Good book with some very interesting content........2007-09-10
Off The Rails is Rudy Sarzo's offering about his life with Ozzy Osbourne's Blizzard Of Ozz band that toured in 1981 and 1982. The guitarist in this band (Randy Rhoads) is the primary focus of the story telling, and that is a real gift for all fans of his short life. At times, this book is impossible to put down. Rudy does a good job explaining the mundane life of a traveling musician mixed with the excitement of playing with such a prolific musician as Rhoads. Any info regarding the short life of Randy Rhoads is interesting , but at times, the stories are very compelling. The chapters about the live album, Ozzy's abuse towards Sharon, and Randy's final days, are all right up there with The Dirt, and many other great books that humanize these icons. Good job Rudy Sarzo.
A great look at the Blizzard.......2007-07-06
Hats off to Rudy for putting this together for those interested in the Blizzard of Ozz years and especially Randy Rhoads. Well worth a read if you are a fan.

Great book for any fan of Randy Rhoads. It's great, after all of these years, to hear stories about my hero. Randy made me want to play guitar, and this book means so much to me. Rudy is a great story teller. By the end of the book you'll feel like you knew Randy too, which hurts because we all know how the story ends.

i really enjoyed reading rudy's book,it almost reads like a diary. lots of insight into what was happening and going on during that time period. it's really a "must read" for any ozzy,rudy,brad gillis,randy rhoads and quiet riot fans. very informative and hard to put down once you start reading it! i'm very glad that i bought it and so too will you! jimmy cupo

This book is a must read for any Randy fan. Rudy did an amazing job writing this book. At times you feel like your at the concerts with them. Rudy goes into great detail about day to day tour life, which is realy amazing. Rudy GREAT job.. now you need to write a Quiet Riot book!!!!

...drivel about the excesses of fame; i.e., alcohol, drugs, adultery, the love of money. I cannot wax rhapsodic about a woman who accepts this behavior under the guise of "unconditional love". The best part of this book is near the end when Ms. Osbourne tells us her family members have gotten clean and sober.

I read this book on the treadmill, and let me tell you, it kept me going. If you are going to be stuck somewhere unsavory, bring this book. Sharon has led a very adventurous life and tells this story with some great details. I love biographies and this did not disappoint. Even if you are not a fan of Ozzy or their show, you will be entertained.

I'm simply astonished by the sheer amount pf information contained in this book. Dont'get it wrong: this is a HUGE book, with A4 paper format, more than three hundred pages with two columns in each one. But, if you're into Black Sabbath and Ozzy, you will read it really fast.
The books gives detailed information about almost everything. It has good taste without relaying in useless gossip. This was one of most gratifying readings I've had in years. Highly recommended!
Not a literary masterpiece... but we are dealing with Sabbath here........2007-05-27
If you're looking for a comprehensive account of the comings and goings of singers and drummers during the 80's and 90's, this book is very interesting. It's extremely detailed. Much of the information seems to come from Geoff Nichols, the unheralded keyboardist (unheralded to the point where he was off the stage half the time) who was with Sabbath for more years than anyone but Tony and Geezer.
As a piece of writing, this is not the best. It tends to read like a very long high school term paper. There is little concept of flow and readability. Every incident is given equal weight no matter how important or how insignificant. It seems like the author literally took every bit of information at his disposal and put it here, leaving some situations underappreciated and some boringly overdeveloped.
As stated before, the editing and production are also pretty abysmal. I'm not trying to be overcritical here but, let's face it, this is something they want us to pay for. If this information was something I came across on a free website I would be a little more forgiving.
That being said, if you're going to buy this book you are, more likely than not, a big fan. You'll find something here to justify the purchase. Just don't expect to sit next to the fire with this one sipping chardonnay and eating bon bons to achieve literary orgasm. It's not gonna happen.

An excellent read for the most devoted of Sabbath fans. However, this is by far the worst editing I've ever seen of any publication in my entire life! Blatant mispellings & poor grammar abound.

There is nothing new here in this book that has not already been said! Why does the author find that he needs to rehash what he has already written in two previous excellent publications, and submit it as a new title?

The Origin of German Tragic Drama is generally acknowledged as Benjamin's most sustained and original work and as one of the main sources of literary modernism in the twentieth century. It begins with a general theoretical introductions on the nature of the baroque art of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, concentrating on the peculiar stage-form of royal martyr dramas called Trauerspiel. Later, Benjamin discusses the engravings of Dürer, and the theatre of Shakespeare and Calderón. Baroque tragedy, he argues was distinguished from classical tragedy by its shift from myth into history.

I found this book interesting. But my book, like that of a previous reviewer, completely fell apart upon the first reading. Frustrating to have to treat my NEW book like some loose sheaf of sibylline leaves bound together with rubber bands.
Excellent book/poor edition.......2006-02-22
Benjamin has written a highly valuable book here. My concern is with Verso's treatment of it. The binding is horrible -- my edition literally fell apart on the first read. There are no annotations which, in a book as wide-ranging and dense as this, is a gross oversight. In short, a horrible edition of a great book. Find another version.
Essential reading for students of critical theory.......2002-08-12
While it concerns baroque Trauerspiel (literally, "mourning play" or "lamentation play," not "tragic drama") this book is necessary reading for students of critical theory who don't have literature as a primary field of interest. In it, Benjamin develops his critique of allegory (which he later amended in his work on Baudelaire and would play a major role in The Arcades Project) as well as his method of philosphical history, which would decisively influence Theodor Adorno (see, for example, Adorno's book on Kierkegaard and his lecture "The Idea of Natural History"). Don't let the notoriously opaque prologue dissuade you from reading beyond the opening pages--the rest of the book has more stylistic and conceptual clarity (which doesn't mean it's easy!). In fact, you may want to skip the prologue and return to it after reading the body of the text. In any case, this book will give you a solid grounding for understanding the foundations of Benjamin's work--it should not be slighted. I deduct a star not because of Benjamin but because of the translation (less than sterling) and Steiner's introduction which, despite correcting the title's translation, restricts itself to literary concerns.

Grow roses with the environment in mind.......2006-08-23
This book is easy reading and interesting enough to keep you turning the pages to learn more. Work with "Mother Nature" and be pleased with the results.
Superb resource for rose growers in Zones 2-5.......2004-07-30
Although the book features 49 roses (large photos, for the most part, and explicit detail), a list of more than 220 varieties with their attributes and information rounds out an extensive guide to growing roses in places with extreme winter weather.
The photos and large explanatory drawings make this reference stand out from others. The photos are large enough to drool over and the drawings actually serve as a teaching tool, rather than simple decoration. Want a visual reference to siting roses in the most favorable microclimate on your property? A nearly half-page drawing and its caption should do it for you. Would you like a clear and authoritative examination of the various pests who might take interest in roses? They are drawn at many times their size and labeled; the accompanying text will help you learn quickly how (and how hard) to fight back. This is an ORGANIC guide, so the recommendations are effective without being terribly dangerous.
The first section of the book, Flowering of a Dream, addresses landscaping, caring for roses (also known as keeping them alive) over winters, nurturing, the dread diseases and creepy crawlers, and propagation. The detail is sufficient without drowning in verbosity people who would be out in the garden. And the writing, itself, compares favorably with other fine garden writing, which makes the reading enjoyable as well as useful.
The second section, The Varieties: Petals of Light, offers photos and detailed assessment of 49 roses, sorted by type. Here is a reality check for the catalogs we all like to peruse. Lists of hardy varieties and additional lists of nurseries, rose organizations, and other sources complete the section. Finally, there is an entirely adequate table of contents and a very thorough index.
Whether you have relocated, as I did, from a more hospitable horticultural climate or whether you are native to the regions of real winter, you will find a treasure of knowledge in this slender volume. Gift suggestion: if you know a gardener moving to a cold zone, treat her to this lovely book. It's the book I wish I'd had when we first arrived.
A Passionate guide for would be rose growers........2001-06-14
The author's passion for roses shows on every page. The details on soil, nourishment, planting location, climate are highly valuable. Even creating new roses is covered. The photos and history of every selected plant show lots of devoted research. The listing of Rose nurseries and organizations saves lots of planning time. Love that book.
Hardy Roses earns its space on my bookshelf!.......2000-01-02
This book is as useful as a reference as it is lovely to look at. Growing roses at my home in USDA hardiness zone 3 limits choices to a few shrubs found at the local garden center, but 'Hardy Roses' provides well-organized lists of additional choices one can find in catalogs. Want a rose that smells divine? Use the charts that indicate the degree of fragrance. Require disease resistant varieties? The lists tell you which ones are easy to keep healthy. Equally valuable are the lists of catalog suppliers, because chances are, these varieties won't be available at the local outlets. Cultural information is here too, but seems slanted toward shrub rose growers rather than us die-hards determined to grow hybrid teas at any cost in impossible conditions. Along with Ortho's 'All About Roses', 'Hardy Roses' is the most-used of my 20 or so books on roses, and is a very good value. I recommend that after you receive it, keep a dust cover on the paperback version so you can carry it around shopping with you without damaging its pretty cover.
The best book on growing hardy roses in cold climates........1998-10-01
This book inspires cold-climate gardeners to grow roses. The writing is clear and easy to understand and the photos are beautiful. It covers information from where to plant your roses (including a discussion on microclimates) to growing to starting roses from seed and cuttings. This "Diary" Really, Really Shouldn't Be Read.......2005-09-28
As a writer whose major influence has always been the writings of Ozzy Osbourne, I decided to buy this book, to learn about the stories behind the classics. I was elated to see the many photos the book contains-many of which that are rarities-but as for the book itself, I was disappointed greatly.
First, I should mention that the stories for Ozzy's earlier work are inaccurate. Back in 2002, Bob Daisley started a feud with Ozzy over lost royalties. Daisley made many remarks about the music, including that he was the sole writer of nearly every Ozzy song from his first three albums, including the classic song "Suicide Solution" (Daisley claimed he wrote the song specifically about Ozzy's alcoholism, while Ozzy contends that it was written about Bon Scott, of AC/DC fame). The writer of this book used faulty information for most of Ozzy's solo career; the above was only one example of the book's errors. The book, itself, was written in 2002.
Sadly, the book is also very incomplete. There are no stories whatsoever for the "Ultimate Sin" album-the book claims that there aren't many stories on it. That's still no excuse for not including any known facts about it. Most of the book is full of stories that everyone already knows (Ozzy fans-why was "Goodbye to Romance" written? How did Randy Rhoads die?) while it lacks depth in the so-called "unknown stories," filling up many passages with stories of the dove & bat decapitations and miscellaneous other well-worn tales. What's worse, many of the classics aren't even discussed in detail. I was hoping to read about the writing of "Waiting for Darkness" but I came up disappointed, as this book only mentions it in a sentence or two.
Overall, this book is dreadful and a huge waste of money. If you want to see the many pictures it contains, go for it. But if you want to know about the real stories, save your money and make guesses. In comparison, they just might be accurate.
A great look at Sabbath and Ozzy.......2004-09-14
Diary of a Madman is a must have book for any Sabbath/Ozzy fan. Carol Clark takes you through "Black Sabbath" all the way to "Down to Earth" highlighting all the important band events along the way while providing interesting information on all the important Ozzy/Sabbath songs. This book is a easy and fascinating read. Even if your a die hard Ozzy/Sabbath fan you will still find many interesting tidbits in this coffe table book. It also contains a GREAT selection of pictures!
Best for the rare Sabbath pix.......2003-02-24
One thing that needs to mentioned is the rarity of the Black Sabbath pictures included. I've been a Sabbath collector for years, and have not seen most of the pictures included--live, backstage, and photo-shoot settings. Many of them are of Tony Iommi (Ozzy's arch-enemy of old), as it happens.
As far as the actual commentary on the songs, in this subject matter it is hard to tell what is truly legitimate. Manipulated statements and entirely invented statements abound in the music journalism industry, so you have to take that at face value. Some comments attributed to Ozzy are rather articulate (not his style), and therefore one would have to wonder if they are really his own.
There is one GLARING mistake in the pictures which tends to sap the already-low credibility from a publication of this sort: a photo of Brad Gillis (brief Ozzy guitarist) is next to a photo of Dave Spitz (brief Sabbath bassist), and the caption below them reads something to the effect of "Brad Gillis was replaced by Jake E. Lee", implying that the photo of Dave Spitz is really Jake E. Lee (which is strange since Dave is clearly holding a bass guitar!).
This book is great for the rare old pictures, but it is still nothing more than one of a million books of questionable accuracy put together by bandwagon-jumping "authors" who most likely have little idea of who or what they're talking about and are trying to cash in on a current fad.
Good Things Come in Glossy Packages........2003-02-19
First and foremost, this book is a glossy, photo-packed, coffee-table tome. I originally purchased it because I was hoping for in-depth, analytical breakdowns of Ozzy's songs by himself and his band members. I didn't quite get it.
While there are plenty of Ozzy, Sabbath and other quotes, they're pretty much the same ones we've been hearing for years. It also only covers Ozzy's hit standards (i.e. Crazy Train, War Pigs, NIB). None of my favorites were covered, but I can't blame the author for that, I suppose. It also covered the infamous (and so, so tired) stories of the bat, the Alamo, the doves.
The saving grace of this book is the photos. It's absolutely overflowing with awesome pics of Ozzy, Sabbath, Randy Rhoads, Zakk Wylde and other band members. A lot of these photos are pretty rare, and I'm sure some of them are never-before-seen.
It's not too shabby in the writing department either. Clerk is a lucid and fun author, and the format of the book is very eye-catching. The pages are multi-colored, the title fonts are trippy, and in every chapter, there's a paragraph that has been written backwards and upside down faintly apparent in the background (a shoutout to all those who believe in subliminal messages). The editors did an outstanding job of making it enjoyable to read, but not silly and overloaded with visuals.
Price is very good, and the book isn't a disappointment for what it is. I'm very pleased with it. An essential for any Ozzy fan.

Great for Serious Begginers.......2007-04-01
I'm 25 and have been playing guitar for about 14yrs. I started out playing electric and was motivated to play like Randy from the start. Before I ever even picked up a guitar I always dreamed and wondered "What if I could sound like that?" refering to Randy on the Tribute album, truley a masterpiece performance/recording. I was young and ambitious and wanted to sound just like him. When I found Wolfe Marshall's transcriptions I fell in love. Marshall was the best for me and my guitar playing developement during those early days because he showed me how to model my playing style after that of Randy's. Through Marshall I learned Randy better than I could ever imagine learning Randy without Marshall. Truley a great book. Now after having impressed many o' college coed and friends with some awsome guitar playing and feel I have Randy & Marshall to thank. Really what come's out in my playing more than even skill (which you will learn) is the feel for the music. There is true feeling in Randy's playing and if you honestly make the effort to learn you can become a really good player because you will feel the music. Sounds wacky but I don't know how else to explain it. You will certainly see smiles on peoples faces when you play not so much because you can play (really good if you study hard) but because people will know you are enjoying yourself pushing yourself emotionally to your limits through your instrument. Randy's inspiration makes that possible ONLY IF YOU PRACTICE AND APPRECIATE HIS STYLE. Good luck to any begginer choosing to take on this book and this masterpiece...take it serious and you'll have something with you for the rest of your life that will make your life that much nicer, guitar skills and guitar heart. Only works if you really feel like you can be a great guitarist...push yourself with this book!
Helpful hint: listen to the album if you get stuck at any point while reading the book and feel like you need clarity at any point during a song. Usually by listening to the record you'll go "Oh that's what marshall meant here". Marshall will tell you and Randy will show you...great way to learn!

His songwriting (yes, Randy's songwriting cause Ozzy hasn't written anything close to what was on 'Blizzard' and 'Diary' since!) was clearly GENIUS!!! Randy's solos challenged your music theory knowlege and technique. Then he would touch your heart too with his SOLO'S. Kind of telling you what kind of person he was!!! A genuine one, a nice one (obviously INTELLIGENT AS WELL). Someone dedicated to music. NO ONE HAS COME CLOSE SINCE. AS A WORKING MUSICIAN IN ANOTHER GENRE I WILL TELL YOU THAT RANDY HAD A FEELING IN HIS PLAYING NO ONE WILL EVER DUPLICATE!!! He took that polka dot flying V and MADE PEOPLE REMEMBER BUDDY GUY!!!! Hell, I bet Chuck Berry is proud of him too!!! DO YOU REALLY KNOW ABOUT GUITAR? DO YOU KNOW THAT CHUCK BERRY IS THE KING OF ROCK AND ROLL!!!! DO YOU KNOW THAT "JOHN LENNON" SAID THAT IF ROCK AND ROLL HAD ANOTHER NAME, IT WOULD BE "CHUCK BERRY"? I JUST LOVE MUSIC PERIOD, I GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE.....

Randy Rhoads is the best guitar player in rock that I have ever heard in my life.......2006-03-20
I'm 26 and play guitar, and I have to say that Rhoads was the best of the best..the only guy that comes close in my opinion is Zakk Wylde.
Dimebag Darrell, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen and Stevie Ray Vaugn also come to mind,,,but Rhoads is my favorite..I dont have this book but I have the album..I wish I had the privlidge of seeing him perform live

I was lucky enough to grow up watching Randy play weekends at the Starwood on Santa Monica Blvd with Quiet Riot. The guy is still the best I have ever heard and this "Randy Rhoads Tribute" truly rocks. Sorry everyone, if you never saw the skinny dude with his polka dot bow tie live, this is the best you can do!

A perfect note-for note transcription of one of Randy's performances (in Detroit, I think) on three sides, and one in England for the final side of the album. This book is sort of a biography on Ozzy. It's great because it shows only what Ozzy, himself, said(it also has pices of what the members of Black Sabbath had to say). Its pieced together very well and is excellent for any Ozzy fan. Plus the price is right.
