In a wise and witty manner, brothers David and Tom Gardner, founders of the multimedia investment company The Motley Fool, impart their investment strategies to the adolescent masses with The Motley Fool Investment Guide for Teens. In eight teen-friendly sections, the brothers Gardner and writing partner Selena Maranjian demystify the stock market by describing and defining mutual funds, banking practices, IRAs, and drip investing. The authors also include numerous quotes from money-savvy adolescents who detail some of their rookie market moves in an attempt to help their peers steer clear of similar mistakes. Parents will approve of the strongly worded sections on credit card debt and the costly financial and physical tolls a smoking habit takes on both wallet and health. In fact, parents would do well to pick up this investment primer for their own edification, if they find the stock market a confusing and chaotic business. Loaded with worksheets, helpful Web sites on a variety of financial subjects, a concise glossary, and a comprehensive index, this is one investment guide that both generations can and will turn to again and again.
Traditionally, teens have been known for having a hard time seeing the proverbial Big Picture. But the Gardners respond admirably to this characteristic, by constantly emphasizing the fortune teens can make in the future by investing now and reminding them that investing money is the least labor-intensive way to make more of the desirable green stuff. A perfect gift for the burgeoning Warren Buffet in your life. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

Good Book For All Ages.......2007-02-14
This book has reinforced what I have been preaching to my 17 year old for years......1) save and invest your money early, 2)live within your means as you get started in life (used vs new car), 3) attend the local university (keep student loans to minimum) and 4) practice a healthy lifestyle and you will soon learn that by the time you are 30 you will have more financial freedom and less debt than 90% of Americans.
I wish I had been taught the discipline for the first two items as it wasn't until age 40 that I reached financial freedom. Fortunately for him, he is a believer after reading this book. Maybe along the way he will guide others in the right direction.
The Best Way to Enjoy Finance & Economics.......2006-02-27
This books gives the true value of savings: a life worth dreamings about and investments we make for it to see it happen. This is a sweet and funny little book that makes money look exciting as a tool and token. I see this book as the clues to playing a cool video game. (More, like the hint book.) It's so casual that you think your reading Reader's Digest. You never feel confused! Math teacher's, parents, middle schoolers, high school students, college students, retirees: you'll love this book.
Yes, a good money book for teens, but the voice is annoying........2005-05-03
This book will basically focus on the way the stock market works and how to invest in it. It also tells you how much you can save in the future. It is the meat of the book when it comes to the stock market, but the book will also teach you the cost of bad habits such as smoking and the upsides of credit cards if used right. The book teaches you how to get your money's worth in the bank, teaching you everything from how they make money to what a cd is. The worst thing about this book that annoyed me so much, I took off a point, was that they try to write the book in a type of slang format. Going from saying the word dawg and writing rock lyrics about the book. This is very annoying, but the tips this book gives are just too valuble to detour you alway.
I recommend it to anyone of any age.
Great intro financial / investing book for **everyone**.......2005-02-08
I only skimmed this book (after all, I own almost all the other TMF books!), but I think this book is by far one of the best financial books for **any** new investor, regardless of age. While other books may have more content, this is one of the most approachable financial and investing books I've read. (Plus, its worksheets **force** you practice what you read!) Readable by adults, too!
This book is the beginning of your future.......2005-01-24
I am in college. I guess I got this information kind of late. I actually started my first job way later than other kids.
I think this book inspired me to save and invest in my future. I did not know a freaking thing about investing till this came along. The thing I found most suprising was that you don't need any knowlege of the stock market to come out ahead. They make it so simple...and its life changing. I recommend this book if you want to be able to survive comfortabley when your retired.
Start saving and investing now! buy the book.

Bat House Builder's Handbook.......2007-04-05
My grand daughter's are anxious to get started building! I bought this and the Stokes Guide to Bats. They love the books. Easy to use and with a little help 8 & 10 years-old understand the blueprints.
This Guide Is Worth Buying.......2007-03-14
I was a bit annoyed to open the package from Amazon and see this glorified pamphlet inside. "There goes ten bucks!" I thought. Don't let the size fool you, though. When I opened the booklet and started flipping through, I saw that it really is an excellent guide. It is far superior to anything else I have seen on the subject. I have seen bat houses for sale in my area that do not come close to meeting the well researched guidelines described in this book. Worth buying, definitely. I just wanted to combat the mosquitos in my neighborhood -- now I will likely join the Bat Conservancy and build houses for any friends who ask.
Bat House Builder's Book.......2006-11-06
Lots of good information in here. This book went into detail that I'd never even thought about. Definitely worth a buy if you want a good house that will attract bats.
Good houses, could use variety.......2004-09-28
Maybe I'm too sold on what's marketed as variety.
I agree with what other reviewers have said, that these are good bathouses and the instructions are easy to follow. I just wish there were a little more variety in terms of design.
The book, by the way, over and above the houses does have some reference information on bats including where to put the houses. That was helpful.
If you're into bats, and would like to make your own houses, this is the book I would recommend.
great tool for any bathouse builder.......2004-03-08
This is a very concise and thorough book on how to construct a successful bat house.

Loved the book..........2004-01-26
I very much enjoyed this book and found it an easy read along with some very nice pictures of Selena, her friends and family.
Her short time with us is a true tragedy, and for someone so young, so talented, and so beautiful both in body and sole.
FABULOUS AND MOVING! GREATGIFT! SELENA LIVES HERE!.......2002-11-13
THIS IS THE BEST BOOK ABOUT SELENA IN THE MARKET--I AM A FAN, AND I KNOW. THE STORY WAS SO MOVING, SO SAD AND ALSO SO HOPEFUL. I LEARNED MANY THINGS ABOUT SELENA THAT WERE NEVER PRINTED IN THE MAGAZINES OR NEWSPAPERS, AND NOW I UNDERSTAND HER LIFE MUCH MORE--AND EVEN THE TRAGIC LIFE OF HER MISGUIDED [murderer]. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK! I'M GIVING IT FOR CHRISTMAS TO ALL MY FRIENDS!
lost me at the end.......2002-08-03
When I first picked up this book I thought it was great! I love Selena, but when I got to the end and saw pictures of her in her coffin I was really put off. Maybe it is just a personal preference but I disagreed with the inclusion of such a private thing.
beautifully written.......2001-12-17
The author of this book clearly spent a lot of time researching because the information was very detailed and accurate from the research I've acquired on Selena. The photos are beautiful too. I'd highly recommend this!!
A must to have to all Selena fans!.......2001-11-08
This book is written so well. The book goes through Selena`s life and career. And it of course includes inside informations and pictures about Selena and her dear and loving husband Chris.I wish there`ll be more information and pictures about the life of the two lovebirds.Because despite the ugly and mean rumours about Selena and Chris ,i truly and deeply believe that they were very happy together and very much in love. They were planning their future very seriously,a new house and kids. She wanted to have 5 kids.
There are also very sad pictures of her funeral and her coffin. The pictures make you feel very sad and frustrated.I mean the big question in my mind was and is, WHY? Why she has to die? What was the meaning of this?
But i really think that this book is very useful and brilliant to all Selena fans out there. The pictures of the book are generally awesome and great!
Customer Reviews:
I cannot believe someone would do this!!!.......2005-08-18
I have never read this book but by the things people are saying about it , like the fact that she would leave her husband for a surgeon, its proposturous!!! I am a HUGE Selena fan since I was 4 years old and I know for a fact I know more than this loon. I practicly studied about Selena since I became obsessed with her and I'm telling everybody right now that some of these things are 100% not true. So I would say if you want to know the truth about the wonderful Mexican-American Tejano singer, than I would suggest not wasting your money on such a book. You will never know the truth about her by reading lies. ( I hope everyone reading this believes me and doesnt waste their money!!)
Arraras knows the "secret" and you don't.......2002-08-26
I read this in the English version. Arraras begins with an intro that states "she knows Selena's secret" and ends by explaining that, since Yolanda Saldivar told her the "secret" off the record, Arraras cannot reveal it. She says the reader needs to read between the lines to discover aspects of the secret that have since become public knowledge and were therefore OK for her to include in her book.
I'm not a big Selena fan and this account seemed balanced for the most part-- but I can see that serious fans would be upset because Arraras insists on treating Yolanda and the Saldivar family with "respect"-- she allows them their say. Although Arraras admits that Yolanda is manipulative, evasive and less than honest, Arraras seems to let this pass, avoiding confrontation in order to preserve her exclusive relationship with Yolanda and the Saldivars.
SPOILER: For what it's worth, the secret apparently was that Selena may have been planning to leave her husband, may have been romantically involved with a plastic surgeon in Mexico, may have been planning to take up residence in Mexico and open a clothing factory there, pursuing a career in the fashion industry against her father's wishes.
THIS IS THE WORST BOOK IVE EVER READ AND THE AUTHOR ..........2002-07-15
THE ONLY GOOD THING ABOUT THIS BOOK WAS GETTING IT FINISHED AND THE SELENA PICS, TO BAD I DIDN'T HAVE A FIRE PLACE SO I COULD THROUGH IT IN I WAS A SELENA FAN FOR A YEAR WHEN I BOUGHT THE BOOK AND I DIDN'T BELIEVE ONE LIE ABOUT HER AND IF SOMEONE ACUTELY THINK THIS BOOK WAS GOOD IS NOT A REAL SELENA FAN THIS BOOK IS NOTHING BUT ... AND BELONGS IN THE TRASH, THE TRASH CAN IS EVEN TO GOOD FOR THIS BOOK IT BELONGS IN A FIRE PLACE WHERE IT CAN DISAPPEAR FOR EVER, ALL THE AUTHOR CARED ABOUT WAS THE MONEY, I COULD WRITE A BETTER BOOK ABOUT SELENA WITH THE TRUTH, WRITING A BOOK ABOUT SELENA ISN'T ABOUT THE MONEY ITS ABOUT GETTING THE TRUTH OUT ABOUT WHAT REALLY HAPPENED AND WHO SHE REALLY WAS AND ITS ALSO ABOUT LETTING HER NEWER FANS KNOW MORE ABOUT HER AND LETTING PEOPLE SEE THE COOL OUTFITS, POSES AND CONCERT PICS THAT SHE DID, SO DON'T BUY ITS NOT WORTH THE MONEY OUR THE TIME
Pure Speculation!.......2002-03-29
This book is called Selena's Secret. You won't find out anything secret about Selena in this book. The author spends most of the book patting herself on the back for the objectivity she used when reporting Yolanda Saldivar's trial. She keeps hinting that there is this big secret about Selena to share when in the end nothing is revealed. If you want a more accurate book on Selena's life, check out Como La Flor by Joe Nick Patoski because all you get in "Secret" is a bunch of gossip.
Excellent Expose on the Slain Tejano Superstar.......2000-12-08
Well-researched, yet a bit long at times, "El Secreto de Selena" ("Selena's Secret"), is an interesting thought-provoking expose on the reasons that led to the singer's death by her fan club manager. Puerto Rican news anchor, Maria Celeste Arraras, who is one of the most respected women in her field, decided to write this book based on interviews with several people, most importantly Yolanda Saldivar, Selena's murderer.
First of all, let's clear things. Selena wasn't a saint, nor am I. To reach sainthood you have to have perform miracles and go through a process. With the media's power influence, Selena's "canonization" was unnecessary in many ways. Arraras' book, which begins with her discovering about Selena's death at the studios where she films her television show, "Primer Impacto" and moves on to her heading to Corpus Christi, Texas to cover her funeral and the media frenzy that followed is well-written in every sense of the word. Arraras continues with her campaign to punish shock jock Howard Stern for his spoof of Selena's final moments (a chapter that I found unnecessary) and her later investigation of Selena's final days.
There are many questions that are answered in this book: Why was Selena spending so much time with her plastic surgeon in Mexico? Why did the Quintanilla family did not disclose the Selena had been to a clothing factory with her "male friend" so many times within a few months (a fact proven by official Mexican documents)? Where was Selena's husband and what was the status of their marriage? Why did Selena choose Mexico to be the production country where her clothing line would be produced?
Arraras' book answers all these questions and more. The book makes you ponder about many things, especially the belief that Saldivar was an "obsessed lesbian" in love with Selena? After reading this book I came to think that being the only book on the market about the hidden truths that led to Selena's death, why didn't the Quintanilla family sue Arraras for slander? Why to this date they haven't sue Arraras only tells that the author did her homework in an un-biased manner, and she didn't succumb to the mob mentality that ruled Corpus Christi during Saldivar's trial. While I feel that Saldivar is guilty as sin, the other players in this book have remained out of the public spotlight ever since its' publication. Why? Read this book, analyze the facts and separate them from the fiction, and then you'll discover "Selena's Secret."
One of the best expose books I have read in years. Highly recommended!

The Guide question and answers runs from very basic money questions to more advanced ones and often gives references on the web where you can find more insight. You won't get bored reading this foolish tome either. Its has some wit and a little humor to it too keep it lively.
Don't be foolish, get this book and answer almost all of your financial questions from how much insurance should you have to how to understand a corporate balance sheet.
Here's my money guide..........2002-06-18
Don't buy this book and save yourself (the money). It's all common sense stuff in here, you won't learn anything new.
Giving this book shows you care........2002-01-25
I ordered this book for my wife. She had tons of "why?" or "how?" or "what's that?" questions that I briefly knew the answer to. This book enabled me to not only point to a one or two paragraph answer to questions such as, "what is a P/E ratio?" but also to get a better grasp on my own finances and wealth management.
This book has since been lent to friends and family. When people learn that I have a passing knowledge about finances and investing, I'm usually inundated with questions. People naturally want to improve their lot in life. And knowledge of the subject is the first step in improvement. I find that this book helps refresh my thoughts on investing, and also is a great tool in helping others.
The book is broken into easy to read divisions. It allows for easy reading of the book when those areas of life come up, e.g. buying a house for us a few months ago. As your world of investing evolves and broadens, so will your reading in this book. It has everything for the beginner and also experienced investor.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to know about stocks, bonds, mutual funds, buying a car, buying a house, or how to budget for a family. Five stars!!
A perfect gift.......2001-06-15
My sister gave me this book after I started getting "serious" about my own finances in my late 20's. I sort of figured that most of this book wouldn't apply to me, but after just 20 pages I already understood why I needed to start saving more, pay off my credit cards, and spend less on insurance. The language is very easy to read. I definitely recommend this book!
Splendid - one of the best of its kind.......2001-04-24
Anybody who doesn't know how cynical I am about the capital markets need only read one of my own (fiction) books, but even I was taken with this terrifically readable guide to investing. Clear, concise and entertaining, but best of all, it has just enough tongue-in-cheek edginess to let you know Maranjian doesn't get high on her own supply: she has a solid grasp on where reality ends and the self-interested hype of Wall Street begins. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Book Description
Billie Jean King didn’t want to play Bobby Riggs. He baited and begged her for months while she ignored his catcalls and challenges. But after Margaret Court’s ignominious defeat in the so-called Mother’s Day Massacre, Billie knew what she had to do despite the personal and professional risks: take on the self-proclaimed male chauvinist pig and slay the myths about women and weakness. And so it was that King’s acquiescence led to the Battle of the Sexes, one of the most wildly surreal moments of the decadent 1970s. The worldwide event, showcasing three sets of tennis in a raucous Houston Astrodome, forever changed the social landscape for women.
In A Necessary Spectacle, Selena Roberts, one of the country’s finest sportswriters and the only female sports columnist in the New York Times’ history, has created a masterful and entertaining journey through the 1970s and beyond, capturing the color and passion, tackiness and anger, prejudice and progress of an American culture in transition. At the heart of the story lies the intersection of two complex characters: Billie Jean King, the daughter of a homemaker and a firefighter who grew up in the Norman Rockwell tradition of the 1950s; and Bobby Riggs, the gambling son of a fundamentalist minister who won everlasting fame as a card-carrying sexist—not because he believed women to be inferior, but because he craved attention.
Roberts enjoyed unprecedented access to the characters in this story, including numerous in-depth interviews with Billie Jean King and her former husband, Larry, as well as the friends and family of Bobby Riggs, who died in 1995. Essential details and insights also were provided through hours of conversation with key figures in the women’s rights movement and Title IX fight, including Gloria Steinem and Donna de Varona, and with tennis legends of the 1970s, such as Chris Evert, Margaret Court, Rosie Casals, and others. This book reveals the outsize personalities of Billie and Bobby; the intensity and intricacy of the Kings’ longtime marriage; the simmering social revolution that pitted chauvinists against feminists and tennis players against each other; and a wrenching coming-out story recounted in intimate detail by Billie Jean King for the first time. By the end of the book, Roberts has traced the cultural continuum of Billie and Bobby’s night at the Astrodome. She relates its significance to the day Richard Williams began hitting bald tennis balls to his pigtailed daughters, Venus and Serena; to the glorious afternoon when more than 90,000 fans watched as the U.S. women’s soccer team won the 1999 World Cup; and, ultimately, to the present day’s second-generation battle to keep Title IX alive. The book’s poignant last scene between Billie and Bobby serves to remind us how much of an effect that 1973 match—and the passion it fueled for change—continues to have on American society, showing how necessary it was, and how necessary it remains.
1973. The Battle of the Sexes.
It was the match that changed everything. In this riveting book by New York Times sports columnist Selena Roberts, the whole spectacle returns, larger than life and more important than ever. This story reaches beyond two outsize and utterly fascinating personalities who emerged during a simmering social revolution that pitted chauvinists against feminists. It also chronicles the complex, longtime marriage of Billie Jean and Larry King; the cavalcade of issues that rocked the 1970s, from equal pay to abortion rights; and a wrenching coming-out story recounted in intimate detail by Billie Jean King for the first time.

the best about a great person, and tennis player.......2006-06-18
she changed the world that nite. read this to know how.
Goes A Bit Off Track.......2006-04-25
Some interesting archaeology about the now nearly forgotten King-Riggs tennis match. Roberts, of the NYT, brings to life how important this thing seemed at the time, even though it all looks decidedly quaint today. Where the author goes off is when she tries to relate this to the federal Title 9 law on equality for women in sports. It's a bit forced, even if valid. Perhaps it's the book's herky-jerky structure that is just not nuanced enough to make this work. She also includes some interesting background about the Williams sisters, the relevance being that they later reaped what Billie Jean King sowed, financially. Maybe so. In the end, Riggs comes off more sympathetic than pathetic, and King is a bit too deified. Still, this is some high quality social history about an episode whose effects still have an echo.
THE MATCH and how it changed the world.......2005-09-14
The subtitle of this book 'the Tennis Match that Leveled the Game' isn't quite strong enough. This single match, called the 'Battle of the Sexes' was far, far more than a tennis match, and the aftereffect was far, far more than levelling the tennis game.
For a tennis standpoint, before The Match womens tennis was not a serious sport. The women played, but almost by themselves. The money, the sponsors, television, the fame wasn't there. After it was all there.
From a legal standpoint, The Match put power behind Title IX that required equal funding in schools for men and womens atheletic programs. From the overall women's rights viewpoint The Match was in 1973, so was Row v. Wade.
Ms. Roberts is a sports columnist. This training gives her a newspaper like writing style that is very well suited to the subject she is covering here. The book reads almost like a novel, an excellent novel but also conveys the impact of The Match that changed women's sports forever.
GREAT BOOK ABOUT A GREAT LEGEND!.......2005-08-27
I'VE FOLLOWED BJK'S CAREER SINCE SHE WON HER 1ST WIMBLEDON TITLE IN 1961! THIS BOOK GIVES YOU A VERY CANDID LOOK INTO THE LIFE OF THIS GREAT TENNIS LEGEND, THE STUGGLES SHE FOUGHT BOTH PERSONAL & PUBLIC.
INTERSTING DETAILS ON THE BATTLE OF THE SEXES WITH BOBBY RIGGS AND HIS LIFE.
AN EASY ENJOYABLE READ FOR ANYONE, BUT ESP. FOR TENNIS FANS FROM THE 60'S70'S ON!
A necessary read!.......2005-08-27
I loved this book! I'm not a huge tennis fan so as I began reading, I was shocked at how quickly this story pulled me in and kept me fascinated. It's about so much more than tennis. The personalities and motivations of Billie Jean and Bobby were so thoroughly explored that as this spectacle of a match was becoming imminent, I could feel the pressure and the tension that must have been felt not only by them, but by many women and men in the 1970s as gender lines were being tested. This book did a great job of framing the importance of that one event, as circus-like as it was. Billie Jean and Bobby brought discussions of gender roles into people's living rooms that day and the consequences have paved the way for women and for the athletes we cheer on today. "A Necessary Spectacle" gave me new insight. Excellent!

Not worth the paper it's written on.......2007-07-14
i'm really getting tired of all the books being published about Selena's death. Even more than 10 years on, people are still cashing in on it and writing about it and it seems to me to be the same story rehashed time and time again.
Don't get me wrong, i love Selena, i think she was an amazing artist, but this book does not do justice to her memory. The author claims that she knows a 'secret' about Selena, that Selena kept a diary and only the author knows what it contains.
She spends the whole book making reference to this while not actually telling us what that 'secret' is. Now, it's been a long time since i've read this 'book' (and i have no desire to again), but i remember the author seemed to sympathise with Yolanda. What the hell is that about? If it wasn't for Yolanda's crazy, selfish act Selena would still be alive, instead of being written about in a cringingly bad account of her life in which the author seems more sympathetic towards the murderer than the victim.
I'm embaressed to say I read this...........2007-07-05
This book is awful...what is this woman even talking about she's like a rambling idiot...oh and there's no secret.
Complete bull.......2006-08-19
When I read this book I thought it was really misleading. It was a plot to make everyone feel sorry for Yolanda. The truth is there is no secret. Yolanda is a lier. No one should feel sorry for her . If she wasn't so busy busselying money from everybodys business she would have know that she would get confronted and eventually fired. She had before inbussled money and it was settled quietly. Ms. Arrass did this book completly wrong and I must say I am disappointed to know that she beleives everything Yolanda says. Selena didn't have an affair with anyone. She wasn't going to hurt herself in anyway because she cares about her family, friends, and fans. She was in love with her husband so why in the world would she cheat on him. She never had a plastic surgeon so that was an evident lie anyway. Yolanda had absoulte no excuse for shooting selena. Yolanda got upset because she knew she had no escape from the truth. There was no way she could get out of being in front of Selena and she tried everything to get out of the situation at that moment and the only way she could do that was to kill or injure selena at that moment. SO THE SECRET IS THERE IS NO SECRET.
Self-Serving Journalism at it's Peak.......2006-02-27
I avoided buying this book years ago simply because I'd already read another review that said the "secret" was not disclosed. Now, I felt prepared to handle that and what I read was a "look at how great my show and I are!" book. She's apparently more able to be manipulated than she'd like to admit, because for some reason she believes an awful lot of what Saldivar told her; things that common sense don't dictate to be true. She states in her book that her show "Primer Impacto" has been criticized for "smacking of sensationalism" and now I know why - and I've never seen the show! "Between the lines" she insinuates that Selena was having an affair with her plastic surgeon and was about to move to Mexico and that that's why Yolanda shot her - to prevent her from causing harm to herself. PUHLEEZ!!!! I couldn't rate this book with negative stars, but if I could've that's what this book would've gotten from me.

Justice for Selena.......2006-11-06
Excellent book, but very long. (Held my attention, but took awhile to get through it.) This is not a Selena fan book - it's strictly about the trial of her assasin. If you are interested in court proceedings, and happen to be a Selena fan, then this is a great book for you.
A Real Page-Turner..........2006-03-13
and I'm not being sarcastic. There is nothing "new and earth-shattering" about Selena or her family; it is what it says it is - a book about the trial. What you learn, though, is how much more there really was and how differently the trial appeared to be going from the prosecutors' and, my guess is, the defense's perspectives than it was from the media's. Mr. Valdez even lets us know what happened after the trial in the appeals that Yolanda filed and why she wasn't eligible for the death penalty.
