I have to tell you that I am a great admirer. I ve read a lot of his work. I didnt like this one particularly. The story line was flat, the characters were not developed the way he usually does. But still the beauty of his writting is impossible to ignore.

Esta novela llena de relatos de vivencias de un octogenario personaje que se enamora de una muchacha adolescente que se inicia en un burdel, es muy interesante cómo el autor hace gala de su ingenio para jugar con el tiempo dejando algunos entretenidos acertijos a sus lectores...

I never received this book, I also send back 2 books (Medical Terminology) as for some reason the same book was ordered 3 times and charged 3 times to my account. I got tired of calling and trying to get a refund, one book got returned to me saying that it wasn't Amazons, the other you kept it and never got a refund. I am not happy wiht this type of service, I will not buy any more books from Amazons and I am telling everyone how is it that Amazon's works. I will follow up with the DA to investigate to see if that is how Amazons does business with all customers of this is was just bad luck, but I never received a response from Amazons, therefore I might take other ways to investigate.

Saramago's style is just delicious, and he tells his life like a tale. Humble, too humble even for a nobel prize winner, and admirably humble in comparison to his homologues.
If you know Saramago, you will not be disappointed by this autobiography (with pictures in the end.) If you don't know him yet, this is an excellent piece to start.

Evolving experience.......2007-01-18

Desde un principio, y al estrenarse la película acá en Lima, solamante el título me creó la curiosidad de leer antes el libro...Luego de bastante tiempo, pude hacerlo, y debo decir que la experiencia fue simplemente increible.
La manera en que el autor pone en detalle la narración de la historia, los nombres, los datos históricos, la descripción de los sucesos, lugares, personas, nombres y apellidos....me hicieron creer que en realidad, era una biografía de una geisha, y que todos los personajes eran reales. En una oportunidad, traté de buscar el famoso pintor que retrató a Sayuri....y me dí con la mala noticia de que todo era ficticio. Sin embargo, este libro a despertado en mi una curiosidad y fascinación por la cultura japonesa, y cada día me encuentro a mi misma investigando más sobre las geishas, Gion, y Kioto en el internet.
Recomiendo este libro a todas las personas, a quienes les gusta los libros tipo documentales, a los eternos románticos, a los que les gusta la cultura japonesa, a los fans de las geishas....en realidad se que a todos los va a cautivar.

Fantastico libro... una traduccion excelente! Hace tiempisimo que un libro no me permitia dejarlo hasta acabarlo. Cautivadora narracion que facilita no solo el sumergirse dentro del mundo tan privado de las geishas, sino indudablemente en el de la cultura japonesa. Se lo recomiendo con los ojos cerrados...disfrutelo!

A Wonderful Novel.......2002-10-04

This novel is not just the story of Sayuri, a 9 years old peasant girl sold into slavery to a Kyoto okiya as a servant girl, but a complete story of the geisha culture at Gion, a Kyoto neighborhood, before WWII. This novel give us a lot of details about the geishas make up, dressing code, education, rituals and rules, behavior, rivalries and envies between them, their expectations and dreams, etc. An excellent narrative which discover the unknown world of the geishas in the first half of the xx century Imperial Japan.

Como puede haber alguien tan imbecil de comparar este material basura con una novela de Garcia Marquez ????? No recuerdo cuando fue la ultima vez que lei algo peor que (Yo Soy el Diego). Es la historia de la vida de un GORDO DROGADICTO TRAMPOSO, contada en desorden y con excesos de prepotencia y despotismo. Es claro que este libro no fue escrito con "La Mano de Dios".
Espero encontrarme algun dia a Bragagnini "El chepo" y romperle la cara, antes de que inmigracion vaya al restaurante donde trabaja y lo deporte de vuelta a su porqueria de pais.

I saw this in the library one day and took it out. All I knew about Maradona was the "Hand Of God" and solo goal in the same match. I decided to try this book."

It's a bit hard to digest this book as it's translation means it may not have the same feel asin it's original language. I had Maradona slang and words, which gave it a great personal feel and made it seem better. Maradona just tells it as he experienced it, which does make it better than I expected. I do see his point in some bits, especially when he mentioned how cocaine DOESN'T help your energy like steroids does, if my memory remembers my science right, because if that's true, he shouldn't have gooten banned.

It's not too long, not too short and has some humourous situations in it, which lightened the subject matter. I would like to see him bring out a new version with new chapters of whats happened since. This book is good as it does give you food for thought, which Maradona probably enjoyed.

Don't expect to find in this book Diego's advice about not making the same mistakes he made, or Diego explicitly expressing his point of view about a specific topic/event in his life.
This book is the life of Maradona told By Maradona, it is simply the truth told with emotions and feelings about his life since he was little until he retired. You will find a detailed compendium/compilation of facts about Maradona's life/career, told the way Diego remembers and feels these happened.
You can feel his love and devotion for football when you read this book, because throughout his life all that surrounded Diego was football.
