying this are already familiar with the author, or perhaps have already read all four books.

If you haven't, then here's what you need to know. These four books center around a good-aligned drow elf named Drizzt, who is now wandering the surface of Faerun. If you've never read about Drizzt before, be advised that these four books are not first in chronological order of Drizzt's life; you'll be given some backstory to understand who Drizzt is, but you'll also know pretty much everything that happened in all the earlier novels, which may lessen your enjoyment of them when you eventually read them. I say "when" rather than "if" because it seems to me that if you approach these novels without an anti-Drizzt or anti-Salvatore mindset, you will love them, and you will go buy all the others.

I'm not going to write out a play-by-play of events in the book, since you can look them each up individually and get plenty of information from other posters. I give these 4 books a total of 5 stars; some are better than others, but none rank below a 3.

As a sidenote, if you are buying this as a gift for someone, you might want to know that they are set in the Forgotten Realms, which is a unique world, NOT a generic fantasy world. I would not purchase this set as a gift for someone unless I already knew that they were familiar with the Forgotten Realms world. It's too complex a place to approach in the middle of a series without understanding the world at least to some degree.

4 out of 5 stars What A Way to Join the Mile High Club..........2006-08-25

From the Back Cover - A troubled Captain Cathering Phillips plans for this flight to Rome to be her last in the employ of Orbis Airlines. Unfulfilled by her job and adrift in her personal life, the only solution she sees is to quit - to run away - as she has done in the past. But a band of terrorist hijackers, as well as a gutsy young flight attendant Rebecca Hanson, throw a wrench into Catherine's plans. The pilot is forced to come to terms with the demons of her past even as she struggles to save th crippled aircraft and the lives of all aboard. - End of Back Cover Text

I first read the Orbis Airlines series by Belle Reilly a few years ago, and recently decided to enjoy it again. `Darkness Before the Dawn' is the first in the Uber series and is an enjoyable, slow-paced read about two intriguing women who fall in love against the odds. Airline pilot Captain Catherine Phillips has had it with her job. Submitting her resignation, she prepares to fly her last assignment to Rome and back. Phillips struggles with guilt borne of family problems and her actions during Operation Desert Storm, and seems to run away from everything in her life. She's not at all friendly, but demands the utmost professionalism from her flight crew. In walks young flight attendant Rebecca Hanson. Becky is a people person. Initially intimidated by the aloof pilot, Becky begins to see and appreciate the woman beneath the icy exterior.

Becky and Kate are violently thrown together as they struggle to save their aircraft from a group of terrorists who have taken over the plane. They struggle through captivity and near-death injury, as their tentative relationship begins to blossom.

The book takes place mostly over a plane flight from the US to Europe, so the time frame is less than 12 hours or so. It's a little far-fetched that these two very different women would feel affection for each other so quickly, but the tragedy surrounding the flight makes it more believable. The romantic parts of the book are at a G level, mostly because the women never even kiss. However, their thoughts and feelings are very evident to the reader. Reilly does a nice job leaving the story open to the sequel, `Roman Holiday.'

Recommended if you're into action books and don't mind missing the physical relationship between the main characters.

    4 out of 5 stars No-fear Flying.......2005-06-26

This book ended any nervousness I had about flying (which was admittedly never a full-blown fear...just an uneasiness), I guess by humanizing the pilots and what they can overcome. A decent story, even if you're waiting the whole time for character interaction. Definitely a set-up book, but a worthy read, nonetheless. Also, I'd probably only give it three stars (but can't figure out how to edit it).

    1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2005-03-11

The author is very knowledgable about the art of flying, and the technical aspects of the flight were good, but the dialogue just did not with the situations in my opinion, there was no romance, and Catherine Phillips the captain, and Becky her "intended" were just not endearing characters.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but where is the rest of it.......2002-10-16

I know this is a lead-in to Roman Holiday. However, I agree with the earlier reviewer who said she thinks Reilley wrote a long story and then split it up. I had thought this book dealt with the beginning of Kate and Becky's relationship. And in a way it does, if you just think of the beginning as "how they met." However, Becky is barely in this book - no more than any other character except Kate. This book is reported to be a romance, but there is no romance in it. Kate and Becky barely talk! It also seems things work out too well; the highjackers give up too easily. There is no suspense.
All in all, the book is a good lead-in, but not a good book on its own.

    5 out of 5 stars Great story.......2001-08-20

This was a great story, but you have to know that it's the setup for the next book. The story here of the hijacking and what happens is very believeable and fast paced. It also provides a good introduction to the characters of Kate and Becky. After you finish this, you need to read Roman Holiday to see where their relationship goes. From the way that one flows into the other, I would almost suspect that Belle Reilly wrote one long book that she decided to split into two. Both of them make great reads though.

5 out of 5 stars Buy the best, from the best.......2000-09-16

Tim Hansel is one of the most accomplished Christain authors of our time. His books are "real" and come from his personal pain and life experiences. Reading one of Tim's books is like looking inside his life and understanding how he has turned to God to find answers regarding "Joy in spite of circumstances."

I find all of his books to be exceptional, life guides.

They are particularly adaptive to Sunday School and Bible Study material. They elicit a lot of interest and response.

    Thanks for carrying his books

4 out of 5 stars Joy in the midst of lonliness.......2000-06-17

Tim Hansel is a an author who understands what its like to feel alone. For me it was an amazing gift to hear that you can feel alone in the midst of being with people. Here was a famous author and speaker talking about how alone he felt in the midst of a career that most would find successfull and full of ministry. After reading his previous books, this was the first book that allowing me to know that Tim didn't have it all figured out. That he struggled just like the rest of us. Essentially, that he was human. So, this book is for the person that is alot like him. Seeking to grow with the Lord, seeking to work through pain, and seeking to be all that God wants us to be. I have not been this motivated by a book since "You've got to keep dancing" You see we all need to be reminded that feeling alone is ok. That even in the midst of life with thousands of people around you will feel alone. This is a must read book for anyone in ministry or anyone that has ever given, given, given and yet still felt empty and alone.

    Episodes:

NOTE: The following 11-part series (starting with #2) deals with Satan's attacks on Odyssey. Those attacks manifest themselves in ways ranging from stolen bicycles to vandalism to a bomb exploding at Whit's End. While these things are handled carefully and are integral to the plot, the series still gets extremely intense in places, and is therefore not recommended nor intended for younger listeners.

A Little Credit, Please (episode #323 / Theme: Stewardship / Scripture Reference: Luke 16:10-12). Connie gets her first credit card.

Small Fires, Little Pools (episode #324). Trouble starts happening in Odyssey. Sam and Lucy's bikes are stolen.

Angels Unaware (episode #325). Someone is assisting Sam and Lucy retrieve their bikes back but who?

Gathering Thunder (episode #326). Lucy and Connie have been nabbed by "The Israelites".

Moving Targets (episode #327). Jack resigns from Whit's End, Jason takes over. Tom Riley is accused of something bad and a campaign to recall him as mayor.

Hard Losses (episode #328). The campaign against Tom continues and the return of Richard Maxwell.

The Return (episode #329). The City council closes down Whit's End.

The Time Has Come (episode #330 / Theme: Salvation). Eugene becomes a Christian and accepts Jesus Christ.

Checkmate * (episode #331). Lucy is taken by the Bones of Wrath.

Another Chance * (episode #332). Richard Maxwell is in a coma.

The Last Resort * (episode #333). The contents of what is under Whit's End is revealed. Tom finally realizes what Richard has done for him.

The Final Conflict * (episode #334). An explosion happens and Jack and Blackgaard is involved. One makes it alive and one does not.

    * Parental preview is encouraged.

REVIEW: The following episodes were the most intense "to be continued" Adventure in Odyssey episodes I have ever listened to. Every day, I couldn't wait for the next episode because it was that good. It was interesting to see the city of Odyssey have so much criminal activity and see the characters be placed in tough situations. This audio set comes highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Darkness Before Dawn.......2004-10-22

this is the best A.I.O set ever. this set is very deep and makes for good discussion in summary: there is an out break of vandalism in odyssey. everyone thinks the bones of wrath are behind it. the church is hit. whits end is hit. jack has more weird dreames. jason gets an inspector to investigate the under- ground railroad tunnel under whits end. What he gets is the wicked Philip Glossman. Glossman has a scandal to have a recal election to kick tom out of office. we learn that Dr. Blackgaard is behind it. in " the return" dr. Blackgaard returns to odyssey to announce his candidacy for the election. Richard maxwell returns to odyssey to stop Blackgaard. maxwell finds out about the Dr's true plan: BLOW UP WHITS END!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

everyone is drawn into the final conflict. jason and the police close in on blackgaard. Eugene uses his newfound faith in Jesus.
Bernard and the isrialites catch Jellyfish, and Glossman. Jack meets Blackgaard in the tunnel. In a touching and amazing end Jack tries to stop Blackgaard, and redeem Blackgaards soul.
Blackgaard makes the assumption that he couldnt turn from his wicked ways and exept Christ.Blackgaard blows up the tunnel and dies, Jack (by his faith in God) is saved from the blast. it is a happy ending for everyone.

this set is amazing. if you are new to the series listen to this it has action, adventure, and amazing tales of faith>

5 out of 5 stars Terrific - and it has depth.......2003-02-28

Those who have experienced the conclusion of the "Novacom Saga" recently have heard Adventures in Odyssey at it's best, but if absolute pure suspence is what you want, then I recommend this series. It has been building for a long time, every so often Dr. Regis Blackgaard would appear on the horizon, dark and sinister, first in Odyssey with his own "amusement house" for kids (and a nefarious effort to steal a top secret computer program from Mr. Whittaker-thwarted by Richard Maxwell who makes another appearance in this album)and then in Chicago where he actually kidnapped Connie, and finally in "A Name Not a Number" when he returned to Odyssey.

This album presents the climax of his plans, and there are enough twists and turns to leave you breathless for weeks...and the amount of depth is breathtaking, with the story functioning on several levels, from Eugene's own personal struggles, to the Tom Riley-Richard Maxwell problem, to the conflict of Jason and Jack over "The Isrealits".not to mention the recall! The web gets ever wider. So buy this album and immerse yourself in a story that is both very complicated, and at the same time, equally compelling. You won't be dissapointed!

5 out of 5 stars Darkness before Dawn.......2000-04-20

Episodes on this miniseries include A little credit please, Small fires little pools, Angels unaware, gathering thunder, moving targets, hard losses, the return, the time has come, checkmate, another chance, the last resort and the final conflict. This is a very exciting series with each episode ending on a cliff hanger. It was very hard to stop listening to do other things. An excellent buy for children and adults alike.

5 out of 5 stars The best odyssey collection yet!.......1999-09-21

These tapes are full of reunions from MR Glossman to Richard maxwell to DR.Blagerd. it also includes Eugene becuming a christian. It's the best hands down

    Book Description

Drawn from real life and brimming with wisdom, this collection of original stories combines the inspiration of Chicken Soup for the Soul, the charm of Life’s Little Instruction Book, and the immediacy of Tuesdays with Morrie.
What is the most precious gift we can leave to the next generation? For Peter Shockey and Stowe D. Shockey, financial security, happy memories of loving times, and an understanding of what constitutes a well-lived life provided a starting point for thinking about their own legacy. But they also wanted to be sure that the wisdom they gained in their lifetime would be shared with their friends, family, and future generations. In Journey of Light they offer the ultimate lessons of their own lives and gems of wisdom gathered from people whose lives influenced them along the way. The stories in Journey of Light encompass the full spectrum of human experience. Built on the struggles of Stowe's own Dickens-style childhood, they recount moments of light and dark, joy and frustration, pain and recovery. What unites them is the realization that the journey through life is lit by the Light of God. Interviews with people who have returned from near-death experiences reveal a common phenomenon that many of them refer to as the ripple effect. Upon seeing their lives “flash before their eyes,” they understood that their actions, like ripples from a pebble cast into a pond, radiated out to touch the lives of those closest to them. Their stories and those of others in Journey of Light illustrate the interconnections between individual lives and show that one person’s decision to share God’s Light can help and heal countless others.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing journey with the Holy Spirit's guidance.......2007-03-17

The Journey of Light allows us to see how the Holy Spirit touched the lives of Peter and Stowe Shockey. I found myself reading a chapter - stopping and praying for both of them and then continuing on to the next chapte.

We can believe through their sharing that God will touch us in the same way. Through difficult times and good times HE is always there guiding, protecting and changing. Their experiences remind us God is with us.

Stowe encourages us not to save God up for only the difficult times. She shows us through her experiences that we never let our soul disintegrate because of a tragedy. From the heart of a young mother you hear the cry of her heart say "The fact that I have consciously experienced His Living Spirit --- is enough proof for me to become a follower of Jesus for my entire life time."

Thank you Stowe and Peter for reminding us that "God is light and in HIM there is no darkness at all." Their words encourage me that he touched and changed their lives forever through the Holy Spirit and through Faith I can believe that for me. This is an inspiring word from God - using two vessels to reach us. God bless the Shockey family more and more each day.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing piece of historical fiction!.......2006-06-13

Costain has a real talent for putting a little bit of everything into his books... The Darkness and the Dawn is a prime example of this. It has daring escapes, battles, romance, horse races, and a court scene. This book also has a tyrant, an emperor, a princess, and a royal family. It's a book that should be counted among the classics...even though the author is far above them.
I encourage you to give this, and other Costain books a try. I think you'll be very surprised.

3 out of 5 stars a superlative novel about attila the hun.......2000-06-15

the magic of this book does not depend on the plot but on the crisp dialogue , the tense succession of episodes , the kaleidoscopic change of scenes ! costain at his best - setting his scene with high competence and keeps his plot at the bubbling point to the end...
