Book Description
Her Serene Highness, Princess Grace of Monaco, the legendary Hollywood screen siren, Grace Kelly is an American icon whose beauty is unrivalled, and whose oft-imitated aristocratic style and cool elegance has never been eclipsed.
Wendy Leigh- after three years’ research – has gained unprecedented access to over one hundred sources who have never talked about Grace before, including nine of her until now undisclosed romances - among them an English aristocrat, an American tennis player, and a Hollywood legend – and also including her priest friend, Father Peter Jacobs, and Bernard Combemal, the former head of the S.B.M, the consortium that runs Monaco.
Wendy Leigh provides revealing new details about Grace’s life, including her premarital romantic swan song which took place during her voyage to Monaco, the hitherto untold story of her troubling relationship with bridesmaid, Carolyn Reybold and the moving story of Grace’s lifelong relationship with actor, David Niven.
Wendy Leigh paints a compelling portrait of Grace, the ambitious young actress, Grace, the dutiful princess who transformed the principality of Monaco into a jet-set haven, Grace, the kind-hearted philanthropist, Grace, the loving mother, and Grace, the patriotic American.
Wendy Leigh’s book has not been written for those readers who wish to view Grace as a saint, but for those who – like Leigh herself – believes that she was a strong and wonderful woman.

Very Disappointed.......2007-08-29
I have to say up front that I didn't finish this book. That's pretty unheard of for me, but from the very start, the author seemed to bounce around from one time period to another, then back again. It was confusing. I also lost track of who all the many characters were. There were several mentions throughout the book of letters Grace Kelly wrote to "Prudy", yet I couldn't remember who exactly Prudy was. Thankfully, her last name was finally mentioned somewhere near the middle of the book and I could look her up in the Index to see who she was. Maybe it's just me, but I was looking forward to reading this book and from the first chapter, I was disappointed in the way it was written and the shallowness of character that was portrayed for Princess Grace. Not finishing this book says it all!
Nothing New Here.......2007-08-28
I was disappointed in this book for several reasons. I think that James Spada's 1987 biography was much better and it was heavily quoted in this mediocre account of Grace's life before and after becomming a princess. Also, the chapters jumped around in time and I found that format annoying.
My advise is buy Spada's book and skip this one. You won't miss a thing.
Thin Tabloid Fodder.......2007-08-12
The author says "she doesn't rehash." That is all she did. No real insight at all to the life of Grace Kelly. At least nothing the world doesn't already know. Even when she did hint at something new, she did not elaborate or delve further. Hack writing.
Plenty of gossip, but as a well rounded biography, it falls short.......2007-08-01
The majority of this biography is devoted to speculation as to the romantic liaisons of Grace Kelly, both before and after her marriage. It's a topic that has been covered before, and as is the case with Jacqueline Onassis, it seems no two Kelly biographers are in agreement as to which men she did or did not sleep with. As a result, I tend to take such speculation with a grain of salt. If this type of juicy gossip interests you, this would definitely be a good read.
On the other hand, if you are looking for a comprehensive biography, you'd be better off reading "Grace" by Robert Lacey. I felt that Ms. Leigh's book glossed over Grace's years as Princess of Monaco. We are told that Grace was deeply unhappy, and that both Grace and Rainier had affairs. And that's about it, really. The car accident that took Grace's life is barely mentioned, and the book ends rather abruptly with Rainier turning off Grace's life support.
There are some rather glaring errors here. As mentioned by other reviewers, the book includes a reference to the divorce of Jackie and Ari Onassis, which never happened. Princess Caroline is described as being named after an ancestor of Rainier, Queen Caroline of Monaco. Monaco is a principality and has never had a queen. I would guess that the author is referring to Monaco's Prince Charles, for whom Monte Carlo is named. I suppose no book is ever perfect, but someone should have caught those errors, as they reflect badly upon the author.
I'd recommend this book to those who are fascinated by rumors and gossip about Grace Kelly's love life. If you are looking for a good biography that covers all of the bases, look elsewhere.
Dissapointed.......2007-06-27
I was absolutely dissapointed with this book. The story tells us how UNHAPPY Grace Kelly was when she left for Monaco. Absolutely another picture one can find in another book. I wouldn't buy that book if I knew what poor content it is. It's nothing more than a try to make another sensation basing on "a friend told", "one suspects that...". Didn't like it

Grace. A Portrayal of a Beautiful Role Model both Inside and.......2004-04-13
This stunning large full color picture book keeps Grace alive, by showing her early days as an actress, her wedding to Prince of Monaco, her role as wife and mother, her visit to an orphanage, her role as Princess of Monaco, her relationship with her children, as well as Hollywood friends she missed so much.
Howell Conant brings outstanding photography, along with intimate and respectfully detailed explanations for each picture that is portrayed.
Grace has always been one of my favorite role models. Through this beautiful book you will learn that: "Grace had a special sympathy for Monaco's aged, ordering changes in the décor of the principality's only old-age home to make it cheerier. But the plight of Monaco's orphans touched her the most. Each year, she would hold a Christmas party for the children of the orphanage and give them all presents."
I love this book and highly recommend it to anyone who admired her. Barbara Rose, author of, `Individual Power' and `If God Was Like Man'
Delightful book portrays Grace's Glamour, and Regality.......2003-01-13

I love this book!!!.......1999-07-10
This book is great because it has candid photos of Grace Kelly just doing what any normal person would do. Like fixing a sandwich. This book is a wonderful picture book of her life.
A Touching and Playful Photographic Tribute.......1999-03-21
Howell Conant's "Grace: An Intimate Portrait by Her Friend and Favorite Photographer" is a touching, playful and elegant photographic tribute that captures the essence of the legendary Hollywood star and princess. Conant's gorgeous photographs of the late Princess Grace are enchanting and give warm insight into her career as movie star, princess and mother. Conant's personal quotes concerning Princess Grace, her family and her duties as a member of the oldest reigning royal family in europe allow a priviledged peek inside a world that was not always so different from the world outside. Each photo has a wonderful story behind it and the book, itself, is a touching tribute that depicts Grace de Monaco as far more than a former movie star and princess. It reveals the warm, nurturing, witty and sparkling human being behind the mythical "Ice Princess".

She was an Oscar-winning Hollywood actress; he the scion of Europe's longest reigning monarchy. The marriage of movie star Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier Grimaldi of Monaco (a romance ironically spawned by a chance, MGM publicity-driven photo op) was one of the 20th century's most enchanting fables come to life. Yet, in veteran Hollywood biographer J. Randy Taraborelli's retelling, (the first comprehensive chronicle of the royal couple's romance and quarter-century reign) their day-to-day struggle with romantic inertia and a legacy of familial dysfunction cast their fairy tale existence in a bittersweet light long before the 1982 automobile accident that took Grace's life.
Taraborelli's struggle to walk the fine line between the respectful biography he intends and the salacious, tell-all exposes he decries makes for occasionally awkward passages. However, the author eventually succeeds in giving his royal subjects--and the ongoing conflicts with their respective families--a familiar, all-too-human scale. --Jerry McCulley
Book Description
Grace Kelly was swept away when the handsome Prince Rainier, a man she barely knew, asked for her hand in marriage. After a series of relationships with married co-stars, she was exhausted by the show-business lifestyle. If she married Rainier, she would be more than just a movie star, she would be Her Serene RoyalHighness Princess Grace. Once in the palace, however, Grace found herself trapped in a fairy tale of her own making. Forced to make sacrifices that cut deeply into the core of who she was as a woman, she would then surrender her desires and ambitions for her spouse and her children. Grace and Rainier may have been royalty, but they were also husband and wife, and parents-and, as such, just as vulnerable to the conflicts that can contaminate any household. Drawing upon hundreds of exclusive interviews with family and friends, ONCEUPONATIME portrays its subjects with passion and sympathy, revealing Grace, Rainier,Caroline,Albert, and Stephanie in ways both startling and compelling.

Too Much Whitewashing of Rainier.......2007-07-30
Taraborrelli was clearly fascinated by his primary subject, Grace, but it appears it was Prince Rainier whom he truly fell in love with.
He never once mentions Rainier's notorious infidelities, which began as soon as Grace married him, and continued until she died. According to Wendy Leigh's new book "True Grace", she strayed too, but her affairs started off as quid pro quo for Rainier's constant mistresses (and continued from isolation and loneliness).
This omission is profoundly prejudicial to Grace because it makes it look like she was just too shallow to give up her attachment to her movie career and thus made herself morbidly unhappy with her new life in Monaco. In fact, she did struggle with that loss, but her greatest heartbreak in Monaco was that she married a philandering, obnoxious, overbearing, insensitive and dismissive popinjay of a prince.
Taraborrelli should have waited for Rainier's death to write Grace's biography. Maybe then he wouldn't have been so tempted to whitewash Rainier into the caring, tender, appreciative and supportive husband he most certainly was not.
Shame on you Randy.
A Real Life Fairy Tale?.......2007-01-11
This book details the lives of Grace Kelly and Rainier Grimaldi otherwise known as Princess Grace and Prince Rainier of Monaco both before and after their "marriage of the century."
Grace Kelly was born in Pittsburgh, PA. In 1929 to Jack and Margret Kelly. She had an older sister Margaret (Peggy) and older brother Jack Jr (Kell) as well as a younger sister Elizabeth Anne (Lizanne). From the time that she was young she wanted to be an actress. When she was a teenager she modeled to pay for an acting school and thanks to her uncle George got some early work on the stage. Soon after she started making movies such as High Noon (with Gary Cooper), Mogambo (with Clark Gable) and won an Oscar for her portrayal in The Country Girl. It was because of this that she was offered the opportunity to go to Cannes to the Cannes Film Festival. During her time in France she also was offered the opportunity to go to Monaco to visit Prince Rainier little realizing that the visit would change her life.
Prince Rainier was born in 1923. His mother was the illegitimate daughter of the Prince of Monaco and married a French Duke in 1920. Rainier had a younger sister named Antoinette. When Rainier was six his parents divorced and he and Antoinette were mostly raised by their grandfather. Rainier was educated in England and France and in 1949 became heir to his grandfather's throne after his mother and sister renounced it. He became Prince of Monaco in 1950. During this time he was single, but dating an actress. Shortly before Grace Kelly's visit he and the actress broke up.
Several months after the meeting between Grace and Rainier he came to the United States. Grace and Rainier used this time to better know each other and shortly after Christmas they became engaged. After several months of negotiations they where married in Monaco. Nine months later they had their first child, Caroline, and five months after that Grace was pregnant with Prince Albert. They later added to the family with princess Stephanie.
The marriage between Princess Grace and Prince Rainier was not always the best, but ultimalty they loved each other and their three children. When Grace was killed in 1981 after a car crash Rainier mourned her for the rest of his life.
This book is better than 3.5 stars........2006-05-19
This book gets 5 stars for research, 5 stars for presentation (simply a photo of Grace in THAT wedding dress justifies a book existing) and 4 stars for a good read; It's not that it could have been any better, it's just that the story is ultimately sad. However, I think the subject matter was taken very seriously by the author, and unlike other reviewers here, I consider the thoughts expressed to be well thought out and supported by the material that was uncovered in the process, including that from interviews. What other material is ever likely to be uncovered on this subject?? This book is better than 3.5 stars.
The American Aristocrat who Became a European Princess.......2006-04-16
Like Jackie Kennedy, Grace Kelly was born to a very privileged life in Philadelphia and was a debutant before she was a Hollywood Star. Cool, poised, aloof, and classy she was the blonde counterpart to Kennedy's dark mysterious allure. But her fairytale life had no happy ending and despite its glamour was all too human.
princess grace.......2005-10-06
anyone interested in the life of grace kelly or the principality
of monaco should definitely read this book.
the author goes in depth about the joys and sorrows of her
(the princess') life to the point that it makes the reader feel
like you personally knew her;a very emotional book to read.
the small independent state of monaco came rather close to losing its sovereignty to france
but thanks to the story in this book it maintains its unique identity in todays modern world.
Book Description
One of the most admired women in the world, Grace Kelly (1929–1982) is remembered for her beauty, poise, and style. Her “fairy-tale” wedding to Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956 was one of the most celebrated of the century. To commemorate its 50th anniversary, this lovely book tells the story behind her wedding gown, cap, veil, shoes, and prayer book—all given by the new princess to the Philadelphia Museum of Art shortly after the ceremony.
Philadelphia-born Grace Kelly rocketed to Hollywood stardom, becoming a major box-office draw and winning an Academy Award. She also was an icon of classic American style, which became known as the “Grace Kelly Look.” After examining the development of the star’s on- and off-screen style, the book focuses on her magnificent wedding dress, designed by Helen Rose and made by MGM Studios under top secret security. Public interest in the star’s wedding dress was intense, and it remains one of the most popular objects in the Museum’s collection.
Stunning color images detail the wedding dress, accessories, and attendants’ dresses, which are also owned by the Museum. Numerous historical photographs illustrate the actress’s career, style, and famous wedding in Monaco.

Very helpful.......2007-10-08
I bought this book for the sole purpose of learning more about Grace Kelly's wedding dress. At the time I bought the book, I was planning my own wedding and I wanted a wedding dress that looked similar to Grace's. However, I had not been able to find good pictures of the dress online or in other books I had of Grace. Therefore, I was delighted with this book, which has beautiful pictures of the dress. Furthermore, the book has also proven to be a great addition to my collection of Grace Kelly books as it provides particular attention and detail to one of the most important days in Grace's life. I highly recommend the book to anyone who is interested in Grace, and particularly in her wedding dress.
A book for the True "Princess Grace Wedding" afficionado!.......2007-07-01
I, for one, think that Grace Kelly was the epitome of the most beautiful, elegant brides of the modern edge...even to Princess Diana..that dress and the work that went into it is mindblowing. I've seen the dress in person and it TRULY is BREATHTAKINGLY stunning! The lace, alone, in this modern age (although no longer available) would be over $10K ALONE! I plan to copy some of Grace's elegance in my very own wedding...a Rose Point Lace garter, the beautiful Juliet Cap...all I can say is this: It's not a Grace Kelly Bio--this is strictly dedicated to the dress and it's making: fabrics and laces used and how they were all put together. Truly and informative book besides being a wonderful reference as well as a Keepsake. At LEAST 5 stars on this. Check it out..you won't be disappointed!
A Beautiful Depiction of Grace Kelly's Wedding Dress.......2006-10-08
This book gives a very detailed representation of Grace Kelly's Wedding Dress. It also gives lots of details of the events leading up to her wedding day. It is not a biography of her life. It focuses on her wedding day and the events leading up to it with the wedding day itself being the culmination.
Grace Kelly - Icon of Style.......2006-09-06
I was a bit disappointed when I received the book as I thought it would have more colored pictures of her wardrobe. Many were in black and white. The photos of her wedding dress were lovely though -- I guess that was the true focus of the book.
a good book about princess Grace wedding.......2006-07-05
i think this book does not give us a different view about Grace Kelly. It is only a book related to the wedding dress and some miscelaneous comentaries about her life. You can find some good photos about Grace, but nothing else. If you are a great Grace fan like me, perhaps you would like to buy next book about Grace : Grace Kelly, a life in pictures, by Pierre Henry Verlhac.

They Don't Make them like Her Anymore.......2005-08-05
Everyone remembers his first screen love.
Grace Kelly was mine, and I can still remember her clear Teutonic skin, lugubrious soft hair, her casual sophistication, all completely new fascinations to my mundane childhood. Years later, the only thing that's changed is I've grown older and she's still impossibly perfect.
What Robert Lacey has done in Grace is bring us all a little bit closer to that Snow Princess whom we all would have made our Princess were we a Prince. Behind the camera, behind bedroom doors, behind the veneer of an idyllic fairy tale that proves that fairy tales are exactly that, each anecdote is like a stitch in a grand painting that is sometimes bleak (Grace ages and somewhat pathetically begins to fool around with younger men), sometimes inspiring (her persistence at overcoming her natural dramatic flaws), and always sensual (her intimate fashion shows for her boyfriend Don Richardson).
Unlike many biographies of screen legends, Lacey largely eschews extended back lot stories that might involve but not support the basic image of Grace that he believes must be told. So while we learn High Noon's screenwriter Carl Foreman meant his film as an allegory about Communist witch hunts, we are spared a complete A-Z on the Hollywood Blacklist and its artistic implications. A great biography of a great person must not necessarily take on the great issues of his day. Of which Lacey understands.
Grace is a woman of terrific sexual energies and ambitions but just as importantly, sports a marvelous capacity to mask those penchants. So instead of becoming Jenna Jameson, she turns into Princess Grace, a woman who sleeps her way to the top but seems so inevitably suited for the position that no one can possibly begrudge her it.
As Lacey says "She managed to be naughty while appearing very nice."
It's become axiomatic that the greatest personalities are deeply contradictory. Nearly every biographer, when faced with the compelling weight of his research, is forced to concede that mankind is a very complex being (thank you, Mr. Stevenson). And Grace was no different. Lacey talks of Grace's growing conservatism, her disputes with her daughters over their flagrant ways, all while engaging in her own illicit love affairs as Princess Grace. And what of her devoted Catholicism? How to resolve her piety with her philandering?
Questions which can only be answered by Hitchcock's own. This is a snow covered volcano we're dealing with here.
And sometimes, you can't guess; you can only watch.
A real woman, but not "promiscous".......2005-06-05
The media reviewers quoted here harp on Grace Kelly's supposed "promiscous" behavior, the main point of the book, as far as they are concerned. Anyone who actually reads the book will find someone who had a few discreet affairs before she was married, who took her marriage vows and commitment to her family and role as princess seriously, who worked very hard throughout her life to meet her commitments, and who had a comforting relationship with a kind younger man when her marriage turned lonely as she got older. If she wasn't quite the cold, virginal image presented by Hollywood, good for her.
It's a very good book about a real woman of extraordinary beauty who could have settled for a society matron's life in Philadelphia but who made an extraordinary life for herself through her own efforts. Read it for that and not the sensationalism.
Amazing Grace.......2003-08-05
I picked up "Grace" about a year ago when I found it in my mom's old book closet. Although I am relatively young, something about the stars of yesteryear attracts me more than the glitz surrounding contemporary celebrities. Grace Kelly is no exception. I knew nothing about this icon, except that she was an American princess and a Hitchcockian heroine. Mr. Lacey certainly did his share in informing me about this classic movie star. I enjoyed how he provides us with immense background on the Kelly's, a prominent family in their own right. Mr. Lacey also does a fine job in giving us the "low-down" on Monaco and its interesting history.
Also of note would be the fact that Lacey attempts (and succeeds) at presenting the seemingly ethereal Grace as a person, not the sex symbol or ice queen she is usually remembered as. He does give a lot of insight into her love life and various affairs, but you never lose sight that Grace had this innocence about her. It seemed as if she could do no wrong.
Aside from being a talented actress, Grace was a true beauty and a dedicated mother and wife. She will always be remembered as our very own princess.
great book.......2002-01-05
This book has a great deal of detail. I feel as if there was too much emphasis on her sex life versus her screen image, and frankly that was her business, not important in the book. Otherwise a good book.
It Told Me Just What I Wanted to Know About Her.......2001-11-12
I wanted to know all about the men in Grace Kelley's life, both before and after her marriage. This book told me everything, but in a classy, well-researched way. I learned a lot about Monaco, and just the things I would have wanted to know about her family members, too. After reading this excellent book, I plan to read more of Robert Lacey's works.

Monte Carlo is more than a casino.......2001-08-02
The author has previously published works on Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret, and Countess Tolstoy -- but also on Judy Garland, Shirley Temple, Ronald Reagan, and P.T. Barnum, so the reader may be forgiven for unfounded suspicions of tabloidism. The second half of this workmanlike narrative does, in fact, concern itself mostly with the lively affairs of the current younger generation but the reader may ignore all that (or the reader may try).
For the first half details in sweeping prose the adventurous history of the Grimaldis, "an ambitious, hot-blooded, unscrupulous race, keen to plunder, swift to revenge, and furious in battle." The harbor at Monte Carlo has been strategically important since the Carthaginian fleet anchored there. The Lombards, Arabs, Guelfs, and Genoese all had their strongholds and the Grimaldi family arrived in 1162 as Genoese consuls. One night in 1297, Francesco Grimaldi (known as "the Spiteful") climbed the cliffs with his followers, disguised as monks, and overpowered the small garrison, and the family has ruled the Rock ever since. Edwards makes clear the necessary nerve and tenacity and the willingness to fight, as well as the diplomatic balancing act the princes of Monaco have had to perform in order to survive as a more or less independent state.
