Book Description
In 1977, Madonna Louise Ciccone moved from Michigan to New York City, re-christening herself simply ‘Madonna’. Six years of hard work in the clubs of Manhattan with a succession of bands propelled her to the forefront of the New York scene. In 1983, her self-titled debut album was released, and the hit singles ‘Holiday’ and ‘Borderline’ soon followed. Then came seventeen consecutive top ten hits, a further ten albums, and roles in nineteen feature films, from her debut in the 80’s classic Desperately Seeking Susan to the steamy thriller Body of Evidence. Multitalented, controversial in her own proud sexuality and a dedicated campaigner for sexual tolerance, Madonna is one of the great Millennial Icons, a one-woman pop phenomenon who has pushed back and blurred the boundaries of the music, film and fashion worlds.
‘Madonna in Art’ is a celebration of the Pop Goddess at every stage of her career. A testament to her unique global impact, it features work by over a hundred artists, including Andrew Logan, Bruni, Sebastian Kruger, Al Hirschfeld, Donna Lief and Peter Howson. These images range across every role Madonna has played on the world stage, from erotic dancer to the dignified figure of Eva Peron in Evita.

Madonna IS art!!.......2007-01-21
Fantastic hard-cover book with work by artists all over the world. Some of the stuff is really beautifully done - you've gotta have this!
More than just a "coffee table" book! Don't judge this book just by its cover! Devour it... bon appetite!.......2006-06-07
I am a librarian. Over the decades, I have had many art books pass through my hands. The compilation of fine artists by the author is glorious! The author's rigorous research in finding the artists whom he chose to be included within, certainly substantial.
In particular, the artist Susan Victor of murrrbeast.com, is
included in this book. It is about time that someone recognized her exceeding works. I would highly recommend this book -- especially to those in academia; the field of commercial art;
and anyone who simply loves art.
A Must for Madonna Fans - Fun for Art Lovers.......2004-10-30
I bought a book in 1984 called "Marilyn In Art". I always loved to every now and then flip through it because it was so much fun to see the different ways these artists drew or painted (etc) the same subject. I happen to be a longtime Marilyn fan.
From what I understand, the author (compiler) of this book, Mem Mehmet, is friends with the author of the twenty year old Marilyn book, Roger G. Taylor (who also did an "Elvis In Art"). I had the paperback version of the Marilyn book, but was lucky enough to get the hardcover version of "Madonna In Art". I am also a Madonna fan (not as much as a Marilyn fan, but...), this book is a MUST for any fan of Madonna! Fantastic, fun renditions of Madonna in every style imaginable, which also makes it great for any artist or art lover. Along with each piece of art is a quote from Madonna herself or a celebrity or author, etc. about some aspect of the superstar which is fun to read. Unlike my paperback "Marilyn In Art" book, the hardback version of this is of the highest quality. Beneath the attactive book cover, the name is embossed in silver metallic ink (which is used throughout the book). Would make a wonderful gift for Madonna fans, artists, art lovers!!! I'd scoop up the hardcover before it's only available in paperback!
Even a non-Madonna fan will enjoy this book.......2004-10-26
I've never been a fan of Madonna's music, but have admired her willingness to constantly re-invent herself. This new art book shows how others in the art world have viewed Madonna throughout her career. There are sketches, water colors, oils, and works from many other mediums with the artist's unique view on who (or in some cases, what) Madonna is.
If you love art, or love Madonna, this is the book for you. And it makes a perfect gift as well!

Customer Reviews:
Maybe I'd like this more if I were 12.......2007-09-26
The cover picture is really beautiful. The text is shoddy and second-rate, at best; sort of like Madonna's latest incarnation of herself!
Boring.......2007-06-28
Only the hardcore teens and college age bunch will find this interesting. She says in the book that papers and magazines aren't allowed in the house, but in a recent (2007) photo of the inside of one of her homes, we see a framed photo of herself cut from a tabloid!
Simplistic quotes and outright lies like the one above. Can anyone publish a book these days? At least it's a quick read.
madonna talk about everything.......2007-01-12
this book i great item that collect you all the great thing that madonna says about life sex music movie and about everything.
you can see how madonna smart and funny and how much power there is in this woman ....

This is a complete look into Madonna's style, from the beginning to the Drowned World Tour.
It makes for a beautiful coffee table book to be viewed by many.
Many were disappointed by Madonna's latest released book "Nobody Knows Me" - so if you didn't have your chance to get it, or did purchase it and found it to be disappointing, then Madonna Style is for you.
Includes tons of beautiful photographs & informational text.

Book Description
When Eve suffered a near-fatal brain aneurysm, Madonna Siles, her housemate and friend, too quickly found herself making critical short- and long-term medical care decisions without any help. When the insurance and financial resources ran out and the conventional therapy providers discharged zombie-like Eve to the homecare of a solitary caregiver, both their futures seemed hopeless.
Instead of giving up, Siles drew on life experience and her marketing career to develop a rehabilitation program that harnessed the power of the subconscious mind. Using motivational techniques borrowed from the advertising world, she appealed to Eve's subconscious to bypass the brain damage and restore normal functioning. In three short years, even the doctors were amazed at Eve's recovery and return to a near-normal life.
Part memoir, part recovery manual, Brain, Heal Thyself is a guidebook for thousands of shell-shocked individuals who suddenly find themselves having to make life and death decisions for those they love. With humor, warmth, and arresting honesty, Siles's lively narrative closely examines not only the patient's recovery, but also the crucial role of caregiversand the emotional, financial, and practical pressures they face.
Customer Reviews:
a must read if you want to help someone recover .......2007-07-13
I am a caregiver for someone recovering from a stroke - so I read the second part of the book first, where Madonna takes Eve home and begins her common sense and using-everything-she-ever-learned-in-life approach to helping her friend recover. Every occupational therapist in America should be required to read this book. It's a great book, an easy read, by a wonderful, creative, funny, honest human being. Madonna will cause you to start thinking creatively about how you can help your loved one in your daily interactions with them. A must read for anyone helping someone recover emotionally and/or cognitively, because relating to them as if they are still a competent human being is vital for rebuilding their confidence to keep trying, and by continued trying they recover.(that's a bit of knowledge that our medical community has failed to pick up on)
One of the most important self-help books on the market.......2006-08-06
Brain, Heal Thyself: A Caregiver's New Approach To Recovery From Stroke, Aneurysm, And Traumatic Brain Injuries is one of the most important self-help books on the market. The author's good friend experienced a near-fatal brain aneurysm and recovered: her title blends memoir and medical insights and will appeal to any caregiver who wants a blend of `how to' and biography.
A stunning story of caring and committment.......2006-06-25
I was and still am stunned by the courage, love and committment shown in this story. I am looking forward to meeting Madonna Siles - soon.
Couldn't Stop Reading! A Page Turner Through The End........2006-06-24
Anyone looking for inspiration dealing with a chronic illness or a brain injury...heck, anyone looking for just a darn good "read"... will find Siles' memoir of best friend Eve's aneurysm recovery fascinating and downright remarkable. Siles' direct, humorous, and brutally honest style draws the reader in from the first sentence. You'll find yourself nodding your head in agreement with her assessments of often contradictory medical thinking and cheering Eve on as she, under Siles' practical guidance, begins her remarkable recovery. If you doubt that belief in a higher power, a positive attitude, and dogged perserverance don't effect recovery, you're wrong. They're just as important as medical science and Siles and Eve prove it!
A caregiver survival tool.......2006-06-23
For anyone thrust without warning or experience into the role of caregiver for someone recovering from a brain injury or stroke, this book is a must-read. Ms. Siles easy style of writing brings you to tears with her down to earth honesty yet can also make you laugh as she describes the impishness of Eve as she begins her recovery. It gives hope to those who have been told their love one is destined to be a vegetable the rest of his/her life. Ms. Siles and Eve prove doctors don't always know best.

Book Description
As the Material Girl, Eva Peron in Evita, and most recently, queen of the disco floor, Madonna's transformations and assumed identities keep her fans wanting more. She has inspired university professors and cultural critics to enshrine her as a postmodern icon. Known for her persona as much as for her music, Madonna has stirred controversy through her use of religious and sexual depictions in her songs, music videos, concerts, and in one notorious publication. This biography traces Madonna's ambitious journey from a Midwest upbringing as part of a large family to achieving fame on a global scale. It also brings readers up to date on her latest incarnation as a wife and mother, living on a country estate in England. Students researching cultural studies topics will accurate information on the musician's life and body of work, as well as critical commentary on her impact and lasting significance as one of the most influential female entertainers of our time. She has been the subject of countless magazines and newspaper stories around the world, whether for her sold-out concerts or as an advocate for Kabbalah, the spiritual movement rooted in Jewish mysticism. This book shares her story and provides a way to consider the influence Madonna has had through her ever-evolving career in shaping our popular culture. A timeline of significant events and a bibliography of print and electronic sources for additional research round out this volume.
Customer Reviews:
A lively and interesting read!.......2007-06-25
I picked up this book on a whim and was captured after the first three pages. The writing is so lively that it kept my interest up even when the subject veered into areas that I might not otherwise care much about. And the author's dry understatements tell volumes. Ms. Cross seems to know just about everything about Madonna and she shows interest and respect for her without being silly on the one hand or critical on the other.
Unearthing the Real Madonna.......2007-06-21
While it's a formidable task to unearth the real Madonna, Mary Cross gets as close as any journalist or writer has to date to penetrating Madonna's multiple reincarnations. Cross offers up a full sketch of Madonna's life in all its complexities and outrage.
Cross suggests that Madonna's bad girl teen years, where she learned the power of shock, gave her the instincts for making it and the confidence to succeed--traits which have served her to good advantage throughout her long career. At age 20 she was cocky enough to take herself to Manhattan where she didn't know a soul. Even a series of failed artist ventures didn't dissuade Madeonna. She stayed the course, always with the ability to be on the cutting edge. She was among the first big names to use MTV to her advantage. Madonna was also in the forefront of milking publcity through the power of shock. She shoved her panties in David Letterman's face as a guest on his late night show, and later took delight in the outrage caused by her photographic book, "Sex." Her last concert took aim at political leaders and conveyed an erotic relatinship to horses.
Cross is in awe of Madonna's capacity to keep us guessing as she pushes 50. Madonna can still create some of the most imaginative and entertaing concerts around while positioning herself as a loving mother and wife.
Maybe the real feminist message here is never to lose faith in what you believe in and to be willing to try the new. "Truth or Dare" is the Madonna story and Cross tells it with juicy details, balance and even respect. This is a well-written (Cross is a seasoned journalist) guilty pleasure supreme. The perfect summer vacation read. I read it over a rainy weekend and, much to my surprise, found myself admiring Madonna in ways I hadn't counted on.

Book Description
Madonna: Inspirations captures the singular essence of this star and highlights her determination as an inspiration to all. Using only the star's own words, Madonna offers readers a glance into the hard work and dedication of this woman who is not afraid to bare it all-a natural inspiration to everyone who dares to be different. " "When I'm hungry, I eat. When I'm thirsty, I drink. When I feel like saying something, I say
it."
" "When my daughter was born, I was born again."
Madonna features over 50 photographs in a thoroughly modern design for a striking and unique look. The entire text of the book is composed of Madonna's own words.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing intellectual.......2007-06-28
If you think there may be profound philosophical sayings here, you'll be disappointed. Pics, sure, but if this is how she talks, she sounds like a fortune cookie.
Her teeny bopper fans will love it, but no one else will be impressed. Makes you wonder why it was written.
Lessons on Life.......2007-01-21
Tells you a little about Madonna's ideals and perspectives on life. Although a worthy collctible, it's probably more geared to her female fans...
Wanna-Be: Then and Now... For Serious Fans Only.......2006-07-14
Inspirations are a "for your eyes only" must have for the Madonna fan - legacy or current. She says it well and besides ... got to hand it to Madonna for her endurance in showbiz. In June in Montreal she asked the crowd "Who is more exciting? Me or the Grand Prix?"... YOU Madonna ... is, was, and always... with inspirations on the way. But heck - I've been a fan since Lucky Star (back when I was a tween) ... and Madonna's star shines just as bright as ever.
Let's Get Serious, Shall We?!.......2006-04-28
Just another proof positive example of the rich getting richer on the backs of the stupid struggling to get stupider.
Nuff said!
Short and Sweet.......2006-01-17
A fine example of less is more. Comprised of random thoughts, artful pictures, and an engaging layout; this book is a wonderful insight into Madonna, an extraordinary superstar who shares her ordinary thoughts w/her own personal touch. A must for all Madonna fans!
Customer Reviews:
Bad subject, great presentation.......2003-02-13
Madonna is the ultimate emperor in new clothes (all pomp, no circumstance), but these Rolling Stone Files collections are well organized, easy to follow, and fascinating in their ability to let us follow a career via some of the best writing in the business. Madonna is a fascinating anomaly because of her almost freakish ambition combined with an appalling lack of real talent. That makes this a very readable collection, even if I never listen to the music or see the godawful movies.
Awesome.......2000-04-07
Great if you love Madonna, as I do. Also, good if you are just interested in reading about her. She is fascinating....always has been, always will be. Madonna is a living legend! Also recommend, Encyclopedia Madonnica.....Madonna is absolutely fabulous!
The 3 best books about Madonna.......1999-06-14
1. This one (Rolling Stone Files) 2. Encyclopedia Madonnica (Matthew Rettenmund) 3. Madonna Unauthorized (Christopher Anderson)
With these 3 books you will learn more about Madonna then she even knows about herself.
Mandatory for any fanatic who wants to know more about this show-biz lady, other then what they see and hear on radio, TV, onstage, and onscreen.
Viva Ciccone!
Triumphant!!!.......1999-05-04
Rolling Stone and Madonna? Why not.Her being in the cover on all reincartions deserves a compilation.Essential to all Madonnaics, here we could trace her humble begginings, rise to fame, the endless critical scrutiny...it's all here and more.Missing though are the tongue in cheek covers, picture, and one liners.(Perhaps, one need to buy RS coffee table book Covers,to totally enjoy the moment).Concise, right on track and enjoyable!!!
madonnaology.......1999-02-16
Being a Madonnaologists in my own write, I enjoyed this history. I also found the Madonna stuff in POSTMODERNISM FOR BEGINNERS, intriguing.
Book Description
These thrilling and harrowing first-hand stories of fellow-survivors and their Spanish rescuers vividly reveal the unknown history of the Jews who found asylum from Hitler's Final Solution under Franco's Fascist regime.
Originally published in hard cover by Simon and Schuster and by Harper/San Francisco in paperback, it was acclaimed as one of The Progressive's "BEST READING OF 1993" and won an award from the Jewish Book Council in the category of Memoir and Biography. It is the first volume of Alexy's HIDDEN IDENTITIES TRILOGY, followed in 2003 by THE MARRANO LEGACY, and in 2005 by IN SEARCH OF FORGIVENESS, recounting her own search for her lost Jewish heritage.
Book Description
Madonna has long been accepted as a pop culture icon, but this text postulates a greater cultural importance by analyzing her as a postmodern myth.
This work examines how Madonna methodically discovered and constructed herself (often rewriting her past), the nature and extent of her ambition and the means she used to reach her goals. It also details the way in which she organized her own cult (borrowing from the gay community), devised her artistic output, and cunningly targeted different audiences. It also studies the fundamental contradictionvirgin or vamp? saint or prostitute?that fuels Madonna's career and describes how Madonna reflects today's society, its contradictions and its attitudes toward sexuality and religion.
Customer Reviews:
Madonna on par with Cleopatra.......2006-07-11
The Queen of the Nile will soon be battling for historical significance with the Queen of Pop very soon. A unique take on the influence of Madonna beyond just hit records to a whole social expression that inspired other artists, feminism, and what it means to be an ambitious woman without apology.
Makes Madonna Make "Postmodern" Interesting.......2003-01-17
Like so many, I find Madonna interesting. And I agree with the positive reviews of this book -- I really like it. The unique contribution here is the way the author discusses Madonna in ways that make "postmodern" an interesting, understandable, ans useful concept. And believe me, I am no fan of academic writing of or about the posrmodern. But this book can be highly and widely recommended.
Very Interesting Overview of Madonna.......2003-01-07
Madonna:alot can be said about Her but Boring isn't one of them.thsi Book Explores the Many things that relate too the Artist&personna that is Madonna.this Book is Challenging&also puts Madonna into a Complete Perspective from start too finish.just like the Woman Herself it will keep you wondering more&what lays around the Corner.
Final evidence of Madonna's superior intelligence.......2002-12-13
In this book GC Guilbert shows how absolutely everything Madonna has ever done is packed with clever references. He doesn't mean that she's a plagiarist, far from it: she just uses her vast knowledge of (popular) culture, in a "postmodern" way. A fascinating read.
A MADONNA BOOK FOR INTELLIGENT FANS.......2002-11-22
At last a book about Madonna that can be enjoyed by academics AND fans. There have been two or three collections of highbrow essays by various university eggheads that were a bit too hermetic. "Madonna as Postmodern Myth" is "intellectual" but crystal clear. The subtitle pretty much sums it up: Georges-Claude Guilbert does show the way the diva "rewrites" just about everything -- always cleverly -- and especially old Hollywood stars. Besides, it's a very feminist book, but a sexy feminist book (yes, it is possible). I'm sure every Cultural Studies professor is going to want to read it, as well as every Madonna fan who's ever wondered why it is exactly that makes her / him adore the "self-constructed" star, beyond the obvious: she's unique.
