Definitely A-1!.......2001-03-24
If you are a Skyraider fan, you MUST get this book. It has the entire developmental history of the A-1. From its early beginnings as an "overnighter" sketch session in a hotel room to the various versions and models that served proudly for almost 40 years. A very informational book that is more than just pretty photos...

An Outstanding, Multi-Purpose Teaching Tool.......2003-04-08
This modern translation of the Westminster Shorter Catechism has become the standard modern rendering of this catechism and is a most profitable tool.
As is indicated in the short introduction to this work, the authors/translators were committed to making the Shorter Catechism accessible to today's readers in order to maintain its viability as a modern teaching tool and liturgical reference. The original language of the Shorter Catechism is sometimes difficult to follow, and this resulted in a decreasing emphasis upon its use. This translation eliminates this problem, and allows for a succinct and very faithful reintroduction of the Shorter Catechism to the masses via Reformed liturgy and instruction.
This modern version is quite lucid. As a result, it is a teaching tool that can be used with children, as well as incorporating it into regular worship in ways that seasoned Christians, new Christians, and interested non-Christians can understand and follow. As I will mention below, this is really critical.
It is important to address the major objection that always seems to come up whenever there is an undertaking to produce a 'modern rendering' of some centuries old work. Inevitably, the charge of 'dumbing down' is raised, where it is asserted that by creating a modern version, the accuracy of the original is compromised for the sake of contemporary ease of comprehension. And while I think this objection always has merit to the extent that we should always be very discerning about the faithfulness of any modern work to the original, I find that this particular objection is not valid in this instance. This modern rendering is very faithful to the original, and very accurate in communicating the distinctive truths of Reformed theology. In works like this, there has to be a balance between accessibility and accuracy. Jettisoning accuracy in the interest of accessibility is a bad idea that should always be rejected. However, that does not universally mean that it is impossible to accurately and faithfully make a previously inaccessible work accessible to people today. As a result, I believe this modern rendering is keeping with perhaps the greatest ecclesiastical tenet of the Reformation - the belief that Scripture should be accessible and available to laypeople, rather than confined among a powerful ecclesiastical elite. As the Reformation produced an explosion of Bible knowledge among the masses as a result of taking the Bible out of the priests of Rome and affirming the priesthood of all believers, so this work should take the Shorter Catechism out of the realm of the seminaries and back to the churches as a vibrant and vital teaching tool of Reformed theology. Highly recommended.

Reasons Why.......2005-10-13
Carl Solberg's book looks deep into the critical decisions of FADM William Halsey at the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Solberg is well qualified to do so as he was on Halsey's staff at the time. He finds that Halsey's "kitchen cabinet" staff ignored repeated warnings and requests to guard San Bernadino Strait, the route that Imperial Japanese naval forces would use to attempt to attack the transports in the Leyte Gulf area. Even Solberg's boss, the Intelligence Officer for the Fleet, had his warnings ignored. Solberg hypothesizes the reason for Halsey ignoring the warnings as a result of his inner staff and Halsey all being aviators, and all wanting, in Halsey's case desperately wanting, to get the Japanese carriers. Unfortunately, the Japanese carriers were bait, a spent force, designed to distract Halsey (the Japanese knew he was commanding the American fleet carrier force at that time). Solberg's boss was a Marine and not an aviator; other warnings came from surface force commanders. RADM Davidson, commanding one of Halsey's carrier task groups, did try to get a warning through, but there is no evidence Halsey ever saw it; his staff likely insulated him from news he didn't want to hear.
Solberg's book is a case study for decision making under stress and under uncertain conditions. Although it is a military case, and an old one, the lessons from it apply to civilian public and private sector organizations. Solberg's style is a little artificial in places, but he paces a good story and doesn't waste the reader's time.
Decision and Dissent is a must read for the serious reader and researcher of the Pacific campaign of WWII. It also is an excellent read for the casual military reader.

Disappointing for the price.......2006-07-15
I read this book hoping for an insightful biographical account; for the presentation, the length, and the price, I was expecting a penetrating look into this remarkable figure's life.
Instead, there was a great deal of fluff. No nonsense involved, but I got the impression that for the list price, I should have been getting a well-researched, highly-documented and -footnoted hardcover.
The author cannot seem to decide whether he is aiming for a dramatic narrative or serious-minded historical account, and his ambivalence between the two styles and the general pace tends to lend a disappointing cast to the book overall.
Awful Book.......2004-01-04
I had to read Slave and Citizen for a class in college and I was very disappointed in the book. I couldn't wait to finish the book just so I would be done with it. It dragged on and on. I would not have finished it had I not had to. I would not recommend it unless you are very interested in this subject.
A slow-moving book, full of repetative information........1998-12-12
I did not at all enjoy "Slave and Citizen." Nathan Irvin Huggins' writing dragged, and information seemed to be frequently repeated. I was disappointed that the vast majority of the book was political in nature. Douglass' personal life was focused upon very little. His time spent as a slave and in childhood was touched upon only very lightly. Likewise, his marriages and children were only briefly mentioned. The rest of the book, which could have been adequately summarized in just a few pages, drug on and on. I was disappointed, and will be searching for a more personal biography of Douglass to read.

Freedom for all.......2000-07-17
Fredrick Douglas was literally one of the greatest minds of all time. As a slave he wanted to be a free man. He was illiterate and learned to be literate. In the end, he shared his thoughts and his life with us all so that all men could be free and have freedom not only the slave. The greatest lesson this man could teach anyone is that the key to freedom is through education and learning. Any form of slavery can be freedom if you simply learn and educate yourself. If you choose to be a slave to what you are a slave of then you are a slave. If you wish to be free, learn and be free.

WarbirdTech A-26 Invader.......2007-05-19
Very good nuts and bolts book. Not just a picture book, but a thorough history of the A-26.
Okay, but not great.......2006-02-19
Pretty good entry in the WarbirdTech series. Good overall history of the A-26 but, as is the nature of the A-26, can get a little confusing at times. Tedious in parts, especially when speaking about the civilian upgrades, but that's made up for with the pictures. Some great pictures of WW II/Korea nose art.

Book Description
With the publication of My Bondage and My Freedom in August 1855, former Maryland slave Frederick Douglass became the first black person to join a very select company of Americans to publish a second and entirely new autobiography. In the decade that had elapsed since Douglass wrote Narrative, he had become an accomplished journalist, adopted philosophical and political principles that would have been heretical in 1845, and risen to key leadership positions in the northern free black and American reform communities. This new edition of My Bondage and My Freedom, with a substantial introduction and extensive annotations, enables both scholars and general readers to appreciate a remarkable instance of the art of autobiography as well as a milestone in African-American intellectual achievement.
Customer Reviews:
Frederick Douglass's "My Bondage and My Freedom".......2007-09-23
Douglass's second, and lengthier, narrative fills in many of the gaps left in his first autobiography: we learn about his mother, his siblings, and more details about his psychological transformation from brute to man. It's quite insightful, as Douglass is careful to relate each of his personal experiences to the innate evil of the peculiar instituition, for both the slave and the slave holder.
Essential Reading.......2006-04-27
Having read a biography of Douglass many years ago, I thought I knew his story. Hearing through his pen was an entirely different matter. What a master of the language and insighful set of observations on human nature.
I am a man of many words, but words fail me in my endorsement of this book. The letter to his former master in the appendix is worth the price of the book by itself.
One Man's Journey; Inspiration for a Nation.......2004-02-21
Standing in line at the Lincoln Memorial, a book beckoned to me that I previously hadn't seen before. The face of Frederick Douglas grabbed my attention; a man that I've respected for many years, encountering him mainly through my study of Abraham Lincoln. On the spur of the moment, I snatched up a copy of "My Bondage and My Freedom", and within a few days, my admiration in Frederick Douglass was transformed from interest to awe.
Frederick Douglass orginially penned his book as a response to people's accusations that someone as articulate and composed as he couldn't possibly be a former slave. With that goal in mind, Douglass wrote his memoirs, in a straight forward, powerful way. In the book, he painfully and honestly documents the path his early life took; the memories of being owned, how slaves coped during these times, and how he managed to pull himself out of it all.
While Douglass' life in itself is amazing, (as he describes the amazing process he undertook to learn how to read), what amazed me even more are Douglass' discourses that he sprinkles through the book, discussing relevant issues during the time. In one instance, he addresses the concern about why slaves simply didn't run away from their oppressive situations. It's almost as if you can actually hear the people talking to Douglass and he responding to them.
This book does not only tell the tale of a truly amazing American, but gives us a unique insight to the times. This book should be required reading in every high school in this country.
My Bondage of Freedom by Frederick Douglass.......2003-11-14
What are your impressions of Frederick Douglass? What would you say about Douglass observation that "conscience cannot stand much violence? Do you think it was possible to be a good slave owner? Why or why not? Why does Douglass view slaveholders as well as slaves as victims of slavery? Why is education incompatible with slavery? Why do you think the white children's attitude toward slavery is different from that of their parents? How would you describe Douglass attitude towards Mrs. Auld?
I'm shocked to be the first to review this........2001-09-28
My Bondage and My Freedom, one of Douglass' several autobiographies, a very important book that should be read by anyone interested in United States history generally, or the crucial and often tragic role race has played in that history. Douglass, a former slave, was one of the few African-Americans who achieved prominence in the largely white, new england abolition movement. Douglass was an eloquent writer and (by historical accounts) speaker. His recounting of his experience as a slave, and his reflections on his role as a black former slave in America, are powerful.

Needed an Orthopaedic Surgeon After Lifting Them!!.......2007-08-25
Seriously though, while these suckers are friggin' heavy, they are some of the best resources you can get your hands on when it comes to the shoulder. The two volumes offer quite a bit of comprehensive information on just about every shoulder condition you'll run across in the clinic (or hospital). Obviously they aren't for the general public, so if you're a layperson without a medical background, you should skip these. Rather, they're geared toward medical people such as ortho docs, surgeons, PT's, or any other professionals who deal with shoulder patients regularly. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff for anyone who has shoulder pain or rotator cuff issues. It's for patients but can come in quite handy for the surgeon with overworked shoulders as well!
The Shoulder.......2006-02-01
Overall an excellent resource for the orthopaedic shoulder surgeon. The basic science is sound and review of the literature is generally thorough. The glaring failure of this book is its coverage of arthroscopic topics (or lack thereof). Clearly arthroscopic shoulder surgery has been revolutionary to the advancement of our understanding and treatment of the shoulder and although the primary author still considers it the "tool of the devil", arthroscopy is now KING when it comes to the shoulder. Hopefully the next edition of this fine textbook will include material and video from some of the current experts in the field of shoulder arthroscopy.
THE BEST BOOK ON SHOULDER PATHOLOGY WORLDWIDELY.......2004-04-21
I'm a Physical Therapist specialist and researcher on Frozen Shoulder Rehabilitation the last 20 years. I feel the need to thank all the great Proffessors of Orthopaedics and authors of this superb book that offered to me so extensive in -depth view descriptions on anatomy, pathology and treatment options on Shoulder disorders that I couldn't find in any other book on the field!!! The book helped me to advance my knowledges on Idiopathic Frozen Shoulder. The last years I offer functional rehabilitation to all my patients in the PHYSICAL THERAPY CENTER of NMY - IKA (Prefectural Health Unit) of the city of THESSALONIKI in less than 1 week with my new method called "SAKALI'S METHOD"! This book must be in every serious scientist's and researcher's library, not only for Orthopaedic surgeons but also for every high - level Physical Therapist specialist in Shoulder pathology. My review is in memorial of excellent Teacher, co - author of this great book "The Shoulder" and Proffessor of Orthopaedics in Washington University at Seattle, DOUGLAS T. HARRYMAN. Dear Proffessor, your spirit shall be in our mind of all of us, who are interesting in Shoulder pathology, forever!!!
Great book.......2003-06-24
This book has help me at lot, a very serious book, with a lot of good referencer. However, as i is with these kind of serious books - some of the latest arthroscopic things is mising, but it is very close to 5 stars.
A practical shoulder textbook.......2000-03-31
This is the second edition of "The Shoulder". A notable improvement from the first edition is the addition of a CD ROM which allows the reader to watch surgical techniques on a PC. The basic textbook itself is excellent. The chapters are well organized and well written. It covers a wide breadth of shoulder topics, and provides practical tips for making diagnoses and carrying out surgical procedures. It is a must for any surgeon who operates on the shoulder.
