Well... *that* sorta took all the fun out of it!.......2007-08-08
OK... I was wandering through the library aisles (really!), and this book sorta jumped out at me... The Science of Orgasm by Barry R. Komisaruk, Carlos Beyer-Flores, and Beverly Whipple. I thought it might be fun to learn a little more about what happens at that "YES!" moment. But this book really takes all the fun out of it. You pretty much have to have a medical degree to understand a majority of it, and there's little spractical material for the layman (pun not intended... much).

Anyway... this is an extremely clinical look at the physiological and psychological components that make up the, you guessed it, human orgasm. If you ever wanted to know exactly what role 5-alpha-DHT or dehydroepiandrosterone play in your body, this book will tell you... in detail. Probably every study on human sexuality in the past 50 years that's ever been published is referenced in here... multiple times. After a couple pages of explanation on evidence that a genital sensory pathway goes directly to the brain, bypassing the spinal cord, I was ready to switch over to something much lighter... like Reinventing Project Management. This was one of those library books that got renewed a number of times, as I just couldn't bear to read more than 10 to 15 pages at a time. Maybe I need a book on why I feel I have to finish a book if I start it. :)
Seriously, I can see how someone in the medical field would find this very useful. Also, if you're dealing with major issues like a spinal cord injury or severe reactions to medication, you'd probably be motivated to dig through the information to find answers and solutions. But for the average male or female with relatively normal functioning parts, this is written at a level that requires far more work than it's worth.
And now I think I'll go find something a bit more readable...
A Masterpiece In Its Field & Springboard for Future Studies.......2007-06-04
This book is technically challenging to wade through, and unless a person has a strong personal interest in the subject matter, or is doing a college level research paper, be aware it is difficult reading. I expected the 'psychology' of orgasm and a better understanding of the relationship between men and women but this book is almost exclusively about the purely physical mechanisms of desire, arousal and orgasm; in other words, the nuts and bolts of how it actually happens. It is like reading a car manual when the reader may be expecting a driver's guide.
Every paragraph, and many times every sentence, is loaded with parenthetical citations to other books, authors and researchers, and/or definitions of the medical terms for physiological body parts and functions, which admittedly are necessary considering it is a scientifically technical assessment of orgasm; however, it seriously impedes the natural flow of the steps in acquiring a new thought, assimilating that thought into one's schema, and retaining the new information into the subsequent overall emergent pattern that the authors are striving to bring to a point. This is not the authors' fault however, but rather the current style for citation as opposed to an earlier style of footnotes which in my opinion is preferable because it leaves to the reader whether to make use of the extended information in the footnote or to have an unimpeded reading experience.
I can imagine that those readers familiar with physiologically technical terms and/or whose discipline or field of study this is will also find it laborious to suffer through the multitude of parenthetical definitions for the benefit of those of us unfamiliar with the advanced medical terminology used throughout the book.
On a positive note, it probably brings together into one source every piece of important data on the physiology of orgasm from a medical perspective accumulated over time in many other venues such as books, studies, and research papers submitted to medical magazines and conferences, and it is no doubt an invaluable tool for the library of a professional who deals with the phenomenon of orgasm in the human species.
The reasons for my interest being subjective rather than academic, I was disappointed initially in the strict adherence to professional jargon employed by the authors to lend scholarly credibility to their work, and to the prevalence of the purely physiological aspects of orgasm; however, I did glean a few gems of personal interest hidden in the profuse amount of detail.
One such piece of data reveals women in general can have many motives other than orgasm for engaging in sex with their partner, while men are linear in their efforts to satisfy their drive with defined steps of desire, arousal, and orgasm following a standard pattern with an intentional ultimate end result. My conclusions after completing this book are that there is now a scientific basis for the paradigm and age old belief that "men give affection to get sex and women give sex to get affection" in the vast majority of women. I am hopeful that there will now be a new round of psychological studies to find other common traits in those women who have a more linear purpose for engaging in sex, and in the majority of women who do not. For example, there are some insights in one chapter of the book about natural herbs that stimulate desire, arousal, and orgasm in humans that have been confirmed by studies, so it would be interesting for future studies to investigate whether those in the minority have taken these herbal remedies over time. I for one have been a health nut since my teenage years and one of my daily regimen is Gingko Biloba, one of the herbs sited in the book, as well as ginseng among others, as having been conclusively found by studies to increase desire, arousal, orgasm, and overall sexual satisfaction.
The book cited many studies dealing with various physical impacts on orgasm but nothing on how light affects the positive or negative aspects of the human sexual response. I would be very interested in future studies about light's effects (as in our solar spectrum) on orgasm, and in particular how exposure to specific colors in light affect sensuality. I have slept with a blue light in my bedroom for over thirty years since I was twenty-nine. I believe this has had an anti aging effect on me as well, since I look, act, and feel much younger than I am. The Universal Mind that channels through me has many dictums on light therapy and the nutritional value of different colors. Over the last decade there have been many discoveries about light and its effects on us which have validated information I have been channeling and documenting for years; it would be fascinating for future studies to determine what effects light, and the individual colors in light, might have on the complex biological process leading to orgasm and the human sexual response.
In one of a few rare excursions away from the 'physical' into the 'psychological' regarding women and their ability to reach climax, studies are cited in the book that reveal women need to be given "permission" to enjoy sex. I believe this is probably more of a cultural problem in America than in other areas of the world because our societal moors have deleterious psychological effects on the physiological process of orgasm. In my opinion, Americans have an aberrant negative fascination with sex as reflected by pornographic demand, a staggering divorce rate and a huge incidence of violent crimes against women such as rape and domestic violence, and Americans are among the most depressed and unhappy culture of people on earth. God does not, and never did, intend this negative perspective about sex. When the Angel told Sarah she would have a son, her immediate response was to ask if she was to have pleasure in her old age, and instead of going in the tent to start knitting a pair of baby booties, she went in and started getting dolled up for Abraham. Women - and men - need to understand that sex is a healthy, natural phenomenon and is to be enjoyed in a monogamous relationship only to prevent the negative side effects of promiscuity, not because sex in itself is wrong. It does beg the question of why women are physically hot wired to experience orgasm if they were not meant to do so joyfully since orgasm is not a requisite for becoming pregnant.
If one is more interested in the psychological and social aspects of sex, there are probably better choices than this book which deals with the brain's relationship to orgasm in a purely physiological way and not much in terms of psychological behavioral factors. It is definitely not a 'how to get it more and do it better' type of book, although the effects of drugs, both legal and illegal, on achieving an orgasmic response is discussed, as well as the aforementioned herbs, but again in a medical application and not a social application.
The single most surprising statement in the book for me was that a few women have reported the ability to have orgasm just by thinking about it and without genital stimulation, for which the authors cited their own study in 1992. I would have been interested in other common traits among those women, but that too would have taken the authors outside this book's scope of the purely physiological aspects of orgasm, its processes, and the positive and negative effects of various environmental factors on desire, arousal, and orgasm such as illness, drugs, and disabilities. I hope future studies will look at what traits those who fall within a particular set of parameters have in common, such as right brain expressions like art, writing, and music, or, like myself for which creativity is but a hobby while my functional daily life is more left brain both receptively and expressively. I am looking forward to many new studies utilizing the science in this book.
I'm glad I did finish the book because the last segment of the last chapter was of utmost surprise and fascination for me in which the authors acknowledged nobody knows exactly where orgasm originates, and they speculate it may be in a fifth dimension which they also attribute to possibly being the home of consciousness! They offer the information that many physicists are comfortable with there being as many as ten dimensions. Most people differentiate between the four dimensions we are aware of as 'science' and all other dimensions as 'faith'. This is the first time I have read of a group of people that are swayed by 'science' alluding to something that lends credibility to what I have been channeling for fifteen years. A very exciting "find" for me.
The book is fascinating, albeit difficult to read, and I learned a lot about both women and men that I did not know. I expect this book to be a cornerstone in future knowledge and enlightenment through studies on this subject. I have no doubt it will be a masterpiece in its field.

The Science of Sex Hasn't Yet... Peaked .......2007-04-27
So many people and organizations over-emphasize sex for their own agendas, while for others sex is a source of unhappiness and guilt. But the fact is that for most people a balanced sex life is an essential part of healthy living. Yet despite the deluge of information about sex, it is amazing how much ignorance still exists. Most people working in psychology will have seen people who were convinced that they had an illness because he or she had failed to have an orgasm or had sometimes been less interested in sex.
This is the kind of book that will probably get thumbed through a lot at the local lending library, but it is not in any way a "how to" book. It is instead a scholarly work on what is known about orgasm. It is a book of facts and figures, a few diagrams and a lot of scientific references.
I have some minor gripes: the proofing could have been better: bromocriptine is one of a number of words that is misspelled. There is only a short discussion about why female orgasm exists at all. The male orgasm seems to have a straightforward evolutionary function, making males want to have sex more often, which in turn makes them more likely to have offspring. But how to account for female orgasm, when nearly three-quarters of women don't always reach orgasm during sexual intercourse? If the female orgasm had developed because of the same evolutionary pressures, females should have adapted to be as consistently orgasmic as males. (There is an excellent discussion of this issue in the recent book by Elisabeth Lloyd from Indiana University, which is referenced in this book). At some points in this book there is not enough of a distinction made between orgasm and arousal. For instance some women report that arousal rather than orgasm is what drives them to enjoy sex. There is also an over-emphasis on biochemical theories of orgasm, and an under-emphasis on the psychological, subtle and spiritual aspects. Even the topic of consciousness and orgasm gets only a brief chapter.
If you are interested in a more comprehensive view of orgasm, you may want to supplement this book with the works of David Deida, Jenny Wade, Mabel Iam and Mantak Chia.
But all that being said, this is the best single book on the physiology, biochemistry and pathology of orgasm. It also highlights that there is still a great deal that is known.
The book also gives quite a good summary of some of the approaches that may help people who feel that they have a problem with achieving orgasm. It is essential reading for anyone working with relationship problems. And if the only thing that comes from this book is a greater understanding that orgasm is not the only consideration in intimate relationships, that would be worthwhile in itself.
This book is almost unique, and apart from the points that I have raised, I recommend it to anyone who needs a reliable account of the physical aspects of orgasm, and suggestions for helping with problems.

I'm a real beginner, and this is a great help in putting my little bit of knowledge in context. I have to cover the facing (English) page because my eyes tend to wander, but that's easy. I look up a lot of words. If I look up enough, maybe I'll know Spanish by the end of the book.

This book is inexpensive, has an intersting assortment of parables, proverbs and short-stories, and is graded to get progressively more difficult as you read it.
For what it's supposed to be, I think it's an excellent choice.
My only reservation is that it was originally published in 1964. In my experience studying Japanese, I know that language can go through many changes through the decades, so I'm just curious if the language is "current" or a bit "dated."
I wouldn't hesitate to purchase it, though. At the price it's definitely worth it.

I love the little folk tales in this book! Its a fantastic book for Spanish review and practice. Very easy to check yourself and translate vocabulary because of the accurate English translations. There are comprehension questions in Spanish at the end, as well as English "story starters' to practice your English to Spanish translation.

Food Not Lawns speaks to my heart and has inspired me in my home gardening. I bought copies for two dear gardening friends who are in their 20's and 30's, and they are also excited by the ideas presented in the book. The author takes a holistic view of community and gardening, of working with Nature as an orchestra of forces influencing each other and working collectively together. Heather Flores encourages us to think out of the box and some might find that uncomfortable, but I still think her vision and sense of hope is so needed in our world today. Share this book with family and friends!

I see that this books appears a hit with many reviewers, but I am unfortunately going to dissent. I was excited to read this book when it arrived and was subsequently dissappointed in the overall quality of the work as a whole. First and foremost, Flores leaves out a great deal of detail with regard to the actual work involved in any form of agriculture, be it animal husbandry, permaculture, or anything between. I say this not only as an avid reader, but also an environmental studies major reviewing the work for a class as well. Second, Flores' method of combining the topics of agriculture and social change is facetious at best, with no real segway from the former to the latter. In other words, this is literally two unconnected books sharing the same binding. Finally, and most disheartening of all, the work gives faulty advice at best, especially with regard to her advice on dealing with numerous aspects of gardening (traditional and permaculture), pending jail time, and conflict management strategies(with latter are potentially dangerous). I will also note that I resold this book immediately upon completion due to the above. Those interested would be better served to read The Good Life by Helen and Scott Nearing, or other such related books by other reputable authors such as Joseph Jenkins, Eliot Coleman, Louise Riotte, or John and Martha Storey. In short, do not purchase this book if you are serious about either agriculture or social change.

This is a very shallow book by the new generation of writers that find fault with everything done in the twenty years before they were born,
Its very shallow, big type and very preachy.
If you are interested in gardening, try Giaas garden, a much more serious study of permiculture.
In this rambling book, the aurthor boasts of not making over 8 k a year, but inherited the money to buy her farm!
I liked camping living until I was thirty, now I am 45 and really like my freezer and new stove.( yes, I have my own three hens and belong to a CSA)
I know a number of the original flower/farm people, and as they got older they liked having a few more comforts.
So this is one of the new gen X books, shallow to a fault. Nothing but sound bites.
the aurthor sems all hyped about third world living, but I am not sure she has ever been to a third world and seen how hard that style of life is,,it is easy to glamorius the distant!!!
Not just Gardening--A guide to Activism and Environmentalism.......2007-01-23
I picked up this book to learn practical application of permacultural principles applied to urban yard scales--and there is a wealth of such information here. However, I do feel like Flores preaches just a little too much about the environmental destruction and political problems currently plaguing our country. In my view, anyone picking up a book called Food Not Lawns probably is already well-versed in such issues, and Flores is essentially preaching to the converted. That said, this book DOES have tons of practical information, and I would recommend it as an excellent counterbalance and companion book to Toby Hemenway's Gaia's Garden.

What are We to Make of Computers, and Computers Make of Us.......2002-04-20
Winograd and Flores' `Understanding Computers and Cognition' proposes that the rationalist tradition in AI must be replaced by a hermeneutic approach. Associating the rationalist tradition with the goal of building a human mind, the authors propose that a hermeneutic approach must adopt the goal of constructing prostheses which magnify the human mind. This paper argues that what AI needs is not so much a hermeneutic approach as a better appreciation of biology and psychology. Understanding Computers and Cognition is a groundbreaking book that presents an important new approach to understanding what computers do and how their functioning is related to human language, thought and action. Not Just Another Pretty Face.......2001-07-24
A few years ago Byte Magazine named this one of the 10 most important books in the history of the computer industry. Flores was asked to keynote the 50th anniversary meeting of the ACM on the strength of the work he has done, some of which is shown here.
I am a little surprised not to find a review here that shows awareness of what this book is and was intended to do -- to turn those concerned with the design of the role of computers in society into a new direction. The book offers a fundamental enrichment and extension to the traditional engineering-based foundations that are used for designing computer systems that is drawn from philosophy and biology. It opens the development of a rigorous new design milleau to the reader. This is NOT yet another multi-disciplinary rumination.
I would say this is not a "helpful" book, and it was never intended as an easy read. It is a book to turn to when one has learned enough about what is really at issue in putting computers to work in human life to discover that the likes of input, process, output, "friendly" interfaces, attractive graphical presentations, and logical flow charts are vastly insufficient distinctions for doing work that really makes a contribution to your clients and colleagues. The book challenges the reader strongly, and is not simple to read. I guess that the best way to read it is with someone else, having discussions as you go along.
This is a book to engage and grow with -- a must-read for those serious about designing and building systems that will affect the lives of those who engage with them.
A little disappointed.......2000-03-24
I read the 1986 or 87 version of this book and am of a software/AI background. I didn't follow the biological material that well - either I was being dense or it just wasn't clearly written. I thought the book was repetitious (my chief complaint). Some of the concepts discussed include: "breakdown" (humans become aware of thing X only when something goes awry in which the X is involved), "thrownness" (humans don't rationally consider all possibilities and make perfect decisions because situations they are put in don't permit such cognition and/or we simply we aren't capable of it), "blindness" (we are always somewhat blind to the prejudicies/assumptions that guide our thinking...and we can't totally escape this predicament. Also discusses the co-routine effect (per the software world) of human affects environment and environment affects world circularity.
Illuminates the concept of a user-system system.......1999-03-31
The authors' theme is that we each react to and are changed by our environment which in turn reacts to and is changed by each of us. In the end, one can design computers only within a particular consensual domain that entails at least some commonly understood rules and concepts. The authors rely heavily on the philosophical works of Maturana and Heidegger. Difficult to read as some word meanings are developed through usage and demonstration (e.g., "throwness"). Also, quotes from references are used endlessly to substantiate their theme. This is nice but I wonder after all is done, what contributions the authors' have made and how much is simply a rehash.
Biological dependencies for cognition.......1997-11-14
This is an excellent text which describes an approach to using computers to perform an enabling role within corporate enterprises by using their ability to allow clearer understanding between participants in the workplace. The other aspect of this book looks at current methods of creating AI systems and their fundamental weaknesses. Having read this as part of my MSc. in Information Technology I have re-read it several times and I would recommend it to all those involved in complex system design, implementation and support. In addition a book such as Checklands Soft Systems Methodolgy will give a good introduction to how the systems described in Understanding Computers and Cognition can be designed to meet the demands of "real world" environments.

The Epitome of What is Wrong in Math Education.......2006-07-21
Math books in Japan and Singapore are short, inexpensive, and to the point. Math books in American often look like this monstrocity: long, expensive and rambling. For example we learn about the history of jeans, we learn that Mae Jemison was the first African-American woman to go into space, and that in 1974, Beverly Johnson, the first black model on the cover of a major fashion magazine. In other words, this book tries very hard to hide the fact that is math book by introducing glossy photos, color pictures, and a litany facts TOTALLY UNRELATED TO MATH. Unfortunately, the students will eventually find out this is a math textbook, so introducing all of that fluff is a wasted effort.
In looking through this book, I would say about 65% of it can be jettisoned, leaving 35% of the book that actually deals with math in a direct and useful way. However, you really have to wade through a lot of nonsense to find that stuff.
Avoid this book. Period.
Perhaps the worst Math Book ever "Written".......2006-06-20
In my home state of Tennessee, this is the text that unsuspecting school kids must decipher. It should have been easy - it's structure (and I use the term loosely) broadly resembles MTV with its numerous subjects per page, chats about unrelated subjects, some of the worst use of the English language ever and a colorful, multi-font, in-your-face appearance. There's pictures and graphs and arrows and charts and big text and small text and cartoons...Yet it cannot be understood much less absorbed - at least by anyone looking for something rational.
Like others, I noticed that the "team" of writers (it's almost as if they took turns writing paragraphs) continually introduced material BEFORE it was studied. Then there were the "examples" - just pitiful. Proofs were confusing, redundancy is taken for granted and the number of sub-subjects - review, standardized tests, chapter study, real life example, etc all ran together in a mushy mixture of words and concepts. IF YOUR CHILD MUST USE THIS BOOK GET EITHER A TUTOR OR PURCHASE "Geometry the Easy Way" by Lawrence S. Leff. I picked it up for $2.99 from Amazon.
A one star is overly generous.
Absolutely Horrid! Avoid like the plague!.......2006-02-28
I am taking an honors level geometry course at my high school, and this, unfortunately, is the text that we have been given. It's absolutely rubbish. The lessons don't really teach the concepts, they just show some examples, which are hard to comprehend without actually knowing the topic that they're trying to teach/demonstrate/show-off/whatever. Furthermore, the problems at the end of the lessons/chapters clearly assume knowledge beyond the scope of what was taught in the book (leaving holes for the teacher to fill in, I suppose). This book is bad, really bad, and I cannot stress this point enough.
I'd reccomend "Geometry the Easy Way" by Lawrence S. Leff, if you truly want to learn the topic (it covers everything that this joke of a text covers...only in more depth). Oh, and it's only $10 or so.
Also, avoid the Algebra II textbook by these clowns, it's written in the same bad style, poorly teaching the lessons. In general, Glencoe products are of the lowest quality. I'm studying calculus independently, and I'm sure glad that Glencoe doesn't produce a calculus text (otherwise the school may have given me that).
Utterly Confusing for Middleschoolers.......2005-10-15
I was recently amazed when my daughter, who has been a strait A math student, showed me this textbook along with a poor grade in her first quarter taught with this book. I am an electrical engineer with math minor who greatly enjoys math applications in engineering.
I've read through many chapters of this book in utter confusion. There are so many applications and examples, it's hard to find the math concepts, particularly in the early introductory chapters. Chapter one of this book, used to teach 8th graders in our school district, reads like a textbook on vector calculus. The discussion changes between 1,2, and 3 space without any discussion or any definitions. Almost any 1960's geometry textbook would be far superior.
In reading later chapters, it seems to cover boolean logic, logic theory, matrices, then returns to geometry. The trigonometry sections are fairly good. Towards the end, a more standard approach is taken towards solid geometry. The homeworks are very confusing, and relate to materials not in the chapters.
This book has just too much confusing stuff for middleschoolers. I'm sure that it's well intended, but completely misses the mark. It fails to teach geometry. Chock full of applications, especially in the early part of the book, it's missing the fundamental ideas of geometry. It's also very weak on analytical geometry, the most important ideas in engineering.
This textbook was a poor choice in our school district. The latter chapters are almost college level in complexity. I'm sure that the egos of the authors were well massaged in coauthoring this. However, the students are left without a useful textbook that they can understand or learn math from. If making students thoroughly confused and feeling inadeqate is a new concept in education, then this book is great. No wonder students can't pass the Aims test.
Geometry: Misconnections.......2003-08-25
This is a very poor math textbook. Here's the main problem: End-of-chapter problem sets require knowledge and skills that have not been clearly introduced in the chapter. Chapters meander through irrelevant or mundane points (e.g., how to bisect an angle using a compass...this is middle school stuff) but then call on different skills in problem sets (e.g., where was this postulate discussed in the chapter?). If you are looking for a good geometry book, I suggest that you look elsewhere. Unfortunately, our school district didn't.

Excellent resource.......2007-02-20
I am really enjoying this book. It has a great premise of the lack of attachment as one of the causes of addiction and reasons for relapse. I would suggest this for anyone in the health care field of addiction or those dealing with it in friends and family.

Road Map for a Service-Centric IT.......2007-04-24
The authors claim that in a service-centric world, it is increasingly meaningless to try to separate software from services; that IT Technology is an increasingly commoditized market, as commoditized as electric utilities; and finally, that nobody in normal circumstances builds in-house utility capabilities to leverage differentiation and competitiveness.
In this scenario, CIOs are facing pressure from inside and from outside their organizations . Inside pressures come from cost management and service management; both often perceived as complex cul de sacs. Outside pressures come from an increasingly mature On Demand Services , well established outsourcing markets, or common supply chain strategies. Regulatory demands and other factors will maintain the need for in-house IT requirement for a while.
However, CIOs and IT organizations with better chances to do something relevant and, above all, with chances to bridge with the business future, will be organizations that succeed in understanding IT as business' portfolio services.
This situation defines spaces of opportunities for IT organizations: first, to become aware of the topology of the space that is opening in the industry and the role Service Catalogs may play in solving the "how-to"; and second, to expand the collaboration of the IT community to develop a Service Design discipline able to project many interesting initiatives already being developed.
This book is a simple and robust approach to move IT in the service direction.

If you're at all interested in Latin American culture you'll love this book and he's an amazing person. He'll tal kto you forever about the subject and he's highly intelligent.
A five rating, but with a footnote........2000-12-13
While Juan Flores is perceptive in his discussion of the Puerto Rican component of Latino culture, and discusses other major critics like Perez Firmat and Stavans, I was frankly surprised not to see any discussion of William Luis's Dance Between Two Cultures: Latino Caribbean Literature Written in the United States, which in my estimation is as important as those written by the critics Flores discusses. The value of Luis's study is that he addresses the same Puerto Rican community mentioned in Flores' book, but Luis also contextualizes this community by considering its relation to the Cuban and Dominican components of Latino culture. Anyone interested in understanding Latino literature and culture should also read Dance Between Two Cultures, which contains perceptive readings of Latino Caribbean literature unavailable in any other study.
Not just for Puerto Ricans............2000-10-28
The title of Mr. Flores' book might be a little deceiving for those who are not familiar with the subject matter. Mr. Flores uses music as a jumping off point for some very thought provoking themes that pertain (in my opinion) to all Latino's. Juan Flores goes from scholarly themes like colonialism to thoughts on the funeral of Cortijo and the history of the Boogaloo phenomena in New York City.
Mr. Flores makes you stop and think, then think again about issues you may have had preconceived notions about. I really enjoyed being challenged intellectually as I read this book.
I recently attended a lecture/performance (at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City) of "From Bomba to Hip-Hop" conducted by Mr. Flores, music historian Rene Lopez and Mike Wallace (who won a Pulitzer Prize for his book, "Gotham.") True to form, it was a very unique, educational and entertaining experience.
A book that needs to be a major part of contemporary America.......2000-09-24
As a beginning graduate student in Latina/o Studies, I have been asking myself a simple question over and over: "Where have I been?" I have gone through public education in the United States for 17 years of my life, and have only recently found that there have been people writing since the start of the 1900s about the issues, experiences, struggles, and passions that I have thought were uniquely mine. Piri Thomas published _Down These Mean Streets_ in 1967. I just read it this past summer, my mother--right after I gave it to her. And the thought that has wondered in is, "why wasn't I told about his book earlier?" Is Piri Thomas' experience, a bond with African American culture that Juan Flores addresses in his book, such a marginal experience in American life, that it took a suggestion by Amazon.com for a man with 4 years of university education to be aware of the book? As the population of Latino/as in the United States grows to the levels of being the largest minority group in the country, there will have to be a shifting of Latina/o literature, theory, and any cultural products from the margins of American life to the center contemporary discussion. It is these products that Juan Flores probes and analyses with keen insight that places the Puerto Rican aspect of the Latino experience into mainstream intellectual thought. From "the Madonna incident" in Puerto Rico, to the ties that Puerto Ricans have with Hip-Hop, and the current status of Puerto Rico that he sadly calls a "Lite Colony," Flores' book is one that should be read by anyone interested in the affairs of American culture.

I have used this for 3 years in teaching my group class in alcohol and drug abuse studies. This book integrates Yalom, 12 step, counseling skills, discussion on pathologies and nuts and bolts of doing groups extremely well. It is an interesting and informative read. I highly recommend it for anyone doing groups, especially in the addictions field. I wish there were a 3rd edition coming out!!!!!!
