Book Description

“This book is… my personal search ‘for the face of the Lord.’” —Benedict XVI

In this bold, momentous work, the pope—in his first book written as Benedict XVI—seeks to salvage the person of Jesus from recent “popular” depictions and to restore Jesus’ true identity as discovered in the Gospels. Through his brilliance as a theologian and his personal conviction as a believer, the pope shares a rich, compelling, flesh-and-blood portrait of Jesus and incites us to encounter, face-to-face, the central figure of the Christian faith.

From Jesus of Nazareth… “the great question that will be with us throughout this entire book: But what has Jesus really brought, then, if he has not brought world peace, universal prosperity, and a better world? What has he brought? The answer is very simple: God. He has brought God! He has brought the God who once gradually unveiled his countenance first to Abraham, then to Moses and the prophets, and then in the wisdom literature—the God who showed his face only in Israel, even though he was also honored among the pagans in various shadowy guises. It is this God, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, the true God, whom he has brought to the peoples of the earth. He has brought God, and now we know his face, now we can call upon him. Now we know the path that we human beings have to take in this world. Jesus has brought God and with God the truth about where we are going and where we come from: faith, hope, and love.”

5 out of 5 stars As a father teaches his children.......2007-10-18

Jesus of Nazareth
In language that is readily understood, despite often tackling intricate exegetical issues, the Holy Father shows his loving desire to open the pages of Scripture for his children anxious to have a deeper personal relationship with the historical Jesus. In explaining certain portions of the life of Christ as written in the gospels in the context of the total biblical treasure, Pope Benedict draws upon both Catholic and non-Catholic resources to make Jesus appear in the mind of the reader in the fullness of His Messianic mission. To read this very enjoyable book is to come face to face with the one Person in the history of mankind who matters most in understanding the big questions of life: Who am I? and Where am I going?

3 out of 5 stars Go slowly and surely.......2007-10-17

I will first begin by saying that I am not Catholic. I'll continue by commenting that I am an ignoramus when it comes to Catholicism. In fact, I will push that fence even further by calling myself a denominationally ignorant Christian. It is a study that I haven't bothered to engage myself with, but is perhaps an undertaking that I should seriously consider. I grew up in the Reformed Church of America, which may be called Protestant or not. That should roughly say how deep my ignorance goes. Of the little knowledge I've learned so far about Catholicism, I think I can at least outline the controversy between a few doctrinal concerns, such as "grace alone" and "faith + works", which appears to be a consistent theme pitting Protestantism against the Catholic Church. Maybe that statement itself is horribly wrong. The bottom line is that I don't particularly much care about the distinctions right now. I decided to read Pope Benedict XVI's "Jesus of Nazareth" to be enlightened, and came away both enlightened and challenged. Thus, I believe the three star rating to be a compromising "middle ground" between my praises and struggles with this book.

First off, I admire Pope Benedict (previously Cardinal Ratzinger). He promotes a strong Christianity rather than a weak one, or one that is continally struck dead by compromises. He calls this book his personal search for the face of the Lord. Who doesn't pursue a personal search for His face?

With this book, he attempts a thorough and scholarly interpretation of Jesus Christ as presented in the Gospels. This book isn't a light read, and truthfully it took me quite a bit of time to absorb all of its arguments. His research is very extensive, and some resources are quite bewildering and obscure (another reviewer noted how many are quite unknown). The scope of the book is to be largely commended, and the work and skill required for such a work is impressive. He is a spiritual and intellectual role model for all followers of Christ.

This book is a wealthy resource for many unique arguments. It makes an interesting case, bit by bit, from different platforms, such as the careful relationship drawn between the Old and New Testaments and Benedict's delicate descriptions of Jesus' baptism and temptation, and what they mean for us. Its insights are at least tightly reasoned, and Benedict's evidentiary support can be very powerful at times. He also takes time to answer objections raised by liberal theologians, even confronting some of Nietzsche's criticism against the faith. There are sprinkles of gold glittered in these mountains, and you cannot see them if you want to rush along.

A previous reviewer noted the theological differences between the Pope's book and his Lutheran background. Although I cannot properly comment on such a topic, I find it the most important point to be considered. Any work in biblical scholarship, no matter which position of authority the writer is attempting to hold as his mantle, can only be judged against the foundation of one source: the biblical Scriptures. I think Rodboomboom stressed this as a crucial issue in his review, whether or not his disagreements are well-justified, or whether they are problematic. "Jesus of Nazareth" is a thick work, not in page number, but in content. It cannot be touched lightly, or sped through in a short amount of time. A slow journey should be planned before you wander off into such a dense forest. Keep your Bible in hand. This is a very worthwhile book, but unfortunately one that is difficult to digest.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Story Of How One Holy Individual Discovered Who Jesus Is.......2007-10-13

As a Christian I read two types of books...Leadership and Christian. There are MANY books written about personal reflections of who Jesus is. There are very few, if any, that base their personal beliefs on the words of Christ himself, as He told us through His own Words. This is an awesome journey through the Bible, old and new Testaments, to witness who really was this "Man" called Jesus. If you believe in the Bible you cannot go wrong reading this book. If you believe in Jesus you will gain additional insights into who He really was. If you are just interested to learn more about Christianity, this book will not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars A pleasant change.......2007-10-12

Although I learn much at my parish thru sermons and the occasional "special topics" seminars, I purchased this book to learn more about Jesus and his few years of ministry and public life. I wanted to have something to answer to the critics, to counter some of the nonsense about Jesus.

Before I read "Jesus of Nazareth", I wondered how Jesus fulfilled so many promises in such a short time while on earth. It doesn't say in the book if He had a list - but I certainly would have needed one. It turns out He was fulfilling promises made long-ago by his Father that were recorded in a few good books. You might have heard of them: Genesis, Exodus, etc. After his short public life, Jesus' words and actions laid the groundwork for the next books that would follow.

This book won't teach you how to debate a critic of religion. But you might learn enough to be able to smile back at them with a quiet satifaction that only knowledge and truth can provide.

So, go ahead and smile.

5 out of 5 stars Corrective.......2007-10-12

I will have to reread this book several times. It is a wonderful antidote to the stuff we studied after the Vatican Council. Though much of the stuff was exciting, I sensed that some "theologians" were convinced that the scriptures meant anything other than what they actually said. Christianity taught witout content is a major problem in the Church.
The Holy Father is a gifted theologian and teacher, who can explain church teachings in a convincing way. I wish I had him as a teacher but my latin was not that good. His books provide the good theology needed for a sound spiritual life.
This book is a wonderful gift for educated Catholics who have neglected their education in theology and the contemplative tradition of the Church. The book is corrective and refreshing in that it written by a man who understands the scriptures, the Greek philosophers, and the Fathers of the Church.
The pressure to make the Catholic Church like all the others is illustrated in the innane comments in the media-parrallels some of the liberal theologians.

5 out of 5 stars Audio CD review.......2007-07-20

I have to admit, at first it was a little annoying listening to Raymond changing his voice to imitate Mother. He sounds much more like Jonathan Winters' "Grandma Frickert" character than Mother Angelica.

But the content of this book is of course so good that I was able to tune that out and just become absorbed in Mother's timeless wisdom. Good job, Raymond!

1 out of 5 stars Wonderful Words Yet Hurtful!.......2007-07-16

Her Words are worderful, yet could be very hurtful. Since she's giving us some thoughts to think about, let me give you some thoughts to think about.

What about the family in Tacoma, Washington, whose 12 or 13 year old girl was suddenly grabbed after watching fireworks and whose dead bady was found a few days later! Should they be giving the experience over to the Lord! Don't they have the right,at least for awhile, to be FOROCIOUSLY MAD AT THE LORD before they come to the point of being able to give it over to Him or perhaps would that be an example of praying to much for ourselves as Sister likes to say so much!

What about the lady who was dieing on the floor of the convenience store and people were walking over her and some even taking pictures? Wouldn't she have the right to be TREMENDOUSLY MAD AT GOD before she could give it over to Him, or, as Sister is so fond of saying, would that be praying to too much for ourselves?

What about the rape victims, the children who are in abusive situations within their own homes, etc.? The way that she sounds is that those of us who are in trouble can INSTANTLY give EVERYTHING over to the Lord.

I'm sorry Sister Angelica, sometimes that's not possible for many reasons. Sometimes the reasons are due to Post Tramatic Stress requireing a therapist and/or psychologist for medications.

Sometimes the Lord will use various types of professionals to help bring a person to the point where he or she can give everything over to Him. Within your book, you seem to recognize the fact that we should give everything over to Him, however, you never mention the need that sometimes that requires the use professionals and sometimes, depending upon the individual involved and the type of situation, even with the use of a professionals and even prayer, it might take a year or more to completely give everything over to the Lord. Sometimes, that's just the way the Lord's made us.

5 out of 5 stars A Guide to Life.......2007-07-04

Mother Angelica, through her frankness and wit, provides us answers to the questions we all seem to ask at one time or another about life. She is a genius! Read her biography as well if you can. This book will give you information on how to improve your life, and her biography will give you the motivation. Her show on EWTN was a gem. They play reruns - catch it if you can to see her in action. She is simply stunning.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastically inspiring!.......2007-07-03

Arroyo does a marvelous job of compiling this beautiful and inspiring book on Mother Angelica's everyday spirituality and life lessons. You can tell he was close to her and knew how to put this all together. This book was so inspiring to me because it speaks from such a practical stand point. Her lessons are not deep and theological but practical and useful for our everyday life struggles. I highly recommend it no matter what religious persuasion you may come from!

They bilk the parishioners, as the priest live in a lap of luxury surrounded by gold. Everyone knows the Vatican has Billions of dollars, but keeps it's book secret so we can not know how many billions they have. Meanwhile, in the churches where the victims want justice, they just throw up their hands and say "we are bankrupt". The Bible says that a Priest or "Bishop" MUST be a married man. The people who let these pedophile priest jump from parish to parish to get fresh kids should also be thrown in jail. The most serious problem however, is that the Catholic church has people fooled into believing it is a "Christian Church", it is far from it. They call their own shots calling themselves "Infallible", meaning whatever they say or do can't be wrong. I am somewhat puzzled by the people who still attend there. They rape kids, then covered it up, why are you still a part of that organization? You should never confess to a priest, that is putting someone between you and Jesus. Jesus is the only mediator, if you read the real bible KJV, it will tell you the truth. The catholic Manuscripts were created by the Alexandrians, another cult found in Egypt. To top things off, the current Pope even swore in before as a Hitler Nazi Oath as a youth. This church isn't Christian, it just pays "lip service" to let everyone think they are. The priest are living in the lap of Luxury, while the victims live without reparations. My heart goes out to all the victims of the Catholic Church. Please stand up for the victims, and do not continue to look the other way because you are also guilty of association if you say and do nothing.

A well-communicated summary of Roman Catholic doctrine and tradition. A good start for anyone interested in getting past the basics in preparation for further serious study. A handy resource for those who simply want a basic understanding of Catholic doctrine and practice. The approach seems to be one of simply reporting the facts without much emotional attachment by the authors and in that respect it seemed to be lacking some of the impact it might otherwise have. But such an approach may be exactly what most readers are looking for in this genre.

Book Description

Internationally renowned motivational teacher, spiritual instructor, and popular theologian Caroline Myss has created a transcendent work of unique insight and revelation in Entering the Castle. This exciting new teaching of contemporary mysticism is also a brilliant synthesis of the psychology of consciousness and of Eastern and Western mystical traditions. Myss provides a highly original inner path to self-knowledge -- which is also the road into a spiritual knowledge of God and your own soul -- as she reveals a necessary external path, one that takes you out into the world to serve God and others as a mystic without a monastery -- without having to retreat into total silence, self-denial, or isolation.

As her main template for this extraordinary, modern spiritual journey, Myss uses the beloved, revered writings of The Interior Castle by Teresa of Ávila. Adapting Teresa's vision of the soul as a beautiful crystal castle with many floors, or mansions, and many rooms within those mansions, Myss guides us from room to room, helping us meet different aspects of our self, our soul, and our spirit -- preparing us for the ultimate encounter with God and our own divinity. Through intense practices and methods of spiritual inquiry adapted for contemporary life, she helps us to develop our personal powers of prayer, contemplation, and intuition and to ascend the seven levels of soul knowledge that build an ever stronger interior castle of our own -- a soul of strength and stamina.

As in all her books, Myss also recounts stories of profoundly moving real-life experiences -- of her own, as well as of her students and of renowned spiritual figures -- that bring home the universal truth of her insights. Presiding over the entire book and journey are the great mystics, ancient and contemporary, of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Hinduism with their inspiring lives and discerning spirits. And over all, the benevolence, truth, and gentle and tough love of Teresa of Ávila shine through.

Doubtless Myss's most deeply personal, revealing, compassionate, and transforming book yet, Entering the Castle is a comprehensive guidebook for the journey of your life -- a journey into the center of your soul. There, peace, God, and a fearless bliss wait for you to discover them...and claim them for your own.

2 out of 5 stars A New Dogma For Mysticism?.......2007-10-19

Caroline really misses it. That so many find this book worthy of recommendation as "insightful" only reflects the profoundly disturbed state of consciousness that animates contemporary western culture. Little wonder that nearly 1 in 5 adults in the USA are on medication for mood disorders.

It is little wonder that a practicing psychologist would recommend this book, I'm sure it is doing wonders for business. How pleasing that the minion of merchants peddling their wares on "spiritual progress" can all stand together and agree that indeed this is the height of conscious realization and the deepest profound wisdom.

This book is richly steeped in the dogma of Catholicism. It resounds with contradiction and resonates with the bi-polar schism that perpetuates the need for "spiritual guidance" and "healing" in the first place. It is severely autobiographical, revealing the author's pathological struggle and preoccupation with power and arrogance.

Ms. Myss' intention seems genuine and heart felt enough, but alas, one is inclined to feel compassion for anyone offering an "authoritative" explanation concerning the mystery of being. As all genuine mystics know, the experience that characterizes mysticism is ineffable, and yet here is entire book on the subject. Imagine that!

5 out of 5 stars Carry this book with you on your spiritual journey..........2007-09-12

Carolyn Myss coined the phrase, "We are becoming mystics without monasteries", which is the essence of this wonderful book, based on St. Teresa of Avila's seven interior mansions. However, the book is not meant to be a quick read - it is a roadmap that each one of us may take into the interior place of our soul, our castle, where we can purify, blend, and distill the gold from within, so that we may shine our light out into the world. Take this along on your journey of spiritual growth and service.

5 out of 5 stars Caroline Myss at her best.......2007-08-25

If you've enjoyed and benefitted from any of Caroline Myss' previous work, then definitely get a hold of this. I've always found her voice particularly reassuring and inspiring, so the CD is probably your best bet if you're like me. Entering the Castle is a fascinating modern interpretation of Teresa of Avila's most creative work. Myss's psychological and spiritual adaptation and her explanations and instructions cannot be underrated. I hesitated on this, but am glad now that I've taken the next step on the Myss journey.

3 out of 5 stars Good for some.......2007-08-14

I did not care for this book, but I am giving it 3 stars because I think that it might be a valuable book for some people, especially if you are Catholic or Christian, as this really forms the basis for this book. Carolyn makes an attempt to draw in other faiths by mentioning Buddhism now and then, but she makes it clear that practices such as meditation and repeating mantras just doesn't cut it as a mystical practice. I'm sure the Buddhists & Hindus worldwide are supprised to know that they aren't *really* doing a spiritual practice. Also, if you are New Age or New Thought then you know darn well that you don't want to keep focusing on "the dark night of the soul" and all the other fearsome stuff that Myss dwells on or you're going to attract it and who wants that?

Anyway, I think there are many other ways to get closer to your God than this, but if you've already got that focus on sin, humility, surrender, redemption and such and love to journal and do lots of exercises then this might be your cup of tea.

2 out of 5 stars Lost in Translation.......2007-07-29

It takes 100 pages before you enter the first mansion. Some of the material in the beginning is important, but I'm sorry, I just could not connect with the author's own personal experiences. Some of them just sounded to "new age" to me. Superficial is the word that comes to mind although I do not want to to discredit the author's experiences.

The author brings up a good point about the need for deeply spiritual people in the world. The author uses the term "monks without monasteries". It is a catchy phrase, but it confuses the purposes of different vocations. Both vocations call for personal sacrifices (a word not much used in this book), but they are directed toward different goals. The author belittles, or does not recognize the secondary function of monasteries as a conveyor belt to drive and supplement, to support and re-energize the spirituality of those working in the world. (The primary function of monasteries is beyond the book and this book review.)

It seems like the author is specifically looking for some kind of extraordinary experience of God. We all are. But St. John of the Cross and even St. Teresa of Avila herself, along with many other genuine mystics, urge not to seek, or even hope for, these kinds of *extraordinary* experiences. Although they can and do reinforce faith, they become distractions and obstacles for "the one thing necessary"--to love God for God, not for God's consolations and gifts.

There was also an alarming tone of lack of poverty of spirit throughout the book. The author waits too late to address humility in the book, and then it was a bit shallow. The author treats it almost as a drawback or turnoff to reading any further in the book. In too many places I wrote in the margin, "What about grace?" (One definition of grace, avoiding much Christian connotation, is the gift to see old things in a new way. It is a gift and not something that can be self-manufactured.) The author makes it sound like *you* yourself are responsible for working your way through all the mansions of the castle. Yes, the first couple mansions require *work* on your part, but even through these, God is still doing the *real work*. You have to show up and choose to cooperate. Yes, you have to do your homework, but only grace (energy, power, or whatever term one uses) from God will empower you to do so, not your own volition. Without sincere, deep, and total humility, St. Teresa said that it is impossible to progress through the mansions regardless of how much one wants. (Read Johannes Baptist Metz's small book, Poverty of Spirit if you really want to understand humility and realize/live true poverty of spirit.)

In a spirit of ecumenical/all-faiths dialog, the author has sacrificed the beauty and depth of St. Teresa's original, albeit Christian, metaphors and symbols. The author decides to use the word "reptiles" instead of St. Teresa's word "snakes" for evils and worldly temptations. The word "love", although loaded with connotations, seems to be used very sparingly by the author. St. Teresa's word for God, the object of her total desire and commitment, was her "Beloved". This one missing word makes entering the Interior Castle more of an abstraction or exercise of improving ones self-esteem instead of the infinitely more personal and real seeking union with God.

The questions the author asks within each mansions do assist one along the proper path as outlined by St. Teresa. One should be aware that there are many other questions (and rooms) within each mansion that have not *yet* been explored by the book. It is also important to remember that it is not a sequential, linear progression as the author notes.

The detailed imagery the author uses to describe each room and mansion may help many people, but remember the whole idea of the Interior Castle was to be a metaphor/symbol for the *real* journey. Each room and mansion is just a signpost to where you are suppose to go, to some place to visit within. Do not get attached to the signposts, to the imagery of symbols and metaphors. Since St. Teresa was an apophatic mystic, all of the words and imagery themselves will eventually have to be left behind any way in order to seek union with the God above all concepts.

If this book gives you some insight, great. But I recommend reading the original from St. Teresa. Although this author adds much helpful psychology (which is different in many ways than spirituality), too much is lost and sacrificed in the translation.

Book Description

A Night of Questions is a unique four-in-one Haggadah that includes outlines for customizing a Seder for the people present at the table. The four menus include a Seder for young children, a Seder for older children with adults, a Seder for groups of diverse backgrounds (including those who are not Jewish), and a Seder focusing on the role of women.

The Haggadah also features special color-coded graphic icons that highlight the different types of readings such as kavanot, which are introductions to the text that set the tone for the text, and readings for children. Readings and songs are drawn from a wide variety of sources, representing the diversity of the Jewish community and the world in which we live. Accompanying the text is compelling new artwork by Jeffrey Schrier, which itself serves as a commentary on the Haggadah liturgy.

5 out of 5 stars The only liberal Haggadah you will need.......2007-05-11

This year we had 25 to Sedar, so I ordered extra copies.
If you are looking for a liberal hagaddah, it has tremendous breadth and depth.

5 out of 5 stars Most User-Friendly Haggadah.......2007-03-26

I have somewhere between 20 and 30 different Haggadot. A Night of Questions is not only one of the richest and most thought-provoking in my collection... it is also the most user-friendly. It's the only one that has a table of contents that breaks down the Maggid section into its familiar parts (4 Children, Dayenu, etc.) The outlines of 4 different types of seders in the back of the book are very helpful. There's something here for every one. The commentaries address the hard questions that are likely to arise in the minds of those who are really thinking about what we are saying, such as: "Would it really have been 'enough for us' had we come out of Egypt and not been given the Torah and not come into the Land of Israel?" IMPORTANT NOTE: I see that Amazon is showing this as 4-6 weeks delivery. I know that they are available from the publisher and you'll have them in time for Passover. Check out www.jrf.org."

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing new Haggadah.......2007-03-25

This Haggadah has wonderful, contemporary discussions and presentations. The illustrations are beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars The Best to Date.......2003-03-03

I have conducted sedorim (seders) for over 30 years and have used five different haggadot. This is the BEST! It explains, offers excellent commentary, provides choices in the kind of seder one might have, as well as providing frameworks for designing your own. I have used it for 2 years now and get rave reviews from the people who attend my sedorim.

The cd of the music of Pesach which is available, is a favorite as we prepare our home for the holiday.

It sure beats "Manishewitz".

5 out of 5 stars This will get you out of a rut.......2003-02-13

Seders too often fall into a routine, with everyone slogging through the Hagaddah by rote. This is a lively, thought-provoking Hagaddah that will broaden and deepen your appreciation of Passover. It certainly has for my family.

Book Description

Gaius Petrius Ruso is a divorced and down-on his luck army doctor who has made the rash decision to seek his fortune in an inclement outpost of the Roman Empire, namely Britannia. His arrival in Deva (more commonly known as Chester, England) does little to improve his mood, and after a straight thirty six hour shift at the army hospital, he succumbs to a moment of weakness and rescues an injured slave girl, Tilla, from the hands of her abusive owner.

Now he has a new problem: a slave who won’t talk and can’t cook, and drags trouble in her wake. Before he knows it, Ruso is caught in the middle of an investigation into the deaths of prostitutes working out of the local bar. A few years earlier, after he rescued Emperor Trajan from an earthquake in Antioch, Ruso seemed headed for glory: now he’s living among heathens in a vermin-infested bachelor pad and must summon all his forensic knowledge to find a killer who may be after him next.

Who are the true barbarians, the conquered or the conquerors? It’s up to Ruso—certainly the most likeable sleuth to come out of the Roman Empire—to discover the truth. With a gift for comic timing and historic detail, Ruth Downie has conjured an ancient world as raucous and real as our own.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Medicus is great.......2007-09-19

Medicus is the first book by Ruth Downie, and she plans more to come. Her hero is a crusty Roman medical officer stationed with the XX Legio at Deva, modern Chester, England. Because they have no one else to take the bodies to (there were no police forces in ancient Rome, and anyway these murder victims were only slaves), people keep bring the bodies to the doctor. Though he's reluctant to get involved (he has more than enough troubles to worry about, from the pending foreclosure on the family farm to his difficult relationship with another Roman official), he's finally hooked on the question of the deaths. Murder and mayhem ensue, of course. I liked the fact that the protagonist wasn't an official "informer" or investigator. And also that he was living in the imperial backwater of Britain. His difficulties with the hospital administrator were amusing. Bureaucracy never changes!

4 out of 5 stars Doctor in the House.......2007-09-11

All in all it is a good read, one that I recommend.

Rather than embroidered with a vast sweep of historic greats, Downie's "Medicus" is woven with day-to day circumstances of the more common folk, a slant that gives the plot some fascinating twists readily recognizable to the average person as the sort of surprises, ambiguities and aggravations so much a part of their own lives. But there is mystery and intrigue for Gaius Petrius Ruso, a medical officer stationed with a Roman legion in ancient Britain. His already complicated life becomes even more so by Tilla, his would-be slave, who is not exactly in full appreciation of her dire circumstances. A well-constructed plot in and around the fort location of Deva keeps a steady pace. The novel's other characters provide a colorful supporting cast and stimulate marvelous images of human comedy and tragedy, especially when they center around Merula's, a site of local, um, entertainment. Personal details of the characters' day-to-day living experiences bring this above the typical sword and sandal genre and provoke some refreshing humor.

I did find the attribution of vernacular English to be a bit of a distraction, for example the soldiers referring to each other as "lads." However, this was not a serious enough flaw to detract on what was otherwise a fun book to savor.

3 out of 5 stars A Good debut.......2007-09-02

I have no doubt this author will improve with experience. Medicus is a little slow to start. I was about half through with little sleuthing on Ruso's part, more denial that he was investigating, although others seemed insistant he was. Nevertheless it was a nice read, and if this is a series she may continue with, this is a good introduction to the characters. It did however pick up in the second half and move along nicely. I wouldn't say she rivals Lindsey Davis, her characters and writing are her own, and she will, I think, carve her own niche.
I don't regret buying the book and look forward to her next, which I will definitely buy.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing first book.......2007-08-23

Good story, great characters, well researched, funny, overall an amazing first novel. I sure hope this is the first book in a long series.

Compares very favorably with Lindsey Davis, Steven Saylor, John Maddox Roberts (all writing about Roman times), Ellis Peters and Elizabeth Peters. Can't get much better than that!

3 out of 5 stars In between Davis and Saylor.......2007-07-19

With Medicus, Downie joins Lindsay Davis and Stephen Saylor as the preeminent authors of genre fiction set in ancient Rome. I already like her more than Davis, but she has to write a few more books before I can compare her to Saylor. On the positive side, the novel features a likable hero in Ruso, a doctor, and I like how the author sprinkles in detail about medicine and health care of the time. I also like how she bridges the gap between ancient Rome and the modern world: for example, Ruso's problems with women and bureaucracy are relatable despite the centuries. On the negative side, the central mystery progressed too slowly and the identity of the villain is too predictable. I am also tired of reading about Roman characters who fall in love with their slaves. It's so trite. Furthermore, I don't feel that the author explains their romance. Why does he fall in love with her? Because she's pretty? That's lust, not love.

Medicus is a good debut novel. If Downie can evolve as a writer like Saylor did, she will become required reading.

The Lamb's Supper: The Mass as Heaven on Earth reawakens a surprising ancient view of the Eucharist, as the harbinger of the supernatural drama described by the New Testament book of Revelation. Catholic theologian Scott Hahn thinks that many worshippers receive the sacrament of communion without ever considering its links to the end of the world, the Apocalypse, and the Second Coming. Hahn wants to change our minds; he wants us to know that "The Mass--and I mean every single Mass--is heaven on earth." Literally. So, Hahn declares, "Now heaven has been unveiled for us with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ ... Jesus Christ Himself says to you: 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with Me' (Rv. 3:20)." Hahn's enthusiasm, as evident even from these short quotes, is considerable--and infectious. Furthermore, he delivers his arguments with great levity (demonstrated in chapter titles such as "Oath Meal"), which makes The Lamb's Supper quite a tasty read. --Michael Joseph Gross

5 out of 5 stars wonderous new insights!.......2007-10-11

I am a cradle Catholic who has just finished 7 years of Bible study. This brought me many new insights of the Mass I have attended faithfully for my entire life. I only wish I had been taught these things years ago. It is a small book, but a treasure trove of beautiful realities of the Mass. I think it is a must for every Catholic!

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all catholics and those seeking truth.......2007-09-15

This is the most influential book I have ever read in my life, period. It will completely change the way you approach Mass and your day to day life.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the Mass and Revelation.......2007-08-23

We've tought a few classes using this as a textbook and it's great. We've even had non-Catholics appreciate the connections made in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-07-09

Until I read this book as a Protestant exploring the Catholic faith, I had no idea what all is happening in the Mass. This book opened a whole new world to me.

5 out of 5 stars An Oasis of Truth.......2007-06-27

This book by Scott Hahn reveals the hidden mysteries of the Mass. It has greatly helped me find refreshment in this topsy-turvy world. A virtual oasis in the midst of the modern desert. Now I appreciate the Mass, finding deeper meaning in the actions, symbols, garments and liturgy that one encounters in the Mass. It is so biblical and truly reveals God's love for mankind. A great treasure to own. Truly, heaven has come to earth.

Book Description

Percy Jackson's seventh-grade year has been surprisingly quiet. Not a single monster has set foot on his New York prep-school campus. But when an innocent game of dodgeball among Percy and his classmates turns into a death match against an ugly gang of cannibal giants, things get . . . well, ugly. And the unexpected arrival of Percy's friend Annabeth brings more bad news: the magical borders that protect Camp Half-Blood have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and unless a cure is found, the only safe haven for demigods will be destroyed. In this fresh, funny, and hugely anticipated follow up to The Lightning Thief, Percy and his friends must journey into the Sea of Monsters to save their beloved camp. But first, Percy will discover a stunning new secret about his family -- one that makes him question whether being claimed as Poseidon's son is an honor or simply a cruel joke.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful contemporary mythology story :-).......2007-10-19

I am reading the series to my seventh grade students. They are fascinated by the story and the wonderful inclusion of the Greek gods and goddesses and other minor mythological characters. Truly a great way to start the class with my students. (Personally, I enjoyed reading the book at home, too, and I am considerably older than my seventh graders!)

5 out of 5 stars The Sea of Monsters.......2007-10-10

This book is a winner. My nine year old daughter loved this whole series and wouldn't leave me alone until I got her the 2nd (and ultimately the 3rd) book. She loved the hidden twists and turns to the story. She thought the book was quite exciting. She reads one to two 100+ books a week and this is her Favorite series, by far, of all the books she has read. She likes the mix of ancient mythology and action.

4 out of 5 stars THE SEA OF MONSTERS.......2007-10-06

The Sea of Monster's was a thrilling book that is appropriate for young adults and adults. It was action packed and clever.:)Anyone who is interested in greek mythology would thoroughly enjoy this book. I'm looking forward to reading the 3rd book, and have already ordered it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wow. . .what an ending!.......2007-09-28

This is a fabulous sequel to Riordan's first book. It is full of action, adventure, and it sparks some curiosity about future events. . . not to mention the ending will wow you!

4 out of 5 stars Percy's Odyssey is another fantastic trip into modern Greek myth.......2007-09-13

In the second book of the modern Greek-mythological Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, Percy discovers that Camp Half-Blood is in danger as their borders are weakening. Even worse, his cross-dressing satyr best friend Grover is in danger of getting married. Percy, his friend and daughter of Athena, go on a quest to save Grover and retrieve the Golden Fleece, doing a great impression of Odysseus along the way. While the book isn't as imaginative and strong as the first in the series, it continues Riordan's witty prose and clever updating of Greek mythology and Greek hero quests (I just go geek for that stuff). Percy's issues with his absent father are compounded with the discovery and shame of his half-brother. Percy's father-issues reflect a very grown up issue: that of feeling abandoned by our God. At heart, this intelligent series isn't just about the greater and universal truths of Greek mythology and the problems of identity and growing up, but about family and the bonds of blood, even the most dysfunctional family in history: that of the ancient Greek divinity. Book Description

This book unravels mysteries, corrects misunderstandings, and offers thoughtful, straightforward responses to common objections about the Catholic faith.

Bestselling author Scott Hahn, a convert to Catholicism, has experienced the doubts that so often drive discussions about God and the Church. In the years before his conversion, he was first a nonbeliever and then an anti-Catholic clergyman.

In REASONS TO BELIEVE, he explains the "how and why" of the Catholic faith—drawing from Scripture, his own struggles and those of other converts, as well as from everyday life and even natural science. Hahn shows that reason and revelation, nature and the supernatural, are not opposed to one another; rather they offer complementary evidence that God exists. But He doesn't merely exist. He is someone, and He has a personality, a personal style, that is discernible and knowable. Hahn leads readers to see that God created the universe with a purpose and a form—a form that can be found in the Book of Genesis and that is there when we view the natural world through a microscope, through a telescope, or through our contact lenses.

At the heart of the book is Hahn's examination of the ten "keys to the kingdom"—the characteristics of the Church clearly evident in the Scriptures. As the story of creation discloses, the world is a house that has a Father, a palace where the king is really present. God created the cosmos to be a kingdom, and that kingdom is the universal Church, fully revealed by Jesus Christ.

It's a very good book for enriching your faith, and for sharing with your family.

5 out of 5 stars This book will stimulate deep thinking.......2007-10-02

There are other good reviews here that do an excellent job of summarizing the content and organization of this well-written book. "Reasons to Believe" was not exactly what I was expecting, but was both informative and satisfying. Hahn is a theologian, not a lay apologist, and in this book he writes for the reader interested in the theology of this topic. "Reasons to Believe" is informative and satisfying, because it goes into the underlying theology of apologetics, and that is essential to the serious student. Because I earned minors in both theology and philosophy in college, I was able to digest this material quickly. However, for the person with no formal theological background, the book might feel like a little bit of a stretch at first. Having said that, Dr. Hahn is an outstanding writer. He is always clear, logical and understandable. Stay with the book and you will learn quite a bit. However, you probably won't fly through this book. It is worthwhile to take in a little bit each time, and give it some thought before going on. This book can get you to think on a very deep level. It's one I will probably re-read several times over the next few years.

5 out of 5 stars Reasons to Believe.......2007-09-11

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in apologetics. Scott Hahn has a way with words that makes the concepts of Augustine and Aquinas very readable.

I would recommend this text for teaching adults and high school students.

Best book I have read on the subject.

Frank G.

4 out of 5 stars One part OK, one part fascinating, one part valuable.......2007-09-02

This book is really three things in one. The first part of the book is a straightforward defense of the faith, where Mr. Hahn briefly answers many of the common misconceptions about Catholicism with rational argument, and then through Biblical analysis. This segment seems to be written mainly for Protestant inquirers and Catholics who want to be better equipped to defend the faith. While very well written, there are many other sources of apologetics that treat these subjects in far more detail (Hahn mentions a number of them himself).

The second part of the book is a high level interpretation of the Catholic Church considering the Bible - Old Testament and New - as an epic story about a kingdom. Hahn starts with the first words of Genesis and wraps up 40 or 50 pages later in Revelation. His view casts the Catholic Church in a new light, and a fuller one than I had ever imagined. Hahn, a Biblical scholar, is able to connect the dots between the ancient meaning of the Biblical texts and what we experience today of Christianity and the Church. In presenting his case, Hahn does much more than defend the faith - he puts the Bible in a clear perspective, transforming it from a collection of seemingly unconnected parts into a unified whole. This has value for readers of every stripe.

The third part of the book is an extremely lengthy list of recommended reading. Actually it is more than a list. Hahn takes the trouble to explain what the books are about and why they are important, and there are enough of them to last a lifetime. I'd say the list alone is worth the price of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Good start to apologetics.......2007-08-26

Good summary, for laymen (and women!). Good jumping off point for undestanding how to defend the true faith.

5 out of 5 stars Hello Percy!.......2007-10-15

This book was FANTASTIC! As a huge Harry Potter fan, I have been searching for a new series and this one has certainly taken Harry's place. The weaving of Greek mythology through out the story was engrossing and you come to love Percy, Grover and Annabeth just as much as Ron, Hermonie and Harry...at least I have. These books are totally different than the Harry Potter books, but Riordan has created the same type of "magical" story telling that Rowling fans love. I have read all the books now and I anxiously await book 4!

5 out of 5 stars READ THIS!!!!.......2007-10-10

This book was the most terrifying and joyable book. I highly recommend reading this book and making sure that you read the rest of the series. I liked this book because of the surprizing acts of the heroic trio.
Percy Jackson, Grover, and Annabelle.

This is my son's review and he read this book when he was in the fourth grade and enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars The Lightning Thief.......2007-10-09

Isaiah Adams The Lightning Thief By: Rick Riordan I would like to start off by saying, this book was one of the most exiting books I think that I have ever read. It always kept me on my toes. It is from the genre mythology. I would say that this book gets a five star rating. This was a very action packed book that always left you wanting more. It is all about a boy named Percy who finds out in a very dramatic way that he is a half-blood, and gets sent out on a quest to retrieve what was stolen from Zeus the god of the sky: the lightning bolt. A half-blood is someone who is half mortal and half immortal. They have to be shielded from the regular world because their scent attracts monsters. When going on the quest Percy takes this girl who he met at Camp Half-Blood named Annabeth, and he takes his friend Grover who is half donkey and half male. I can really relate to the way Percy feels a lot of the time. Like when he gets angry, he feels like doing every first thing that pops into his head. When he is sad he cannot always say exactly why. The author really uses Percy's emotions to draw you into the unique story-line and make you feel as if you were the one who had to do the quest. The writer, Rick Riordan, writes in a way that is funny yet deep and meaningful at the same time. He can make his images seem real to the reader through his imaginative descriptions and at times he had me laughing out loud. This book reminds me of another book called the series of unfortunate events. That does not mean that this book is very depressing, but Percy has to do a lot of things that are against his will and has to face things that are very difficult for him to deal with all by himself. In all I would recommend reading this book. It will take you on an exploration of drama, emotion, and comedy. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Gods in the Modern World.......2007-10-08

Although I might disagree that the USA is the centre of Western Culture, this is a fun read. Percy Jackson is just such an interesting character. When we meet him first he's in his Sixth school in as many years and this school is a school for troubled kids. Strange things keep happening around him, he's got ADHD and Dyslexia and his stepfather hates him

When he realises that he's the son of a Greek God and that because of this he's the subject of interest from monsters from myth and legend. He gets a chance to go to Camp Half-Blood, where Mr D (or Dionysus) supervises the half-gods. However someone has stolen Zeus' Thunderbolt and Percy is the primary suspect. Will he survive to find the real thief or will the Gods kill him.

2 out of 5 stars Meh.......2007-09-27

This book is a little elementary. Also, it seems like a lot of concepts were taken from Harry Potter. I think there is even a blatent reference to the Potter novels in the book. I like the concept and the use of Ancient Greek themes, but I think the market of people who can enjoy this book is rather small: 8-12 year olds with a comprehension of Ancient Greece.
