Book Description
The untold story of the "Holy Roller" musical prodigy Sister Rosetta Tharpe, America's first rock guitar diva Long before "women in rock" became a media catchphrase, Rosetta Tharpe proved in spectacular fashion that women could rock. Born in Cotton Plant, Arkansas, in 1915, she was gospel's first superstar and the preeminent crossover figure of its "golden age" (1945-1965). Everyone who saw her perform said she could "make that guitar talk." Shout, Sister, Shout! is the first biography of this trailblazing performer who influenced scores of popular musicians, from Elvis Presley and Little Richard to Eric Clapton and Bonnie Raitt. An African American guitar virtuoso, Tharpe defied categorization. Blues singer, gospel singer, folk artist, and rock-and-roller, she "went electric" in the late 1930s, amazing northern and southern, U.S. and international, and white and black audiences with her charisma and skill. Ambitious and relentlessly public, Tharpe even staged her own wedding as a gospel concert-in a stadium holding 20,000 people! Wald's eye-opening biography, which draws on the memories of over 150 people who knew or worked with Tharpe, introduces us to this intriguing and forgotten musical heavyweight, forever altering our understanding of both women in rock and U.S. popular music.

The biography of Sister Rosetta Tharpe....portrait of a life well lived.......2007-05-15
As a collector and student of American popular music for more than 40 years now I have occasionally come across the name of Sister Rosetta Tharpe in some of the reference books that I own. I would also see her name mentioned in the liner notes for various CD's as well as in books chronicling the rich and diverse history of American popular music. Having said that there was really not a heck of a lot of information out there on the life and remarkable career of this extremely influential figure. Author Gayle Wald has corrected this unfortunate oversight with her entertaining and highly informative new book "Shout, Sister, Shout: The Untold Story of Rock and Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe". As a result of reading this book I have already been motivated to purchase a collection of her music. And let me tell you I was not disappointed!
Sister Rosetta Tharpe was born in the tiny town of Cotton Plant, AR on March 20, 1915 not far from the birthplace of another American music legend Johnny Cash. With the encouragement of parents who were very active in the local Church of God in Christ, Rosetta began singing in church at an unusually young age. Before the age of six she started playing around with a guitar. Just about everyone who saw and heard Rosetta thought that she was an exceptionally gifted young lady. In fact, it was her acumen with the guitar that would set her apart and help to make a career in music possible. "Shout, Sister, Shout" follows the mercurial career of Rosetta from performing at her local church to a gig at the world famous Cotton Club in New York City in 1938. It is quite apparent that Rosetta was torn between the gospel music she grew up with and loved so much and the incredible opportunities and financial rewards that beckoned in the secular world. It was a dilemma that would take her years to resolve. In 1938 Rosetta inked her first recording contract with Decca records. Decca was looking to make a name for itself in the emerging gospel and blues market and viewed Sister as their ticket to success. She did not disappoint! In 1941 Sister Rosetta Tharpe joined the Lucky Millinder Orchestra as a featured vocalist. This band was at the height of its popularity at that time and Rosetta made some very memorable recordings with them. But by 1943 Rosetta had tired of the secular music scene and was determined to return to the music she really loved. Ever restless, Sister would return to the secular world from time to time as opportunities presented themselves. In 1950, she appeared on Perry Como's television show and in 1952 she recorded a duet with the legendary country artist Red Foley in Nashville. Sadly, Sister Rosetta Tharpe was only 56 years old when diabetes struck. Two years later in 1973 she died of a massive stroke on the very day she was scheduled to record a brand new album for Savoy records.
"Shout, Sister, Shout" tells the fascinating life story of Sister Rosetta Tharpe. You will the meet people who were most influential in her life, especially her mother Katie Bell Nubin and her close friend Marie Knight. And you will come to understand how it was that a female black guitarist that emerged in the 1930's would become such a major influence on people like Chuck Berry, John Lennon, Elvis and even Mick Jagger. By reading "Shout, Sister, Shout" I was able to fill in a good many gaps in my knowledge of American popular music. Cheryl Wald has come up with an extremely important book that can be read and enjoyed by a wide variety of audiences. Very highly recommended!
Rosetta credited.......2007-03-26
As I have been looking forward to someone writting a book about Sister Rosetta Tharpe I was excited that one was on the market. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was sensitively written and with a lot of information about this neglected gospel star who pioneered so many trends in music and what she did on stage. A lot of what she accomplished she has not been given due credit by writters of popular music and this book seeks to balance this oversight.
My only critisism was that there were not enough pictures of rosetta in the book and could of done with a fully discogrphy.

Soul Sisters Touched My Soul.......2005-10-17
I have always had a high regard for Edwinna Gately, both as a poet and as a woman of faith. In the Preface, she states that when she saw some of the paintings by Louis Glanzman, she felt an overwhelming desire to be the author for his upcoming book. Indeed, the combination is one of power and beauty, affirming the spirit of women and opening our eyes to ways that the lives of these 12 women of the Bible continue to teach us today. My first encounter was the poem of Mary Magdelene and I sat and cried both at the injustice we have perpetuated around her life story, and the power of her story for our world today. The picture of Anna the Prophet was one which I used for prayer of gazing for many days. It is as if Glanzman was truly able to see into the souls of these women and gives us the opportunity to do so as well. The poetry does not tell us what to think, but rather invites us to look inward and see our own souls. A book I will forever treasure in my library both as a spiritual director and as a woman of faith.
art framed by poetic text.......2004-05-07
These beautiful portraits by renowned artist Louis Glanzman have inspired author Edwina Gateley to reach into the soul of these women from the New Testament, and apply their stories to situations that have happened in modern times. One of my favorite comparisons is that of the widow who gave her two mites, all she had (Luke 21: 1-4), with Gateley's experience as a missionary in Africa and of being given three tiny eggs wrapped in banana leaves, as a gift of gratitude.
Each chapter begins with a portion of scripture that pertains to the woman in the painting, and continues with an average of ten pages of poetic text. The twelve portraits and chapters are: Elizabeth, Anna the Prophetess, Mary, The Widow's Mite, Martha, The Infirm Woman, The Samaritan Woman, The Woman Caught in Adultery, The Woman with the Hemorrhage, The Daughter of Jairus (which is the lovely portrait on the cover), The Penitent Woman, Mary Magdalene, and there is a thirteenth portrait of a mother and child next to the preface page that is unidentified.
Perhaps my favorite is the one of Mary, with her large, luminous, wise and sad eyes, entirely clothed in white, set against a halo of golden tiles.
Louis Glanzman is an extraordinary artist, who has also painted twelve portraits of men of the Bible in a book titled "Soul Brothers", and among his many accomplishments are eighty covers for Time Magazine, and the illustration of the "Pippi Longstocking" children's book series.
Edwina Gately has authored many books, among them "A Mystical Heart", and is the founder of the Volunteer Missionary Movement.
New Testament Women for the Thinking Christian.......2003-10-12
Never before have I encountered such a deep and rich interpretation of the women of the New Testament. Glanzman's insightful depiction of each woman is both remarkable and riviting inspiring Gateley's profound and poetic meditation upon each one. Occasionally we encounter a book that is life-altering. This is one of them.
Very powerful and moving..........2003-08-28
Edwina's stories really move me and challenge me to keep trying. She makes me think...I find the insights so pertinent to my own experiences. It's obvious she's 'been there', walked her journey, and I feel blessed for her sharing of it.
Insightful perspectives!.......2003-01-03
Not only do these new drawings of well-known biblical characters captivate you, but so does Gateley's narrative. What a fresh perspective! This book is a gem. Edwina Gateley's insight into these women's lives engage the reader, inspiring and challenging the possibilities for women's relationships today, as well as offering a deeper understanding of the women in Sacred Scripture.
Book Description
This new Chicken Soup book offers a heartwarming and uplifting collection of stories that celebrate the lifelong bond of sisterhood. Whether they share this special connection with someone through genetics or the heart, only a sister can understand the complex, deep and dynamic relationship they share with loved ones as they journey together through the stages of life. For younger sisters who look up to an older one, older siblings who tolerate a younger sister tagging along, or the brother who knows full well that girls can wrestle as well as any boy can, this book celebrates the sisters in our lives. It conveys how sisters influence us during life's most defining moments: helping us face the schoolyard bully; providing wise counsel during our first crush and subsequent comfort after the breakup; and refusing to reveal intimate secrets to parents or friends. With real-life stories from celebrities and everyday sisters-next-door, chapters include: On Love, Insights and Lessons, Sibling Rivalry, Overcoming Obstacles, The Bond Between Sisters, Sisters by Heart, On Family (Brothers, Too!), and Special Memories and Traditions. While they may not live under the same roof, act in the same manner or even get along without an occasional spat, nothing creates a more special and lasting bond than sisterhood. Now there's a book to celebrate that bond.

Sisters Chicken Soup.......2007-01-10
I bought the book for my 3 sisters and me. I gave them to my sisters for Christmas and asked them to let me know when they read certain stories that reminded them of things they remember. I haven't heard from them yet, but I know I will, as all 4 of us are close at heart though miles apart. They all agreed it was a perfect gift.
Sister to Sister.......2006-11-17
I bought this book with the intention of giving it to my sister when I asked her to be my maid of honor at my wedding. I had forgotten that I already bought this book for her (I kept this copy for me). I marked a touching story in the book having to do with a wedding. She didn't get the meaning behind it, but it made her cry anyways and the best part is that she said yes!
chicken soup for sisters.......2006-03-05
I was bawling by the third story in the first chapter! This book is a real tear jerker.
Another great chicken soup book in the series.
A must to share between sisters and friends. There is a chapter dedicated to brothers as well. I would have to say this is probably the best chicken soup book i have read by far!!!
The Chicken Soup that "Touched Me"........2003-11-04
This book really touched me. It taught me to love my sisters whenever they are mean or do bad things. One of these stories was the most awesome story ever! I said that this one girl's sister had cancer and lost all of her hair. When she went to visit her sister she had a hat on that said "having a bad hair day," but when she took the hat off she was bald, she shaved all of the hair on her head off so her sister woulnd't feel bad about having no hair. That was the story that touched me the most.
Excellent Read.......2003-04-14
My First Chicken Soup book that I have read, and this was simply excellent. I laughed, cried, and it brought back all my childhood memories.

life changing little book!.......2007-03-25
This is a great little book! It really changed my outlook on life and gave me a whole new way to channel what life deals you. I read it from cover to cover without stopping. Very interesting.
Maria Simma's accounts of the souls in purgatory.......2007-01-11
This book was informative. It was suprising to read that some souls do go directly to Heaven without any suffering in purgatory. I didn't like the illustration on the cover. I can't imagine the Blessed Virgin Mary every being so scantily dressed. It was offensive to see her depicted that way.
The book was easy to read.
Amazing book!.......2007-01-05
This book was great! Easy to read yet very thought-provoking. I enjoyed it immensely and I will be sure to read it again and again!
A Very Short Book But Full of Important Messages!.......2006-06-27
This booklet is a very good introduction to the doctrine on Purgatory and gives us the viewpoint from an extraordinary lady, Maria Simma from Sonntag, Austria who has been visited frequently by the souls in purgatory. For a full understanding of the doctrine on purgatory, I strongly recommend you read the Catechism of the Catholic Church first before trying this booklet as it will then make more sense to you. There is nothing doctrinally wrong with what is written here although one should be well-versed in the faith to really get the most out of this booklet. I've read it recently for the second time and it made much more sense to me now than it did the first time. I had since joined the RCIA as a sponsor and endeavoured to learn more about my faith, reading and attending bible classes etc and so it made much more sense to me the second time around. Thank goodness God doesn't judge us on what is "fair" or what we "deserve" because we all deserve death by that token. What's great is the concept of accountability and restoring what is right by making restitution for what we have done wrong. There's no doubting God's forgiveness but we have to also make good the wrongs we have been forgiven for or at least try to lest our faith become a dead faith (read the letter of James for more clarity). Anyone seen the tv show "My Name is Earl?" or even the movie "Flatliners?"
The Main Concept Here Is: Pray to Jesus Christ-Always........2006-02-25
The main idea here is about believing in Jesus Christ.
Always. I don't agree with an element or two of it, but it did its job at persuading me to come to Jesus Christ. I am glad it did.
Going to Church is key, but when going to church one prays to
Jesus Christ-always. Believing in saints, in mary, and treating preachers like God is wrong, but believing in Jesus Christ that He is God is true. This is the heart and core of going to church. All about Jesus Christ. Being with Christ, believing in Christ, and praying to Christ. This book persuaded me as well as the death of Pope John Paul the Second that it is very important to follow Christ's way of life. It is through Jesus Christ that one will see the Father(God). Prayer is very important so pray always to God(JESUS CHRIST). Book is recommended. Prayer is important...Let the Holy Spirit come into your life, and transform you into a new person, a person filled with love, and a love for Christ as well. Just pray (prayers/or talk to Him)and ask Christ to forgive you of your sins, and ask Him to come into your life so He can transform you into a new person, a loving person no longer filled with malice sadness, hate, etc.
I also recommend the BIBLE ESV By Crossway publishers (2001), a white and black Bible that can be a great companion to this book.
Simmas books is just an intro but always follow the Bible. Christs Holy Book. If your church does not talk, nor pray to Jesus Christ then that Church is AntiChrist. It is that simple.
God bless. Yes, i recommend this book by Simma, i hope it can take you to further literature as well. Simmas book is an easy read. THE HOLY BIBLE ESV is in American English (Thank God) in case one got lost with English English.

Customer Reviews:
Sister Fidelma books.......2007-01-03
As usual, Peter Tremayne pulls you into the far past and the gripping world of Sister Fidelma for another fast paced mystery. I love his work.
Good read.......2006-12-07
Tremayne is actually Peter Berresford Ellis, Celtic scholar, and this is his 16th Sister Fidelma mystery.
It is 668 AD, and Fidelma and her husband Eadulf must travel to the far west of Ireland to help solve the murder of Abbess Faife and the kidnapping of six novices. The political situation could be very unstable, as peace has recently been reached with the Ui Fidgente, the warlords of the area. Fidelma's skills as an investigator, her rank as a dalaigh, a sort of ancient legal advocate, and her knowledge as a scholar will be needed desperately.
Once they arrive at Fhearta Abbey, they discover that the scholar Cinaed has been killed--struck down in the chapel.
Was Cinaed killed for his views on marriage among the religious? His views on the trinity? Or was it something he had discovered and written about recently--all his writings are burned shortly after they arrive. Jealousy may be the cause (his wife and mistress hate each other); and other scholars resent his standing and influence, while deploring his views.
A shipwreck on the coast also figures into the story, as does gold hidden in the ruins of a rebel tower, a sly and duplicitous local warlord, and the "ghost" of a dead rebel, Uaman, who seems to be leading a nasty band of warriors. Fidelma is able to unravel the many strands of this mystery and show how all these are related, and discover who really is the "ghost" and responsible for the many deaths.
Tremayne is able to create seventh century religious life in a Celtic abbey with careful precision and lifelike characters.
Armchair Interviews says: You will truly be swept away into the past.
An easy medieval history lesson.......2006-11-22
If you're already a Sister Fidelma fan, I only need to tell you that this is another good one.
If the good sister-lawyer-noblewoman is new to you, ask yourself this: Could you be tempted by a superbly written medieval mystery that painlessly lays out the advanced culture of the Ireland of the 7th century while presenting a magnificent page-turner?
I have to admit that I love fiction written by genuine historical experts who enjoy making their period come alive by fictionalizing it. The Sister Fidelma books are a great example of that.
The most recent volume is a treasure.
brilliant Sister Fidelma who done it.......2006-11-17
The Ui Fidgente and the Eoghanacht of Cashel have been at war for centuries until the battle at Cnoc Aine when the Ui Fidgente leader was killed. He was replaced by Donennach who pledged fealty to the King of Muman because he wanted peace for his people. In the territory of the Ui Fidgente, a member of the abbey Ard Fhearta was bludgeoned; at almost the same time, six religious from the abbey along with Abbess Faife are making a pilgrimage when they meet a battered sick man.
He tells them that he was the victim of wreckers who deliberately destroyed his ship on the rocks during a storm and killed his men and stole his cargo. They give him the clothes of a religious to wear and while he is changing, brigands kill the abbess and takes the religious hostage. Ui Fidgente warlord Conri asks Sister Fidelma to help figure out the mystery while her brother orders her to do so in order to cement relations with their former enemies. Fidelma is accompanied by Brother Eodulf, who wanted to stay at Cashel with their son and get ready for their binding wedding but knows that he must help her in her inquiries. When they come close to getting some answers, Sister Fidelma's life is in jeopardy.
Peter Tremayne writes some of the best historical mysteries due in part to his heroine, a woman living in an enlightened country when the rest of Europe is going through the dark ages. Her abilities as a dalaigh, an officer of the law courts, and her role as the sister of a king makes her a very powerful woman. The mystery is impossible to figure out as is the link between the death of the Venerable Cinaed and the disappearance of the six religious. Even the heroine claims this is the hardest case she ever worked on. MASTER OF SOULS is another brilliant Sister Fidelma who done it.

Book Description
Young and beautiful, Fenice Zucchar lives in opulent splendor on the world's richest island. The pampered daughter of a wealthy and powerful owner of ocean-going merchant vessels, Fenice's soul yearns for the freedom of the sea--for the adventures and breathtaking sights and sounds that await her far from Venice, her velvet prison. Determined to flee, she feigns an audacious kidnapping and stows away on one of her brother's ships on the very eve of her own arranged wedding.
But her plans are dashed to bits when, upon discovery, her brother refuses to offer her safe quarter--and abandons the young noblewoman in the teeming port of Varna, just as panic is descending upon the city. For death has come to this place, spawning stories told in hushed, frightened whispers in the night--a being of strange, alluring power and dark sensuality who has chosen Fenice, offering her more freedom than she could know in a hundred lifetimes.
Subjugation is the price this mesmirizing creature demands fro the exquisite renegade's eternal pleasure, as Fenice follows her Dark Lord to his mountain domain, where she is to live...and die. But another is waiting there already, lurking in the shadows of the imposing castle keep: a lovely and crazed consort already corrupted by Dracula's terrible passion...a once-mortal girl named Kelene, late of a distant realm called Greece who could prove to be Fenice's staunchest ally and sister, or her most fearsome adversary.
Customer Reviews:
great series-but when's the third one comming out?!.......2006-05-16
i loved the first novel in this series when i was seventeen...i loved this one almost as much when i was 19, now i'm 25 and dying to read the third and final novel in this series which she seems to have choosen not to write, which is a shame, beacause these novels are fluid and beautiful....
not as good as the first one...but worth reading.......2002-09-22
I have to agree with one of the other reviews. This was a good book, but not as interesting as the first and certainly not of the caliber you'd expect if you're a CQY fan.
So-so..........2002-07-15
I was really looking forward to this book, having enjoyed "The Angry Angel" quite a bit. However, this second volume in the series defintely lags behind Yarbo's initial offering.
She spends the first several chapters telling us in many different ways what we already know: that the heroine, Fenice, is bored and frustrated with her life of Venetian privilege and yearning for adventure on the high seas and elsewhere. Enough, already! Let's cut to the chase! But no - these points are belaboured for a while longer; her disapproving family, her boring fiance, her desire to postpone marriage for as long as possible, etc. etc. etc.
In contrast to "The Angry Angel," for most of this book Dracula is basically absent. There seems to be little real connection between him and Fenice, and little reason for one. Unlike Kelene who was trapped in a situation of dire poverty and physical danger, Fenice is in the lap of luxury. How many people in real life are desperate to flee lives of privilege for the squalor and "adventure" of street-life? This motivation is not realistic.
Finally over halfway through the book things begin to pick up, but by this time finishing the book is an act of will. My ennui was completed by the discovery that Kelene, the heroine of the first novel, has somehow morphed from a wise-beyond-her-years, interesting teenager to a spoiled, petulant brat. What?!
Let's hope the heroine of book 3, whoever she might be, realizes there's more than enough of Dracula to go around.
The Soul of an Angel.......2002-03-03
Am reading the first and second books in this trilogy for about the third time. They both get better with every read. When will the third one be out? I anxiously await it. Quinn Yarbro looks at vampirism from a different angle than Ann Rice. Excellent read no matter how many times you read them.
NUMBER TWO / A Success.......2000-06-02
Fenice is the second virgin that Dracula decides to seduce and bring back to his castle for companionship or maybe for the amusement that the rivalry between her and the first virgin Kelene produces. Fenice having been brought up as a wealthy young maid has had a different background than Kelene, but after the initial battles for Draculas favor, Kelene uses her superior mind to form a truce with Kelene. Very good book. Can't wait for number three. Despite the need for feeding, for blood, a true rivalry and believable relationships ring true.

Book Description
In a land of lost, wandering souls, Journey with care on the River Styx.
A prince of darkness plays his roles -- Protect the Charmed Ones from his tricks.
Prue's editor at 415 magazine offers her a challenge: if she takes a really fantastic photo, he'll run it on the cover. This could be Prue's big break -- if she can come up with a killer concept.
But when Prue snaps the shutter, all the models collapse into a deathly slumber! To rescue the innocents, the Charmed Ones descend into Hades, fighting underworld perils and uncovering an unholy plot. To rescue the missing models, they must match wits with the greatest of the ancient Greek gods -- and one of the sisters might not be allowed to return to her mortal life.

Officially the best Charmed book ever!!!! *bows to Elizabeth Lenhard*.......2005-10-13
As far as I'm concerned, ALL other good Charmed books (The Queen's Curse, Whisper's from the past, Dark Vengeance, Mystic Knoll, Inherit the witch, Something Wiccan [just to name a few]) are small potatoes in comparison to this superbly penned Charmed book!!! NO other Charmed novel could possibly be better than Soul Of The Bride!!! Elizabeth's work here, is a masterpiece!!!!
What makes this story stand out from the other Charmed books is her impeccable blend of Greek Mythology and the Charmed ones tale aptly blended in. She mixed the two geneologies flawlessly, very well blended, I should add. Every single tiny detail added in is beneficial for the Charmed ones, and that's what stands out in this book. Alot! For example, the part where Piper takes a quick glance at Prue and realizes that she is still wearing Piper's necklace, makes Piper remember that she had to pay Charon the fee to take them over to the other side of River Acheron, which is taking the letter opener and mother-of-pearl inkwell, just in case. Turns out that the letter opener is useful in impaling the Sirens!!!
I'm not going to reveal details of the story, but I guarantee, whether or not you know about Greek Mythology, you will definitely enjoy this story. Soul Of The Bride is a must-have for all Charmed fans!!!!!! My fave bit is when Phoebe is determined not to give up and succumb to the tasty grub kept in Hades, only to realize they are tainted to make people an empty-headed party animal. Also, all 3 sisters had a vital part to play, and with their team work, girly (and sisterly) support, all the loose knots are tied, the i's are dotted and its a happy ending for them.
My only thumbs-down about this story is just that its seems like a pretty huge coincidence that Nikos had known about Prue's photo shoot and sent Mitchell to make sure Prue's topic is on Victorian Portraiture, using Greek Mythology, which then lures Phoebe to Hades. In the Charmed Universe, coincidence is extremely rare, unless Nikos had known it all along, and places a spell on the them to find out.
But other than that, it is 100% recommeded, you WILL love it, like I did!!!
I paid $9 for this book and every single cent was worth it!!!!
Two Thumbs WAAAY up for Miss Lenhard!! *G*.......2005-06-23
This one of the best Charmed books ever written. I loved the combination of Greek Mythology and Charmed. Unlike the 'Oh My Goddess' episodes, this book blends both genres together effortlessly. The writing is top-notch... it really pulls you into what's going on. I had a hard time putting this book down (finished it in a couple days.. even with work).
HIGHLY recommend this to Charmed fans. You won't be disappointed :).
Best book yet!!!.......2004-08-23
I am a huge, HUGE fan of charmed, I love the series, but ANY OTHER BOOK PALES IN COMPARISON TO THE SOUL OF THE BRIDE!!! It follows the story of the power of three flawlessly!!! If you are interested in any kind of mythology, or even if you're not, the soul of the bride is a MUST-HAVE!!!!
Greek Myths+ Life.......2004-07-10
i have read all the books in the charmed series and this is one of my favorites. it combines the greek mythologies with modern day life, which i think is quite creative. i highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys greek myths.
i love this book!!!!.......2004-06-04
this is one of my favourite charmed books!!! as it shows true halliwell spirit. basically prue gets the oppertunaty for a front page photo. but the camera she uses sends all the models and pheobe into hades. in the effort to get there sister back piper and prue have to go through loads of greek mythology gods and creatures. this book is a must have for all charmed fans

Wow!!.......2006-12-05
Katrina's life has been anything but easy. At the age of fifteen, Katrina was kicked out of her parent's house due to being pregnant. Katrina was forced to live on welfare and in a shelter until she meets Tony. Tony seems like her knight in shining armor but he's nothing but a pimp looking for his next money maker. Katrina leaves Tony after he discovers that she's pregnant with her second child. Katrina goes back to prostitution to support her two children Nina and Jimmy. But when Katrina is sent to jail, Nina and Jimmy are left to fend for themselves. Nina and Jimmy must be strong for other if they're going to survive.
Neglected Souls is a riveting novel by Richard Jeanty. Jeanty skillfully takes readers on an emotional journey of a young family struggling to make it. I loved the way this author captured the turmoil and hopelessness of Katrina, Nina and Jimmy. I felt myself rooting for Nina and Jimmy as they were trying to fight their way out of the ghetto. Readers will be glued to the pages to the very end. Neglected Souls is the perfect lead in to the sequel Neglected No More
(RAW Rating: 3.5) - Playing the cards you're dealt.......2006-08-09
Sometimes life has a way of handing you a few bad cards in the game of life and survival depends on how well you can play the hand that is dealt. For Katrina it was a grueling task of just making it from one day to the next. Raped, pregnant and tossed out on the streets at the age of 14 is unthinkable, but it happened to Katrina. Further tragedy ensues when she and her daughter, Nina move in with a pimp and he introduces (used loosely) her to prostitution. The result is a way to earn money, but she also gets pregnant with her son Jimmy in the process. Katrina would spend many years trying to keep her family together as she works the streets trying to hide her occupation from her children. Ultimately, she is consumed with prostitution and drug abuse to the detriment of Nina and Jimmy. Katrina finds herself in jail for murder, nowhere to turn and of no help to her children. So she makes a decision she feels is in their best interest.
Nina and Jimmy, left to fend for themselves on the mean streets of Boston overcome many obstacles to stay together and stay focused. Each one had their own demons that drove them to succeed. Nina had her dream of being on the police force, while Jimmy became a star athlete in high school with professional aspirations. While living alone, undetected by authorities without any parental figures, Nina and Jimmy raised each other. They had the help of their mentor, Pastor Jacobs, whom they met at the Boys and Girls Club. Pastor Jacob would become the parental figure in both their lives and help to give them some of the guidance they both would need.
NEGLECTED SOULS by Richard Jeanty is a book that touches your soul deeply. I really felt for Katrina and her children. I walked away with a newfound respect for organizations like the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Organizations like these do so much to keep neglected children off the streets and in productive programs. I thought the characters in this book were interesting and well thought out; however, I would have liked to have read the story through their dialogue rather than the author's narration. Also, a few layout problems existed with the book that presented some disruption to the flow. In all, this was great story about overcoming obstacles and problems in the hood. It was great to see a story like this one that showcased some of the successful outcomes rather the negative ones we see too many of.

Highly Respected Explicit Material .......2006-07-11
This is by far the most interesting masterpiece I've read all year. It captivates not only the mind and body, but also the soul, as suggested in the title. This book is uncontrollably addictive and easily received by most.
Neglected Souls by Richard Jeanty: An PeoplewholoveGoodBooks Review.......2006-06-04
Katrina Johnson grew up in a strict household with very religious parents, after being raped at 14 and turning up pregnant, Katrina is kicked out of the house by her father. Alone on the streets with a baby, Katrina moves from shelter to shelter until one day she meets Tony. Tony sweeps Katrina off her feet, and she begins to fall head over heels. She has no idea what Tony has in store for her. He uses her love for him to convince her to sell her body to support them and their "lavish" lifestyle. Soon, Katrina begins to see there are 2 sides to Tony, and after becoming pregnant with her second child, Tony throws her out. Homeless with 2 children to support, Katrina quickly blows through the money she saved and once again, must sell her body to support them. Soon, Katrina gets mixed in with the wrong man. A man who turns her onto drugs. Now, an addict, Katrina struggles to support her habit while neglecting her children, Nina and Jimmy in the process. After Katrina commits murder, she is sent to prison and Nina and Jimmy must now fend for themselves. Nina is determined not to allow her or Jimmy to wind up in foster homes. The children grow up and despite their troubled childhood, begin to put their lives back together until a repressed memory comes back to haunt them .....a memory that leads to murder. Neglected Souls is the gritty, heartbreaking story of 2 children who survive sexual, physical, and emotional abuse to make it despite the odds stacked against them. Richard Jeanty has written an touching story with unforgettable characters.Reviewed by Shay C of PeoplewholoveGoodBooks.
Terrible.......2006-04-26
I thought this book was unreadably bad. It was poorly written, and full of spelling and grammatical errors. It didnt seem as though it had been proof read or edited at all. It seemed like something written by a high school student, which would be fine, but not when you are charging people 15 dollars to buy it and presenting it as a completed novel. I think its a sad state of affairs that a book like this is even able to get published.

Finding the Path Back to Myself.......2007-01-12
"At the midpoint of life's journey,
I found myself lost in a dark forest
with no straight path I could see anywhere." ~Dante, "Divine Comedy"
This book is helping me find my way back from the abyss of confusion and indecision that I've been dangling precariously over for more than a year. To say this book is enlightening is much too mild. It's life-affirming, life-changing, empowering, soul-nourishing and uplifting. It's overflowing with quotes worthy of sky-writing! Would that I could do that for all women to read!!!
This is one of those books that needs a galaxy of stars.
A GIFT FROM THE GODDESS.......2005-07-27
This is a remarkable book. Well-thought out, inspirational and well-researched. The stories of the author, her "soul sisters" and figures from her-story are clean and clear and relevant. The exercises are simple and thought provoking. A wonderful gift to re-ignite the feminist spirit in any woman and to compliment traditional and non-traditional religious paths! Get one for all your soul sisters and form a circle as suggested-I sense it will focus your life and change the face of women in the world!
A Spiritual and Creative Awakening.......2002-11-27
In August, I found myself creatively blocked. At the time, I was unable to move forward on four projects due in November. One day, my frustration level hit the roof. I could not see past the list of things to do and the shrinking timeline. I questioned whether I had the courage and faith to serve as a vessel for each project's creative expression. I left my day job in a daze. As I walked up Massachusetts Avenue, Spirit guided me to Kramer's Books on Dupont Circle. I wasn't sure what I would find, but my soul knew there was something wonderful waiting for me on Kramer's bookshelf. Within twenty minutes of perusing the women's book section, my eyes fell upon Pythia's book. I opened it and read the introduction. One passage captured my attention: "Indeed, the gift of the women's liberation movement has been to show that the talents of women do not just shine in marriage and in child-raising, but in all spheres of life, from politics and sports to art, science, religion, journalism, medicine, and business. Thus, in the last decades of the twentieth century, women's wide ranging creativity has flourished as never before. This historic watershed has opened up endless vistas of possibility for women, allowing them an unprecedented opportunity to experience precious freedoms so long enjoyed by men." Pythia's words described the essence of who I was as a child born in the sixties ... a beneficiary of the women's liberation movement. She reminded me that my creative projects were a blessing despite the temporary appearance of any blocks.
Unable to put the book down, I continued reading the introduction, savoring each word ... each insight ... each revelation that Pythia shared from her own experience. Her reflections on "growing up in the Catholic Church and as a student in a spiritual organization headed by a man" resonated within my soul. Like her, I grew up Catholic and always felt that the religion diminished my ability to serve as an altar girl and worship fully as a whole spirit. Her comments on the power of the goddess movement affirmed my unique spiritual path and creative expression. She helped me see that they were "a beautiful quilt made from discarded fabrics." By the time I finished the introduction, a light had reappeared in my spirit and a bond between a reader and an author was solidified. So I did what any smart person would do ... I purchased the book.
In the weeks following my purchase, the book became the magical elixir I was seeking to awaken my spirit and unblock my creativity. The first chapter on courage introduced me to Judith Jordan's concept of "supporting courage in others." It reminded me of how my mother has been a never-ending source of support. As I have matured, I have been able to return the gift. Together, we share a "courage connection." This insight guided me in completing my short story about a mother-daughter relationship. I greatly appreciate Pythia's selection of stories that illustrated the "courage connection." My favorite is the story of Jane Holmes Dixon and Diane Rehms. It confirmed what I always knew ... that next to Creator, women friends are one of the greatest sources of listening ears, compassion, prayers, and affirmation. Pythia's section on Warrior Queens from History featuring Sojourner Truth made me smile because she is a personal ancestor that I call upon regularly for strength. It also helped me embrace my own personal motto. After reading the story of Isak Dinesen's motto, "Pourquoi Pas? (Why not?), I declared it to be mine. The written exercise on writing the epic of my bravest deeds was cathartic. Making the list took some time. At first, I judged what were my bravest deeds. In the middle of the process, I threw caution to the wind and allowed my pen to dance across several journal pages that I can now use when I get frustrated or feel like I want to quit. The exercise itself was a demonstration of courage. The list of epic deeds paints a picture of a heroine that I can call my own ... me. The exercise on invoking an invisible companion reconnected me to the power of one of my personal goddesses, Sekhmet, a Kemetian/Egyptian goddess who represents courage.
Often times, I move through life so fast that I forget to acknowledge the importance of women friends serving as "faith-holders" in my life. Pythia's second chapter on faith refreshed my memory when she shared her friend Susan's explanation: "women act as faith-holders for one another. What she means by this is that a true soul sister can help her friend stay focused on her quest to live her best life and fulfill a cherished ideal. By doing this, a woman helps keep faith in her friend's unlived potential, even when the rest of the world is doubting or rejecting her goals as impossible dreams." This passage was eye opening because I have not always made the wisest decisions in who I have selected to be my friends. It has become my measure of friendship.
Pythia taught me that selecting "faith-holders" is as important as maintaining an arsenal of inspirational faith walkers. I have added Jane Holmes Dixon to my personal arsenal. Her faith walk journey led to her participation at the Democratic Convention as a panel moderator despite peer discouragement. Completing the exercise on creating a testament of faith gave me a blueprint of beliefs and convictions that would ground and guide me as I pursued my creative projects.
The chapters on courage and faith were the most instrumental in my spirit's awakening and creative breakthrough because they helped me surrender and trust the divine process. I learned how to be a holy vessel ... a soul sister manifesting courage, faith, beauty, love and magic.
Soul Sisters - Pythia Peay.......2002-11-25
This amazing book is so beautifully written and deeply researched that one will come back to it over and over again. It is full of inspirational stories of women past and present, renowned and ordinary, as well as the authors personal stories. I have given copies to friends who all feel the urge to share it with others.
intriguing journey into my own soul.......2002-07-04
As a born-again Christian, I wasn't sure I would enjoy the variety of feminist, mystical, Sufi, Buddhist, etc. experiences this book explores, but I found it fascinating and enriching. Peay is incredibly well-informed, serious, caring, and thoughtful.
I have purchased this book as a gift for many friends of different religious backgrounds, and all have treasured it.
