Book Description
Based on the book Marie-Antoinette: The Journey by Antonia Fraser, Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette is a powerful and sympathetic film of the tragic life of France's iconic and misunderstood eighteenth-century Queen. Shot entirely in France, much on location at the Palace of Versailles, the film is visually stunning, bringing together a cast that includes Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, Rip Torn, and Marianne Faithful, and the extraordinary costume designs of Oscar-winner Milena Canonero (Barry Lyndon, A Clockwork Orange).
A moving story of naivety and responsibility, reputation and misunderstanding, Marie Antoinette is a film that Sofia Coppola has wanted to make for years. In a book that is at once the personal chronicle of a major work and a beautiful tribute to the potential of film, featuring elements of the director's own screenplay as well as captivating stills, the director's personal photos, and original designs for costumes and sets, Marie Antoinette is an essential companion for any lover of modern cinema.

Good, but now wonderful.......2007-06-07
The book was bought as a gift. My mom loved the movie, especially the beautiful dresses, and I bought the book hoping for a lot of pictures she would be able to look at and gush over... (And I knew I could have the pleasure of borrowing it after she would have finished!)
First of all, I was very disappointed that the cover, which looked like some kind of blue satin in the pictures, was not. It's only a regular paper cover (hard cover, but paper!). It's quality, but not what I was hoping for.
There are pictures indeed, but not as many as I was hoping for, and it's mostly on-set pictures, in the sense that it's like the images you would get by freezing the screen watching the movie. Of course there are some exclusive pictures, but I was hoping for more, and detailed pictures, to see what I wasn't able to watching the movie, something more special...
The script excerpts are cool, but of course, since it's handwritten, it can be hard to read.
My mom was very happy to receive that book for mother's day, especially since she loved the look of the movie. But she had to admit she was a little disappointed overall after going through it.
Having said that, I cannot say that I regret my purchase. Only that it's not exactly up to par to what I expected and that maybe I would've liked to pay a little less for a product in that category of quality.
Lovely book - but for fans only.......2007-04-03
I was desperate to get this book as I was a huge fan of the movie and, being a history buff, am also a great fan of Marie Antoinette. The book is certainly beautifully presented, with many gorgeous photos and the director's script, which makes for interesting reading as you are flipping through. However, I had really hoped to see some writings in the book about how the movie, sets, costumes, etc were designed, interviews with cast and crew, and how Sofia Coppola drew inspiration to create the movie. To be honest, I was disappointed to find it did not contain any of this - I personally thought these items could have been included without compromising on the taste and exclusivity of the book (ie. not turning it into a trashy cheap film-tie-in book, like the ones that get mass produced for some movies) but still it is a beautiful book and definitely worth having if you are a fan of either the film, Marie Antoinette, Kirsten Dunst or Sofia Coppola. Personally, I would still buy it.
A picture paints a thousand words.......2007-02-06
I bought this book on a whim and I am happy that I did. The photos are absolutely superb. Just gorgeous. Its a nice little companion for the film. I only wished that some photos were larger and that there was a larger selection. Most of the photos in it are just the promotional photos I have seen everywhere online. But still a wonderful book to display on a table.
Magnifique.......2007-01-11
I'm French so Marie-Antoinette is a part of my History! The book from the movie is simply incredible. Inside, you can see the script (in fact, not the total one but some good parts of if) and some beautiful pictures of the movie. I really love it :) So chic!
Almost perfect.......2007-01-09
The pictures were just what I wanted and I liked seeing the script. However, I wish there would have been more insights into the filming from Sofia Coppola.
Book Description
In six essays written especially for this volume, The Godfather trilogy is reexamined from a variety of perspectives. Providing original analyses on the form and significance of Coppola's achievement, they demonstrate how the filmmaker revised the conventions of the American crime film in the Vietnam era, his treatment of the capitalism of the criminal underworld and its inherent violence, the power struggles within Hollywood over the film, and the contribution of opera to the epic force and cinematic style of Coppola's vision of an American criminal dynasty.
Customer Reviews:
Just when you think you've read the dumbest review............2004-03-11
I find it striking that there are so many dumb people in the world. Like the person who wrote the review of this book and said "it's better than The Godfather...Mario Puzzo does an excellent job"! First, Editors Nick Browne & Horton Andrew wrote this book -- NOT MARIO PUZZO! Secondly, it analyzes the trilogy -- it's not an addition to the trilogy -- and thirdly, quit writing reviews about stuff you don't know. That's something I cannot understand, you write about something you know nothing about!
Amazing.......2001-01-20
I could not stop turning the pages! I read & re-read the book, and I am still completly compelled with the Godfather! Much better than the movies! This is simply one of the best novels that has ever been written. It can hold its own among some of the greatest writers in history. Truly the defining novel of its genre. Mario Puzo has written the perfect novel and I for one will never forget his work.

Book Description
It was a gallery . . . allegedly. In 1992, Ludlow Street in New York's Lower East Side was just gutter of low-rent tenements with a large demographic of artists, musicians, film-makers, designers, writers, and hoodlums. At the heart of it was Alleged Gallery--the most famous street-style gallery in America. A venue for art and artists always a few steps ahead of the object itself, this peripheral gallery launched--between 1992 and 2002--the international careers of countless emerging artists. From the outset, the gallery was always something of a hypothetical. The disclaimer was inherent in the name: Alleged. With the first sandwich board signs announcing its arrival, there was no mistaking the iconoclastic agenda. This was pure Carney, an exhibition space as conceived for the art world as it might exist in less savory social margins. Between the art, music, words and pictures, sex, drugs, and drinking, it became a democratic, all-inclusive venue for young emerging artists, representing an attitude about unlimited and irreverent freedom. In Young, Sleek, and Full of Hell, the history of the art, exhibitions, and events is told for the first time through spontaneous behind-the-scenes photographs and exclusive interviews with the artists, musicians, designers, models, actors, film-makers, curators, gallerists, and collectors who comprised this early art scene. Alleged Gallery defines an entire generation of art-making before it made the full transition from the streets to the galleries. Young, Sleek, and Full of Hell features over 100 artists who exhibited at the gallery, including: Mark Gonzales, Ed Templeton, Thomas Campbell, Diann Bauer, Jeremy Henderson, Glen E. Friedman, David Aaron, Daniel Higgs, Phil Frost, Spike Jonze, Andy Jenkins, Sofia Coppola, Andre Razo, Chris Johanson, Tobin Yelland, Ari Marcopolis, Barry McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, Mike Mills, Shepard Fairey, Tom Sachs, Susan Cianciolo, Sonic Youth, Courtney Love, Unsane, Surgery, Railroad Jerk, Cibo Matto, The Boredoms, Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Jim Jarmusch, Harmony Korine, Mark Borthwick, Cameron Jamie, and Terry Richardson.

young, sleek and awesome!.......2007-09-22
Love this book! Contains some great insights into the early careers of some of my favorite artists. There should be more books like this!
dull.......2006-12-02
I returned it.
If you are an artist looking for inspiration, you won't find it here.
The only fresh thing about this book is the title.
Photos are bland. It is more academic without the kick or good design in
"Live Through This."
The content would only be of historical interest.
I ordered this book because Amazon stated
" Customers who bought "Live through This" also bought this book.
I imagine they are getting a lot of returns.
allegedreview.......2005-08-26
This book gives you a look at what it was like from the people who were there. I only went to a few shows but these people lived there. McGee, Kilgallen, Campbell, Gonzalez and more. Photos of the shows and behind the scenes of life and work at the gallery. Plus great interviews with dozens of artists and people who were there telling how they found out about it and there wildest alleged experiences. Great book, every city in the world needs an alleged gallery, I know mine does.
Finally!.......2005-07-09
I have been waiting for this book for a long time. Although I wasn't a regular when the gallery was open, over the years I have become a big fan of the art and artists that were exhibiting there. This book is filled with interesting photos and anecdotes about the struggles of being an independent artist and gallery in an increasingly more corporate world. New York is not the same now. This book reminds me that one mustn't have to sell out to make a mark.

Book Description
Hollywood Auteur details the struggle between art and commerce in Hollywood filmmaking as exemplified by the career of Francis Coppola. Amid the dealmaking, creative compromise, and collaboration of modern American filmmaking, Coppola's career demonstrates how problematic the term "auteur" is in this milieu. Chown assesses the romanticism surrounding the cult of film directors in general and Coppola in particular. He argues that, ultimately, the idea that the actual "personal vision" of one director can be expressed in big-budget Hollywood films is highly suspect. Yet, the weight of this insightful volume suggests that Coppola may have an individualistic genius in the management of his career. Chown concludes that Coppola's status as a role model for a generation of young filmmakers and directors is well earned.
Book Description
"It may be the most lucid account of the strain of epic moviemaking that we'll ever get. At its center there's a great artist-hero caught in a trap - struggling to find the theme of the picture he's already shooting." -Pauline Kael
Customer Reviews:
i enjoyed the book...but i'm a big fan of the movie.......2001-01-07
to balance the reviews i have to add that i really enjoyed the book. i loved the film, the follow up documentry was as impressive (oscar winning i think), and this is a very interesting addition. i must add that one needs to be 'in' with the film making history already (i.e its no introduction to the most infamous 'touch-and-go' film productions) before one could appreciate this. its a well told tale.
A look at film from an interesting angle.......2000-03-24
I found the book to be very compelling and insightful. It takes a look at what went on behind the scenes of "Apocalypse Now" from the point of view of someone not involved in filmmaking in a direct way.
Don't waste your time with this book!.......1998-07-21
Perhaps a better title for this book would have been Meaningless Notes on the Making of Apocalypse Now. The author, who was charged with making a behind the scenes documentary of how the film was made, wastes the reader's time on disjointed anecdotes about her family life during the three plus years it took to complete this film. While the book jacket teases the reader with suggestions of her invaluable insights, the actual text is much more heavily devoted to Ms. Coppola's observations of her children, her husband's (in)fidelity, and what various dinner guests were served while visiting with the Coppola family. We learn much more about how four year old Sofia Coppola spent her days than how Martin Sheen's heart attack impacted the production. Why was Sheen hired to replace Harvey Keitel?...... What about those rumors of animosity between Marlon Brando and Dennis Hopper?...... Why did director Francis Ford Coppola choose to ignore weather experts and watch as the sets were des! troyed by a typhoon? Unfortunately you won't get any answers to those questions in this book. You will however learn in great detail how each of the Copppla clan spend their individual birthdays and how the Phillipines can't compare to California when it comes to health food shops and clothing boutiques. Duh!!! If you are truly interested in learning more about this historic film, I suggest you use your browser in a search of magazine and newspaper archives for appropriate material. Your time will be better spent surfing the net than waiting for Ms. Coppola to tell you why Robert Duvall's character was so hung up on having his Air Cav troopers surf "Charlie's Point."

Book Description
Academic writing on environmental communication proliferated in the 1990's. A few of us had been calling for such work and making initial investigations throughout the 1980's, but the momentum in the field built slowly. Spurred by coverage in the mass media, academic publishers finally caught the wave of interest. In this exciting new volume, the editors demonstrate more fully than ever before how environmental rhetoric and technical communication go hand in hand. The key link that they and their distinguished group of contributors have discovered is the ancient concern of communication scholars with public deliberation. Environmental issues present technical communicators with some of their greatest challenges, above all, how to make the highly specialized and inscrutably difficult technical information generated by environmental scientists and engineers usable in public decision making. The editors encourage us to "accept the challenge of contributing to environmentally conscious decision making by integrating technical knowledge and human values. For technical communicators who accept the challenge of working toward solutions by opening access to crucial information and by engaging in critical thinking on ecological issues, the research and theory offered in this volume provide a strong foundation for future practice.
Book Description
In the Blink of an Eye is celebrated film editor Walter Murch's vivid, multifaceted, thought -- provoking essay on film editing. Starting with what might be the most basic editing question -- Why do cuts work? -- Murch treats the reader to a wonderful ride through the aesthetics and practical concerns of cutting film. Along the way, he offers his unique insights on such subjects as continuity and discontinuity in editing, dreaming, and reality; criteria for a good cut; the blink of the eye as an emotional cue; digital editing; and much more. In this second edition, Murch reconsiders and completely revises his popular first edition's lengthy meditation on digital editing (which accounts for a third of the book's pages) in light of the technological changes that have taken place in the six years since its publication.
Customer Reviews:
Seasoned professional's wisdom of his craft: film editing.......2007-08-04
This book was a required reading for my national university on-line class in digital video editing. The book is a short read that can be accomplished in two sittings. I read the second part of the book on digital editing first, as I have been editing for the past 10 years and have made the leap from analog to digital, myself. Murch relates the changes from a professional's point of view. He compares analog versus digital editing He outlines how the workflow of the editor and, indeed, the whole industry, as filmmaking is such a collaborative art, is changing due to the inevitable transition to a totally digital medium. I read the first part of the book next. Smartly, this saved the best for last as his most profound advice for editing is contained in the middle of the text, at the end of part one. Here he explains a moment in editing when he understood the essence of his editing choices on a particular movie, thus revealing the title of the book. This is a gem of a read for anyone interested in the working mind of a seasoned editor. I recommend it to film fans, students, and anyone interested in getting into the industry professionally.
A Must Read.......2007-03-13
Whether you have a passing fancy with movie editing, or just want to understand the anatomy of one of our greatest media achievements, you will like this book.
It is brief, clear and drops you into the world of film in a blink of an eye.
It's a book about Story Telling and narrative design.......2007-02-23
Sometimes a book's own hype kills people's appreciation of it.
With Murch's classic, the problem is that it is considered a classic text about editing, simply because it is a biographical account of an editor at work.
It is not about the techniques or tools or modern equipment necessary to edit a film. If you seek a functional book to learn the fundamental skills of visual film editing, this is not something you should purchase.
It's very much more a story telling book. Most specifically if you are a writer, or, if you consider your film directing as 'writing with pictures,' this book will elevate your ability and understanding of 'writing with film.'
The old adage that 'film is a visual medium' is wrong.
Maybe that's why a get a little uppity about catchall phrases. Like "Film is a visual medium." It's not. Not really. It has music. It has dialogue. And, it exists over time.
One painting, is a visual medium.
Film, is 24-paintings per second with noise, weight, drama, visual, action, cognitive momentum, magic, and trust and hope. Film, as the casual and professional observer speaks of it, is more likely a cognitive medium. Film more closely approximates our external reality more than any other media, and it is Murch's perspective -- as the ultimate unifier of the other filmed elements -- that reminds us of that. He casually reveals what he knows about his art and how to design a dramatic narrative based on upon cognitive principles.
If you stumbled across this book just because you just dig making and writing films that much, than this book will excite you for the price of a Starbucks lunch. And it's better for your body than crumbcakes and coffee.
In the Blink of an Eye.......2007-02-16
It's a quick read, and somewhat entertaining. Not something I would recommend as a schoolbook for an editing class, but if you are interested in the editing process, it's a good read.
a editing classic.......2007-02-13
Every editor needs to read this, it will change the way you think about editing.

Book Description
The fourth and final volume in Bill Owens' landmark Suburbia series [SUBURBIA (1973; revised edition 1999, Fotofolio), OUR KIND OF PEOPLE (1975), WORKING - I DO IT FOR THE MONEY (1977), and LEISURE (2004)]. In his introduction to LEISURE, photographer Gregory Crewdson writes: "Owens' photographs belong to an American aesthetic tradition of art that explores the intersection of everyday life and theatricality. Like the paintings of Edward Hopper, the photographs of Walker Evans and Diane Arbus, and the short stories of John Cheever and Raymond Carver, Owens' photographs find unexpected beauty and mystery within the American vernacular. This collision between normality and strangeness transforms the American landscape into a place of wonder and anxiety."
Customer Reviews:
Wonderfully amusing collection of images.......2005-10-28
I saw a collection of Bill Owens images from this book at the ICP a while back. All of the images were wonderfully amusing tales of what folk do for leisure. After seeing the collection, I had to purchase the book and was pleasantly suprised by the book's production quality and the wide range of images. It's fun to see what people would do with their free time and money. I also like the captions as many of them are witty and are helpful in explaining the purpose of the image. For some reason, there isn't a caption on every page, but many of the pages do have a caption.
Free time folk.......2005-07-18
I bought Bill Owens 'Suburbia' in 1973 and over the years it has come to be one of my favorite photobooks (I also bought the 1999 reprint for the extra photos) the clarity of both the images and the thoughts behind them just seemed perfect. His 'Working (I Do It For The Money)' was my next buy and the vision continued and now with 'Lesiure' I have three of the four Suburbia series.
Unfortunately I feel that this book lacks some of the clarity of the other two I have. It seems to me that the neg files have been scoured for any photos that show leisure and then tipped into these pages. Most of the images work but that only shows up the ones that I feel are out of place (though still showing leisure) for instance, the couple by their pool on page twenty-seven, another couple, not communicating, on page seventy-six or the lady riding a bike on page ninety-one, they just seem out of place and look as if they might have been taken by another photographer. Several other photos seem badly cropped or peripheral to the books concept of leisure. Another annoyance, admittedly minor, is that so many of the photos have no captions even though they show something that makes me ask "What's going on here?"
Despite this the production of the book is first-class, good paper and printing (175 dpi) and the same size as the 'Suburbia' reprint. Perhaps the publishers will re-issue 'Our Kind of People' and 'Working' in this format to complete Bill Owens celebration of American life from the recent past.

Supportive Supervision offers that much-needed and fully integrated support system for the building-level supervisor. By providing a clear path and focus, the authors present a highly usable, hands-on guide that will help fill in the blanks created by districts and schools unable to distribute resources equally for the development and training of their supervisors.

- Collaborating with staff on establishing school wide goals focused on academic improvement
- Implementing effective lesson planning with supportive and meaningful classroom observations
- Recruiting and hiring the right teachers while meeting the professional development needs of all staff
- A three-part process and writing mode for the annual teacher evaluation
