My children love this CD set and it has some great stories that they listen to again and again. I particularly love the birthday pumpkin story.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2006-11-10
Echoing some of the other reviews - it's 'thin', disorganized and has a large Bill:Annie ratio. McMurtry's point is that, per the title, BB & AO were among the 1st superstars in America & he repeats it every other chapter or so. It reads like something that was whipped up over a weekend. The style & depth of the book are intentional on McMurtry's part but readers should be forewarned that this isn't a traditional biography.
Is this all?.......2006-07-16
This slender volume conveys the slightest amount of information about its subject in a confused, repetitive, meandering style. Surely there is more to the story than this.
True McMurtry Work.......2006-01-05
This book is presented in true McMurtry style showing careful research, painstaking attention to facts vs. fiction, identifying what could be fictional about the people being discussed, and the wonderful McMurtry style we all expect with each publication. Having visited Buffalo Bill's gravesite and the small museum there, this book rounds out the images I have of the man, the performer, and the first superstar of North America.
Surprisingly thin for McMurtry.......2005-09-09
Being a complete sucker for his western fiction, I was surprised at how slim a book this is. There a more than a few good stories to tell about Americas' first media star, but the chapters are so short, McMurtry never gets any momentum going.
It's surprising too that while the book is supposed to be about the two title characters, Cody gets the lions share of attention, while Annie Oakley gets only a handful of chapters.
mc murtry scores again.......2005-08-29
If you are a fan of the old west or not, this book will entertain you and make you one. I now know more about buffalow bill and annie oakley along with a deeper understanding of that last period of the wild west and the characters that made it such a wonderful exciting time in america.

Customer Reviews:
A Kiddie Biography - a review of "Little Sure Shot".......2006-11-27
This interesting reader is about Annie Oakley. It combines photos as well as colorful artwork to depict Annie's life; from the time when she first dares to pick up a gun and hunt for food, circa 1869, to her death in 1926.
It covers a great many aspects of Annie's life including her failed attempt to get an education (she was ridiculed for her poverty), her long marriage to a sharp-shooter (he died 3 weeks after she did), and how she eventually sailed with Buffalo Bill to Europe where she saw Queen Victoria. All in all it is a fascinating story.
My motivation for acquiring this book was that I wanted to introduce some 'biographies' into my daughters reading. This fit the bill.
In regards to the verbal stylings of the book, I have to say that at first I was a little put off as the book is written in a very odd third-person voice - see below. But as it turns out it makes for a fairly engaging read for young folk. I've included a few paragraphs below for your perusal as there is not 'search inside' this book feature for this particular text.
Mama will not like this, thinks the girl.
But I'm going to do it anyhow. I have to.
The girl takes the gun into the woods....
And from later in the book:
Could one day change everything? Yes!
Life was never the same for the Moses
family after Annie picked up that gun.
She put food on the table. She even
sold the game she shot. A fancy restaurant
bought the quail and grouse. A trader
named Frenchy La Motte bought the
foxes, minks, and raccoons for their
skins. For the first time ever, Annie's
family didn't have to worry about money.
As for the Reading Level, I think those that are listed are pretty realistic. My daughter at six could read the words, but was put off by the shear amount of text per page. Probably by second grade this won't be a problem.
Four Stars. [B-] Colorful artwork is supplemented by photos. This book shows Annie as she struggles and overcomes obstacles. She grows from a poor girl to an accomplished woman at a time when social mobility was rather limited for women. Besides Annie, Buffalo Bill and Sitting Bull are introduced to children.
The only drawback (assuming that shooting animals doesn't offend you) would be the odd choice of 'voice' that the book is written in. I've included a few paragraphs (above) so you can judge for yourself. We enjoyed this book.
Our third grade girls loved it!.......1998-12-02
This is the second book we read in our recently formed Mother-Daughter Book Club. The members of our Club are third grade students at Calvary Episcopal School in Richmond, Texas. Our girls had this to say about the book: "Little Sure Shot is the best book I've ever read. I really recommend this book. Annie Oakley is the best shot I have ever heard of. She does shooting tricks and sounds like a nice girl." Caitlin, age 8 "I liked this book because she practices and does not give up but I did not like this book because it is a little sad. P.S. You should read this book." Sarah, age 8 "You should read Annie Oakley because she can shoot a cigarette out of a prince's mouth." Grethe, age 8 "I liked this book because Annie was famous, she was a great shot, she was nice, she was the only girl that could shoot like she did, she got married, she made lots of money, she was kind and she found that she could put food on the table." Christine, age 8 If you work hard, you could do anything." Lauren, age 8 "She was a good shot and a nice person. She was very poor. She lived a long time ago. She could do lots of things with a gun." Megan, age 8 A couple of the girls read this book several times and loved it which made their moms happy as well.

Check out page 10!.......2006-12-07
Awesome photos, including one on page 10 I haven't seen anywhere else. If you look closely, you can see Annie's nipple thru her outfit!! Mmmmmm--I can imagine victorian Annie blushed and was mortified and wanted to destroy the photo, but her husband grinned and kept the picture himself! I wonder....
Probably the best.......2005-08-08
This is probably the best book about Annie Oakley although it is mostly intended as an illustrated album. It narrates the life story of "little sharp shot" with particular emphasis on the period where she joined the Buffalo Bill Wild West performance, which was, of course, her prime.
The photos are great and the book teaches us a lot about show business mechanisms which we think are very recent but have been used from the days of yore.
I particularly like that amazing picture of Buffalo Bill and some indians crossing a venetian sqare in a gondola. How post-modern can you get?
The only thing preventing me from giving it a 5 star is the paper quality that is not that good but, for this price could you ask for more?
A great book for those who like the West, to know how legends and myths were made, the ways of the world in the late 19th century and, above all, why the USA has such an influence in European pop culture today.

Book Description
Who says boys are the only ones allowed to have talents and use them? That's what Phoebe Anne Moses, or Annie, as she prefers to be called, would like to know. From the day Annie first picks up her father's rifle at age 8, it's clear she has a rather unusual gift. She is the sharpest shooter in the land. Her Quaker mother would rather Annie concentrate on more traditional activities like cooking and sewing. But Annie can't deny what's in her soul. It's only when she's out in the wilderness, alone with the quiet and the trees and the animals, that she truly feels alive. And Annie knows the game she shoots just may save her family from a life of poverty and despair.
Customer Reviews:
AIMING TRUE TO HERSELF AND HER DREAMS.......2007-08-04
Overcoming gender bias and her mother's stern Quaker attempts to make her act like a lady, young Annie Moses of rural Ohio achieved world recognition for her skills as sharpshooter by the age of 16. Born the 5th of 7 children into a struggling farm family Annie was sent to live at the Country Poorhouse at the age of 7. Jumping from the frying pan into the fire she eagerly accepted the opportunity to be a live-in girl servant (slave) for a vicious couple and their new baby. She acquired moderate schooling and excellent sewing skills, but she was always victimized by bullies. Her greatest secret comfort during these terrible years of trial was her Pa's bag of bullets and the quiet friendship of shy Sally. After suffering several kinds of abuse from the family of Wolves, as she termed them, Annie escaped and gradually made her way back to her real home and mother, whose situation had greatly changed.
But Annie was born to greatness thanks to Pa's beloved rifle and his careful lessons. She treasured and respected his instructions even before he died when she was six. Ma despaired of keeping Annie indoors as a seamstress when the girl longed to roam free in the outdoors, providing the family with both food and money to pay the mortgage, plus other improvements. Even her strict mother realized that it was a sin to deny a God-given talent and Annie, she reluctantly admitted, surely had a Shooting gift. Although she never approved of it, Ma was always grateful for what her gun could provide. Despite the thorny path of her girlhood, Annie learned important lessons abut human nature--and the importance of Gratitude and the need for Forgiveness. A fast-paced, enjoyable read for girls of all ages.
An excellent choice for a read-aloud book!.......2006-01-13
I am a librarian in a small elementary school, and I am reading this book out-loud to a class. They listen with rapt attention and can recall details of the book every week when we get together again. It has appeal for both boys and girls, as Annie has many interesting challenges in her life that lead to her learning how to shoot a gun. This is a must-read book!
Who Says Only Boys Can have Special Talents?.......2002-12-18
I absolutely loved this book. Of course, all books on Annie Oakley have always interested me, but this one stood apart from the rest. The way that the story is told from Annies point of view makes everything make more sense. You understand the emotions Annie feels and it's almost as if you're really connecting with this character. Sheila Solomon Klass did a wonderful job. It's not as if Annie Oakley is trying to become famous or prove the world wrong, it's just that she's trying to feed her poor Quaker family and pay off the mortgage using her talent in Sharpshooting. Touring Worldwide wasn't really part of the plan, but it was certainly the outcome!
Few Fun Facts..................2002-10-08
"Wow!", was my first word when I read this book. I knew that Annie Oakley was poor and that we fathers both died when she was young. But I didn't know that at one point she was sold as a servant! Or had a learning disabilty!
I used this book for a book report, in which you had get a bio. of an inportant womean or a man of the 1800s. Many of them selected Abe Lincoln, Clara Barton, or Laura Ingalls Wilder. But my report was unique in it's own way.
This was a really good book!.......2000-06-09
I think this book was very, very good. The author made Annie'slife so interesting. It was a fun book to read. This book also madeAnnie Oakley become my hero. It proved that boys aren't the best at everything.

The book is full of pictures and is great for kids to learn about our past and the legend of Annie Oakley.
An American Icon............2002-01-02
Annie Oakley, markswoman, famous for her horseback-riding stunts and trick-shot performances, comes to life in Sue Macy's new compelling and fascinating biography, Bull's-Eye. Born Phoebe Ann Moses, a Quaker, in the backwoods of Ohio, Annie Oakley overcame extreme childhood poverty, abuse, and work as a laborer before making the giant leap to sharpshooter and world renown entertainer. Her amazing story, so often seen in movies, Broadway shows, and television is fleshed out here, relying less on the larger-than-life, wild west myth, and more on the intimate details and little known facts about this remarkable woman's life. Ms Macy's easy to read text is told in an engaging, conversational tone, and is enhanced with actual historical photographs, posters, advertisements, and newpaper articles, as well as quotes from Annie herself, from her unpublished autobiography. With a chronology, resource guide, and author's note at the end to fill in additional details and further discussions, Bull's-Eye is perfect for youngsters 8-12, and is a unique little treasure that is sure to whet the appetite and send imaginations soaring.

It helped alot on the report I was doing. A very informative and descriptive. I loved reading every minute of it!
Book Description
A survivor who refused to give up.
The Amazing Life and Times of Annie Oakley.
"Aim at a high mark and you will hit it" is the motto the legendary sharpshooter and star of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, Annie Oakley, lived by. How did a young girl growing up on a hardscrabble Ohio farm become a legend in her own time?
Based on her own writings and illustrated with hauntingly expressive oil paintings by one of America's foremost illustrators, this dramatic picture-book biography offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of a courageous young girl who went on to break barriers in the field of sports, becoming recognized by Will Rogers and others as "the greatest woman rifle shot the world has ever produced."
Customer Reviews:
Aim High............2002-02-04
Stephen Krensky details "the amazing life and times of Annie Oakley" in this engaging and creative picture book biography. From her hard and impoverished childhood in Ohio, to her young adult years as a sharpshooter and entertainer in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, the story of her life is fascinating and full of drama. Annie was resourceful and tough as nails. She knew what she wanted, and made it happen through hard work and determination. Mr Krensky's interesting and informative text, draws on Annie Oakley's own autobiographical writings, and is enhanced by Bernie Fuchs' marvelously expressive and evocative oil paintings done in dark and subdued earth tones. Together word and art paint a portrait of a remarkable woman who never let anyone or anything get her down for long. With an afterword to fill in the gaps and complete the story of Annie Oakley's amazing life, Shooting For The Moon is perfect for youngsters 5-9, and is definitely an introductory biography that shouldn't be missed. As Annie always told everyone..."Aim at a high mark and you will hit it. No, not the first time, nor the second, and maybe not the third. But keep on aiming and keep on shooting. Finally you'll hit the bull's-eye of success, for only practice will make you perfect."

What an excellent book!! I could not put this book down!! It is a definate page-turner!! Very well written. The author did her research as it gives an insight to a great historical figure. I highly recommend this book!!!
Annie Oakley by Shirl Kasper is the best book I've read........1999-06-07
Shirl Kasper has written the most historically accurate book on Oakley. Her marriage to Butler was in 1882, remember she loped 6 years off her age when another younger woman sharpshooter joined Buffalo Bill's show? She was 21 when she married Butler, not 16 as many books show.
