Book Description
David Duke's riveting autobiography.
Customer Reviews:
An Autobiography with an Engaging Presentation of Research.......2007-04-20
MY AWAKENING is a captivating book that exemplifies how a student is to do a research [theme] paper. Dr. Duke used autobiography to structure his awakening that was thoroughly researched, cross-checked and referenced. His writing engages and draws you deeper into each of two topics using the facts and evidence; while his multiple sourced examples test the credibility of his sources. Here you will see how racial differences evolve in geographically separated populations; and you will see how influential zionist leaders can maintain their culture of excusiveness while directing others to multiculturalism. The author studied, awoke and was surprised by the discoveries.
The voice of tolerance.......2006-12-14
At last, a book which explains the most important issue of modern times in a way which will help rather than hinder the cause. Most racially-conscious writers are full of such spleen and venom that they overplay their hand and turn off those they wish to convert. Duke doesn't. He has clearly thought deeply about this issue and holds no hatred for anyone. He just demands the same rights for his own people that non-white "community leaders" demand for theirs. If every American read this book, Duke would be the next president.
Freedom of Speech Begins Here.......2006-04-25
I read David Duke's semi-autobiographical "My Awakening."
This is 3 books in one:
1)the Duke story
2)a study of race and society
3)a study of the Jewish question, including their dual code of morality, the non-Semitic origin of the Ashkenazi Jews, reasons why the accepted Holocaust story may be wrong, and the Jewish role in communism and the New World Order.
The portion on race and IQ cites the same experts as "The Bell Curve," but is nowhere near as dry or boring. This is easy reading because of the conversational tone of the book, and the very well-presented charts.
So, is Duke synonymous with hatred? Yes, because if you believe him, powerful people will hate you.
Enlightening.......2006-01-19
This book is probably the most important I've ever read. It is very difficult to find, a testament to the type of suppression that has followed the auther David Duke throughout his entire life.
The book jumps back and forth between details of the author's life and research on sociology, anthropology, history and genetics; all of it is carefully referenced. The transformation of the American media is shown clearly and factually. Foreign influences with nefarious purposes have been shown to exist at the heads of all major newspaper publications in the entire country. Most of the legislation which has brought down the national average IQ, school systems and neighborhoods are exposed. It was all blurry before I picked up this book and it is now frighteningly clear. Everybody should read this book if we are to survive.
Those who have sought to discredit and bash the author have been shown as the criminals they are. David Duke has never commited a violent or criminal act in his life, yet he was almost murdered on three occasions. Why? There is not a racial slur or virulent phrase in this entire book. The message is purposeful, positive and redeeming. Open your mind and give it a read, it's well worth it.
Read and perish.......2006-01-03
Warning this book will cause your IQ to drop by several points. Mr Duke using flawed and false research and broken reasoning to make the same old tired racist claims of superiority of the white race. The views being no diferent than when he was spouting them as a member of the KKK, same old pig but with new lip stick. what magazine/comic book did he apply to for his PHD? The only people who will find this book useful will be those wishing to re-enforce the same point of view.
Book Description
The moving, inspiring memoir of one of the great women of our times, Shirin Ebadi, winner of the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize and advocate for the oppressed, whose spirit has remained strong in the face of political persecution and despite the challenges she has faced raising a family while pursuing her work.
Best known in this country as the lawyer working tirelessly on behalf of Canadian photojournalist, Zara Kazemi – raped, tortured and murdered in Iran – Dr. Ebadi offers us a vivid picture of the struggles of one woman against the system. The book movingly chronicles her childhood in a loving, untraditional family, her upbringing before the Revolution in 1979 that toppled the Shah, her marriage and her religious faith, as well as her life as a mother and lawyer battling an oppressive regime in the courts while bringing up her girls at home.
Outspoken, controversial, Shirin Ebadi is one of the most fascinating women today. She rose quickly to become the first female judge in the country; but when the religious authorities declared women unfit to serve as judges she was demoted to clerk in the courtroom she had once presided over. She eventually fought her way back as a human rights lawyer, defending women and children in politically charged cases that most lawyers were afraid to represent. She has been arrested and been the target of assassination, but through it all has spoken out with quiet bravery on behalf of the victims of injustice and discrimination and become a powerful voice for change, almost universally embraced as a hero.
Her memoir is a gripping story – a must-read for anyone interested in Zara Kazemi’s case, in the life of a remarkable woman, or in understanding the political and religious upheaval in our world.

A good introduction to Iran and its Society.......2007-06-05
This is a concise book on how the society is affected by revolution and its vagaries in Iran. Written by the venerable Nobel Laureate, it showcases many brutalities done by the regime in the name of tradition and religion. This also shows a woman's struggle to cope with the human rights in such regime. Although written very briefly and possibly in a haste, meaning that scenes jump to one another suddenly and there is no in depth explanation why the society is behaving like this, this book is a primer in civil movement in Iran. I had a long-time suspicion that Iranian law is very messy, making its people hate the regime and it turn Islam itself. This book proves it, which shows how Iranian penal code uses extreme means in the name of Islam, whereas the same laws are very different in other muslim countries.
a good woman.......2007-05-23
Here is a woman who is trying her hardest to be islamic and make excuses for her religion which is a bad one to start with. Very few mulims seem able to look at Mohammed and his life. However, this is a brave woman in the limits of Islam.
WONDERFUL!.......2007-03-22
This book is the perfect book for people looking to read inspirational stories. I would recomend this book to anyone with an open mind.
Good insight into the Iranian view of their own nation.......2006-12-21
This book gives an intelligent and objective view of the turmoil of Iranian life from the 1979 revolution to the last year. It isn't a history book, as mentioned in other reviews, but a memoir as it admits, thus it is more focused on the life and reflections of the author rather than a documentary approach. The author is a devout muslim and seeks to promote the view that Islam and democracy are not incompatible. She is honest in her accounts of her government and how it has treated its citizens, but she is not a shill for promoting the official US line about our relations with Iran. She definitely feels that the US has a good share of blame for the state of things. However, she does seem to avoid, for the most part, the common Iranian party line that all things bad are America's fault. Her account of the reform period of Iranian politics in the late 90's is particularly helpful in understanding how the man on the street over there really felt about the ups and downs of that time.
It is a fairly quick read that will leave you with a clearer understanding of the Iranian people, something much needed as we try to decide how to approach our relations with them.
Interesting.......2006-12-16
Ms. Ebadi has a worthwhile story to tell. She certainly is a courageous woman! I can't catagorize this as a great book because I put it down several times and was not running to pick it up again. I don't understand the title at all. After reading the book I don't see Iran "awakening" at all. I see the author as someone either very clever in evading death, or just plain lucky. I agree with a previous reviewer who felt the author wrong in unfavorably judging Iranians who left after the revolution. Most of them were running for their lives, as perhaps she might have done. The author's own daughter left to study in Canada. It is a good book but I preferred Roya Hakakian's "Journey from the land of No."

Book Description
The writing is crisp and the messages funneled to the author, a lifelong student of the spirit, are clear: Mother Earth is desperately tired of human depredations and will do whatever is necessary to protect and balance herself. She tells us she will no longer tolerate human abuse and callousness. If humans are to survive as a species, she says, they must keep up with her as she evolves herself. But that there is hope for the human species is an essential message of this important and vital book. It teaches humankind that full participation of the entire Earth family is crucial to the survival of all species and even of Mother Earth herself. This seminal book provides do-it-yourself and do-it-together recipes for meeting and adapting to massive changes that will often seem like portents of the long-prophesied endtimes.

Hearing Gaia Sing Has Awakened Me.......2007-01-20
Fran Gatins' book, "Awakening With Mother Earth: Hearing Gaia Sing" was a wonderful, refreshing read. It made me stop and listen in my daily life to better hear what the Earth is telling us. The beautiful talk about the gift of dancing has me whirling through the house. What a great feeling! Thank you for this book.
Beautiful book of many strands.......2006-12-24
Reviewed by Louise Bickley for Reader Views (12/06)
The author's main point is stated on page 189 when Gaia says, ". . . It is the main point I wish to have completely clear: that all beings contain elements and aspects of all other beings and all physical forms emanate from me. Therefore, you can speak with each other." In other words, Mother Earth or Gaia wants it known that she is a real live breathing entity of her own and is evolving along with all of her children. Her children include every bit of creation within her domain--inside, outside and above.
I must admit that my first response to the premise of this book was skepticism; I thought it was preposterous. However as I read on it became more and more believable. I was struck by the author's own willingness to question the material coming through her. Ms. Gatins expresses her doubts over and over--wondering if this was authentic communication from Gaia or simply emanating from her imagination or subconscious mind. Gaia assures her over and over and, quite convincingly, I might add, that she is real and she is speaking. Finally by page 139 Gaia tells her to get over it--believe this communication is genuine. There are numerous books, films and treatises on the subject of ecology and environmentalism, but none as original and fresh as this book. The content is simple and complex, serious and whimsical, humorous and instructive.
Ms. Gatins beautifully weaves together numerous strands--spiritual truths, laws of physics, the many results of abuse to our Mother Earth and places them into a spiritual and moral imperative that leaves no room for doubt. Gaia says that everything sings! Song and dance are expressions of the joy of life and one of the best ways to honor, bless and give thanks to the Creator of all. I absolutely love the last sentence--"THEY got up and started to cha-cha to the music of the stars." Perhaps it is because singing and dancing or two of my most favorite things in this world. In any case it resonated with my whole being. I would not change a thing in "Awakening with Mother Earth." My only recommendation is for Ms. Gatins to keep listening and reporting what she learns.

An excellent and honest if horrifying picture of today's Iran........2007-10-19
An excellent and honest if horrifying picture of today's Iran. I found Ms. Ebadi's book as fascinating as Hillary Clinton's. An extremely smart and brave woman, Ms. Ebadi clearly loves her country and is ready to sacrifice her life for Iran. I was happy to read about the few improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens as well as changes in women's education in the Islamic republic, but it pained me to read about the human rights violations, the killings, and the tortures used by the mullahs on their own people. I spent 7 years in Iran before, during and after the revolution and left when Iraq threatened to bobmb Tehran. I loved Iran, its ancient history, beautiful poetry, and lovely countryside. But most of all I loved its friendly, hospitable, and talented people and to read that the nation's suffering wasn't over was very hard for me. However, it made me happy and proud to know that Iran, once more, produced a gem, and this time it was a woman, who despite the terror of the Islamic republic was
able to make her voice heard in the world and received a Nobel price!
Best book you might ever read.......2007-09-23
This is the best and the most honest version of the modern history of my country from the eyes of a brave educated woman who is not afraid to fight for what every one else is afraid to whisper. In her memoir, she does not leave out any detail of the atmosphere governing Iran. Living in the circumstances she describes in the book, I genuinely respect her for who she is. She is an icon every woman can look up to and That is why she is a Nobel prize winner. She has a story telling gift, making the book absolutely attractive and easy to follow. This book is a must read; she risked her life writing it and it needs audience: Iranian women and children need Shirin Ebadi and people who think like her. This is an outstanding book, unforgettable.
Inspirational Story.......2007-09-19
This is probably the best book that I have read this year. Shirin Ebadi tells of her brave defense of human rights in post-revoluationary Iran. Although she is a widely respected, famous Noble Peace Prize winner, she shows humility throughout. I also enjoyed reading her opinions on Iranian leaders, past and present. Highly recommended!
a great read.......2007-08-30
Ms. Ebadi crafts a compelling autobiography that draws the reader in like a novel. She brings us into the center of her experiences without crowing or being sanctimonious. In telling her own story, she also manages, in a fairly short book to present what I think is an objective history of Iran starting just prior to the 1953 coup and ending at the present.

Exactly as Advertised.......2005-09-02
This book is exactly what the title says, a collection of short stories about first time lesbian experiences. The stories are written by women, usually in the first person, and are filled with flowery imagery. This title takes a deep look, mostly through repetition, at the sensual and emotional sides of lesbianism.
Each story left me with a sense of admiration and respect for the virgins at the leaps of faith they made in order to live out their first experience. Certainly in light of the social taboo and potential rejection a journey into homosexuality has the potential to be a devastating occurrence. The women all know this but follow their hearts into relationships to intensely rewarding ends.
This book allowed me a window into my own wife's past as an experimental teenager. I thought it was amazing how closely her story mirrored some of the stories in this book. I would recommend this collection to anyone who thinks they are a lesbian or anyone who is in a relationship with a lesbian/past lesbian.
One last note of warning, this is not a hardcore/pornographic novel; if you are looking for something like that I would recommend "Penthouse Forum" magazines.
Depends on what you want it for..........2004-07-12
I found this collection to be standard. Like most erotica, this compilation has a few shining stars as well as a few stinkers, with most everything else falling in the middle.
One of the stories was mediocre in its editing: There were a few times where the author's repeated use of the same word distracted from the reading (After reading only 2 pages, I wanted to ring up the author and yell, "Buy a thesaurus!")
Another story was poorly paced: I wanted to sink my teeth into erotica and instead I got three pages of fruit salad recipes.
That said, I must give credit for a few good choices by the editor. One nod goes to the fact that she tried to create a balance of romance themes and hard core sexual stories. A second nod goes to her attempts to cater to a wide variety of sexual tastes and fetishes, from vanilla to S&M.
If you're in the mood for a decent collection of varied erotica to have on your bookshelf, this is a nice choice. If you're just looking for some reading to whack with, I suggest you save your money and surf up nifty dot org or some other web source.
Great stuff in here........2004-01-24
Whether you're a woman and are "bi curious" or you're a guy--there's no need to explain why men would like this book--Awakening the Virgin is a mind blowing and satisfying read about women and women. I've only read one other book that comes close to this one, "The Other Woman" by Kim Corum. I hope to find more becuase these stories are HOT.
*Whistles*.......2003-10-03
I don't even know what to say about this book but its great. Ever since reading the book it reminded me of the things that I thought were forgotten.
Anywayz this is a must in have in your collection since all the stories are real. All in all a great read.
Awesome book! A must read for all women........2003-02-07
This book was the most awesome book on lesbian relationships I have ever read. The stories are emotional and erotic! I loved every story and highly recommend this book to all women, whether you are straight, bi, or lesbian. This book shows how women relate on all levels, especially sexually. A real eye-opener for the novice or curious.

Customer Reviews:
Incredibly boring.......2007-01-04
I liked Curott's Book of Shadows enough to attempt this book. I don't know if I'll ever finish it. A little more that halfway through I finally had to admit that I was completely bored, I didn't like anyone in the story, and it was totally obvious how things would turn out anyway. The author comes across as a codependent doormat who pushes her way into a marriage because she liked the idea of being married, not because of her actual relationship. Her lover is terminally selfish and immature. The only reason Curott seems to fall for him is due to physical attraction and sex. As in her previous book, Curott's many friends are so superficially drawn it's impossible to keep straight who is who and what their individual characteristics are. The exception is Nona, who takes the roll of the perfectly enlightened teacher who always has to perfect tidbit of wisdom to impart at the perfect time then she silently withdraws to allow the author to make all her own mistakes. The conversations everyone has are incredibly pedantic and unrealistic. Like others have said, there are a few interesting ideas mixed in here and there, but as the book goes on, they become more and more infrequent. Perhaps if about half the book was edited out, it would be easier to get through.
Who cast the love spell?.......2006-12-08
If one of the author's goals was to punch a hole in the western wall between fact and fiction, she did an amazing job. The genre speaks for itself and is the perfect teaching venue. While reading I asked myself a number of questions: Can a metaphor really be a metamorphous? Is the author Phyllis channeling the authored Phyllis? Can a book about the magic of love also be a magic book? If so, the book is as much a love spell cast on the reader as it is about the main character casting a love spell in order to find the true love of her life.
Insightful and interesting, but not without fault..........2006-11-11
First and foremost, I found Curott's latest book to be a very interesting exploration of relationships. Relationships are hard work, and we all know it. But most books, particularly those with any kind of romantic theme, tend to glamorise sex, marriage and the relationship dynamic. I appreciated Currot's unflinching examination of her failed relationships and enjoyed journeying with her to the place where she realised that to attract the 'man of her dreams' she needed to first heal and accept herself.
Secondly, I found the exploration of the 'daemon' concept (one's own inner God and the masculine personality inside the feminine self) to be unique and having travelled part the way down the same road I recognised a lot of my own doubts in Currot's words.
However, as always, Currot's prose is overblown. As with 'Book of Shadows' she has a nasty habit of writing from the future. This means you get a lot of tiresome hints about characters - for example from almost the first introduction of Derek (Currot's husband and later ex-husband) the hints are dropping like boulders that the relationship isn't going to turn out well. But you have to read through about 100 pages of hints before old Derek finally gets the flick.
I also found Currot's desperation for a relationship and a baby to be annoying - I understand that most people feel this way (me included!) but it was played up so much that I really felt like slapping her and telling her to get a life.
I also agree with other reviewers who comment that Currot seems incapable of presenting herself as a flawed person - although she sees the hurts that need to be healed within herself, one gets the very strong impression that Derek was the reason for the failure of the marriage, and Currot is magically blessed. Character development is also very shallow - I like Nonna, but really, she's just too perfect! It would have been nice to see Currot come to some of the ideas that Nonna presented herself, rather than appearing to have them delivered on a silver platter via Nonna.
Ultimately I recommend this book and have chosen to give it 4 stars (although I would have chosen 3.5 if possible) because it is unique and some of the ideas are well presented and the self analysis is certainly much higher than in 'Book of Shadows'. One thing that did confuse me was the ending - did Roark just disappear or what?
Enjoy the Journey.......2006-03-15
Sometimes you wish for something or someone and they appear and then you find out it is not all it was meant to be. Better sooner that later, we all hope, but whichever way, this book confirms that you are in a middle of a long process. A long one, but not one you should see as boring or bad. That's the point. As any good book should, `The Love Spell' will remind you that you are not alone in your `crazy' life and you can manage it greatly, and at times that is comforting. It is why we read certain books, watch certain films, listen to certain music etc. `The Love Spell' asks you to dream, to fully participate in life, to get to know yourself, what you can do, and it also reminds you not to be so hard on yourself. When you read `The Love Spell', you might smile and nod your head with that `been there' look, but you will also get inspired, not just to search for the one love, but to appreciate your life - its mysterious ways.
Not just "Girl Talk".......2006-03-10
Love Spells is not just another romance novel. It also is not just a Girl Talk. Phyllis Curott shares her deepest self with her readers. How a women feels aout sex, courtship, and love.
While erotic it is not vulgar. It tells of feelings that are normally shred only in a womens diary or with her closest female friends.
It pulls aside the vail that has kept a womens side secret for so many years. While written about women by a women this book is worth reading by men as well.
To often men are ignorant about what a woman feels, needs, want and dreams of. As a 66 year old male I can tell you that we have too much pride and ego to ask let alone listen to those whom we believe we know so much from talking with the other "guys" or reading mens magizines. Quite a bit of the time w get more misinformation then knowledge. The women on the other han has been raised not o volunteer th information This has caused a wide gulf between the two genders. A gulf that Ms Curott has sought to fill by having the courage to address th most intimate sides of the female experiance.
I personally believe that every manshoul read this book and buy an etra copy fothe women in his life it will start conversations made by socioty too long secret
Book Description
A felicitous and fresh retelling of the story of the emergence of American nationalism! By any criteria the years following the Peace of Ghent, a period inaugurated by what has been superficially called " the era of good feelings," must be considered a time of exceptional growth and development in the United States. Above all, it may be considered a time of the evolution and ripening of American nationalism. It is the special virtue of Dangerfield's brilliant synthesis of the period that he manages to keep the focus on this central theme--the contest between the economic nationalism expounded by Henry Clay and John Quincy Adams and the democratic nationalism exemplified by the partisans of Andrew Jackson. That he does so without neglecting America's role in world affairs and particularly the growing economic rivalry with Great Britain, nor without minimizing the parts played by the leading actors on the national stage, attests the balanced judgment and sense of proportion that are evident throughout the volume. It is the confrontation of American economic nationalism with the Liberal Toryism of Lord Liverpool and William Huskisson that this book delineates with exceptional brilliance and depth. Dangerfield, a master craftsman, skillfully weaves many different threads into one magnificent tapestry.
Book Description
"Perhaps this autobiography will change the course of my life. This is something new for me. I have never before examined my life seriously." -from the autobiography of "Esther," nineteen years old, written in 1939
The candid and passionate writings in these autobiographies not only reveal the personal struggles, ambitions, and dreams of fifteen young Polish Jews in the 1930s, they also offer remarkable insight into the nature of ordinary Jewish life in Poland during the years between the world wars. Later authors often view this moment through lenses tinted by nostalgia or horror. But these young writers, unaware of the catastrophic future, tell their life stories with the urgency and fervor of adolescents, coming of age during a period of manifold new opportunities and challenges.
The autobiographies presented in the volume are selected from hundreds that were written for contests in the 1930s conducted by the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, then based in Vilna. The words of the selected nine male and six female authors now speak across the chasm of history, providing unique testimony on Jewish life in the final years before the Holocaust.
Book Description
In 1909, a boy of fourteen years was designated the savior of our age by the mystic leader of the Theosophical Society. Sent from his native India to study at the finest school in Britain, the charismatic youth was groomed for the messianic role of World Teacher—a mantle he would ultimately cast off, unleashing a storm of controversy within the spiritual community. And through inner doubts and physical agony—through bitter trials of the mind, the body, and the soul—he would follow his own path to enlightenment and become a shining beacon of joy and truth to millions the world over.

Exceptional biography of an exceptional person.......2002-08-08
I've been reading several of Krishnamurti's books before reading this biography of his early years, through age 38, and definitely consider this must reading for anyone who has been studying his philosophy. Here in the earlier stages of his life, one can see the elements that shaped the man and his philosophy.
Mary Luytens, the author of this biography, was a close friend of his and she refers to herself in the third person several times through the book. Her mother was active in the Theosophical Society directed by Mrs. Besant during J. Krishnamurti's childhood and young adult years.
As the eighth son born to a family of the Brahmin caste in India, he was automatically given the name of Krishnamurti. A horoscope was immediately cast for him by an Indian astrologer, and needless to say, it predicted that he would be a singularly important spiritual influence.
This is a fascinating account of those early years, and of how the Theosophical Society gained control of his upbringing, and cast him in the role of the great world spiritual leader whose advent the society predicted. The author details events of this period and the reader will see how Krishnamurti, although under the tutelage of this group, developed an independent spirit and an independent philosophy, and eventually stepped out of the role created for him.
The emphasis throughout the book is on the biographical events and not on the eventual philosophy. For this reason, I feel that the person familiar with the philosophy will get more from this book than will one who hasn't read this man's writings.
I believe anyone who is spiritually attuned will gain a tremendous insight through this book.
A very interesting story........2001-11-23
This is a remarkable and strange story, told by a person close to Krishnamurti. A young man is taken from his family in India (seemingly at random) and trained to be a "world teacher" of Theosophy. After several years of traveling around the world, having fun with his friends, meditating, and developing doubts, he has an intense and torturous mystical experience. He comes to the conclusion that the only salvation is that we find within ourselves, and strikes out on his own.
I can see why the Dalai Lama likes Krishnamurti. His own autobiography tells a story that is similiar in many respects -- a lonely young god-king who finds himself, but also shows an attractively human side along the way. (In the D. L.'s case, he tinkered with watches rather than cars.)
The author knew Krishnamurti when both were young, and she was in love with him. She's evidently still in love, yet manages to tell Krishnamurti's story in an honest manner, including faults and errors as well as a bit of hero-worship. While I sympathized with him and found him an attractive human being in some ways, I can't say I came away admiring K quite as much as the author clearly does. As a youth, he seemed to me (being bourgois at heart) like a lonely and mixed up young man who needed a real job and a real family more than anything. After a long, slow build-up, K's mystic experience is described in painful detail. Like Mohammed gurus like Muktananda and Sai Baba, it was a painful and bizarre experience that even the principles thought might involve evil spirits. But then the story takes an unexpected twist. Rather than launching jihad, or founding an ashram with himself as God, K sets out to teach the world that God -- or "life" -- is no more (or not much more) his monopoly than that of anyone else.
Given Occam's razor, where should we slice? The author gives little reason to assume that K's grand pronouncements at this stage are true. She points out, for example, that after his experience, he was still capable of accusing her, falsely, of having an affair with a married man. Nor do the "un-dogmas" given in this book, at least, strike me as extraordinarily deep. Truth is "unconditioned" and "pathless," organized creeds are "crystalized" and "dead." "There is neither good nor evil. Good is that of which you are afraid; evil is that of which you are not afraid." These are cliches in some circles, and strike me as the kind of sophism that is just iconoclastic enough to seem profound to mild intellectual rebels. One can only be called bold for questioning one's own dogmas, not those of someone else.
Many of K's ideas given here appear to me to have been influenced by the Dharmapada and Zen Buddhism. People couldn't live with such an individual self-help form of Buddhism 2600 years ago. The author seems to show (see what happens to the other characters in the book) that they can't live with it today, either. (Even if self-salvation "works" -- or is the highest goal -- which I doubt, especially the latter.) Tell myself, "I am one of the strong ones. I can save myself." Or is that my pride speaking? Which means, I am most lost of all? K himself seemed to entertain similar doubts, at least early on. His mystic experience may have assured him, while I, frankly, was left wondering why.
This book is mainly the story of K's early life, not his teachings, however. It is a well-told and touching story. It gives an inside view of the Theosophy society, and portrays the main characters with sympathy and, most the time, kindness. (Sometimes to the point of naivitee.)
author, Jesus and the Religions of Man
chronicles the early story of a remarkable man.......2000-06-04
The first of two books about the man groomed for messiahship by those who took him for the reincarnated World Teacher, the man who later dissolved the Order of the Star, gave back the wealth he'd been given, and told the world it was all bunk: "Truth is a pathless land..."
Book Description
What Diane Wilson reveals about the inner workings of the closed Watchtower Society will shock the average person who assumes the polite, well-dressed people who pass out leaflets are much like any other conservative religious group. Wilson contends that membership in the Jehovah's Witnesses demands obedience bordering on psychological enslavement and complete suppression of individuality--yet prohibits the questioning of the teachings of the Watchtower Society.
Her engrossing first-hand account will be of great interest to former Witnesses, students of cult phenomena, anyone who has ever experienced an abusive relationship, those who want to learn more about what compels people to enter this group, and all who have ever had contact with Jehovah's Witnesses.

Review from a JW.......2007-09-25
I read some of this book a while back for only one reason. My mom knew Diane, because SHE was in OUR Santa Clara South congregation. Do you know where ALL those people that Diane talks about in her book are? They are out of the truth! Yes, ironic as it may seem, most of the witnesses in the congregation that Diane was in are not even Jehovah's witnesses anymore! It just goes to show that Jehovah takes care of his organization when there are bad seeds in the congregation, hyprocritical and demanding, unreasonable people as are mentioned in her book. Well they are all gone. I'm in that same congregation today and if anyone was to compare them to the one back then, they would see a dramatic transformation. The utter opposite.
It is a shame to cut off ones relationship with Jehovah God because of imperfect people that may seep into the congregation. But Jehovah always makes sure to cleanse his organization from such ones. My mom suffered an ulcer from these people pressuring her but she trusted in Jehovah, not allowing them to tear her relationship with God. Today she has so much blessings and has experienced proof of God's spirit.
Diane goes and blames the society because of these people's problems, people that were unable themselves to stay in the truth. No man has a right to judge but Jehovah--time and time again I have heard this all my life in meetings and articles by the Watchtower. These people who judged are no longer there.
Also Jehovah's witnesses don't even believe in hell, pergertory, which other people of religions may be in constant fear of; and they dont ever bear arms like Christendom. There have been more wars in the name of religion, and none of these wars did Jehovahs witnesses ever partake in.
This organization is not a cult because they dont follow a man leader, they follow the teachings of Jesus only. Cults generally don't survive either, but this organization has been growing year by year. They don't "control minds," they reccommend you read the bible on your own everyday, and they offer evidence from the scriptures and allow you to ask questions, unlike some churches where people can't even ask the pastors question, let alone get to know them. The witnesses are against self-condemning thoughts and feeling guilty when their is already repentance, their main concern is to encourage and build up. Ask the majority of Jehovah's witnesses who have not allowed a couple of self-righteous individuals to tear them down. You need to see Jehovahs witnesses as a whole, not for a tiny handful of bad seeds. The majority spent hours across the entire globe preaching the good news of the kingdom (which is fulfilling the prophecy at Mattew 24:14, the only religion who have) only because of love for neighbor and God and nothing else. They don't get paid, their not controlled, they really want to. I should know as I have been a Jehovah's witness all my life and the last thing I know they would do is try and manipulate. This book is just an emotional spew and she just let irrational people make her irrational.
I know my review will not be 'helpful' to those anti-JWs out there but among all other reviews for this book this is the most helpful regardless, because i know the facts.
Must read for all ex-JWs.......2007-06-12
Would be great if all JWs would read this, but that's not going to happen. A great validation for an ex-JW!
AN OUTSTANDING ENTRY IN THIS GENRE!.......2006-12-12
The publishers of this book are well named, for they bring to us the Sacred Fire, just as the Prometheus of Myth did. I've read every book written by former Jehovah's Witnesses, but this one is the most engrossing and well-written. It's also the most challenging to the world-view of all Biblical literalists. Only one other book, Jehovah Unmasked, has done as good a job. That's a tremendous compliment to this book! Prometheus does not give us yet another "My life moved inexorably toward Jesus once I left the JW sect" book. Very refreshing. An excellent read.

Eyes Wide Open Now!.......2006-08-14
I have a publication from the Watchtower Society called "The Truth That Leads to Eternal Life". On pg. 13 it counsels, "We need to examine, not only what we personally believe, but also what is taught by any religious organization with which we may be associated. If we are lovers of the truth, there is nothing to fear from such an examination." So I decided to put the Watchtower Society itself to this test. Jehovah's Witnesses seem to be so fearful of Ms. Wilson's book, that I read it to see what the stir was all about. And I am so glad I did! I think JWs are so against Awakening of a Jehovah's Witness because it reveals shocking information about the Watchtower that JWs would prefer to ignore. This book is not a book of allegations--it is a book of facts. It is also the author's personal experiences while a JW for 25 years. And it backs up its statements about the Watchtower with quotes (including page numbers)from the Watchtower's own publications. Like for example the Watchtower's instruction to its women to act respectfully to one's own rapist! And the book makes clear how crazy-making the Society's doctrinal contradictions are. I am grateful for this well-written book, which has opened my eyes so I can at last see this religious organization for the manmade cult that it is.
