Book Description

The international bestseller How Clean Is Your House? is a new kind of cleaning book—full-color, hilarious, and fun. Packed with trade secrets and inventive cleaning solutions, it goes through the house room by room, offering do's and don'ts, step-by- steps, and before-and-after “grime scene” photographs.

Kim Woodburn and Aggie MacKenzie are known as “the queens of clean” from Lifetime Television and The Oprah Winfrey Show. Tips include:
• Use a banana peel to dust plants; the dust clings to the skin and the juice nourishes the leaves
• Leave laundry detergent to soak in your bathtub overnight—the tub will gleam in the morning (no scrubbing required)
• To loosen dirt and grease inside the microwave, put a few slices of lemon in an uncovered bowl of water and cook on high for 3 minutes.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-10-14

I love the show and was disappointed that Lifetime no longer shows it but BBC still doesn
The book is great. I have learned a few things that I have never seen on the show.

5 out of 5 stars Just makes you want to get up and clean something! .......2007-10-02

Kim Woodburn and Aggie MacKenzie tackle some of the messiest houses on two continents, and they do it with humor and style. Just because you're elbow deep in muck is no reason not to look elegant! (I especially like their glamorously trimmed rubber gloves.)

This terrific companion book to the TV series, "How Clean Is Your House," isn't a comprehensive guide on how to clean anything and everything. It's just a fun little book with hundreds of tips from Kim and Aggie. It's hard to keep reading though - you keep wanting to get up and dust something!

The chapter called "Getting Started" includes both ladies' preferences for putting together an essential cleaning kit. Kim and Aggie prefer simple, easily available things like white vinegar, salt, baking soda, lemons, laundry soap - even denture cleaning tablets. It's amazing how common items and a little elbow grease work miracles if you know when and where to use them.

Other chapters offer advice on Kitchens, Living Rooms, Bathrooms, Bedrooms, Pets and Allergies.

These ladies really know how to motivate people and make cleaning fun!

5 out of 5 stars Love These Ladies!.......2007-09-19

Excellent book, makes me want to clean my house! I like that they use so many common household supplies (lemons, baking soda, vinegar, etc.) instead of commercial chemicals.

4 out of 5 stars Hip, Funny and Helpful.......2007-08-18

Gotta love these two old British biddies with their "Oh my gawds" style of speaking. Their show is grand and the book is not bad. One of my peeves is on the show they use the term "biological powder" but never tell you what that is. A friend says it's "Fab" but that's just detergent, right? The girls don't mention what biological powder is in their book nor own their website. This is frustrating. Other than that, it's a good romp about how to clean your house - start in the bedroom first! - and move to the front (or bottom) of the house. Super advice. Good writing. Nice presentation. Lots of colorful photos.

5 out of 5 stars How much happier a clean house makes you........2007-08-10

Kim and Aggie change lives- If you have never seen the TV show, these women go into homes that should rightfully be condemned, clean them from top to bottom, and return them to the owners with stern warnings to "keep it clean". The book is an extension of this fantastic show that literally transforms people's lives. One can easily underestimate how much cleanliness and order contributes to a happy life. This book is a great guide to achieving and maintaining such order. The cleaning tips and methods are smart and easy and the cleaning solutions they use made from borax, salt, vinegar, baking soda, lemon to name a few are "cheap and cheerful". Cleaning made fun.

Book Description

Through harmony and rhythm, resonance and pitch, Ann Rand inspires readers to listen to the tuneful play of her text as it sings off each page. Illustrated with graphic designer Paul Rand's colorful, witty artwork, Sparkle and Spin is a children's classic (now happily available again through Chronicle Books) that reveals to young readers the power and music in the words they use every day.

"Paul Rand did not set out to create classic children's books, he simply wanted to make pictures that were playful. Like the alchemist of old, he transformed unlikely abstract forms into icons that inspired children and adults and laid the foundation for two books that have indeed become children's classics."
Steven Heller, author of Paul Rand

5 out of 5 stars Great book on explaining words.......2007-01-30

It's fun, it's easy for kids to understand. My twin boys love it, we talk about what is being read and it illustrates through pictures and words how things come together. And then the "why" questions just keep on coming!! Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars yet another chance to own the work of a master.......2007-01-12

It is a great chance to own a peice work of a master, reprint after so many years.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Ever.......2006-11-29

I grew up with this book in the 60s. It was originally published in 1957 -- which shows how incredibly cutting-edge this mid-century modern book was. Through the years later the lessons of the book about language and imagery remained in my mind, and as an adult I finally managed to locate an out-of-print copy. I'm glad it's been republished -- it's true classic by two masters of the era.

1 out of 5 stars Sparkle and Spin.......2006-11-10

Similar to "Little 1" ..... great retro graphics that adults can appreciate..... but the writing is boring and frustrating to read. Not very fun or interesting.

Book Description

From the U.K. mega-bestselling author Louise Bagshawe comes a delicious story of a diamond heiress in Paris

Fabulously wealthy, internationally adored, the aristocratic Massot family owns one of the last great jewelry firms in Paris. But seven years have passed since the disappearance of the patriarch, Pierre Massot. With hope of his return all but extinguished, his beautiful young widow, Sophie, reluctantly declares her husband dead and takes control of the family business. But even as Sophie begins to look to the future, forces are conspiring to destroy the Massots—by unearthing the devastating secret from their past that Pierre may have died trying to protect.

Bagshawe's sweeping story takes readers from the murky diamond mines of Soviet Russia to the cultural whirl of modern-day Paris, unraveling the mystery of Pierre Massot's fate and the scandal and deceit that lies behind the Massot family fortune. Spanning continents and decades, Louise Bagshawe's Sparkles is an addictive tale of ambition, betrayal, and romance.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Page Turner Until the End..........2007-08-24

If you enjoyed "The Devil You Know", you will probably be engrossed in Bagshawe's latest work. The characters are described so thoroughly, you could imagine which actors might be cast for a film version. However, the ending of the book gave such a twisted and bizarre surprise that was a bit much for me, as a reader, to be credible.

5 out of 5 stars I adored this book! .......2007-08-08

I found this book in the common bookshelf of my hotel while on my honeymoon and all but ignorned by new husband for the duration of our trip so i could read! It is that engrossing! The story is exciting and the characters are all well defined and so much fun. I gave it to a friend to read and she ended up loving it just as much as me.

4 out of 5 stars A definate page turner!!!!!.......2007-06-05

I actually looked forward to getting supper cleaned up, putting my pj's on and curling up on the sofa with this great read!!! I would have given it 5 stars had it not been for the repeated 'F' word used waaaaaayy too much! I know it was used for character development to make Peter Stockton look like the total pig of a slime ball that he was, but geez...come on. It was total overkill!! It was actually starting to hurt my eyes!!! Other than that it was very well written and enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Louise Bagshawe does not disappoint.......2007-04-12

Having read all of Ms. Bagshawe's books, I see her as becoming the next Jackie Collins for her intricate and original tales. Her latest, Sparkles, was just as enjoyable as her first. I could not put it down and read it in about 3 hours. A true must read for saga literature with lots of twists and turns.

4 out of 5 stars SPARKLES with delight.......2007-04-07

In Paris, jewelry tycoon Pierre Massot vanishes. His British wife Sophie remains in the city raising their son Tom in hopes that Pierre will return. However, she is very unhappy besides there is no closure as the millions spent on investigations proved fruitless. She also has to put up with the bullying tactics of Pierre's mother Katherine. Finally after seven years have passed since her husband disappeared; a fearful Sophie, over the objection of her martinet mother-in-law, has Pierre legally declared dead.

Sophie begins to look into the House Massot business. Company CEO Gregoire Lazard offers her lessons in the boardroom and bedroom. Pierre's former lover American expatriate head of public relations Judy Dean "befriends" the widow to insure Sophie does not interfere with her get rich schemes. As Sophie learns the business, some of Pierre's darkest secrets including the Russian connection, she meets fellow Brit Hugh Montfort, who offers her real comfort though he himself has suffered from personal tragedy.

When this thriller looks deep into the machinations of the missing Pierre, it is intoxicating as the audience wants more; when the story line focuses on the lifestyle especially the wardrobe of the rich and famous the plot suffers inertia as momentum is slowed. Still the cast is fully developed beyond the central lead character as the three females in Pierre's life and the four males (to include Pierre) in Sophie's life bring the plot alive. With a final plausible twist that will stun the audience, this book entertainingly SPARKLES with delight.

1 out of 5 stars Unsigned Beauties of Costume Jewelry.......2007-01-04

An excelent reference book, however, sellers/buyers need to know a particular designer to find items. Not all items are referenced. Sellers/buyers need to do MUCH more research if they are looking for something special.

3 out of 5 stars Review from a buyer in Australia.......2005-09-14

I was looking forward to receiving this book because as a collector I did not have a book on unsigned costume jewellery. However I was disappointed with the copy I received.
My main complaint is the quality of the illustrations. For the most part the photos are dull, too dark and the colours are distorted. Some pages have a definate brownish tint and other pages are quite grey. In comparison to other books on the suject the photos lack colour and clarity but this may be due to the printing and perhaps I received a particularly bad copy.
The book has 3 chapters that give insight into the birth of costume jewelry, the metals, stones, shapes and settings and also how to start a collection, date and restore pieces.
For the price the book covers the subject well.

5 out of 5 stars Unsigned and Unsung beauties of jewelry!.......2005-08-27

Marcia "Sparkles" Brown puts together the best books on costume jewelry there are. With all the pictures she includes it makes it so much easier to find something you may be wondering about and she has a lot to look at! I absolutely love her books!

5 out of 5 stars Basic Knowledge.......2005-07-20

I had read the book before when I started researching my mothers pins. I have now purchsed two of Marcie's books. They are well written, easy to follow, good pictures of pins and great advise.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Vintage Jewelry Buffs.......2004-11-18

I love this book!. It's chock full of excellent pictures and information for the vintage jewelry collector, whether a novice or one of long-standing. The book is well organized in its layout. I've discovered it's a 'collectible' book in its own right. Author, Marcia Sparkles Brown, has a video, which I also own and recommend.

Although not a whole lot on each designer, some mention is better than none. To find references to Judy Lee, BSK, LaRoco, Park Lane, Avon, Capri, Art, JJ, Les Bernard, Capri, etc. was of interest to me when I first started collecting jewelry because of the scarcity of volumes on these names. Other designers, such as Lisner, Coventry, Napier, Monet, etc., also included in this book, were more easily found when doing searches for designers.

The book has no index, so this may be a concern to others. But the designer names are presented in alphabetical order.

1 out of 5 stars Just talk to your mother!.......2006-04-02

I thought this book had some really weird ideas that wouldn't work. Some of them might even damage stuff. I am sending this book back and asking my mom how to clean things, even though I am embarrased that I do not know already. This book is no substitute for real experience.

1 out of 5 stars I didn't learn much........2006-03-27

I found this book dissappointing. It overstates the obvious. Unless you are totally clueless and never had to pick up your room as a kid, you probably know all this stuff already. A waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2002-08-21

This really isn't the type of book you sit down and read. It is the type of book you keep around for reference. Having said that though, I did sit down and page through this book and go many ideas regarding how to clean things that i thought I was doing a find job cleaning. What I learned, however, is that there might be a better way, a safer way, a less damaging way to clean something.

The author went right to the source of experts for cleaning directions. Want to clean a golf ball, crayons off a wall, hard water spots in a shower? Here is the way. Want to take care of cooking odors, clean a tuba, make a broom last longer? Here is the way.

Excellent resource.
Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Here's why this one STANDS APART from similar books:.......2001-02-21

The author did her research and asked experts how to clean items she wasn't familiar with. As an example, she goes straight to the team leader of specifications for Bowling Balls to find out how to clean a bowling balls and finds out what substances could actually hurt them. Covers both the basics (upholstery, stuffed animals, vases, wallpaper) and the more unique items (whirlpools, taxidermy items, motorcycles). I'd be surprised if the reader didn't find new information in this one!

4 out of 5 stars A helpful book.......2000-07-21

If you have just started your own home and you feel that you are standing at the bottom of a mountain not knowing where to start cleaning from, then you should get this book. I wish I had this book when I first moved to my own house. It would save me time and also I wouldn't be so much stressed everytime I needed to clean (that's excausting myself twice a week).

The book begins with instructions as to how to organize your cleaning schedule, what should your priority be, and what should be the last thing to do. And clean it like a pro, fast & right! Also, how to get rid of your clutter once and for all. It gives you advise as to what kind of detergents you should use, which cleaners are hazardous, which ones you should avoid and why. What I liked here, is How to hunt microbes (!)

In part two, it has an A-Z reference with everything you can find in a house, and how to clean it, so when you have a problem with a particular item, you don't just scroll up and down to find it, the A-Z makes it so easy.

Part three, again it's an A-Z rundown of everything you will need to know about. In this part, it gives further and more detailed information about cleaners as well as tools for cleaning.

I've had a lot of challenges to my faith lately, and Barbara Johnson's books never cease to leave me laughing and encouraged; she is a huge blessing from the Lord! I would highly recommend this book - and all of her others as well - to those needing a laugh to start the day or to keep you going whenever. (I use this book as a devotional in the morning over breakfast.)
God is good, and that will never change; life can be very challenging, though, and reminders of God's goodness through humor and loving thoughts can be a big boost to start the day with. Highly recommended!

This is all the stories:

Woof, There It Is: This is when the Cheetah's arrive to Hollywood. They also start making Cheetah Girls chokers. It's a cute story.

It's Raining Benjamins: It's Pucci's 9th birthday. Chanel's mother isn't sure if she wants Pucci to have his own pet. But anyway, she buys one. On Pucci's b-day, Chanel's mother is angry because Chanel did not have permission to get a pet. And, Pucci gets upset because his father bought him a math book. It's a cool story.

Dorinda's Secret: Dorinda finds out she has a REAL sister. Tiffany. Dorinda isn't sure that the Cheetah's are gonna be okay with it. So, she doesn't tell her crew. When Dorinda meets Tiffany, she finds out she is white. Dorinda also has a meltdown. But, at the end of the meet Tiffany says: " Can i have your phone number?" then " Can i have a hug?" then " I'm so glad i met you!" Dorinda tells her crew about her sis. They are cool with it. It's a neat story.

Growl Power: Aqua And Angie are going back to houston for Thanksgivng. It's a big story. You'll have to read it it! It's a fabulous story.

This is a nice book.

3 out of 5 stars BUY A BETTER GUIDE.......2007-07-21

I was not overly impressed with this book.It did have a list of a dozen or so of what I'd call "THE MASTERS",well know and VERY EXPENSIVE pieces, but none of the lesser ones that you find every day in farmer's markets, auctions, flea markets, yard sales, garage sales, etc.ie NO mention of Sarah Coventry,AJC,JJ,and some others.Okay maybe for a beginners book but mine has been used twice.I've had it for years!

3 out of 5 stars My grandmother's jewelry.......2007-05-31

If you are thinking about collecting (a sick, sick hobby of mine) this is a starter book. Be careful that you don't let the costume jewelry bug bite you. It costs a fortune and breaks everytime you wear it. My jeweler and I now have lunch every week.

5 out of 5 stars Memories of Iris - Vintage Jewelry is my business. .......2007-05-07

This is an excellent resource guide to have. There is so much vintage jewelry out there and details to know. Important for the collector.

3 out of 5 stars Would Have Liked More From This Book.......2007-04-03

This book is much thinner than the first volume and there is no table of contents so it is hard to find the companies covered. These are also the less expensive jewelry companies than the first volume. I wish the author had included more companies especially the less known more valuable marks. The author does a nice job with some basic information but this is not a useful for the advanced collector. Beautiful pictures.

4 out of 5 stars Signed Beauties of Costume Jewelry Identification & Values.......2006-03-30

This book has been a great help to me as a new beginner to Vintage Costume Jewelry. It has helped me to identify and appreciate the values on some pieces of jewelry. It has become an aid for me to value the jewelry I now collect and resell.
I would reccomend this book to any beginner collector.

Book Description

Now executive producer of Special Reports, Robin Hudson is feeling (relatively) settled. Okay, she's bored. In an effort to feel useful, she has taken under her wing a new intern, wide-eyed small-town girl Kathy Loblaws, and invited her along on a Girls' Night Out. It's Halloween, and Kathy doesn't show--but telephones from a strange man's closet. Aided by her pals, Robin must track down her errant charge through one long night of murder and mayhem, costumes and concealed weapons, men who are not what they seem (are they ever?), and unsettling dj vu. For Robin slowly comes to realize that the search for her missing intern is really a deadly trip into the past, fueled by an old curse. Sparkle Hayter's rapidly growing cult of fans will relish the return of Robin Hudson, her smart mouth, her wild hair, and her motley collection of insane girlfriends. Hayter, who has defined the screwball mystery genre, has one of the freshest voices in mystery writing today. * Hayter's first novel, What's A Girl Gotta Do?, won the Crime Writers of Canada's Arthur Ellis Award for best first mystery. Nice Girls Finish Last was nominated for best novel
* The Last ManlyMan, Hayter's new mystery, will be published by William Morrow in Spring 1998

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars More memoir than mystery.......2007-03-28

This book is the least "mystery"-like of the Robin Hudson series and was a little hard to get through. I read all the books in the Robin Hudson series while waiting for the next Stephanie Plum book to be released -- I was looking for something with the humor, romance, sexual tension and mystery of the Plum series. Of all the books in the Robin Hudson series, the first one (What's A Girl Gotta Do?) comes the closest to capturing those elements. The other Robin Hudson books are lacking in the romance and sexual tension areas. All of them are funny, with some zany characters or situations. This one has some of the more memorable laugh-out-loud scenes!

3 out of 5 stars Good writing style, less than stellar plot line..........2004-07-02

Back to some amateur female detective genre... This time it's Revenge Of The Cootie Girls by Sparkle Hayter. I picked up some of her work earlier and liked it, so I thought I'd keep reading. In this case, it's a good thing this wasn't the first book of hers that I read. It might have been the last. This one just didn't click for me.

Robin Hudson, now an executive producer for the studio she works at, is ready for a Girls Night Out event on Halloween. She invites her best friends as well as an intern who works for her. When the intern doesn't show up at the appointed meeting place, Hudson gets a little concerned. She ends up stumbling onto what appears to be some sort of charity event where her intern is going from place to place, and is then given a clue for the next location. Since the questions are about Hudson, she thinks it's some sort of benefit. But the clues get more bizarre, the locations more risky, and additional people start showing up who don't quite look like they're into "charitable events". Hudson thinks it's all part of something put on by an old school chum (a fellow "cootie girl"), but even that gets complicated. The story works up to a life or death showdown at the end.

I'll give the book an average rating as I like Hayter's writing style and imagery. For story and plot, it'd be a lot lower. The story line is muddled and doesn't move much, and far too much time is spent reexaming Hudson's years as a school outcast. At the end, I'm not quite sure who was doing what, much less why. I sincerely hope for better stuff to come, as I still have a couple more of her books to get to...

2 out of 5 stars Revenge of the Cootie Girls: A Robin Hudson Mystery.......2003-10-20

Very disappointed in this book...

It really started off well... But then the mystery part of it completely dropped off and turned into a life story about Robin Hudson rather then a Robin Hudson Mystery...

It's a good read, but definitally not a very good mystery...

3 out of 5 stars Too much crammed in.......2001-08-12

The reminiscences of adolescent rivalries, the Manhattan scene, some of the jokes, the contrasts with the Midwest and the reflections on female bonding were all good in their way. She throws in a mystery based on a Halloween treasure hunt and the whole thing becomes too complex. She strives hard to make her characters zany and eccentric and the plot takes arbitrary twists and turns as she and her friends follow the treasure hunt clues. The descriptions of bizarre costumes are a running gag which becomes repetitious. I bought this and "What's a Girl Gotta Do" (not read yet) after having read "Nice Girls Finish Last" which was easier to understand.

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but not as good as earlier ones.......2000-09-06

Books like this are hard to rate. While it wasn't bad, it wasn't as good as Ms. Hayter's first Robin Hudson mystery, "What's a Girl Gotta Do?" Yes, there were moments of humor, some really good, but all too often I found myself wondering just what in the world was going on. The first part of the story moved right along and was on par with Janet Evanovich's "Stephanie Plum" series. But then I found myself distracted by lengthy narrations into the history of the Cootie Girls and I lost the train of the plot.

Although the story line was one of revenge, I wasn't quite sure against whom. Was Robin the target, or just a pawn in a bigger plot? And, why? By the time I reached the end, my head was spinning and I was worn out from the convolutions the story took to try and figure it all out. I didn't feel the secondary characters added enough substance to the story, none of them evoked much sympathy from me, and seemed to be included just so Robin would have someone to talk to.

While "Revenge of the Cootie Girls" didn't entertain me as did "What's a Girl Gotta Do?" it wasn't a bad book and did provide a couple night's worth of nice reading. I just hope that Ms.Hayter's other Robin Hudson stories will provide me with greater reading delights.
