Who can resist feeling cheerful when envisioning Julie Andrews singing "My Favorite Things" to her young charges in The Sound of Music? In fact, this song by the incredibly successful, award-winning (34 Tony Awards, 15 Academy Awards, 2 Pulitzer Prizes, 2 Grammy Awards, and an Emmy Award) musical team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II has become as familiar as any nursery rhyme to many children during the more than 40 years since it was written. And now, with the warm, cozy illustrations by Renée Graef (illustrator of E.T.A. Hoffman's The Nutcracker, adapted by Janet Schulman), children can enjoy the delicious images and lilting notes of the classic song any time. Each illustration is framed with a folksy rustic border, and portrays a happy family in an idyllic rural setting enjoying "raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens" and "doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles" all year round. And if the raindrops on roses look ever so faintly like aphids, well, the "bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens" on the following page should more than make up for it. Naturally, the book comes complete with the score of "My Favorite Things," so families can sing or play along to their hearts' content. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Rodgers and Hammerstein's beloved song from The Soundof Music has captured hearts for generations. Now acclaimed illustrator Renée Graef's heartwarming illustrations give it new meaning. Complete with its score, My Favorite Things is perfect for reading and sharing.

5 out of 5 stars Child's Favorite Book!.......2007-02-06

This was my favorite song when I was a little girl so when I saw this book, I knew I had to have it! It has now become my 5 year old daughter's favorite book and she asks (or should I say demands) me to read it to her every night. She knows all the words and sings along as we look at the beautifully illustrated pictures. This book even has the sheet music at the back of the book! I highly recommend purchasing this item.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite things.......2006-03-15

I'm an infant/toddler childcare teacher. My Favorite Things, is a beautifully illustrated book. It captures the wonder and sweetness of one of the best songs in the move, "The Sound of Music". I sing this book to my little ones. It captures their attention better than reading it.

5 out of 5 stars My girls & I all LOVE this book they are 2 & 4 and I am 38!.......2003-07-08

Illustrations are like soft memories and evoke warm thoughts of childhood and this song. I believe this book works VERY well for young and older children. I love the sublty of imagery in clouds at end of book when children are staring up at sky imagining "favorite things". Both my two and 4 year old can sing this song now. Words and music are included in back to make this a BONUS for anyone musically inclined. A must have for anyone who likes the song!

5 out of 5 stars Add This To Your List of Favorite Things.......2001-11-21

I discovered this book only a few days after watching a rerun of the wonderful movie "The Sound of Music." This book really enhances the beautiful lyrics of the song from that movie called "My Favorite Things" with lovely, heartfelt illustrations filled with nostalgia and the innocence of children. The colors glow with soft light and scenes are either set in cozy, homey environments or in serene natural settings. The lyrics and music are printed at the back of the book so you can play it on the piano for your children or just sing it to them as you go along. My children are all grown up and no grandkids yet, so I know from experience that it's quite alright to sing it to yourself, too! This is a delightful book.

5 out of 5 stars Fun to read, Fun to sing.......2001-09-15

I'm a mom of few known lullabys. This song I knew and sang it to my infant daughter many times in the middle of the night. I was delighted to find this book. I love to sing the song as we page through the lovely illustrations. My daughter always relates to when 'the bee stings' and the girl is sad and getting a hug from Mom. This is a book I can read more than once, even after a busy day in toddlerhood. My daughter is starting to sing the song on her own now, which is adorable and rewarding. My husband likes this book too.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful vocal selections.......2006-12-08

As someone who is not involved in performing in musical theater, but has a great appreciation for it, this book was wonderful! It has all the big hits from the show and is a wonderful book with great arrangements of the songs! I HIGHLY recommend this wonderful book!

5 out of 5 stars Complete vocal score to the theatrical version.......2006-05-11

This is the complete vocal score to Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Sound of Music." It contains all the vocal lines and underscoring from the theatrical-not the movie-version of the show. It's not ALL that different, but there are a few songs that were cut from the movie which are included here. Conversely, there are a few songs from the movie version which were not in the original stage version that are not included here. Other minor discrepancies between the two productions include the ordering of the songs "Climb Every Mountain," "Do-Re-Mi," and "My Favorite Things."

That being said, the actual score is the typical piano-reduction score as used by most musical productions. A complete list of characters is provided, though there is no discussion of their vocal ranges. A breakdown of the original orchestrations by Robert Russell Bennett is also included, as is a synopsis of scenes and a complete index of musical numbers. Instrumental cues are included throughout the score.

4 out of 5 stars This book has it all!.......1999-05-23

As a musical theatre performer, I found this score to be complete and a wonderful tool for auditions (especially the not-so-well-known songs that didn't appear in the movie version).

4 out of 5 stars nice.......1998-09-29

I'm not a great fan of the music, but it is fun to play. It is a nice combination of music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating, charming double bio.......2002-11-09

Frederick Nolan tells the story of Rodgers and Hammerstein both as a team and as separate people. Indeed there is a good deal of space allotted to their careers BEFORE they ever worked together. But after they team up the narrative becomes more lively and a real page turner, at least partly because Nolan's style is graceful and charming in itself. He seems to have read everything written about them, even going so far as to watch TV kinescopes of them from the 1950s, and he talked to many people who knew them, worked with them.

It's the backstage stories that make the book sing. Practically every page has a at least one fascinating anecdote. And he doesn't sugar-coat their personalities--Rodgers's curtness, even cruelty, and Hammerstein's insecurity, tendency to swallow his pride.

It's hard to read the book without singing to yourself. My God, what songs these two wrote! But more than that, what dramatists they were; they broke convention again and again and mostly successfully.

5 out of 5 stars Score scores!.......2007-01-10

I ordered several copies of the score and found all to be in superb condition.

5 out of 5 stars Full musical score.......2006-02-19

This is a complete score of the music for the Oklahoma stage version- vocal, group vocal, and instrumental transcription to piano. All music for dance segments is included. It is NOT a complete libretto with all actor lines - some are included within the various numbers. An excellent source for the music of the entire play - although the tessitura is quite high. The gentleman who reviews this product as bogus must have purchased something else entirely.

2 out of 5 stars Avoid........2004-08-28

Disappointing. The description on Amazon says 16 pages. I wondered how they fit the libretto into 16. They didn't. Just 6 schmaltzy tunes. Avoid this slim, slim, slim (e.g. partial lyrics for the 6 tunes that are included) offering.

Proper title is: "Selections from the Production Oklahoma!"
Which would be a hint, eh?

Musical theater lovers will rejoice upon discovering Rodgers & Hammerstein, the visually rich, musical-by-musical overview of one of Broadway's most creative duos. Ethan Mordden traces the output of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II from their first musical project together (Oklahoma) to their very last (The Sound of Music). With each of these, readers are given detailed (and sometimes critical) notes on the production processes and behind-the-scenes tidbits. The media backlash against Allegro--due to choreographer Agnes de Mille firing a cast dancer she had conflicts with--is explained, as is the opening night flop of Me and Juliet. And, though less remembered today, Mordden gives us detailed notes and pictures from Pipe Dream, the pair's ill-fated adaptation of John Steinbeck's Cannery Row. The real magic behind Rodgers & Hammerstein, though, isn't in these ephemeral notes but in the book's lavish illustrations. Backdrop designs, cast recording album covers, and production photos tell a story here that words simply cannot. There have been numerous books chronicling the genius of Rodgers & Hammerstein (and, truth be told, many serve as better introductions to the duo), but few capture and illustrate the pair's magic like this one. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great reading and viewing.......2007-10-16

I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. Being a Rodgers and Hammerstein fan, anyway, I was interested to see how this author evaluated their work. I especially liked some of the inside about their working relationship and their different personalities. Happily, Mordden was not content to write about just R & H shows, but to make comparisons to others of their era.
The pictures accompanying the text simply added to the appeal. Not only pictures taken for publicity purposes, but set designs, album covers, etc.
I do not agree with all of Mordden's conclusions; but he supported his thoughts well. After all, critics do not have to agree.
I am anxious now to read and look at his series of the decades of the Broadway musical.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful and fascinating book for those who love R&H.......2001-12-16

This could have just been a coffee-table book with beautiful photos but a negligible text. Fortunately, someone had the excellent idea of asking Ethan Mordden to write the text.

The result is that a very informative, insightful, well-written text accompanies the beautiful photos.

If you love Rodgers and Hammerstein, you probably will get great pleasure from this book.

One tiny quibble: Mordden is wrong when he says that Hammerstein invented the lyric form used in "I Am Going to Like It Here." Hammerstein used a Malayan poetic form called the pantoum.

This is one of my favorite scores from the Rodgers and Hammerstein canon. If you are a musical theater major or musical theater fan (and collect complete vocal scores), this is a great score to have in your collection and worthy of study.

The music is good and clearly printed, but I bought this edition for the spiral binding as advertised - and got none - which makes opening the score flat on the piano stand very tricky, and turning pages while playing from the score impossible. So "No Thanks".

"An artistic success, revealing a revitalized score and a dramatic complexion that's far richer than the original."-Variety

"One of the Year's 10 Best."-Los Angeles Times

One of Rodgers and Hammerstein's most compelling love stories is re-made enchantingly in a new adaptation by the renowned Asian-American playwright, David Henry Hwang. This new version was a runaway hit last year in Los Angeles and now is playing on Broadway. Set in San Francisco's Chinatown in the late fifties, this is a funny and moving story which explores what it means to be an American and touches the history of every person whose forebearers once arrived as a stranger to these shores. The book also includes an essay by cultural critic Karen Wada on the history of Flower Drum Song and its relationship to the Asian-American community.

David Henry Hwang was awarded the 1988 Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics and John Gassner Awards for his Broadway debut, M. Butterfly, which was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. His most recent play Golden Child received a Tony nomination and a 1997 OBIE Award.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Episodic, No Clear Ending, Not that Great.......2007-01-21

I am not Chinese American, and I have never seen the play, television show, or movie, so this review is about the book only. Other works based loosely off this book could be excellent, but I can only evaluate what I know.

The book itself deals with two major characters -- The Old Master, Chi-Yang Wang, and his son Ta Wang. The title refers to an old traditional folk song sung by a servant they hire in the third portion of the book, and may be a contrast between traditional and modern in the overtheme.

I loved the irascible character of Old Master Wang, how he was stern with fulfilled ambitions, having lived a good fruitful life. How he enjoyed his cough and calligraphy, and how he expected filial discipline while loving his family drew me into the lifestyle portrayed in the novel. His son Ta struck me as a person with a good upbringing who drifted through life, not really knowing or attempting to discover his talents. Ta is only interested in getting married, and his scenes reflect this fruitless quest in a society with the pressures of six men to one woman.

In redux, Chi-Yang = awesome patriarch, Ta = wimpy prince with no horse.

Other characters were present in the novel, but by far they had less dimension than the Wangs, who the narrator followed the lives of nearly exclusively. Only about a third of the novel focuses on Chi-Yang Wang, and the rest of it isn't filled out enough for my tastes. Perhaps if Ta wasn't always in a never-ending angst over women, I might have found more inside the book.

Almost four stars, except the actual ending leaves much unresolved in the house of Wang. This made me like the novel much less. Books with as many loose ends as the Flower Drum Song, I don't even consider complete. Perhaps one of the musicals or dramas has a better ending than the book, which basically cuts off right after a life-changing climax and leaves the reader wondering what happened.

4 out of 5 stars Before Amy Tan there was Ching Yang Lee.......2003-01-06

I read this book many years ago and enjoyed so much that I have read everything I could find by Mr. Lee, and since then other Chinese American authors.

It is a shame that for so many years the book was rejected by young Asian Americans as being "too white face" or "Uncle Tom" as it is not so at all. C.Y. Lee was a Chinese immigrant and wrote of the society as he saw it at that time, which is not the way the younger generation, who did not live through the immigrant experience, want to see it. This is not unusual, many well schooled, well fed sucessful Americans do not want to know that their grandparents arrived in steerage with their belongings tied up in kit bag, unable to speak the language, and worked 18 hours a day in menial jobs so that their children could get ahead.

This is a poignant story of Chinese immigrant families in Southern California during the days of the Chinese Exclusion Act, and the difficulty the young American-raised men had in finding a wife. They were not allowed to bring women in from China, and they were not permitted to marry non Asians. Because of the Communist takeover, many Chinese who had dreamed of returning home to China when they retired after working all their lives were unable to do so. The situtation created an artifically stressed society. The book has tragedy and sadness, as well as hope and joy.

My only criticism of the novel, and a mild one at that, is that it frequently reads like a play script, especially in the last chapter, where there is a lot of dialogue, followed by descriptions of the action which read like stage directions. It is possible that the novel was orignally intended to be a play.

Warning, possible spoiler:

The musical version of the book which was also filmed was very loosely based on the novel, in fact one of the major characters was created for the musical. Apparently this has been done again with the new version playing on Broadway. Readers expecting to find a printed version of the musical may be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Literature for the Ages.......2003-01-05

As a child, I saw the film "Flower Drum Song" and fell in love with the film. Though at the time, it was considered a no-no amongst the Chinese community. But none of those who scorn the film had even read either the book or seen the film. It was a beautiful made film that featured Asian actors who sing, dance, performed to a melodic score by one of the most creative song writing team. Therefore, I am so glad that this book is finally come to light and to be re-embraced into literary culture. Perhaps it will hopefully quail those critics who are as narrow-minded as those who thought we are just busboys and Charlie Chans. Be enlightened, and read this great piece of story-telling of a familial saga that we can all relate--regardless if we are Chinese or not. Enjoy, read and be enchanted. As well check out the film--it might change one's opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Stands the test of time.......2002-08-28

Originally published in 1957, this poignant and charming novel tells of a young man's struggle to fit in. Love, family and all the ups and downs that go with them are told with bittersweet humor. Its re-release is a wonderful companion to David Henry Hwang's new theatrical book which revives the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical on Broadway this year. Hurrah!

5 out of 5 stars A charming.......1999-11-03

My mother has always told me of a beautiful Rogers & Hammerstein musical called "Flower Drum Song". I bought the CD and found it simply splendid. However, my appreciation of the musical has only been enhanced by reading the novel it was based on by the author CY Lee. The story follows the intrigues of a Chinese emigrant family living in San Fransisco. It is romantic, in parts funny and a pleasure to read. I thoroughly recommend it.

I bought this book because I was auditioning for my very first musical (at a rather advanced age) and I wasn't sure of ALL the songs in history, which song would have the exact 20 bars of music I would need to ace my audition!

In enters "The Rodgers and Hammerstein Collection" with a vast array of possibilities.

With selections from some of the best known of their works such as "The Sound of Music", "South Pacific" and "Oklahoma", there are also selections from lesser known projects such as "State Fair" and "Pipe Dream."

As for me, I ended up singing 20 measures from "A Lovely Night" from "Cinderella"... and I got the part.
