Book Description
America has been saddened by the loss of Ronald Reagan, one of its greatest presidents, who provided a vision for his country and the leadership to achieve a lasting mark upon world history.
As the Official White House Photographer during five of Ronald Reagan's years as President, Pete Souza had unprecedented access for most of Ronald Reagan's two-term presidency. His photographs chronicling the daily life of our fortieth president provide a lasting tribute to the greatness of Ronald Reagan. With each photo Souza provides a brief first-hand narrative describing the unique background situation.
We are privileged to candidly view the president at work, privately, and leading others in the task of governing. Images of Greatness records these private and public moments of eminence, of the mundane, but mostly
the unforgettable.
Book Description
The age of multitasking needs better narrative history. It must be absolutely factual, immediately accessible, smart, and brilliantly fun. Enter Andrew Helfer, the award-winning graphic-novel editor behind Road to Perdition and The History of Violence, and welcome the launch of a unique line of graphic biographies.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, these graphic biographies qualify as tomes. But if you’re among the millions who haven’t time for another doorstop of a biography, these books are for you.
In Ronald Reagan, Helfer teams up with comic artist Steve Buccellato to show the stunning evolution of Reagan from a modest acting talent into what many Americans now view as the gold standard for American governance, a story made for the graphic medium.

Nice Graphic Biography on Reagan.......2007-09-14
What makes this book fascinating is that it is an illustrated biography, with a comic strip format, and covers the span of Reagan's political career.
The book is very clear and easy to follow. The details in the book are very educational.
This would be a great book to use for High School students studing Government or History.
that drug store truck drivin' man..........2007-09-08
Republicans often hold up Ronald Reagan as some sort of a conservative icon. They claim he broke up the Soviet Union and stopped the spread of communism. Every candidate from that party aspires to be the next Dutch Reagan.
This new graphic biography strips away that gloss and shows us the tarnished man beneath the image--Reagan almost started World War Three when the Soviets were ready to wave the white flag. Reagan made his rich buddies even richer. Reagan couldn't remember much of his second term.
Great artwork--excellent story! Check it out.
Book Description
Begins with the Inauguration of the nation's fortieth president in January 1981 and concludes with a photographic postscript, the opening of the Reagan Library in November 1991.

A Beautiful Tribute and Resource for learning about Reagan.......2005-05-07
The stature and legacy of the Presidency of Ronald Reagan continues to grow and strengthen. His critics went into apoplectic fits when he won the Presidency, they sputtered in consternation during his two terms, and continue to rage against him even after his death. Many books have been written about him and trees continue to be felled to publish new books about him. Some of the books are good, but many present a false image of Reagan the man and the President. The problem is that the rising generation has no direct memory of his time in office and is held captive by the information passed on to them in the various media.
This beautiful and well done book should be provided to every young person so they can get a proper notion of what was so special about Reagan and what he accomplished. Unfortunately, most of what they get in the popular media is the derision and contumely smeared on the name of Reagan. Even some who claim to support the Reagan legacy are co-opting the glow of the name without being factual about what they are supporting.
"Remembering Reagan" is full of great images that help us remember what a special time those two terms were. The text is honest about what happened and all the issues that filled his eight years serving our country as Commander-in-Chief. When you see the great pictures here you will wonder why the media relies on such weak pictures of Reagan. Well, we know why, but their biased agenda becomes that much more obvious after looking through this volume.
I would be happy to have my children learn about President Reagan from this book. It may not be the only book you want them to read or read yourself, but I contend that you won't have a complete picture of this man until you also go through this fine book. It is here you will get a sense of the energy, strength, presence, stature, dedication, quiet wisdom, and vast ability of one of our great Presidents.
Fabulous! Nostalgic!.......2000-10-03
I have been enough lucky and privilged to get the book in Simi Valley at Reagan Library Gift Shop! Then I have been asked by many friends of mine to get the book and they are all so thrilled and happy to have the book. If you failed to get some Reagan videos, then this book should enter your library and will give you some brief impression about those video titles. The life of President is fully illustrated and the book is just a beauty for your coffee table. Many friends of mine come and look through the pages and they become very thrilled when they turn over the last page. I am wondered that the book is available online as it was not before. So, do not waste time and get it NOW!!!

nice coffee-table book.......1999-10-04
Book with beautiful photos. Simple, short historic text. No deep thoughts and very brief quotes from the president, but makes the award-winning author of "Dutch" look like an idiot. This writer with basic research could figure out Reagan. He may have been complex, but so is every president. The book shares interesting info. as it quickly looks over his life. Bought it for a friend, but found it enjoyable reading and had to jump on Amazon to get my own copy. If you love books, shopping this site can be too much of a temptation. -RM

This loving, even worshipful, tribute to America's 40th president is a visually stunning work of art. Packed with over 500 photographs, many previously unreleased from Nancy Reagan's private collection, memorabilia, magazine covers on which he appeared, and even his belt buckle collection, this is a fitting celebration of a man who touched people around the world. There are brief remarks written by Mrs. Reagan and William F. Buckley Jr., as well as short essays on key points in Reagan's life, but the focus is on the images. And what images they are! Whether wading into a crowd wearing his trademark grin or giving a speech at the Berlin Wall, the man's charm and grace are clearly evident in these photographs. In looking them over, it appears that no one can stand near him without smiling.
"Not since Lincoln, or Winston Churchill in Britain, has there been a president who has so understood the power of words to uplift and inspire," Margaret Thatcher, prime minister of Great Britain at the time, said of Reagan. Appropriately, this book highlights dozens of quotes for which Reagan is fondly remembered, including the humorous and self-deprecating quips such as "I consider all proposals for government action with an open mind before voting 'no'" and "It's true hard work never killed anybody, but I figure why take the chance." In addition, over 200 quotes from a range of world leaders, cabinet members, journalists, family, and friends speak to the man's character and vision and bear testimony to why he was one of the most beloved American presidents of the 20th century. --Shawn Carkonen
Book Description
A photo essay on the life and times of America's 40th President. "He did not adjust his beliefs to conform to prevailing political winds.... Instead he spoke directly from his heart to the hearts and minds of the American people. And, in doing so, he initiated the greatest love affair between an American President and his constituents in recent history." -- Frederick J. Ryan, Jr., chairman of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation Even before he made the White House his home, Ronald Reagan spoke for the American people, capturing the hearts of small-town citizens and world leaders alike. His remarkable career in public life, spanning over fifty years, began in the Midwest, as a student leader and sports broadcaster, then in Hollywood as an actor and long-time director of the Screen Actors Guild, later as governor of California, and finally, as president of the United States. His legacy, too, is extraordinary: In the eight short years as president, Ronald Reagan presided over epochal international changes and ushered in unparalleled peace and prosperity--not only to his country but the world. Ronald Reagan: An American Hero is the story of Ronald Reagan's trials and triumphs, the story of his character and vision and values. It's the love story of a man for his wife, his country, and the world--the story of his unquenchable passion for liberty and life itself. Over 500 archival and full-color images, including many never-before-published photographs from Nancy Reagan's private collection and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, chronicle the milestones of America's fortieth president. Punctuating this visual history are close to 200 quotes from world leaders, actors, journalists, family, and friends who bear testimony to the greatness of the man who, for millions, has become an enduring American hero.

A hero for whom?.......2005-08-31
What does it say about the gestalt of America that this man could have remotely been considered a hero? Are we truly so blind, so lulled into bovine somnabulance that we can't separate myth from true heroism? Every GI in harm's way right now in the killing fields of Iraq has more heroism in his or her pinky than this first figurehead puppet of the Neocon death cult ever had.
Beautiful tribute to the greatest US president of the 20th Century.......2005-07-23
What can I say? This is the book that the Gipper deserved. The respect and affection for the man is obvious on every page. The pictures are gorgeous. Reagan was certainly the most handsome of American presidents. Everyone will have their own favorites. Mine are (pg. 216): Ron in his leather flight jacket giving an affectionate kiss on the cheek to Margaret Thatcher upon her arrival at Camp David; and (pg. 224): Ron and Nancy walking along a road at Camp David during a gentle snowfall . . . Nancy walking a little dog wearing a red sweater and Ron playfully chucking a snowball. Any fan of the Gipper would love this book.
Magnificent tribute in words and pictures.......2005-02-13
This magnificent tribute to Ronald Reagan is introduced by William Buckley Jnr and contains a foreword by Nancy Reagan. It recounts the story of this beloved leader's trials and triumphs in over 500 splendid black and white and full-color photographs of people, places, events and memorabilia.
The section An Emerging Voice deals with the years 1911 to 1932: From Dixon to the Gridiron. There are pics of Reagan as a baby, the Reagans' first home in Dixon and Reagan as a handsome youth and attractive young man.
An Aspiring Voice 1932 to 1954: Always The Performer covers the Hollywood years, his time as a broadcaster and as an actor. It includes a double page spread of movie posters from 1937 to 1964.
His years as governor of California are covered in A Voice For California 1954 to 1980: The Citizen-Politician and includes reproductions of fascinating political billboards, posters and buttons.
A Voice For America 1981 to 1984: Casting A New Vision deals with the presidential years and contains reproductions of amusing cartoons and magazine and newspaper covers. My favorite photograph here is the one of Reagan dancing with Princess Diana.
A Voice For The World 1985 to 1988: Triumph Over Evil contains many pics of world leaders, including a poignant one of Ronnie kissing Maggie. This section also contains covers of magazines like Time, Newsweek, Life, National Review and many others.
An Enduring Voice 1989 to present: A Legacy For Tomorrow deals with the twilight years and his legacy, including the presidential library. It also includes a reproduction of Reagan's handwritten note to the nation announcing his illness.
The impressive visual history chronicled in these photographs is elucidated by the captivating text and about 200 quotes from world leaders, actors, journalists, family and friends.
The book is a stunning work of devotional art that may be opened at any page to find inspiration from the life of this great leader who revived America and whose vision led to the liberation of millions of people.
I also recommend the 5-CD set Speaking My Mind: Selected Speeches With Personal Reflections, and the books When Character Was King by Peggy Noonan and Ronald Reagan: How An Ordinary Man Became An Extraordinary Leader by Dinesh D'Souza.
What an imagination!.......2003-03-02
What an imagination this lady has. This book is well written but not even close to reality. The Fuzzy glaze the writer puts on Ronnie is disgusting. Try Reagan's America by Lloyd Demause or Blinded by the Right the much more informative.
A Wonderful Tribute to a Wonderful President.......2002-11-18
This is a stunningly beautiful book for those of us who loved what Ronald Reagan did as President. I was a single mom receiving no child support. I'll never foget the hit that inflation was delivering. With the tax rebate, lower taxes and inflation sinking, thanks to President Reagan, he will forever be my hero. I love this man and all he stood for.
Book Description
An extraordinary life story in over 350 photographs, most never before published.Ronald Wilson Reagan lived the American Dream-over and over again. During his long, astonishing life, he succeeded at everything he attempted. College football letterman. Heroic lifeguard. Sports announcer. Movie star. Television host. Corporate spokesman. Governor. And finally, the greatest dream of all: President of the United States.Fully two-thirds of the images in this book have never been published before, and they offer us glimpses into the private man as well as the public icon. We see him as a little boy in his mother's Sunday School class, welcoming home GIs with Bette Davis; helping his daughter prepare for a ballet recital; and celebrating the birth of his namesake with second wife Nancy. In a wonderful assortment of unseen images from his presidential library, we see every aspect of the president, from building a snowman with his grandson on the White House lawn to anguishing over the deaths of Marines in Beirut. No matter what one's politics, these images, and James Spada's evocative, balanced text, provide new insights into-and fresh awe at-a man whose life embodies the promise of America.AUTHORBIO: JAMES SPADA is a writer and photographer who has written internationally bestselling biographies of Barbra Streisand, Bette Davis, Peter Lawford, and Princess Grace of Monaco. He has also compiled pictorial biographies of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Marilyn Monroe, Katharine Hepburn, Robert Redford, and Jane Fonda, among others. He lives in Natick, Massachusetts.

THE BEST REAGAN PHOTO BOOK BY FAR.......2004-06-08
James Spada has done extraordinary photo research for this book, uncovering many photographs among the nearly 300 in the book that will be new to even the most die-hard Reagan followers. The text is elegantly written, lively, and informative. If you want to have one photo album to remember Ronald Reagan by, this one hsould be it!
Heavy on the Style, Skimpy on the Substance.......2001-04-12
This book is the perfect illustration of Ronald Reagan. Give the people lots of pretty pictures to look at and keep them distracted from the deficiency of intelligent thought. Heavy on style yet skimpy on substance. If you want to celebrate the shallowness that was Ronald Reagan, then this is a good book for you.
Like Family Album!.......2001-02-16
I got this book on my birthday, which is on February 7, one day later that of Ronald Reagan himself. I am amazed how James Spada got all those pictures in this one volume book. I am amazed at his comments. You got the feeling that he was next to him. President's assassination attempt and his Golden State retirements pictures are also here. BUT BE ADVISED: Unlike other books, this are BLACK AND WHITE pictures. If you are looking for the color pictures, go and buy 'REMEMBERING REAGAN' and 'UNGUARDED MOMENTS.'You will be able to compensate the color phenomenon. I would like to see another book like this one but only in color pictures. All in all, the book is great and the author should be recognized for his efforts. I hope he will start another project and we shall see the color one. You won't be upset as you will see wonderful pictures of President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan.
Absolutely Delightful!.......2001-02-11
What a refreshing look at our country's most admired President. After enduring the past 8 years of efforts by the former administration to demoralize family values, I am rejuvenated to see the wonderful photos and read the narratives. There is once again optimism that the Bush family will be the ones who will bring honor and pride to our White House and First Family. The book is a perfect collection of photos showing the geniuine love and respect for families and marriage, as exists with the Reagans. We have been fortunate enough to see Pres. Reagan during campaigns and in Washington, and want our grandchildren to learn more about this wonderful man. I purchased a copy for our grandson, and after receiving it-looked through it, and quickly ordered another copy for our own home.
Outstanding!!.......2001-02-05
James Spada is brilliant! I have always admired Ronald Reagan, the greatest president of our times! This book offers fantastic pictures, most of which I had never seen before, with many pictures coming fairly recently (within the last few years). I only hope that President Bush will live up to the great conservative standards of former-President Reagan. May God bless Ronald Reagan in the final years of his unbelievably effective life!!

Good Despite All Efforts to the Contrary.......2004-06-08
OK - I'll admit that I bought something from the Time/Life telemarketers. I have since been punished by receiving their relentless phone calls.
My copy of "A Life in Pictures" arrived along with three PBS DVD's, and it was a while before I got around to flipping through its pages.
It wasn't until this week that I got around to reading it. The last picture in the book was quite moving now that Reagan has exited the stage at last.
The photos are all worthwhile - though many of them can be found elsewhere. The young Reagan transitioning to the old Reagan presents a remarkable image.
Still, it must be pointed out that anyone selecting Dan Rather to write an introduction to a book about Reagan must have their motive questioned, at the very least. Having Rather opinine about Reagan is like having Rush Limbaugh write the introduction to a book about Bill Clinton.
Rather tries his hardest to say decent things about Reagan while condemning everything he stood for, and is marginally successful. So are the editors, whose captions to the photos only occassionaly break forth in utter disdain. Again - recognizing Reagan's iconographic standing, they are hesitant to resort to outright calumny. Still, they don't miss a chance to characterize his followers as "rabid," emphasize his emotional distance as a father, or give more than equal time to his detractors.
Finally, there's some typical Time/Life nonsense in the book, such as the "Other Presidents Who Survived Assassination Attempts" and "Other Prominent First Ladies" sections.
Still, one can always ignore the captions and text, and come away with a nice collection of images of the Gipper.
Ronald Reagan: A Life in Pictures.......2001-01-28
What a beautiful book documenting the life of arguably one of the most famous and successful Presidents in our nations history. President Reagan saved our country from socialist and communist forces from within and abroad and helped America become the leader of the free world, a position it still enjoys today, 20 years after his first inauguration. Here's to a Ronald Reagan, a TRUE American hero!
Book Description
As the Reagans' favorite photographer, Harry Benson has long enjoyed a special relationship with the former first family, photographing them numerous times for Life and Vanity Fair magazines. His photographs of the couple, taken at the White House and at the Reagans' homes and ranches, are intimate and appealing records of a happy and fulfilling marriage.
Recently, Nancy Reagan invited Benson to photograph the couple together one last time, a bittersweet occasion given the former president's Alzheimer's Disease. That portrait and others spanning nearly 40 years are gathered together in this charming book, which also contains an introduction by Patti Davis about her parents, as well as Benson's own memories of his encounters with the Reagans.
