5 out of 5 stars Living the oridinary extraordinarily: Reminiscences of a Catholic convert........2005-11-06

The Long Loneliness by Dorothy Day has long been held to be an important social document as well as a meaningful written Catholic memoir, because it delves deeply into the intimate conversion experience whereby there is a moving epiphany that changes that person so completely and totally. And The Long Loneliness illustrates that point quite clearly. Even before the Catholic Worker was ever founded by Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin, their approach to religious activism was almost on par with other lay Catholic social orgaizations, mirroring the motto of Catholic Action, founded in 1868, the best, whose battle cry is: Prayer. Action. Sacrifice. However, what makes this memoir so appealing is that it is outlined in a belief framework of pragmatic thought and a consistent work ethic, like Opus Dei. Dorothy Day, in the recounting of her conversion and the afteraffects of it, is not given to flights of supernatural fancy or prone to self-created mystical experiences or visions, which, when people do have them, are psychosomatic or psychotic, at best.

There are various reasons why people enter the Catholic Church, and for Day, she wanted her daughter-Tamar-to not flounder in a life of sexual radicalism and voracious wantonness, both of which wounded her quite grievously before she had her conversion experience. Before she became Catholic, Dorothy Day was a doer rather than a sayer; she put action behind her words, and she found comfort in the Gospel: feeding the hungry and clothing the poor. The latter was the very impetus for why The Catholic Worker was established, to make it real, living and vibrant for others. What is recounted in the Long Loneliness is not any caliber of theological scholarship or penetrating analysis of the Gospel. Rather, besides being lived, Catholicism in conjunction with pacificism, economics, helping the downtrodden and the labor movement is thoroughly explored. And yet, simplicity, simplicity, simplicity is exemplified throughout. Through her collected writings, especially her memoir, Dorothy Day illuminated that in accepting the Catholic ideal, everyone must carry their cross if they want the world to be even a slightly better place and that the Catholic faith is not one to take lightly.

5 out of 5 stars Enriching Exploration of the Discovery of Faith.......2005-06-07

"The Long Loneliness," is one of the most enriching testimonies of an individual's search and discovery of faith that I have ever read, although I found the first 60 pages a bit slow (about her background and coming of age). I am very happy I persevered, because it only got better and more inspirational, as she began to perceive glimpses of God and tried to learn how best to follow Him.

Dorothy Day was a journalist who lived in the early 1900s and died in 1980. She was raised an agnostic. Her family did not practice a religion. Early in her life she attended churches with neighbors, and loved the feeling of communal worship, but felt discouraged by so many people who attended church only on Sunday and thought that was the end of their religious obligation to others.

An early memory that had a great impact on her was an earthquake during her childhood, in which the families who retained their houses opened their homes to those who had lost theirs, and the community banded together to help each other in brotherly love. She lived her life searching for this sense of community. During her college years she began an activist involved in political causes such as women's voting rights, and labor rights for women and children, and had sympathies with communist organizations, that, from her perspective, seemed to assist the needs of the poor more than any Christian church.

This is a conversion story, much similar to Thomas Merton's "Seven Story Mountain," but which inspired me much more than his good work. She felt an incredible need to worship God, so much that she believes that human beings have a deep psychological need to worship and when their devotion is misplaced on humans rather than the divine, it is a recipe for disaster. The First World War and the Great Depression was the background for her conversion. She worked as a nurse during the War and began attending church with a colleague, but latter returned to writing in an environment where there was less church, but she continued to pray.

She had a common law marriage with a man, whom she loved dearly, but when she became pregnant, she decided that she must have the child baptized so that her daughter would not experience the lack of spiritual support that caused her so much confusion and soul searching. She felt such great love durign her preganancy, that she believed she required a supernatural channel to channel the love. She had hoped to enter a church with her partner as a marriage before God, but he was adamantly opposed to religion and perceived it as a form of imperialism. She left him with her daughter, in order to follow a life that she believed would be pleasing to God. It was not an easy situation for her, as she had hoped for a traditional life, and being a single mother is never and easy vocation in any time period. The anguish she described when she reached the conclusion of what she must do was only a page but it moved me to tears. The situation that the decision evoked was not easy, but reaching the decision for her seemed to be a simple matter, because of her great faith. She wrote about it as occasionally God offers s the same proposition to us that he gave Abraham; to sacrifice something we love in pursuit of Him, whom we should love above all created things. She worte too, that staying with him felt natural, but that she was aspiring for a supernatural life, which requires different considerations when making decisions. I would like to hope that I would have the same faith and courage in a similar situation, but I don't know.

The time period following her separation was difficult for her, and she experienced loneliness, as she searched to discover what would be her niche in the world, according to God's plan. She believed that the antidote for loneliness is involvement in community life. She started the "Catholic Worker" with Peter Maurin (who she felt was sent to her by God as a response to her prayers for guidance in her vocational quest), a paper which reported about the injustices confronted by the poor and that presented articles of helpful advice for struggling families. The paper is still in existence.

She also started a hospitality house that offered food and shelter to those who need it, and a space where people can find a voice. Eventually a chain of such houses grew and now are operating not only across the US, but across the world. Some became retreat centers. Day's life is a perfect testimony of an individual discovering God's love and learning to return the love with faith, not only through worship to God, but also through offering love and help to others.

This is a great book for people seeking to understand what is faith and how does it move people, and a great book for people dealing with difficult situations in their lives when they are seeking to find what it is that they are meant to do with their lives. I recommend her story to every one.

3 out of 5 stars The Long Loneliness.......2004-10-23

This book is Dorothy Day's own autobiography. I know she was a remarkable woman. Everything that I have seen and heard about her has been outstanding. I was excited when I found this book.
However, I felt disappointed by this book. It was rather boring and dry. Dorothy must have been very humble, because she writes about herself in a mundane fashion. It sounds like this is the diary account of her life. I guess she must not have realized how heroic she really was. She also experienced significant pain and isolation in her life, hence the title.

      5 out of 5 stars A Classic Conversion Story.......2003-11-02

Catholic faith fascinates people. How did her spiritual life develop, and how did it influence the remainder of her life? Many wonderful authors, including but not limited to people such as William Miller, Robert Coles, and most recently Paul Elie, have written extensively about Dorothy Day and help us understand this amazing and complex woman, but nothing is more rewarding than reading the writings of Day herself.

THE LONG LONELINESS is a classic spiritual tome and is often referred to as Day's spiritual autobiography. In many ways it is similar to Thomas Merton's SEVEN STOREY MOUNTAIN, and it is easily a close second in popularity with many Catholics. Though Day's writing style is much drier than Merton's writing and her story is not quite as spellbinding as the artist and aspiring writer turned monk, the reader can sense God working powerfully in Day's life. If the book were published today, it would probably be categorized as a memoir, rather than an autobiography since day does not as much tell her story as reflect on how God called her to a life of faith.

The book is a "must read" for anyone who loves and admires Dorothy Day. It is also a book that will interest people interested in religious social activism. Yet the book may speak most powerfully to those who are on a spiritual quest themselves, either knowingly or unknowingly.

1 out of 5 stars she should've stuck to being a social activist.......2002-08-17

I was required to read this book for school this summer and it was by far the worst book I have read in my life. Its only a 280 page book, but her style of writing makes it seem as if it was about a thousand. She fills the book with useless information (i.e. she writes an in depth account of a cover of a book her brother brought home one day and then wonders what it was about. That was completely pointless and failed to advance the plot at all.) Instead of sticking to the core story, which might have been interesting she rambles off about random occurences constantly.

5 out of 5 stars Review of, "As A Woman Thinketh".......2007-03-21

This is a small, but powerful, little book. Take the contents to heart.
For a woman, there is more appeal in choosing the "female version" of
this booklet. It is inspirational in nature, and the truth of it's subject
is what inspires, and makes it powerful. The fact that the phrasing of
the statements therein, are in an "old-fashioned" style of speech does
not detract from it's valuable message.

      2 out of 5 stars shallow.......2006-11-10

This book has alot of "feel good" inserted in it.
I was disappointed in it. I bought it to give to my daughters and daughter-in-law, but changed my mind when I read it.
It strayed from the Biblical view.

4 out of 5 stars Food for thought.......2001-06-03

The original of this piece "As A Man Thinketh" is a profound piece, but distinctly marred from a female point of view by the inextricably male casting of the reader. This book is a much easier to take read for me and I think for most women (though it would be as irritating for most men as the original was for most women). It is somewhat more subtly marred by the occassional misuse of a gender term - I.e. "womanly" does not substitute straight for "manly" in most usage without making the resultant sentence rather odd.

Other than this quibble, it is an excellent book and one I would recommend to anyone as nourishing food to feed your mental life.

5 out of 5 stars Portable Pearls of Wisdom.......2000-06-13

This book goes with me nearly everywhere. I'd read it several years ago and it was helpful in getting me to get outside myself, and change my attitude a bit (oh, what a helpless victim of circumstance and other people's actions I'd been!)

Later, I ordered up several copies to hand out. When I was an executive, other women would sometimes come to me with complaints about who did this to them, and why they were helpless to change. Everything I suggested had a 'Yeah, but... ' attached to it. Before I hit my mid-40's, I was caught in the drama, feeling responsible and depressed by their circumstnaces.

Then I started handing out copies of the book. I'm sure many thought I was nuts, but a couple have actually gotten the message.

I'm not a tough-minded broad, but a bleeding heart liberal who finally realized you can help a fellow working-woman to grow not by solving her problems, but by supporting her as she learns she can do it herself.

The language in the book (really a booklet) is based on "As A Man Thinketh", but altered just slightly for women. It is invigorating to realize that what is true for the gander is true for the goose.

Don't be put off by the style - "Woman is buffetted by circumstances so long as she believes herself to be the creature of outside conditions, but when she realizes that she is a creative power, and that she may command the hidden soil and sees of her being out of which circumstances grow, she then becomes the rightful master of herself."

Oh yes! So, here's the message - what you think and do greatly affects what happens to you. You aren't the victim you think you are, so move on!

"As A Man Thinketh" and "As I Think" are also available.

5 out of 5 stars I recommend this book to every person out there........1999-08-19

This book has added a lot of richness and inspiration to my relationship with God. It is true that if one thinks negatively all the time nothing good will come out of his/her but if one thinks positively everything he/she does will yeild good results: this book makes it perferct and simple to grasp the concept. I will recommend "As a man thinketh" to everyone who is willing to improve upon their thinking process. I also believe that we are what we think. You will not regret spending money on it. I bought one for my husband and I keep mine in my purse for easy access and reference. God bless you.

5 out of 5 stars This book helps me get through each day more easily........1998-07-02

I love this book. It is written by one of the greatest men of the Twentieth Century, and one of its most beloved. The thing that is so pleasing about this book is that one can read each day as it comes along, and still read this like a great novel that really happens. it is as relevant today, actually more so, as it was in 1962. This has to be one of the most underappreciated books of the last half-century. I will admit, I am a Catholic, but Pope John meant for this book to read and profited from by all Christians-remember, he kept repeating, "Ut unum sint"-"That they may be one", as he neared his passing. this book may be the true key to Christian reunification. So whether you are Catholic, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Methodist or Baptist, it would do you good to pick up this great tome. It will amke life easier...if you really listen.

An excellent story about Christian Ministry through the efforts of the Catholic Worker Movement and its founders, Peter Maurin and Dorothy Day. Day writes a clear and moving description of the heartache and blessings that are so much a part of ministry to the lost and forsaken. Moving accounts of the call to the social justice for the poor and marginalized in America. Her inspirational journey calls others to join the Catholic Worker Movement to provide for the masses that suffer daily.
The Long Loneliness also by Day is a must read as a companion to Loaves and Fishes

In Loaves and Fishes Dorothy Day tells the story of the Catholic Worker movement. It is a story of faith in action; the working out of the Word of God in day to day living.

The adventure that began one day in the early 1930's led to the establishment of a radical newspaper (for clarification of thought), houses of hospitality (to give the rich an opportunity to serve the poor), and communitarian farms (to confront issues of unemployment, delinquency, rootlessness, and hunger).

I was struck by the matter of fact way in which Day describes the lifestyle that flowed through all of this; "We were to reach the people by practicing the works of mercy, which meant feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the prisoner, sheltering the harborless, and so on. We were to do this by being poor ourselves, giving everything we had; then others would give, too". She goes on to write, "'A spectacle to the world, to angels and to men...the off-scouring of all,' St. Paul said, and that is what we became. The trouble was, we could not know when to stop...we soon began to have a community, and it was pretty much a community of the poor".

It becomes clear that Dorothy Day and those with whom she worked saw none of this as extraordinary. Rather, it was a natural consequence of following Jesus. This is something that we who are comfortable in the church today need to meditate on.

Towards the end of the book Day expresses regret that not more was accomplished. But then she adds, "The consolation is this - and this is our faith too: By our suffering and our failures, by our acceptance of the Cross, by our struggle to grow in faith, hope, and charity, we unleash forces that help to overcome the evil in the world".

5 out of 5 stars "All we give is given to us to give".......2004-01-16

So says Dorothy Day in "Loaves and Fishes" (p. 177), and it is both the heart of the book's message and the central theme of her adult life. Thank goodness Orbis has reprinted this classic personal history of the Catholic Worker movement and the colorful saints in its ranks. In the book, Dorothy tells how her depression-era meeting with Peter Maurin birthed first a newspaper, then a hospitality house, then a national movement. In addition, Dorothy tries to explain the underlying theological and spiritual principles of the Catholic Workers: the resistance to power structures that cynically refuse to care for society's most vulnerable; the Christ-inspired conviction that voluntary poverty (or what Dorothy called "precarity") is a mechanism for social reform as well as a transformative sharing in redemptive suffering; that the duty of Christians is to collaborate with God in the creation of God's Kingdom; and that in society as it's currently structured, one is either on the side of the poor or one is an exploiter--there's no fence-sitting. As Peter Maurin says (quoted by Dorothy, p. 86): "We cannot see our brother [or sister] in need without stripping ourselves. It is the only [genuine] way we have of showing our love."

Reading Dorothy Day, as I try to do every year, is a reminder both of how far from the Gospel message most of us who call ourselves Christians live, and how wonderfully easy, joyful, and liberating living that message would actually be. By both her example and writings, Dorothy invites us to ask ourselves why we hold back from doing what we know is right, and inspires us to roll up our sleeves and accept the Gospel challenge. Let her have the final word here (p. 176):

"One of the greatest evils of the day...is [a] sense of futility. People say, What good can one person do? What is the sense of our small effort? They cannot see that we must lay one brick at a time, take one step at a time; we can be responsible only for the one action of the present moment. But we can beg for an increase of love in our hearts that will vitalize and transorm all our individual actions, and know that God will take them and multiply them, as Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes."

This book contains the highlights and experiences of Dorothy Day, the founder of the Catholic Worker Movement. It is a very enjoyable book. The philosophy and beliefs are brought out in a series of experiences, many of them humorous, about the unique characters, role models and lessons learned in trying to adopt an early Christian communal attitude to charity and bring it to the streets of New York City. Dorothy Day lived her beliefs intently. Over the decades it resulted in running many urban soup kitchens, Hospitality houses, a farm or two, along with publishing the Catholic Worker Newspaper and authoring this very inspiring book.. This book will make you think,

5 out of 5 stars A deeply moving book, from a sorely needed voice.......1998-07-08

At a time when the "mainstream" media insists on appointing the Christian Coalition and other groups of their ilk as voices of the Gospel in todays world, we are reminded of how much the life, words, and witness of Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker are needed. Back in print in the handsome edition, "Loaves and Fishes" tells the history of the movement founded by Day and Peter Maurin. In an era when far too many associate Christianity with indifference to Christ's poor, and the embracement of intolerant and spiteful political agendas, the voice of prophets like Day are sorely needed.

      Book Description

Robert Coles first met Dorothy Day over thirty-five years ago when, as a medical student, he worked in one of her Catholic Worker soup kitchens. He remained close to this inspiring and controversial woman until her death in 1980. His book, an intellectual and psychological portrait, confronts candidly the central puzzles of her life: the sophisticated Greenwich Village novelist and reporter who converted to Catholicism; the single mother who raised her child in a most unorthodox "family"; her struggles with sexuality, loneliness, and pride; her devout religious conservatism coupled with radical politics. This intense portrait is based on many years of conversation and correspondence, as well as tape-recorded interviews.

      2 out of 5 stars Dorothy day.......2001-05-18

"Dorothy Day: A Radical Devotion" was a good book because it showed Dorothy's imperfections and her good points. Some authors only tell about the good points of people's lives, but this book shows that Dorothy Day wasn't perfect. She made mistakes in her life. I learned a lot of interesting facts that I never knew about Dorothy Day. This book shows how Dorothy was devoted to helping the homeless. She established thirty three homeless houses across the whole country. She was brave when she left her husband to convert to Catholicism. Her husband didn't approve of God. Her daughter was baptized. My favorite part of the whole book is when the homeless man comes into the hospitality house and he has a gun with him. He threatens to shoot the gun. Instead of calling the cops, Dorothy goes over to the man and introduces herself. This shows how brave and courageous Dorothy is. The man then talks to her. All he wanted was for someone to appreciate him and someone to talk to him. He visited her often. Dorothy was there for him. This book gave me hope because it shows that an immoral person such as Dorothy Day turned into a woman who had great morals. She went from having an abortion to establishing hospitality houses. If a person knows someone who has no morals, they shouldn't give up on them because if they have enough faith in God, they can turn themselves around like Dorothy Day turned herself around. Having faith in God can help a person through anything. We all make mistakes in our lives and do things we shouldn't but we have to learn by these mistakes and try to better ourselves. Also, like Dorothy we have to do what makes us happy and not listen to other people. She lost her husband and gave up a lot of material things, but this is what made her happy and she helped a lot of people.

      5 out of 5 stars A concise treatment of a complex life.......2000-08-08

Biographers frequently become lost in minutiae.

Dorothy Day poses a particular challenge to the discriminating writer, because of the sheer volume of material about her life, including an autobiography, an autobiographical novel, a huge mass of journalism, biographies, and the writings of a number of her contemporaries. Given such a prolific writer, the reader might expect with dread to encounter 900 pages of occupations of great-grandparents, musings in correspondence, and constant press quotes--the fodder of the "I've got a book deal and I'm gonna put out a tome" kind of bio writing that we see all too often.

Coles' book is a breath of fresh air. In a hundred and a half pages he gives us an overview of her life and ideas, framed by excerpts from his own interviews with Ms. Day in her later years. Coles' editorial voice is always present, but generally open-minded. This is not a literary biography, evaluating the merit of Ms. Day's writings, nor a social biography, intending to give us all the inner workings of the Catholic worker movement. Instead, this is a meditation on the inspirations and contradictions inherent in this very rich life, told as often as possible from Mr. Coles' impression of Ms. Day's own take on her life-as-lived.

I read this in an evening and a day, and found it inspiring, satisfying, and altogether well written. Sometimes I wished Mr. Coles had put a little less of his first person impressions into his reportage of interviews with Ms. Day,but other times I wanted more of Mr. Coles' touchstone analysis of what Ms. Day was saying.

A reasonable critique of this book is that one could read it and still fall well short of understanding Ms. Day's thoughts or the details of her life. The somewhat sunny tone may be perceived as uncritical. For me, though, this was a great bio--get in, get the job done, get out, leave an image as clear as a descriptive poem. This is a good read--I highly recommend.

      5 out of 5 stars A life of integrity.......2000-07-09

Robert Coles' friendship with Dorothy Day began in 1952 and continued through almost three decades until her death in 1980. Coles kept notes on his many converstations with Day, and in this book shares with his readers his intimate knowledge of this extraordinary woman. He quotes extensively from these converstations in which Day spoke simply and openly about all sorts of issues, and Coles says that he writes "in the hope of giving readers the benefit of her distinct, compelling point of view." In keeping with this, the organization of his book is topical rather than chronological, although the first chapter does provide a brief overview of the events of Dorothy Day's life.

The remaining chapters center about the issues that were important to Dorothy Day: her conversion to Catholicism, her relationship to the Church, politics, her daily life in Catholic Worker houses, and more.

What is special about Coles' work is that the reader comes to experience Day, as she revealed herself to her friend. We encounter her in all her complexity and even contradictions, and above all, in her stunning fidelity to her ideals and beliefs.

      4 out of 5 stars Interesting biography.......1998-10-05

Coles bases his biography on a series of interviews with Day, cofounder of the Catholic Worker. He explores her youth which she didn't look back fondly upon and her devotion to major social causes that her conservative fans don't want to focus on. Ms. Day truly strikes you as a dedicated, sincere, intelligent and good person. While she may not have wanted to be a saint, she often comes through as possessing the modesty, self-criticism, concern for others and devotion to the Lord that one should expect in a saint. Coles' writing isn't great but is at least average for a biography, and given the subject, this was a book well worth reading.

This book is unusually good. I borrowed a copy from the libary after reading thse reviews, and now I'm back buying a copy to re-read and cherish.

I'd thought it would be simply a gorgeous picture book, but it's the prose and anecdotes; they bring the people of the day to life. You will get to know these people very well.

Magnificent book by the same family: "Lincoln: An Illustrated Biography".

5 out of 5 stars Great for Lincoln and Civil War buffs.......2007-07-27

I originally received this book in 1968 from my parents. I wanted a new copy for my coffee table. This is so full of facts and fascinating photos any one who is a Lincoln or Civil War buff will treasure it. A must have.

      5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Tribute.......2007-03-18

I purchased my copy of Twenty Days on September 11, 1968 for $11.95 (new). I know that because I wrote it on the inside of the dust jacket before encasing it in a book cover. I was a junior in college at the time. And over the last thirty-nine years I have re-read it, flipped through it's pages and relived again and again the chrinicle of one of the ninteenth century's greatest tragedies. I must have witnessed it in a former life. All that's missing are the acrid smells of kerosene lamps in stuffy rooms, horse manure in the muddy streets, stagnant water in the old canal and the swamps around the White House. And how it felt to wear a black suit, starched collar and high boots in unbearable heat and humidity.

The amazing attention to detail not only feeds one's unexpressible curiosity, the book is the bible for collectors of Lincolnalia. Who got his boots, stole his cane, the bloody bed cover that disappeared while on tour? And a plethora of other remnants of those twenty days.

Through this book, Mr. Lincoln's memory will remain very much alive to all those lucky enough to read it.

      5 out of 5 stars 20 Days.......2006-12-26

I first read this book when it came out back in the 1960's
It hooked me forever on the Lincoln Assassination
And it's still the best photo book on this tragic event!

4 out of 5 stars The murder of Lincoln and twelve funerals........2006-10-31

This is a nice picture book of the last days of Abe Lincoln. It starts with his visiting the captured Confederate capital of Richmond, and then his murder in Ford's Theater. This book covers the snaring of the conspirators along with their military trial. Then it takes a look at the twelve cities where there were funerals in. Few people realize Lincoln's funeral was the precursor to Memorial Day. Unlike other picture books, this has a lot of information in it. This is a lengthy read at 300 + pages.

The authors spent a lot of time securing the rights to the many pictures that accompany this book. This is a very informative read. It also depicts the emotion of the time when Lincoln was murdered. Abe may not have been liked when he was alive, but he became a saint when he was dead.
      A very informative pictorial read.
