Kitty Kelley, author of exhaustive and highly unflattering biographies of Frank Sinatra, Jackie Onassis, and the British royal family, among others, has never received much cooperation from her subjects. Likewise, none was given for The First Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty, and it's not hard to understand why. In the book, the family that has produced two presidents as well as an assortment of other politicians, businesspeople, and a number of lesser-known black sheep is portrayed as a powerful empire that leverages wealth and influence to grow ever stronger while stringently covering up numerous instances of drug abuse, infidelity, poor judgment, and scandal. While charges about George W. Bush, including that he snorted cocaine at Camp David while his father was president, garnered the most attention upon the book's release, Kelley's history goes back several generations, detailing the rise to power of Senator Prescott Bush and his son, the first President Bush. Those seeking a salacious peek at the inner sanctum of a wealthy and powerful family will not be disappointed by The First Family--Kelley always delivers on that count--and will likely devour allegations of Barbara Bush's sour temperament, George H.W. Bush's long-standing affair with aide Jennifer Fitzgerald, and George W. Bush's obnoxious drunken frat boy days that stretched, according to Kelley, well into adulthood. Those seeking a rock-solid and airtight indictment of the Bushes, however, will be disappointed, since Kelley leans on anonymous sources and rumors for some of the juicier bits. Interestingly, although it tells the stories of a family built on politics, The First Family mostly avoids the subject, clearing the decks of all political substance in order to put the style on wider display. --John Moe
Book Description
They have wielded enormous financial power and dominated world politics for more than half a century. They have been appointed to positions of great power and have been elected as governors, congressmen, senators and presidents. They have shaped our past and, with our country at war under the leadership of their number one son, they are, more critically than ever, shaping our future.
As the Bush family has risen to dominance, so too they have been master orchestrators of their own public image, acting and operating under the shield of privacy their money and status have always afforded them. Until now.
Number One bestselling author and investigative biographer Kitty Kelley has closely examined the lives of Jacqueline Onassis, Nancy Reagan, Frank Sinatra, and the British Royal family. Now the First Lady of unauthorized biography reckons with the first family of the United States—and the result is at once a rich and shocking history and a very human portrait of the world’s most powerful dynasty.
An important work on wealth, power, and class in America, The Family is rich in texture, probing in its psychological insight, revealing in its political and financial detail, and stunning in the patterns that emerge and expose the Bush dynasty as it has never before been exposed. Ms. Kelley takes us back to the origins of the family fortune in the Ohio steel industry at the turn of the last century, through the oil deals and international business associations that have maintained and increased their wealth over the past hundred years. The book leads us through Prescott Bush’s first entrée into government at the state level in 1950s’ Connecticut, to George Herbert Walker Bush’s long and winding road to the White House, to his son’s quick sweep into the same office. Along the way, we see the complex relationships the Bushes have had with the giants of the century—Eisenhower, Nixon, Joseph McCarthy, Kissinger, Reagan, Clinton—as well as the often ruthless methods used to realize their goals.
Perhaps most impressive—and surprising—is the way the book delves behind the obsessively protected public image into the family’s intimate private lives: the matriarchs, the mistresses, the marriages, the divorces, the jealousies, the hypocrisies, the golden children, and the black sheep.
At a crucial point in American history, Kitty Kelley is the one person to finally tell all about the family that has, perhaps more than any other, defined our role in the modern world. This is the book the Bushes don’t want you to read. This is The Family.

The Bush Family at Home.......2007-10-16
If you are a conservative Republican, this book is definitely not for you (although there is a lot of interesting historical background on the Bush clan). For the rest of us, Kitty Kelley has taken us inside the Bush camp, be it Texas or Maine, to show us what really goes on in the family. She shows the legacy of Senator Prescott Bush (the grandfather and probably most likable Bush) through George HW Bush and his climb through mediocrity to the presidency on to W, whose failing oil business was propped up by Saudi money. Surprised? There is lots of dirt here, some big stuff, some small, but I guarantee it will keep your interest.
While the Bushes (and their attendant spin machine) have tried to paint Kitty Kelley in the most unflattering of ways (or ignore her book altogether), no law suit was ever filed based on the truthfulness of the book (although it was threatened, of course). Kelley is the biographer of many who would rather not be placed under the microscope (such as the British Royal family, Jackie Kennedy, and Elizabeth Taylor), and her forte is the cocktail gossip that many would not give credence to. Several of the more startling suggestions, notwithstanding, however, I found that the tiny details were more interesting than the "big scoops." For example, at the Maine family compound, one will not find any books, unless they're in the suitcase of Laura Bush. Imagine: a presidential dynasty that doesn't read? Think of the implications of that!
Kitty Kelley has examined her subjects well, and most will find the resulting book very interesting indeed. The historical background on the Bushes' relations with the Saudis is just one area that helps explain their foreign policy approaches. Much like the more carefully examined Kennedy clan, family relations are key to the Bush family, and the matriarch (Barbara, in this case) rules with an iron fist. Although some may dismiss all this as idle gossip, I found "The Family" endlessly fascinating. It isn't often that common citizens can get a sneak peek inside a presidential dynasty.
some people have too much power.......2007-06-13
this family has far to much power & should be reined in there dangerous
The Family: Dysfunctional in its quest for relevance .......2007-01-03
How did so many people get duped by this tedious, biased and speculative gossip rag of a book? Granted, considering the current President's track record, he's an easy target to grill. I was hoping to get some genuine insight into abuses of power or executive privilege on the Bush's part. Maybe even a little investigation and evidence behind how nepotism and shady corporate deals may have allowed some unfair political advantages.
Instead, we read about allegations of domestic abuse, driking binges and infidelity on Dubya's part, with NO substantiations behind it and nothing that hasn't been already presented by others. Cheap shots are at the forefront, like regurgitating the Larry Flynt charge that GW had an affair with a woman who later had an abortion. Or about how the First Lady supposedly smoked (and sold!) marijuana in college. Yet the claim of having hundreds of sources interviewed for the book doesn't lead to anything severely damaging or with any basis in fact.
At least Michael Moore had an actual copy of the National Guard document with James R. Bath's name on it in "Fahrenheit 9/11". He did his homework and sought proof that could turn into something sacrosanct. Kelley leans too heavily on repetition of weak claims and personal bias to convince the reader that what's being read deserves more attention than the latest Britney Spears teaser on the cover of Star magazine. If nothing else, Kelley succeeds in drawing attention away from issues like Bush's handling of the war in Iraq (which gets about 1% worth of book content in its 700+ pages). Instead, the author uses amateurish gossip fodder as if she's writing a Bob Woodward expose.
Yet another example of how a biographer succumbs to tabloid journalism in an effort to shift the public's opinion and carry out personal vendettas.
A Chilling Portrayal of the Bush Family.......2006-12-12
I usually wouldn't rate a book until I read at least 3/4 of it. But in this case, I just read the 20-page introductory "Author's Note", and thought that, in itself, was very chilling. The secret nature of the Bush family is is beyond what you would normally expect of a wealthy, high-profile family. My impression of Kitty Kelley is that she is an enormously courageous person to undertake a book of this nature. It would have been easier to write about the Mafia than the Bush family.
If you are not familiar with Kelley's work, you might be tempted to judge this book by the cover, which is bright (in red, white, and blue)and seems to project am upbeat, happy, patriotic story about the Bush dynasty.
But the book is very sobering. I have read the first five chapters, and highly recommend it. But beware .... be prepared for the truth: America is being run by an elistist with ties to secret societies that have nothing but contempt for the poor or average American citizen.
It's All About Power.......2006-06-30
For the Bush Dynasty it's not about:
Service, Making the world a better place, Making a positive difference, Defending your beliefs or values.
For the Bush Dynasty it's all about:
Power, Influence and Money.
This book is a scary story about all that is wrong with American politics. It's also about the evils of Elitism. To understand Bush's America you have to understand the Bush Family. This book is fair and balanced in it's study of the Bush Family...but it's also truthful and therefore damning of the Bush Dynasty.
Book Description
Praise for Johnny Bush and
Whiskey River (Take My Mind):
"Johnny Bush and I started out together... The story contained in this book is gospel."
Charley Pride
"From the crown of his western hat down to the tips of his needle-nosed James Leddy cowboy boots, Johnny Bush is pure-D Texas from the get-go. His telling reads like a honky-tonk song, only real; you can hear the hurtin', heartache, cheatin', and pain in every word and feel the boot-scootin' shuffle with every turn of the page."
Joe Nick Patoski, author of
Selena: Como La Flor and
Stevie Ray Vaughn: Caught in the Crossfire and writer for
Rolling Stone and
No Depression
"Through his talents Johnny Bush has made a significant contribution to country music, and has given to his many fans the joy of magnificent music. You will enjoy meeting this creative man through this book."
Ralph Emery
"I am as proud of Johnny Bush as I am of Willie Nelson, Roger Miller, and Johnny Paycheckall Cherokee Cowboys alumni. I am especially proud of his triumph over his debilitating voice problem. This is the real story, told in his own voice."
Ray Price
"From hard-time hungry Houston childhood to Nashville hit-making, from scuffling honky-tonk sideman to king of the Texas dancehalls, from victim of a strange career-killing illness to comeback kid, Johnny Bush has a Texas-sized story to tell about his life and times in country music. He tells it honestly, with humor and humility. Listen up when he speaks."
John Morthland, contributing editor,
Texas Monthly, and former associate editor of
Rolling Stone,
Creem, and
Country Music
"Johnny Bush is one of my oldest and dearest friends. He and I started out together in music, and we're still together. Everything that's been said about me in this book, good or bad, is pretty accurate."
Willie Nelson
"I love Johnny Bush. He is classic Texas honky-tonk, one of our state's treasures. Every honky-tonker out there has tried to sing like him, myself included. Thanks, Johnny, for being a true Texas original, and for your friendship."
George Strait
When it comes to Texas honky-tonk, nobody knows the music or the scene better than Johnny Bush. Author of Willie Nelson's classic concert anthem "Whiskey River," and singer of hits such as "You Gave Me a Mountain," "Undo the Right," "Jim, Jack and Rose," and "I'll Be There," Johnny Bush is a legend in country music, a singer-songwriter who has lived the cheatin', hurtin', hard-drinkin' life and recorded some of the most heart-wrenching songs about it. He has one of the purest honky-tonk voices ever to come out of Texas. And Bush's career has been just as dramatic as his songson the verge of achieving superstardom in the early 1970s, he was sidelined by a rare vocal disorder that he combated for thirty years. But, survivor that he is, Bush is once again filling dance halls across Texas and inspiring a new generation of musicians who crave the authenticitythe "pure D" countrythat Johnny Bush has always had and that Nashville country music has lost.
In
Whiskey River (Take My Mind), Johnny Bush tells the twin stories of his life and of Texas honky-tonk music. He recalls growing up poor in Houston's Kashmere Gardens neighborhood and learning his chops in honky-tonks around Houston and San Antonioplaces where chicken wire protected the bandstand and deadly fights broke out regularly. Bush vividly describes life on the road in the 1960s as a band member for Ray Price and Willie Nelson, including the booze, drugs, and one-night stands that fueled his songs but destroyed his first three marriages. He remembers the time in the early 1970s when he was hotter than Willie and on the fast track to superstardomuntil spasmodic dysphonia forced his career into the slow lane. Bush describes his agonizing, but ultimately successful struggle to keep performing and rebuild his fan base, as well as the hard-won happiness he has found in his personal life.
Woven throughout Bush's autobiography is the never-before-told story of Texas honky-tonk music, from Bob Wills and Floyd Tillman to Junior Brown and Pat Green. Johnny Bush has known almost all the great musicians, past and present, and he has wonderful stories to tell. Likewise, he offers shrewd observations on how the music business has changed since he started performing in the 1950sand pulls no punches in saying how Nashville music has lost its country soul. For everyone who loves genuine country music, Johnny Bush, Willie Nelson, and stories of triumph against all odds,
Whiskey River (Take My Mind) is a must-read.
Customer Reviews:
Country Music Veteran .......2007-03-29
Not everybody can be Garth Brooks, and thank the Good Lord for that. Johnny Bush is the real deal in country music, he's been laying down good music for years both as a songwriter and singer, primarily on that Texas circuit where the fans demand high quality and will go to the wall for you if they love you. But you have to earn that respect and Bush did. He cut his teeth playing in small time Texas bands like that led by uncle, minor honky tonk legend Jerry Jericho. He then moved up to Ray Price's glorious Cherokee Cowboys. Frustrated in Nashville, he headed back to Texas and built a career based around strong songwriting (he wrote Whiskey River, made famous by Willie Nelson) and solid performance. He tells most in this open, honest autobiography. The text is engagingly written and the stories well told. There is no better insider look at the world of honky tonk music.

credo in vehicularum homicidum.......2007-08-16
The very idea of these airheads expressing their "faith in God" is vile enough. But the idea of including Laura "Gas Pedal" Bush is really too much. Why didn't she care when she ran over her boyfriend 25 times, the whole time shrieking about revenge? I don't consider that very holy.
Why are we not a Christian nation again?
AN INSPIRATION.......2007-04-26
I was really encouraged by all the many stories of triumph in this book. Women I look up to who have had difficultly in life. I see them and I think they have had an easy life and that's why they're leaders and influencial, but they haven't. They've overcome through their faith and it gives me hope that I can too. I keep my copy in my bathroom and rarely a person who uses it doesn't come out commenting on one of the stories. It would be a great book to give as a gift for any occassion or to someone who is struggling with one of the twelve issues the author covers.
not worth it.......2006-06-20
I think a couple billion people could think of other people to tell stories about. Not these.
eww....please........2006-06-20
These women are hardly worth a look into faith. Try someone worthy and readable without laughing...or puking.
An Awesome Book - Couldn't Put It Down!.......2005-07-17
I met author Leslie Montgomery at the CBA/International Christian Bookseller's Convention where she was signing copies of the book. I got in line because I like collecting autographed books by authors. I had no idea the treasure I'd found. I put the book in my purse so on the flight back to Miami I'd have something to read - I couldn't put the book down; I cried so much as I read the story about the couple who lost their son Matthew, but I was encouraged by their faith in God. I lost my son two years ago. I know what it is like. Thank you for sharing your story and thank the author for writing it down. I'm buying copies for my book store immediately. I highly reccomend this book to anyone going through a hard time. I pray that the author keeps writing books like this. Thanks.

One of Ron Roy's Best Books.......2007-09-02
This was an interesting book that I liked a lot. There are two main characters who are kids: KC, the President's step-daughter, and Marshall, who lives in an apartment building near the Supreme Court. Someone robbed the Treasury, and they try to figure out who did it. They get a tour of the Treasury and a lot of help from a clone of the President. Kids who like the A-Z Mysteries will like this book. (As told by John, age 7.)
Great series for kids.......2007-06-09
My 8 yr old loves these books. He's read all 7 and can't wait for the next book to come out.
Book Description
The First Ladies Fact Book is the definitive guide to the lives, achievements, triumphs, and tragedies of every first lady from Martha Washington to Laura Bush. Arranged chronologically for easy reference and illustrated throughout with artwork, photographs, and documents, it is a complete overview of everything you’d ever need to know: the major impact of their lives and the legacies they left behind; their personalities and personal habits; their early lives; their family backgrounds, siblings, children, friends, and foes.
What’s more,
The First Ladies Fact Book surpasses typical references, featuring selections of the most intimate correspondence of each first lady, from letters to their families to letters to their presidential husbands. Delightful surprises abound, including little-known information about the women’s hobbies, style of dress, habits of socializing, and peculiarities. The more than 700 evocative photographs include sixteen pages of color photography of first-lady fashion, making it a wonderful combination of solid reference and eyecatching visual history.

Fascinating information!.......2006-11-10
I am teaching an extra-curricular high school class this semester on the history of U.S. presidents and wives. This book has some very interesting information on the wives of the presidents. I have found fascinating tidbits from this book which kept my students interested even when the presidents might have proven boring! I am enjoying reading the book on a personal note too!
Fascinating Stories.......2006-03-19
This huge book bollows Mr. Harris earlier book The Presidents Fact Book where he talked of the Achievements, Events, People, Triumphs, and Tragedies of Every President. Obviously in this book he is not talking about the presidents but their wives.
The first ladies have had their own share of the making of history. In recent years, Jackie Kennedy did a lot towards the creation of the Camelot image of the Kennedy years. Hillary Clinton is certainly remembered for her efforts towards creating universal health care.
These are just two small details of the lives of two first ladies. This book has over 700 pages about their lives, their interests, their activities in the white house and the way that they worked with their husbands to assist in the governance of the country.
And yes, there is a color section of pictures featuring mostly the clothes they wore.

A Humorous, Touching Story.......2002-05-14
This is a lovely, delightful little story with gorgeous illustrations. The moral is one to be discussed with your child - that if you were like "everyone else" you would lose what makes you special. A must read for every child!
Great fun to share!.......1999-01-13
This is a great story to share and read aloud. The rhyme scheme flows easily, and the illustrations are just as silly as the text. The kids in my storyhour have loved it as well as the adults. Boy, that is one foolish fish!

Customer Reviews:
You should read this book!.......2007-07-30
The Skeleton in the Smithsonian is an exciting book to read because KC and Marshall have to solve lots of clues to save the Smithsonian. I like it when the kids figure out Leonard Fisher's real job because it leads them to the real skeleton. This book has a lot of action!
Great book.....great series.......2007-05-05
My two daughters ages 9 and 7 absolutely love the Capital Mysteries series including this book. We were surprised that we weren't able to find them in the shelves in any bookstore along side their other favorites like A to Z Mysteries,
Best Capital Mystery yet!!!.......2003-11-10
This book is the third in the Capital Mysteries series. K.C. and her friend Marshal go to dinner with the president and find out that someone claims to be in heir to James Smithson. Is he really an heir to James Smithson?? Or is he a fake?? Find out in Skeleton in the Smithsonion!! I reccomend this book to kids 5 and up.
