4 out of 5 stars Book #2 (4 1/2 stars).......2007-08-14

This is Dr. Shea and Jacques story.

Jacques had barely kept control of his mind after being buried alive for 7 years. He was able to telepathically communicate with Shea (and there's a reason for it), but she was unsure about her mental state herself and questioned what she was hearing.

It took her SEVIN years to finally follow her mind and that was practically forced upon her.

I liked this story. It starts right off and moves along. Nicely written and edited.

Another enjoyable read from Christine Feehan. I have enjoyed the entire series and await more to come.

5 out of 5 stars - - -If this was My Thing!!!.......2007-06-13

If the whole vampire thing was my cup of tea, this series would definitely have me hooked. The fact that I've read "Dark Prince" and "Dark Desire" comes as a complete surprise to those who know me; so much so that four people started reading this series and are enjoying it.

"Dark Desire" takes off where "Dark Prince" ends. Though "Dark Desire" can stand alone, reading enjoyment is enhanced by having read background information in "Dark Prince."

Jacques Dubrinsky, younger brother to Mikhail Dubrinsky Prince of the Carpathians (Dark Prince) has been captured, tortured, and left for dead. Shea O'Halloran is more than his rescuer and lifemate. She fills in a few misplaced and/or missing puzzle pieces from "Dark Prince"; pieces readers may not have realized existed. Their story is intense, emotional, and builds further on the Carpathian species and existence while setting the stage for future stories. The whole: Carpathians as a different "species" - not human; alpha, primal, shape-shifter that can run as/with wild animals (including wolves and owls); with principal objective & actions center on the need to protect their lifemates and children on a primal or animalistic level. Again, their "alpha" mentality and behavior, may be off-putting to some, bit adds to their wild-animalistic, whole-other-species nature. Failure to view Carpathians as another species and humanize them instead detracts from the uniqueness and creativity involved in creating this whole other species, culture, and way of existence.

This is a wonderful paranormal with drama, feeling, action, explanations, and more questions sure to continue to draw readers further in the Carpathian world.

5 out of 5 stars Very good ... in a disturbing kind of way.......2007-04-28

I thought that it was a very good read. I liked the fact that it was very dark and disturbing, as one would expect from a vampire theme. Readers should be prepared for the amount of blood in this book. Rivers of it, literally. Every single character involved in this book were either drinking blood, feeding others with their blood or simply bleeding from their always near fatal wounds. Come to think of it, on every page from beginning until the very end someone was always feeding or bleeding. Perhaps this book is not for everyone, but I thought that is was very different from the other books in the same category, and so I liked it a lot.

3 out of 5 stars Beware of overbearing males..........2007-04-05

It is a good book. It follows the series well, the plot stays with the ones that come before it.
The sex scenes are too drawn out, the story line is good though. I have become accustom to skipping the 3-4 page long sex and then starting to read again.
I'll continure to buy the dark series, just because I like the stories.

Book Description

She's A Hot Demon On The Run From Hell-- Which Isn't Easy To Do In Heels.

Once upon a time, Jezebel was a powerful succubus, capable of seducing men and sucking out their souls. But that was before Hell put a bounty on her head. Now her only chance to escape a fate far worse than death is to live as a mortal, losing herself in a sea of unfamiliar humanity, in a place where sinners walk hand-in-hand with saints--a place like Belle's strip club in New York City.

Working as an exotic dancer is a piece of cake for a former demon who once specialized in sex. Taking money from men? Please. It's like leading lawyers to the Lake of Fire. Plus the lingerie is great. But she hadn't counted on meeting sexy Paul Hamilton, a man haunted by his past. Good-bye, succubus; hello, lovestruck. Learning all about how complicated--and pleasurable--love can be, Jezebel thinks she's turned her back on Hell.

But Hell hasn't stopped looking for her. The secrets Jezebel holds are the most dangerous of all, the kind every demon in the Underworld would do their worst to protect. Demons are closing in, which is enough to make Jezebel shiver in her G-string. But it's her love for Paul that's going to have deadly consequences...

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2007-09-17

Jezebel the succubus has run away from hell. Taking a job as an exotic dancer, she thinks she's made a fresh start. But it's not that easy to put her past behind her.

It's so refreshing to read about a heroine who is completely comfortable in her own skin. Jezebel/Jesse has a sharp wit and a deliciously wicked sense of humour. She's an incredibly sexual creature and revels in being a succubus, so her new career choice of stripping is a natural one for her to make.

Initially it's hard to work out how we can have sympathy for her, she's such a selfish creature of instinct and need. However, once she takes human form, her newfound mortality begins to change her and she begins a slow almost unnoticeable transition from amoral demon to something else. The first experiences Jesse has as a human are incredibly well written and make you realise how strange it must be to see the world for the first time.

There are really two stories being told here; the first is Jesse's flight from hell and how she copes with being a mortal; the second is about the events leading up to her decision to flee hell (told in flashback). Unfortunately the flashbacks (of which there are several) are intercut with the main story and aren't signposted that well (the first happens in Chapter 6). Leaving the reader confused about what is happening, until you get used to the style.

For people who like to know: - this is written in first person, and there is some strong swearing, but this is in context and is something the person who said it would say.

I think it's slightly misleading that this has been marketed as a romance, I believe it's much more of an urban fantasy. The romantic subplot definitely takes second place to Jesse's story. But this shouldn't put readers off - Jezebel is such a rare outspoken heroine, it's worth taking the time to get to know her. (And kudos to Ms. Kessler for using a Ghostbusters reference. :) )

The Road to Hell (Book 2) is released in November 2007.

5 out of 5 stars A soulless demon finds love.......2007-08-22

Jezebel is a 4,000 year old succubus (a demon) whose job is to entice people into hell through horizontal means. However when she goes AWOL from Hell, tricks a witch into making her human (and stealing that witch's form and credit cards/ID) she sets out on life as a newly born human in New York. The author writes her first experiences of being human, drinking coffee, eating muffins, being in public spaces etc excellently - these were really enjoyable parts of the book.

Jezebel, or Jessie, isn't at all a sympathetic character to start with. She steals the witch's identity, doesn't care about other people and seems largely amoral. However her new human nature is clearly changing that part of her character and she starts to care for people and to change. She gets a job as a stripper in a club, Hell's Belles, which suits her skills from her former career admirably. However she's already bumped into Paul and he is about to cause another big change in her life. On the run from other demons who are trying to drag her back to hell, protected merely by her humanity and with the amulet she wears round her neck, can Jessie keep herself safe and out of hell? And what is it that caused her to leave Hell in the first place?

Rather confusingly a few chapters into this book Jessie seemed to be back working as a succubus and leading a man to hell. It became clear eventually that this was a flashback and there were other examples of this in the book - it might have been helpful for the fact this was backstory to be more clear. However these sections, where Jessie is in Hell, were fascinating; somehow the author has written her description of the different levels in Hell and some of the characters in a lighthearted and yet scary way with definite overtones of Dante.

This is an earthy book with fairly explicit descriptions and a woman who is certainly at home with her feminine side. However there is more to this story than just sex as there's an interesting plot and some significant characterisation of Jessie. Paul, the hero, is rather more of a cipher and we almost learn more about the Satyr Daunuan but there are many good side characters in this story which lift it above the average paranormal romance and made it an easy and fun read.

5 out of 5 stars One hell of a story........2007-07-29

I had a good time reading this book, and it is obvious that first-time author Jackie Kessler did the same in writing it. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Ms. Kessler writes in a clear, straightforward fashion that makes the reading a pleasure. Also, I very much liked the plot and the characters. What fun! I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars 2.5 to 3 stars.......2007-07-22

This book is an easy read, but it is not one that will accompany you once you close the back cover. The book is fun, light but I feel it lackes force or something...

If you like easy reads that don't defy standards, this one is a good book to pass the time. If you want something stronger, pick another book.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the prudish, for sure.......2007-07-09

If you think a book titled "Hell's Belles" -- starring a succubus named Jezebel and taking place largely inside a New York City strip club, no less -- might dip into areas of a sexual nature, you'd be right. First-time author Jackie Kessler is unabashedly lascivious in her writing, so much so one wonders exactly what lies in the depths of her untapped imagination. But "Hell's Belles" exceeds the bounds of lusty paranormal romances, in part by making Jez's love interest one of the least interesting aspects of the story.

Far more appealing is Jezebel's flight from Hell, where her job was the seduction and disposal of evil men. But big changes are afoot in the underworld -- saying what, exactly, would be telling too much -- and Jez has fled to the world above to shed her demon skin and lose herself among the mortals in New York City's thriving sex trade.

But "demon" isn't a job that comes with a cozy retirement plan, and Hell's minions are still trying to track Jesse down and bring her back to the fold. Meanwhile, changes in Hell itself are revealed to readers slowly, leading to far more intelligent theological philosophy than I ever expected to see here.

But yeah, there's a lot of sex, talk about sex, thought about sex and sexual innuendoes, too, so prudes need not apply.

I ordered this as soon as it became available, and read it in one sitting when it arrived. It is a great contintuation of the series. I cant wait for more in the serirs.

3 out of 5 stars Silver Master.......2007-10-07

This book is part of the very interesting futuristic world, "Harmony", Jayne Castle has created. Reluctantly I must admit, plowing through this book is hard work! I love the characters, I love the story, however, getting to a finish becomes tedious.

4 out of 5 stars Jayne does it again.......2007-10-02

I love Jayne Ann Krentz and her evil twin sisters Amada Quick and Jayne Castle. In her latest book on the world of Harmony she delves into murder and mayhem while the hero and heroine find time to solve the mystery fall in love and come out smelling like roses. I have a great fondness for dustbunnies so this book really hits the spot.
Jayne has a special gift in keeping her audience enthralled, I have a rule never read a book without a happy ending and she does that also. I enjoy her present day, futuristic and historical romances.
I have read everything she has written and some more than once and Silver Master will have a space on my bookshelf to be reread again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Another fun paranormal from Jayne Castle.......2007-09-26

Jayne Castle's paranormals are all good fun if rather more lightweight than many of the others being published today. "Silver Master" returns to the world of Harmony featured in her books "After Dark", "After Glow" and "Ghost Hunter". These books are all a good read and the world Jayne Castle (AKA Jayne Ann Krentz or Amanda Quick) has created is enjoyable enough, if rather internally incongruent. Over time and reading the books I've wondered how on earth such a small group of settlers, marooned 200 years ago on a strange planet, can afford to spend time on archaeology and relic-collecting and museums when presumably they're still fighting for survival. Especially as it seems an awful lot of people are involved in the antiquities trade - rather a luxury good in a difficult and hostile time for the settlers. Anyway, if you suspend disbelief it's great fun.

"Silver Master" introduces yet another type of ghost hunter. With the last book we learned about the blue freaks but our hero in this book, Davis Oakes, works with silver light to kill his ghosts - and it also has a few other strange effects on him. One of these side-effects of silver ghost light means that Davis's fiancée was so shocked that she called off their wedding at the last minute, a wedding arranged by a matchmaking agency. Consequently this rather put him off marriage in general and matchmakers in particular.

Unfortunately Davis finds himself having to consult a matchmaker in his professional capacity as an investigator as Celinda Ingram was known to have purchased an artefact that had been stolen from a powerful man in their city, and the thief had then turned up dead. Celinda's tame dust-bunny runs off with the artefact after she has agreed to give it back and so Davis and Celinda have to spend time together whilst they hope the dust bunny returns the relic. As they learn more about each others' histories they also find that someone else is looking for the relic, someone who is violent and that Celinda isn't safe. Can she be kept safe, both from the person after the relic and from her family's matchmaking expectations?

This is a very easy read although the background information on the world of Harmony isn't as well detailed as in earlier books and so readers new to the series starting here might be occasionally confused. Nevertheless it's good fun to read and although not particularly deep in terms of characterisation, world-building or plot it's inoffensive stuff and will definitely satisfy those who have liked her other books in this series.

4 out of 5 stars Cute Addition to The Harmony Series.......2007-09-26

Silver Master tells the story of matchmaker Celinda Ingram and security specialist Davis Oakes. They're both psychics as is just about everyone on the world of Harmony, and they are trying to figure out the mystery behind what looks to be like a red plastic knob which Celinda's dust bunny Ariminta pestered her into buying, but which turns out to be something far more ancient and powerful. Like the other Harmony books, the author manages to mix suspense and humor in a satisfying way. I also like it that she drops in references to the Arcane Society which she writes extensively about in her historical fiction series as well as her contemporary ones. I like other reviewers absolutely loved the dust bunnies! They added rather than distracted from the story. One word of warning: while each book in this series could stand alone, I think they make much more sense and are more enjoyable when you read them in order.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars hauntingly beautiful.......2007-09-10

I particularly enjoyed descriptions of Helen/Jenny's excitement about being able to taste, smell and feel things such as a simple apple.

Some reviewers have described the book as light reading for adults. I am old and found the book very moving.

It does seem strange to me that books are classified as "teen" just because the characters are teenagers.

Actually, Helen and James are emotionally in their 20s, despite being in teen bodies. It is true that they are dealing with teen problems, but from an adult perspective. However, I think the book would be fine for anyone who has reached puberty and has had proper sex-ed.

Perhaps Jenny's born-again parents are something of a stereotype. Her father getting hot for her after he thinks she has had sex with a grown man seemed a bit gratuitous. But as long as there are millions of hypocritical fundamentalists (of various religions) spreading poison in the world, there need to be books that show the evil consequences of that behavior.

3 out of 5 stars Intersting.....but.......2007-09-01

I got into this book and wasn't sure that I was going to make the effort to finish it--but I am not a quitter and I had to see it through to the end. I found that the writing was very unique and the language of the story was beautifully written. I am glad that I read the whole book and didn't give up, but I would not recommend this book to anyone I know especially a young adult. There is a lot of offensive language in it--over the top I think even for today's standards. The situations that the main characters find themselves in are very adult and very descriptive--almost too much for me and way too much for a young adult. I found the concept of the "Christian" family portrayed in this book to be unrealistic and badly stereotyped.
I cried at the end of this book and was glad I gave it a chance--but read it at your own risk.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting "slant" .......2007-08-22

This was captivating with an interesting twist on the ghost / haunting concept.

I wasn't too fond of some of the characterizations, or the frank language - I think the same concepts may be carried off without being as obvious in some respects.

The novel did keep me turning the pages, though I thought the ending was rushed.

4 out of 5 stars Slow start but a strong finish.......2007-08-20

This book started off slow. It took me a couple of chapters to understand what exactly was going on with the main character. Once I connected with the main character though I was intrested and the story had captivated me. I have never read a story like this with this type of plot or characters. It was refreshing and the story compelled me until the beautiful ending. I did not give this book 5 stars because of the time it took to hook me in- I almost stopped reading it, although I am very glad that I did not. The story is quite beautiful and I really enjoy the meaning I found hidden underneath the plot. This is a book that I feel has meaning on many levels. I would say a good age to read this story is in high school or older. You can tell an English teacher wrote the book with all of the many nods to great literature peppered through the book. I think if you are open minded and enjoy a good romantic ghost story this book will be a great read for you!

5 out of 5 stars Great book, a winner in my eyes.......2007-08-10

I've read this book twice now and I can honestly say it made me cry both times. Laura Whitcomb's writing style pulled me in and I found myself finishing the book in a day (both times) People complain that it stereotypes Christianity but to me that is far from true (Christianity isn't even the POINT of the novel). But in regards to those comments, sure, it might be stereotypical, but there are both sides to the spectrum of Christianity- some families are definitely like the one in the novel. Back to the important stuff- I highly recommend this novel to anyone in need of a good read.

I loved the Orchid series books she wrote. And then I really enjoyed the two books in this series. It was different, but same kind of interesting setting as the Orchid series. For years I've been checking back at book stores hoping she has written more in these series. But no such luck for me.

5 out of 5 stars Follow up to "After Dark" and another good fun outing.......2007-04-14

This book follows "After Dark" which includes the same characters and describes how Lydia Smith and Emmett London met. It isn't necessary to have read the first book to understand this one (in fact I read this one first and didn't have any difficulties in understanding what's going on) but it does rather give away some of the events in the first book, if you haven't yet read it.

The events in After Glow take place a month after the end of the previous book. Lydia is still working in Shrimpton's museum, is continuing her relationship with Emmett London, and is getting along quietly with her life after the excitement of the murders and the discovery of the dreamstone jar in the previous book. However she finds herself at the scene of another death - this time a former professor of archaeology who appears to have overdosed on drugs. As she waits for the police to arrive Emmett London meets up with her and she discovers that the head of the Cadence Guild, the local Ghost Hunter organisation which sometimes seems rather like its own private army, has been shot. Emmett is now acting head of the Guild, for reasons which he eventually explains to Lydia.

The first section of this book is taken up with Lydia coming to terms with Emmett's position in the Guild. She's not sure about their relationship - how seriously he takes it - and has strong misgivings about the Guild. But when she discovers there's a threat to Emmett's safety with this new position she does all she can to protect him, involving some surprising actions. The threads of events start to click together for Lydia and she realises the death of the Professor might have something to do with her 'Lost Weekend', a 48 hour amnesia that she experienced 7 months ago and which put an end to her highbrow career. When events get nasty Lydia has to fight for her safety and freedom as well as understanding more about her relationship with Emmett.

Jayne Castle (aka Jayne Ann Krentz and Amanda Quick) is good at writing books that are well paced and interesting. Her worldbuilding in this book isn't brilliant - there are a lot of irritating repetitions of things like "rez" to apparently show it's a different type of world but the whole underlying Ghosts and Traps ideas are enough and some of her writing seems to be rather silly. Still, the characters are good, particularly Lydia who is feisty and honest and appealing, and the relationship with Emmett isn't the main focus of the book, there's more about the plot and whodunit aspect to keep the reader's attention. It's a worthy sequel to the previous book and one that I can recommend.

5 out of 5 stars The "after glow" after reading After Glow.......2007-02-10

I really, really liked this book. It picks up just weeks after the events in After Dark which can be read in the book Harmony. The main reason I am so enthusiastic about this book is that After Dark took me into a completely new genre and After Glow has made me an avowed "Harmonic".

This futuristic/romantic/mystery was a delight for me from beginning to end. Since I had already read After Dark it was fascinating to find that Jayne Castle had written this book as if the first book had been an installment, not a separate writing. All the lovely characters were there (except for those killed off in the first book, of course!) with Lydia and Emmett moving directly into their second adventure. As a futuristic novel I am happy to say that I had no trouble coming up with my concept of what the "world" (both above and below ground) looked like. That is pretty important as I have never ventured into any alien landscapes in my reading material. As a romantic novel I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the relationship between Lydia and Emmett mature. Some reviewers did not find favor with the lack of descriptions for the physical relationship side for this couple. As for me, I have a great imagination and appreciate Ms Castle giving me the opportunity to utilize it and fill in the blanks myself. Minute descriptive details are not always welcomed. As a mystery novel it was quite good. I consider myself a huge fan of mysteries and I was satisfied with this plotting. The author threw in a double blind but there is only so much she could do to draw attention away from the villian of the piece. Still, I kept on reading and I think that is what the author wants to hear.

All in all, a lovely book. An absorbing book, and a book which makes me want to read more about those folks of Harmony.

5 out of 5 stars Dust bunnies!.......2006-08-24

2nd in Castle's books about Harmony, a colonized planet that has been cut off from Earth, this is another "dust-bunny" book. It follows After Dark - and continues the story of Lydia Smith, former professor and current curator, and her Ghost Hunter boyfriend Emmett London, who is trying desperately to avoid the life of Guild Master. Lydia and Emmett get caught up in guild business when the local guild master checks himself into a hospital after an attempt on his life, and Emmett has been selected as the stand-in until his recovery. Lydia, as usual, winds up in the midst of trouble when she walks into a meeting to find the other person dead of an apparent overdose. Emmett and Lydia, accompanied by Fuzz, a dust bunny, follow the clues and mazes while dodging ghost attacks to find the links to all of the mysteries, and their own happiness. You definitely want to read After Dark first, and follow it with Ghost Hunter.

1 out of 5 stars Yet another failure.......2006-05-11

the story from "After dark" gets a second wind. Now Emmet has to act as guild boss and Lydia manages to "save" him from peril by marrying him. The same idiotic problems of a love affair spiced with two-three rather boring sex scenes, the worst use of an alien enviroment ever to be found in a book.
Still, a beautiful cover. Too bad, again.
Not recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Completely disappointed.......2007-10-05

After reading Frank's "Jacob," and loving it, I was really looking forward to this one. But, I have to say I was extremely disappointed. I couldn't believe how difficult it was just to get through the first few chapters! What the hell happened? The writing in this one is so freaking heavy-handed!! In the first one, I loved the premise, loved the characters, and the writing was engaging. In this one I couldn't have cared less about either, had to read some passages over and over and had to fight to even continue reading. Again, a BIG disappointment for me. I don't know if I'll continue with the series now.

4 out of 5 stars Giddy About Gideon.......2007-09-16

Gideon is Frank's second installment in her paranormal romance series The Nightwalkers. (For more on this series check out the first book, Jacob). The character Gideon is the oldest living Demon and highly repected within his race. He is also reluctantly but powerfully drawn to Legna, the young sister of the Demon King Noah. Vampires and lycanthropes become a more active part of the story in this book than in the first.

Gideon initially feels a little slower and less engaging than the first book (although still very enjoyable). However, the book gains momentum as it progesses and ends leaving you eagerly awaiting the next installment.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting premise.......2007-09-11

I jumed in at book #2 with this series and am intrigued enough to go back and read #1. It's a nice detour from vampires and werewolves and I found the characters believable and well-developed, and the plot intriguing and well-written. I'd give it 3 3/4 stars if I could. I think it's worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, comparable to the Carpathians.......2007-08-31

Excellent read and excellent, wonderful and exciting characters. The build up was worth the wait. I liked this book way more than Jacob. Jacob did not live up to HIS reputation to me and I thought his heroinne was a little childish. But the series is awesome. I cannot wait until Elijah's book comes out in December, 2007.

5 out of 5 stars one word?.......2007-08-15

Well actually I do have one word "EXCELLENT"! Run don't walk and get this book. I Personally loved this book and when book number 2 came out I was first in line. Personally can't wait for more books to come down the line.

5 out of 5 stars Love books like these!.......2007-10-17

I love books like these with one or two well known authors I read frequently. And some other well known authors I have yet to read. I especially love it when they write anthologies, I get a little sampling of their work. I have expanded my "must by authors" list from this book alone! LOVED LOVED LOVED Cheyenne McCray's story! Maryjanice Davidson is not a my most favorite author. But after this book I am going shopping for some of her books. Buy the book, you won't be dissapointed. And if you are...send it to me so that I have a spare copy to read when mine gets too dog-earred and worn! lol

4 out of 5 stars No Rest.......2007-10-16

All 4 of theses stories are great. Davidson's Majicka is great, funny and entertaining, anyone who can have an angry fairy and a prissy vampire well you get the rest when you read it.
Handleland"s Voodoo king sounds yummy
Mcray's war continues with some awesome warriors that could make you drool.
And Warren's normal human who time travels into trouble is worth the provision.

I really enjoyed these 4 stories I hope you do too.

4 out of 5 stars A bit of each author's worlds.......2007-10-14

If you have never read a book by these authors, these stories might make you look for some of their novels. Each is set in the world of the author. I enjoyed each glimpse into that world except for the fact they were to short.

MaryJanice Davidson tells us about a girl who attracts different supernatural characters. They simply move in with her. Finally one she can love comes along. He has come to teach her about what she is. If there was one story not quite up to snuff, this is it.

Lori Handeland tells the story of a voodoo priest and the FBI agent sent to find a serial killer who is unseen and leaves no trace.

Cheyenne McCray tells us Conlan and Sydney's story. If you read WICKED MAGIC you will recognize him as the fae caught with the high queen. Now sent to Earth to help in the battle with Balor.

Christine Warren returns us to her world, to see Randy take a chance and cast a spell, she who supposedly has no magic, somehow moves herself back in time to meet a very attractive witch. He doesn't stay a stranger for long.

All were good but not great. Still sometimes a short story is all you have time for.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely worth a read!.......2007-10-14

If you're in the mood for some short but enjoyable paranormal romance, look no further, this is a surprisingly good collection by some of the better paranormal authors out there.

All are tied to previous writings by these authors, whether directly--such as Cheyenne McCray & Christine Warrens stories-- or indirectly, in the offerings by MaryJanice Davidson and Lori Handeland. All are stand alone, and do not require having read the previous stories although having read at least some of them myself, it does help. They also tie up nicely at the end, leaving plenty of room for sequels but unlike some I have read, not leaving you ticked off the author didn't resolve things better.

My personal favorite is MaryJanice Davidsons "The Magicka" and in true Davidson style, had me laughing throughout. I also found this offering meatier than some of her other recent stuff, which was a wonderful surprise. I'm not a fan of Handeland's NightCreatures and Hunter-Searcher series, neither do I care for McCray's witch and warrior series but I did enjoy these shorter offerings, particularly Handelands, whose writing I like, I just have never liked the Werewolves being the bad guys. However, this story steps away from that but still ties it together--loosely. McCray's was also good, perhaps because it was so short. Fans of Warren's "Others" will enjoy this offering, as well as the brief look into what is current in the lives of past characters.

I didn't give this 5 stars because I didn't LOVE it, but I definitely enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone who either has read these authors before and is looking for something new between installments in their individual series, or anyone who might want to get a taste of what these authors stories are like.

5 out of 5 stars four enjoyable romantic fantasies.......2007-10-13

"The Majicka" by MaryJanice Davidson. Micah seeking the next Majicka has come to Cannon Falls, Minnesota where he meets Ireland and her roommates (a vampire, a fairy, a werewolf, and a zombie always under foot) at the Shea family farm.

"Voodoo Moon" by Lori Handeland. FBI agent Dana "I'm not Skully" Duran does not believe in magic yet the just the facts point to a serial killer practitioner. In Devil's Fork, she meets Sheriff Marcus Brody who asked Quantico to send him a Behavioral Analyst; however, the paranormal is not her expertise.

"Breath of Magic" by Cheyenne McCray. As the D'Anu witches and D'Danann warriors battle Darkwolf, Sydney and Conlan battle their feelings for one another.

"Any Witch Way She Can" by Christine Warren. Miranda is the unthinkable, a human in a family of paranormal. However, Randy casts a love spell personal ad answered by Miranda.

These are four enjoyable romantic fantasies with each tale unique. An added bonus is that Lori Handeland and Cheyenne McCray have provides tales within their respective mythos. NO REST FOR THE WITCHES is a fabulous anthology.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2007-07-05

I enjoyed the first book, Out of the Night, the second book Seduced by the Night was fairly good, but this book was third rate at best. I couldn't get into the characters. The plot was stupid. It just seemed to be thrown together. The author had to find a way to incorporate Detective John Boehler into being a Night Slayer by having him turned in the middle of the book. The man is now half human half vampire and he doesn't seem upset about it or have any plausible reaction to it. It was hurried and lacked action or suspense. The love story was pathetic. I did not care for this book at all. I don't know that I would invest in her next book. The series has lost most of it's earlier appeal. The first book was fresh, inventive, and had plenty of surprises and twists and turns. This last book was difficult to get through.

    2 out of 5 stars Bad.......2007-03-29

The first two in the series were fairly entertaining. This last entry made the series not worth reading anymore. From the first, Jessica Winslow was annoying with Detective John Boehler not much better. The characters were really cardboard and stired no emotion except irritation. I skipped the middle and went to the end.

Readers are encouraged to try J. R. Ward's series or that written by Marjorie Liu. Nalini Singh has also started a wonderful new series. All are well written and entertaining. Right now there seems to be a dearth of new paranormal books published.

"Tempted in the Night" is really not worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars The best yet!.......2007-03-09

This is a book you will not want to put down. More charachters, more fun. I can't wait till #4.

4 out of 5 stars For lovers of paranormal romance.......2007-02-13

Robin T. Popp brings us yet another thrilling adventure in this her latest Night Slayer book, Tempted in the Night.

Beautiful brunette Jessica Winslow lives with one obsession--destroying as many vampires as she can. Her lust for revenge has its roots in her childhood, when she witnessed one of the undead brutally kill her own mother. Now, she will stop at nothing to seek justice and protect innocent victims from the same fate.

Detective John Boehler has one aim in mind--finding a savage serial killer who's terrorizing the D.C. area. That is, until a group of strange vigilantes called the Exsanguinators capture the criminal and leave his body devoid of blood. There's only one problem: What happens when the serial killer awakens as one of the undead?

In spite of their mutual attraction, which threatens to do them more harm than good, Jessica and John join forces to destroy the serial killer vampire...but at what price? Are they ready to fall into darkness and lose their souls to achieve their goal?

The story starts with an exciting scenario, grabbing the reader into the world of the characters, then maintains a rather quick pace until the end. There are enough romance and supernatural thrills to keep fans of the genre happy. Popp creates her own chupacabra myth and hierarchy of vampires, adding a certain level of originality to the plot.

The only aspect of the novel that didn't work for me was characterization. Jessica, though sympathetic, somehow didn't come through enough to make me care her predicament. I had problems with the hero as well, mainly because of character inconsistencies--he seems to behave like two different men in the first and second parts of the book. These two problems made me lose connection to the plot during the second half of the story.

Armchair Interviews says: All in all, this is an entertaining book that will be enjoyed by most fans of vampire romance.

    4 out of 5 stars 4 stars.......2007-02-03

Jessica Winslow's first meeting with Detective John Boehler is less than auspicious; he arrests her and puts her in a cell for the criminally insane. After all, she was tearing through his city with a sword. What he did not know was that she was hunting vampires. That would have made all the difference. He's also determined to stop vampires, one in particular, a killer he let go. They find themselves working together in a united cause, but things are more deadly than either had ever anticipated. Along with the heros and heroines from the past Nightslayer books, the duo has a mission that will change or end their lives. Perhaps a bit of both.

**** Action and romance keep the pages flying to a heart-stopping conclusion. The world of the Nightslayers develops and becomes more detailed in this book. Shades of grey add new depth and one of the most fascinating secondary characters to date plays a large role in this installment of the saga. You will be left wanting more. ****

    Book Description

My name is Sarah Dearly, and I've got major problems. Last month, I was turned into a vampire by the world's worst blind date. Then I may have, totally by accident, started a war between the mostly peaceful bloodsuckers and a bunch of sociopathic vamp hunters who have nicknamed me the Slayer of Slayers. Now I'm being used as bait to draw out the hunters' bad-ass leader, while my gorgeous 600-year-old boyfriend Thierry seems to be blowing me off, and my sizzle-hot, fanged friend Quinn is trying to turn my self-defense lessons into make-out sessions. So you know what? I'm done. I've had it. There comes a time when a vamp has to just suck it up and go after what she wants. And as soon as I figure out what that is, that's exactly what I'll do...

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars To Much.......2007-09-03

To be sarcastic is one thing, but in this book it's tooo much. It really started to irritate me.

    5 out of 5 stars Hilarious...........2007-08-25

Sarah Dearly is still adjusting to the whole vampire lifestyle. Unfortunately, rumors of her escapades in BITTEN AND SMITTEN have escalated to an utterly ridiculous level as Sarah is now being dubbed the "Slayer of Slayers". Thierry, a Master Vampire and her boyfriend, hires bodyguards for Sarah, but who will protect her heart from Thierry? And is Quinn, the hunter turned vampire, actually the man for Sarah instead?

What a hilarious story! Michelle Rowen's fantastic sense of humor kept me laughing throughout FANGED AND FABULOUS. Sarah continues to stumble headlong into trouble, but her loyalty and snarky attitude make her all the more endearing throughout each situation she finds herself trapped in. Despite being a sequel that immediately follows and builds upon the events in BITTEN AND SMITTEN, FANGED AND FABULOUS is easily read as a stand alone. The events are recapped, albeit in quite an amusing manner, so that all of the necessary back story is available for readers new to the series.

The romantic angle gets a bit of a twist in FANGED AND FABULOUS. Michelle Rowen takes some chances as the outcome of Sarah's love for Thierry and Quinn's love for Sarah remains in flux as the reader wonders just how all of this can resolve with that crucial happily-ever-after. Never fear, however, as the ending is absolutely perfect.

FANGED AND FABULOUS is an entertaining and lighthearted story that only makes me want to read more about these fantastic characters. Michelle Rowen has certainly outdone herself with this one, as even the secondary characters are simply begging for their own happy endings. Keep them coming, Ms. Rowen!

4 out of 5 stars Zany Vampire Tale.......2007-08-17

Judging from all accounts, the vampire romance novel is here to stay for a good long time. As with any other venue, there will be some good practitioners and some who also ran.

After reading FANGED & FABULOUS, Michelle Rowen's second novel about new vampire Sarah Dearly, I'm inclined to believe that the author and heroine are both going to be around for a bit. Or a bite.

Rowen drinks deeply in the same vein (and I've got to stop that soon) that MaryJanice Davidson (UNDEAD AND UNEMPLOYED) does. In Rowen's world, as in Davidson's, vampires are a many-splendored thing, but not necessarily to always be taken seriously.

Sarah Dearly is a riot and a mess, a combination which always seems to strike gold in the romance market. In the previous novel, BITTEN & SMITTEN, Sarah was turned into a vampire by a blind date and very nearly killed by vampire hunters. She also became the lover of an ancient vampire named Thierry de Bennicoeur, who apparently wants to keep Sarah at arm's distance. During the events of that novel, she ended up becoming known as the Slayer of Slayers, a reputation that guarantees her eternal enmity with the vampire slayers stalking her kind - but it also kind of serves to keep them at arm's distances as well.

The new novel brings Sarah a lot of problems. Her relationship with Thierry isn't going well. To make matters even worse, she seems to be getting along better with her lover's wife than her lover (there's a definite problem with getting a divorce when you're a vampire, as Sarah discovers). And there's only so much sympathy Sarah can take from the wife before she's ready to snap.

To complicate things further, Sarah is also invited into the inner circle of vampires, called the Ring, by another ancient vampire, Nicolai. It doesn't help that Nicolai seems to be at odds with Thierry for reasons known only to them.

Then someone blows up Sarah's apartment. She loses her "shard," a mystical object that is the only way she has of seeing her reflection (she can't even check her look without it and has to depend on the honesty of her friends!), a pair of secondhand Pradas that were to die for, and all her other belongings.

With her vulnerability brought into sharp focus, and wanting to do a little butt-kicking in revenge, Sarah starts taking self-defense lessons from the two bodyguards Thierry assigns to keep watch over her. But even as she starts learning to take care of herself, things take another turn for the worse when Gideon Chase - the master hunter of the vampire slayers - locks onto her trail and determines to stake her himself.

Rowen keeps the book moving along quickly. Her wry humor is a lot like Davidsons, and readers of both series may enjoy the resonance between the books or be disturbed by it, but she's definitely one to read as the vampire romance novels start getting a bit long in the tooth. (Sorry. Compulsive.)

The plot circles a little bit before striking out into new territory, but the scenery is pleasant and the company is good. FANGED & FABULOUS is only Rowen's third novel, so she's entitled to spend some time sharpening her craft. However, she's off to an outstanding start and I'm eagerly awaiting her next books.

4 out of 5 stars Smitten all over again.......2007-08-03

Can I just start by saying Michelle Rowen has done it again?! For those who have yet to pick up the Immortality Bites series, I say, "Hel-looo, studipity leak!" Rowen rocks the vampire tale, and in F&F Sarah Dearly returns too funny to fathom and Theirry is back too hot to handle. Yowzer, that is one tall, pale, and broody vamp! The third installment just can't get here soon enough for me!

1 out of 5 stars A good concept gone bad.......2007-07-17

I don't know where to begin. Sarah Dearly, the heroine borders on TSTL. And can't seem to fix any of the messes she finds herself in. Oh, but there's always someone else around to help her out. That I could probably deal with for a while, because MJ Davidson's Queen Betsy is just coming into her own.

What I can't handle is the "love interest" for Sarah. There is no chemistry between the two, but even worse, he does something so unforgivable in this latest book, that it would truly take a stupid woman to take him back.

I hope Quin's story is better.
